“Believe in a little bit of magic.” HBO has revealed an official trailer for another fascinating new Music Box documentary film titled Happy And You Know It, the latest mesmerizing cinematic creation from the wonderful doc filmmaker Penny Lane. Subverting the notion that making music for children is easy and proving that love, imagination, and emotional truth are the foundations of songs that resonate, Happy And You Know It reminds us of the magical way music connects us across generations and to the child inside us all. The doc dives into the surprisingly powerful world of children’s music, uncovering origin stories of the artists who shaped the genre. It chronicles the unexpected paths musicians take to embrace the creative freedom found in writing music that shapes childhoods. Featuring conversations with talented musicians like Anthony Field of “The Wiggles”, Chris Ballew, Divinity Roxx, Laurie Berkner, Johnny Only, and many others. I’m a big fan of Penny Lane’s other Music Box doc Listening to Kenny G and this one looks just as good. I’m glad Penny tells this story in such a bright, beautiful, uplifting way – it is definitely worth a watch.

Here’s the full official trailer (+ poster) for Penny Lane’s doc Happy And You Know It, from YouTube:

Happy And You Know It Poster

Children’s music is terminally uncool to adults and dismissed by music critics, yet adored by kids. Music Box: Happy And You Know It explores the underestimated & wildly popular genre, delving behind the scenes to tell the origin stories of some of the top names in the field. It also traces the evolution of this prolific business and how advancements in technology and AI are reshaping and turbo-charging this genre. Featuring a colorful and charming cast and their toe-tapping songs, the film reframes children’s music as a misunderstood yet vital cultural artform that influences how kids develop. Happy And You Know It is directed by by acclaimed American doc filmmaker Penny Lane, director of many other doc films including Our Nixon, Nuts!, The Pain of Others, Hail Satan?, Listening to Kenny G, and Confessions of a Good Samaritan previously, plus many other short films. Produced by Gabriel Sedgwick and Julia Lewis. Another installment in the “Music Box” series on HBO created by Bill Simmons. Executive produced by Bill Simmons, Jody Gerson, Marc Cimino. HBO will debut Penny Lane’s Happy And You Know It doc streaming on HBO Max starting on December 25th, 2025 on Christmas Day at the end of this year. Want to watch?

“Look, it’s our time. Listen to us now.” HBO has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film called Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, arriving for streaming to watch starting this December. It’s one of the next offerings in HBO’s ongoing Music Box doc series, which debuted on HBO back in 2021, a collection of documentary films exploring pivotal moments in the music world. “A symbol of hope in Nigeria.” 🇳🇬 Wizkid: Long Live Lagos explores how art and music have the power to change global perception and awareness through the story of Nigerian superstar Wizkid (real name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun) as he prepares for his groundbreaking performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England (his show in 2023). One of the most successful African musicians of all time, Wizkid’s talent & authenticity transcend borders and brings African music to the world stage, challenging the stereotypes in Western media and reclaiming African identity. The doc features appearances by Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, Jada Pollock, Julie Adenuga, Seni Saraki, Starboy, Karen Binns, and Tops, his tour manager. Worth a watch if you’re a Wizkid fan – or not yet.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for HBO Music Box’s doc Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, from YouTube:

Wizkid: Long Live Lagos Poster

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Wizkid rose from his humble beginnings to become an influential, internationally recognized Grammy-winning musician. With no music industry infrastructure in Nigeria, he was fueled by raw talent, determination, and his belief that success would not only change his and his family’s lives, but also the global perception of Nigeria and the continent of Africa. Wizkid’s story takes us across Africa & London, meeting fans & friends who support him, and exploring the extensive, complex history between the United Kingdom and Nigeria and the aftermath of its colonial past. While the internet and streaming platforms enable world music to smash through borders, Wizkid also uses his voice to challenge colonial legacies, and shift the narrative to offer a fuller picture of present-day Africa and its cultural influence. As the first African artist to headline Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wizkid’s stardom underscores how global recognition is a form of rebellion, a key way to amplify and honor both African culture and African pride.

Wizkid: Long Live Lagos is directed by producer / filmmaker filmmaker Karam Gill, director of the films G-Funk, Ice Cold, and Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby. Produced by Karam Gill and Daniel Malikyar. Part of the Music Box series for HBO. Executive produced by Bill Simmons, Jody Gerson, Marc Cimino, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, Tina Nguyen This initially premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. HBO will debut Wizkid: Long Live Lagos streaming on HBO Max starting on December 11th, 2025.

“How bad can it be?” “Nobody’s going to hear it other than people in Chicago, right?” 🏈 And the rest is history. Does anyone remember this? Do the Super Bowl Shuffle! And win some big time games! Ha. HBO has revealed the official trailer for a short documentary film called The Shuffle, a sports history doc as one of their latest offerings during the NFL football season this fall. This looks like good fun. The short film explores the making of the 1985 Chicago Bears’ iconic “Super Bowl Shuffle” rap video (which you can also see below), featuring rare footage and new player interviews, showing how this Grammy-nominated hit captivated Chicago and football fans during their championship season. Featuring appearances by former Chicago Bears players Willie Gault, Mike Singletary, Jim McMahon, and Gary Fencik. The Shuffle is ready to stream during Thanksgiving later this month – for primetime football season. The documentary is the first in a new series of short football films, made in partnership with NFL Films, and will debut in advance of the new season of “Hard Knocks: In Season with the NFC East.” This seems like a hilarious blast from the past.

Here’s the official trailer for HBO’s sports history short doc film The Shuffle, direct from YouTube:

The Shuffle Doc Trailer

The Shuffle Doc Trailer

The Shuffle chronicles the making of the 1985 Chicago Bears’ iconic rap music video that became a cultural phenomenon enroute to the team’s storied Super Bowl XX championship. Featuring behind-the-scenes footage & new interviews with the star players who performed the song, the film explores the conception, execution, and impact of the Grammy-nominated track that energized the city of Chicago and football fans everywhere 40 years ago. Conceived by the Chicago-based record label executive Dick Meyer of Red Label Records, the song sparked debate over swagger versus superstition, as it was recorded weeks before the Bears had officially secured their spot in the Super Bowl. Ultimately, it was the bravado of the legendary team & everyone involved in the making of the song that marked a major turning point in the relationship between sports, music, and pop culture. The Shuffle is a short film directed by producer / filmmaker Jeff Cameron, also director of The Way Up – Chris Long & the Waterboys doc previously. Executive produced by Ross Ketover, Keith Cossrow, Ken Rodgers, Jessica Boddy, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, Bentley Weiner. HBO will debut The Shuffle streaming on HBO Max starting November 25th, 2025 this fall. Who’s down?

“Every single man here deserves the hope of becoming someone better.” An impressive festival trailer has debuted online for a documentary film titled Beyond, made by directors Asia Johnson & Michael Kleiman. This is premiering coming up this weekend at the 2025 DOC NYC Film Festival in the city. It’s a refreshing follow-up to the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film Sing Sing from a few years ago, and it is also executive produced by Clarence Maclin, who starred in that film as “Divine Eye”. Beyond tells the story of a group of men at Sing Sing prison (in NY State), as they organize and prepare for a TED Talk-style event, featuring personal narratives & ideas for changing the prison system. Powerful, heartbreaking, ultimately uplifting, the doc follows a group of incarcerated men as they get ready for their event called “Beyond the Block” (watch all the videos here). From filmmakers Asia Johnson (who was previously incarcerated) and Michael Kleinman, this film Beyond is a very timely examination of the myriad issues within the American prison industrial complex & the ways in which progress is slowly being made from the inside out. This looks good.

Here’s the first look trailer for Asia Johnson & Michael Kleiman’s doc film Beyond, direct from YouTube:

Intro via DOC NYC: “The men behind the prison walls of Sing Sing Correctional Facility find a much-needed outlet in Beyond the Block, a TED-style public speaking symposium. Conceived and developed by an incarcerated planning committee, the event allows participants to explore their humanity in otherwise adverse circumstances. Beyond follows the presenters, from auditions to triumphant moments on stage, as they express their truths in front of an audience of policy-makers, prison officials, and loved ones.” Beyond is a documentary film produced and directed by filmmakers Asia Johnson (making her first feature film after many other shorts) & Michael Kleiman (director of The Last Survivor, Web previously). Executive produced by Clarence Maclin & JJ Velazquez. This is premiering at the 2025 DOC NYC Film Festival – for tickets to screenings, visit docnyc.net. “It matters who pressed the shutter.” Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled The Stringer: The Man Who Took The Photo, which first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film is a fascinating deep-dive investigation in who exactly deserves the credit for taking a famous photo during the Vietnam War. The photo in question is the iconic “The Terror of War” shot with a screaming young girl published by the NY Times in 1972. A former Saigon photo editor reveals a secret he’s been plagued with for ~52 years – setting off a gripping two-year investigation into the truth behind one of the Vietnam War’s most iconic photos. Acclaimed conflict photographer Gary Knight and a small team of journalists embark upon a relentless search to locate and seek justice for a man known only as “the stringer” – a local Vietnamese photographer named Nguyen Thanh Nghe. This doc is a look into his story, the rest of his life, and how the photo was attributed to another photographer in the first place. Nguyen Thanh Nghe was also in attendance at the Sundance premiere, where he stated: “I took the photo.”

Official trailer for Bao Nguyen’s doc The Stringer: The Man Who Took The Photo, from YouTube:

The Stringer: The Man Who Took The Photo Doc Trailer

📸 Based on the Vietnam War photograph “The Terror of War” (originally taken on June 8th, 1972), more commonly referred to as Napalm Girl, depicting Phan Thi Kim Phuc running from a napalm attack, the documentary film questions whether it was credited to the correct photographer. It presents a two-year investigation on the matter, arguing that a photo stringer named Nguyen Thanh Nghe actually took it rather than the officially credited photographer Nick Ut who sold the shot to the Associated Press. The Stringer: The Man Who Took The Photo, aka simply The Stringer, is directed by Vietnamese American doc filmmaker Bao Nguyen, director of the doc films Live from New York!, Be Water, and The Greatest Night in Pop previously, plus TV series including “Open Secrets”. It’s produced by Fiona Turner, Terri Lichstein. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Netflix will debut Nguyen’s The Stringer doc streaming on Netflix worldwide starting November 28th, 2025 this fall. Who’s interested?

“This is about taking what people think they want and giving them way too much of it.” You know it, you hate it, now learn the story behind it! An official trailer has debuted for a documentary called Santacon, indeed it is Santacon: The Documentary, revealing the origin story of this loathed event. “Today, Santacon is known as perhaps the single most hated event on the planet. A dreaded day in which tens of thousands of drunk idiots dress like Santa & invade countless cities around the world to live out their drunkest & most violent instincts. But it began as something else entirely: A piece of Dada street theater designed to shock people out of their everyday existence by creating a sense of awe & confusion. Those who started Santacon in the ’90s are the same people who started Burning Man and who served as the real-life inspiration for Fight Club & Project Mayhem. And today, they want nothing to do with their Christmas creation.” Now you’ve got my attention! Welcome to Santacon: an immersive doc about how great ideas can transform into something else entirely… and what it’s like to accept & live in a world you no longer understand. Yep I’m in.

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Seth Porges’ doc film Santacon, direct from YouTube:

🎅 From the mad weirdos behind Class Action Park comes a new world of chaos and possibility. The true story behind the world’s most hated event is not what you think. Come with us back in time to the 1990s and watch as a sea of Santas… climb the Brooklyn Bridge under the shadow of the Twin Towers… sing Christmas carols with Michael Moore… accuse Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk of being an undercover cop… face off against a phalanx of riot police who believe all the Santas to be terrorists… and engage in countless antics and shenanigans that will force you to question your very sense of reality, and of what is possible in this world. Santacon the doc is directed by acclaimed doc filmmaker Seth Porges, director of the docs Class Action Park, Dreambreaker: A Pickleball Story, and How to Rob a Bank previously, as well as other projects. Produced by Jake Denicola, Michael Garber, Seth Porges. This documentary is premiering soon at the 2025 DOC NYC Film Festival this month. For more info, visit the film’s official site. Interested?

This is premiering soon at the 2025 DOC NYC Film Festival in the Big Apple and will also debut on Prime Video for streaming in December just after. It’s that time of year again! Get your glamorous green holiday decoration before they sell out! The film follows five NYC families as they source, bargain and hustle to sell Christmas trees, blending street smarts and holiday spirit. Described as “a warm, grounded portrait of pride, grit, and the joy they bring — one tree, one customer, one season at a time.” Anyone who has been in New York City around Christmastime has seen so many of these sellers out on street corners everywhere. I love the smell of pine trees and it’s always so exciting to try and find the perfect one for your home. This doc looks like it’s as much about the intense rivalry between these sellers as it is about the magic of Christmas trees. Looks good.

“I am these kids’ propagandist.” Crazy! Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for the acclaimed, award-winning doc film called Mr Nobody Against Putin, made by director David Borenstein as his latest feature. This documentary premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where it won a Special Jury Prize. A brave and resilient primary school teacher secretly exposes Putin’s aggressive militarisation of Russia’s schools and their propaganda tactics in one of the great documentary sensations of the year. It has played at tons of other festivals including CPH:DOX, Docville, Zurich, DOC:NYC and others. Mr Nobody Against Putin was shot over a period of 2 years by Pavel “Pasha” Talankin, the videographer & events coordinator at Karabash Primary School #1. Talankin began seriously documenting his activities after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, when the government began requiring schools to hold regular “patriotic displays” and use a state-written curriculum to justify the invasion to students. Talankin secretly fled Russia during the summer of 2024, aided by his producers and director David Borenstein who worked to get him asylum in Europe, following evidence of police surveillance at his home. This doc looks excellent.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for David Borenstein’s film Mr Nobody Against Putin, via YouTube:

Mr Nobody Against Putin Poster

Pavel “Pasha” Talankin loves his job as a teacher in the small Russian town of Karabash – then Russia invades Ukraine. He is outraged by the new government propaganda in the curriculum, not to mention the school’s being used as a military recruitment ground. In class, Pasha finds ways to playfully protest the regime; more crucially, he becomes a whistleblower – secretly filming the alarming shifts under the guise of his work as school videographer. He risks his life to send the footage overseas to filmmaker David Borenstein – while also planning his own escape. Mr Nobody Against Putin is directed by international doc filmmaker David Borenstein, also director of the films Dream Empire and Can’t Feel Nothing, plus a few other series and short film. It’s produced by Helle Faber. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won a Special Jury Prize. No final release date is set yet – still playing at more festivals and beyond. Expected to open in early 2026 in US theaters. Anyone interested in watching?
