Adler & Associates Buys Aneek Chaudhuri Doc On Patriarchy In Religion

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Adler & Associates Entertainment has acquired Aneek Chaudhuri’s feature documentary The Place Once Known as Earth and We, Homo Sapiens.

The film, from The Zebras director Chaudhuri, is billed as “a daring exploration of the intersection of religion, patriarchy, and gender oppression in India.” According to Chaudhuri, it “unearths how rituals, customs, and cultural double standards—often sanctified in the name of faith—perpetuate misogyny across generations.”

Arthouse director Chaudhuri has explored rural rituals and urban issues, with testimony from musicians, journalists, theatre practitioners, psychologists and citizens.

“The Place Once Known as Earth and We, Homo Sapiens is a mirror to a civilization where divine femininity is celebrated on pedestals while real women are condemned for the same natural cycles that make them human,” said Chaudhuri.

“We offer prayers to Durga, Kali, and Lakshmi with utmost devotion, yet in the same breath, we silence women at home, dismiss their ambitions, or even justify violence against them,” he added. “That hypocrisy fascinated me—how the sacred and the violent coexist without guilt.”

Though the film is focused on India, the film will draw parallels to other practises that could be considered misogynistic elsewhere in the world. Chaudhuri said that religion acts as the centerpiece, “not to vilify faith itself, but to examine how patriarchal structures manipulate its power.”

The Place Once Known as Earth and We, Homo Sapiens has played at festivals such as the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in Australia.

“Aneek’s film is not just about India; it’s puts humanity’s contradictions under the microscope,” said Mark Belasco, Executive Vice President at Adler & Associates. “By placing religion at the center, he exposes how systems of belief can both empower and oppress.

“Told with honesty, and a refusal to sanitize, Aneek’s style makes the documentary universally compelling. This is the kind of work that resonates far beyond its cultural origins. Besides, it’s been a long-term association with Aneek. This film hopes to be universal.”

“Cinema cannot dismantle patriarchy in one sweep, but it can disturb,” added Chaudhuri. “It can make you confront the contradictions you live with daily. That disturbance is the first step toward change.”

Chaudhuri recently launched Mono Studios Entertainment, a Kolkata-based production house that’s positioned as a “creative sanctuary for emerging directors.”

Suspect Identified in HBO’s ‘The Yogurt Shop Murders’ Doc Case

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Police named a dead man Friday as a new suspect in the 1991 unsolved killings of four teenage girls at an Austin yogurt shop, saying DNA evidence led to a “significant breakthrough” in the brutal crime that has haunted Texas’ capital and stumped investigators for decades.

In a statement, Austin police said DNA tests led investigators to Robert Eugene Brashers, who died by suicide in 1999 during a standoff with law enforcement. He has since then been linked to several killings and rape in other states.

The announcement came amid renewed attention on the case with the release last month of The Yogurt Shop Murders, an HBO documentary series. Police said the case remains open and scheduled a Monday news conference to detail their findings.

The murders stunned Texas’ capital city and became known as one of the area’s most notorious crimes. Austin police investigators and prosecutors had stumbled over the case for years as they waded through thousands of leads, several false confessions and badly damaged evidence from the burned-out crime scene.

“Our team never gave up working this case,” Austin police said.

Amy Ayers, 13; Eliza Thomas, 17; and sisters Jennifer and Sarah Harbison, ages 17 and 15, were bound, gagged and shot in the head at the “I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt” store where two of them worked. The building was then set on fire.

Investigators have said that around closing time, someone entered the store through the back door, attacked the girls and set the fire. The bodies were found when firefighters were still battling the blaze.

The autopsy report offered glimpses of the lives of teenage sisters and friends: Ayers wore small, white earrings. Sarah Harbison was wearing a gold necklace and a Mickey Mouse watch. Jennifer Harbison wore a high school ring and a Timex watch.

It also suggested the horror: their hands were tied with underwear and mouths were gagged with cloth. Ayers was shot twice.

In 1999, authorities arrested four men on murder charges. Two of them, Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott, were teenagers at the time of the murders. They initially confessed and implicated each other. But both men quickly recanted and said their statements were made under pressure by police.

Still both were tried and convicted. Initially Springsteen was sent to death row, but his sentence was then reduced to life in prison.

Their convictions were overturned and they were set for retrial a decade later.

A judge ordered both men freed in 2009 when prosecutors said new DNA tests that weren’t available in 1991 had revealed another male suspect.

In 2018, Missouri authorities said DNA evidenced linked Brashers to the strangulation of a South Carolina woman in 1990, and the shooting of a mother and daughter in Missouri in 1998. The evidence also connected him to the 1997 rape of a 14-year-old girl in Tennessee.

Brashers died in 1999 when he shot himself during an hours-long standoff with police at a motel in Kennett, Missouri.

“They don’t want the public to see what’s really going on on the inside…” HBO Max has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled The Alabama Solution, an extraordinary inside look at the problems within the American prison system. This film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and also played at Sheffield DocFest. Made by acclaimed doc filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, it is ready to view on HBO Max in October. Composed primarily of contraband cell phone footage taken by incarcerated men at Easterling and other facilities across the state, The Alabama Solution film exposes the inhumane conditions, systemic injustice, and brutal treatment of those behind bars in the Alabama prison system told through their own voices and their own stories. The film expertly weaves the pressing issues of prison privatization, inmate slave labor, abuse of power, government corruption, and extreme violence together to help audiences on the outside get a real sense of the abhorrent conditions of our fellow human beings. Looks very hard to watch – but still an important, necessary, vital example of reporting on the truth even when it’s so extremely rotten.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Andrew Jarecki’s doc The Alabama Solution, from YouTube:

The Alabama Solution Doc Poster

In 2019, filmmakers visit an Alabama prison to film a revival meeting. Off camera, incarcerated men whisper a message: terrible things are going on here & being kept secret. This sparks an immersive six-year investigation to discover the reality behind the walls of one of the nation’s deadliest prison systems. Through unprecedented direct access and video shot on contraband cell phones, the filmmakers learn from the men inside about a suspicious and violent death. The story unfolds in real time, revealing it isn’t an isolated incident and that the official version appears far from the truth. What follows is a shocking story of brutality, corruption, and a system in collapse. As the men fight for their own survival, they embark on a campaign of resistance, against all odds. The Alabama Solution is a doc film directed by the filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, director of the doc Capturing the Friedmans, the film All Good Things, and the entire “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” series. Produced by Charlotte Kaufman & Andrew Jarecki. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. HBO will debut Jarecki’s The Alabama Solution doc streaming on HBO Max starting October 10th, 2025 coming up soon. Intrigued?

“Do I remember the future?” Rich Spirit has just unveiled the first look teaser trailer for an acclaimed new documentary film titled BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions, created by filmmaker Kahlil Joseph. This first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and has been playing everywhere else including Berlinale, NYFF, TIFF, Vanoucver, London, and IDFA. It’s more of a video essay than a doc with a narrative – taking viewers on a profound visual / intellectual journey through Black history and beyond. “A film and filmmaker that refuses to be contained.” Kahlil Joseph’s BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions rewires history, memory, and sound into a cinematic experience unlike anything else. Adapted from his seminal video art installation, the film interweaves fictional and historical characters in an immersive story that spans 247 years across land and sea – inspired by the entirety of the “Africana” encyclopedia book in this teaser. In its mix of fictional & documentary forms, the film is inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Saidiya Hartman, and others thinkers, juxtaposing their ideas with archive material & images. This film is a must watch for cinema nerds.

Here’s the first look teaser trailer for Kahlil Joseph’s doc BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions, on YouTube:

BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions Teaser Trailer

Original intro via TIFF: “Celebrated artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph revisits and expands upon his eponymous two-channel ‘fugitive newscast’ installation that was showcased at the 2019 Venice Biennale among other prestigious venues, in this galvanizing, shape-shifting exploration of Black history, identity, and possibility. Joseph enlisted several prominent Black scholars and thinkers to co-write the film in an act of collective fabulation. Formally audacious and conceived as a cinematic experience that mirrors the sonic textures of an album, the film fluidly moves between modes, creating its own free-associative logic that mixes personal memoir, speculative narrative, archival footage, social media samples, and citations of work by other great artists.” BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions is directed by the artist / filmmaker Kahlil Joseph, making his feature directorial debut after many short films & other video projects. It’s produced by Onye Anyanwu, Kahlil Joseph, Amy Greenleaf, Nic Gonda. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Presented by Rich Spirit. Kahlil Joseph’s BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions doc film will open in select US theaters this November 2025. Stay tuned for more updates. Anyone intrigued?

Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, More Cancel ‘Lilith Fair’ Doc Performances

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Artists — including Sarah McLachlan and Jewel — scheduled to take the stage at the Los Angeles premiere of the new documentary Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery canceled their performances on Sunday in a move to stand for free speech. The film about the historic Nineties festival is being distributed by ABC New Studio, whose parent company Disney continues to deal with the fallout over its decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel for his comments on Charlie Kirk’s death.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, invitations to the premiere promised “special surprise performances.” Sources revealed to THR that McLachlan and Jewel were set to perform. Puck‘s Matt Belloni also reported that Olivia Rodrigo, who appears in the documentary as well, was meant to be a surprise guest.

McLachlan introduced the film and confirmed that the performances were canceled due to Kimmel’s controversial suspension.

“It’s a gift for all of us to see [this film], but also I’ve grappled with being here tonight and around what to say about the present situation that we are all faced with, the stark contraction to the many advances we’ve made watching the insidious erosion of women’s rights, of trans and queer rights, the muzzling of free speech,” McLachlan said. “I think we’re all fearful for what comes next, and none of us know, but what I do know is that I have to keep pushing forward as an artist, as a woman to find a way through, and though I don’t begin to know what the answer is, I believe we all need to work towards a softening to let in the possibility of a better way, because I see music as a bridge to our shared humanity, to finding common ground.”

She continued: “If Lilith taught me anything, it taught me there is a great strength in coming together to lift each other up instead of tearing each other down. So I really hope this documentary inspires everyone to continue to try and create positive change in your communities, to keep lifting each other up, keep championing the causes you believe in with kindness and empathy because ultimately, we’re all in this together.”

As she wrapped up her remarks, she further explained why there would be no performances at the event. “I know you’re expecting a performance tonight, and I’m so grateful to all of you for coming, and I apologize if this is disappointing, but we have collectively decided not to perform but instead to stand in solidarity in support of free speech,” McLachlan said. “Thank you for your understanding.”

McLachlan joins many artists who have stood in solidarity with Kimmel, show was taken off air after station owners Nexstar and Sinclair said they wouldn’t air his show in the wake of his comments. Many have accused Disney of bowing to pressure from the Trump administration and suppressing freedom of speech. Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been suspended indefinitely.

Lilith Fair Doc Red Carpet Canceled Amid Kimmel Controversy

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

As Disney contends with a major controversy involving its suspension of Jimmy Kimmel, its ABC News Studios division has canceled a red carpet for today’s premiere of its documentary Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery – The Untold Story.

ABC News Studios informed the press of the red carpet cancellation via email on Saturday night, a day before the event. “Please note this event will no longer be hosting a red carpet,” the email reads, per Variety. “We appreciate your willingness to attend and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

That message also came just 24 hours after a confirmation email told reporters and photographers that Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, and Mýa would be walking the red carpet. The Ford in Hollywood will still host a premiere screening and surprise performances, according to the report.

ABC News Studios didn’t explain the red carpet cancellation, Variety adds, but the switch-up comes after days of outcry over ABC taking Jimmy Kimmel Live! off air over Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk.

Amid mass outrage over the network’s silencing of Kimmel, social media users — including celebrities — are urging others to boycott Disney by canceling their Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN subscriptions. Tatiana Maslany, Misha Collins, and Wil Wheaton all promoted the subscription boycott, USA Today reports.

In unlucky timing for the Lilith Fair team, the documentary, directed by Ally Pankiw, premieres in the United States today on Hulu. The documentary draws from new interviews and 600 hours of footage to “[tell] the history of the groundbreaking music festival featuring only women artists, started by iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan and her team in the late 1990s, in opposition to systematic industry barriers that limited women from playing together on a concert bill and getting back-to-back airplay on the radio.”

Aside from McLachlan, Jewel, and Mýa, original Lilith Fair artists Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Paula Cole, Natalie Merchant, Emmylou Harris, and the Indigo Girls are interviewed in the documentary, as well as Brandi Carlile and Olivia Rodrigo.

Paramount+'s Ozzy Osbourne Doc Arriving Oct. 7

Paramount+’s Ozzy Osbourne Doc Arriving Oct. 7

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Ozzy Osbourne and his family pull back the curtain on the final years of his life in the Paramount+ documentary OZZY: NO ESCAPE FROM NOW, the first trailer for which is out now. The Tania Alexander-directed film will be released Oct. 7, less than three months after Osbourne’s death at the age of 76.

“The thing about getting old — I used to take pills for fun. Now I take them to stay alive,” Osbourne says in the trailer for the doc, which spotlights his struggles with significant health problems and his efforts to get back into the recording studio and onto the live stage.

Alexander began work on the documentary in early 2022 while Osbourne was making his Grammy-winning album Patient Number 9 with producer Andrew Watt. She also captured the lead-up to Osbourne’s final solo and Black Sabbath performances on July 5 in his hometown of Birmingham, England, which featured an array of the biggest names in hard rock and metal.

NO ESCAPE FROM NOW is loaded with appearances from Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan and Slash, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and longtime Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, among many others.

“This film is an honest account of what has happened to Ozzy during the last few years,” his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne said previously. “It shows how hard things have been for him and the courage he has shown while dealing with a number of serious health issues, including Parkinson’s. It’s about the reality of his life now. We have worked with a production team we trust and have allowed them the freedom to tell the story openly. We hope that story will inspire people that are facing similar issues to Ozzy.”

Also arriving on Oct. 7 is Osbourne’s second memoir, Last Rites, which will be released by Grand Central Publishing/Hachette Book Group.
