True Crime TV Series Casting Still Doesn’t Look Doofy Enough

It’s always Hot Ted Bundy this, Hot Ed Gein that. But why is no one talking about the entire cast of Hulu’s “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” looking a little too good?

A multi-generational dynasty of Southern corruption rooted in economic mobility and legal influence, the complex but nevertheless notorious South Carolina family made headlines in 2019 for the deadly aftermath of a drunk boating accident involving the youngest Murdaugh boy, Paul. The crash killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach, drawing attention to years of alleged Murdaugh misdeeds in a not-so-tight-knit community that ultimately witnessed, up close, what a person can do when they sail past desperation and into madness.

People have looked to violent crime as a form of entertainment for centuries, and it’s no question the twists and turns of the Murdaugh family make for great TV. Follow along with the saga, and you’ll see villains with varying degrees of culpability become surprisingly sympathetic victims. The show encompasses multiple criminal cases involving several fatalities that occurred between 2015 and 2021. Series creators Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr do a remarkable job weaving that mess of facts into a cohesive drama that gets at the heart of the Murdaughs’ power. Mostly.

What became of the four adult relatives — dad Alex (Jason Clarke), mom Maggie (Patricia Arquette), eldest Buster (Will Harrison), and youngest Paul (Johnny Berchtold) — is better left unspoiled as the streamer continues rolling out new episodes of “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” week to week.

But with a sizable audience doing research to kill time between installments, the miniseries’ cast boasts an awkward attractiveness that sticks out as oddly inauthentic. Set as an otherwise cunning docudrama, the Hollywood-coded cast continues a frustrating tradition of “disappearing” into characters for which these actors look almost too naturally famous. That gimmick can work well during awards season, but it subtly undermines what shows like “Murdaugh” do well.

No one is complaining about Patricia Arquette leading yet another true crime account for the small screen. Between “The Act” and “Escape at Dannemora,” she’s been able to adapt into any real figure she pleases, so far. But take a long look at the real Murdaughs, and you’ll be hard-pressed to argue the kind of power that fuels the “Severance” actress has much to do with this true American horror story.

That’s not a roundabout way of calling the Murdaughs ugly or implying the series’ costume, makeup, and hair departments haven’t done their best to knock the dashing Jason Clarke down a peg. Rather, these distorted portraits carry an unspoken weight that can steer grounded psychology into fantasy.

The practice dates back to 1967’s “Bonnie and Clyde,” which cast Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as lovestruck bank robbers. Their striking image has persisted for decades, inspiring everything from luxury advertisements to a Sabrina Carpenter music video with Barry Keoghan. But it’s Charlize Theron’s performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s “Monster” that most resembles the slight miscasting at work in “Murdaugh: Death in the Family.” Even rocking significant special effects makeup (just a touch of which is at work in the Hulu series), the bizarre transformation of Theron is so distracting that one could argue her physical appearance has a greater legacy than the film itself.

There’s plenty of good acting in the latest Murdaugh reimagining, but shark-like contacts and the demonstrably finicky task of making anyone look like “a ginger” detract from quieter beats. Yes, these casting directors knew the right talent to pair with this bonkers story in theory. But the optical-illusion quality, which makes you want to squint every time Clarke and Arquette pop on screen, works against the performers’ considerable efforts to vanish into their roles. Toss in the stunning Brittany Snow as an intrepid journalist (the series is adapted from reporter Mandy Matney’s podcast), and you’ve got a serious nightmare presenting a bit too glossy.

“Murdaugh: Death in the Family” is a strong docudrama despite that, but other limited series might consider going the route of Netflix’s “Adolescence” to cast unknowns more often. The result isn’t always an easier character for the actor to pull off, but removing the Hollywood hotness factor provides an opportunity for at-home audiences to fully immerse themselves in the story. Battling the temptation to pick up a second screen every time you’re watching something in your living room feels even harder when you know you’ve got the real thing and how it ends in hand.

“Murdaugh: Death in the Family” is streaming on Hulu.

Inspection Bungalow Turns Fear Into Fun in Malayalam’s First Horror Comedy Series

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Malayalam audiences are in for something refreshingly offbeat with Inspection Bungalow, a new horror comedy that dares to laugh in the dark. Premiering on November 14, the series stars actor and lyricist Shabareesh Varma as Sub-Inspector Vishnu, a small-town cop whose latest posting turns his life upside down.

When Fear Finds Its Funny Bone

Set in the sleepy village of Aravangad, the story begins with Vishnu’s reluctant transfer to an abandoned government property ominously known as the Inspection Bungalow. What seems like a simple relocation soon unravels into a nightmare of strange deaths, eerie apparitions and buried secrets that refuse to rest. When the past starts closing in, Vishnu joins hands with Mythili, a sharp-minded paranormal researcher, to piece together a mystery that is as absurd as it is terrifying.

Billed as “a chilling yet heartwarming ride,” the series promises a blend of suspense and silliness that’s rare in Malayalam entertainment. The humour sneaks in where the fear peaks, making the tension both eerie and oddly entertaining.

Laughing Through the Darkness

Director Saiju SS, who earlier helmed the thriller Ira, takes a bold leap with Inspection Bungalow, backed by writer Suneesh Varanadu. Veena Nair produces the series under her own banner, while Sudheer Surendran captures its haunting frames, Akhil Das Harippadu handles editing, and Denson Domnic scores the music and serves as the show’s creator.

The cast includes familiar Malayalam faces such as Aadhya Prasad, Senthil Krishna, Shaju Sreedhar, Jayan Cherthala, Sreejith Ravi, Balaji Sharma, and Manohari Joy, each adding shades of humour and horror to the ensemble.

Speaking about the project, Saiju says the show isn’t just about scares. “Inspection Bungalow is about how we find meaning and laughter even in fear. Every scene is built to make viewers feel something real, whether it’s amusement, tension, or empathy.”

Shabareesh Varma calls his role one of the most layered he has taken on. “Vishnu is a man caught between fear and irony, someone who finds humour in the absurd. The balance between emotion and dark comedy pushed me as a performer,” he explains.

The tone of Inspection Bungalow leans more toward the quirky and introspective than the typical horror template. It’s the kind of show where a haunted house might hold both a ghost and a punchline.

With this series, Malayalam content takes a brave step into genre-bending storytelling. It’s spooky, it’s funny, and it carries a touch of humanity that lingers after the laughs fade. Inspection Bungalow is not just a show about what goes bump in the night—it’s about how laughter sometimes becomes the only way to face what scares us most.

“What is the reason?” “This was no accident…” The Network has unveiled the first official trailer for a new murder mystery series called The Artist, ready for viewing this fall. The Network is yet another streaming platform entirely online – this one is entirely free and has nothing but original content. The Artist is a new series from the same director as The Green Veil. In the twilight of the Gilded Age, murder strikes the estate of an eccentric and failing tycoon. As he hosts the era’s biggest celebrities including Thomas Edison, Edgar Degas, and Evelyn Nesbit – lies, mystery and ambition collide as the truth is shockingly revealed. By night’s end, the mogul is found dead, igniting a historical murder mystery. Featuring an impressive, eccentric cast: Mandy Patinkin, Janet McTeer, Danny Huston, Hank Azaria, Patti Lupone, Katherine McPhee, Clark Gregg, Ever Anderson, and Zachary Quinto as attorney Delphin Delmas. This definitely looks kooky and amusing, with some additional wackiness in its story & with all these characters together. Enjoy.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Aram Rappaport’s series The Artist, direct from YouTube:

In the twilight of the Gilded Age, an ensemble of the old era’s celebrities, including Thomas Edison, Edgar Degas and Evelyn Nesbit meet for a gathering at the house of an eccentric and failing tycoon. By night’s end, the mogul is found dead, igniting a historical murder mystery. The Artist is a new series created and written and directed by filmmaker Aram Rappaport, director of the films Innocent, Summer Song, Syrup, The Crash, John Leguizamo in John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons, and “The Green Veil” series previously. It was filmed in Connecticut last year. Produced and developed by The Network – the “Always Original, Always Free” streaming service that launched in 2024. Executive produced by Aram Rappaport & Hilary Shor. The Network will release Rappaport’s murder mystery series The Artist streaming on their new platform with two portions debuting this fall – Part 1 available on November 27th, 2025 (Thanksgiving Day) then Part 2 available on December 25th, 2025 (Christmas Day) later this year. Anyone intrigued?

Foo Fighters Go Full Circle During Amazon Music Live’s Streaming Series

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s been more than 30 years since Dave Grohl formed the Foo Fighters—his chart-topping rock group, which saw the drummer take front and center stage after Nirvana, proving his chops as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. If there was any doubt that the band would continue after recent personal and line-up woes, he put them to rest last week, announcing the 12-date North American Take Cover stadium tour with Queens of the Stone Age. They also popped up recently via special small club shows in the U.S., including a recent surprise set in San Luis Obispo.

Nobody does big arena rock better than these two groups, but the Foos in-your-face energy is another beast altogether in an intimate setting. I’ve been lucky enough to see them play a couple of tiny venue shows in the past (including the Dragonfly in Hollywood and the now-shuttered Spaceland in Silver Lake) and they blended the blissfully communal experience of a big concert with a no-frills jam feel, not unlike watching your friend’s band at a backyard house party.

On October 30, Grohl and bandmates Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, llan Rubin, and Rami Jaffee (who actually is a long-time friend of mine), shared this vibe, performing inside a circle of fans and cameras for Amazon Music Live, the streamer’s post-Thursday Night Football concert series, livestreamed from a studio in Glendale, California.

On the ground and in the round, the band whipped up hit after hit in a faithful fashion that nonetheless felt fresh and maybe more ferocious than ever thanks to the wildly invigorating rhythms of Rubin, who joined the band to replace Josh Freese this past summer. Rubin, 37, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Nine Inch Nails, making him its youngest living inductee ever. Freese, who toured with FF after Taylor Hawkins died, took Rubin’s place in NIN, marking a curious musical swap. All three are/were the best beat busters in the business, but after seeing Rubin’s aggressive and giddy playing style in this up-close forum—which recalls Grohl’s Nirvana and QOTSA kit stylings—it all sort of made sense. Sometimes it’s all about chemistry, and the current line-up really has it.

The band did not play the new single, “Asking for a Friend,” which was somewhat disappointing. It would’ve been cool to see it alongside the earlier material. It also kind of felt like Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” video, which Grohl remarked mid-set after looking around. We watched from a slightly elevated platform that encircled the band and definitely thought the same thing as we sang along to all their anthems, including “All My Life,” “Times Like These,” “My Hero,” “Learn to Fly,” “This Is a Call,” “No Son of Mine,” “The Pretender,” “Best of You,” and “Monkey Wrench.”

In addition to the tour, Grohl promised more surprise small gigs to come, too. “Anyone who wants to see us rip a three-hour long show in a sweaty little club, keep your eyes peeled and come out and see us,” he said, before thanking Amazon and his fans for their support the past three decades, echoing sentiments from his recent note on the band’s Substack, Foo Fighters Field Notes. “We never say goodbye…we’re a band that’s been around so long we can’t stop playing.”Watch the Foo Fighters Amazon Music Live show—filmed in atmospheric black and white—via rebroadcast here. Tickets for the Take Cover stadium tour are on sale now.

Nick Cave’s ‘The Death of Bunny Munro’ Series Now Has a Trailer: Watch

by jummy84 November 5, 2025

Nick Cave’s bad boy Bunny comes to life for a six-part streaming series, The Death of Bunny Munro, the first trailer for which has dropped online.

BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown, House of the Dragon) takes the lead as Munro, a slippery door-to-door salesman on a road trip with his young son, played by Rafael Mathé in his television debut, following the death of his wife by suicide.

In the new clip, Bunny takes Junior on the road for a eventful sales trek around Brighton and the surrounding coast, an area familiar to Cave, the Australian-born alternative rock legend who has called the English seaside home for some decades.

“My dad,” says Bunny Junior in the trailer, “he’s the best salesman in the world.” The youngster doesn’t know the half of it.

Cuts of Jarvis Cocker’s “Black Magic,” and Cave’s “Bright Horses” soundtrack the clip, which can be seen in full below.

Following Libby’s death, Munro, a sex addicted beauty product salesman and “self-professed lothario” finds himself “saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting,” reads a plot synopsis from Sky.

“Together with nine-year-old Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across southern England as the two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways.”

First published in 2009, The Death of Bunny Munro is Cave’s second novel after And the Ass Saw the Angel from 1989.

The forthcoming series was written by BAFTA winner Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy) and directed by BAFTA-nominated Isabella Eklöf (Industry, Holiday), with an original score by Cave and his longtime collaborator Warren Ellis. Cave also serves as executive producer for the show, produced by Clerkenwell Films in association with Sky Studios.

Cave is, of course, the celebrated frontman of The Bad Seeds, and several seminal outfits including The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, Grinderman and more.

In the United Kingdom., his adopted homeland, the band has landed seven top 10 albums, including Wild God, which opened and peaked at No. 5.

Wild God, released through Cave’s own label Bad Seed, via a new, exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Play It Again Sam, an imprint of the independent [PIAS] label group, was nominated for a raft of awards, including two Grammy categories (best alternative music album and best alternative music performance), best alternative rock record at the Libera Awards and the 2024 Australian Music Prize.

Cave was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007, and has won eight ARIA Awards for his solo or group work.

The Death of Bunny Munro will air on Sky Atlantic and streaming services Now and Binge from Nov. 20.

Web Series To Explore Coming Out As A Premier League Footballer

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Gay soccer player and activist Josh Cavallo is consulting on UK short-form web series Armour about the consequences of coming out for a Premier League footballer.

To be shot in Yorkshire and Hampshire, the series from DeCantillon Films will star Jordan Luke Gage (Royal Kill List) and BIFA nominee Alexandra Burke (Curfew).

Told across 10 x 10-minute episodes, the series will follow fictional Premier League club Fountains Athletic F.C. and their rising star Harry Slade (Gage), an England international whose world is turned upside down after a risky hook-up with another man leads to his sexts falling into the hands of a tabloid. He must make a decision: risk being outed by the press, or control the narrative and tell the world on his own terms.

Since its inception 33 years ago, the Premier League has seen more than 5,000 players. Justin Fashanu is one of the only players to come out as gay in that time. The footballer did so in an interview with The Sun after learning a newspaper planned to expose him. Coming out led to significant backlash, including intense homophobic abuse and damage to his career, and he died by suicide in 1998.

Alongside Gage and Burke, the regular cast of the web series will include Aedan Duckworth (Hollyoaks), Kate James (Past Life), Alex Britt (Black Mirror) and Will FitzGerald (Upon the Edge). Filming is due to begin in spring 2026.

Show creator is Tim Reynard, who is currently studying at the National Film and Television School. The show is inspired by Reynard’s own experiences growing up as a closeted gay man with an obsession for football. Backing comes from private investors, brand product placement sponsorship, and contributions from non-profits.

Casting is by Sophie Pearson, whose credits include season three of Netflix’s Top Boy and Taika Waititi’s feature JoJo Rabbit. The writing team includes Hannah Kumari, who co-developed the character of Lorna, who becomes the first Black female manager of a men’s club, portrayed by Alexandra Burke.

Tim Reynard said: “As a Yorkshireman, football has always been in my blood. Growing up as a closeted gay man with an obsession for the game, I rarely saw myself reflected in it. With Armour, we want to tell a story that’s raw, authentic and filled with hope – not just for the queer fans craving an idol, but the young players coming up the ranks who need a role model”

Australian Josh Cavallo, who made global headlines as the first top-flight male player to ‘come out’ while still playing professionally, commented: “Coming out as a footballer showed me how powerful visibility can be, but it also reminded me how far we still have to go. I’m thrilled to be consulting on the production of Armour, helping to make sure the story feels as real and grounded as possible – both in the script and with the actors”.

He added: “With a gay showrunner leading the project, there’s a real authenticity driving it, and the fact it will be free to watch on YouTube makes it accessible to young players everywhere. There are so few role models and authentic stories to look to, and this project has the potential to change that. It feels like the right time, and the right way, to bring a story of hope and authenticity to football.”

written by jummy84

FX has ordered an untitled Snowfall spinoff set on Leon (Isaiah John) and Wanda (Gail Bean) to series.

The coming spinoff hails from Malcolm Spellman and the producers of Snowfall: Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London and Trevor Engelson. The series will stream on Hulu.

“Set in ‘90s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict strives to take West Coast rap mainstream — while gang wars erupt and record labels move to exploit hip hop culture for their own gain,” the synopsis reads.

In Snowfall, Leon and Wanda are a couple who eventually get married.

“This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” said Nick Grad, the president of FX Entertainment. “We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean and, as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. Snowfall was one of the most successful FX dramas ever and we’re excited that Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme and other veterans of the Snowfall creative team are on board.”

Bean and John will be joined on the spinoff by Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith and Simmie Sims III. The spinoff series will be produced by FX Productions.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry React to Dodgers’ World Series 2025 Win

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Meghan Markle is cheering on her home team.

The Duchess of Sussex celebrated the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2025 World Series win against the Toronto Blue Jays by sharing her enthusiastic reaction to the conclusion of game seven on social media.

In a video posted on her Instagram Stories Nov. 1, the LA native jumped and cheered in her home theater before proceeding to plant a kiss on her husband Prince Harry’s forehead. The 44-year-old then continued to revel in the Dodgers’ victory with her pal Kelly McKee Zajfen, who got out of her chair to join in on the excitement.

While Meghan—who lived in Toronto for several years while filming the legal drama Suits—was clearly thrilled by the Fall Classic’s end result, Harry appeared much more somber in the clip. As it turned out, the 41-year-old had been cheering for the Blue Jays in the all-important baseball matchup.

Limited TV Series Renewed for More: ‘Beef,’ ‘Shogun,’ etc.

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

In the television industry, limited series have a funny way of not being so limited. (Hey, semantics, right?) In fact, networks and streamers renew limited series so often, we wonder whether TV executives just use the “limited” label so they can save face if the shows aren’t successful and compete in the historically less-competitive limited Emmy categories if they are. Here are 10 examples of limited series that got the go-ahead to go past their pre-ordained endpoints.
