Bone Lake Director on Making an Erotic Thriller, Ignoring Prudes

Violence and sexuality walk hand-in-hand in “Bone Lake,” a new thriller now playing in theaters via Bleecker Street. In fact, the film opens with a nude couple running away from certain death through the forest, an attention-grabbing opening.

That wild spirit is what attracted director Mercedes Bryce Morgan to Joshua Friedlander’s twisty script about two couples who accidentally double-book an Airbnb. As they get to know each other, dark and sinister secrets start to emerge.

“It’s something that wasn’t afraid to be extreme,” she says of the script. “I’ve been so excited about thrillers coming back and the fact that this movie doesn’t shy away from sex. But I’m also attracted to the fact that it’s like a European relationship dramedy. We start off, and you really care about these characters, because the relationship is the mechanism that the horror goes through later. To be able to have that but then actually pay it off and go big or go home in the end made me go, ‘OK, this is what I’m interested in.’”

While Gen Z has been oddly outspoken about wanting less sex in their entertainment, Morgan thinks that most audiences will be able to ride the film’s wavelength.

“Everything is 180, right?” she says. “Either we think skinny jeans are cool and then we’re like ‘Baggy pants are cool’ — I’m pretty sure skinny jeans are going to be cool again. So I think it’s a generational thing. As a millennial, we’re like, ‘Sex in movies … of course.’ I think younger generations probably go, ‘You guys fucked up so many things. Why are you doing this?’ The thing that I say is the people who love this movie are the people who are going to come and see it. And if it’s not for someone, that’s okay. But it makes the people who love our movie just a stronger fan base.”

That said, Morgan was sure to make the sexuality safe and comfortable on set by setting some ground rules.

“First of all, if there’s female nudity, I make sure that there’s male nudity. It’s either everyone’s nude or no one’s nude, to equal it out,” she says. “It was also talking about, ‘What’s the story reason behind why we’re seeing something?’ Nudity is almost even more fun or interesting sometimes if it’s not used in a sexual context.”

Another key to making an erotic thriller is to make sure the cast has chemistry, and Morgan was able to amp that up with a decidedly G-rated exercise.

“One of the first things I did is when Alex Roe and Andra Nechita got to set to play Will and Cin … It might sound silly, but I had them just dance to fun, silly music together because you’re able to get comfortable with someone physically fast,” she says. “That’s a really easy way to do it. They probably thought, ‘Man, Mercedes, this is like in kindergarten. Why are you having us do this?’ But I go, ‘We need to break down these barriers and just integrate with each other.’”

That sense of play kept Morgan energized during the indie film’s shoot, as well as its long road to theaters. “Bone Lake” first debuted at Fantastic Fest in 2024, making it over a year from its world premiere to wide release date. She remains energized and excited for audiences to see it.

“Whenever I choose a movie, I need to love it so much that I expect to carry it around for years of my life,” she says. “So one could be like, ‘Man, it’s been so long,’ but also we wanted to wait to do it the right way, because the right way is for us to release it in theaters. Also, my job is getting to talk about sex and silliness. So just being able to continue to do that with this, I go, ‘All right, I’m fucking here. Let’s go.’ That’s awesome.”

Arshad Warsi And Jitendra Kumar Unite In A Gripping Crime Thriller – Bhagwat Chapter 1: Raakshas Trailer Out | Glamsham.com

The gripping trailer of Arshad Warsi and Jitendra Kumar’s Bhagwat Chapter 1: Raakshas has been released officially, giving audiences a gritty view of a crime, mystery, and moral conflict-filled world. The crime-thriller is directed by Akshay Shere and also stars Ayesha Kaduskar in a major role, and will have its premiere on ZEE5 on October 17.

The trailer kicks off with Arshad Warsi’s character, Vishwas Bhagwat, a tough and troubled cop who is suspended after violently injuring a suspect during an interrogation. Soon after, he is transferred to the remote town of Robertsganj in Uttar Pradesh, where he’s assigned to a disturbing case involving the disappearance of several young girls.

Jitendra Kumar is a seemingly mild-mannered science teacher whose behavior soon arouses suspicion. In a spine-chilling sequence, he is observed luring a little girl under shady circumstances. Vishwas, believing him to be guilty, arrests and beats him up at the police station. But the story takes a dramatic turn as Jitendra’s character strikes back — but not with fists, with brains — defending himself in court with fierce resolve.

The trailer promises a tense courtroom drama steeped in dark undertones and layered moral questions. With haunting visuals and a haunting score, Bhagwat Chapter 1: Raakshas promises to launch into a high-stakes war of perception and truth, law and justice.

Supported by Jio Studios in association with Baweja Studios and Dog ‘n’ Bone Pictures, the movie is set to deliver a dramatic interpretation of institutional failure, societal phobia, and unseen monsters in open sight.

With powerhouse artists like Warsi and Kumar set to go head-to-head, Bhagwat Chapter 1: Raakshas is becoming a riveting and thought-provoking experience this October.

“I can assure you – you have nothing to fear.” Vertical has unveiled a teaser trailer for a horror thriller film titled We Bury The Dead, made by genre filmmaker Zak Hilditch from Australia. This already premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier in the year to superb reviews – though they’ve now scheduled it for release in January 2026 right after the New Year. Setting this up to be a chilling way to kick off 2026 with some unsettling cinema. After a catastrophic military disaster in Tasmania leaves many people gone from a disease, the dead don’t just rise – they hunt. Ava searches for her missing husband among the dead, but what she finds is far more terrifying. Ava joins a “body retrieval unit,” but her search takes a chilling turn when the corpses she’s burying start showing signs of life. Starring Daisy Ridley, Brenton Thwaites, Matt Whelan, Chloe Hurst, Kym Jackson, & Mark Coles Smith. It’s a refreshing new entry in the zombie subgenre, with reviews saying it delivers “a few bursts of genuine scares in the process and an awe-inducing sense of scale.” This is a great teaser! I’ve seen enough – I’m sold & will watch. Horror fans – do not miss it.

Here’s the first look teaser for Zak Hilditch’s horror film We Bury The Dead, from Vertical’s YouTube:

Via SXSW: “From acclaimed writer/director Zak Hilditch, We Bury The Dead is a gripping and emotional thriller set after a military experiment decimates the people of Tasmania. Daisy Ridley stars as Ava, a desperate woman who joins a “body retrieval unit” in the hopes of finding her husband alive. Ava’s search takes a chilling turn, however, when the corpses she’s burying start showing signs of life… As she journeys to the south of Tasmania in search of her husband, Ava is forced to confront the undead — and make peace with her own unfinished business.” We Bury The Dead is written and directed by American filmmaker Zak Hilditch, director of the films The Actress, Plum Role, The Toll, These Final Hours, 1922, Rattlesnake, plus other shorts. Produced by Kelvin Munro, Grant Sputore, Ross Dinerstein, Joshua Harris, Mark Fasano. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and will next screen at the Sitges Film Festival. Vertical releases Hilditch’s We Bury The Dead in select US theaters starting January 2nd, 2026.

Good Boy (2025) – Upcoming Paranormal Thriller | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Good Boy is set to arrive in theaters on October 3, released by Independent Film Company and Shudder. The film takes a familiar haunted house premise and shifts the perspective to a dog named Indy, who alone seems to recognize the dark forces hidden within. Indy and his owner Todd, played by Shane Jensen, leave city life behind to settle in a long-vacant family home. From the beginning, Indy is wary of the place.

He’s watching corners no one else notices, reacting to things unseen, and sensing echoes of the house’s violent past. As Todd begins to unravel under the weight of these unseen forces, Indy becomes the unlikely defender against a presence intent on pulling his human into the afterlife.

Directed by Ben Leonberg, who co-wrote the script with Alex Cannon, Good Boy has been described as a grounded paranormal thriller. Rather than a supernatural tale told through heightened spectacle, the film focuses on natural performances, lived-in spaces, and the instincts of a dog thrust into extraordinary circumstances.

Alongside Jensen, the cast includes Arielle Friedman as Vera, Larry Fessenden as Grandpa, and Stuart Rudin as Richard, with Leonberg himself appearing due to his close bond with Indy. The result is a story where horror blends with loyalty, offering a fresh take on the genre by asking what happens when the only one who sees the truth is the family pet.

“If we don’t get ’em, the cartel will, right? And they don’t forget…” Aura Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for Trap House, an action thriller from filmmaker Michael Dowse (of Fubar, Goon, What If, Stuber, 8-Bit Christmas). This is set for a full nationwide release in November just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Dave Bautista leading this story about rogue teens getting into big trouble! Trap House is centered on a team of elite DEA agents whose rebellious teenage children use their parents’ own tactics—surveillance, infiltration, non-lethal weapons, and special intel—to rob a ruthless drug cartel. Along with Dave Bautista, the movie also stars Jack Champion, Sophia Lillis, Tony Dalton, Whitney Peak, Kate Del Castillo, Zaire Adams, and Bobby Cannavale. The tagline within the trailer: “This isn’t a raid. It’s a reckoning.” This is a totally nuts plot – the kids want to get revenge because the death benefits for a DEA agent are bad, so they decide to go rob the cartels all on their own? Yeah um that seems dangerous, remarkably dangerous.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Dowse’s film Trap House, direct from YouTube:

The screenplay is written by Gary Scott Thompson and Tom O’Connor; from a story by Gary Scott Thompson. It’s produced by Dave Bautista, Rebecca Feuer, Sarah Gabriel, Marc Goldberg, Todd Lundbohm, Jonathan Meisner, Christian Mercuri, and Michael Pruss. Coldwater location guide: Where was the ITV thriller filmed?

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

While it seems they have hit the jackpot, John soon finds himself entangled in a series of horrific acts that he can’t get himself out of. But the events are made all the more worse by the feel of the warm and inviting village and their friendly locals.

With such an impressive backdrop and so much chaos, just where did all the action take place?

Here’s what you need to know about where Coldwater was filmed.

Where was Coldwater filmed? All the major locations

Indira Varma as Fiona and Andrew Lincoln as John. Sister Pictures

Thankfully, Coldwater is a fictional Scottish town, created just for the show. The location was therefore a composite of areas in and around Glasgow.

Speaking of the decision to set the story there, Ireland explained: “I’ve always loved small towns in Scotland and I’ve always wanted to live in one but never had the chance to.

“I love a lot of small towns in Northern Ireland so Coldwater is my little fantasy. You’ve got the beautiful Church, beautiful coffee shops… it’s an idealised version of rural Scotland.

“Everybody is friendly, and a little bit strange. Everyone knows your business and people don’t seem to judge you, but maybe they do.

“My life bringing up a family in Scotland, I was trying to get away from writing about violence, tribalism and identity and all the issues in my other work, but I couldn’t escape it,” he added.

Eve Myles, who plays John and Fiona’s neighbour Rebecca, also discussed how the setting ties into Ireland’s narrative (via The Mirror).

“I think the lay of the land and the precinct is incredibly important to this because the character John runs away from the hustle and bustle of London and is running away from his problems only to land in the jaw of the biggest monster of his life in this idyllic, beautiful setting that intoxicates us with its beauty and the mystery of it,” she said. “And how ethereal the land is in Scotland, only to find what John and his family find in a tiny, tiny nook of it.

“So it’s about not judging things by its cover but the cover is very enticing and seductive.”

Myles added: “What the show does really well is that it goes against any sorts of expectations and surprises you with those reveals.”

Ewen Bremner, who plays Rebecca’s husband Tommy, went on to talk about the “power” that Scotland holds “in the minds of Southerners, especially in London”, adding: “It has ancient, mythical significance.”

Speaking to The Sunday Post, he said that is was “really pleasurable to see how much Eve, Indira and Andrew fell in love with Glasgow”.

“They just completely fell head over heels,” he continued.

“And we were eating some fantastic food. We’d all very frequently be meeting up after work to have a nice meal.”

Here’s a breakdown of the main areas they used.

Dunlop, East Ayrshire

The cast of Coldwater walking down a Dunlop street

Andrew Lincoln and Indira Varma star in Coldwater. Sister Pictures for ITV

Dunlop is a small village around 20 miles southeast of Glasgow city. It is where the main external scenes were filmed of Coldwater, and is home to the church, which proves central to the community on the show.

The area prides itself on local produce, including its own cheese shop, as well as a selection of independently owned stores, and of course, the local pub, The Smuggler’s Inn.

Director Lee Haven Jones said of the village: “The key thing for me was to make the place as real as possible. We have to understand why John and Fiona want to live in this rather lovely village, because they’ve come from London and they’re in search of a new life.

“So it was really important that this place felt aspirational, that it was beautiful. But at the same time, it felt very real.”

Glen Fruin and Loch Lomond

Ewen Bremner as Tommy in Coldwater – he is holding a rifle and standing near a car parked on the edge of a woods

Ewen Bremner as Tommy in Coldwater. Sister Pictures for ITV

For the more scenic scenes, the team used Glen Fruin to capture the picturesque nature of Scotland, with valleys, streams and woodland.

It is located adjacent to Loch Lomond, a freshwater lake that’s part of the Trossachs National Park.

While on the show it is part of the village, in reality it is northwest of Glasgow, and approximately 40 miles north of Dunlop, where the show films its external village scenes.

Coldwater continues on Sunday 28th September at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.

Wayward is unlike any other thriller – for one unexpected reason

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Everyone is a bit too friendly, the local school a little too efficient… And the chatty principal of the school? Far too nice, with an eerie smile endlessly plastered across her face. It all feels a bit uneasy, deliberately so, which is why it’s so surprising that the one aspect of this story which does fit in perfectly is queerness, despite the sinister, small-town setting and genre at hand.

OK, it shouldn’t be that surprising if you’re even slightly familiar with the work of series creator Mae Martin, who also stars as Alex Dempsey, a police officer investigating some troubling disappearances at the local school.

Fans of Taskmaster or the Canadian comedian’s semi-biographical dramedy Feel Good might already be aware of how Martin explores their non-binary identity in their work. But even so, a genre-blending psychological thriller like this might be the last place you’d expect to see Martin navigate such themes. And what’s even more surprising is exactly how Martin goes about this.

It would have been easy to play off the horrors that so often come when queer people are forced to return to their hometown, or any small town for that matter. There’s a reason so many of us migrate to cities, after all, often as an escape from the bigotry that – not always – but often comes in the rural parts of pretty much any country.

But after Mae’s character Alex joins their wife in Tall Pines, no one bats an eyelid at his identity as a trans man. When a fellow cop instantly accepts Alex into the “brotherhood”, it’s hard not to wonder if this so-called acceptance might be part of the wider facade that’s hiding something dark and rotten at the heart of this town.

However, as the series progresses, it becomes clear that this isn’t actually the case at all.

Sarah Gadon as Laura Redman and Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey. Netflix

Yes, it turns out that Tall Pines is all kinds of messed up, but the problems at hand have nothing to do with intolerance or hate (at least when it comes to queer and trans identity).

Alex never hides who he is, and he never feels the need to talk about it lots either. This isn’t a queer drama about the struggles or even joy of being trans. Instead, this is an occasionally funny nightmarish thriller where the main character just so happens to be a trans man.

Non-conforming gender identities are rarely seen on screen as it is – and much less than some would have you believe – but what’s even rarer is to see these themes incorporated so organically in a wider genre story that has nothing to do with queerness at all.

When Alex pretends to be taking his testosterone shots as an excuse to escape and further his investigation, it’s a small detail that normalises trans identity without making it the focus. Not that there would be any issue in doing so – these stories are hugely important and valid too – but there’s something to be said for normalising such experiences in this current climate especially.

There’s an exchange around the midway mark between two teenagers called Abbie and Leila where the former jokes that, “Cops just swing their dicks around,” while the latter suggests “I don’t think [Alex] has a dick.”

In another show, this could have come across as distasteful or even disrespectful, but Wayward is queer through and through, so jokes like this hit differently here (especially given Martin’s key involvement in the writing itself). Leila is bisexual even, as many of the characters are suggested to be.

Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila and Sydney Topliffe as Abbie talking to Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey in a corridor, who is wearing a police uniform. They look panicked, dressed in blue jumpsuits

Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey, Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila and Sydney Topliffe as Abbie. Michael Gibson/Netflix

It’s not just through language or visibility where Wayward champions this, though. From the very first episode, Martin regularly appears shirtless and even naked in one particularly memorable sex scene between Alex and his wife. At a time when trans bodies are regularly othered, framing Martin’s sexuality so viscerally with so much nudity is groundbreaking in and of itself. Plus, it’s hot, and what would a thriller be without at least one moment as steamy as this?

But what’s perhaps most impressive about Wayward is how it neither demonises nor idolises queer characters like Alex. While some people in the show are more monstrous than others, they all exist in the murky greys of good or bad, right or wrong. And I’m not just talking about that icky tadpole water either.

Looking at the series as a whole, that’s what makes the ending in particular so special.

Because just when you think Alex has escaped Tall Pines with Abbie and his baby in tow, it turns out that this happy ending the show tricks us into seeing wasn’t actually real at all. The truth is that Alex lets Abbie down, choosing his new family over doing the right thing.

It’s never framed in a way to make you think Alex is selfish because he’s queer. If anything, it’s quite remarkable to see a queer family foregrounded in a show of this nature, made up of a trans man, his queer wife and their newborn child. In fact, the family is actively celebrated by the entire community, and sure, it’s mostly made up of cult weirdos now led by Alex’s wife, but it’s a celebration nonetheless.

Nothing is what it seems in Wayward, twisting and bending our expectations throughout. And that might be the queerest thing of all about this show, which redefines mainstream notions of family and genre with a delightfully queer outsider perspective. More than the thrills or the scares or the Mufasa one-liners, it’s this that helps set Wayward apart in the best way possible.

“What if something followed me back?” “Find out what the ‘what’ is, okay?” Vertical has unveiled the main official trailer for 2025’s The Astronaut, a sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Jessica Varley making her feature directorial debut. It lands in theaters in the US starting in October – because it is seriously creepy and they want it to play during horror season. After returning from her first space mission barely surviving re-entry, astronaut Sam Walker is placed under NASA’s care at a high security house for rehab and medical testing isolated out in the woods. However, when disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth. Is it real or is it just in her head? Or is it something else entirely? 👽 Starring Kate Mara as Sam, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, & Macy Gray. This originally premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. This is a much better trailer than the first look promo we also posted. This looks like an unsettling thriller that will play up the mystery of “what is really going on?!” right up until the last moment. I’m very curious now…

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Jess Varley’s sci-fi film The Astronaut, direct from YouTube:

You can watch the first look promo for Jess Varley’s The Astronaut film right here for even more footage.

👩‍🚀 Humanity is about to learn we’re not alone… When astronaut Sam Walker returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Required to be quarantined, her adopted father General William Harris places Sam under NASA surveillance in a high security house, isolated in the woods. Reunited with her husband, Sam appears to be re-acclimating and preparing for her next mission. When disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth, and the agencies meant to protect her are endangering her life. Not even those close to her can be trusted. The Astronaut is written and directed by American indie filmmaker Jess Varley, making her feature directorial debut after a few other shorts. It’s produced by Brad Fuller, Eric B. Fleischman, Chris Abernathy, Cameron Fuller. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Vertical will release Jess Varley’s The Astronaut film in select US theaters starting October 17th, 2025 coming up this fall. Want to watch this?

“‘It’s not over.’ Some sort of code…” Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a thriller series titled Lazarus, arriving to watch starting in October this fall. Based on an original story idea and written by the New York Times best-selling author Harlan Coben and BAFTA-winner Danny Brocklehurst. Lazarus follows a man who returns home after his father’s suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that can’t be explained. It’s not based on any of Harlan Coben’s books, it’s something he came up with just for this new series. “Like father, like son.” A forensic psychologist investigates cold case murders after returning to his family home following the death of his father – likely discovering there’s a connection between his father’s death and his sister’s murder 25 years ago. Starring Sam Claflin as Young Laz, Bill Nighy as Doctor L, and Alexandra Roach as Jenna Lazarus, with David Fynn, Karla Crome, Kate Ashfield, and Roisin Gallagher as Laura. This looks like it has some clever twists and turns built into it, though it’s yet another new murder mystery series. What are the bigger implications? Who did it? Is his dad now an AI hologram?

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Harlan Coben’s series Lazarus, direct from PV’s YouTube:
