India‘s Malayalam-language cinema superstar Mohanlal has been named the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honor. The country’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed the selection, with the award to be presented at the 71st National Film Awards in New Delhi on Sept. 23.

The award – instituted in 1969 in memory of Indian cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, director of “Raja Harischandra” (1913), India’s first full-length feature, who is considered the father of Indian cinema – is given for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.

Mohanlal, whose career spans nearly five decades, has acted in more than 360 films across the Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. Known for acclaimed performances in titles such as “Kireedam,” “Bharatham,” “Vanaprastham” and the hit franchise “Drishyam,” he has already earned five Indian National Film Awards and multiple Kerala State Film Awards. He was previously honored with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019, two of India’s highest civilian awards.

From the adipoli, beautiful land of Kerala to audiences worldwide, his work has celebrated our culture and magnified our aspirations. His legacy will keep inspiring Bharat’s creative spirit.”

Mohanlal said the recognition was a “major honor for me and for Malayalam cinema,” crediting the audiences and colleagues who have supported his career.

Another shared, “#JollyLLB3 is a POWERFUL FILM with solid WRITING, meaningful DIALOGUES, ENTERTAINING SCREENPLAY, and EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES

The core PLOT is about FARMERS and how they are exploited at the hands of billionaires @raogajraj is too good in negative shades as he’ll make you hate him.”

“#JollyLLB3 wins for me at the moment when #AkshayKumar urges the court to include Agriculture as an important chapter in textbooks, so that students know who a farmer is and not think, “Khaana Swiggy, Zomato pe banta hai!” What a thought,” wrote one.

One shared, “The core PLOT is about FARMERS and how they are exploited at the hands of billionaires! @raogajraj is too good in negative shades as he’ll make you hate him, and that’s where he excels. Plus, the SCREENPLAY is so well-written that there’s hardly a dull moment.”

About Jolly LLB 3

In Jolly LLB 3, Akshay reprised his role as Jolly. The film also stars Arshad Warsi in the lead role. The plot is based on the 2011 land acquisition protests in Uttar Pradesh. The film was released in theatres on September 19 and is the third instalment in the Jolly LLB series. Jolly LLB 3 sees Jagdwishwar ‘Jolly’ Mishra defend a powerful political figure against a land-grabbing case filed by local villagers. Jagdish ‘Jolly’ Tyagi, his rival, represents the complainants. The film also brings back Saurabh Shukla, Huma Qureshi, and Amrita Rao, while adding Gajraj Rao and Seema Biswas to the cast.

As per review by Hindustan Times, “Overall, Jolly LLB 3 may not outshine the first two films, but it keeps the courtroom drama spirit alive with enough laughs and solid performances to make it a worthy addition to the series.”

Abhishek Bachchan Cast in Prabhas’ Film Fauji?

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

The shooting of Prabhas’ upcoming film Fauji (working title) has come to a grinding halt, recently! Partly because of Prabhas’ injury, and also due to the superstar prioritizing his forthcoming release The Raja Saab. However, the filmmakers have completed 25 per cent of the shooting. And in the meantime, rumours are rife that Abhishek Bachchan is in talks for a significant role in the war drama. While the reports doing the rounds may be outrageous it’s certainly catching the fans by surprise.

Reports of Abhishek Bachchan set to share screen with Prabhas in the upcoming Telugu film Fauji has certainly excited the fans

Reports of Jr Bachchan is set to share screen with Prabhas in his upcoming Telugu film Fauji (working title) has certainly excited the fans. A little birdie tells us that director Hanu Raghavapudi has considered approaching Abhishek Bachchan for a pivotal role in his upcoming film. Buzz is that the filmmaker had already initiated talks to rope in the Dhoom actor for the part. Apparently, director Hanu offered a special role to Abhishek Bachchan. While Prabhas shares a great bond with Amitabh Bachchan, chances are likely that Jr Bachchan may give his nod for the part. Sources close to the production house state that Abhishek seems to be positive about the opportunity.

“Efforts are on to rope in Abhishek Bachchan for a crucial cameo, but the production house hasn’t got anything positive yet from the actor. The filmmakers are hoping that Jr Bachchan’s inclusion will add a new dimension to the cast apart from boosting the film’s visibility in Hindi,” says a trade source. Will he, won’t he? Time will tell. Imanvi is playing the female lead opposite Prabhas in the film. On the other hand, Abhishek’s father Amitabh already featured in a couple of Telugu films — Syera Narasimha Reddy, starring Megastar Chiranjeevi, and in Prabhas-starrer Kalki 2898 AD Part 1. Perhaps, it’s Jr Bachchan’s turn now, if all goes well.

Brooklyn Zombie Apocalypse Horror Film ‘Queens of the Dead’ Trailer

“It’s life or death!” “It’s both. It’s always both.” Brooklyn zombie mash! IFC Films has debuted the official trailer for a horror comedy movie called Queens of the Dead, a queer zombie comedy made by filmmaker Tina Romero (daughter of the legendary zombie master George A. Romero – who passed away in 2017). Drag queens and club kids battle zombies craving brains during a zombie outbreak at their drag show inside a warehouse in Brooklyn, putting personal conflicts aside to utilize their distinct abilities against the undead threat. The film premiered the 2025 Tribeca Festival – where it won an Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature – and later screened at the Fantasia Film Festival up in Montreal a few months ago. Queens of the Dead is now set to open in theaters starting in October (of course!) before it’s streaming on Shudder. The fun ensemble cast includes Katy O’Brian, Jaquel Spivey, Tomas Matos, Nina West, Quincy Dunn-Baker, Jack Haven, Cheyenne Jackson, Dominique Jackson, Margaret Cho, Riki Lindhome, & others. This looks like some wacky, weird, wild and kinky horror fun even if it’s another familiar zombie riff.

Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Tina Romero’s film Queens of the Dead, direct from YouTube:

Queens of the Dead Poster

It’s Easter in Bushwick, and a different kind of resurrection is at hand… In Queens of the Dead, a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, & frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead. They’re all forced to resolve their differences and find a way to band together and survive. Queens of the Dead is directed by up-and-coming genre filmmaker Tina Romero, making her feature directorial debut after a few short films previously. The screenplay is written by Tina Romero and Erin Judge. Produced by Natalie Metzger & Matthew Lee Miller. This initially premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, and also played at the Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year. IFC Films debuts Romero’s Queens of the Dead horror in select US theaters starting October 24th, 2025 this fall. Who’s in?

Hawaii Film Fest To Open With ‘Rental Family’; Screen ‘No Other Choice’

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: This year’s Hawai’i International Film Festival (HIFF) will open with Rental Family, starring Brendan Fraser, and has set Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice as its Centrepiece Film.

Fraser stars as a down-and-out American actor adrift in Tokyo in Rental Family, which was filmed in Japan. The film is directed by Japan-born, US-based filmmaker and former actress Hikari, who has also directed episodes of Tokyo Vice and Netflix series Beef. No Other Choice, fresh from critical acclaim at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, has also just screened as the opening film of Busan International Film Festival.

Park is also being honoured with the Vision In Film Award at HIFF, which will also present a Career Achievement Award to New Zealand actress Melanie Lynksey (Pike River) and Maverick Award to Japanese director and action choreographer Kenji Tanigaki (The Furious). Japanese comedian Yuriyan Retriever will receive the festival’s New Vanguard Award.

In addition, the creative team behind Apple TV+ series Chief Of War – inspired by Native Hawaiian history and co-created by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett – will be presented with a Trailblazer Award. The team also includes producer Brian Keaulana and many members of the Kānaka Maoli and Pacific Islander community.

HIFF is also launching its first ever industry conference in Honolulu, which will bring together Hawai’i’s creative community with visiting filmmakers and film agencies from across the Asia Pacific Rim.

Keynote speakers set to attend HIFILM Industry Conference (October 24–26) include former Amazon Original Movies head of physical production Glenn Gainor, who has launched new outfit Hollywood Ventures; and Oscar-winning documentary director Ben Proudfoot (The Queen Of Basketball), who recently directed The Eyes Of Ghana, produced by the Obamas. The conference will also present a deep dive into the writing and production of Chief Of War.

“This new platform brings together a cross-section of professionals from across the industry – Sundance alums, Academy Award winners, Hollywood execs, international co-production experts, and cultural workers to examine how production impacts real communities, both above and below the line,” said HIFF Artistic Director Anderson Le.

“At a time of massive paradigm shifts, especially in Hawai’i, it’s vital we explore these real-world effects and anticipate the trends shaping the future of storytelling as it pertains to authenticity and the global marketplace.”

In total, HIFF will screen 72 features and 143 short films from 44 countries. The festival has expanded its shorts programming as it’s the only festival in the State of Hawaii to be an Academy Award qualifier for short films. Two awards will be handed out in the shorts categories – Best Short Film and the Best Made in Hawaii Award, dedicated to short films from Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

HIFF will also present the HIFF Kau Ka Hōkū (Shooting Star) Award to the best emerging filmmaker at the festival and the Pasifika Award for Best Feature Film, which focuses on films with a Pacific Islander perspective. The nominees for both awards are listed below.

Other highlights include titles from Sundance, Cannes, Toronto and Busan film festivals along with major films from the Asia Pacific Rim that will screen at HIFF before their domestic releases. Best of fest titles include Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident, Lav Diaz’ Magellan, Oliver Laxe’s Sirat, Mascha Schlininski’s The Sound Of Falling and Kleber Mendonca’s The Secret Agent.

“HIFF45 continues our legacy of showcasing the most exciting and groundbreaking voices in global cinema, while also creating a vital hub for industry exchange through our inaugural HIFILM Industry Conference,” said HIFF Executive Director Beckie Stocchetti.
