On September 19, the nation mourned the sudden passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg. In a heartfelt tribute, the state of Assam has decided to halt screenings of all other films, including Thamma, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, Kantara: A Legend Chapter – 1, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, Jolly LLB 3, and Regretting You, from October 31, allowing his final film, Roi Roi Binale, to play exclusively across theatres in the state.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “All theatres in the North-eastern state will discontinue holdover releases. Even new releases like Baahubali: The Epic, Single Salma, The Taj Story, The Black Phone 2, Bugonia, Good Boy, etc., will not be screened. Every cinema in Assam will show Roi Roi Binale only.”

The film’s ticket sales have been historic, with weekend shows nearly sold out and weekday shows filling fast. Screenings in Guwahati will begin as early as 6:00 am, while in Tezpur, the first show may start even earlier.

Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan and written by Zubeen Garg, Roi Roi Binale is an Assamese-language musical romantic drama produced under Zeal Creations and i-Creation. The film stars Zubeen Garg in his final acting role alongside Mousumi Alifa, Joy Kashyap, Achurjya Borpatra, and others. The movie is set to release on October 31.

Zubeen Garg’s death

Renowned Assamese singer‑actor Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, while in Singapore, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed. He was on a yacht outing near St John’s Island, preparing for the upcoming North East India Festival. During a swim, he lost consciousness and was rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead. The official cause of death on his death certificate is listed as “drowning.”

Singapore police stated that preliminary investigations show no suspicion of foul play, but a coroner’s inquiry is underway to analyse the precise circumstances.

Taylor Sheridan’s New Deal Shows A-List Creators Are Still King

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Taylor Sheridan may never produce another series as wildly popular as “Yellowstone.” NBCUniversal will not suddenly steal away the rights to “Yellowstone” from Paramount. But the changing of the guard that will result in Sheridan taking his services from Paramount to NBCUni is seismic all the same because his name brand is more valuable than almost any individual IP he’s created.

As Puck first reported on Sunday night, Sheridan intends to strike a new overall deal for both film and TV with NBCUniversal once his commitments to Paramount are completed. Sheridan’s film deal with Paramount expires in March and his new film deal with Universal will begin next year, and he’s tied up with Paramount on the TV side until 2028, at which point he’ll then be able to start making shows for NBCUni. He’ll still be expected to stay plenty busy with Paramount until that time, but his time making a mountain of entertainment for Paramount has an end date.

Nobody Wants This Season 2 stars Timothy Simons as Sasha, Jackie Tohn as Esther, shown holding each other in front of the Hollywood sign

Paramount and NBCUniversal each declined to comment for this story.

It’s a shocking coup for a few reasons. For one, Paramount’s new CEO David Ellison recently fawned praise over Sheridan as his new company’s top creator, calling him a “singular genius” with a “perfect track record.” “My goal is to have Taylor call Paramount his home for as long as he wants to be telling stories,” Ellison told CNBC in August.

Paramount too since it merged with Skydance is the one that has been doing the poaching. One of the new regime’s first major deals was to woo the Duffer Brothers away from Netflix, offering them the chance to make culture-defining movies for theaters in a way Netflix would’ve been reluctant to offer. James Mangold signed an overall deal with Paramount and will now call it home for years to come. It was also unafraid to bring back Will Smith and Johnny Depp from Hollywood jail and make them the face of new franchises. Paramount even locked up “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker for $1.5 billion, because it would be a blow if they walked out the door too.

'Yellowstone'
‘Yellowstone’Paramount Network

What Paramount realized, just as Donna Langley did at NBCUni, is that it’s the people that are worth spending on, not brands. Langley is making the bet that Sheridan will continue producing hits at the pace he’s done at Paramount, but also that audiences are coming to watch because it’s a Taylor Sheridan project. That they’re spinoffs of the Dutton family or are star vehicles for Sylvester Stallone or Nicole Kidman are secondary.

Thus far Paramount had been willing to write Sheridan a blank check because his shows — “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Tulsa King,” “Landman, “Lioness,” “1923,” the reality competition series “The Road,” and upcoming series “Y: Marshals,” spinoff “NOLA King” starring Samuel L. Jackson, and “The Madison” — comprise the majority of Paramount+’s streaming strategy. Those and new episodes of “Knuckles.” The shows may be expensive, which Puck reported may have been part of the reason that led to the divorce, but they deliver, continually topping streaming charts.

Sheridan also has rare clout to operate the way he wants. He’s the auteur creator who writes all his series on his own, he stays put on his Texas ranch and shoots most of his series from his home state, and he’s had the clout to push back on even his stars like Kevin Costner when it comes to who really calls the shots on the direction of the show.

There are only a handful of TV creators who have such clout in the industry. Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy have virtual free reign at Netflix. Non-writers like Dick Wolf and Jerry Bruckheimer are still immensely important name brands. People like Donald Glover, Greg Berlanti, Chuck Lorre, Noah Hawley, Mindy Kaling, Jesse Armstrong, Kenya Barris, and Lisa Joy & Jonah Nolan inspire that kind of loyalty and (for most of them) back it up with prolificness. Sheridan though is 1-of-1, and soon he’ll be taking his mess of shows, the type of output you can literally build a streaming service around, to NBCUni and Peacock.

L-R: Sylvester Stallone as Dwight
‘Tulsa King’Brian Douglas/Paramount+

When the 2023 writers strike arrived, it became clear how valuable of currency it was to have an overall deal with one of those top names. Studios en masse suspended all of its first look and overall arrangements with writers, and the studios used the opportunity to purge from its ranks some of the expensive ones with talent that weren’t actually resulting in any shows. The ones that remained are the cream of the crop, and lack of activity has never been Sheridan’s problem.

By setting him up with a film deal as well, Sheridan is in a position to be a top filmmaker and a top showrunner. Universal knows how to market its auteurs, be it Steven Spielberg, Jordan Peele, or coming movies from The Daniels and Christopher Nolan. Those are similarly names who can get the clout to do what they want at the pace they want because they have a track record and an audience that is now showing up because it’s a Nolan movie or Peele movie, not because of the IP they’re working with.

We’ll see if Sheridan can join that company on both sides of the aisle. He has a film for Warner Bros. called “F.A.S.T.” likely arriving next year, and before “Yellowstone,” he looked like he was on a hot streak of movies thanks to the unofficial trilogy of “Sicario,” “Hell or High Water,” and “Wind River.” His last feature, “Those Who Wish Me Dead” with Angelina Jolie, fizzled at the box office with just $19.1 million worldwide.

Eventually, Paramount+ will get the streaming rights back to “Yellowstone” itself, which famously was licensed to none other than NBCUni’s Peacock. By that time though, Peacock could have its own new Taylor Sheridan shows to make up for it.

Hold up, y’all — NLE Choppa is out here showing off that glow and fans can’t stop talking about it! The rapper hit social media with a compilation video showing his impressive skin transformation, and let’s just say, the internet is giving him his flowers. From rough breakouts to radiant, glass-skin energy, Choppa’s new look is serving peace, confidence, and self-care goals.

NLE Choppa’s Glow Hits Different

In the video shared to Instagram on Saturday, NLE Choppa shared side-by-side clips highlighting his journey. The “before” shots show him rocking his signature braids, stud earrings, and natural lighting that revealed some acne across his face. But fast-forward to now — Choppa’s skin is smooth, glowing, and clear, with a freshly shaven head and a calm, grounded vibe that fans couldn’t ignore. And, in a sentimental caption, the rapper shared: “All Praises To The Most High… HE is WHO RESTORES. I Must Be Doing Something Right!“

The TL Goes Up Over Choppa’s Glow-Up

As soon as NLE Choppa’s video hit The Shade Room’s Instagram, fans wasted no time flooding the comments. Many opened up about their own skincare journeys, saying they could relate to the struggle of getting their skin right. Others joked that all he needed was a little water, while plenty begged him to drop the routine ASAP!

The Instagram user @thegreatnle wrote, “No skincare all glory to the most high.“

This Instagram user @nicknpattiwhack_ said, “He probably was just going through puberty.“

And, Instagram user @jayce_ball added, “yall so worried about the grammar, tell the man to drop the routine“

Meanwhile, Instagram user @majikkmonet shared, “he went plant based. simple. from someone who ate meat, processed foods, and dairy. i’m telling u, stop. my skin has never been better and my hair grows like weeds oh and my energy is peak“

While Instagram user @iamphionakatz wrote, “No one talks about the negative emotions one goes through when their skin just won’t clear up and the positive emotions that come with clear skin. I know he must be at cloud 9 now!“

Then Instagram user @dweezy_u_crazy claimed, “Look like you just needed some water 😂”

Lastly, Instagram user @laladskincoach said, “Who’s the esthetician ????“

New Look, New Energy: Choppa’s Era Of Change

NLE Choppa’s glow-up isn’t just skin deep — it’s giving transformation from the inside out. The rapper shocked fans back in July after wiping his Instagram clean and debuting a new look that marked the start of a fresh chapter. In a post featuring two photos, Choppa sat in a barber’s chair with a cape draped over him, showing off his freshly shaved head against a wall filled with Tupac memorabilia — a powerful visual that had fans talking. The second photo revealed a shoebox filled with his cut hair and a handwritten note, symbolizing a moment of release and renewal. It’s clear this glow-up didn’t just start with clear skin — it started with shedding old layers and stepping into peace.

Canceled Disney+ Shows From ‘Lizzie McGuire’ to ‘Goosebumps’ – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 October 25, 2025

It’s been quite a rocky time for entertainment — especially television shows. In 2025 alone, major companies including Paramount Global, NBCUniversal and The Walt Disney Company have canceled multiple TV shows. And with the latest news on Goosebumps, Disney+ fans are frustrated that the company has gutted a handful of their favorite series. Below, Hollywood Life has compiled a list of the most recent Disney+ canceled TV shows so far.

Lizzie McGuire Revival

This one really stung 1990s and 2000s kids. Back in 2019, production on a Lizzie McGuire revival had begun, with original cast members Hilary Duff, Adam Lamberg, Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine and Jake Thomas reprising their roles as well.

However, after two episodes were filmed, production went on hiatus in early 2020. At the end of the year, Hilary revealed the revival was no longer happening.

“I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life,” Hilary wrote in an Instagram announcement at the time. “She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me. I know the efforts and conversations have been everything trying to make a reboot work, but sadly [and] despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020’s made of.”

Cast members and insiders have said that the Lizzie reboot was canceled due to the issues that arose from the COVID-19 pandemic and creative differences with Disney.

Goosebumps

Disney+ canceled Goosebumps after two seasons but producer Sony Pictures Television was planning to shop the show to other platforms, Variety reported. A reason behind its cancelation was not disclosed.

The Mysterious Benedict Society

Disney+ canceled The Mysteries Benedict Society in 2023 as part of a cost-cutting initiative because the streamer had lost millions of subscribers at the time, per Deadline.

National Treasure: Edge of History

No clear reason was given for the 2023 cancelation of National Treasure: Edge of History, but with the decrease in subscribers that Disney+ had at the time, viewership was likely impacted.

Big Shot

Similar to The Mysterious Benedict Society, Big Shot was also taken off Disney+ due to the company’s cost-cutting plan after losing millions of subscribers during the first few months of 2023.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers

Like several other short-lived Disney+ shows, The Might Ducks: Game Changers was taken off the platform in 2023 while The Walt Disney Company attempted to cut costs.

Reissue of Classic Folk LP Shows Joan Baez in Transition » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

American folk music legend Joan Baez’s interpretive skills are undervalued. Many know her through her one-time partner, Bob Dylan, and, to a lesser extent, from her remarkable, vibrato-heavy soprano and decades of political activism. However, some of her best-known covers, especially her 1971 hit version of the Band‘s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down“, can feel woefully inappropriate, with or without botched lyrics.

Still, a new reissue of her 1965 album, Farewell, Angelina, shows Baez in generally stronger form singing work by Dylan, Donovan, Pete Seeger, and Woody Guthrie, bolstered by Kevin Gray’s new all-analog mastering, cut directly from the original tapes. Pressed on heavyweight (180 gram) vinyl in a faithfully replicated jacket, the LP sounds warmly inviting and enveloping, providing a welcome alternative to listening on CD or streaming.

Amid the booming folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, 18-year-old Baez and her dulcet voice first came to public attention when she performed at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. In the years that followed, she became known for championing young songwriters like Dylan and for marching alongside activists like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Farewell, Angelina provides a transition between Baez’s early acoustic work and her more electric and orchestrated recordings of the near future. The album was recorded the year Dylan went electric at the same festival, and it is the first Baez record to feature an electric guitar. Whether Baez’s new direction was more commercially or artistically motivated (if such a separation is possible), the album shows Baez changing with the times, however tentatively such work might suggest today.

The title track, the first of four Dylan songs, is gorgeously understated, opening Farewell, Angelina with a gently apocalyptic omen. Baez sounds more in her element, regardless of instrumentation, than on some tracks. Another acoustic track, the traditional “The Wild Mountain Thyme“, sounds less muted but also has Joan Baez sounding like she’s at her most comfortable.

On the other hand, the electric guitar might have been a novelty in American folk music at the time. Still, despite the loveliness of the instrument’s accompaniment on “Daddy, You Been On My Mind,” it sounds more like an accessory than a necessity today.

In addition, with hindsight, some potentially exciting tracks sound out of place: a chipper, strident rendition of Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” is the most awkward track. Other versions of Baez singing the song, like on Live at Newport, sound steadier and more naturally performed. In contrast, the version with a louder electric band on Baez’s underrated 2005 live album, Bowery Songs, is interpretively superior to either version.

The most haunting moment on Farewell, Angelina is “Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind“, a German translation of Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone“, recorded two decades after the end of World War II. Though it lacks the cultural cachet of the Dylan covers, “Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind” is the album’s greatest track, in its subdued mourning.

In fact, to my ears, the record’s ending is stronger and more startling than its more celebrated beginning, as mentioned in the three consecutive Dylan covers. “Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind” and a sparely electrified, but declarative closer, Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall“, rivet the listener and bring Farewell, Angelina full circle with the apocalyptic specter of nuclear war on the opening title track.

The reissue’s sensitive mastering brings out the acoustic bass and the high tremors of Baez’s voice well, and the record sounds excellent in this incarnation. The album, especially in this reissue, is strong enough to warrant repeated listenings. However, at times, Joan Baez sounds as if she’s in a transitional state—not only with the electric guitar behind her, but also with her interpretive skills. However, the reissue is nuanced enough to appeal to many fans of (mostly) acoustic music, not only American folk music of the time.

Los Cinco Cardones’ Debut Shows Their Versatility » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

The title track of Los Cinco Cardones’ debut, El Quinto Cardón, sits just about at the album’s center. It’s a spellbinding ten minutes of desert-tinged jazz, keys lifting like a midnight wind, guitar echoing over open sand, bass rolling along on a high-speed night drive, sax soaring into a cloudless midnight. That is both the record’s heart and its pinnacle: the quartet performing not just a piece but a cohesive landscape, breathtaking and dreamlike. Here is where the band move with the tightest fit, everything glowing, everyone creating. It is outstanding.

I start my review five tracks in, not because “El Quinto Cardón” is representative of the rest of the album–no two of its tracks are alike enough for such a claim–but because I can’t stop listening to it in all its lengthy, evocative glory. Part of me thinks I would like an entire album of this song.

A wiser part of me, though, knows that what makes this piece so mesmerizing is that it arrives amid a very eclectic mix. Each of the eight tracks of El Quinto Cardón has its own feel, profoundly so. El Quinto Cardón opens with the straight-ahead grooves of “El Baile De Los Cardones”, a warm introduction to the group on which each member gets at least a moment in the spotlight: bandleader Sebastian Maschat on drums, Sebastian Dimarco on bass, Diego Sole on guitars, and Howard Clifton on sax and keys. “Afresque” picks up the pace with broad Afrobeat references, giving Clifton a chance to loosely emulate Fela with swinging brass.

The band skip into unexpected meters on “Clowns are the Real Magicians”, in which Clifton’s lilting keys are crucial in delivering on the whimsy promised in the title, as are subtle horn squeaks at the end. There’s an esoteric flair to “Ode to Being Weightless”, in which Clifton sings over retro, agile riffs. After monumental “El Quinto Cardón” is a trio of more fast-paced numbers: melodica-infused “Peyotito”, guitar-driven and progressive-tinged “Sheep of My Parrish”, and quirky Afrobeat-meets-fast march “Afrencera En Onze Típico”.

It’s hard to imagine getting bored at a Los Cinco Cardones gig. El Quinto Cardón is an impressive show of the group’s range, and their musicianship throughout is unquestionable. It’s a promising sampler, well-balanced between freedom and structure. The diversity of the band’s repertoire is intriguing, if sometimes hard to parse as a single record. Simply put, a lot is going on. Even so, the band hit marvelous heights, and there are moments here that are truly exhilarating and well worth the time spent listening.

Los Cinco Cardones don’t necessarily need to pare down their stylistic field, to be sure. There is much to be said for how wide a net is cast on El Quinto Cardón. Each member does exceptional work with complex meters and thoughtful melodies. Would they be better off sticking to a single mood for a single album? Maybe the focus would make it easier for me to stop listening to one track over and over.

Then again, maybe the group know better than to try to reuse textures they’ve already put to good use. Whatever their strategy, I look forward to the quartet’s next directions, however many there are and however far they go before making yet more turns.

Gracie Abrams’ Red Rocks Shows Will Be Livestreamed by Apple Music

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

The Secret of Us (Deluxe) tour might be over, but you can relive it on screen this fall

Gracie Abrams‘ The Secret of Us (Deluxe) tour might be over, but you can relive it this fall. Apple Music will stream the singer-songwriter’s Red Rocks show on Oct. 29.

Abrams played the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue on Aug. 11 and 12, where she performed her hit “That’s So True,” the fan favorite “Death Wish,” gems from the deluxe, and surprise songs (“Block Me Out” on Night One, “I Know It Won’t Work” on Night Two).

It’s unclear which show (or both) will stream, but Apple Music’s livestream is slated for Oct. 29 at 10 p.m. ET, and will be available afterwards on Spatial Audio. Zane Lowe will interview Abrams prior to the event.

Abrams released The Secret of Us, her second album, in June 2024, and dropped the deluxe version that October. The 2024 and 2025 tour legs allotted to 83 shows (including her Madison Square Garden debut). The two Red Rocks performances took place in the final month of tour, which concluded with two nights in Mexico City on Aug. 26 and 27.

Earlier this week, Abrams appeared in conversation with Cyndi Lauper for Rolling Stone‘s Musicians on Musicians package, and discussed her lengthy tour. “The whole thing is constantly shocking,” she told Lauper. “I also find the dopamine-hit piece of it all interesting to contend with, when you stop for even two days.”

Trending Stories

She added: “My greatest takeaway from touring, especially over the past year, because I was feeling kind of existential about it right after the election and everything was on fire … it turns out the best and highest use of my being here on this planet is for the two hours a night that people feel they can come and have some place to, at the very least, be around strangers who are expressing anything loudly. We don’t even really get that these days.”

Diwali 2025: A Look at Top Festive Scenes in Hollywood Films and TV Shows

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Diwali has always found its way into some of the most beloved Hollywood TV shows and films, featuring heartfelt moments to humorous misunderstandings. As the Festival of Lights continues to gain recognition around the world, these on-screen portrayals reflect a growing appreciation for South Asian culture. Here’s a look at how Diwali has been celebrated, or referenced, in popular Western media, from The Office to Never Have I Ever.

1. The Office – Diwali (Season 3, Episode 6)

This is the most iconic Diwali episode in American TV. Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and the Dunder Mifflin team attend a Diwali party hosted by Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling). Michael mistakenly thinks it’s a costume party and arrives in costume but he eventually embraces the event’s true spirit and ends the night by proposing to his girlfriend, Carol. Elsewhere, Jim stays late at the office and gets involved in a drinking game with Andy. Pam later reaches out to connect with Jim, but he doesn’t respond.

2. Ms. Marvel – Episode 2

Diwali

While not entirely focused on Diwali, the show includes beautiful South Asian cultural representation, including festive attire, music and family gatherings that resemble Diwali celebrations. Kamala Khan continues to discover and test her new powers with the help of Bruno. She goes to a party with her friends and begins to uncover more about her family history through her great-grandmother’s mysterious bangle. Meanwhile, her friend Nakia decides to run for a position on the mosque board. Kamala also meets the charming Kamran, and later, he’s revealed to have a deeper connection to her story when he introduces her to his mother, who appears linked to the bangle. The episode ends with Kamala and Kamran bonding over their shared love of Bollywood, just before Kamran reveals that his mother has been wanting to meet Kamala.

3. Outsourced – Season 1, Episode 8

Diwali
Outsourced is a rom-com where a U.S. executive is sent to India and experiences cultural immersion, including a beautiful Diwali festival scene. In the episode, the American manager Todd immerses himself in the festival and gains a deeper understanding of its cultural importance. Wanting to support his team, he gives his employees time off to celebrate, choosing to handle work calls on his own. During this time, he ends up spending the night with his Australian colleague, Tonya.

4. Big Bang Theory – Occasional References

Diwali
While there’s no full Diwali episode, Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) mentions Diwali multiple times and there’s at least one scene with the gang attending Indian festivities. They sing Bollywood songs like Munni Badnam and reference Indian culture humorously.

5. The Simpsons – Treehouse of Horror XXVIII

Diwali
A very short but colourful Diwali reference happens in one of the episodes of Simpsons. It is a glimpse in a montage-style moment. It is not a full scene, but worth a mention for including Diwali in a pop culture icon like The Simpsons.

6. Never Have I Ever – Season 2, Episode 4 (…Been a Perfect Girl)

Diwali
Devi attends a Ganesh Puja, which is similar in setting to Diwali with colourful outfits, family drama and cultural events. She attempts to befriend Aneesa, a new Indian student but things take a turn when she spreads a rumour. True but sensitive, the rumour is about Aneesa having an eating disorder. At the same time, Eleanor sneaks out with Devi and Aneesa to meet Malcolm. Meanwhile, Devi has an uncomfortable run-in with Ben, who makes it clear he’s still upset with her and that their friendship hasn’t been repaired.

7. The Resident (Medical Drama) – Season 2 Episode “00:42:30”

Diwali

The episode features a hospital-hosted Diwali celebration with Indian staff and patients taking part. It attempts to show diversity in medical settings with subtle but respectful Diwali representation.

How Sweet: Sugar Return For First Shows Since 1995

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Sugar, the band Bob Mould formed with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcom Travis in 1991 after the dissolution of the massively influential Hüsker Dü, is reuniting next year for their first shows since January 1995. A propulsive, 138-second new single, “House of Dead Memories,” is out now in tandem with a music video featuring vintage VHS clips of Sugar on tour in the early 1990s.

The trio will return to the stage May 2-3 at New York’s Webster Hall and May 23-24 at London’s Kentish Town Forum. In conjunction, The Singles Collection, a new four-LP boxed set commemorating Sugar’s beloved 1992 debut, Copper Blue, is due Nov. 28 through BMG. It includes the first vinyl release of the previously CD-only “Helpless.”

Despite its short lifespan during the height of grunge, Sugar provided Mould, now 64, a crucial bridge back into playing in a rock band after he’d spent the initial post-Hüsker Dü years recording and performing solo. The group is best-known for the Copper Blue single “If I Can’t Change Your Mind,” and went on to release the ferocious 1993 EP Beaster and the 1994 full-length File Under: Easy Listening before disbanding amicably.

“Sugar was a phenomena. No one could have predicted the results,” says Mould. “We held onto the wheel and did our best to enjoy the wild ride. Sugar was part of a pivotal era in popular music, and a special time in my life.”

After Sugar, Barbe, now 62, became an in-demand producer and engineer for artists such as Drive-By Truckers, the Glands and Deerhunter, and also began teaching at the University of Georgia, where he’s now the director of the school’s Music Business Certificate Program. Travis, now 72, has since drummed in a number of projects, including Kustomized, and worked in the administration department at Brown University.

Mould previously attempted to reform the group in 2011, with an eye on performing Copper Blue in its entirety to commemorate its 20th anniversary the following summer. The musicians actually rehearsed for several days in Barbe’s Athens, Ga., home base, but were ultimately unable to merge their schedules in a way that allowed for a tour at that time. Instead, Mould performed Copper Blue in full on a summer 2012 trek with his longtime solo band of drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy.

“When Bob asked me to play in his band, I was making five or six bucks an hour driving a delivery truck and I’d just had a second baby. I’d been hoping that this whole production thing was going to take off for me,” Barbe tells SPIN of Sugar’s earliest days. “But fast forward 20 years and I had worked on hundreds of records and was extremely busy. My youngest kid was graduating from high school that summer and we were getting him ready to go off to college. I just couldn’t make the logistics work for a Sugar reunion.”

“I was bummed out we didn’t find some way to do it because it would have really been fun, but I also know that Bob had his vision of what he wanted to do and I respect that,” he continues. “I’ve now been at UGA for a pretty long time and have a considerable degree of flexibility. I’d mentioned this to him since, just like, hey, if you ever want to do it again, don’t not ask, because things have changed for me.”

The new Sugar single, “House of Dead Memories,” was recorded in June at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studio in Oakland, Ca. “The return of Sugar is a moment that I’ve been dreaming about for a very long time,” says Travis. “What we managed to accomplish in the short span of time we were in existence still boggles my mind. There was so much packed into that period — the travel, the shows, the recordings and getting to meet so many people who loved and supported us. To get back to working together again with Bob and David is such a gift and I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for us.”

Adds Barbe, “it will all get real when I feel Bob’s amp shaking my pants legs again.”

Mould just wrapped a solo electric North American tour, during which Barbe opened on several dates. A European run in the same format kicks off Nov. 8 in Barcelona and concludes Dec. 2 in Helsinki.
