Vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar-free tiramisu recipe with simple ingredients: Watch how to make this delicious dessert

written by jummy84

For those with a persistent sweet tooth who refuse to compromise their fitness goals, the search for a ‘clean’ dessert often ends in disappointment. However, model, actor and content creator Vandana Pandit Nidadavolu may have just found the holy grail of healthy indulgence. Also read | Kala chana protein brownies recipe that’s ‘healthy and seriously delicious with each serving packing in 24 g of protein’

Vandana Pandit Nidadavolu presents a healthy tiramisu recipe using ragi flour and bananas for the base, replacing heavy cream with a cashew blend. (Freepik)

In an Instagram video shared on March 14, Vandana unveiled her recipe for a ‘vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar-free tiramisu made with simple ingredients’. The recipe aims to provide a nutrient-dense alternative to the classic Italian dessert without the heavy mascarpone or processed sugars.

The ‘healthier’ biscuit base

Unlike traditional ladyfingers made with refined flour and eggs, Vandana’s version uses ragi flour, a gluten-free millet known for its high calcium and fibre content.

“Mash the banana well,” Vandana instructs, serving as the natural sweetener for the base – add ragi flour and baking powder and mix. Add water gradually until a smooth batter forms. To achieve the classic tiramisu structure, she advises people to ‘pipe or spread the batter onto a lined baking tray in finger shapes’. The biscuits are then baked at 180°C for 15 minutes until set.

The heart of a tiramisu is its cream. To keep it vegan and refined-sugar-free, Vandana swaps heavy cream for a cashew blend with natural sweeteners. The assembly follows the traditional method but with a mindful twist. To ensure the ragi biscuits maintain the right texture, she suggests a quick soak. For the best results, she recommends a final chill, advising dessert lovers to ‘refrigerate for at least 60 minutes before serving’.

Why this recipe can work for you

This recipe addresses three major concerns for healthy eaters: refined sugar, gut health, and satiety. It uses bananas and honey/maple syrup to reduce its glycemic impact, incorporates ragi, which is easier on the digestive system for those with gluten sensitivities, and the healthy fats from the cashews mean you’ll feel satisfied with a smaller portion compared to traditional, sugar-heavy desserts. Whether you are a seasoned vegan or just someone trying to ‘eat clean’ while enjoying the finer things in life, this simple take on a classic is a must-try.

Here is Vandana’s step-by-step recipe for ‘vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar-free tiramisu’:

Ingredients and instructions for biscuits

• 1 ripe banana

• ½ cup ragi flour

• ¼ tsp baking powder

• Water (to adjust consistency)

Mash the banana well. Add ragi flour and baking powder and mix. Add water gradually to form a smooth batter (like shown in the reel). Pipe or spread the batter onto a lined baking tray in finger shapes (as shown in the video). Bake at 180°C for 15 minutes. Let them cool.

Ingredients and instructions for cashew cream

• ½ cup cashews (soaked in hot water for 20 minutes)

• 3 tbsp honey or maple syrup

• ½ tbsp lemon juice

• ½ tsp vanilla essence

• A pinch of salt

Blend everything until smooth and creamy. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Assembly

• ½ cup espresso or strong instant coffee

• Cocoa powder for dusting

Dip the biscuits lightly in coffee. Layer biscuits and cashew cream in a bowl. Repeat the layers and finish with a dusting of cocoa powder on top.

Refrigerate for at least 60 minutes before serving

Florida-based longevity doctor rates popular superfoods: Blueberries, granola, acai bowl, and more

by jummy84 December 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Superfoods are nutrient-dense whole foods that offer significant health benefits such as reduced risk of diseases and inflammation. However, with food fads being popular on social media, it is difficult to identify what can truly be placed in that category.

Acai bowls are not as healthy as they appear to be, warns Dr Hoz. (Pexels)

Taking to Instagram on November 9, Dr Carlos De La Hoz, Florida-based anesthesiologist, regenerative medicine, and pain management doctor, rated commonly known superfoods out of 10, to help us make an informed decision about which to include in our diet.

“Some foods support cellular health and lower inflammation… others are marketed as ‘healthy’ but simply are not,” he wrote in the caption.

Wild salmon – 10/10

Wild salmon deserves the perfect score, according to Dr Hoz, as they are a great source of Omega-3s and rich in good fats which are beneficial for the brain and the heart, as well as for reducing inflammation.

Blueberries – 10/10

Another perfect contender, Dr Hoz stated that blueberries are likely the best fruit that we can eat pound for pound. It is full of antioxidants and polyphenols, and can be mixed into a wide variety of things to make a great snack. Putting blueberries in a bowl with yoghurt further enhances the benefits.

Granola – 1/10

Dr Hoz described granola as “mostly oats filled full of sugar, more like a dessert (and) not really a longevity food at all.”

Extra-virgin olive oil – 9/10

“The best fat that we have either for salads or cooking,” shared Dr Hoz about olive oil. “Full of oleic acid and good fats.” Olive oil has been associated with longevity, as people who reside in places that regularly use it are known to have a longer lifespan.

Avocados – 8/10

Avocados are a very good source of monounsaturated fats, which are basically good fats. However, portion size matters, and we need to be mindful of the amount that we consume.

Turmeric + black pepper – 8/10

Adding black pepper to turmeric increases its absorption and anti-inflammatory power “up to 2000-3000%,” noted Dr Hoz.

Acai bowls – 3/10

The physician explained the low score of the aesthetically pleasing food by stating, “The fruit itself is very good. If you find the fruit frozen without any added sugar, it could work. The problem is that most of these bowls have either granola or a lot of sweet and sugar, so that destroys the whole purpose.”

A1 vs A2 milk? Expert explains which milk variant may benefit gut and skin health more

by jummy84 December 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Published on: Dec 13, 2025 04:00 pm IST

All milk isn’t the same. Two versions of the same protein, A1 and A2 β-casein, have sparked debate over which one is more beneficial for gut health and skin.

Milk is widely known for its nutritional benefits, which range from helping to build strong bones with calcium to supporting muscle repair with protein and providing essential vitamins like B12 and D for energy. In recent years, there’s more awareness around the distinction between the two types of milk, A1 and A2. While both are consumed just like regular milk, they differ in their protein structure and animal source. A2 milk comes from Indian cow breeds such as Gir and Sahiwal and is often considered easier to digest for some individuals. On the other hand, A1 milk typically comes from Western cow breeds like Holstein and Jersey and is commonly available in the market.

Which is good—A1 or A2 milk?(Freepik)

To understand these differences better, Health Shots spoke to Vidhi Chawla, Dietician and Founder of FISICO Diet and Aesthetic Clinic, who explains how each type of milk may impact gut and skin health differently.

“Milk has long been considered a nutritional staple, but in recent years, the debate between A1 and A2 milk has gained attention, particularly for its impact on gut health and skin. Understanding the difference between the two can help individuals make an informed choice based on how their body responds,” says Chawla.

What’s the difference between A1 milk and A2 milk?

A1 and A2 are the kinds of milk with a similar method of consumption, but the compounds and sources are what make them different from each other. The dietitian says their key distinction lies in the type of beta-casein protein present in the milk. Regular milk is a mix of both the A1 and A2.

  • When A1 β-casein is digested, it can release a small peptide called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7). A2 β-casein is much less likely to release BCM-7.
  • BCM-7 can act on opioid receptors and may affect gut physiology and immune responses, says PMC.
  • It means that A2 milk breaks down smoothly and does not form a certain peptide. Whereas A1 milk forms a peptide called BCM-7.

What is the role of BCM-7 in gut health?

  • This peptide can shift gut microbial fermentation patterns and short-chain fatty acid profiles, which could indirectly influence systemic inflammation and skin. Evidence is emerging and not yet definitive in this regarding, according to PubMed Central.
  • Whereas, as per the MDPI journal, it can trigger digestive symptoms, such as abdominal discomfort. However, it is also suggested that the possibility exists that these adverse effects are restricted to only a portion of the population.

A study cited in Research Gate also suggests that A1 milk and the peptide BCM-7 may be linked to heart disease, diabetes, autism, sudden death of infants, and inflammation in the digestive system. The results are mixed, and further studies are needed.

Impact on Skin Health

The dietician says that gut health and skin health are closely linked through the gut–skin axis.

  • Digestive inflammation caused by A1 milk in sensitive individuals may indirectly reflect on the skin as acne, dullness, or flare-ups of eczema.
  • A2 milk, being easier to digest, may help reduce internal inflammation, which can support clearer skin, better hydration, and an improved skin barrier over time.
  • It is important to note that milk affects skin differently across individuals. Total diet quality, hormonal health, and overall gut balance also play a role.

What does the clinical evidence show?

  • In a double-blind, randomized crossover trial of 41 adults, consumption of A1 β-casein milk (vs. A2) led to significantly higher stool consistency (softer stools), and abdominal pain correlated with stool softness only during the A1 phase, not during the A2 phase, according to PubMed.
  • A 2016 randomized crossover study (on individuals with self-reported dairy intolerance) found that switching to milk containing only A2 β-casein was associated with fewer gastrointestinal symptoms, lower markers of inflammation, longer colonic SCFA (short-chain fatty acid) production, and shorter transit times compared with regular milk containing A1/A2 β-casein, says MDPI.
  • PubMed says A2 may be better tolerated and more “microbiome-friendly” to some people.

What to try and what to expect?

For those experiencing digestive discomfort or recurring skin issues, Vidhi Chawla suggests:

  • Try switching to A2 milk consistently for 2–3 weeks.
  • Observe changes in digestion, bloating, bowel regularity, and skin texture.
  • Choose plain, unsweetened, minimally processed A2 milk without additives.
  • If symptoms persist, it may be worth exploring overall dairy intake or alternative calcium sources under professional guidance.

Lilli Reinhart reveals endometriosis diagnosis after ‘multiple urologists and gynecologists’ dismissed her symptoms

by jummy84 December 12, 2025

Actor Lilli Reinhart has shared her diagnosis of endometriosis – a chronic disease whose symptoms include severe pain during menstruation and heavy menstrual bleeding – which was officially confirmed last week following laparoscopic surgery. Lilli Reinhart announced her endometriosis diagnosis, confirmed by laparoscopic surgery, and shared a candid Instagram post detailing her journey. (Instagram/ Lilli Reinhart)

In a candid Instagram post on December 11, the Riverdale actor shared hospital photos and detailed her frustrating and protracted journey to receive an accurate diagnosis, highlighting the importance of self-advocacy.

‘I was told there was no cure’

Lilli’s health struggles began earlier, when she was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis (IC) last year after consulting a urogynecologist. She was told there was ‘no cure for her symptoms’, a period that involved three hospital visits and consultations with multiple urologists and gynecologists.

“Last week, I was officially diagnosed with endometriosis following laparoscopic surgery. Last year, I saw a urogynecologist and was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. I was told there was no cure — and no lasting relief — for my symptoms. Three hospital visits. Multiple urologists and gynecologists. And not one of them seriously considered endometriosis as the underlying cause of what I was experiencing,” Lilli wrote in her Instagram caption, shedding light on the common diagnostic challenges faced by those with the condition.

Actor’s path to diagnosis

The key turning point in her health journey came through working with pelvic floor therapists. Lilli said that it was through their guidance that ‘the word endometriosis was even mentioned to her as a possible source of her pain’. Her self-advocacy led her to pursue an MRI on her own, which revealed a diagnosis of adenomyosis, a condition where endometrial tissue grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. This, in turn, prompted her to meet with an endometriosis specialist who recommended laparoscopic surgery.

Highlighting the persistent challenge of medical dismissal, Lilli wrote, “It wasn’t until I worked with two different pelvic floor therapists that the word endometriosis was even mentioned to me as a possible source of my pain. I pushed for an MRI on my own, which led to a diagnosis of adenomyosis. From there, I met with an endometriosis specialist who helped me decide that laparoscopic surgery was the next step I wanted to take — while, at the same time, another gynecologist told me I ‘probably didn’t have endo’ and should just go on the pill.”

Raising awareness for a misunderstood disease

Lilli expressed relief in trusting her instincts and stressed the necessity of others doing the same. “I’m glad I trusted my body and listened to my gut and will continue advocating for others to do so,” she said.

Lilli used her platform to raise awareness about the scale and severity of the disease. The actor shared that endometriosis is “an extremely misunderstood disease, leaving often a 4-11 year gap between symptoms and a definitive surgical diagnosis.” The World Health Organisation estimates that 1 in 10 people with uteruses have endo, she added.

Her announcement is expected to bring greater visibility to the chronic condition, which involves tissue similar to the lining of the uterus growing outside of the uterus, causing significant pain and other health complications.

Did you know your nails can signal psoriasis? Doctor shares 5 changes in hands and nails indicating underlying disease

by jummy84 December 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Long before a health condition becomes obvious, the body often sends out quiet, easily overlooked signals that something isn’t quite right. While some warning signs are well known, others can seem unusual or unrelated at first glance – making them harder to recognise or connect to an underlying illness. This is where awareness becomes powerful, especially when it comes to subtle changes in the hands and nails that can offer valuable clues about what’s happening inside the body.

Swollen hand joints can be a sign of arthritis.(Unsplash)

Also Read | Delhi cardiologist with 40 years experience shares 5 warning signs your heart is struggling silently

Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine physician, has highlighted five key changes in the nails and hands that may signal underlying health issues – and in some cases, chronic conditions such as arthritis or psoriasis. In an Instagram video shared on December 9, the physician explains that recognising these subtle signs early can aid in identifying serious health conditions and support timely diagnosis and treatment.

Clubbing

According to Dr Kunal Sood, clubbing causes the fingertips to appear rounded with curved nails as the soft tissue enlarges – a physical change that can sometimes signal underlying lung or heart disease. He explains, “It occurs when megakaryocytes bypass the lungs and release growth factors like VEGF and PDGF at the fingertips. It is linked to chronic lung disease (lung cancer, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis) and heart conditions with long-term low oxygen such as cyanotic congenital heart disease or endocarditis.”

Spoon-shaped nails

Koilonychia or spoon-shaped nails might be an early warning sign of iron deficiency anaemia. Dr Sood highlights, “Koilonychia creates thin, concave nails due to impaired keratin formation when iron-dependent enzymes weaken. It often reflects iron deficiency from blood loss, heavy periods, low intake, malabsorption, or increased need in pregnancy. These nail changes can precede other symptoms for months.”

Red nail streaks

If you notice red streaks on your nails, Dr Sood states that it might be an indication of blood vessel inflammation. He explains, “Splinter hemorrhages look like red-brown lines under the nails from ruptured capillaries. While trauma is common, multiple streaks or those near the nail base raise concern for systemic conditions such as vasculitis, lupus, connective-tissue disease, or infective endocarditis.”

Swollen finger joints

Swollen joints on your fingers are a classic sign of arthritis. The physician points out, “Swelling may reflect osteoarthritis from cartilage loss or inflammatory arthritis like rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis involving synovial inflammation. Because trauma, gout or metabolic issues can mimic this finding, clinical exam and imaging help distinguish causes.”

Pitting in nails

According to Dr Sood, pitting in nails is a hallmark sign of nail-matrix involvement in psoriasis. He elaborates, “About one-third of psoriasis patients show pits, and prevalence increases with disease duration. It may accompany discoloration, thickening or onycholysis and is common in psoriatic arthritis, making it a useful early clue.”

Is papaya safe during pregnancy? Gynaecologist shares the benefits and risks of eating this fruit

Pregnancy is a time of joy and excitement, but it also means paying close attention to what you eat for your own and the baby’s well-being. This fruit is rich in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Still, there is always a debate about whether it is safe to eat papaya during pregnancy.

Papaya is believed to be heat-inducing and pregnant women are often told to avoid it. (Adobe Stock)

Papaya is a very healthy fruit. It contains a lot of folate, potassium, and fibre. It is also a good source of vitamin C, which helps keep your immune system strong and supports your baby’s growth during pregnancy. “Papaya can help with digestion, easing common problems such as constipation, bloating, and heartburn”, Dr Sonamm Tiwari, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Hiranandani Hospital Vashi, tells Health Shots.

While papaya has many benefits, it’s important to know its risks during pregnancy. Dr Tiwari warns: “The enzyme papain in papaya can cause uterine contractions, which may lead to miscarriage or preterm labour”. Unripe or semi-ripe papaya is even riskier, as it can cause the amniotic sac to rupture, resulting in a loss of amniotic fluid that can harm the feotus.

Dr Tiwari further says that “pregnant women should be cautious, especially in the later stages of pregnancy, when risks can increase. Expectant mothers should stay informed about these risks as they make dietary decisions.”

Is unripe papaya better than ripe papaya during pregnancy?

Eating papaya during pregnancy requires caution. Papaya contains phytoestrogens, natural compounds that can mimic estrogen in the body. Even ripe papayas may disrupt hormones and potentially cause problems such as low birth weight or developmental issues for the baby. Dr Tiwari advises, “It is important to be careful and eat papaya in moderation.”

Should you totally avoid papaya during pregnancy?

According to Dr Tiwari, the answer is “not necessarily”. If you still want to enjoy this tropical fruit, the expert shares some tips on how to do so safely:

  • Choose fully ripe papayas: Unripe papayas have much higher levels of papain compared to ripe ones, making ripe papayas a safer option for pregnant women.
  • Practice moderation: “If you decide to eat papaya, limit yourself to no more than 1 cup of fully ripe fruit per day,” the doctor says. Pay attention to your body; if you feel any discomfort, stop eating it right away.
  • Consult a healthcare professional: If you have any concerns about eating papaya during your pregnancy, it’s important to talk to your doctor for personalised advice. Every pregnancy is different.

What to do if you accidentally ate papaya during pregnancy?

Mistakes happen. If you accidentally ate papaya, stay calm. Eating a small amount usually won’t cause harm. “Watch for any unusual symptoms, such as allergic reactions, stomach problems, or uterine contractions”, shares the doctor. If you notice anything unusual or have concerns, contact your healthcare provider. They can support you through this.

Travel without back pain: Tips for long flights, road trips, how to carry luggage and more

by jummy84 December 6, 2025

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a new destination, the excitement of airports, and the open road ahead. But let’s be honest, the fun can quickly fade when your back starts acting up. Long flights in economy, hours on the road, or dragging heavy luggage can leave your spine aching, turning what should be a joyful experience into a discomfort-filled ordeal.

Top tips to help you avoid back pain while travelling

Dr Arun Bhanot, Director of Spine Surgery at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, gives practical tips for keeping back pain at bay while travelling. His advice is simple and actionable, perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy their trip without worrying about their spine.

1. Plan for comfort before you leave

Preparation makes all the difference. Wear supportive shoes and loose, comfortable clothing. Keep a lumbar pillow or back brace in your carry-on for easy access. On flights, choose seats with extra legroom if possible, and in cars, the front passenger seat gives more space to adjust and stretch.

2. Maintain good posture on long flights

Aeroplane seats are rarely kind to your spine. Use a rolled-up jacket or travel pillow behind your lower back to maintain natural alignment. Keep feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing legs. Adjust your seat angle periodically and try small stretches in your seat to prevent stiffness.

3. Move often

Remaining seated for long periods increases tension and pressure on your back. Stand up, walk along the aisle or stretch every 30 to 60 minutes. Shoulder rolls, ankle circles, and gentle back twists help keep muscles flexible and ready to move when you land.

4. Support your spine on road trips

Car journeys can be deceptively tough on the back. Adjust your seat so hips and knees are level, and use a cushion for lower back support if needed. Stop every hour to walk and stretch. Keep your hands comfortably on the wheel to avoid hunching or leaning forward.

5. Lift luggage smartly

Back strain often comes from lifting heavy bags incorrectly. Bend your knees, hold luggage close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting. Wheeled suitcases, backpacks with padded straps, or dividing weight into multiple lighter bags can prevent unnecessary strain.

6. Use supportive travel gear

A lumbar cushion, neck pillow, or compression socks can make a surprising difference. For long trips, a small massage ball or portable heating pad helps release tight muscles during stops.

7. Stay hydrated and stretch

Dehydration worsens muscle tension, so drink water often. Gentle stretches for the hamstrings, hip flexors, and lower back counteract the effects of long periods of sitting and keep your body ready to move.

Travel doesn’t need to come with a sore back. With a few adjustments, mindful movement, and smart travel gear, you can enjoy your flights, road trips, and luggage handling comfortably, keeping your spine happy from start to finish.

Simple habits like good posture, regular stretching, and smart luggage choices can make all the difference. A little preparation ensures your back stays comfortable, leaving you free to focus on the joys of your trip.

Get to know… Kashika Kapoor

by jummy84 December 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Currently I am: Shooting for three films, juggling early call times, the gym, workshops and airports.

Actor Kashika Kapoor wishes she could pause time to sleep and rehearse more.

High point in life: Watching my movies, series, and songs connect so deeply with people.

Low point in life: My formative years. It’s when I learnt discipline, sharpened my craft and understood myself better.

On my playlist: Dil Pe Zakhm, by Jubin Nautiyal; Love Me Like You Do, by Ellie Goulding; Naatu Naatu, by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava.

One thing I would never buy: Something showy just for validation.

Today I’m craving: Homemade rajma chawal.

Last thing I ordered online: A vintage-typewriter-style keyboard to type my character notes.

App I check before bed: My Notes app, where I write my thoughts, ideas, dialogues and dreams.

Advice I’d give my 18-year-old self: “I’m so proud of you. Keep going with the same fire, it will all unfold beautifully.”

My favourite subject in school: English Literature.

I’d swipe right on: Honesty, with a sense of calm.

My secret skill: I can switch between emotions instantly.

A magic tool I wish I had: A device to pause time. Then I’d rehearse more, sleep more, and live more.

My favourite Sunday memory: Playing basketball for hours and coming home to my mom’s hot parathas. Sunlight, sweat, laughter—simple happiness!

My plans for next Sunday: Either perfecting a new choreography or treating myself to a slow morning with good music and coffee.

My most star-struck moment: I don’t get star-struck. I connect more with someone’s work.

My favourite bad habit: Overworking.

If I could travel back or forward in time, I’d: Go forward to see the films I’ll do and the person I’ll evolve into.

The best thing about fame: Being able to make people smile, even strangers. And having the chance to tell meaningful stories.

The worst thing about fame: People assume they know every layer of you. I’ve learned to protect my peace.
