Lyon’s Classic Film Market Expands With AI, Platforms, Global Reach

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

The International Classic Film Market (MIFC), the world’s only market dedicated to restoring and promoting heritage films, returns to Lyon alongside the Lumière Film Festival for its 13th edition expected to draw a record number of participants.

“All our indicators are up, both in terms of newcomers and international participants,” co-head Anaïs Desrieux told Variety.

Three high-profile guests of honor underscore the festival’s global reach: Andrea Kalas, VP of Media and Archival Services at Iron Mountain, Justine Ryst, YouTube’s France chief, and Gaëtan Bruel, the new head of the France’s film board CNC.

Another sign of the market’s growing industry pull comes from U.K.-based Park Circus, which joins this year as an official partner. The company handles global distribution of heritage titles for major U.S. studios as well as British and European libraries. CEO Douglas Davis will join Studiocanal’s Pauline Saint-Hilaire and Mk2 Films’ Benoit Claro for a roundtable on building international distribution strategies for heritage film.

Technology remains a hot topic, notably the use of AI in classic film preservation and restoration, with a focus this year on subtitling and dubbing. The debate will bring together heritage film conservation outfit Vectracom, Phont, a start-up specialised in so-called “emotional subtitling,” and translators’ representatives.

“No one at the table is opposed to progress, but the real challenge is to ensure that this innovation truly qualifies as such for the whole ecosystem,” said Desrieux. Co-head Gérald Duchaussoy added “subtitles are not neutral – subtitling is a creative activity that shapes how films are understood.”

New tools will be on display at the Classics Innovation Corner, where startups such as Phont, AI-powered search and licensing platform Refractio, and distributor-oriented CN Films will present their tech.

Another key theme is the growing role of streaming services in the circulation of heritage cinema, which Ryst is sure to address as she spotlights YouTube’s 20th anniversary.

“There is a great heritage offer on YouTube, with access to films, archives and programs dedicated to classic films, and content creators engaging whole new audiences,” said Duchaussoy.

Case studies will feature Sooner – the new merger of French streamers Universciné and Filmo –, heritage film platform LaCinetek, and entertainment site Allociné, which is launching a dedicated service, Allociné Classique. “Thanks to these platforms, the films are not just being preserved, they are being reintroduced to audiences in the digital era,” Desrieux noted.

From digital strategies to face-to-face deal-making, circulation remains a priority for organizers, with initiatives like the popular Re>Birth program, now in its third edition. The showcase pitches either recently restored titles carrying the Lumière Classics label or works seeking restoration partners for 10-minute sessions followed by one-to-one meetings aimed at sparking deals.

Hungary provides an inspiring example as country of honor thanks to its strong track-record in preservation and circulation through events such as the Budapest Classic Film Marathon. MIFC regular György Ráduly, head of the Hungarian National Film Archive, will be among the guests.

Other highlights include debates on the new AgoraEU program, Europe’s audiovisual heritage policy, and the power of curated retrospectives, with this year’s tributes to Martin Ritt and Konrad Wolf illustrating how restorations drive a second life in theaters, festivals, on TV and platforms. France’s arthouse exhibitors’ association, AFCAE, which marks its 70th anniversary, will examine the future of classic film on the big screen.

As always, there will be the market’s staple sessions, from catalogue holders’ previews to distributors’ line-ups and dedicated events for exhibitors.

African cinema will also take the spotlight with a showcase of the new podcast series “Cineastes d’Afrique,” celebrating pioneers of African filmmaking.

Looking to the future, a new European student workshop will bring together some 40 students from six universities to work with professionals in the heritage field. “We want to help the next generation build connections that will shape the sector’s future,” said Desrieux.

For Duchaussoy, the workshop reflects the market’s broader mission: “Heritage cinema is not just about looking back,” he said. “It’s about imagining the future, with new professionals, new technologies and new audiences.”

As Desrieux summed up, “Our goal is to give the heritage sector a stronger international framework and profile. That means bringing players together, questioning our practices and creating real business opportunities around the circulation of classic films.”

The MIFC runs in Lyon over Oct. 14–Oct. 17.

Beyond Captions: Rethinking Global Event Engagement

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The events industry is more global than ever. Audiences join from every corner of the world, often in multiple formats – live, virtual, and hybrid. Yet too often, organisers treat accessibility and language support as an add-on rather than a core part of the experience. Captions and interpretation are critical, but they represent just one piece of a much larger challenge: creating an event that feels local and relevant to every attendee, no matter where they are.

The New Expectation for Global Events

Today’s audiences expect more than just a live stream with subtitles. They want to engage in their own language, receive personalised communications before the event, and continue the conversation afterward through localised content. That means organisers need a holistic approach that connects every touchpoint, from the first invite to post-event follow-up.

Why Captions Alone Aren’t Enough

Interpretation and captions break down barriers in the moment, but engagement begins long before an attendee logs in. Microsites, registration forms, social media campaigns, even text reminders – each should be tailored and localised. When this doesn’t happen, organisers risk lower attendance, reduced engagement, and missed opportunities to connect with international markets.

A Broader Solution

This is where TransPerfect Live comes in. More than just captions and interpretation, it provides a complete framework for multilingual events. At its core is GlobalLink Live, a proprietary platform that delivers real-time language access in over 150 languages with the support of 4,000+ expert linguists. TransPerfect Live builds on this foundation by extending localisation across marketing, websites, apps, and video content – ensuring consistency before, during, and after the event.

“Your social media, your text messages, your on-site materials – all should be localised and nuanced for each audience,” explains Nate Fong, Regional Director at TransPerfect. “We prioritise the success of your event period , not just the logistics of getting your event live.”

What Leading Brands Are Doing

Global leaders such as Citrix, Absolut, Hilton, Lufthansa, Novo Nordisk, and Trek know that inclusive, multilingual events aren’t optional – they’re a competitive advantage. They trust TransPerfect Live, powered by GlobalLink Live technology, to scale events of all kinds, from conferences and executive briefings to training sessions and investor meetings. The result is multilingual engagement that’s simple, scalable, and effective.

Looking Ahead

The future of global events lies in connection without compromise. As we demonstrated at GlobalLink NEXT in London, real-time multilingual technology is already transforming what’s possible – helping organisers deliver experiences that are truly borderless.

Learn more about GlobalLink NEXT and discover how TransPerfect Live, powered by GlobalLink Live technology, can help your next event go beyond captions.

Be sure to visit TransPerfect Live on the show floor at Event Tech Live at Booth #E50 to meet a member of the team.

‘Taylor Swift: Showgirl’ Movie Eyes Global Opening Around $50M: Box Office

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Wherever the AMC distributed Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl lands at the box office, consider it unprecedented.

Not just in the mere fact that the No. 1 exhibitor in the world is releasing another one of her concert films, rather no other motion picture studio ever has dated a wide release two weeks out on an extremely low P&A campaign, largely focused on the social media push of its star, to what is expected to be a No. 1 haul at the box office.

Domestic estimates are $30M-$35M at 3,500 locations for the movie which is timed to the release of the 14x Grammy winner’s 12th studio album. International, where the movie is on sale in more than 50 markets, is looking at another $8M-$10M for a global bow on the high-end of $45M. Ala Eras Tour, the box office is largely driven by U.S./Canada.

Still a secret at the time of this post is exactly who directed this anticipated mix of lyrics music videos and docu bits.

Note this, even if Showgirl buckles with a $25M U.S./Canada opening, it ain’t a bad thing. It’s hard for some to read Swifties on tracking; the singer’s last AMC Concert movie, The Eras Tour, looked like a $100M+ opening, but filed the second best start stateside in October with $93.2M (behind 2019’s Joker which opened to $96.2M). Right now, women under 25 in first choice are huge at a 25 versus women over 25 (9) and men which are in the low single digits.

In first-day sales, we already told you that Showgirl had $15M, with AMC seeing their sixth biggest first day presales ever with around $7.5M. Sources say presales are now north of $20M. Showgirl is having a one weekend play, and there aren’t any Thursday previews.

At the end of the day, it’s all about selling albums for Swift. There just happens to be some movie tickets that can be sold along the way.

Some of Swift’s PR stunts include an appearance on the Graham Norton show in the UK on Friday, and there’s also a Spotify pop-up experience in NYC that began yesterday and runs through Oct. 2.

Swift will appear on The Tonight Show on Oct. 6 and Late Night With Seth Meyers on Oct. 8. It would not be shocking if she suddenly made a cameo on the Saturday Night Live season 51 opener this weekend.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

In a weekend where A24’s Dwayne Johnson movie, The Smashing Machine, was expected to rally, Swift’s arrival stole PLFs from that movie, as well as Warner Bros.’ second weekend of Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. Showgirl will now share PLFs with the Na’vi as Disney has the 3D re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water which at 2,100 is expected to do $3M-$4M. The third highest grossing movie ever at $2.3 billion worldwide (seventh domestic at $684M) will have a sneak peek of Avatar: Fire & Ash at the end of the film (each theater features one of three rotating glimpses).

While Avatar 2 will have 90% of the Imax, One Battle After Another will hold onto its Imax 70MM auditoriums. The hope is that the Leonardo DiCaprio movie eases -40% or better with around $13M. Currently, in its first five days at the box office with a running cume of $27.7M, -2% compared to the same frame as Killers of the Flower Moon two years ago.

‘The Smashing Machine’

A24

Smashing Machine, which was made for net $50M production cost, largely covered by foreign presales, hopes for a $13M-$17M opening at 3,000 theaters, down from its initial $20M projection. The Benny Safdie directed movie is best with men over 25 in first choice. Reviews out of Venice (where Johnson cried during the standing ovation) and TIFF are at 76% certified fresh. Any optimism lies in the Johnson faithful and WWE fans showing up. The movie follows mixed-martial arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr’s wrestling tours in Japan, his struggle with drug addiction and turbulent marriage with his wife, played by Emily Blunt.

Bleecker Street has the Mercedes Bryce Morgan directed erotic thriller, Bone Lake, in 1,045 sites, also in the low single digits. The movie, which world premiered at Fantastic Fest, stands at 94% fresh with critics. Pic’s blurb: A couple’s vacation at a secluded estate is upended when they’re forced to share the mansion with a mysterious couple. A dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, triggering a battle for survival.

IFC’s Good Boy at around 1,650 theaters, is also in the low single digits. The Ben Leonberg directed and co-written comedy horror thriller follows a loyal dog who moves to a rural family home with his owner. The he discovers supernatural forces lurking in the shadows and does what a brave pup must do to protest those he loves the most. Outlook is also low single digits with a RT critics score of 93% fresh.

Adelaide named the most improved destination in Global Sustainability Index

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Adelaide won a major international award on Wednesday morning (SA time) for its sustainability performance in a global cities program.

The Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) is a pioneering change agency that acts to catalyse socio-economic and environmental transformation in cities and regions across the world. It benchmarks and enhances the sustainability strategies, action plans and initiatives of over 100 destination management organisations worldwide.

2024 was the first year that Adelaide took part in the GDS-Index. This year, the city was named as ‘Most Improved Destination’ and placed 54th on the list overall.

ImageImage

Business Events Adelaide coordinated Adelaide’s entry into the index, with strong support from the South Australian Tourism Commission, the Adelaide Convention Centre, the City of Adelaide and a host of other leading Adelaide organisations. With Adelaide still strongly tipped to host COP31– the global sustainability conference – next year, the coveted award demonstrates Adelaide’s growing status as an environmentally focussed business event destination.

Business Events Adelaide Chief Executive Officer, Damien Kitto, said that the organisation was delighted with the result. “The Index requires a high level of detail, with some 76 criteria and 300 sub-questions. Our aim in the first year was to get an understanding of the areas that Adelaide was strong in and those that we needed to focus on, and it is fantastic to see such a big improvement in a short space of time,” he said.

“We are aware that sustainability issues are becoming an increasingly important consideration for business event organisers and delegates.” Mr Kitto continued. “This was one of our motivations for getting involved with GDS-Movement. Adelaide has a great story to tell in regard to sustainability, being a city in a park and with easy, walkable accessibility. GDS-Movement provides a stamp of approval to validate our initiatives and allows us to talk about Adelaide as a clean and green destination with some confidence”.

Emma Terry, Chief Executive, South Australian Tourism Commission, said “Adelaide has always sought to take a leadership position in urban sustainability. From pioneering renewable energy to fostering green infrastructure and circular economy practices, our city has consistently demonstrated its commitment to a cleaner, more resilient future. While there is still much to be done, we are pleased that Adelaide has been recognised as the Most Improved Destination for 2025, which is reflective of our commitment to be a tourism destination that has people, place and planet at its heart”.

Sarah Goldfinch, General Manager Adelaide Convention Centre, said “As a new participant in the GDS-Index, Adelaide’s ‘Most Improved Destination’ score is indicative of the strength of our sustainability credentials. We’re optimistic that we will continue to improve our indexation in future years to best reflect our destination’s true sustainability leadership.

At Adelaide Convention Centre, we’re proud to play our part. Sustainability is embedded in everything we do, guided by our world-first EarthCheck Master certification for a convention centre.”

Greg Ratsch, General Manager of the Adelaide Economic Development Agency, said “Adelaide’s recognition is a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable innovation, collaboration, and global leadership. This award not only highlights the progress we’ve made but also positions us strongly on the world stage as a destination that prioritises people and planet. It reflects the hard work of partners across government, industry, and community, and it gives us momentum to keep pushing forward.”

Mr Kitto was keen to stress that this was not the end of Adelaide’s ambition, especially with the prospect of COP on the horizon. “If Adelaide is the chosen host, COP – and the increased exposure that will result from it – offers a unique opportunity to position Adelaide at the forefront of environmentally and socially progressive measures. It could attract a significant number of future business events related to sustainability, clean energy generation and associated fields, along with leading experts from around the world sharing their knowledge with local environmentally focussed organisations. The legacy opportunities will provide Adelaide with greater understanding to further boost its sustainability credentials in years for come.”

Cardi B Replaces The Weeknd At 2025 Global Citizens Festival

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B has officially been tapped to headline the 2025 Global Citizen Festival, stepping in to replace The Weeknd after his sudden withdrawal from the lineup.

The Weeknd’s decision to pull out, according to organizers, was due to a personal emergency, though details remain private.

The annual festival, set to take place on Saturday, September 27, in New York City’s Central Park, is a cornerstone event in the fight against global poverty, blending star-studded performances with activism-driven calls to action.

“We are incredibly grateful to Cardi B, who has joined the Global Citizen Festival lineup,” wrote Global Citizen CEO and co-founder Hugh Evans in a statement.

“She’s an outstanding performer, who will light up Central Park in spectacular fashion. We wish The Weeknd support and want to thank him and his fans for all taking action with us to help end extreme poverty.”

For Cardi, the opportunity to headline holds deeper meaning than just music.

“This one’s not like other music festivals — this one is about coming together to help children around the world, and I’m so proud to support such an important cause,” she shared in a statement. “New York City — see you Saturday. Let’s get it!!!”

Fresh off the release of her long-awaited sophomore album Am I The Drama?, which is projected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Cardi’s appearance will be second time performing at the festival.

She previously took to the stage in her hometown back in 2018, after the release of her debut studio album Invasion of Privacy.

These include delivering clean, reliable energy to 1 million people in Africa, generating $200 million for Indigenous and local entrepreneurs to preserve land within the Amazon rainforest, and raising at least $30 million to fund community-based education programs that improve children’s literacy.

Tickets to the Global Citizen Festival are free and available through the Global Citizen app.

The Weeknd Bails On Global Citizen

The Weeknd has dropped out of his planned headlining slot at the Global Citizen Festival on Saturday (Sept. 27) in New York’s Central Park and will be replaced on the bill by Cardi B.

“I regret to share that, due to personal reasons, I am unable to perform at Global Citizen,” the Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) said in a statement. “Thank you to my fans for taking action with them, as I believe in their mission deeply. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

“Central Park, I’m coming for you!!!,” Cardi B added. “I can’t wait to be home in New York, and to bring my new songs and all the DRAMA to the Global Citizen festival. This one’s not like other music festivals — this one is about coming together to help children around the world, and I’m so proud to support such an important cause.”

Hosted by Hugh Jackman, Global Citizen will also feature performances from Shakira, Tyla, Mariah the Scientist, Camilo and Elyanna and will be carried on YouTube, Amazon Music, Apple Music and iHeartRadio.

The event was the subject of significant controversy when Central Park’s Great Lawn was heavily damaged during its rain-marred 2023 edition, after which Global Citizen paid millions of dollars to restore the grass. At the time, several local politicians called for the festival to be moved to a stadium or arena in the interest of preserving the park’s green space.
