Is joy recession proof? Only 22% would give up live entertainment if financially squeezed

New report from AEG unveils the unparalleled power of live music and events in the UK

  • 46% of live music fans prioritise spending on live entertainment even during times of economic uncertainty
  • Feelings of excitement (70%), joy (63%) and even euphoria (32%) make fans unwilling to cut live event expenditure
  • The halo effect has seen one in two fans make a purchase decision based on a brand’s association with a live music event
  • Consumer attention at live events greater than when speaking with family and friends

As a nation of live entertainment fanatics1, nearly half (46%) of live music fans2 prioritise spending on live entertainment, even during times of economic uncertainty. Consumers are unwilling to forgo opportunities to feel positive emotions, like joy and excitement, and make lasting memories.

According to The Live Effect – a new report from AEG Global Partnerships, the sponsorship arm of the world leader in live sport and entertainment, which investigates the power of live music for consumers and brands in the UK – only one in five (22%) would cut live entertainment if they needed to reduce their spending due to financial pressures. Consumers are more likely to cut spending on luxury grocery items (41%), dining out (31%), fitness memberships (30%) and even international holidays (30%) to hold onto live experiences.

Among dedicated live music fans, who have attended at least six shows in the past three years, only 16% would give up live entertainment – ranking it 13th out of 14 categories on the chopping block and highlighting the value music-loving consumers place on live events.

The feel-good factor

Strategy experts from AEG’s Global Partnerships division put the inclination to prioritise live events down to the impact of positive emotions. Anticipation builds from the moment of booking, with 59% feeling highly excited when purchasing live music tickets – second only to booking a holiday (70%).

When attending events, music fans feel excitement (70%), joy (63%) and even euphoria (32%). Many also feel a sense of freedom (35%), inspiration (35%) and nostalgia (34%). For all but 2% of fans, these feelings extend far beyond events themselves, with around one in five (22%) agreeing that the positive emotions become lasting memories.

Halo effect

Positive emotions and cherished memories ensure that live music remains a high priority despite economic instability and high inflation, but they also create a halo effect for brands who can elevate experiences. Nearly half (49%) of fans have made a purchase decision based on a brand’s association with a live entertainment event, increasing among traditionally hard-to-reach Gen Z and Millennials consumers (73% and 65% respectively).

Heightened emotions at live music events also impact attention. The Live Effect reveals that fans’ attention at live music events (rated an average of 8.10 on a scale of 1-10) is greater than when talking with family and friends (7.62), watching a movie in a theatre (7.51) or browsing social media (5.70), allowing partner brands to land messages more effectively and build deeper connections.

Seven in ten (70%) say they have felt ‘at home’ among people who understand them at a live music event, while 63% report making an immediate connection with strangers. Remarkably, half (53%) even feel more understood by fellow fans than by people in their everyday lives.

Paul Samuels, President – Global Partnerships at AEG International, said: “In times of economic instability, sometimes we need a little joy and excitement in our lives, which is why so few fans are prepared to curb their spending on live entertainment in the face of financial hardship. Brands that can elevate fans’ experiences through authentic activations can harness the halo of the positive emotions and heightened attention to shift perceptions, increase consideration, boost sales and build lasting relationships with niche or hard-to-reach groups of consumers.”

1 79% of fans agree that live music creates a sense of community that digital entertainment cannot match.

2 For the purposes of the study, live music fans were defined as consumers who have attended at least one live music event in the past three years (60%).

Sinclair and Nexstar Boycott of Jimmy Kimmel Live Ends

Sinclair and Nexstar Boycott of Jimmy Kimmel Live Ends

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

The local TV station boycott of ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live! appears to be ending.

Sinclair and Nexstar each said that they would end preemption of the late night show Friday night.

Sinclair said it made the decision after “thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders representing a wide range of perspectives.”

That said, while Sinclair appears to have been seeking notable concessions (including an ombudsman at ABC), a source says that no editorial or content concessions were made by Disney.

“In our ongoing and constructive discussions with ABC, Sinclair proposed measures to strengthen accountability, viewer feedback, and community dialogue, including a network-wide independent ombudsman,” Sinclair said in a statement. “These proposals were suggested as collaborative efforts between the ABC affiliates and the ABC network. While ABC and Disney have not yet adopted these measures, and Sinclair respects their right to make those decisions under our network affiliate agreements, we believe such measures could strengthen trust and accountability.”

Nexstar said that it made the decision after having “had discussions with executives at The Walt Disney Company and appreciate their constructive approach to addressing our concerns.”

It is not clear whether those talks will lead to anything more concrete.

“As a local broadcaster, Nexstar remains committed to protecting the First Amendment while producing and airing local and national news that is fact-based and unbiased and, above all, broadcasting content that is in the best interest of the communities we serve,” Nexstar’s statement continued. “We stand apart from cable television, monolithic streaming services, and national networks in our commitment – and obligation – to be stewards of the public airwaves and to protect and reflect the specific sensibilities of our communities. To be clear, our commitment to those principles has guided our decisions throughout this process, independent of any external influence from government agencies or individuals.”

It was pressure from the station owners Nexstar and Sinclair that initially forced Disney to take Kimmel’s show off-air, with the two companies who collectively control nearly one quarter of all ABC stations saying they were going to preempt the show in the wake of comments he made on the program.

Sinclair is the largest owner of ABC stations, with 38 spread across the country, including in major markets like Washington, D.C., and Seattle.

Disney ultimately brought back the show a few days later, saying that executives “made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.”

However, Sinclair and Nexstar said that they would not be airing Kimmel’s return Tuesday night, reiterating the concerns they had that sparked the initial suspension. The result was that Kimmel’s show was dark in cities like Washington, D.C., New Orleans and Salt Lake City, and nearly one quarter of all households across the country.

Both companies, however, noted that talks continued between them and ABC.

It is worth noting that Nexstar is in the midst of a $6.2 billion deal to acquire Tegna, a deal that if allowed to go through would make it by far the largest owner of local TV stations in the U.S. That deal requires FCC approval. Sinclair, meanwhile, has also said that it wants to engage in M&A, moves that would also require attention from the FCC.

Sinclair says that the FCC did not play a role in its decision.

“Our decision to preempt this program was independent of any government interaction or influence,” the company said. “Free speech provides broadcasters with the right to exercise judgment as to the content on their local stations. While we understand that not everyone will agree with our decisions about programming, it is simply inconsistent to champion free speech while demanding that broadcasters air specific content.”

Of course, the way consumers view their late night shows has changed. Kimmel’s monologue broke his own YouTube viewership record, underscoring that as the primary place where people were engaging with the program.

bitchy | Sinclair & Nexstar capitulated & will begin to air ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ again

by jummy84 September 29, 2025

Disney folded in less than a week when it came to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension. Part of it was the artist community openly expressing displeasure with censorship, but I believe an even bigger reason why Disney changed course was the mass-cancellation of Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN+ subscriptions. When Jimmy Kimmel Live came back on air last Tuesday, he didn’t apologize but he reiterated what he said previously about Charlie Kirk’s murder, expressing his sympathy to Kirk’s family once again. Kimmel was on a tear all week about Donald Trump though, with sharp jabs and jokes about Trump’s escalator mishap and more. Kimmel is enjoying some of the best ratings in his show’s history, which is even more remarkable when you realize that Nexstar and Sinclair were not airing JKL all of last week. The two right-wing media companies own ABC affiliates across the country, and they both threw tantrums about Kimmel’s jokes and observations. Sinclair even demanded that Kimmel donate to Kirk’s right-wing political action group. Well, funny story. Sinclair and Nexstar capitulated… to Kimmel, not Trump.

[From THR]

“…It is simply inconsistent to champion free speech while demanding that broadcasters air specific content.” The inconsistency was Sinclair and Nexstar freaking out over a perfectly accurate observation about Charlie Kirk’s alleged shooter and his politics. The inconsistency was Sinclair bizarrely demanding that a late-night talk show host apologize to Kirk’s family – apologize for what, exactly? – and donate to an ultra-right-wing political action group. Sinclair and Nexstar overplayed their hand and this is their acknowledgement of it. The FCC Chairman overplayed his hand as well, and he’s already walking back his juvenile threats too. Trump is the only one still throwing a tantrum about Kimmel, not because of anything Kimmel said about Kirk or Kirk’s shooter, but because of what Kimmel has said about Trump.

Fitness coach explains what to do if you want to live past age 90: ‘Train your legs like your life depends on it’

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Having strong legs is crucial for overall health. But did you know your leg strength can help increase life expectancy? In a September 27 Instagram video, fitness coach Dan Go spoke about the crucial connection between leg strength and longevity, explaining that developing leg muscles is the single most important action for extending lifespan and preserving brain health. Also read | Start your day with these 5 yoga asanas for strong legs

Fitness coach Dan Go highlighted the importance of leg strength for longevity and overall health. (Representative picture: Shutterstock)

Why strong legs matter

According to Dan, the thigh muscle mass inversely correlates with mortality, meaning that greater muscle in the legs substantially reduces the risk of early death. In the video he posted, Dan said: “The stronger your legs are, the longer you live. The single most important thing you can do to preserve your brain health, extend lifespan, and improve the quality of your life is strengthening and also adding muscle to your legs. While most people think the secret to living longer is in fancy supplements or fancy treatments or some futuristic breakthrough, it’s actually about not skipping leg day.”

Dan shared that strong legs function as the body’s foundation, supporting balance, preventing falls, and maintaining healthy brain and cardiovascular systems through regular movement. He said, “Your thigh muscle mass inversely correlates with mortality. This means the more muscle you carry in your legs, the lower your risk of dying early. People with stronger, larger leg muscles live longer and maintain higher levels of independence, especially as they age. This makes absolute sense because your legs are the foundation for your entire body. Strong legs don’t just help you walk, sprint, run, and jump. They help you maintain balance, prevent falls, and keeps your brain and cardiovascular systems healthy through movement.”

Simple exercises for building leg strength

Dan encouraged people to focus on consistency in simple exercises like squats and lunges, rather than complex training regimens, as the key to a longer, more independent life. According to Dan, “You don’t need to train like a powerlifter or bodybuilder or a professional athlete. Getting stronger in simple movements like the squat, the step up, the lunge, Romanian deadlifts, or even just like walking uphill make a massive difference over time. The absolute key is just inconsistency. So if you care about living longer, keeping your brain healthy, and living a life of energy and independence, especially as you get older. Never skip leg day.”

He wrote in his caption, “Want to live past 90? Train your legs like your life depends on it. Because it does. Research shows that thigh muscle mass inversely correlates with dying early. Stronger legs mean a longer life. Weaker legs predict nursing homes, falls, and dependence. My 70-year-old clients who squat regularly outperform sedentary 40-year-olds. You don’t need fancy equipment. Just squats, lunges, step-ups. Even walking uphill builds the muscle that keeps you independent. Strong legs support your brain, heart, and balance. They’re your insurance policy against ageing. Never skip leg day. Your 80-year-old self is counting on it.”

5 Albums I Can’t Live Without: X Ambassadors

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Name  X Ambassadors (Intro completed by Sam Nelson Harris)

Best known for  My moustache.

Current city  Los Angeles.

Really want to be in  A cabin in the woods learning how to be a cobbler or some shit because the entertainment industry is sooo wacky and I often wanna run away from it all. (But who am I kidding? I’d last three days out there and then come running back).

Lol Tolhurst and Robert Smith of the Cure in 1983. (Credit: Fin Costello/Redferns)

Excited about  VHS(X) 10-year anniversary tour, and then getting back to finishing up our new (5th!) album.

My current music collection has a lot of  I’ve been listening to a lot of rap (Benny the Butcher, Westside Gunn, JID), and classical (Gustav Holst’s The Planets). Just about anything that takes me as far away from the genre I tend to write in.

And a little bit of  Pop Country—A LOT of, actually. I love Ella Langley and Lainey Wilson the most right now.

Preferred format  I love the ritual of putting on a Vinyl and because most everything sounds good on Vinyl, BUT… I think right now I’m a bigger CD guy. It’s nostalgic for me as a mid-millenial and I also just love how good and consistent the quality is.

From Sam Nelson Harris (vocalist)

1

Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen

This is by far my favorite album of all time. I wasn’t really a fan of Bruce’s until I heard Atlantic City—in that instant, the second that chorus hit, everything made sense to me about him. I was immediately as hardcore, die-hard of a Springsteen fan as you could find. There’s both an uncanny poetry and a grounded realism to his writing that is so egalitarian and human. I can genuinely feel that not only is he diving deep into himself but also reaching out to all of us, trying to build some sort of bridge between us. It’s what makes him one of the greatest to ever do it, and is the blueprint for me of what a really good song / album has the power to do.

2

In Rainbows, Radiohead

There are some albums you’ll never forget where you were and how you felt listening to it. I was in my apartment in Bushwick on my computer, and somewhere, somehow, read an article about a “pay-what-you-want Radiohead album.” Like a rabid animal I raced to the website, paid $0 for it (sorry Radiohead), and started listening. “15 Step” had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, and when the riff from “Bodysnatchers” started, I remember I literally jumped up out of my seat and started yelling, “HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT!!!!” I sat and listened all the way through, then put it on my iPod, went for a long walk and listening to the whole thing again. Every year I go back and find a new song from that album to obsess over, but my favorite will always be “All I Need.” It’s Thom at his most genuine, pure, and un-obscured vocally and lyrically. I always think about the painting “Christina’s World” by Andrew Wyeth when I hear that song: “I’m in the middle of your picture / lying in the reeds.” It’s a tortured love song about an imbalanced relationship, he’s always pining for them, but they couldn’t give a shit about him. Which… I mean, I think we’ve all been there.

From Casey Harris (keyboardist)

3

Blow by Blow, Jeff Beck

I have always loved instrumental music, but this was the first album I’d ever listened to, that wasn’t a soundtrack of some kind, and was captivating from start to finish. It’s been one of my favorites ever since I discovered it at age 16. I can honestly say that it was this record which inspired me to learn to improvise and actually practice piano until I felt I could play like these guys. I’m still trying!

4

Manic Meat, Tobacco

I learned to play piano as a kid, and I was mainly a piano/organ guy for years, even into adulthood. It wasn’t until I discovered this album that I realized how much I’d been missing on the synth side of town. There are so many sonic colors on these tracks, and the whole thing in general is so unique and unlike any other music I’ve heard really. Also very cool to hear vocorder used like this, as a serious lead vocal, rather than a gimmick or effect.

The Shape of Punk to Come, Refused

I discovered this record when I was 15 and deep in the throws of my emo/screamo era. I love everything about the record. Everything about it felt next level. It was heavy, weird, experimental, and somehow still catchy. It sounded unlike anything I’d ever heard, like hardcore smashed together with noise, electronics, and these wild left turns that made no sense but worked perfectly. What really sticks with me is how far ahead of its time it was. When it dropped, it basically flopped, but now you can hear its fingerprints all over the next generation of bands. It still inspires me today because it reminds me that art can be challenging, and ahead of its time and even if the world doesn’t get it right away, it can still leave a lasting impact.

‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ to Resume Airing on Sinclair’s ABC Stations, Ending Blackout in Dozens of Cities Boost

Sinclair Broadcast Group announced it will once again carry “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on its ABC-affiliated stations, lifting a blackout that kept the show off the air in dozens of U.S. cities.

The network had previously blacked out the show even after ABC reinstated it nationally, in response to controversial remarks made by Kimmel. Sinclair said its decision to resume airing comes after engaging with local community and advertiser feedback, and reaffirming its duty to balance national programming with local interests.

In an official statement, Sinclair emphasized: “Our objective throughout this process has been to ensure that programming remains accurate and engaging for the widest possible audience.” The company noted that it must juggle responsibilities to its communities while also honoring its network obligations.

The blackout had affected major markets, including Washington, D.C. and Seattle, spotlighting tensions around media, free speech, and affiliate control.
