Sydney Sweeney ‘Great Jeans’ Ads Lifted Sales

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Clothing retailer American Eagle is thrilled with the results of its “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” marketing campaign — which became part of the national political conversation — and says it’s planning to do more with the actor later this year.

The company said Sweeney’s jean collaboration sold out within a week with some items selling out within a day. Sweeney “is a winner, and in just six weeks, the campaign has generated unprecedented new customer acquisition,” CMO Craig Brommers told analysts on the earnings call.

In after-hours trading Wednesday, American Eagle stock was up nearly 25%.

However, while the company beat Wall Street expectations for the second quarter ended Aug. 2, 2025, American Eagle’s total net revenue of $1.28 billion for the period was down 1% compared with last year and total comparable sales also decreased 1%. Operating profit was $103 million, an increase of 2% versus the year-earlier period, while diluted earnings per share came in at 45 cents, up 15%.

In another celeb tie-up, American Eagle teamed with Travis Kelce — announcing a new design collaboration with the Kansas City Chief star’s sports and lifestyle brand Tru Kolors, one day after his engagement to Taylor Swift became public.

American Eagle CEO Jay Schottenstein said in prepared remarks with the earnings release, “The fall season is off to a positive start. Fueled by stronger product offerings and the success of recent marketing campaigns with Sydney Sweeney and Travis Kelce, we have seen an uptick in customer awareness, engagement and comparable sales. We look forward to building on our progress and the continued strength of our iconic brands to drive higher profitability, long-term growth and shareholder value.”

According to American Eagle, the Sweeney and Kelce campaigns combined have generated 40 billion impressions to date.

American Eagle’s Sweeney ad campaign was meant to be a lighthearted play on words. In one of the ads, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring,” then turns to the camera and says, “My jeans are blue.” In another spot, she appears before a billboard that says, “Sydney Sweeney has great genes”; then, the billboard is shown with “genes” crossed out and replaced with “jeans.”

Some online commenters perceived a eugenicist subtext in the genes/jeans play on words — an alleged racist dog-whistle that glorifies her white heritage as a beauty ideal. Republicans pounced on the backlash as an opportunity to stir the pot.

President Donald Trump, in an Aug. 4 post on his Truth Social platform, wrote, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying of the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sydney.” Trump added: “Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.”

Earlier, Trump’s White House communications manager Steven Cheung called the controversy a prime example of “cancel culture run amok.” Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance mocked liberals for creating a hysteria around the American Eagle campaign, saying on an episode of the “Ruthless” podcast: “My political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi. That appears to be their actual strategy.” However, no prominent Democratic officials have taken a stance on the Sweeney ads.

While summer is drawing to a close, it’s nothing to be sad about—it just means the best Labor Day clothing sales of 2025 are here to help us ease into the transition. The holiday weekend’s slate of steals includes fall essentials like trendy jackets, autumnal dresses, slouchy jeans, and designer bags from some of our favorite labels. (See? It’s not just Labor Day mattress sales right now.)

Tracking down all the best clothing sales eats into your valuable poolside time, so our editors are here to bring you our must-shop finds in one place. For starters, Reformation and Everlane are currently offering up to 70% off (!!!) sitewide, while J.Crew and Madewell are coming in hot with 40% off. So yes, it’s an especially good year—there’s even a rare 15%-off discount at Free People right this minute. Now go claim the best Labor Day clothing sales before they—and summer itself—set like the fading sun.

ICYMI, Reformation is currently running an exceedingly rare sitewide sale, with discounts of up to 70% off original prices, making it one of the absolute best Labor Day sales we’ve seen in general. Don’t wait to save big on the label’s fan-favorite denim, autumn-approved dresses, and easygoing sweaters, since the deals are due to dry up soon. (Apologies in advance to your wallet.)

We can always count on Mango to have the season’s buzziest looks in stock. And now the retailer is helping shoppers scoop up many a fall fashion trend at a discount—30% off sitewide, to be exact, with code MANGO30. Not to play favorites, but this barn jacket and this studded bag are the first pieces we’d buy for a trend-forward fall wardrobe.

It’s not often that Lululemon marks down its celebrity-approved activewear. But today’s our lucky day, as the label has slashed prices on a handful of gym-bound looks, including its best-in-class leggings and cinched-waist running jackets. Visit its newly flush We Made Too Much section and you’ll be the most stylish jogger in the neighborhood.

Abercrombie’s Labor Day sale is a doozy: You’ll get $25 off purchases of $100 or more and $50 off purchases of $150 or more. There’s also an IYKYK coupon in the mix; use code KICKOFF for an extra 15% off everything, no matter how much you’re spending. We’re snapping up 65%-off shirtdresses and editor-loved Tory Burch handbags to start, then diving into more markdowns on hoodies, sneakers, and everything else. Go have some fun—because why pay full price when you don’t have to?

Zoe and Claire Long-Sleeve Belted Shirtdress

Tory Burch Romy Small Crossbody Bag

Old Navy’s current deal is almost too good to be true: The brand is offering up to half off pretty much everything at its end-of-summer sale. We’re talking versatile button-downs for $13 and trendy jeans for $40, people. (And don’t miss the back-to-school deals for the kiddos.) What are you waiting for?

Amazon isn’t just a go-to for appliances and home essentials; the mega-retailer also carries tons of trend-focused brands and beloved labels like Schutz. You can currently snag a slew of wardrobe staples at truly amazing prices; this look, for instance, would be so chic for a day in the city, no?

Per usual, J.Crew is pulling out all the stops for its Labor Day sales event: 40% off almost all the current-season styles you’ve already been wanting to buy. Start with a truly timeless midi-dress and a cropped jacket that’ll elevate all your fall looks. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

J.Crew Bridgette Lady Jacket

The annual Madewell Labor Day sale is now even better than last year’s; enjoy 30% off select styles and an extra 40% off sale items with code LONGWEEKEND. Everything (even including just-released fall tops and jackets) is 20% off over at Boden right now, and we suspect you’ll have no difficulty finding plenty of pieces to drool over. In fact, you might have a tough time editing your cart—but it’s a risk we’re willing to take. Just look at these gems.

Loft’s Labor Day deals are well underway, with full-price items now 40% off through the long weekend, plus 70% off sale styles. As for specific pieces worth snagging, we’ll never say no to cute fall dresses or a cute jacket in just the right shade of burgundy.

Net-a-Porter just quietly added a ton of designer finds to its end-of-summer sale section, and the markdowns are some of the best you’ll find on the high-end stuff you have saved to your Pinterest board. Whet your appetite with a statement blouse and some sweet Mary Jane ballet flats. (Farm Rio, Gucci, and The Row are also great deals up for grabs.)

If your fall basics collection could use some love, pop over to Levi’s. Not only will you score 30% off full-price styles, but you’ll also nab 40% off the brand’s sale section. You can’t go wrong with a bright red cardi or best-selling jeans—a perfect outfit formula, by the way.

Levi’s Supersoft Crewneck Cardigan

Levi’s Ribcage Straight Ankle Jeans

A huge swath of Shopbop’s well-curated mix of designer and high-street labels has just been marked down—so of course we’re scrolling through it all this weekend. This dress from a Taylor Swift-loved brand would pair nicely with a boho Anine Bing bag, but there are hundreds more jaw-dropping deals in store.

Simkhai Effie Bubble Minidress

Say hello to all the discounted staples you’ll need for the months ahead. Long-sleeve tees, denim dresses, chic button-downs, and of-the-moment jackets are included in Gap’s Labor Day sale, which includes near-sitewide discounts of up to 60% off.

Sales So Far Out of Venice, TIFF, and Telluride

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

While Venice and TIFF (at least this year) don’t have dedicated film markets for packages, there are still plenty of indies debuting at the festival that will have theatrical prowess or awards potential for the right buyer.

At the start of the fall film festival season, we identified 15 films that we believe could sell and tried to match them to their perfect distributors. See what else sells and how many we got right below, and on the next page, check out a full scorecard of every film acquired so far and those that came into the fests with distributors already in place.

Both the below and the final scorecard on the next page will be updated as sales come in.

AFTER THE HUNT, Julia Roberts, 2025. ph: Yannis Drakoulidis /© Amazon MGM Studios / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Ghost Elephants”
Distributor
: Nat Geo
Director: Werner Herzog
Festival: Venice Out of Competition
The latest introspective doc from the German master Werner Herzog is about elephants in the “mist-covered highlands of Angola.” Specifically Herzog is fascinated with the elusive “ghost elephants of Lisima,” potential living descendants of the largest land mammal ever recorded, whom Nat Geo’s own Steve Boyes is determined to prove actually exist.

The film netted Herzog a lifetime achievement award from Venice this year for the film that he directed, wrote, and narrated, and Nat Geo is planning a theatrical release for “Ghost Elephants” prior to it launching on Disney+ and Hulu in 2026.

“Man on the Run”
Distributor
: Amazon MGM
Director: Morgan Neville
Festival: Telluride
Though there’s no shortage of Beatles documentaries, this one about Paul McCartney follows Macca after he broke up from The Beatles and how he reinvented himself into the world’s biggest pop star yet again. Any Beatles-head like yours truly will tell you that it didn’t always go well early on and McCartney was arguably in third place behind John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band and George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” triple album full of under-appreciated bangers.

The film will be released theatrically before landing on Prime Video on February 25, and the documentary’s release will coincide with a new book by McCartney, “Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run,” releasing November 4, as well as with McCartney’s Got Back tour dates across North America.

“Palestine 36”
Distributor
: Watermelon Pictures
Director: Annemarie Jacir
Festival: TIFF Gala Presentations
Director Annemarie Jacir’s period historical drama about the occupation of Mandatory Palestine by the British is the filmmaker’s fourth film that will be submitted to the Best International Feature race at the Oscars by Palestine, and it’s also the first Arab film to land in the Gala section at TIFF.

“Scarlet”
Distributor
: Sony Pictures Classics
Director: Mamoru Hosoda
Festival: Venice Out of Competition
The anime feature from the director of “Mirai” is described as a time-bending adventure about a medieval warrior princess fighting to avenge the death of her father. SPC is releasing it for an awards-qualifying run at the end of 2025 followed by a wider release in early 2026.

Conan Gray’s latest studio album, Wishbone, bows at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, marking his first leader there. Simultaneously, the collection arrives at No. 3 on the overall Billboard 200, granting the singer-songwriter his highest-charting project yet on the latter list. Both tallies, dated Aug. 30, will be posted in full to Billboard’s website on Tuesday (Aug. 26).

Also in the top 10 of the Top Album Sales chart, Billie Eilish, Niall Horan, Maroon 5, Chevelle, Chance The Rapper and Selena all make waves.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album (TEA) units and streaming equivalent album (SEA) units.

Wishbone sold 53,000 copies in its first week (Gray’s best sales week ever) with physical purchases comprising nearly all of its sales. Vinyl sales accounted for just over 30,000 sold — Gray’s best week ever on vinyl. Wishbone also bows at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart, marking his second leader. The set’s opening-week sales were bolstered by its availability across seven CD variants (including signed editions) and seven vinyl editions (some signed).

On the Billboard 200, Gray has charted five entries overall, with three of them reaching the top 10 (Kid Crow in 2020, No. 5; Superache in 2022, No. 9 and Wishbone in 2025, No. 3). On the Top Album Sales chart, he’s also notched five entries, with four hitting the top 10 (Kid Crow, No. 2; Superache, No. 22; Found Heaven in 2024 at No. 2 and Wishbone, No. 1).

Elsewhere on the latest Top Album Sales chart, Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT surges 44-2 with 18,000 copies sold (up 988%), following the release of a one-year anniversary vinyl variant. Vinyl purchases made up nearly all of its sales for the week. (The 18,000 figure is the total sales of all the versions of the album, old and new, combined.) The anniversary edition of the vinyl was pressed on bio-vinyl dark blue and orange splatter with its cover printed on silver mirror foil board and contains a poster.

Another anniversary helps Niall Horan’s chart-topping Heartbreak Weather reenter the chart at No. 3, as a suite of five-year anniversary products help push the album back onto the ranking. Collectively, all the versions of the album, old and new, sold 12,000 copies in the tracking week (up from a negligible sum the previous week).

Heartbreak Weather was reissued for its fifth anniversary in two new vinyl variants (an opaque baby blue color variant with new cover art, and a deluxe double-LP set pressed on sea-blue and white splatter vinyl with expanded packaging and nine bonus tracks), a CD variant (with new cover artwork and eight bonus tracks) and a digital download (with eight bonus tracks).

Maroon 5 collects its eighth top 10 on the Top Album Sales chart as its latest release, Love Is Like, arrives at No. 4 with nearly 11,000 copies sold. TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s chart-topping The Star Chapter : TOGETHER climbs 7-5 (8,000, down 18%) and Chevelle nabs its sixth top 10 with the No. 6 debut of Bright as Blasphemy (nearly 7,000).

Chance The Rapper’s new studio effort Star Line starts at No. 7 with nearly 7,000 sold, scoring the third top 10 for the artist. Selena’s former No. 1 Dreaming of You reenters the chart at No. 8 with 6,000 sold (up from a negligible sum in the week previous) after a number of 30th anniversary reissue products were released. Dreaming of You was remastered for its 30th anniversary, and reissued across four vinyl variants, a CD and a digital download.

The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack climbs 15-9 on Top Album Sales with its best sales week yet (nearly 5,500 — up 3%). The album has only been available to purchase as a digital download, but will see the impact of its release on CD (on Aug. 22) in the tracking week ending Aug. 28 (as reflected on the Sept. 6-dated Top Album Sales chart).

Closing out the top 10 of the latest Top Album Sales chart is TWICE’s THIS IS FOR, which is steady at No. 10 with 5,000 sold (down 22%).
