Duki’s ‘Rockstar’ Rise (and Challenges) Shine in Netflix Doc Trailer

written by jummy84

Duki’s meteoric rise in Argentina’s trap scene will be the focus of a new Netflix documentary. On Friday, the streaming service released the first trailer for Rockstar: Duki Desde el Fin Del Mundo, premiering Oct. 2.

Directed by Alejandro Hartmann, the film traces Duki’s evolution from freestyler to cultural phenomenon in South America and Spain. “People saw with their own eyes that I was a little kid like any other,” a young Duki says in the clip, speaking of his rise doing freestyles for El Quinto Escalón. “Before freestyling, I wanted to make music.”

The trailer weaves together moments of acclaim and criticism, along with emotional family memories, including an interview with his mother in tears, recalling, “I couldn’t believe what I was looking at!” as home videos of him as a baby play.

“At a turning point in his career and artistic identity, Mauro finds himself shedding his skin and confronting his inner demons to carry forward the story of Duki and the movement he represents,” reads the synopsis. “Who is Mauro, and who is Duki in the end?”

The teaser also features appearances by Bizarrap and Young Miko. “Duko is like putting on the superhero suit,” says Duki at the end of the video.

Trending Stories

Rockstar: Duki Desde el Fin Del Mundo comes several months after he released his album 5202 in July, featuring “Golfista,” “5202 Type Beat,” and “Agarro La Plata.” And in 2024, Duki welcomed Myke Towers, Eladio Carrion, YG, and Lil Wayne on Ameri.

“For this one, we gave ourselves a lot of time,” he told Rolling Stone when discussing the record back in December. “I’m very in the moment, so it’s hard for me to make an album and hold it for a while, and then go back into the studio to re-record things, but I felt like it was worth it for this.”

“What have I gotten myself into?” Deep down into the drug trafficking spiral… Amazon has debuted the full official trailer for this crazy new 3-part documentary series called Cocaine Quarterback, streaming later this month (right at the start of football season). It’s a new doc from Mark Wahlberg’s company Unrealistic Ideas. As much this sounds like an “unrealistic idea”, it’s an entirely true story. This isn’t a fictional tale! The doc series does feature dramatizations and reenactments, but it this really happened (more on him here). Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel (the full title) follows the FBI’s capture of Owen Hanson, a former USC football player who became major drug kingpin in the early 00s. Detailing Hanson’s rise from modest beginnings, to unexpectedly walking on to the powerhouse USC football team, to illegal sports bookmaking, and eventually smuggling cocaine. After years in prison, Hanson is out now on parole. And this doc includes him telling all about what happened, as well as inside details and archival footage and so much more. Most of this was also detailed in Hanson’s book titled “The California Kid“. This doesn’t even seem that wild! Just another American who saw a key opportunity to make some big money and went for it.

A three-part doc series from Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas, Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel tells the cautionary tale of convicted drug trafficker Owen Hanson (nicknamed “O-Dog”), detailing Hanson’s rise from modest beginnings, to unexpectedly walking on to powerhouse USC football team, to illegal sports bookmaking, and eventually smuggling cocaine. After graduation, with superstar friends making millions in the NFL, the lure of fast money soon becomes too much to resist. Owen parlays his small-time criminality into a risky alliance with a powerful Mexican drug lord, intertwining his quest for wealth with the deadly world of organized crime. When his harebrained money laundering scheme loses millions of the cartel’s cash, Owen is caught in a web of dangerous debt, absurd criminal mishap, and thrilling FBI investigation. Fueled by the insights of people who lived all sides of the case, including Hanson himself, along with a stylish dramatization, the series details Owen’s unbelievable journey from celebrated athlete to cocaine kingpin at the pinnacle of the drug world… with only one direction left to go.

Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel is produced by Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas. This 3-part doc series is directed by Jody McVeigh-Schultz, also the director on Echo Lake, “The Murders at Starved Rock”, “Spy High” doc series. “This is about taking away rights.” “This can’t be America.” An official trailer has debuted for an important documentary film called The Librarians, about the librarians fighting the fascist book banning in America right now. The acclaimed doc will get a global release with backing of a coalition of supporters – including Film Forum, Dogwoof, 8 Above, PBS’ Independent Lens, BBC Storyville, ROCO Films, Kanopy and a cohort of organizations defending the freedom to read including PEN America, the American Library Association, & Penguin Random House. The Librarians traverses small-town USA capturing the shared experience and heroic actions of besieged librarians who are at the center of what has become a large-scale coordinated extremist movement against freedom of information. Faced with a choice to either fall in line or defend our most fundamental rights, these brave librarians have made the choice to risk everything and be the first line of defense against current attacks on our democratic values. The film is not only a timely call to action against the attempts to curtail access to often life saving info for students, it is also an urgent reminder of what is at stake if the marginalized voices at the core of the issues are silenced. Rock on. I just hope it helps.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Kim A. Snyder’s doc film The Librarians, direct from YouTube:

The Librarians Poster

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities. In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale. The Librarians is directed by American doc filmmaker Kim A. Snyder, director of films I Remember Me, Welcome to Shelbyville, Newtown, and Us Kids previously, plus other short docs. Produced by Maria Cuomo Cole, Jana Edelbaum, Janique L. Robillard, & Snyder. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Snyder’s The Librarians doc will debut in select US theaters starting October 3rd, 2025 this fall. For more info, visit the film’s official site.

“The Argentinian State trained me to do that.” The Match Factory has revealed a festival promo trailer for a documentary film called Landmarks, also known as Nuestra Tierra (which translates to Our Earth). This just premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and will be screening at tons of other festivals this fall: San Sebastian, Toronto, New York, Vancouver, and London soon. In 2009, a man & two accomplices try to evict members of the Indigenous community of Chuschagasta in northern Argentina. Claiming ownership of the land & armed with guns, they kill the community’s leader, Javier Chocobar. The murder is caught on video. It takes nine years of protests before court proceedings are finally opened in 2018 – director Lucrecia Martel started filming in order to make this doc. During all this time, the killers have remained free. The film combines the voices and photographs of the community with vérité courtroom footage to explore the long history of colonialism & land dispossession that led up to this crime. A fly on the wall doc that captures the lawsuit and realities of trying to get real justice in a broken world. It is still seeking proper distribution.

Here’s the festival promo trailer (+ poster) for Lucrecia Martel’s doc Nuestra Tierra, from YouTube:

Nuestra Tierra Poster

Via NYFF: “In October 2009, Javier Chocobar, a member of the indigenous Chuchagasta community in northwest Argentina’s Tucumán Province, tried to defend himself & his people from being forcibly evicted from their land by a local landowner and two former police officers. As a result, the 68-year-old Chocobar was shot and killed, and two other community members were wounded. In her expansive and enlightening first feature documentary, filmmaker Lucrecia Martel takes a sweeping approach to this tragic true story, triangulating the murder trial of the three men, the lives of Chocobar and his fellow Chuchagasta people, and the centuries-old, colonialist legacy of land and property theft across [all of] Latin America. With a ravishing, at times vertiginous visual approach to filming the natural beauty of the contested land, Martel pays cinematic tribute to people whom others [have always] systematically tried to erase from history.” 🇦🇷

Nuestra Tierra, also titled Landmarks, is directed by acclaimed Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel, director of the films La ciénaga, The Holy Girl, The Headless Woman, and Zama previously, plus tons of other shorts. Produced by Rei Pictures (Benjamin Domenech, Santiago Gallelli, Matias Roveda), Louverture Films (Joslyn Barnes), Piano (Julio Chavezmontes), Pio & Co (Sandrine Dumas, Marie-Pierre Macia, Claire Gadea), Snowglobe (Katrin Pors, Mikkel Jersi), Lemming Film (Leontine Petit, Erik Glijnis). This initially premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival in the Out of Competition section; it also plays at the Toronto, New York, London Film Fests next. No US release date is set yet – stay tuned for updates. Who’s intrigued?

Inspiring Doc ‘Memphis to the Mountain’ Trailer About a Climbing Trip

by Alex Billington
September 5, 2025
Source: YouTube

“Not everyone’s going to be able to make it up.” Hulu has unveiled the official trailer for Memphis to the Mountain, a new three-part documentary series – now streaming on Hulu as of this weekend. An inspiring story about how rock climbing can actually change lives. The project was inspired by & born from Memphis Rox, a nonprofit climbing gym / community center founded by Tom Shadyac and Chris Dean, which has served as a beacon of hope and opportunity in South Memphis (check it out here). Known as one of the most underserved communities in the country, South Memphis is a neighborhood with roots in Black American history and culture—home to Stax Records, the birthplace of Aretha Franklin, and the final pulpit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., where he delivered his iconic “Mountaintop” speech a day before his assassination. Memphis to the Mountain captures a bold, cinematic expedition in which a handful of young climbers from Memphis Rox embark on a life-changing journey to climb a big rock wall on Mt. Kenya in Africa—leaving behind daily adversity to scale new literal and metaphorical heights in the world of elite mountaineering. This is actually a really moving story to tell and confirms how rock climbing is more than just a fun sport.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Zachary Barr’s doc Memphis to the Mountain, from YouTube:

Memphis to the Mountain Poster

Memphis to the Mountain Poster

Memphis to the Mountain follows a determined group of young climbers from one of South Memphis’s most overlooked and hard-edged neighborhoods—where climbing is virtually unknown—as they set out to conquer a 16,000-foot rock tower on Mt. Kenya. Over the course of a year, they must endure grueling preparation, training alongside some of the sport’s most renowned figures, including Alex Honnold and Philip Henderson. Battling thin air, raw fear, and the limits of their own endurance, they come to realize that the hardest climb isn’t the mountain—it’s transforming who you believe you can be. A story of grit, transformation, and the unshakable power of reaching beyond what you thought possible. Memphis to the Mountain is directed by filmmaker Zachary Barr, director of the doc film Black Ice and many Reel Rock films as well. Made by Sender Films & Shady Acres Entertainment. Exec produced by Tom Shadyac, Kelley L. Carter, Jason Aidoo, Peter Mortimer, & Zachary Barr. Hulu will debut the Memphis to the Mountain doc series streaming on Hulu starting September 5th, 2025 – it’s available to watch now. Anyone interested?

'John Candy: I Like Me' Review: Colin Hanks Doc

‘John Candy: I Like Me’ Review: Colin Hanks Doc

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

I fell in love with John Candy the moment I saw him serve up those shovel-sized pancakes in “Uncle Buck.” John Hughes wrote the part of Uncle Buck specifically for Candy, and the uncle’s affection for his nieces and nephew was true in real life too.

Now, over 30 years after Candy’s death in 1994, comes a new documentary “John Candy: I Like Me,” full of funny anecdotes about a guy virtually everyone liked and also what being that guy cost him. Directed by Colin Hanks, it premiered on opening night of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival with Hanks, producer Ryan Reynolds, and Candy’s children, co-executive producers Chris Candy and Jennifer Candy-Sullivan, onstage for a post-screening Q&A.

If you already loved John Candy, this doc will make you love him even more. If you were born after his time, it will be a lovely introduction. Still, the way the doc lingers on its unabashed celebration of Candy’s life and work yet rushes through its brief examination of his psyche prevents it from being a total knockout.

From Candy’s SCTV improv buddies—Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Dave Hall, Andrea Martin—to Hollywood collaborators like Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, and Mel Brooks, to close friends Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray, the film is overflowing with household names. A history of the Toronto sketch comedy scene runs as a convenient subplot.

Some of the most memorable commentary comes from Bill Murray, who is the first and last person to appear. At the premiere, Reynolds said Murray was the hardest person to book. After many unreturned calls and even ghosting a set date, Reynolds finally got Murray to agree when he sent him a video of his then two-year-old son saying, “Do the interview.”

Murray sets up one of the narrative difficulties of the film: John Candy was practically a saint, and it’s hard to find people who have anything negative to say. The film leans into this and focuses primarily on celebrating Candy, who appeared in more than 30 films and died of a heart attack alone in his hotel room on a shoot in Durango, Mexico. He was 43 years old. We learn early on that Candy’s own father, whom he strongly resembled, died of a heart attack when John was just five. He lived with the fear that he too would meet an early grave like his father.

The slew of interviews from family, friends, and colleagues forms the skeleton of the film, alongside clips from Candy’s extensive filmography dating back to the mid-1970s. The archival footage of Candy — on set and at home with his kids — gives the film vitality, and the intimate, relaxed settings where interviewees recount memories of the man who left their lives too soon evoke home and hold the film together visually. The score includes heart-wrenching music sung by a poised Cynthia Erivo, recorded especially for the film. It’s a sincere lovefest, warm without being cloying.

But Hanks’ second documentary feature has a classic problem: it lacks editorial discipline. In other words, it’s too long. The reason is a good problem to have — too many beloved stars who rarely give interviews and genuinely wanted to talk about Candy. For example, the now 40-something Macaulay Culkin, who recalls the fatherly care and bond he felt with Candy at a time when his own father and manager was neglecting the child megastar, has some of the most interesting things to say about Candy, but doesn’t appear until the last act. But the recent interview with Dan Akroyd, while nice to see him on camera again, added very little to Candy’s narrative and could’ve been left on the cutting room floor.

Too often the tension between who Candy was to others and who he was to himself gets lost, veering away from the “I Like Me” ethos. (That line comes from another John Hughes’ film, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” in which Candy plays a lovable loser opposite Steve Martin.)

One of the places where the movie reaches beyond simply getting the band back together again is when Candy’s son Chris says that in his father’s last years “his mind was overweight,” complicating the narrative that Candy was unjustly lumped in with “living fast and dying young.” On top of eating his feelings — not to mention smoking and drinking them — Candy, according to his son, a personal trainer, and others included in the doc, increasingly suffered from anxiety and panic attacks as his career slowed and his responsibilities as a businessman grew. Conan O’Brien, recalling when the Harvard Lampoon staff brought Candy to campus, adds a salient point: “The hazard of this business is that it’s very unhealthy for people pleasers.”

What the film eventually draws out is that it wasn’t just Candy’s weight that killed him, but a toxic combination of anxiety, stress, and genetic predisposition to heart disease and obesity. Ultimately the film positions Candy’s legacy as one of a decent guy and a talented performer who, as his daughter Jennifer says, “took care of people,” on and off set. But just as important is how it unravels the long shadow cast by a five-year-old boy’s way of coping with the traumatic loss of a parent.

Many interviewees, like Catherine O’Hara and Candy’s “Splash” castmate Tom Hanks, said that whether acting or not, Candy was extremely present when you were with him. Yet the film doesn’t provide enough space for us to feel that presence. Viewers don’t get much of a chance to sit with the particulars of Candy’s life before the film moves on to the next anecdote. One longs to see a full scene of Candy in action onscreen or in a home video, rather than just snippets. There also wasn’t enough of Candy speaking for himself, rather than people telling us how great he was.

The interviews from the SCTV crew, who had a front-row seat to Candy before and after he became a star, were the most compelling. The doc would have benefitted from more of Catherine O’Hara, shown in the film giving a touching tribute at Candy’s 1994 funeral, whose commentary felt especially rich but truncated.

In the end, Hanks delivers a good, but not great, portrait of a lovable guy whose shortcomings took him out — an ordinary guy with extraordinary talent who remains one of the best comedic actors of the 20th century.

Grade: B-

“John Candy: I Like Me” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It will stream on Prime Video beginning on October 10.

“We feel we decide our own fates, but we don’t.” Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled the official US trailer for a intriguing documentary film called Mistress Dispeller, which originally premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival. It also played at tons of other fests, including Toronto, Zurich, Chicago, & Hot Springs, and will hit US theaters this October. Desperate to save her marriage, a woman in China hires a professional to go undercover and help break up her husband’s affair in an attempt to save her marriage. An intriguing look at a new industry in China featuring a woman known as “Mistress Dispeller” about couples who want to try & stay married. With strikingly intimate access, Mistress Dispeller follows this unfolding family drama from all corners of a love triangle. The production team followed different couples and love triangles for 3 years until they found one that stayed through to the end without withdrawing their consent. It looks much more profound than it sounds, not really criticizing the infidelity as much as exploring why marriages fail & how people can work on fixing their issues, whatever they may be. The poster art is also quite lovely – view below.

“I had the military in place, all we needed to do was coordinate.” Neon has revealed a new official trailer for a documentary film titled Men of War, a fascinating and unsettling look at a rogue military dude who tried to invade Venezuela and overthrow the government. Yes this really happened a few years ago. The film first premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year and will be out on VOD to watch next week – I guess they’re capitalizing on the recent real world news about the US getting involved in Venezuela again. A former U.S. Green Beret is recruited to remove Venezuela’s president and after the mission fails, he is pursued by the government he faithfully served. For some reason the FBI goes after him. This riveting doc film Men of War chronicles the astonishing true story of what was called Operation Gideon—which is the failed 2020 coup attempt in Venezuela—and the covert network of ex-generals, mercenaries, and political operatives behind it. A gripping geopolitical documentary set in the shadows of modern regime change, Men of War is a shocking portrait of power, profit, and betrayal. This looks totally, massively crazy! What a story.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Corben & Gatien’s doc Men of War, direct from Neon’s YouTube:

Men of War Poster

In May 2020, weeks after the U.S. placed a $15M bounty on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, around 60 Venezuelan dissidents, including two former U.S. Green Berets, attempted to reach Venezuela by boat in an effort to remove Maduro from power. Leading the mission was former Green Beret / private military contractor Jordan Goudreau, who branded himself as a real-life action hero & found himself at the center of an international political crisis. Blending tense, real-world drama with the complexity of an espionage thriller, Men of War unfolds through a dynamic mix of archival footage, new interviews, and exclusive prison recordings. The film pulls viewers inside a shadowy web of political double-crossing, covert deals, and shifting allegiances, tracing the path from a botched coup right on Venezuela’s shores to courtroom battles & global manhunts. With unprecedented access to key players on all sides, it reveals the hidden negotiations, betrayals, and high-stakes maneuvering that continue to shape the story in real time.

Men of War is co-directed by producers / doc filmmakers Billy Corben (director of the films Raw Deal: A Question of Consent, Cocaine Cowboys 1 & 2, Square Grouper, Limelight, Dawg Fight, Screwball, Magic City Hustle, 537 Votes, God Forbid) & Jen Gatien (producer on The Girl Is in Trouble, Dixieland, My Dead Boyfriend, Midnight Sun, The Big Take, Measure of Revenge). Produced by Alfred Spellman, Billy Corben & Jen Gatien. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year. The film already opened in select theaters earlier this year. Neon debuts the Men of War doc on VOD starting September 9th, 2025.
