Japan’s Animation Biz Grows 15% To Record $25BN Due To Overseas Sales

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Japan’s animation industry grew by 14.8% to hit record revenues of $25BN (JPY3.8TR) in 2024, with much of the increase coming from overseas markets, according to a report presented by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) at TIFFCOM.

The report, introduced by Megumi Onouchi, AJA committee member and CEO of Japan’s HumanMedia Inc, also showed that overseas revenue accounted for 56% of the total – or $14.25BN (JPY2.17TR) – while Japanese domestic revenues pulled in $10.97BN (JPT1.67TR) accounting for 44% of total income.

Without the overseas portion, the industry’s revenues would have been pretty much flat in 2024, compared to the previous year when domestic income came in at $10.67BN for a 49% share.

Indeed, the report, which looked back at 22 years of data, clearly showed why Japan’s entertainment industry is increasingly focused on overseas expansion. Revenues from outside Japan first overtook local sales in 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic when global streaming platforms started to accelerate distribution of Japanese anime overseas.

Local income took the lead again in 2021; was neck and neck with overseas revenue in 2022; but fell behind again in 2023 when overseas pulled in a 51% share. In 2024, the dominance of overseas revenue was clear, accounting for 56% of overall income, and is expected to keep rising.

“Overseas revenue is now climbing high and has not yet reached the peak. We believe it has potential to expand to even more markets,” said Onouchi. “We’re also seeing a rise in international events related to anime. There are currently 160 events across 50 countries, and the numbers are increasing.”

Onouchi also noted that much of the overseas revenue currently comes from licensing to streaming platforms, and that Japanese entertainment companies could see further growth by becoming more directly involved in secondary business activities in international markets, such as merchandising and events.

Japan’s government is positioning anime and related media as a core industry under its ‘New Cool Japan Strategy’, setting an ambitious target of reaching 20 trillion yen (or US$130BN) by 2033.

The TIFFCOM session during which the report was presented, ‘The Cutting Edge of Japanese Animation’s Global Expansion’, also included presentations from three leading Japanese animation studios – Bandai Namco (Gundam), Toho Global (Godzilla) and Studio4℃, about how they are taking animation properties into international markets.

Studio4℃ recently produced animated movie ChaO, which won the Jury Award in the feature films category at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Eiko Tanaka, CEO and producer at Studio4℃, explained that the film was positioned for theatrical release in international markets and has already been lined up for release in more than 20 territories.

Forestry England has launched ticket sales for this year’s Forest Live concert series, once again powered by Nuweb Group, its official ticketing technology partner.

Forest Live is a long-running outdoor music event that brings major artists to woodland venues across England.

Northern Irish rock band Snow Patrol will return to the Forest Live stage, joining UB40 as the first confirmed headliners for 2026.

Celebrating its 25 year anniversary next year, the outdoor concert series has welcomed more than two million people since their launch.

The proceeds from the events directly support conservation, reforestation, and wildlife projects.

“By attending a concert, you are also investing in the future of these incredible spaces, as the funds raised go towards preserving the nation’s forests for generations to come,” said Rhodri Jones, Forestry England’s National Events Programme Manager.

Tickets for Forest Live 2026 are available through the dedicated platform at tickets.forestryengland.uk, powered by Nuweb Group.

Since 2024, Forestry England has partnered with Nuweb Group to manage ticketing across its national programme.

The platform supports sales for both large-scale concerts and everyday forest admissions, which welcomed 285mn visits in the 2023/24 period.

Forestry England and Nuweb Group continue to deliver one of the UK’s most sustainable event experiences – where every ticket sold helps keep the nation’s forests growing.

DR Sales Boards ‘A New Kind of Wilderness’ helmer’s Latest Doc

by jummy84 October 13, 2025
written by jummy84

On the heels of “A New Kind of Wilderness,” which won the Sundance Documentary Grand Jury Prize in 2024 and sold to multiple territories such as Germany and France (ZDF/Arte) the US (POV/PBS and the UK (Met Films), DR Sales has partnered again with Norwegian filmmaker Silje Evensmo Jacobsen on her new documentary “The Mystery Package,” Variety has learnt exclusively.

The Danish documentary is being launched this week at the Cannes content market Mipcom.

“Silje Evensmo Jacobsen is a rare gem in the world of documentaries,” said DR Sales director Pernille Munk Skydsgaard. “With her ability to bridge true cinéma vérité to an artform resembling fiction, we see her as a unique director that captivates life in the exact level of her characters.

With ‘The Mystery Package”, she manages to invent a brand new genre: the Christmas adventure documentary family film.” “We claim this film to be an instant Christmas Classic that will be shown across all platforms for many many Christmases to come,” Skydsgaard commented.

“The Mystery Package” is “a story about childhood curiosity, Christmas traditions and the greatest mystery of all” life itself, with all its unexpected twists and turns,” according to DR Sales. A stranger-than-fiction-story, the core is a mysterious package that the Sandnes family from Valdal in Norway has been receiving every Christmas for the past two decades, with gifts for everyone. “Merry Christmas from all of us in Arendal,” says the handwritten message from the unknown sender.

The children in the family Edle (9) and Brage (6) decide to uncover the secret before Christmas Eve, together with their father Magnus, one of the original recipients of the package, and their mother – no less than Silje herself, the film’s director.

“What begins as a playful search soon takes a deeper turn”, says the synopsis as the young detectives discover that very first package arrived the year their father’s elder brother Hans Petter committed suicide.”Through the children’s eyes, the investigation becomes both a whimsical detective story and a tender exploration of family memory, grief and the bond that shapes us,” says the statement.

Speaking to Variety, Jacobsen said she had been playing with the idea to film this unique story of the mysterious Christmas package for a couple of years, but had been reluctant to turn the camera on her own family. Until two years ago, when her daughter said: “I’m gonna be a detective and find out who the Christmas package is from.” “Then it was very different”, said Jacobsen who was immediately drawn to the idea of following her kids in this “funny and strange” investigation and make a true Christmas film for children and their family.

“I myself didn’t know anything,” insisted the filmmaker, who agreed to step in front of the camera with her young children, and be truly part of the investigation, letting the cinéma-vérité gradually take shape. “We walked into many dead ends and of course, I didn’t know those would be dead ends, which was crucial.”

However, not to intrude too much on her family life and dynamic, she set a precise time frame to her filming. “I decided to film almost everything every day for three weeks prior to Christmas last year. By limiting myself in time, I was able to let the narrative happen in real time but also continue to be a mum, without the constant urge to film every second of the day,” she explained.

Currently in the editing room, the pic was produced by Jacobsen and Mari Bakke Riise (“A New Kind of Wilderness”) for A5 Film, in co-production with Sweden’s Ballad Film.

“I had seen their amazing film “The Gullspång Miracle” [a Tribeca winner best editing in 2023]; I felt they were great storytellers and that they would be perfect for this project,” added Jacobsen.

The documentary is scheduled to roll out early 2026.

At Mipcom, DR Sales’ doc slate also includes the festival hits “The Lives of My Father,” Best Doc Series at Canneseries 2025, “The Black Swan”, Best Doc Series at Denmark’s national Robert Awards 2025 and “Mr Nobody Against Putin,” a Sundance World Documentary Special Jury winner this year.

On the company’s drama slate is the Norwegian hospital drama “Still Breathing,” produced by leading outfit Rubicon (HBO’s “Beforeigners”) for NRK, and the Swedish legal thriller “Burden of Justice,” produced by Strive Studios (“Paradise City,” Snabba Cash”) for SVT. Both series will be delivered in 2026.

“I am looking forward to some intense days at Mipcom directly after MIA, meeting broadcasters and producers, presenting our new lineup of new drama series and documentaries. And for the first time in many years, we are also representing DRs new unscripted formats,” said Skydsgaard.

Taylor Swift ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ Album Sales; New Acoustic Tracks

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Taylor Swift‘s The Life of a Showgirl has clinched the second spot in largest domestic first-day album sales in modern history, with an opening frame of 2.7 million physical and digital copies sold. It’s the singer-songwriter’s biggest week ever.

Per Billboard, which cited data tracking firm Luminate for its figures, that number is bested only by Adele’s 25, which sold 3.378 million in traditional album sales in the same amount of time.

The 12th studio album also sets a record for most vinyl album copies sold in a single week, with 1.2 million. The last record, set by Swift in 2024 with the debut of The Tortured Poets Department, sold 859,000 copies on vinyl in the same frame.

In addition to the milestone, Swift announced today the addition of eight bonus acoustic tracks that will be spread out over four limited CD releases, which have been added to her website for the next 24 hours while supplies last.

“File this under ‘save your best for the finale’… I think my favorite moments from the tour were the acoustic surprises. So I went back into the studio with Max and Shellback to record acoustic/unplugged versions of a few of the Showgirl songs with brand new vocals and production! Cannot WAIT for you to hear,” the 14-time Grammy winner wrote on Instagram.

On The Life of a Showgirl (Alone In My Tower Acoustic Version) CD will be: “The Fate of Ophelia (Alone In My Tower Acoustic Version” and “Eldest Daughter (Now You’re Home Acoustic Version).” On The Life of a Showgirl (Dressing Room Rehearsal Version) CD will be “Wi$h Li$t (Settled Down Acoustic Version)” and “The Life of a Showgirl (Dressing Room Rehearsal Acoustic Version).” The Life of a Showgirl (Life Is A Song Acoustic Version) CD will include: “Opalite (Life Is A Song Acoustic Version)” and “Ruin the Friendship (My Advice Version).” Finally, The Life of a Showgirl (So Glamorous Cabaret Version) CD will feature: “Elizabeth Taylor (So Glamorous Cabaret Version)” and “Elizabeth Taylor (Original Songwriting Voice Memo).”
