Dr Sethi titled his September 17 Instagram post, ‘4 simple things to improve your gut health ASAP (as soon as possible),’ and wrote in his caption: “Your gut health impacts digestion, energy, and even your immune system. These 4 tips are science-backed, easy to follow, and make a BIG difference.”

According to Dr Sethi, prebiotics serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria, promoting a healthy gut microbiome, while probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut, enhancing digestion and immunity. He added that a high-fibre diet supports gut health, satiety, and overall well-being. Dr Sethi further shared that adequate hydration was crucial for fibre absorption and gut function.

1. Eat more prebiotic foods

In the video he posted, Dr Sethi said: “First, eat more prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, and asparagus. Prebiotics are the food for our gut bacteria.”

2. Include probiotic-rich foods

“Second, eat more probiotic-rich foods. For example, yoghurt, dahi, kaffir, kombucha, kimchi, and idli,” he added.

3. Consume high-fibre foods

Dr Sethi said, “Third, eat more high-fibre foods. For example, chia seeds, berries, and oatmeal. These are all high in fibre. People who eat more fibre, live longer and have less acid reflux and less constipation. Aim for 30 grams of fibre daily.”

4. Drink more water

He concluded: “And fourth, increase your water intake. Fibre and water go hand in hand. Fibre absorbs water. Aim for around 8 glasses of water daily.”

Fitness coach says ‘walking is the most underrated fat loss tool’; shares 7 cheat codes to help you burn more calories

Walking is something most of us do every day, whether for fitness, commuting, or just clearing our heads. But what if this simple activity could actually help you burn more fat and even add years to your life? Fitness coach Dan Go shares in his September 16 Instagram post 7 cheat codes to make your walks smarter and more effective. (Also read: Fitness coach says ‘walk like your life depends on it’, shares 10 rules to melt belly fat and get lean by New Year )

Simple walking routines can significantly improve fat loss and energy levels. (Pexels)

Let’s take a look at his recommendations:

1. Japanese interval walking

Alternate 3 minutes fast with 3 minutes slow for 30 minutes. Studies show this burns more fat, lowers blood pressure, and improves VO2 max better than steady walking.

2. Incline walking

A 5% grade can boost calorie burn by nearly 50%, while a 10% grade can double it. Plus, walking uphill puts less stress on the knees since your hips and glutes take more load.

3. Walk after meals

Just 2–5 minutes of walking after eating can blunt glucose spikes by around 30%. This means fewer cravings, steadier energy, and less fat storage.

4. Fasted morning walk

Walking before breakfast, when insulin is low, encourages your body to tap into fat for fuel. Doing it outside also helps set your circadian rhythm and energises you for the day.

5. Under-the-desk treadmill

Perfect for busy schedules, pair a standing desk with an under-the-desk treadmill to sneak in steps while working. Walking meetings or voice-to-text apps can make multitasking easy.

6. Pyramid walking intervals

Burn fat while building endurance: Warm up for 5 minutes easy, then increase speed and incline slightly every 10 minutes. Finish with 4 minutes at your toughest pace, then cool down.

7. Rucking

Add 5–10% of your body weight to a backpack during your walk. This increases calorie burn and strengthens your legs, core, and bones at the same time.

“Walking is the most underrated fat-loss tool, where small tweaks can equal massive results,” says Dan.

Oncologist says ‘persistent back pain’ can be early warning sign of lung cancer; shares when you should worry

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints and is usually linked to strain, poor posture, or lifestyle habits. However, experts caution that in some cases, it could point to something more serious. HT Lifestyle has reached out to experts to know the possible hidden causes of persistent back pain, including when it may signal underlying conditions such as lung cancer. (Also read: Oncologist says ‘men over 50’ should never ignore these early warning signs of prostate cancer )

Persistent back pain? It could be a sign of lung cancer, experts warn. (Shutterstock)

Back pain and lung cancer: When to worry

“Back pain is a day-to-day complaint often invariably linked to heavy lifting, posture issues or ageing, mattress issues, which are usually relieved with OTC pain killers, muscle relaxants, but when it persists, then you need to think. It can be an early indicator of cancer. Lung cancer is a disease characterised by uncontrolled, unregulated, unchecked growth of cells in the lungs, which might spread to other parts of the body, including the axial system (spine, pelvis and other bones), causing back pain,” says Dr. Sunny Jain, Sr. Consultant and HOD, Oncology, Accord Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad NCR.

As per a 2024 study by H. Haryati et al., in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 30–40% of patients develop bone metastases, with vertebral involvement being among the most common, often leading to spinal cord compression. Research suggests that lung cancer accounts for about 15% of all cases of cancer-related cord compression. Pain is also a frequent complaint among lung cancer patients.

For instance, a Canadian study involving over 13,000 stage IV NSCLC patients reported pain in approximately 68.5% of cases. Similarly, another study that enrolled 533 lung cancer patients found that nearly 240 patients (45%) experienced pain during the course of their disease.

Warning signs that should not be ignored

According to Dr. Sunny, here’s when you should worry:

• If you have constant, deep, and worsening pain at night or during rest that is not relieved by routine treatments like physiotherapy or painkillers.

• If the pain is accompanied by other warning signs of lung cancer, such as chronic cough, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, breathlessness, or coughing up blood.

Early diagnosis of lung cancer can greatly improve outcomes. As the saying goes, “Eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know.” So, keep your eyes and mind open, stay informed, stay fit, and don’t hesitate to see your doctor if needed.

How lung cancer can cause back pain

“When lung cancers grow, they sometimes invade nearby structures or spread to the bones, especially the spine,” explains Dr Kamran Ali, Principal Consultant, Lung Transplant and Thoracic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi.

“Tumours can irritate nerves, compress vertebrae, or put pressure on ribs. Pancoast tumours near the lung apex may affect nerves running through the shoulder and upper back, causing pain. Once cancer reaches the bones, the pain may worsen at night, resist painkillers, and progressively increase,” Dr Kamran.

While most back pain is harmless, you should seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Pain that is persistent, lasting more than a few weeks, especially new or worsening upper back pain.
  • Pain that doesn’t improve with rest, physiotherapy, or usual care.
  • Pain with other lung cancer warning signs — chronic cough, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue.
  • Shoulder pain, hoarseness, arm swelling or numbness, which may indicate tumour involvement of nerves.

Unfortunately, lung cancer is often diagnosed late in India, when treatment options are limited and outcomes poorer. Early diagnosis can allow for surgery, targeted therapies, and better survival rates.

As Dr Sunny points out, “Eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know. Awareness about less obvious symptoms like back pain can make the difference.”

If you or someone you know has persistent back pain combined with respiratory symptoms or unexplained weight loss, don’t ignore it. Consult a doctor for:

  • A detailed history and physical examination
  • Imaging tests (X-ray, CT scan, MRI)
  • Bone scan if required

“Early evaluation helps rule out serious causes and ensures timely treatment if needed. Back pain is rarely a sign of lung cancer in its early stages. But when it follows certain patterns, persistent, unexplained, and accompanied by other warning signs, it must not be dismissed as “just ageing” or “work strain.” Staying attentive, asking the right questions, and seeking timely care can make all the difference,” concludes Dr Sunny.

Dietitian shares 5 diabetes-friendly food swaps that actually work: ‘Swap sugary drinks for infused water’

Dietitian shares 5 diabetes-friendly food swaps that actually work: ‘Swap sugary drinks for infused water’

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Managing diabetes comes with mindful dietary and lifestyle changes, but that does not mean giving up on all our favourite foods. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Archana Batra, dietitian said, “It means making smart, delicious swaps that help stabilise blood sugar and improve overall health. These simple changes focus on reducing refined carbohydrates and added sugars while increasing fibre, protein, and healthy fats.” Also read | Diabetologist shares 7 diet tips to keep diabetes, hypertension at bay: ‘Have more protein’

Manage diabetes with these simple tricks.(Pexels)

1. Swap white grains for whole grains:

Instead of white rice, white bread, or regular pasta, choose their whole-grain counterparts like brown rice, quinoa, whole-wheat bread, or millets. The fibre in whole grains slows down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes. This swap helps you feel fuller for longer and provides essential nutrients.

2. Swap sugary drinks for infused water:

Sugary sodas, juices, and sweetened teas are major culprits behind blood sugar fluctuations. A single glass can contain a massive amount of added sugar. Instead, swap these for water infused with fresh fruits like lemon, berries, or cucumber, or choose unsweetened teas. This provides flavour without the dangerous sugar load. Also, swap fruit juice for whole fruit. Fruit juice has a concentrated sugar content with none of the fibre of whole fruit. That fibre is what slows down sugar absorption. Opt for a whole apple, an orange, or a handful of berries instead. This gives you the full nutritional benefit, including the fibre, making it a much better choice for managing your glucose levels. Also read | World Diabetes Day 2022: Diet plan for diabetic patients to maintain blood sugar

3. Swap starchy vegetables for non-starchy vegetables:

While all vegetables are healthy, starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn have a greater impact on blood sugar. Swap these out for a greater portion of non-starchy vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, or bell peppers. These are low in carbs, high in fibre, and packed with vitamins, making them excellent for a diabetes-friendly diet.

4. Swap processed snacks for nuts and seeds:

Reaching for a bag of chips or crackers can lead to blood sugar swings. Instead, prepare a small handful of nuts (almonds, walnuts) or seeds (chia, flax). These snacks are rich in protein, healthy fats, and fibre, all of which contribute to satiety and help maintain stable blood sugar levels.

5. Swap tea-time snacks like chips and cookies with protein and fibre-rich options:

Instead of reaching for fried chips or sugary cookies, try healthier snacks like carrot and cucumber sticks with hummus, sprouts and pomegranate chaat, or kala chana chaat. These are loaded with fibre, protein, and essential nutrients that keep you full longer and help regulate blood sugar levels. Can young girls get PCOS before first period? Gynaecologist shares 4 early signs parents should watch for

by jummy84 September 17, 2025

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is a hormonal disorder, shows up in women of menstruating age. But can the signs occur even before a girl gets her first period? To confirm this, HT Lifestyle reached out to an expert.

Some risk factors make little girls more vulnerable to PCOS, even before their periods. (PC: Freepik)

ALSO READ: Nutritionist shares 4 tips on how women with PCOS can enjoy coffee without worsening symptoms

Consultant gynaecologist Dr Deepali Lodh, obstetrician and infertility expert at AIMS Hospital in Dombivli, shared that indeed, there’s a possibility of some early warning signs of PCOS that can appear even before their first period.

She said, “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that usually becomes more obvious after a girl starts menstruating. However, according to various studies as well, early signs may appear before the first period, often in late childhood or early puberty.”

Early signs of PCOS

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal disorders among young girls, but it can be managed with the help of a good lifestyle, like a proper diet and regular exercise, along with medical intervention. And the first step towards management begins by detecting the signs, and sometimes even before periods begin to occur, which indicates they are at high risk.

Dr Lodh shared these four signs parents need to watch out for in their daughters who are yet to begin their periods:

  1. Early puberty changes: Some girls will exhibit signs of puberty earlier than expected, such as breast development or pubic hair growth. These signs shouldn’t be ignored at all.
  2. Weight gain and obesity: Rapid weight gain, especially around the abdomen, can be a risk factor for future PCOS in girls. Don’t just attribute this weight gain to poor eating habits and the absence of exercise. It will need timely evaluation.
  3. Skin issues: Suffering from acne, oily skin, or dark patches on the neck and underarms (acanthosis nigricans) are some of the signs that a girl may have insulin resistance. This can further point out PCOS. So, stay vigilant!
  4. Excess hair growth: Unusual hair growth on the face, chest, or back (hirsutism) before menstruation can be caused by a hormonal imbalance that can be linked to PCOS.

Further, she mentioned the importance of parental intervention, as these are signs that, according to the gynaecologist, ‘cannot be ignored’, and prompt medical attention needs to be sought.

Genetic risk factor?

In addition to the visible signs, the young girl in childhood or early puberty, there’s also a genetic component to consider. Dr Lodh said, “A mother or sister with PCOS increases the chances of the child developing it later.” So if the mother or elder menstruating sibling has PCOS, they need to be more cautious, as the child is genetically predisposed to develop PCOS. This means regular monitoring of their hormonal health to reduce future risks.

To avoid these problems from escalating, Dr. Lodh recommended that young girls showing early PCOS signs focus on a healthy lifestyle, follow a nutritious diet, exercise regularly, maintain weight within a normal range, and manage stress with the help of yoga. If parents spot these signs, the gynaecologist reiterated that they should visit a doctor for tests, as, according to her, it is better to pay attention right from the beginning to prevent problems in the future.

Surgeon warns ‘stop scrolling till 2 AM’; shares how poor sleep silently harms your body in ways you never imagined

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Late-night scrolling has become a common habit in today’s digital age, but staying up till 2 AM can do more than just leave you with dark circles. Dr. Dinesh Thakur, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeon, Delhi, shares in his September 15 Instagram post how sleep deprivation affects overall health, highlighting why prioritising proper rest is essential for long-term wellbeing. (Also read: AIIMS orthopaedic surgeon lists 5 common bone and joint problems you shouldn’t ignore; shares simple management tips )

Dr. Dinesh highlights the detrimental effects of late-night habits, including weight gain, hormonal imbalance, and increased diabetes risk.(Pexels)

“All of you will NEVER sleep late again after knowing this…Sleeping late isn’t just about dark circles, it silently damages your health in ways you never imagined,” Dr. Dinesh wrote in the caption. Let’s take a look at the ways late-night habits impact your body:

Effects of late-night scrolling on health

1. Weight gain: Staying up late disrupts hunger hormones, triggering junk food cravings and belly fat accumulation.

2. Hormonal imbalance: Poor sleep slows metabolism and raises stress hormones like cortisol.

3. Diabetes risk: Irregular sleep affects insulin sensitivity, increasing diabetes risk.

4. Heart health: Consistently late nights elevate blood pressure and strain the heart.

5. Mental health: Anxiety, irritability, and brain fog can result from late-night habits.

6. Chronic fatigue: No amount of coffee can compensate for a lack of deep, restorative sleep.

“Stop scrolling till 2 AM. Start sleeping on time, and you’ll notice better weight control, energy, and overall health,” concludes Dr. Dinesh.

What science says

According to a June 15, 2022, study published by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, getting less than 7–8 hours of sleep per night can significantly impact various aspects of health. The study highlights that sleep deprivation can weaken the immune system, increase the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and stroke, and impair cognitive functions like attention and memory.

“They were in the water, I think maybe chest-deep at, even at that — maybe waist-deep,” Pamela explained to Robin Roberts. “There was an undertow, and my son was not an experienced swimmer. He did not know how to deal with an undertow.”

Pamela confirmed that Malcolm-Jamal’s daughter was safely onshore when the tragedy occurred.

Gynaecologist lists 3 red flags of PCOS in teens; shares tips to manage naturally

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is increasingly affecting girls as young as 13 or 14, but its early signs often resemble normal puberty changes, leading to delayed diagnosis. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Yashica Gudesar, director and unit head, obstetrician and gynaecology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka said, “Early detection and timely management can prevent long-term health consequences and help young girls lead healthy, balanced lives.” Also read | Gynaecologist shares 7 lesser-known symptoms of PCOS: Fertility problems to hair thinning

Early signs of PCOS often mimic the symptoms of puberty.(Pixabay)

Dr. Yashica Gudesar further listed the early warning signs of PCOS in young girls that parents should be aware of:

1. Watch for irregular periods

One of the first warning signs of PCOS in teens is irregular or missed periods. While some fluctuation is normal during the first couple of years after menarche, consistently skipped cycles, very heavy bleeding, or fewer than eight periods a year may signal hormonal and inflammatory imbalances that require medical attention.

2. Notice physical changes

High levels of male hormones (androgens) in PCOS frequently lead to overt physical signs like excess face or body hair, severe acne (especially along the jawline), oily skin, dandruff, and dark patches of skin on the neck or underarms. Sudden weight gain, particularly excess belly fat, without an apparent cause is another frequent sign. Also read | Doctor reveals 6 PCOS supplements that actually work and how they benefit hormonal health: Cinnamon, omega 3 and more

3. Emotional and mental health matters

PCOS doesn’t just affect the body, it can impact emotional well-being too. Symptoms might include mood swings, fatigue, anxiety, and poor sleep. Since many PCOS symptoms mimic normal teen stress, they might be downplayed and go unnoticed, unless parents and caregivers are observant.

Why early diagnosis is important?

“Identifying PCOS early allows for better management and helps avoid complications down the road. Importantly, PCOS is treated according to symptoms, not every girl needs medication. Proper evaluation with a gynaecologist or endocrinologist, along with blood tests and ultrasounds (if required), ensures that treatment or lifestyle guidance is tailored to individual needs,” said the doctor.

Tips to manage PCOS naturally:

He gynaecologist said, “Making lifestyle modifications is critical for teenagers with PCOS. Eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and tracking menstrual cycles can all help reduce inflammation, balance hormones, and improve overall health. Establishing these habits early builds a strong foundation for the future.” Also read | Gynaecologist lists 5 PCOS symptoms in teens that parents often overlook: Rapid weight gain, severe acne

Gynaecologist shares 8 facts about osteoporosis in women; know causes and prevention steps

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Due to loss of estrogen after menopause, women are physically at more risk of osteoporosis. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Ashwin Shetty, consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital shared a few facts about osteoporosis in women, and what causes it. Also read | Orthopaedic surgeon warns 1 in 3 women face osteoporosis fracture risk, shares 10 prevention habits: ‘Jump 30 times’

What causes osteoporosis in women?(Freepik)

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones decrease in overall mass. With the loss of mass, bones become brittle or fragile and will fracture more easily.

Osteoporosis affects both genders but women more

While individuals of all genders can develop osteoporosis, women are more at risk for significant osteoporosis after they have become post-menopausal, resulting from hormonal changes.

Here’s what you need to know about osteoporosis in women:

1. Estrogen is important for bone health

During menopause, there is a rapid decline in the amount of estrogen produced by the body. Estrogen helps to maintain normal bone density. It does this by regulating the function of the cells that resorb bone. After menopause, estrogen levels decrease, which means that bone resorption is greater than bone formation. This can lead to loss of mass very rapidly.

2. Bone loss may be severe after menopause

Women experience the loss of up to 20% of bone mass after the first 5-7 years of menopause before recovery begins. This allowed increased risk of fracture.

3. Areas of fracture risk

Post-menopausal women are at greater risk of spinal, hip, and wrist fractures as a result of bone loss. Also read | Osteoporosis: Foods for women over 30 to prevent weakening of bones

4. Risk factors other than hormones

Additional risk factors include family history, low body weight, sedentary lifestyles, low calcium and vitamin D intake, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

5. Osteoporosis is a silent disease

Osteoporosis is often not recognised until a fracture occurs; hence it is referred to as a silent disease.

6. Screening is important

Finding out that you have osteoporosis early is important. The best way to screen for osteoporosis is with a Bone Mineral Density test (DEXA scan). Women should be screened no later than age 50, or younger if they have risk factors.

7. Preventative steps can make a difference

Dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, regular weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or strength training, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol intake will all help to decrease risks.
