Noida psychologist shares how constant screen time is causing ‘Popcorn Brain Syndrome’ in teenagers and young adults

With screen time at an all-time high, many youngsters are constantly switching between apps, videos, and games. This digital overload is affecting focus, memory, and mental health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Jaya Sukul, Clinical Psychologist and Founder of Headspace Healing, Noida, sheds light on the emerging “popcorn brain” syndrome and how it impacts young minds. (Also read: Psychiatrist shares how late-night scrolling, anxiety and stress are fueling a sleep crisis among Gen Z )

Dr Jaya Sukul explains ‘Popcorn Brain Syndrome’ and how to reclaim focus in a screen-filled world. (Freepik)

What is Popcorn Brain?

“Popcorn Brain isn’t your brain literally popping,” says Dr Sukul. “It’s the sensation of your neural circuits being overstimulated by constant digital inputs. You may find yourself jumping quickly from one thing to the next, struggling to focus, and feeling restless offline because life seems slower than your online feed.”

She explains that modern lifestyles, social media, and continuous digital exposure have reshaped brain activity. “Your brain craves novelty, and devices exploit this craving, keeping you in a state of hyper-alertness. Over time, this can drain your energy, increase stress, reduce focus, and even affect sleep,” Dr Sukul adds.

Who is affected?

While Popcorn Brain is most commonly seen in teenagers and young adults, Dr Sukul warns it is also affecting people aged 30-45. “It’s not the same as internet addiction,” she clarifies. “Internet addiction is a clinical syndrome that disrupts work, relationships, and daily life. Popcorn Brain affects your quality of life, attention, and emotional well-being, but it doesn’t necessarily ruin relationships or career performance.”

Symptoms to watch for include:

  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Difficulty focusing or paying attention
  • Feeling hyper-vigilant or stressed
  • Life offline feels dull or uninteresting
To address 'popcorn brain', Dr Sukul advises creating screen-free zones, taking breaks from devices, practising mindfulness, and consuming media intentionally.(Google Gemini)

How to ease Popcorn Brain

Dr Sukul suggests several strategies to reclaim focus and peace of mind:

1. Create screen-free zones: Designate areas in your home where phones and devices aren’t allowed.

2. Schedule device breaks: Take intentional breaks from screens to reset your brain.

3. Practice mindfulness: Meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises can help improve focus and calm overstimulation.

4. Work in focused bursts: Short periods of concentration followed by breaks enhance productivity.

5. Be intentional with media consumption: Ask yourself, “Who is in control, me or my phone?”

6. Avoid mindless scrolling: Passive browsing actively overstimulates your brain and reinforces Popcorn Brain symptoms.

“By consciously managing digital consumption and including mindfulness practices, you can reclaim your attention, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being,” Dr Sukul concludes.

Vadodara gynaecologist shares early signs of male infertility that every man should know: ‘If your sexual interest has…’

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Fertility issues can affect both men and women, but male infertility often goes unnoticed until couples struggle to conceive. Subtle changes in health or bodily functions can signal a problem. Dr Vishal Thakur, gynaecologist and centre clinical director at Indira IVF located in Vadodara, Gujarat, shares in his October 31 Instagram post the key signs of male infertility that shouldn’t be ignored. (Also read: Faridabad pulmonologist shares how to reverse lung damage from air pollution and smoking: ‘Brisk walking or exercise…’ )

Dr Thakur recommends couples trying to conceive for over a year, or six months if the woman is over 35, to consult a specialist. (Freepik)

What causes male infertility?

If you and your partner have been trying to conceive without success, it’s important to understand that infertility isn’t just a woman’s issue. “In nearly one out of every three couples, male infertility is the underlying cause,” says Dr Vishal. Unfortunately, many men tend to ignore the signs, delaying diagnosis and treatment.

Many assume infertility is mostly linked to women, but Dr Thakur points out that men’s health plays an equally crucial role. “Age, lifestyle, and overall health matter more than people realise,” he explains. “Simple factors like stress, smoking, obesity, or poor diet can affect sperm quality.”

He also debunks a common myth, that men are “always fertile.” “That’s simply not true,” he says. “Men can face hormonal imbalances, infections, or structural issues that lower fertility. The good news is, many of these problems are treatable when diagnosed early.”

Warning signs you shouldn’t ignore

Dr Thakur lists some key symptoms that could indicate male infertility:

  • Low libido: “If your sexual interest has reduced for a long time, it might signal hormonal changes or underlying health issues,” he says.
  • Difficulty maintaining erection: “Erectile problems can point toward hormonal imbalance or poor blood flow,” Dr Thakur explains.
  • Pain, swelling, or lumps in testicles: These could be a sign of varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum) or infection, both of which can interfere with sperm production.

“Men often dismiss these symptoms out of embarrassment,” he adds. “But ignoring them can delay treatment and reduce your chances of conception.”

When to seek help

Dr Thakur advises that if a couple has been trying for over a year without success, or six months if the woman is over 35, both partners should consult a specialist. “Infertility isn’t a reflection of masculinity,” he says. “It’s a medical condition, and the sooner it’s addressed, the better the outcomes.”

By recognising early signs and seeking timely help, couples can improve their chances of conceiving and remove the stigma that still surrounds male infertility.

Varun Tej celebrated his second anniversary with wife Lavanya Tripathi on November 1 and shared unseen romantic pics.

Telugu actors Varun Tej and Lavanya Tripathi, one of the most adored couples in the South film industry, celebrated their second wedding anniversary on November 1. The couple marked the special day with a glimpse into their happy family life. Varun took to Instagram to share unseen romantic photos with Lavanya, but it was their picture with their baby boy, Vaayuv Tej, that truly stole hearts online.

Varun Tej wishes wife Lavanya on second anniversary with a cute post.

Varun Tej’s sweet post for Lavanya Tripathi on wedding anniversary

On Saturday, Varun shared a carousel of pictures featuring moments of love and laughter with his wife. In one frame, the actor is seen planting a kiss on Lavanya, who looked radiant in a long flowing gown. Another shot captured the couple sharing a hearty laugh, perfectly reflecting their easy chemistry. But it was the final picture that melted hearts — Lavanya is seen resting her head on their little one while Varun leans on her, forming a sweet family chain. Their son’s face was hidden with a giant red heart emoji, but the affection in the photo spoke volumes.

Sharing the pictures, Varun penned a heartfelt note that read, “Happy anniversary, love! You make everything better, every moment, every day. I’m so lucky to have found you!”

Varun’s cousin, actor Sai Durgha Tej, dropped a sweet comment that read, “Happiest two for the cool couple who are going to be the coolest parents.” Fans flooded the comments section with love. One wrote, “So cute,” while another said, “The last pic is love.” Others couldn’t help but request a face reveal of baby Vaayuv.

About Varun Tej and Lavanya Tripathi’s relationship

Varun and Lavanya first met during the filming of their 2017 movie Mister and are said to have developed a strong friendship that eventually blossomed into love. The duo reunited in Antariksham 9000 KMPH in 2018, further fuelling rumours about their relationship. After years of speculation, they got engaged in Hyderabad in 2023 and tied the knot later that year in a picturesque wedding in Tuscany, Italy. In May 2025, they announced that they were expecting their first child, and in September, they welcomed their baby boy, Vaayuv.

Faridabad pulmonologist shares how to reverse lung damage from air pollution and smoking: ‘Brisk walking or exercise…’

Our lungs are among the most vital organs, silently working to keep us alive. But exposure to tobacco smoke, air pollution, and harmful occupational substances can cause serious, sometimes irreversible damage. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Gurmeet Singh Chabbra, Director, Pulmonology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad, explains how these factors harm our lungs and what steps can help reverse or reduce the damage. (Also read: Orthopaedic surgeon shares 8 everyday habits that put your lungs, heart and other organs at risk: ‘Loud music…’ )

Dr Chabbra shares tips to improve lung health and reduce damage from smoking and pollution. ((Shutterstock))

How smoking and pollution affect your lungs

“At birth, our lungs are pink and healthy,” says Dr Chabbra. “However, prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollutants deposits toxins in the lungs, leading to chronic respiratory diseases and increasing the risk of lung cancer.”

He adds, “Smoking damages airways and alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs. This causes swelling, reduces oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange, and leads to breathlessness over time. It also affects blood vessels, contributing to heart attacks, strokes, and other systemic health problems.”

Even non-smokers aren’t safe. “Living in highly polluted areas can be equivalent to smoking 20–30 cigarettes a day,” Dr Chabbra warns. “Airborne toxins accelerate lung ageing, increase the risk of COPD, and may lead to lung cancer over time.”

Dr. Chabbra emphasises the importance of reducing exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution for lung health.(Pixabay)
Dr. Chabbra emphasises the importance of reducing exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution for lung health.(Pixabay)

Common causes of lung damage

Dr Chabbra highlights key contributors:

  • Tobacco smoke: Contains thousands of harmful chemicals, causing DNA damage.
  • Air pollution: Vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, and cooking fuels emit particles that penetrate lung tissue.
  • Occupational exposure: Asbestos, silica, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) increase risk in industrial workers.

“Reducing exposure to these major causes is essential for lung health,” he says.

Tips to help recover lung health

While some damage may be permanent, Dr Chabbra explains that certain lifestyle changes can help restore lung function and prevent further damage:

1. Quit smoking immediately – the first and most crucial step.

2. Exercise regularly – brisk walking or light aerobic activity helps clear mucus and boost lung capacity.

3. Improve indoor air quality – use HEPA air purifiers, proper ventilation, and avoid exposure during peak pollution hours.

4. Eat a nutritious, antioxidant-rich diet – fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, beetroot, garlic, and green tea help tissue repair.

5. Stay hydrated – adequate water intake helps thin mucus and flush toxins.

6. Practice breathing exercises or yoga – techniques like Pranayama strengthen lungs and improve efficiency.

7. Vaccination – flu and pneumonia shots protect against infections that could further harm the lungs.

8. Regular health check-ups – especially for those over 40 or with a smoking history. Low-dose CT scans can detect early-stage lung cancer or other illnesses.

“In severe cases, a lung transplant may be the only option,” notes Dr Chabbra. “But early detection and proper care can significantly improve quality of life.”

Preventing further damage

“Air pollution and smoking cause persistent damage,” Dr Chabbra emphasises. “The only way to protect your lungs is to quit smoking and minimise exposure to harmful pollutants.”

He adds practical tips for everyday protection:

  • Wear a properly fitted N95 mask in high-pollution areas.
  • Use air purifiers with HEPA filters indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
  • Avoid biomass fuels like wood, coal, cow dung, or kerosene in poorly ventilated spaces.

The role of diet, exercise and hydration

“Eating antioxidant-rich foods, practising yoga, exercising regularly, and staying hydrated all support lung health,” says Dr Chabbra. “Hydration keeps mucus thin, making it easier to expel toxins and improving overall respiratory efficiency.”

By following these steps consistently, lung health can improve, breathlessness can be reduced, and the risk of further complications can be minimised.

Neurosurgeon with 33 years of experience shares 4 reasons why you should give up the habit of complaining

Neurosurgeon with 33 years of experience shares 4 reasons why you should give up the habit of complaining

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Do you crib often? Complaining about little things that don’t go your way. You may think, after all, what’s wrong about blowing off some steam? Whether it is traffic or latest situationship ghosting you, venting it out feels like a release. But going on and keep ranting about them again and again, over time, may make you lean towards pessimism more, and train your brain to stay unhappy.

Change your habit of complaining; otherwise, your perception changes for the worse. (Picture credit: Freepik)

ALSO READ: Neurosurgeon with 33 years of experience explains why you can’t sleep even when tired, shares 4 tips to rest better

Dr Prashant Katakol, a neurosurgeon with over 33 years of experience, shared in an Instagram video, posted on October 30, about why one shouldn’t complain all the time, suggesting reasons based in neuroscience.

1. Rewiring the brain for misery

“When you are complaining, you are rewiring your brain for misery,” Dr Katakol said. Neuroplasticity ensures that every complaint strengthens pessimism in you. Soon, good things stop getting even registered.”

This means when you keep complaining, pushing a tunnel vision on negative things, then your brain starts to get used to it. Neurplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt, strengthens those negative thought patterns. Then, over time, it becomes second nature for the brain to spot the problems first, rather than feeling grateful or noticing good things.

2. Flooding body with stress hormones

When you complain, you put your body in a state of stress, activating all the stress hormones. Prolonged state of stress negatively affects both the physiological and psychological systems.

The neurosurgeon stressed,“Number two, you flood your body with stress hormones by complaining. This wrecks your mood, your focus and your immunity.”

In other words, even for trivial matters, when you complain, your body reacts as if you are under threat, releasing cortisol.

3. Starts to see only problems, not possibilities

Complaining all the time gives way to a cynical attitude where you keep expecting the worst outcomes and disasters. Dr Katakol said, “The brain trains itself to see only problems and not possibilities.”

When you regularly complain, the thinking patterns shift. You focus on what’s wrong and internalise a negative perception. Soon, what happens is you stop noticing the solutions, opportunities or silver lining as your entire focus is on the problem: why it happened rather than how it can be solved.

4. Shrinks brain

Turns out it also physically changes the shape of the brain? Dr Katakol added, “Chronic negativity shrinks the hippocampal cortex. The consequences are slower learning, weaker memory and less resilience.”

Solution

What is the way forward? According to the neurosurgeon, one needs to start ‘labelling’ it. “Practice awareness. When you notice yourself complaining, label it out loud, that I am complaining. This single act will drastically reduce your habit. Lesser the complaining, greater is the joy, it is as simple as that,” he said.

This means when one starts complaining, they don’t even realise that they are complaining. Chronic complaining becomes an instinct. But awareness helps you to respond with a more logical approach rather than irritation. Instead of being quick to express frustration, consider calling yourself out, which would help to interrupt the pessimistic loop you may fall into. Instead of getting irritated over it, reconsider if it’s actually worth losing your cool over it.

Fortis orthopaedic surgeon shares 4 ways older adults can protect their shoulders: ‘Do low-impact activities such as…’

by jummy84 October 31, 2025

With age, the bones grow old, and movements become challenging. The joints, in particular, are responsible for all the movements, both big and small. But as one grows old, the once easy motion may feel painful. Out of all the joints, there’s one joint that doesn’t get as much attention as the knee or hip joint.

The shoulder is one of the most affected joints among older adults. (Picture credit: Freepik)

ALSO READ: Orthopaedic surgeon shares 5 tips to protect spine if you have a desk job: Don’t sit cross-legged, get up every 45 min

Dr Manit Arora, orthopaedics and sports medicine surgeon at Fortis Hospital in Mohali, shared with HT Lifestyle that the shoulder joint is one of the most vulnerable joints.“The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, which makes it prone to wear and tear”, Dr Arora explained.

Movements become severely limited, reducing one’s ability to move independently. Even small tasks start to feel overwhelming. He added, “Ignoring the shoulder joint and its associated issues can make even simple tasks, like dressing, cooking, or reaching for objects, difficult.”

That’s why your shoulder joints require as much attention as your knee or hip joints. Including simple exercises that strengthen and stretch the shoulders can help improve flexibility, prevent stiffness and keep you independent as you grow older.

Dr Arora listed these 4 things older adults need to do, from which exercises they can incorporate in their routine to what they should avoid:

Improve your shoulder joints by adhering to these. (Picture credit: Made with Chat GPT )

1. Gentle stretches

  • During your daily walks, include gentle stretches and strengthening exercises, such as arm raises or resistance band pulls.
  • They can help keep your shoulders flexible and strong.

2. Watch posture

  • Maintain good posture while sitting and standing.
  • They prevent extra strain on the shoulder joints.

3. Stay active, safely

  • Do low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or yoga.
  • They keep overall mobility intact while being gentle on the shoulders.

4. Avoid repetitive overhead movements

  • Lifting heavy objects or repeated overhead motions can increase the risk of injury.
  • Reorganise your home so daily necessities are within reach, or ask for help with heavier tasks.

Your shoulders take care of most of the upper body movements, from lifting to pulling. As the doctor revealed earlier that it is the most mobile; stiffness can show up in the shoulders. However, with a little daily care, from limiting certain types of movements or adding gentle exercises, you can safeguard your shoulder joints and prevent long-term pain and restricted mobility.

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Elaine Hendrix Shares Injury Update & Future In ABC Competition

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Elaine Hendrix was forced out of her appearance on Dancing with the Stars this past week due to an injury.

The Parent Trap alum and her partner, Alan Bersten, did not perform during the Halloween special following the incident. In a new video shared on social media, Hendrix gave an update on her health.

“I am starting pain management today,” Hendrix said in a post on Instagram. “I’m not dancing today, I’m not dancing tomorrow. We’ll be back at it Friday.”

As for her future in the ABC dancing competition, Hendrix said, “I’m just getting ready to be in that ballroom next Tuesday.”

Hendrix’s post on Instagram also included a message to fans and everyone who has reached out to her for their support following the injury.

“THANK YOU for every message, vote, and word of encouragement. We couldn’t do this without you,” read the caption of the post. “The hardest part of yesterday was not being able to show you just how incredible our piece could have been. Here’s my costume, hair, and the overall inspo we had planned for last night. The DWTS creative team is THE BEST!”

Hendrix seemingly has no intentions of leaving the competition as long as she is still able to perform. Although she did not dance in the latest show, Hendrix was still judged for the Argentine tango she performed during Tuesday’s rehearsal before she had to be carried off on a stretcher.

In a video she shared online from a hospital bed following the injury, Hendrix said, “Halloween is my favorite, and I’m devastated. I was beyond excited to share what we had worked so hard on, although you’ll see a version of it. With your support, I’ll be back in the ballroom next week. I want nothing more.”
