‘Steal This Story, Please’ Review: Amy Goodman Documentary

by jummy84 April 9, 2026
written by jummy84

“Democracy Now!” is not a program you seek out when you’re on the fence about the issues. The daily nonprofit radio show, now entering its four decade on both the real and digital airwaves, is as unapologetically progressive as they come. Host and producer Amy Goodman and her team of reporters clearly subscribe to a worldview that the world is divided into a battle between oppressors and those they oppress, and their aggressive lines of questioning are catnip for an audience that believes the mainstream media is too centrist. It’s less a place for arguments and debates than a team headquarters that tirelessly tries to advance a cause.

Fatih Akin, Diane Kruger at the “Amrum” Photocall during The 78th Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 16, 2025 in Cannes, France.

It’s unsurprising, then, that the new documentary about Goodman plays like more of a greatest hits compilation than a serious attempt at capturing the essence of a person. Carl Deal and Tia Lessin’s “Steal This Story, Please!” recaps Goodman’s entire career, from her famous interview with then-President Bill Clinton in which she criticized him for passing NAFTA and “shifting the Democratic Party to the right” to her subsequent protests of the Bush and Trump administrations and her unwavering support of Palestine since October 7th.

Much like “Democracy Now!,” which does not accept advertisers and survives on donations from foundations and individual viewers, “Steal This Story, Please!” is a grassroots effort. The filmmakers are self-distributing the film this spring following a festival run that began at Telluride, and the audience will be overwhelmingly comprised of Goodman’s politically engaged fans. The film’s content suggests that Deal and Lessin are primarily focused on rallying the true believers to get even more involved, not converting anyone to Goodman’s worldview.

Given those parameters, it’s hard to imagine the film not succeeding at its goals. “Steal This Story, Please!” is a profile in courage, presenting Goodman as an unrelenting voice of the voiceless who is never afraid to get arrested or make an enemy in her pursuit of telling her truth. Her career is filled with the kinds of on-the-ground adventures that should inspire plenty of wide-eyed journalism students who haven’t yet realized how much of the job is just staring at laptop screens. Anyone looking for permission to protest, organize, and get their hands dirty for the things they believe in will likely leave the screenings feeling invigorated.

But the components that make “Steal This Story, Please!” a useful activism tool also turn it into an underwhelming piece of art. The film is only interested in portraying Goodman as an unambiguous hero, robbing us of the chance to explore the nuances of a complicated person who has participated in decades of history. There’s not much room to explore how Goodman has evolved, if she ever got something wrong, or express any critical thought about how her bomb-throwing approach fits into the media ecosystem.

There’s no denying that we’re living through dark times, and saying that a journalist subscribes to a simple Good vs. Evil worldview is less damning of an accusation than it would have been 15 years ago. But given how ideologically motivated Goodman is, her story could have been better told by a filmmaker with less interest in adding their thumb to the scale. A less fawning portrait of Goodman could have still reached the same progressive conclusions while giving us a better understanding of what makes her tick and why she continues to survive in a media landscape that never stops evolving. Instead, we’re left to try and fill in those gaps ourselves.

But “Steal This Story, Please!” is the kind of film that has no problem sacrificing artistic merit if it means inspiring a few more people to get out and protest. It’s not a coincidence that Deal and Lessin are rolling it out in the months leading up to a crucial set of midterm elections in America, and the only fair way to grade such a mission-based film is to see how much it helps accomplish its goals. On that front, we’ll all have to nervously wait a few months before we can deliver a proper verdict.

Grade: C+

“Steal This Story, Please” opens at IFC Center in New York on Friday, April 10 and in Los Angeles on April 17, with a national expansion to follow.

Hulu Passes on La LA Anthony, Kim Kardashian Pilot ‘Group Chat’

by jummy84 April 3, 2026
written by jummy84

Hulu has opted not to pick up the comedy pilot “Group Chat,” Variety has learned. The show was inspired by La La Anthony’s book “The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness” and hailed from writer Kenya Barris and executive producer Kim Kardashian.

The project was first announced as being in development back in 2024 under Kardashian’s first-look deal with 20th Television. Anthony starred in the pilot in addition to executive producing, while Kardashian was set to guest star and serve as narrator on the series. The cast also included Yaya DaCosta, Melanie Liburd, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Stephanie Suganami.

But Anthony and Kardashian are staying in business together. Both are attached as executive producers on an untitled Tracy Oliver comedy series currently in development at Hulu. Oliver is also an executive producer on the project in addition to writing. 20th Television is the studio.

The logline for the new project states, “When the Bay Area’s most sought-after crisis manager for professional athletes finds her own life upended by her husband’s scandal, she turns to the three women who’ve been by her side through every version of her life. Together they navigate dating, ambition, motherhood, and the glamorous mess of starting over.”

Oliver is perhaps best known for writing the hit 2017 comedy feature “Girls Trip,” which grossed over $140 million worldwide. She went on to write films like “The Blackening,” “The Sun Is Also a Star,” and “Little.” On the TV side, she is known for developing “The First Wives Club” TV series at BET+ and for creating the Amazon Prime Video series “Harlem,” which ran for three seasons.

OIiver is repped by CAA, Artists First, and Myman Greenspan. Kardashian is repped by WME. Anthony is repped by Linden Entertainment, WME, and Sloane Offer.

Hannah Einbinder Slams AI Creators As “Losers”

by jummy84 April 3, 2026
written by jummy84

With the fifth and final season of Hacks taking on Hollywood once again, Hannah Einbinder has some thoughts about the role artificial intelligence plays in the industry.

The 4x Golden Globe nominee recently slammed generative AI creators as “losers” who are “trying to rob real creatives” as she tore into the tech trend that continues to divide Hollywood during a press conference for the HBO Max show.

“The people who make this stuff are losers,” she declared, according to SlashFilm. “They’re not artists. They’re not creative. And they’ve wanted their whole lives to be special. And they’re not special.”

Einbinder added, “They’re trying to rob real creative people of our gifts. And you can’t. And even if you try, you will never be cool. You guys suck. No one likes you. Anyone who’s near you is because they crave power and access over any ethical standard. You are a loser. You will never be cool. And you probably had a rolly backpack in high school. I wanna put your head in the toilet and flush.”

Jen Statsky, who co-created the series with Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello, agreed that in attempting to make the creative process “easier” with AI, creatives will suffer while execs continue to profit.

Jean Smart as Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder as Ava Daniels in ‘Hacks’ Season 5.

WBD/ HBO Max

“I wish that I believed that it was in better hands, but I don’t,” said Statsky. “And until there’s guardrails put on, until there is some stoppage mechanism to make sure that we are protecting the humanity both in art and people’s livelihoods, it ain’t good.”

Season 5 of Hacks premieres April 9 on HBO Max, reuniting Einbinder’s Ava Daniels with comedy icon Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), who plans to sell out Madison Square Garden with her first stand-up show after being legally barred from performing over breaking her late-night contract.

Streaming Ratings March 2-8, 2026

by jummy84 April 2, 2026
written by jummy84

The first week of March was a big one for streaming shows set in 19th century England.

Prime Video’s Young Sherlock got off to a solid start in its premiere week, recording 678 million minutes of watch time in Nielsen’s streaming ratings for March 2-8. The series, which follows Sherlock Holmes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) as a college student and budding detective, was the top series debut of the week.

Bridgerton, meanwhile, spent a second week as the overall No. 1 title, coming in at 1.99 billion minutes of viewing. It was one of three series to score more than a billion viewing minutes, along with The Night Agent (1.12 billion) and The Pitt (1.11 billion), neither of which are set in 1800s England.

Two other shows also made their first appearances in the original series top 10: Netflix’s Steven Spielberg-produced nature series The Dinosaurs drew 612 million minutes of viewing, and Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters had 467 million a week into its second season.

Hulu’s Paradise accumulated 694 million minutes of watch time for the week — down from a series high of 950 million minutes the previous week but still well above all but the finale week of its first season last year.

Netflix’s action film War Machine, starring Alan Ritchson, also had a big opening week, leading the movie chart with 1.1 billion viewing minutes. All four Jurassic World movies also made the rankings, led by 2025’s Rebirth with 741 million minutes.

Nielsen’s streaming ratings cover viewing on TV sets only and don’t include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. The ratings only measure U.S. audiences. The top streaming titles for March 2-8, 2026, are below.

Is Sherlock Holmes Real? ‘Watson’ Boss Explains Mystery and Mary’s New Love Interest

by jummy84 December 16, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • In the Watson Season 2 midseason finale, Watson makes a major move when it comes to his love life, and his concern for his friend Sherlock grows.
  • Showrunner Craig Sweeny breaks down what’s really going on with Sherlock and teases what’s ahead when the series returns in March.

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Watson Season 2 Episode 10 “Never Been CRISPR’d.”]

What’s the bigger development in the Watson fall finale, which aired on Monday, December 15: The titular doctor’s (Morris Chestnut) discovery about Mary (Rochelle Aytes) and why he learns it, or the continued mystery surrounding Sherlock Holmes (Robert Carlyle)?

After seeing how far his patient Hobie (Nat Faxon) is willing to go for love and off his advice, Watson goes to tell the woman he loves how feels, and it’s not his girlfriend but instead his ex-wife Mary, However, instead, Watson walks in on her kissing her new beau (played by Aytes’ real-life husband, C.J. Lindsey). Meanwhile, Sherlock returns and shows some concerning symptoms that Ingrid (Eve Harlow), when Watson tells her of his friend, suggests could be a brain tumor. Watson seemingly gets him to agree to see a doctor, puts him an exam room … and returns to find him gone.

Below, showrunner Craig Sweeny breaks down the midseason finale, that ending with Watson and Mary, what’s going on with Sherlock (is he real?), and what’s to come when the series returns — in March and on a new night.

I had a feeling that Watson was going after Mary. But now she has a new significant other. What does that moment do to Watson, that he was ready to make that move and now he kind of has to grapple with the reality of that and what that means?

Craig Sweeny: I think it’s staggering to him, especially when you realize that — not that there would be anything wrong with being in love with the janitor, but he has walked in on a very viable candidate for Mary’s love there. It’s not just anybody. And so he’s forced to reckon with the consequences of dallying and waiting and that Mary has, in spite of their obvious chemistry, moved on in a pretty significant way.

Colin Bentley/CBS

How aware was Watson of his feelings for Mary before that point?

My opinion, he was pushing those feelings down pretty hard and that it was only the — obviously he respects Hobie. They have a sweet relationship, and I believe he was learning something about himself during that walk and before leaving that room, he would’ve guessed that he would’ve walked to Laila rather than Mary.

What can you say about this new relationship of Mary’s — for her? Forget about the Watson of it for a moment.

It’s somebody that you’d be happy to be partnered with. The actor is Rochelle’s real-life husband, which is fun. C.J., we know him just by virtue of getting to know each other on set, but he has a job that Watson, it is one of the few jobs in the world that he respects and is a little bit intimidated by. I wouldn’t even put it, adversary is not quite the right word because they’re grownups and certainly Mary’s partner hasn’t done anything wrong. However, Watson who faced down Moriarty and is Sherlock Holmes’ equal, is actually slightly in some ways intimidated by this guy.

So is this the beginning of the end for Watson and Laila, or is it kind of a matter of like, well, if I can’t be with Mary, I don’t want to lose everything?

Well, yes, he’s going to have to — The question Watson will face is, am I going to reckon honestly with the consequences of my choice right away, or am I going to try to walk a certain line or can I… I mean, even a character as noble as Watson can lie to himself and say, you know what, let’s just — who knows who was going to be in that conference room or however you justify it. So I think that he’s going to have to slowly reckon with, not immediately reckon with the consequences.

Then there’s the Sherlock of it. First of all, the handwriting for the messages — “Goodbye Watson” and the “Sherlock Holmes was here” on the wall, is that supposed to be from the same person?

Maybe.

I was comparing the two, and the Ses, Os, and Ws in particular look different. What can you say about what’s going on with Sherlock?

Yeah, I think that Watson — Sherlock has only been in three episodes of the season, but his behavior is growing more and more concerning to Watson. I think obviously if you look back at what’s been there, it would be reasonable to say that character has never been seen by anybody else, but there are also clues that indicate that he may be real. And so all of that will be — there is a consistent answer to all of it that is, well, to me, of course, not having written it all yet, I think surprising and satisfying. But I think one thing I might say is whatever you think about what’s going on with Sherlock, you’re at least partially right.

While Watson and Sherlock were walking down the hall, I was trying so hard to track eye lines to see who people were looking at. But what can you say about your approach to the Sherlock scenes? Because there is this question of what exactly is going on. Is he real, is he not?

I think that Watson would like to, it’s one of the most meaningful relationships of his life, so he would like to believe and that Sherlock is back and Sherlock is real, and Sherlock is very eccentric. The things they experienced during the adventure of the cobalt fisher are real. And so that diagnosis is of genuine concern. Watson was also part of that adventure, so I think he’s not, you will see him get very quickly to sort of where I think a lot of the audience is right now, but he’s perhaps a little bit more used to Sherlock’s eccentricities and he’s reluctantly making his way towards the difficult truth.

These symptoms and the ones that he lists for Ingrid, she comes to this brain tumor diagnosis. Can you say whether or not whatever is going on, whoever these symptoms belong to, whoever this diagnosis is for, is brain tumor the right track?

I think we’re dealing with good doctors. I would say that, yeah.

What had you wanted to do with Watson this season in the immediate aftermath of dealing with Moriarty?

I/we wanted to tell a story about who this character is when dealing with the stuff of life rather than with a nemesis. I mean, I think when you have Moriarty, I was pleased with the story that we told about Moriarty, but I definitely didn’t want Season 2 of Watson to be like, and now this is the story of Gruner or Moran or that each season you have some villain lurking around the hospital in Pittsburgh. I wanted to tell a story about what’s meaningful in life to Watson, and that’s why love, friendship, his relationship with the fellows, it’s all —it is fun to explore it outside of the context of a fight with an adversary.

But could we see those villains you mentioned in future seasons?

Of course.

Talk about addressing mortality this season like you are.

I think writing a medical show is a little bit of a stakes cheat code because you’re wrestling with sickness and death every single episode. And so yes, it’s always tempted to put your characters through that as well, whether they’re sick or other characters may face question of mortality in other contexts this year.

This Pittsburgh mystery is intriguing. Is that something you’re going to be diving into when the show returns, or are you more so looking at the Sherlock of that part of it?

No, that’s going to be paid off in some way. Sherlock has a clear belief about what’s there in that room, and we will answer from the audience whether that’s true or whether it isn’t.

Speaking of that room, I love that abandoned wing. To me, it kind of feels like Watson’s version of Sherlock’s mind palace in a way, like your twist on it. Why did you want to introduce and show us this place that Watson is going to at this point in the series?

When I was thinking about the Season 2, I wanted a new spot. I wanted a private place for Watson. The city of Pittsburgh, which is my hometown, is full of these beautiful, forgotten spaces. There’s a lot of, at least in old, in terms of the United States, there’s a lot of old money that built Pittsburgh because it was once a steel town. So there are these beautiful spaces that have fallen into disrepair, and so it just felt like a natural place for Watson to go and think, and then for Watson and Sherlock to have scenes as well.

The character of Beck (Noah Mills) is so intriguing. I’m nervous about what he’s doing with Sasha (Inga Schlingmann), messing with her, those birth mother emails. Why did he narrow in on Sasha now? Or is he going through everyone at the clinic?

Well, I think that one of the things that’s true about people with Beck’s diagnosis, which obviously he shares to some degree with Ingrid, is a large ego that is easily wounded. And in the episode where Beck was in the clinic with them, when the character Fitz took over the place and forced them to treat his daughter, she wounded his ego in a pretty significant way. And I think he is not one to take that easily.

But we know that he was interested in the clinic before that. So is the way that he’s messing with Sasha kind of a side thing from his interest in the clinic or is that tied together?

I think it is a side thing. He was interested in the clinic as a potential profit center. I think Beck is definitely one who is looking for windfalls in his life for, I don’t know if you would say get rich quick, but he definitely was curious about what’s going on in the clinic. The clinic will still present financial opportunities to him in the back half of the season, just not in the way he was expecting when he first started sniffing around.

Is he a real threat, in a life-or-death way, to these doctors or is it more just the way that he’s messing with them?

I think Beck is very capable, more than any character we’ve met on the show, including Moriarty. I think Beck would stab you and kill you. Obviously the circumstances would have to be right. But yes, I think he’s a threat.

So Sasha says that whatever happened, she’s going to be fine. The longer that goes on, how long can that remain true?

I mean, if you believe you’re talking to your birth mother and you’re developing a relationship with that person, you are to me, by definition, making yourself vulnerable. I think that was perhaps a bit of wishful thinking on Sasha’s part.

I really like what you’ve been doing with Sasha and Stephens’ (Peter Mark Kendall) relationship in this first part of the season. What’s coming up there and what did you want to do with them up to this point?

I think we wanted to present a healthy relationship in its newer stages at a realistic pace and not artificially introduce drastic twists and turns. There’s plenty going on with Sasha and Stephens, in my opinion, in the first half of the season, but their relationship is presented as something that is just working for both of them. And even though Stevens is learning about his own diagnosis and Sasha has things going on as well, they’re happy with each other and they’re enjoying the glow of a new relationship and they’re having lots of sex like you’d hope to have with a new partner. So that’s an aspect of life that is wonderful when you’re lucky enough to be involved in it. And so we want to do that in a non-rushed way. We do start to present some challenges to that relationship in the second half of the season.

Inga Schlingmann as Dr. Sasha Lubbock — 'Watson' Season 2 Episode 10 "Never Been CRISPR'd"

Colin Bentley/CBS

And that’s kind of in contrast to what’s going on with what we’re seeing with Adam.

Well, I mean, Adam has big challenges ahead. Adam is a Peter Pan figure who is about to have not one but three children at the same time. And so he’s really going to go through some big changes as he faces that reality.

Shinwell (Ritchie Coster) with a potential romance has been fun to see, as has him as a nursing student and what you’ve been doing with him there. Are we going to continue to see him growing in that way and building out a life that’s maybe not something that he thought he would ever have for himself given his past?

Yes. I think really good things have come into his life. I think that there’s an inherent kindness to that character in spite of the things that he’s done, but I don’t even know if, based on what we’ve seen, you can even call it a potential romance anymore, they’re definitely into something. And so yeah, you’re going to see him have to fight for the version of himself that he has right now as we advance through the season.

I love when we see Lestrade (Rachel Hayward). She’s just so fun. Are there any other Sherlock Holmes characters coming up this season?

I think we’re pretty full. We have this gallery where we’re trying to fight to get everybody in. I wouldn’t say we’re going to drop an arc with Henry Baskerville. It’s nice to have those characters out there and to be able to think about them, but we’re sort of playing in the sandboxing with the characters that we have.

What can you tease about the next time we see Sherlock?

Major advancements, clarity for Watson about the situation.

And what else can you tease about what’s coming up in the rest of the season?

I think that the season is about, as you’ve intuited, friendship and mortality, and you’re going to see major developments in the life of our main character, challenges that he wasn’t anticipating. It is about what happens — you can believe like, oh, I need to grow into the kind of person that’s worthy of the love I once had. But when chaos comes into your life, it presents a whole new set of challenges.

See Full List of Finalists

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

The USC Libraries have named the 2026 finalists for their 38th annual Scripter Awards, which honor the year’s most accomplished adaptations of the written word for the screen. The awards, which go to one film and one television series, recognize both the authors of the original works and the screenwriters who adapted them.

Additionally, author Michael Connelly, responsible for the novels that became hit television series like “Bosch” and “The Lincoln Lawyer,” will accept the USC Libraries Literary Achievement Award at the Scripter ceremony for his contributions to the art of mystery storytelling, both on the page and on the screen.

Jules Cote appears in Some Kind of Refuge by Alexandra Kern, an official selection of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

On the film side, the Scripter Award has been a serious bellwether for the Oscars, having predicted four out of five of the last few Best Adapted Screenplay award winners. Screenwriter Peter Straughan, who won the film award in 2025 for “Conclave” alongside novelist Robert Harris, is nominated again this year for the TV award for his work adapting Hilary Mantel’s novel “The Mirror and the Light” into the PBS series “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light.”

One unique element to the Scripter Awards is that, in their focus on honoring the written word as a source of inspiration for screen storytellers, only works adapted from books or book series, novellas, short stories, graphic novels, plays, or magazine articles are eligible. The rules have changed this year for video game adaptations like “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” to no longer be eligible. Characters originating in previously published works are also not considered eligible source material, so films like “Wake Up Dead Man” and “Bugonia” were not in the running for the film award.

The 2026 Scripter selection committee selected the finalists from a field of 43 film and 64 television adaptations. USC professor Howard Rodman, a former president of the Writers Guild of America, West, chairs the committee, which includes journalists, authors, screenwriters, producers, and Elizabeth Daley, dean of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

The USC Libraries will announce the winning authors and screenwriters at a black-tie ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, in the Town & Gown ballroom at the University of Southern California.

The finalist writers for film adaptation are, in alphabetical order by film title:

Guillermo del Toro for “Frankenstein” based on the novel “Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus” by Mary Shelley

Chloe Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell for “Hamnet” based on O’Farrell’s novel of the same name

Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another” based on the novel “Vineland” by Thomas Pynchon

Ira Sachs for “Peter Hujar’s Day” based on the book of the same name by Linda Rosenkrantz

Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar for “Train Dreams” based on the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson

The finalist writers for episodic series are, in alphabetical order by series title:

Max Hurwitz and Billy Luther for the episode “Ábidoo’niidę́ę́ (What He Had Been Told),” from “Dark Winds,” based on the novels “Dancehall of the Dead” and “The Sinister Pig” by Tony Hillerman

Mike Makowsky for the episode “Destiny of the Republic,” from “Death by Lightning,” based on Candice Millard’s nonfiction book “Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President”

Chandni Lakhani and Scott Frank for the untitled first episode of “Dept. Q,” based on the novel “The Keeper of Lost Causes” by Jussi Adler-Olsen

Will Smith for the episode “Scars,” from “Slow Horses,” based on the novel “London Rules” by Mick Herron

Peter Straughan for the series “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,” based on the novel “The Mirror and the Light” by Hilary Mantel

‘Zootopia 2’ Dominates Again as Local Titles Hold

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Disney’s animated sequel “Zootopia 2” continued to tower over the Korean box office, delivering $6.7 million from more than 1 million admissions over the Dec. 12–14 frame. According to KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the film now stands at a commanding $35.2 million cumulative gross since its Nov. 26 debut, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the weekend’s total market share.

Local comedy-drama “The People Upstairs” held firmly in second place, adding $948,236 to lift its total to $2.6 million after two weekends in release. The film drew 140,352 admissions across 768 screens, remaining the strongest Korean performer in the chart. Directed by Ha Jung-woo and starring Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Dong-wook, Lee Ha-nee and Ha Jung-woo himself, the film follows a downstairs couple driven to exhaustion by constant noise from their upstairs neighbours. A tense dinner meant to resolve the issue quickly unravels into an evening of sharp confessions and shifting dynamics.

Family fare “Pororo the Movie: Sweet Castle Adventure” opened in third with $449,879 from 74,435 admissions, narrowly edging out Universal’s horror sequel “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” which collected $449,123 and pushed its cumulative tally to $1.2 million.

Japanese action-fantasy “Jujutsu Kaisen: Shibuya Incident / Culling Game – The Movie” followed in fifth, earning $405,974 for a running total of $2 million. Directed by Shōta Goshozono, the film condenses the anime’s Shibuya Incident arc as Yuji Itadori and his allies face a coordinated curse attack on Halloween. The aftermath sets up the looming Culling Game and Yuta Okkotsu’s mission that puts Yuji’s fate in jeopardy.

In sixth place, “Wicked: For Good” added $224,840, bringing its Korean total to $6.4 million. “The Running Man” placed seventh with $115,810 in its second weekend.

South Korean crime comedy “The Informant” slipped to eighth, grossing $86,310 for a cumulative $916,697. Directed by Kim Seok, the film stars Heo Sung-tae and Jo Bok-rae as a compromised smuggling informant and a hapless detective who blunders into the operation. Forced into an uneasy alliance after both take substantial losses, the pair attempt to claw their way back while dismantling the criminal ring.

Illusionist sequel “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” followed with $81,568, lifting its total to $8.7 million.

Rounding out the top 10, Japanese filmmaker Miyake Sho’s Locarno Golden Leopard winner “Two Seasons, Two Strangers” earned $80,278, bringing its cumulative gross to $136,275. Drawing from Tsuge Yoshiharu’s 1967 and 1968 short stories, the film follows a screenwriter named Lee (played by Korean actress Shim Eun-kyung) as she embarks on contrasting seasonal journeys — a summer encounter at a seaside town and a winter retreat to a remote mountain lodge.

The top 10 films collectively grossed $9.5 million over the Dec. 12–14 weekend, down from the previous frame’s $12.1 million.

Finite Films & TV Hires Paddy Hughes In Original Branded Content Push

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: British producer Finite Films & TV has appointed Paddy Hughes as Creative Director to shepherd a slate of original branded content.

The BAFTA-nominated Director and Producer – who has worked in television, subscription streaming, digital and commercial content for 20 years – will work alongside Finite founder and executive producer Amy Gardner, and oversee and develop original content partnerships with brands, including projects for digital-first platforms.

Hughes has produced and directed factual entertainment, documentaries and scripted programming for leading distributors such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Disney and Sky. He has worked as a producer and director for the likes of Little Dot Studios, Future Studios and Cowshed Collective.

He has also landed series commissions for UK and U.S. channels such as BBC3 and Fullscreen, the latter being 2015 short-form scripted sitcom Jack&Dean of All Trades, starring Jack Howard and Dean Dobbs with Jessica Hynes. In 2018, he was nominated for a BAFTA for BBC3’s Eating with My Ex.

This year, he has focused on branded entertainment for Channel 4, and working with Left Bank Pictures to develop a digital drama slate and strategy. He also founded Romalo Film&Creative, a production start-up servicing branded production, YouTube and films.

His hire comes after Finite launched an unscripted division, with celebrity competition series Wings & Waves, made in partnership with global sportswear brand North Sails. Hughes will seek to strike similar partnerships in his role.

“Paddy brings an extraordinary level of experience and creative vision,” said Gardner. “His passion for premium storytelling and knowledge of brand-driven content aligns perfectly with our ambitions, and his appointment signals an exciting next phase for growing our branded slate.”

“My career has taken me from traditional television into the fast and ever evolving world of digital and branded content,” added Hughes. “Finite have some really interesting clients and I’m excited to shape genre busting work that pushes creative boundaries.”

Finite’s scripted slate features the psychological horror, The Fears, from Doctor Who director Andrew Gunn, and Ben & Lucy, starring Steven Cree and directed by Cora Bissett. It will co-produce the first English-language feature film from director Anu Menon, titled Two of Us, alongside Bright Pictures. The company recently attached writer Sophia Al-Maria to its TV series The Many Lives of Miss K.
