“I’m gonna kill that felt fuzzy!” Terror Films has revealed an official trailer for a new horror comedy called The Fuzzies, about evil children’s show puppets come to life. This low budget indie creation is a feature version of filmmaker Josh Funk’s original short film from 2020 also called The Fuzzies. And it features some very cool stop-motion work and puppetry. Childhood friends reunite at the eerie and spooky estate of their famous friend to mourn her passing. They experience what nightmares are made of – as grotesque puppets come alive and sinister stop-motion creatures make them fight for their lives. Starring Rocío de la Grana, Baylee Toney, Dustin Vaught, Gordy Cassel, Karen Leigh Sharp, & Seph Casani. It’s much more playful than scary and more wacky than frightening. Of course it’s a bit similar to Five Nights at Freddy’s, too. There’s also a film at Sundance this year titled Buddy about a killer children’s show mascot. Watch out.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Funk’s horror film The Fuzzies, direct from YouTube:

The Fuzzies is directed by American genre filmmaker Josh Funk, making his feature directorial debut with this project after directing many other short films previously. “She thinks she’s still trapped in captivity!” 🐳 Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a very dumb new horror movie called Killer Whale, an Orca spin on the usual shark movie with all the same tropes. Step aside Free Willy, this one ain’t your friendly killer whale! The story follows best friends Maddie and Trish as they find themselves trapped in a remote lagoon with the dangerous killer whale named Ceto. Their peaceful retreat soon becomes a terrifying fight to stay alive when the ocean’s most bloodthirsty predator seeks vengeance for a brutal life in captivity. Get ’em, Ceto! Killer Whale stars Virginia Gardner, Mel Jarnson, and Mitchell Hope. It’s a lot like these shark movies such as The Shallows, The Reef, or Open Water, but with a few of its own twists. While I don’t enjoy seeing the beautiful Orcas be turned into villains, I’ll let it slide for one horror movie. Alas it looks awful – even the CGI seems worse than most shark movies. Oh well.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Jo-Anne Brechin’s film Killer Whale, direct from YouTube:

Killer Whale Poster

Hold your breath as you witness revenge rise from the deep. After a life-shattering tragedy, Trish (Mel Jarnson) tries to comfort her best friend, Maddie (Virginia Gardner), by bringing her on a spectacular adventure in a private lagoon halfway across the world. Their peaceful retreat soon becomes a terrifying fight to stay alive when the ocean’s most bloodthirsty predator seeks vengeance for a brutal life spent in captivity. A thrill ride of a movie that will leave everyone breathless. Killer Whale is directed by writer / producer / filmmaker Jo-Anne Brechin, director of the films Paper Champions, When Love Springs, One Perfect Match, Designing Christmas with You previously. The screenplay is written by Katharine E. McPhee, Jo-Anne Brechin. Produced by Lionel Hicks, Steve Jaggi, Kylie Pascoe. Lionsgate debuts Brechin’s Killer Whale movie in theaters + on VOD starting January 16th, 2026 coming soon. Who wants to watch this?

Geena Davis Institute Study Shows Film Lacks Stories of Women Aging

by jummy84 December 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The Geena Davis Institute has unveiled a new study showing how menopause and aging are portrayed in the 100 top-grossing domestic films from 2009 to 2024 that prominently feature women ages 40 and older on screen.

Key findings in the study called, “Missing in action: Writing a new narrative for women in midlife on the big screen,” showed how menopause is nearly invisible: Of the 225 films prominently featuring a 40-plus female character released between 2009 and 2024, only 6% (or 14 films) mentioned menopause. These mentions were usually side comments. Only one film featured a prominent menopause storyline.

Furthermore, menopause was often used as a comedic device. When featured, it was used as a joke to explain women’s anger or mood swings, and even non-menopausal characters were assumed to be menopausal when they expressed anger.

The study also revealed that 40-plus female characters were appearing in fewer comedies, pointing to a strong link between menopause mentions and comedy.

The findings showed how general aging narratives were more frequent. Yet the narratives between men and women aging were vastly different. Women ages 40 and older on screen were twice as likely as men to have a narrative focused on physical aging (15% vs. 7%). Overall, 23 characters shown engaging in cosmetic treatments, 17 (74%) were women. Male characters’ treatments were minor (i.e., dye for graying hair, nose trimming, botox), while women’s treatments often involved surgery or fantastical interventions to restore youth (i.e., vaginal rejuvenation, brow lifts, liposuction).

Another finding showed the sad widow trope and how Hollywood narratives centered on grief and loneliness. In the 225 films that were analyzed, 19 featured “sad widows,” compared with eight featuring “sad widowers,” suggesting aging is more often framed as a story of loss for women than for men.

Findings showed there was a desire for better representation. Overall, 2 in 3 respondents (67%) agree on the importance of realistic portrayals of menopause on screen (72% men, 63% women). This signals a broad audience appetite for menopause stories that move beyond jokes or silence.

The report concluded that the absence of women over 50 in Hollywood, especially as romantic leads, likely reinforces negative stereotypes about women, aging and sexuality.

The study found that audiences across age, gender, and race want more realistic portrayals of menopause.

Madeline Di Nonno, President & CEO of the Geena Davis Institute said Hollywoood needs to do better. In a statement, Di Nonno said, “Womanhood is more than reproduction. One of the more damaging narratives about menopause is that it ‘feels like the finish line for women, whose value in society is being reduced to motherhood.’”

She went on to say, “Avoid characterizations of menopause that conflate womanhood with fertility, and work to provide a more nuanced and less reductive portrayal of womanhood that treats older women as multidimensional, fully fleshed-out characters. Laugh with menopausal women, not at them.”

The report will be unveiled at the Impact+Profit25 conference hosted by the SIE Society and Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs on Friday afternoon.

Actress Constance Zimmer, a panelist on at the conference commented on how menopause storylines almost never appear unless they’re comedic — and even then, they’re often inaccurate or dismissive. Zimmer called for Hollywood storytellers to be more authentic to female storytelling. In a statement, she said, ‘If we take my beloved character Quinn King for example, an unapologetic, revenge driven, crisis loving bad bitch who was clearly and silently going through perimenopause – i now know – having gone through it myself – that we missed so many layers to her story line. She wasn’t simply filled with rage – she was witnessing her entire life shift from the inside out. Menopause is not the side character – she is the leading lady.”

Dominique Debroux, producer of the documentary, “Wise Women” said, “The Geena Davis Institute’s data exposes these gaps, and the ‘Wise Women’ documentary adds the science showing that women’s contributions have always been far broader, strategic, communal, and essential to our successful evolution.” She went on to say, “The real barrier now is investment. There is no shortage of powerful stories about women’s identity, purpose, and wisdom. What’s missing is the willingness to finance them, somehow overlooking the size of the audience (70 million 50+ women just in the US & Canada). Hollywood needs to support stories that reflect women’s true range, not just their appearance.”

The study will be published here.

“We need to finish what we started.” Epic Pictures debuted the official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Space/Time, a low budget yet impressive creation from filmmaker Michael O’Halloran. This is getting a direct-to-VOD release starting in January but we don’t know much else about it because it hasn’t played any festivals. A disgraced team of scientists turn to crime to rebuild their space-bending engine that could save humanity’s future or destroy it. When the team sees their funding cut after a fatal disaster, they resort to criminal activity to finance and rebuild their machine. But what will it cost them? From this intro it sounds like an anti-science film which is a pretty bad idea. “We wanted the film to capture the rush of discovering something impossible, that moment when the world suddenly feels bigger & characters are pushed to make choices about what matters most to them,” the director states. Hmm all sounds strange… Space/Time stars Ashlee Lollback, with Hugh Parker, Pacharo Mzembe, Haroon Jafarey-Hall, Shaun King, Rob Horton, Craig Gaffney, & many more. Not sure what to make of this – what are they really going for here?

Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Michael O’Halloran’s sci-fi film Space/Time, from YouTube:

Space/Time Poster

Space/Time Poster

What is the cost of scientific progress? That’s the question at the heart of Space/Time. In a future on the brink of collapse, a team of scientists unveils a space-bending engine that could save humanity. The first test ends in disaster, leaving the project shut down & its creators disgraced. Refusing to let their work vanish, Holt (Hugh Parker), a brilliant but ruthless visionary, and his ambitious assistant, Liv (Ashlee Lollback), turn to the criminal underworld to rebuild the device. As they race against time & the law, the engine becomes more than a chance at survival, it becomes an obsession. With humanity’s future hanging in the balance, the team must face a haunting question: will their creation deliver salvation, or unleash something far worse? Space/Time is directed by Australian filmmaker O’Halloran’s Michael O’Halloran, making his feature directorial debut after a few other shorts. The screenplay is written by Adam Harmer and Michael O’Halloran. It’s produced by Adam Harmer, Jai Hogg, Michael O’Halloran. Epic Pictures will debut O’Halloran’s Space/Time direct-to-VOD starting on January 13th, 2026 early next year. Who’s into this?

“Delightful” film starring late Dame Maggie Smith to air on TV tonight

by jummy84 November 28, 2025
written by jummy84

A “delightful” film starring Maggie Smith alongside a cast of other incredible British actors will be airing on TV tonight.

Quartet was released in 2012 and follows Smith’s character Jean Horton, a former famous opera singer who is moving into Beecham House, a retirement home for those who were once singers and musicians. Jean’s arrival throws the home into disarray due to the fact her former husband Reginald, played by Tom Courtenay, already lives there and is furious he wasn’t warned about her arrival.

As she settles in, the other residents convince Jean to take part in their yearly concert, where they will be doing a performance of the Bella figlia dell’amore quartet from Rigoletto, however she is apprehensive, fearing her voice is not what it used to be. The film offers a comedic insight into ageing, mortality and the power of music.

Those looking to tune in can do so tonight (Friday 28th November) on BBC Two at 11pm with a running time of 94 minutes and will be uploaded to BBC iPlayer shortly after. However, you can also find the film on Prime Video, and it is also available to watch on Sky Cinema.

The film also starred Sheridan Smith as the home’s doctor, with the actress recently opening up about her experience working with the late Maggie Smith during an appearance on The One Show.

She explained: “I was a bag of nerves. There were all these absolute legends, I was so out of my depth, and [Dame Maggie Smith] saw me kind of nearly having a panic attack before this scene, and she just went, ‘Smiths stick together!’”

Quartet was the directorial debut from Hollywood actor Dustin Hoffman and made $59.5 million at the box office against a budget of $11 million.

Those who have seen it ushered their praise of the feature length, saying: “Dustin Hoffman’s first film as a director is a treat for the actors involved, and what actors they are. Hoffman has cast his actors in roles that fit them well and they reward him with fine performances.

“It’s a delightful film that touches on themes of ageing and the enduring importance of art. And the film’s location, Hedsor House in Buckinghamshire, plays a character in its own right, adding splendour to the warmth.”

Alongside both Smiths and Courtenay, the star-studded cast also boosts the likes of Scottish royalty Billy Connolly, Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon, and Pauline Collins of Upstairs, Downstairs fame.

“Do you think that we’re good parents?” Dekanalog has revealed the official US trailer for an acclaimed indie film from Canada titled The Mother and the Bear, made by talented Canadian-Chinese filmmaker Johnny Ma. The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year and it also played at a few other festivals and is finally opening in limited release (in the US) soon. In the snow-swept city of Winnipeg, school teacher Sumi is hospitalized after a fall. On hearing the news, her anxious mother, Sara, flies over from Seoul to be with her comatose daughter — once Sara sets herself up in the young woman’s apartment, she discovers she doesn’t really know Sumi at all. As Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. “A stylized, whimsical narrative of crossed wires, secret lives, and conflicting agendas, the film is ‘a uniquely charming comedy about one woman’s quest to discover more about herself.” Starring Kim Ho-jung, Lee Won-jae, Jonathan Kim, Amara Pedroso, Kalyn Bomback, Susan Hanson, Samantha Kendrick, and Leere Park as Sumi. Looks amusing & heartfelt.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Johnny Ma’s film The Mother and the Bear, from YouTube:

The Mother and the Bear Poster

After 26-year-old Sumi (Leere Park) suffers an accident on the streets of wintry Winnipeg, Canada, her overbearing mother Sara (Kim Ho-jung) flies in from Seoul to be by her now comatose daughter’s side. Desperate to ensure Sumi will have someone to look after her in the future, Sara embarks on a mission to catfish a suitable (preferably Korean) husband before her daughter wakes up. However, as Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. The Mother and the Bear is directed by Canadian-Chinese filmmaker Johnny Ma, director of the films Old Stone and To Live to Sing previously. Produced by Niv Fichman and Juan de Dios Larraín. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year. Dekanalog will debut Johnny Ma’s The Mother and the Bear film in select US theaters starting January 2nd, 2026 early next year. Classic Trailer Rewatch: Danny Boyle’s ‘Sunshine’ Brilliant Sci-Fi Film

“If it dies, we die.” Sarchlight Pictures originally released this sci-fi classic Sunshine back in 2007, but no one went to see it back then when it opened in theaters. Now 18 years later it’s considered one of the best modern sci-fi movies, even with the controversial horror ending. Made by director Danny Boyle & writer Alex Garland as another one of their collabs after the original 28 Days Later (made 5 years before this) the film follows a crew trying to take a special payload to the Sun to help reignite since it’s “dying”. It’s one of my favorite films mostly for the intense realism & attention to detail. And its bleak but fascinating look at how being out in deep space makes people go mad. Sunshine is a sci-fi psychological thriller starring a great cast featuring Cillian Murphy as Capa, with Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Chris Evans, Troy Garity, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film takes place in 2057, where a group of astronauts aboard the Icarus II are sent on a dangerous mission towards the Sun. Posting these old trailers is also another excuse to say again how brilliant this film truly is and how it always deserves a rewatch if it has been a while since you’ve last seen it. Both of these trailers also use the epic Requiem for a Dream song.

Here’s two original trailers (+ the original poster) for Danny Boyle’s sci-fi movie Sunshine, from YouTube:

You can always watch more unforgettable trailers from the past in our “Classic Trailer Rewatch” archives.

In the year 2057, a crew of eight courageous men and women have embarked upon a lengthy journey to the Sun to reignite the dying star and save mankind from extinction. But when a terrible accident throws their mission into jeopardy, the crew find themselves fighting not only for their lives and their sanity, but for the future of us all. Sunshine is directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Danny Boyle, directing his 7th feature film at the time right after Millions (2004) and just before making Slumdog Millionaire (2008) next. The screenplay is written by Alex Garland. Produced by Andrew Macdonald; co-produced by Bernard Bellew. This initially premiered at the 2007 Fantasy Filmfest in Germany before opening in theaters in the US starting on July 20th, 2007. It only earned $3.6M at the US box office that year but has since become a beloved favorite of many sci-fi fans. Searchlight Pictures has the movie available to watch on VOD anytime.

Programmers Track a New Wave of Arab Filmmakers at Cairo Film Festival

Programmers Track a New Wave of Arab Filmmakers at Cairo Film Festival

by jummy84 November 16, 2025
written by jummy84

At the 46th edition of the Cairo Intl. Film Festival, programmers from some of the world’s leading festivals are finding something they rarely encounter elsewhere on the circuit: a festival where the energy in the market mirrors the energy in theaters. As regional co-production models expand and the Cairo Film Connection strengthens the festival’s profile as a project incubator, Cairo is emerging as a key site not only for discovering new voices but also for understanding what matters to Arab filmmakers right now.

This year’s expanded Cairo Film Connection, held as part of Cairo Industry Days, signals the festival’s growing weight as a regional hub. With financing structures shifting across Middle East and North Africa and more funds opening conversations with local producers, programmers are watching how Cairo’s evolving market ecosystem could shape the films that eventually land in Europe and beyond. For filmmaker/writer-director Anas Sareen (“The Gods”), Berlinale Generation programmer and CIFF short-film juror, the opportunity lies in the next wave of filmmakers rising through these pipelines. “These structures push emerging filmmakers forward,” he notes, adding that what resonates most is meeting filmmakers “whose sincerity shows in the work.”

Céline Routan, director of programming at Palm Springs ShortFest and a NETPAC juror in Cairo, whose background includes programming roles within SXSW, IDFA and TIFF ShortCuts, views Cairo’s industry expansion as part of a broader regional realignment. The shift, she emphasizes, is not only financial. “It’s important for filmmakers to rely on partners from the region,” she explains. “When producers share the same context, the collaboration starts from a place of understanding.”

If the industry draws programmers in, it’s Cairo’s audience that defines the festival’s character. Both Sareen and Routan point to something that sets CIFF apart from Doha, Red Sea and other major regional festivals: a deeply invested local audience that fills screenings.

“Every seat is filled,” Routan notes. “You don’t come here to play to an empty room. Cairo audiences go to the movies, they react, they debate. It really matters to them.”

Watching films with an Egyptian audience, Routan adds, reveals narrative nuances that may not surface elsewhere. The ideal film, as she frames it, is authentic to its own world while still allowing international audiences a way in, not designed for Western gatekeepers but not shutting them out either.

Sareen, attending Cairo for the first time, feels the distinction begins with the city itself. “Cairo is cinema,” he reflects. “Everywhere you look feels like the beginning of a story.” The city’s cinematic lineage, from its foundational role in Arab filmmaking to figures like Youssef Chahine, continues to shape how programmers engage with the films presented today. Cairo’s longevity as the region’s oldest FIAPF-accredited festival, he adds, brings an institutional memory newer festivals can’t duplicate. “It has managed to position itself as a leading place over many years.”

That foundation now meets a generational shift. Routan points to a rise in films by women and Gen Z directors, reflecting changes in training, access and regional funding. More notable to her is a confidence among filmmakers telling stories intended first for local audiences rather than optimizing for international palatability. “More films are unapologetically themselves,” she notes.

Some of that confidence is already visible in this year’s lineup. Routan points to shorts like “First the Blush Then the Habit,” the kind of film she’s eyeing for Palm Springs, for its precision and strong sense of voice. On the feature side, she points to “Flana,” by Iraqi filmmaker Zahraa Ghandour, which has already screened in Toronto and IDFA, as part of a wave of well-crafted regional films moving fluidly between Arab and international festivals.

Sareen sees a parallel movement among diaspora filmmakers reconnecting with the region. Many, he observes, are returning with new perspectives shaped by displacement or migration. “There’s a generation trying to shed new light on our cultures,” he notes, pointing to an emerging pan-Arab filmmaking sensibility he finds particularly exciting.

Some themes, however, remain unavoidable. “It’s impossible not to talk about Palestine,” Sareen reflects. “It’s a responsibility filmmakers feel, and they’re proud to take it on.” Conflicts in Sudan and across the region carry similar weight. Politics, he emphasizes, is not a branding device for Arab cinema but a lived reality that inevitably informs the work. Yet filmmakers are equally intent on not being defined solely by it.

Short films often register these tensions most quickly. With their rapid production timeline, Routan views shorts as a sharper pulse of the moment: “They reflect the state of the world faster than features,” she emphasizes. But urgency alone doesn’t justify selection; the filmmaking must stand on its own.

Both programmers consider Cairo a genuine launchpad. Distributors watch how Egyptian audiences respond, and programmers use CIFF as a scouting ground for films that may later reach Palm Springs, Berlin, or other key festivals. “The industry is here,” Routan says. “Films can be picked up, and filmmakers can build connections that matter.”

Prabhas to Join Oscar-Winning Naatu Naatu Choreographer Prem Rakshith for a Film

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Filmfare has learnt that Prabhas, one of India’s biggest pan-India stars, is all set to join hands with Prem Rakshith, the Oscar-winning choreographer behind the global hit Naatu Naatu. According to an independent industry source, the two are coming together for a mass commercial project that is expected to be mounted on a grand scale.

The insider shared, “The undisputed Pan-India superstar Prabhas will collaborate with Oscar song-winning Naatu Naatu choreographer Prem Rakshith for a mass project. The film will be a spectacle like the world has never seen before. The team is gearing up for the mega announcement.”

Prabhas has become a household name across India and overseas ever since the Baahubali franchise shattered box office records. Over the years, he has built a massive fan base that cuts across languages, making him one of the most bankable names in Indian cinema. His films often open to huge numbers worldwide, and his collaborations naturally attract large-scale attention.
Prem Rakshith, on the other hand, made history when the RRR song Naatu Naatu won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023. The track became a global sensation for its energetic choreography and infectious rhythm. His success placed Indian dance and choreography on the world stage, earning him international acclaim.
The pairing of Prabhas and Prem Rakshith has already sparked excitement across the industry because both are known for creating moments that go beyond the screen. While details of the film remain under wraps, sources say the project aims to deliver unmatched visual style, high-energy sequences, and an experience designed for audiences across India.
The official announcement is expected soon, and fans are eagerly waiting to see what this rare combination of star power and creative excellence will bring to the big screen.
