“Jim may be the funniest human I know.” 🤣 Peacock has debuted the trailer for a streaming documentary special titled Downey Wrote That, as part of their ongoing “Saturday Night Live” celebrations. The hour-long doc explores the sketches, contributions and influence of Jim Downey – SNL’s longest-running writer who coined “strategery” mocking President George W. Bush and was once called the “best political humorist alive.” While diving into the storied history of TV’s most iconic & longest-running comedy institution, this will uncover the mastery of Downey’s craft as the show’s behind-the-scenes comedic architect for over three decades. Largely unseen by audiences, Jim is the prolific writer behind many of SNL’s most unforgettable sketches, quotable lines and groundbreaking political satire. This doc features interviews with tons of SNL regulars including Fred Armisen, Dana Carvey, Will Forte, Al Franken, Bill Hader, Darrell Hammond, David Letterman, Jon Lovitz, Seth Meyers, Lorne Michaels, and many more. This looks like a delightfully upbeat & worthy tribute to one of the great comedy writers. We never see them, but they still deserves all the acclaim.

Here’s the official trailer for Brent Hodge’s doc Downey Wrote That, direct from Peacock’s YouTube:

“The closest fans can get without being arrested.” Get ready for another spectacular concert experience! IMAX is re-releasing one of their original IMAX concert docs again on the big screen in theaters December. First released in 1991, Rolling Stones – At the Max is the first and only concert feature shot with IMAX cameras. “At the Max was always about bringing fans as close as possible to the energy of our live shows. With IMAX, that experience is bigger, louder, and more immersive than ever—we can’t wait for audiences to feel it all over again.” –The Rolling Stones. The film, which has not been in theaters since 2007, has already made $17 million worldwide before. Packed with career-defining performances of iconic hits including “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Brown Sugar,” “Start Me Up,” and more, the film puts audiences at the heart of the crowd, where every moment is enhanced by IMAX’s unmatched scale and sound. Starring Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, and Bill Wyman. While it’s a common occurrence nowadays, it’s actually pretty cool to think about this being the very first concert doc they shot with actual IMAX film cameras and IMAX film stock (it was a big thing in the 90s – often screening at science museums). And now it’ll be even bigger & louder than ever! Go rock out with the Rolling Stones again in theaters this December.

Filmed during the band’s 1990 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour, Rolling Stones – At the Max was shot across five concerts in three European cities using eight IMAX film cameras. The result was the first-ever feature-length IMAX concert film, showcasing the incomparable talents of the Rolling Stones and their stadium-filling power. First released in 1991, the critically acclaimed film is the first and only concert feature shot with IMAX film cameras. Starring Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, and Bill Wyman, the film has been newly remastered with IMAX’s proprietary Digital Media Remastering (DMR) technology and features a brand-new sound mix—delivering the most immersive and electrifying presentation of this legendary performance to date. Rolling Stones – At the Max is a live concert doc co-directed by the filmmakers Noel Archambault, David Douglas, Roman Kroitor, and Julien Temple. Executive produced by André Picard and Michael Cohl. The IMAX movie was originally released in theaters in June 1992, and was also re-released again in 2007. IMAX will re-release Rolling Stones – At the Max remastered in IMAX theaters worldwide starting on December 10th, 2025 later this year. Want to watch?

‘Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud’ Doc Trailer

Source: YouTube

“The way you hold that camera, you’re doing it from your heart.” HBO Max has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud, made by his brother Craig Renaud. This first premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year – where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary. It’ll be streaming on HBO Max later this October. Armed Only With a Camera is a powerful tribute to a war photojournalist who risked everything on the front lines. On March 13th, 2022, doc filmmaker Brent Renaud was killed by Russian soldiers – the first American journalist to die while reporting on the war in Ukraine. His younger brother & collaborator, Craig Renaud, recovered Brent’s body and his final recordings from Ukraine and brought them back home to Arkansas. As Brent’s journey to his final resting place unfolds, the doc film chronicles the years he and his brother spent covering some of the world’s most dangerous conflicts as photojournalists. Brent’s journey home also serves as a window into what drove him as a journalist, and how he viewed the world through his lens. This film is dedicated to Brent and all journalists who use cameras to fight for peace. They’re more important than ever.

Armed Only With A Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud Trailer

Armed Only With A Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud Poster

The vérité film includes harrowing footage of the brothers’ reporting from around the globe, including time embedded with the Arkansas National Guard in Iraq, the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the war in Somalia, immigrants’ journeying from Honduras to the United States, and Brent’s reportage upon arriving in Ukraine. Despite bearing witness to devastating loss & suffering, he fearlessly covered stories from the front lines, while empathically capturing the impact on innocent people. Unflinching in its depiction of death, loss, and the toll of war, the film is Brent’s ultimate testament to the critical value of wartime reporting & tribute to journalists providing on-the-ground, life-threatening coverage of world events. As journalism is becoming one of the most dangerous professions, Armed Only With a Camera is dedicated to Brent & all devoted journalists who use their cameras to work for truth & understanding.

Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud is directed by the brothers Craig Renaud & Brent Renaud (posthumously) as a “Renaud Brothers Film”. They’re also co-directors of the films Warrior Champions, Shelter, Meth Storm, and other TV series and many doc projects previously. Produced by Juan Arredondo, Craig Renaud & Brent Renaud; in association with DCTV. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. HBO Docs will release Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud streaming on HBO Max starting on October 21st, 2025 this fall. Anyone want to watch it?

Rebecca Miller’s Apple TV+ Martin Scorsese Doc

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

An early montage in Rebecca Miller‘s montage-heavy five-part documentary on Martin Scorsese focuses on the ways that friends, loved ones and collaborators address the Oscar-winning director.

There are several “Martys” among the ultra-familiar, a lot of “Martins” among the respectfully familiar, and a few “Mr. Scorseses” among the familiar but deferential. (“Martin Scorsese” would be reserved for the respectfully distant and, of course, “Scorsese – Monster: The Martin Scorsese Story” for Ryan Murphy.)

Mr. Scorsese

The Bottom Line

Conventional but utterly engaging.

Venue: New York Film Festival (Spotlight)
Airdate: Friday, October 17 (Apple TV+)
Director: Rebecca Miller

Miller’s docuseries is titled Mr. Scorsese and that encapsulates her approach as well: This overview of Scorsese’s career is thorough, peppered with warmth and affection, but perhaps just a shade more conventional and, yes, deferential, than the subject matter might ideally require. Especially in its second half, Mr. Scorsese becomes a little bit of a laundry list, and its attempts to tie together aspects of Scorsese’s career feel a little rushed. But the series has enough wonky inside-baseball film conversation for serious fans — in its best moments, it could nearly be called Ms. Schoonmaker — and enough clips and colorful stories to inspire casual observers to seek out a couple more semi-obscure Scorsese titles.

Scorsese’s life and work, still ongoing thank heavens, have been given a rather simple five-act structure for purposes of the documentary. Miller starts with Scorsese’s early biography and his evolution from aspiring priest to student filmmaker to first-time feature director on the Roger Corman-produced Boxcar Bertha. Then it’s over to Mean Streets, Scorsese’s early Robert De Niro collaborations, cocaine and over-exertion. Then more cocaine, plus Raging Bull and the director’s mid-80s wandering in the cinematic desert. Then the series concludes with Last Temptation of Christ and Goodfellas, followed by the Leonardo DiCaprio years, resolving with pre-production on Killers of the Flower Moon.

For the most part, Miller has access to all of the people you need to tell Scorsese’s story — starting with Scorsese, who clearly sat for a lot of in-depth interviews in a variety of locations, including what appears to be a waterside vacation house; a cluttered urban office; and, best of all, several darkly lit restaurants, where he gets to gab with friends from childhood as they remember their rough-and-tumble upbringing with a mixture of candor and nostalgic romanticization. Miller sits down with all three of Scorsese’s daughters, ex-wife Isabella Rossellini, peers like Brian De Palma and Steven Spielberg, stars such as De Niro and DiCaprio (along with the likes of Miller’s husband Daniel Day-Lewis, Margot Robbie and Sharon Stone), and an assortment of regular collaborators, with longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker and writing partners like Paul Schrader and Jay Cocks among key behind-the-scenes figures.

Rounding out the documentary are younger directors following to varying degrees in Scorsese’s footsteps, like Spike Lee, Ari Aster and both Safdie brothers. Journalist/film scholar Mark Harris pops up late in the series to smooth some intellectual transitions. These relative outsiders offer some insight, but rarely feel as seamlessly integrated into Miller’s story as the people who were there.

The first two episodes, which lay the foundation for all of Scorsese’s fixations and themes, were my favorites, with Scorsese and his assortment of matured tough-guy pals steering anecdotes interspersed with storyboards drawn by a young Scorsese and footage from his acclaimed student films. Miller is never formally adventurous, though some of the art/artist parallels are illustrated in thoughtful split-screens. From the violence he witnessed in the streets to the escape offered by secure and air-conditioned movie theaters to the moral inquiry prompted by his immersion in Catholicism, this is Scorsese in a nutshell, delivered with the director’s trademark volubility that remains delightful even if most of the background was conveyed in documentaries like Italianamerican and A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies.

Martin Scorsese has always been an open book, a storyteller who has offered his autobiography freely and an auteur whose deepest philosophical themes have been recurring and explored in bold type. That he’s never been an “Oh, I’d prefer to let the work speak for itself” recluse is to Miller’s advantage. But she has to push to get different or deeper engagement, leaving many of her questions and conversational detours audible.

Given that it could easily have become oversaturated with testosterone, it’s obvious that Mr. Scorsese benefits from being made by a director who isn’t simply a giddy fanboy. It’s in moments like Miller’s inquiry about the use of hands as a motif in The Age of Innocence that you can see Scorsese relax and embrace a topic that isn’t the usual gabbing about violence and Catholic guilt and whether or not he can be classified as a gangster filmmaker — not that those topics are excluded.

Nothing is exactly off-limits, but one can sense Scorsese trying to de-sensationalize his drug use or the work-related obsessiveness that led to his many divorces so thoroughly that there’s nothing for Miller to dwell on. This makes the version of Scorsese’s life presented here follow a very familiar “Rise, slight fall, rise again” arc, along with a “Sexagenarian or septuagenarian gets another chance at fatherhood and corrects the mistakes he made the first time, much to his older children’s resignation/chagrin” formula that has become so common for documentaries about men of a certain age.

Scorsese’s big movies get the most extensive focus, and the truth is I could happily watch five hours of Scorsese and Schoonmaker breaking down tape on Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Mean Streets. But it’s often just as interesting when Scorsese goes somewhat deep on a less expected film, like the long-term dream project Gangs of New York, or a less universally adored project like Casino.

Miller is so eager to at least touch on everything on Scorsese’s resumé that the few gaps stick out. I’m pretty sure, for example, that Scorsese’s only scripted feature not to get even a token mention is Hugo. Do I need a deep exploration of Hugo? Nah, but Scorsese’s ability to adapt to and evolve with cinematic technology is a big part of his venerability. Do I need deep dives into Boardwalk Empire or Vinyl? Probably not, but those HBO dramas, one a reasonably large success and the other a large failure, represent a not-insignificant portion of Scorsese’s output from the past 15 years.

I’m also a bigger fan of Scorsese’s documentary work than Miller seems to be. While The Last Waltz gets ample attention, it’s odd that Mick Jagger is in the documentary for basically one quote about the way music is used in Casino, without mentioning the Rolling Stones concert film Shine a Light.

Again, though, what’s missing in Mr. Scorsese stands out because so much is present, and present in such solidly rendered ways. Scorsese is an always entertaining raconteur; the footage and outtakes from his films fuel an instant desire for a career retrospective binge; and his daughters (especially Francesca, whose social media posts with her dad have often gone viral) round out the character portrait beyond his normally fast-talking, excitedly curmudgeonly persona. I never wanted anything different, just slightly more, from the docuseries.

Vets PTSD Doc Makes Case for Psychedelics

Vets PTSD Doc Makes Case for Psychedelics

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Editor’s Note: “In Waves and War” originally debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in 2024. It opens at the Laemmle Monica in Los Angeles on Friday, October 3, 2025 before a Netflix debut on November 3.

Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen‘s at times emotionally overwhelming documentary gets its title via a quote from “The Odyssey” that opens the film.

“By now, I am used to suffering. I have endured so much in waves and war. Let this next adventure follow.”

The Navy SEALs who are the subjects of “In Waves and War” aren’t just used to suffering. Many long thought that bearing the emotional cost of suffering was their only option. Multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq over years left unseen scars as wall as visible ones, and PTSD can be so intractable an enemy, despite multiple therapies and prescription drugs, that a lot are left to think that just “bearing it” is all they can do.

Tilly Norwood, a creation of AI studio Xicoia

Shenk and Cohen‘s film makes a powerful case that there may be another option: Psychedelic drugs, not approved for use in the U.S., may help break through these vets’ psychological barriers and offer a reset. It makes the case so forcefully that there are moments “In Waves and War” almost feels like a commercial: No downside to these drugs, ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT, is mentioned other than that they may help “crack you open” and face your unresolved traumas and guilt and grief directly — and then it’s up to you lay a new foundation to live a different way after treatment, or you might revert to the way you were before. It’s unclear in the film just how advisable this treatment — which usually involves vets traveling to a clinic in Mexico to receive it — is for everyone. And maybe it isn’t for everyone. But the key is that it offers hope.

The SEALs we meet in “In Waves and War” had each reached a point where they’d given up on hope. Their stories of their years and years fighting overseas, being away from their families for 300+ days a year, and witnessing unspeakable horrors, makes up the spine of the film. These are riveting stories. There’s Marcus Capone, described a couple times as looking like an NFL linebacker, but whose wife says had become “a monster” upon his return from multiple tours of duty. He becomes the leading evangelist for psychedelic treatments for veterans through his foundation VETS (Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions), and is a producer on the film. D.J. Shipley movingly talks about how he met his wife, Patsy, who had been widowed in her early 20s when her first husband, Danny Dietz, was killed in 2005 in the Operation Red Wings crash in Afghanistan. Shipley wanted to visit Dietz’s grave to “ask him permission” to court Patsy. But by the end of almost 20 years in the SEALs, he had nearly wrecked the life he had built with her.

And finally, there’s Matty Roberts, whose journey to Mexico to receive his first treatment is captured in “In Waves and War.” Matty suffered a major wound in his arm during one firefight and was convinced, initially, that his arm had been blown off altogether. With animations from London-based commercial animation company Studio AKA, each of these vets’ traumas come to life. The animation style is fluid and boundary-less, images just made out as they morph into something else: A helicopter hovering over a dusty landscape; a row of SEALs in nightvision goggles approaching a target; fire exchanged over a tractor tire. The images are as hazy as memory, and a very effective way of getting inside the heads of these vets — who otherwise tell their stories direct-to-camera, and are never less than compelling in doing so.

The animation particularly hammers home the individualized experiences of going through the psychedelic treatment: For Marcus, it felt like he was flying through a void with memories from his life floating like a swirl of Polaroids around him; for Matty, he ended up face to face staring down a version of himself, as if learning to confront and let go of his own ego.

It’s all very meaningful to watch and never less than engaging, even if “In Waves and War” comes across like a pharmaceutical infomercial at times as much as a film. Fundamentally, Shenk and Cohen are trying to argue for a particular solution here, and it might be promising indeed, but it’s also presented as a little too much of a silver-bullet for the issues they’ve identified. A truer, more valuable review of “In Waves and War” is one that hopefully will be written in a medical journal rather than IndieWire. At least it offers hope to these American heroes that there can be more to life than “being used to suffering.”

Grade: B-

“In Waves and War” world premiered at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival. It opens at the Laemmle Monica in Los Angeles on Friday, October 3, 2025 before a Netflix debut on November 3.

Official Trailer for ‘Who Killed the Montreal Expos?’ Sports History Doc

“Who lost it all?” Netflix has unveiled a trailer for a documentary film titled Who Killed the Montreal Expos?, a sports history look back at a beloved baseball team. The Montreal Expos were the very first MLB team in Canada playing for 3 long decades. After the 2004 season, the franchise moved to Washington, D.C., and became the Washington Nationals. 20 years after they lost its beloved Expos, fans still want answers. Who Killed the Montreal Expos? takes a behind-the-scenes look at the controversial decisions, setbacks, and missteps (and betrayal?!) that sealed the team’s fate. Through candid interviews with Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and Larry Walker, along with beloved manager Felipe Alou, journalists, former employees, and diehard fans who lived through it all, the doc film investigates the behind-the-scenes controversies, devastating setbacks, and critical missteps that led to the shocking loss of one of the game’s most cherished franchises. With rare archival footage & flashbacks of the Expos’ greatest moments, the doc is equal parts sports drama, cultural love story, and gripping whodunit, unraveling the enduring mystery of how it all came to an end. This trailer plays like a crime thriller not a nostalgic look back at a team! Intense.

Who Killed the Montreal Expos? Doc Poster

On September 29th, 2004, the Montreal Expos played their final home game before a grieving crowd at Olympic Stadium. For 35 years, the Expos had been more than a ballclub. They were the first MLB team to call Canada home and became part of Montreal’s heartbeat, a symbol of pride and identity for Québécois. Generations grew up with the Expos, celebrating triumphs & enduring struggles. That final game marked the end of an era, and for many, the loss of a piece of themselves. Two decades later, the heartbreak still remains, and the same question haunts the city that once dreamed in Expos blue: who’s to blame for the loss of our team? Featuring rare archival footage and flashbacks of the Expos’ greatest moments, the doc is equal parts sports drama, cultural love story, and gripping whodunit, unraveling the enduring mystery of how it all came to an end. Who Killed the Montreal Expos? is directed by Quebecois filmmaker Jean-François Poisson, of the doc films Marie-Soleil et Jean-Claude: Au-delà des étoiles, 35 jours de noirceur, Dédé et Patrick: au-delà des étoiles, and Gai(e) tu ne seras point, plus many other short films. Produced by Stéphanie Thibault. Exec produced by Richard Speer, Marie-Christine Pouliot, & Nick Trotta. Netflix debuts Who Killed the Montreal Expos? streaming on Netflix worldwide starting on October 21st, 2025 this fall.
