How to Dye Hair at Home, According to Professional Colorists

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

First of all, let’s get one thing straight: Dyeing your hair more than one or two shades lighter at home is risky business. “If you’re going for a dramatic hair transformation, it’s best to leave this to a professional,” says celebrity colorist Marie Robinson, who is famous for her impeccably beautiful platinum blondes. “Otherwise you risk seriously damaging your hair.”

However, if you’re already blonde and you want to go a little lighter, it can be achieved at home. (Brunettes and redheads, get thee to a salon!)

You’ll need:

Estimated time to complete:

Two and a half hours

Step 1

Before you do anything, follow the first three steps listed in the Allover Color section, above. Then, starting at the back of your head and working forward, apply the solution, keeping it one inch away from your roots. Massage the color in so every strand is covered.

Step 2

Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, but check the progress every five to 10. “Don’t be alarmed if you see a tinge of red; hair exposes in stages as it lightens,” says Robinson.

Step 3

After 30 minutes, apply the rest of the solution onto your roots, and wait for an additional 10 to 30 minutes, depending on how light you’re going.

Step 4

Rinse a strand above your ear and gently pull on it to make sure it doesn’t break. If it does, rinse your hair immediately and follow with a protein mask or bond repair product like Olaplex. If your hair still has a golden tint, leave the dye on for 10 more minutes, Robinson advises. If the color looks good, rinse with warm water, then shampoo your hair and condition.

What to do if you hate your new hair color

Fret not: Here are some ideas for how to fix (or at least improve) every color mishap. The things you’ll need on hand: a clarifying shampoo, a conditioning mask, and a few pantry goods.

If your hair is too dark…

“Wash it immediately,” says celebrity colorist Jennifer J. If it’s far too dark, mix a tablespoon of baking soda (which acts as a mild detergent) with a clarifying shampoo and let the solution sit on wet hair for five minutes. Or apply olive oil to damp hair, wrap it all up in a shower cap, and place a hot towel over it. “The heat opens up the cuticle just enough to let a few dye molecules slip out,” she says; follow with your regular shampoo ASAP.

If it’s too light…

You’re going to have to add more dye. For hair that’s just a little too pale, choose the next shade darker than the one you started with, and apply it only on the areas you think are too faint, Jennifer recommends. Leave the color on for half the time indicated on the box, and keep checking to make sure it doesn’t go too far. If hair is way too light, see a pro.

If it’s brassy…

You’ll need to tone down your hair’s warm tint. If you used semipermanent dye, try a lavender-hue shampoo (like Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo) for the next few days, says Robinson. If you went with a permanent formula, paint a shade that’s two tones darker just on the orangey spots. Next time, go for cooler tones with a blue base.

If it turned green from dyeing (or it was exposed to chlorine)…

Try washing the tint out with a clarifying shampoo or a deep treatment mask like Matrix Biolage HydraSource Deep Treatment Hair Mask right away. If that doesn’t do the trick, rinse hair with ketchup. The red counteracts the green, and the acidity helps neutralize the reaction. Then make sure to study up on how to protect your color before jumping into the pool.

IGK Antisocial Midnight Silk Dry Hair Mask Review

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Taking inspiration from another overnight beauty sleep MVP — silk pillowcases — IGK’s Midnight Silk version of Antisocial features extra-special packaging and a light, subtly sweet scent. Per the instructions, I tried it on clean, dry hair and brushed it throughout before securing in a loose braid – my preferred bedtime hairstyle. The next morning, I woke up with loose waves and touchably soft, smooth hair. I still had some rogue flyaways at the top — nothing I couldn’t fix with a little hairspray — and my hair looked visibly shinier and my highlights brighter, somehow. And best of all, I loved not having to rinse anything out — just spray, brush, and wake up to silky, shiny hair.

PCOS with regular periods? Gynaecologist says it’s possible; shares 7 symptoms: Hair on stomach, dark patches on neck

by jummy84 September 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is commonly associated with missed periods. Irregularity in the menstrual cycle is, in fact, regarded as one of the primary signs. But this is not always the case.

It’s not always true that PCOS happens only when you have irregular periods. (Shutterstock)

Dr Neha Abhijit Pawar, consultant, gynaecology at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, told HT Lifestyle it is possible for PCOS to be present even when periods are regular. She explained that PCOS is much more complex, and sometimes it may not reflect in the cycle.

ALSO READ: Can thin women get PCOD? Gynaecologist shares symptoms of lean PCOD: Dark skin patches, oily skin

Dr Pawar said, “PCOS is a complex hormonal and metabolic disorder in which the ovaries produce higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones) and the body may show resistance to insulin. These internal imbalances can exist even if the menstrual cycle appears to be normal.”

How can you have PCOS despite regular periods?

Even if your periods are regular, it does not mean the reproductive system is fully healthy. Revealing how ovulation may be compromised, she explained, “Ovulation occurs, but the egg quality may be poor, or ovulation may be inconsistent. This means that while bleeding happens at expected intervals, the underlying hormonal dysfunction that defines PCOS is still present.”

So it is very important not to rule out PCOS just because your periods are regular, since, as per the gyneacologist, “regular periods do not necessarily guarantee normal ovulation.”

Beyond the hidden ovulation issues, there’s also another reason why periods can appear normal in PCOS. The gynaecologist explained, “While excess androgens disrupt follicle development, estrogen and progesterone may still maintain a bleeding cycle. This ‘masking effect’ can mislead women into believing everything is normal, while the ovaries continue to show polycystic changes and the body continues to face risks like insulin resistance, weight gain, or difficulty conceiving.”

Signs of PCOS other than irregular menstrual cycle

Hormonal acnes happen in adulthood too.(Shutterstock)
Hormonal acnes happen in adulthood too.(Shutterstock)

Other than menstrual irregularity, here are the symptoms Dr Pawar shared:

  1. Excess hair growth (hirsutism) on the face, chest, or stomach.
  2. Persistent acne or oily skin that does not improve with usual treatments.
  3. Thinning hair or male-pattern baldness on the scalp.
  4. Unexplained weight gain, particularly around the waist and abdomen.
  5. Darkened patches of skin (acanthosis nigricans), often around the neck, groin, or underarms.
  6. Difficulty getting pregnant, even when cycles are regular.
  7. Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound, with multiple small follicles seen in the ovaries.

Should you visit a doctor?

With periods appearing normal, the question arises whether one should visit a doctor. Dr Pawar advised that PCOS should not be ignored, as untreated PCOS can worsen health. She said, “If you notice any of these symptoms, it is wise not to ignore them just because your menstrual cycles seem fine. PCOS, if left undiagnosed, can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, infertility, cardiovascular disease, and endometrial problems over time.”

She suggested that a gynaecologist or endocrinologist may guide with blood tests to check hormone levels, assess insulin sensitivity, and conduct an ultrasound if needed.

12 Best Hair Straighteners and Flatirons 2025, Tested & Reviewed

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

When you straighten your hair, you want the process to be as simple as possible and the result as sleek as possible. Of course, you also want to minimize any damage to your strands. T3’s Single Pass StyleMax delivers on all fronts, thanks to a unique technology that customizes the styling process for you—no fiddling with different temperatures. You simply select your hair texture and styling goals via buttons on the flatiron, then get to work—the iron will heat to one of nine temperatures selected for you.

Testing notes: “While there is a bit of a learning curve to the smart heat settings, once I figured it out, things came to temperature exceptionally quickly. I appreciated that the rounded edges allow you to both straighten and curl, but I was disappointed with the feel of the plates. The iron didn’t swipe effortlessly but rather stuttered over my hair. It did, however, do a pretty solid job in a single pass,” says Earley.

  • What we love: Affordable; lightweight; easy to handle
  • What could improve: Gets a little too hot

This affordable straightener is one of the best titanium picks on the list because it’s suitable for a variety of hair types, including curly hair. It has wide, 1.25-inch plates that catch a good amount of hair, and the temperature goes up to 440°F, which helps you achieve a smooth, frizz-free finish.

Testing notes: “As someone with extremely curly 3C hair, I found this iron to be very effective. It heats up quickly and offers three distinct heat settings. The lowest setting was my preferred choice. My hair felt smooth and manageable after use. I appreciate the sleek design and was able to utilize the three-in-one function to add some body to my hair, as I typically prefer it with volume rather than styled sleekly,” says Glamour tester Kristine Straker.

  • What we love: Nine adjustable settings make it gentle on hair; easy to use
  • What could improve: A bit pricey

If you have type 4 curls, Glamour contributor Tanisha Cherry swears by the T3 Lucea Flat Iron. This ceramic-plated pick is super gentle on hair and styles quickly, without the need for dozens of passes.

Testing Notes: “I’ve been using this pick for my silk presses for five years now, and she delivers every single time. With natural type 4 hair, I’m super picky about my heat tools. I want that bone-straight finish without compromising my curls. Depending on how well my blow-dry turns out, I don’t always need high heat, and that’s where this flatiron shines. It heats up fast and has nine adjustable heat settings, which gives me total control. What really seals the deal is that I can do just one pass on blow-dried hair and still get a straight and smooth finish. And it gets super close to my roots without burning me, which is major. I only use it on freshly washed and blow-dried hair when I’m going for a silk press, so about two to three times a month, and it never disappoints,” says Cherry.

Best Cordless Hair Straightener: Dyson Airstrait

  • What we love: Less direct and intense heat means less damage over time; wide range of styling settings and modes (wet, dry, rough-dry, smoothing boost); LCD screen; intelligent airflow; temperature control
  • What could improve: Slower process than traditional flatirons

The Glamour commerce team put the buzzy Dyson Airstrait to the test and found it to be best overall on our list. Think of it as a flatiron and blow-dryer in one. Instead of pressing your hair between hot plates, it dries strands with hot air (using the same technology as our favorite Dyson Airwrap)—which is way less damaging than your standard straightening iron.

Testing notes: “Though it’s gentle on hair, the process is a bit lengthy, since you have to first use the tool to rough-dry your roots. This is an important step, because the shape and size of the Airstrait is a bit bulky and the air shoots down toward your ends, so you can’t clamp hair all the way at the top to smooth it during the straightening process. Once I was ready to work on individual sections of hair with passes closer to that of a traditional flatiron, I found there was a bit of a learning curve to keeping hair inside of the tool. But I figured out that it helped to hold my hair, guiding it through. Even though this whole process takes a bit longer, the effort paid off. My finished style was incredibly soft and shiny, plus had impressive staying power,” says Earley.

Emmys 2025 Hair: ’20s Pixie Cuts Were All Over the Red Carpet

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Pixie cuts dominated Emmys 2025 hair trends, and it seems like the roaring ’20s revival is officially upon us. This year, lots of actors traded their long locks and volume for sculpted, close-cropped haircuts. The styling channeled major flapper vibes, and we’re here for it.

Red carpet pixie cut debuts are always a major look. Back in January, Emma Stone’s Golden Globes pixie made headlines and last night, Carrie Coon’s platinum cut generated similar buzz at last night’s Emmy Awards. There are so many ways to style the super short cut—you can spike it up, slick it back, or let some soft texture frame your face. But among last night’s unusually high volume of pixies, the vibes were undeniably 1920s-coded.

John Shearer

Quinta Brunson’s Emmys 2025 hair was a masterclass in making a hundred-year-old style feel authentic and fresh. Her short hair was heavily gelled, giving it that high-gloss finish. Brunson’s stylist Suzette Boozer added extra vintage flair with kiss curls—hand-sculpted end curls which frame the face and lay flat on the forehead. This look was a beauty hallmark of Josephine Baker and other icons of the flapper era.

‘20’s pixies aren’t the first vintage hair trend we’ve seen celebrities embrace this year: Bardot bangs and Old Hollywood bobs have also been red carpet staples recently. “With the fast pace of trends today, many are drawn to these iconic styles that evoke a sense of nostalgia and sophistication,” Helen Reavey, celebrity hairstylist, certified trichologist, and founder of of Act+Acre, previously told Glamour. “It’s versatile and polished while still standing out.”

Even if you don’t know Coree Moreno, you’ve definitely seen, saved, and screenshotted, his work. The hairstylist counts Zendaya, Cynthia Erivo, Lil Nas X, Michaela Coel, Serena Williams, and Shaboozey among his clientele, with his work often blurring the lines between coiffure and couture. (His Instagram bio reads “hair artist,” an apt descriptor of his inspired approach.) “[Growing up], I would style my sister’s Barbies and then I did my neighbor’s hair for the first time,” Moreno says of his career origin story. “I realized this is my superpower and leaned into it. From then on, it’s been an upward trajectory.”

Gynaecologist shares 10 red flags of hormonal imbalance to watch out for: Weight gain, mood swings, hair loss and more

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Hormones are chemical messengers responsible for proper functioning of the body. From menstrual cycle to metabolism to mood regulation, hormones play a significant role in each of these processes. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aruna Kalra, director, obstetrics and gynecology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram said, “When hormone levels get too high or too low, changes in your health become obvious. Identifying these early on can lead you to get timely medical attention and avoid complications.” Also read | Doctor shares 7 facts about hormonal imbalance: ‘Eating less and moving more won’t fix you’

Dr Aruna Kalra further shared 10 signs of hormonal imbalance that we should know:

1. Irregular or skipped periods

Abnormal changes in your menstrual pattern, like heavier or lighter than usual bleeding, skipped periods, or erratic timing, can indicate conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disease, or perimenopause.

2. Unexplained weight changes

Weight gain or loss that occurs without shifts in your diet or exercise habits can signal imbalances in hormones like insulin, cortisol, or thyroid hormone.

3. Persistent fatigue

Chronic exhaustion in spite of proper rest may be associated with hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, or hormonal shifts in reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.

4. Mood changes and anxiety

Sudden irritability, mood swings, or heightened anxiety can be seen when levels of estrogen and progesterone change, particularly at PMS, perimenopause, or postpartum.

5. Skin problems

Adult acne, excess oiliness, or dryness can be caused by elevated androgen levels or decreased estrogen, both of which can influence oil production and skin health. Also read | Nutritionist reveals 6 daily habits that impact your hormonal health, affect PCOD symptoms

6. Hair loss or excess hair growth

Scalp hair loss or excessive facial and body hair can be a sign of hormonal conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disorders.

7. Hot flashes and night sweats

Sudden spells of heat or sweating, especially at night, are commonly associated with low estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause.

8. Sleep disturbances

Sleeping or falling asleep might become a challenge when progesterone or estrogen levels decrease.

9. Decreased sex drive

Loss of sex drive may result from low levels of estrogen, testosterone, or thyroid hormones.
