Hair transplant surgeon explains how pollution causes hair fall and dandruff; shares tips to protect your scalp

Urbanisation is growing rapidly, and cities are bustling with energy and high-end infrastructure like never before. However, beyond the crowded roads and endless hustle of urban life exists a hidden danger that touches us all, and it is pollution.

Exposure to pollution leads to scalp and hair damage, contributing to conditions like dandruff and hair fall. (Freepik)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Gajanan Jadhao, Founder and Chief Hair Transplant Surgeon, shares his expert insights on how pollution impacts hair health and what can be done to protect it. (Also read: Dermatologist reacts to Europe’s gel nail polish ban, explains how it can trigger ‘serious skin problems’ )

How pollution silently damages skin and hair

Urban air is filled with fine dust, toxic gases, and microscopic particles that not only damage the lungs and heart but also leave a lasting imprint on the skin and hair. The face and hair, being the most exposed parts of the body, take a visible toll by losing natural radiance, weakening roots, and accelerating ageing. Many people fail to notice this until the damage becomes advanced.

Chronic conditions like eczema and acne are on the rise due to constant exposure. Even people who follow regular skincare routines often find that pollution overrides their efforts, creating a persistent cycle of irritation and breakouts. The effects on hair are equally concerning. Research shows that pollutants can directly damage the proteins and lipids that make up hair strands, leading to breakage and thinning.

The scalp suffers first, as toxins clog follicles and disrupt healthy growth. When follicles are suffocated by layers of grime, sebum, and airborne chemicals, hair becomes brittle, lifeless, and prone to falling out. This link between urban exposure and weakened hair is increasingly acknowledged in both medical research and consumer awareness.

The hidden dangers of indoor environments

Pollution also disrupts the balance of the scalp environment. Constant exposure to urban dust and toxins alters the scalp’s pH, causing dandruff, excess oil production, and sensitivity. This imbalance not only causes discomfort but also interferes with healthy hair growth. Many people experiencing unexplained hair fall or an itchy scalp are unaware that pollution is often the main underlying factor.

The sun further amplifies the damage. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation on its own accelerates skin aging, but when combined with pollutants such as ozone, it creates a more dangerous mix. UV rays intensify oxidative stress triggered by pollution, resulting in deeper wrinkles, pigmentation, and faster loss of elasticity.

For hair, the combined effect of UV exposure and airborne toxins strips away moisture and fades natural colour, leaving it dull and fragile. It is not only outdoor air that causes problems. Indoor environments can be equally harmful, though less often discussed. According to the World Health Organisation, as of 2020, nearly 3.2 million deaths annually were linked to household air pollution caused by cooking fuels and poor ventilation.

While the primary concerns are respiratory health, indoor toxins and poor air circulation also dry out the skin and scalp, making them more vulnerable to irritation and flaking. Offices with heavy air conditioning and little fresh air can produce similar effects, especially for those who spend most of their day indoors.

How to protect your skin and hair from pollution damage

In spite of these challenges, the effects can be minimised with regular protection. For the skin, daily cleansing removes dirt, dust, and toxins that settle on the surface, preventing clogged pores and keeping the skin fresh. Using antioxidant serums with vitamins C and E helps fight free radicals, which damage skin cells and accelerate ageing. Mineral sunscreens add another layer of protection against harmful UV rays and environmental toxins.

For the hair and scalp, clarifying shampoos help remove buildup from pollution and styling products. Antioxidant-rich conditioners repair and protect strands from oxidative stress, restoring shine and strength. Scalp serums strengthen follicles and protect them against damage, maintaining healthier, stronger hair.

In addition, lifestyle choices also play an important role. Diets rich in berries, leafy vegetables, nuts, and fish provide antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids that help the body fight environmental stress. Proper hydration, both internal and external, keeps the skin resilient and the scalp healthy. Including foods such as spinach, flaxseeds, and green tea in daily meals can significantly improve how the body responds to pollution over time.

Technology and innovation are also joining the fight. Skincare brands are now releasing products marketed as “anti-pollution shields,” containing ingredients that form protective barriers against particulate matter. Haircare is evolving too, with scalp sprays and leave-in conditioners designed to block toxins. While these cannot completely prevent exposure, they reflect the growing recognition in the beauty industry that pollution is not just an environmental issue but also a personal health concern.

In the bigger picture of city living, pollution is an unavoidable reality. Yet, how we respond to it defines the outcome. With mindful care and conscious choices, we can safeguard not only our skin and hair but also our vitality in the demanding urban world.

The Stud Budz want to encourage women and girls to not be sidelined by their time of the month.

WNBA stars Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman have dyed their hair “period red,” showcasing their new styles on the basketball court Sept. 9 as their team faced off against the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

“Periods shouldn’t hold you back in sports. A statement we live and die by,” the duo wrote on Instagram as part of a partnership with U by Kotex. “Play on your period with U by Kotex, for powerful protection.”

Wearing a matching smock bearing the words “I play on my period,” Courtney said in the video that she agreed to partner with the menstrual hygiene brand partly because she wanted to do “anything to help women feel more comfortable.”

“Us just being on the stage that we’re on, being two Black, masculine women,” the 31-year-old added, “like that in itself is great representation.”

But it also goes further than that.

“We have mothers on our team balancing basketball and parenthood,” Courtney noted, “It definitely inspired me.”

Reports suggest that Turkey’s hair restoration industry treated a significant number of patients in 2024, with the majority coming from abroad. Leading clinics often highlight high graft survival rates, with some citing figures around one year post-procedure. Innovations such as Oxycure™ oxygen therapy, exosome‑enhanced serums, and AI‑guided incision mapping have set new standards in recovery and precision. This guide highlights ten clinics that combine surgeon‑led protocols, transparent outcomes, and evidence‑based care.

Vera Clinic (Istanbul)

Vera Clinic is often highlighted by international patients as one of the leading hair transplant providers in Turkey, introducing their innovations such as Sapphire FUE and Oxycure Therapy. Oxycure™ Therapy is a hyperbaric oxygen–based recovery protocol designed to support healing and improve graft survival following procedures. Its all‑inclusive package (€2,990) covers up to 5,000 grafts, luxury transfers, and surgeon‑led follow‑ups. Vera Clinic has treated a large number of international patients, who often cite its consistent clinical oversight as a key factor. Patients who adhere to post‑op guidelines qualify for a complimentary touch‑up within 1.5 years.

Asmed (Dr. Koray Erdoğan/ Istanbul)

Asmed is renowned for high‑density DHI and artistic hairline design under Dr. Erdoğan’s direct supervision. The clinic employs digital scalp mapping to support precise graft placement and help reduce transection rates. Pricing is €3 per graft, with typical sessions of 2,500–3,000 grafts. Independent audits have reported high levels of patient satisfaction along with relatively low revision rates.

HLC – Hairline Clinic (Ankara)

HLC limits surgeries to one per surgeon per day and uses manual FUE extraction to help reduce transection rates. Sessions cost €3 per graft, averaging 2,000–3,500 grafts. Their telehealth check-ins are designed to encourage consistent adherence to recovery protocols. HLC is often chosen by Western European patients for its focus on natural-looking outcomes and discreet service.

Dr. Muttalip Keser Clinic (Istanbul)

Dr. Keser personally performs each procedure with custom micro-punch tools, a technique intended to minimize donor trauma and support strong graft retention over time. Packages start at €8,750 for 2,500 grafts, with the clinic capping weekly cases to eight for maximal focus. Quarterly audits are published to maintain transparency. Clients praise the boutique setting’s personalized care.

Armamed (Dr. Erkan Demirsoy / Istanbul)

Armamed operates on a surgeon-only model, combining motorized FUE with manual implantation to streamline procedures while supporting graft integrity. The €5,000 all‑inclusive package includes assessment, surgery, and follow‑up. Internal records indicate a relatively low rate of revisions in 2024. Armamed’s conservative approach emphasizes safety and natural aesthetics.

Transmed Clinic (Istanbul)

Founded in 1994, Transmed combines FUE with PRP and mesotherapy, an approach intended to support graft survival and patient recovery. Their bilingual portal logs healing biomarkers via weekly photo uploads, helping to improve patient engagement. Grafts are priced at €3 each, and research partnerships enhance clinical credibility. Patient surveys reflect positive feedback on its comprehensive care.

AHD Clinic (Dr. Hakan Doğanay / Antalya)

AHD Clinic in Antalya offers LED photobiomodulation sessions, which are intended to support early follicle viability, and provides evening surgery slots to accommodate international travelers. A 3,000‑graft package costs €4,000, including accommodation and transfers. Digital follow-ups at days 7, 30, and 90 are designed to help monitor recovery and reduce the risk of complications. Its coastal setting supports a restful recovery.

CapilClinic Turkey (Istanbul & Spain)

CapilClinic’s M Pack (€2,490 for up to 1,500 grafts) includes lodging, transfers, and two years of tele‑dermatology support. The clinic uses vitamin-infused saline and gender-specific sedation, approaches intended to support patients during the early shedding phase. A unified EHR system is designed to help reduce cross-border errors and improve continuity of care. Their digital aftercare guides drive an 87% adherence to post‑op regimens.

Medicana International (Istanbul)

Medicana’s hospital‑based unit offers €3 per graft transplants alongside full anesthesia and emergency backup. Comprehensive pre-op cardiac and endocrine screenings are intended to help lower perioperative risks. The facility’s interoperable medical records are designed to streamline multidisciplinary care and support strong adherence to safety protocols. This model suits medically complex patients.

MCAN Health (Istanbul)

MCAN Health’s all‑inclusive package starts at €2,290 for 2,000 grafts, covering VR‑guided scar education, 24/7 multilingual support, and a recovery app that is designed to support patient compliance.

Their digital scheduling portal is designed to help reduce no-show rates. The clinic’s logistical precision makes it a top choice for first‑time medical tourists.

Emma Watson Shows Off Her Honey Blonde Hair in a Minidress Beloved by Taylor Swift

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Showgirls recognize showgirls. Isn’t that a saying? Anyway, Emma Watson is inching her way back into the public eye and she’s channeling a certain super star while doing it.

On September 6, the 35-year-old actor made a splash at the Venice Film Festival, appearing at the event for the first time ever. Though it’s been six years since her last big Hollywood role in Little Women, Watson looked right at home in front of the camera, waving at photographers as she stepped off the boat in a Gucci logo shift dress and a pair of classic Ray-Bans.

Of course, this comes after Watson got a bit playful with paparazzi during a recent trip to Saint-Tropez, where she made faces at photographers while hiking in a bikini, crochet cover-up, and colorful sneakers. Though we’re used to seeing the former Harry Potter star with brunette hair, she recently debuted a new blonde look that perfectly suits her summer vacation wardrobe.

Obviously, she channeled a very different vibe at the Italian film festival, though she’s still rocking warm honey blonde highlights. Her little beige shift dress, nude sling-back pumps, and Ray Bans are much closer to the classic, preppy aesthetic she’s known to favor.

Emma Watson is seen at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2025 in Venice, Italy.

JB Lacroix

In fact, she shares some sartorial instincts with another famous blonde—and while Taylor Swift certainly doesn’t own blonde hair, she does possess the exact same Gucci minidress Watson wore in Venice. Though, for her part, Watson seems to have had the $3700 dress tailored to create more of an A-line silhouette than the straight, ’60s-inspired shape of the original design.

Last September, Swift wore the GG Canvas Dress on a New York City date night with Travis Kelce, pairing the Gucci logo dress with brown leather pockets with a black horsebit bag and matching sandals by the same Italian designer.

While it’s unclear if Emma Watson was directly influenced by Swift’s pap walk, the lime green dress she changed into later that day is giving “Last Great American Dynasty” in the best way possible.

13 Best Shampoos for Curly Hair 2025, Tested on Different Curls

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Tighter curl patterns take on a spiral or “Z” shape which can cause them to look shorter when your hair is dried versus when it’s wet or stretched (so the curl looks longer). While you can manipulate natural curls to “stretch” with braids or twists, products that help define and moisturize can also assist in this department. This formula is packed with moisturizing ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, marula oil, and kalahari melon) that help coily hair feel soft to the touch, even after it’s completely dried, which helps reduce shrinkage. While this will foam up, it still provides a gentle cleanse that won’t strip your hair of its moisture. Bonus? If you love a fruity, tropical fragrance, this one will make your bathroom smell like you just left a dreamy beach vacation.

Our review: I’ve recently added this to my regular shampoo lineup and I like that my curls don’t feel like wire once I rinse it out. Instead, I get instant slip and ultra-defined coils that drink up conditioner treatments and curl creams thereafter (I love following up with a rinse-out and a leave-in conditioner after using this). I’ve also used this on type-4 hair extensions and found that it got product residue off while keeping the curl pattern defined and frizz-free. —Aimee Simeon, Glamour contributor

Best Clarifying: Olaplex No.4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo

Olapex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Shampoo (8.5 oz.)

Original photo from Francesca Simmons testing Olapex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Shampoo

  • What we love: Deep-cleans product buildup and chemical deposits; strengthens curls with patented bond-building technology
  • Worth noting: Can feel a bit strong for daily use

Clarifying shampoo should be an essential once-a-week step in your routine. It combats chemical deposits (from the swimming pool, say), product buildup, an itchy scalp, and oily hair. This stylist-favorite Olaplex shampoo works to rebuild broken bonds most often seen on split, curly ends, says Paul Labrecque, creative director and master stylist and colorist for Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa. “It also has the Olaplex patented bond-building technology, so while you’re removing minerals, you are also building a stronger structure inside the hair,” says celebrity hair colorist Bianca Hillier.

Our review: Whenever a shampoo is ‘suitable for all hair types,’ I kind of give them a side-eye, but Olaplex’s bonding shampoo really does work wonders on my 4A curls. As all curly girls know, we need shampoos that address everything, including dryness, damage, split ends, breakage, and lack of shine—and this does exactly that. It lathers easily, I don’t have to use a ton to get that super-clean feeling, and it doesn’t strip my hair or leave my scalp tight. Overall, I’ve noticed less frizz, nearly no flyaways, and softer, shinier curls. —Francesca Simmons, Glamour reviewer

Best for Thick Hair: Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo

Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo (10 oz.)

Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo

Original photo from Andrea Navarro testing Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo

  • What we love: Deeply moisturizing without weighing down thick strands; strengthens with keratin; luxe scent
  • Worth noting: Heavy for fine or looser curl types

“This shampoo will ruin all others for you,” says Allure’s Shipin, who has coarse, curly hair with medium-to-low porosity and reaches for Ouai for nourishment and frizz-taming. It’s an excellent choice for coarse curls and/or low-porosity hair (meaning, it has trouble absorbing moisture). The formula features hydrolyzed keratin, a protein that strengthens hair and improves its elasticity, as well as avocado and shea butter. The latter is a heavier hydrator that’s best suited for thick hair, which it won’t weigh down in the same way as fine hair, thought it will do a hell of a job moisturizing.

Our review: These days, there are so many great options for curls of all kinds, and I’ve found one that truly stands out for thick hair. This color-safe shampoo not only cleanses but also deeply moisturizes, strengthens, and fights frizz. It tackles dryness, color damage, split ends, and breakage—my hair feels stronger, looks shinier, and is less tangled. Marshmallow root helps soften and detangle, shea butter locks in moisture, and avocado oil prevents future breakage. And just like all Ouai products, this smells amazing, with the brand’s Mercer Street scent of Italian lemon, jasmine, and white musk. —Andrea Navarro, Glamour contributor

Redken Acidic Bonding Curls Silicone-Free Shampoo (10.14 fl. oz.)

Redken Acidic Bonding Curls SiliconeFree Shampoo

Original photo from Aimee Simeon testing Redken Acidic Bonding Curls Silicone-Free Shampoo

  • What we love: Rebuilds broken bonds from within hair shaft, not just on the surface; leaves curls soft and defined
  • Worth noting: Rich formula may feel heavy on fine hair

Kaley Cuoco Reveals Whether She Would Reprise Her Role in ‘Big Bang Theory’ (Exclusive)

Kaley Cuoco‘s new look is making a big bang.

The Big Bang Theory alum debuted a jaw-dropping dark hairstyle while stepping out in New York alongside her fiancé Tom Pelphrey at the 2025 US Open Sept. 5.

For the outing, Kaley—rocking a plaid skirt with a cream-colored sweater vest atop a button-down shirt and tie—wore her hair in sleek space buns, which emphasized her more recent brunette balayage coloring and hid her signature dirty blonde tips to create a darker effect. And to top off her head-turning ‘do, the 39-year-old accessorized with hoop earrings and brown-lensed sunglasses.

As for Tom—who she announced her engagement to in August 2024 following more than two years of dating—the Ozark actor kept it casual in tan trousers, a white T-shirt and a suede brown jacket. To complete his ensemble, the 43-year-old donned coordinating sunnies and deep chocolate boots.

Kaley and Tom’s appearance at the US Open marked the second glamorous date night of the month for the couple, who share 2-year-old daughter Matilda.

bitchy | Princess Kate debuted her new caramel hair at the Natural History Museum

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Two weekends ago, the Princess of Wales soft-launched her new “blonde” hair during a visit to Balmoral. We were waiting to see if Kate was still trying out a new color for her first work event in months. These are photos from Kate and Prince William’s visit to the Natural History Museum’s updated gardens today. Of course it rained like hell, but there were some dry moments, enough for people to get a look at Kate’s new hair. New wig, who dis??? My God. Sometimes I wonder if I’m being too harsh about the state of Kate’s hair, but honey… there’s a whole world of high-quality and realistic-looking wigs and hairpieces. And yet Kate always goes for the cheapest ones out there. Even if you argue (hilariously) that this is all of Kate’s natural hair, the color is what really makes it look so cheap! This color isn’t from sunning herself on a yacht, it came from a colorist who doesn’t know how to do good-quality caramel highlights.

Kate’s blazer is Ralph Lauren, but I haven’t seen any IDs on any of the other pieces. Her necklace is Daniella Draper, and it features the initials of her three kids. She’s worn that before, I’m almost positive. Yesterday, GB News published an odd piece about Kate’s jewelry and how she’s making an effort to wear fewer big, stately jewels. Like… yeah, we know, and that’s part of the copykeening as well.

Is Your Matcha Latte Making Your Hair Fall Out?

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

  • Caffeine-related side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, and headaches
  • Stomach irritation or digestive issues
  • Potential lead contamination
  • Teeth strain
  • May interact with medications
  • Possible liver stress in very high doses

If you just love matcha too much to completely cut it off, Samantha Dieras, RN, DCN, director of ambulatory nutrition services at Mount Sinai Hospital, says you don’t have to take such a drastic route. “If you enjoy it, [it] provides the benefits of drinking green tea,” Dieras says. Instead, she recommends being more thoughtful about the timing of when you consume it and what foods you can pair with it to offset the possible negative downsides. For example, you can drink your matcha about one to two hours before consuming iron-rich foods or make sure to add some vitamin C food with your iron-rich meals to increase absorption, she says. Also, be careful with the sweeteners and milk you add to your matcha, as they might contain unnecessary added sugars and other ingredients that are considered unhealthy.

As for the amount you’re consuming, Dr. Viola says a safe limit would be about 2 to 3 grams a day (which is the equivalent of 2 to 3 cups). Because matcha is more concentrated than regular tea, she tells patients that drinking 4 to 5 grams a day regularly is too much. Your body will alert you when it’s reached its limit with matcha. She says that if you’re experiencing insomnia, jitteriness, headaches, acid reflux, and other downsides, you may want to rethink that matcha latte. And if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have caffeine sensitivity, take certain medications, have an iron deficiency, or liver issues, it’s best to avoid daily matcha drinking. Other than that, you should be okay.

“Overall, if you’re healthy and moderate your intake, matcha can absolutely be part of a daily wellness routine,” she says. “Just be mindful of your body’s signals and iron status.”

What can you do about the shedding?

Dr. King says that hair loss is a complicated subject that can have many different causes. The most common causes, she says, are usually genetics, stress, and hormones. While diet can also be a factor, she says other deficiencies such as vitamin B, zinc, and vitamin D deficiency, as well as insufficient protein intake, can lead to hair loss. Your best bet as always is to ask a dermatologist or your doctor for answers. “It’s reasonable to cut back if you are drinking large amounts of matcha, but in most cases, hair loss is not caused by a single dietary factor,” she adds. “See your doctor for a thorough assessment.”

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleads Secrets: Salaries, Injuries, Hair, Makeup

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Don’t Quit Your Week-Day Job

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are always ready for some football, but the gig of a lifetime is also not the main event as far as income goes.

ESPN reported in 2017 that NFL team cheerleaders made roughly $75 to $150 per game, an eye-opening moment for fans who assumed those glamorous performers were making bank. Or at least a living wage.

As seen in the first season of America’s Sweethearts, DCC alum Kelcey Wetterberg is a pediatric registered nurse, while then-newcomer Reece Allman (née Weaver), who returned for the 2024 season, worked at a Dallas florist to supplement her earnings from cheerleading.

According to the Dallas Morning News, cheerleader pay has since risen to closer to $400 per game, plus hourly wages for all the time spent preparing for games and making appearances.

Still, DCC alum Kat Puryear said on the Netflix show, “I would say I’m making, like, a substitute teacher [salary]…I would say I’m making, like, Chick-fil-A worker that works full-time” money.
