Why Crime Shows Like Law & Order: SVU Are Comfort Viewing

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Everyone has their own definition of comfort viewing — the TV shows one might watch after a long hard day, or right before bed. The familiar rhythms of a 30 Rock long since memorized, the latest soapy installment of Grey’s Anatomy, or… a show about rape and murder, like Law and Order: SVU.

Watching a dark crime drama as relaxation might seem counterintuitive to a good night’s sleep. Yet it makes sense to a wide range of experts who study the ways pop culture impacts the way we see reality. As Dr. Lisa Kort-Butler tells Consequence, “It’s a grim universe. Some folks want to escape from that in some way. Comedy does that, but some of us want to know there’s something steady in the world. These crime shows, although they are grim, are steady on the side of right.”

As a sociologist who studies media representations of crime and justice, Kort-Butler has observed that a big factor in the comfort we associate with these shows comes from their inherent formula, one that “is comforting because you know the story. It’s the same reason kids watch the same things over and over and over again, because they know what to expect out of it.”

That basic formula is something University of Florida professor Dr. Andrew Selepak describes in terms those aforementioned kids can understand: “We like the fact that within an hour there’s a crime, and by the end they catch the criminal. The bad guys usually get caught and the good guys win. The classic white hat cowboy defeats the black hat cowboy. That, in a way, is comforting — as opposed to real life, where the majority of murders in a city like Chicago don’t even get solved.”

A show like SVU goes beyond that bad-guy-good-guy narrative as well, as the rhythms of the investigation — a crime is committed, the cops investigate, a suspect is identified, “dun dun” — remain overall very similar. Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Susan Hatters-Friedman says, “It’s comforting because we know how it’s going to end up, and you feel mastery over that.” The result is that the viewer ends up “feeling safe in this potentially traumatizing environment by watching those shows. Even though every episode is different, there is this pattern of how they’re presented.”

Dr. Sharon Lauricella is a communication and digital media studies scholar who has specifically studied the impact of watching crime procedurals on viewers, and says that 25 years ago, research in this area was largely focused on the impact of crime procedurals on the audience: “Do they make people more paranoid? Do they make people feel unsafe? And then most of the research found that it didn’t really make people feel unsafe. It didn’t give people paranoia, locking their doors, things like that. So then the focus of media research changed to, well, why do people watch these things anyway?”

In Lauricella’s research, she found that half the participants in her study population said they watched crime procedurals because of curiosity: “How do the police work? What are the steps in figuring out a crime? How does the legal system work? Things like that.”

Accordingly, there is legitimate reason to worry that people accept what they see on TV as reality. Hatters-Friedman mentions “the CSI effect,” named after the 2000-2015 series and its spinoffs, which refers to how real-life juries today “are so used to all the evidence they bring to court [on TV shows] to prove someone’s guilty. It’s all this pseudoscientific stuff — like they come back with a DNA test the next day, whereas in real life, it takes time. That’s not how the real world works.”

Along similar lines, when people watch crime procedurals, it’s not that they don’t understand it isn’t real, but Hatters-Friedman says that “they take away these lessons from it, as if this is how it is and how quickly you can solve it. Anecdotally, working in forensics, people will ask me things that are just impossible things. But they just presume it would easily happen because they saw it on TV.”

Sammy Hagar Taps Belinda Carlisle, Jerry Cantrell for Birthday Shows

Carlisle also sang her solo hit “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” and Jerry Cantrell played guitar on Alice in Chains’ “Man in the Box” at one of the Red Rocker’s birthday-bash shows in Mexico

Sammy Hagar has spent the past week gearing up to celebrate his 78th birthday with a bunch of shows at his Cabo Wabo resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He’s been joined by guests galore over the course of the shows, including a surprise appearance from Belinda Carlisle, who popped by Saturday night’s gig, Oct. 11, to perform two of her biggest songs.

First, Carlisle bounded onstage to join Hagar for a lively rendition of the Go-Go’s 1980 classic, “We Got the Beat.” Carlisle then delivered her 1987 solo hit, “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” with guitarist Steve Salas and the rest of Hagar’s backing band lending the shimmering power-pop gem a crunchier, hard rock edge.

Along with Carlisle, Hagar’s ongoing birthday bash has featured appearances from guests like Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, and Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X. Jerry Cantrell has also been a recurring guest, playing guitar on various tracks, including several Alice in Chains classics like “Rooster,” “Would?”, and “Man in the Box.”

Cantrell has also guested on renditions of Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” and a cover of the Beastie Boys’ “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)” (per Setlist.fm).

Hagar turns 78 today, Oct. 13, and he’s set to celebrate with the fourth and final show of his birthday bash. He has one more gig scheduled for 2025, a solo show Fontana Youth Music Foundation’s inaugural gala in Fontana, California. But next year the Red Rocker will return to Las Vegas for his Best of All Worlds residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, with shows scheduled in March and September.

written by jummy84

The Tamil and Telugu OTT space is buzzing with an exciting lineup of shows and films. Earlier, films such as Maharaja, Lucky Bhaskar and TEST received a lot of love and appreciation from the audience.

Following the success of these titles, Netflix today announced a lineup of six new Tamil and Telugu original films and series. From edge-of-the-seat thrillers to romantic flicks, it includes something for everyone.

Stephen, a Tamil psychological thriller film directed by Mithun and starring Gomathi Shankar, delves into the mind of a self-confessed killer being evaluated by a psychiatrist on a chilling case. The psychiatrist soon finds herself entangled in a mind-twisting mystery, as what begins as a simple evaluation becomes a descent into darkness. Next is a Telugu series Super Subbu, an offbeat comedy of errors, directed by Mallik Ram and starring Sandeep Kishan. It follows a man unexpectedly tasked with teaching sex education to members of a remote village, despite being the least qualified for the job.

There is also #Love, a Tamil series directed by Balaji Mohan and starring Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi, which offers a refreshing take on modern romance. The show explores the age-old debate as two unlikely partners embark on a unique challenge that brings them closer in unexpected ways.

Taking a heartfelt detour, Made In Korea brings a fresh cross-cultural story to Tamil cinema. Directed by Ra Karthik and starring Priyanka Mohan alongside Park Hye-Jin of Squid Game fame, the film is about a young woman whose dream trip to Korea is derailed by betrayal. Through unexpected friendships and hard lessons, she discovers hope, and herself.

Takshakudu is an upcoming Telugu folklore thriller directed by Vinod Anantoju. Anand Devarakonda stars as a blind man who, along with his loyal dog, sets out to avenge the deaths of his fellow villagers after a tragic accident.

Closing out the line-up is Legacy, a Tamil series from director Charukesh Sekar featuring a powerhouse ensemble cast: R. Madhavan, Nimisha Sajayan, Gautham Karthik, Gulshan Devaiah and Abhishek Banerjee. This gritty family gangster drama spirals into a story where high-stakes saga of succession, where saving an empire means risking everything.

From nail-biting thrillers and moving dramas to punchy comedies and tender romances, this diverse lineup showcases Tamil and Telugu cinema’s creative brilliance.

Ah, Bridgerton. It’s been over a year since we last got our fill of the romantic period drama, and needless to say, we are absolutely starving for more content. Can we at least know when Season 4 comes out, Netflix? Please and thank you!

We know that it’s likely at least a few months until Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie’s (Yerin Ha) Cinderella-esque story hits screens, so what better way to satiate ourselves in the meantime than reflecting on seasons past? It’s mean of us to make you choose, Bridgerton fans, but we’re going to ask you to pick anyway: Which Bridgerton couple so far has the best love story?

‘Yellowjackets’ Star Sammi Hanratty Tearfully Reacts To Show’s End

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

As the Yellowjackets get one step closer to being rescued, Samantha Hanratty is not quite ready to leave the wilderness.

The actress, who stars as teen Misty in the Showtime series, said she’s “in a mourning process” as she shared a video of her tearful reaction to show creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson announcing to the cast that the fourth season will be its last.

“So, as you can see, we just got the news, and it looks like all of you did too,” she started in a TikTok video. “This is gonna be the final season of Yellowjackets, and I don’t really know how to take it in. Clearly, I’m very emotional, and I know that all good things must come to an end. I’m just extremely, extremely grateful to have been a part of this show.”

Hanratty continued, “I’m kind of in a mourning process at the idea that it’s gonna be over, but I just wanna tell you all how incredibly grateful I am for this show, for the opportunity, for this incredible fanbase, and I promise you, we are going to make this last season so incredibly amazing. And I’m so excited to start working on it.”

The video came shortly after Showtime announced the final season on social media with a statement from Lyle and Nickerson.

“After three incredible seasons, and great consideration, we’re excited to announce that we will be bringing the story of Yellowjackets to its twisted conclusion in this fourth and final season,” they wrote. “We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end, and it’s our belief that our job — our responsibility — is to listen.”

The duo added, “Telling this emotional, wild, and deeply human story has been a profoundly meaningful experience and a true honor for us, and we’re so very grateful to the brilliant cast, crew and writers who have bravely gone on the journey with us to bring it to life. Most of all, we want to thank the fans who have stuck with us through every moment, mystery and meal — the Hive is nothing without you! We can’t wait to share the final chapter with you and hope you find it…delicious.”

The Season 4 writers’ room for Yellowjackets is open, with production slated to begin in 2026 for a debut on Paramount+ with Showtime later that year. Lyle and Nickerson, who are said to already have an idea about the show’s grand finale, will continue to serve as executive producers and showrunners.

EXCLUSIVE: Content Creator Vishnu Kaushal Reveals If He’ll Ever Participate In Reality Shows Like Bigg Boss, Traitors

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Vishnu Kaushal is a well known content creator, actor, and storyteller known for his witty, relatable, and heartwarming social media content that resonates with both his Gen Z and millennial audience. Kuashal – who began his career with short sketches and relatable reels, has now grown into one of the most versatile voices in India’s digital creator ecosystem.

During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Vishnu Kaushal opened up about many things, including why he choose to become a content creator and whether he’ll ever participate in reality shows like Bigg Boss, Traitors and Rise And Fall. Read on to know all his answers.

Vishnu Kaushal On Becoming A Content Creator

When asked why he decided to become a content creator instead of doing a 9-to-5 office job like many millennials, Vishnu Kaushal replied, “Choosing content creation over a traditional 9-to-5 wasn’t a decision I took lightly. It was more about the freedom to express myself and connect with an audience that resonates with my ideas. Early on, I realized the power of reliability — it’s not just about what you create, but how authentically you present it. People today seek genuine connections. Content creation allows me to do that in a way traditional job didn’t.”

Talking about how difficult it for him to find his footing in the content creation space and begin earning through the videos he created, Vishnu shared, “It wasn’t easy at all. When I first started, I was experimenting with different forms of content, trying to understand what worked and what didn’t. It took time to develop my unique style, but once I found my groove, things started to come together.”

He added, “There was a lot of trial and error, but the key was staying true to my voice. Earning from content creation was a slow and organic process. The real breakthrough came when I realized that authenticity, consistency, and understanding my audience’s needs were the pillars of success.”

Vishnu Kaushal On Doing Reality Shows Like Bigg Boss, Traitors

Over the last several years, we’ve seen many content creators venture into the reality show space with shows like Bigg Boss, Traitors and Rise And Fall. When asked if he would like to be part of such shows if an opportunity comes, Vishnu Kaushal answered, “I’ve always believed that stepping outside your comfort zone is essential for personal growth. Reality shows like Bigg Boss or Traitors have certainly become platforms where content creators can showcase different aspects of their personalities. They provide a unique opportunity to connect with a much broader audience and present an unfiltered version of oneself. So, to answer your question—I would be open to participating in a reality show if the opportunity felt right.”

He continued, “For me, the key is maintaining my authenticity. I’ve built my brand on being relatable and real with my audience, and that’s something I wouldn’t want to compromise on a reality show. I wouldn’t be interested in participating just for the sake of fame; it would have to be an experience that allows me to express my true self, without trying to fit into a narrative that doesn’t align with who I am.”

Vishnu continued, “On the flip side, I understand how intense these shows can be. They’re a huge commitment, both mentally and emotionally, and not every show might suit my style or values. If the show gives me the opportunity to showcase my true personality, have meaningful interactions, and also engage with my audience in a way that aligns with my brand, then I’d definitely be open to it. But if I felt like it would conflict with my values or the image I’ve worked hard to build, I’d respectfully pass.”

Cody Johnson Cancels Remaining 2025 Shows

by jummy84 October 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Cody Johnson is canceling his remaining 2025 shows due to a burst eardrum, which the country singer said will require surgery and “many weeks” of recovery. He was expected to perform six upcoming dates through December, with his next performance originally scheduled for Oct. 18 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, and the final 2025 date in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena on Dec. 5.

“It is with a very heavy heart I have to share the remainder of this year’s concert performances will not be able to happen. While battling a severe upper respiratory and sinus infection, I burst my ear drum. The severity of the rupture means I must undergo immediate surgery,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

He said that it will take “many weeks” for him to heal following the medical procedure. “It is not possible for me to sing during this time,” he added.

“Without the surgery my downtime could be months. I pray for full healing so I can get well and return to doing what I love,” he concluded, giving a shout-out to his fans. “Thank you COJO Nation for the love and support, now, and always.”

Johnson advised ticket holders to “Please stay tuned for an email from your ticket providers for further details.”

The news follows a recent Instagram post the singer shared from inside a recording studio. “Been working on something for y’all…” he captioned the black-and-white photo, hinting that new music was being tracked.

Trending Stories

Last fall, he told Rolling Stone about his approach to touring. “I take a very athletic standpoint toward my tours. You always want to outdo the last one, and outdo the last one after that,” he said. “But there have been so many big, significant things that have happened for us this year that it is clear the wave is starting to roll,” he says. “Now, we’ve gotta stay ahead of the wave.”

For now, he’ll be off the road through the end of the year. Currently, he has concerts planned through July 2026 according to his website, including a Stagecoach headlining appearance in April.
