Simu Liu would hate to see film and TV extras replaced by AI

Simu Liu feels that using artificial intelligence (AI) to replace actors is “antiethical”.

Simu Liu îs fearful of AI’s impact on actors

The 36-year-old actor took to social media last week to hit back at Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary’s claim that utilising AI to replace extras could bring down costs on movies and thinks it is essential to have background performers so that aspiring stars can learn the technical aspects of making a film or TV show.

In an interview with Deadline, Simu said: “First of all, I thought that take that I was responding to is a really dumb take, particularly really tone deaf and out of touch and also just kind of incorrect.

“The idea that these background actors who are making minimum wage are somehow the reason why movies now are costing too much, that’s simply not true.”

Liu’s first acting job came as an extra in the 2013 film Pacific Rim and he said the lessons he learned from the experience were “invaluable” for him going forward.

The Barbie star said: “This idea of replacing actors with AI, it’s so antiethical to my development as an actor. I think if I was able to learn from that experience, then how many other people are doing the same? In depriving the world of background actors, you’re also depriving people the opportunity to kind of pick up these skills.”

Simu argues that the art of making movies should remain human, instead of falling under the control of computers.

The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor said: “Film is such an artist’s medium. Of all the uses AI that have come forth, replacing art is just, I feel like, the last thing that anybody wants to do with AI. I feel like art is art because it’s human. It comes down to even the way the extra move… it all plays into the frame, and it’s all meaningful to the story.

“I really do feel like human beings are smart. I feel like when we see somebody in the background not moving like a human, we know. I feel like we could still tell the difference, at least right now.”

In his initial response to O’Leary last week, Simu had written on social media platform X: “Sure, blame the extras making 15-22 dollars an hour struggling to make a living and not above the line people making multiple millions.”

Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty starrer The Girlfriend has been making waves ever since its trailer release. Rahul Ravindran directs the movie, which will have a grand theatrical release on November 7, 2025, in various languages — Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam. Presented by Allu Aravind under the banner Geetha Arts, the movie guarantees an intense and insightful look at modern relationships.

Recently, there was an interesting behind-the-scenes fact about the casting revealed. Director Rahul Ravindran had first approached Arjun Reddy and Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga for a cameo. But Sandeep rejected the offer, saying that the character was not a cameo. The character was then offered to popular comedian Vennela Kishore, and he too refused. Finally, Rahul Ravindran took the decision to act himself.

The Girlfriend delves into the darker and more emotional aspects of love, control, and obsession. The trailer starts off with Rashmika’s character seeming tense and requesting a break from her boyfriend, played by Dheekshith Shetty. The film then cuts to when they were in a better phase in their relationship and how Dheekshith’s character turned out to be obsessive. What begins as a fiery romance gradually turns into a suffocating affair, with Rashmika’s character being trapped and yearning to break free. The tone and theme of the trailer have led to comparisons with Kabir Singh, indicating a dramatic, emotionally driven plot.

Rashmika Mandanna posted the trailer on Instagram, captioning it, “This one’s not your usual love story… it’ll make you think.” Fans welcomed the actress’s choice of role with enthusiasm in the comments, appreciative that she had opted for a non-traditional role. The release of the trailer also encouraged speculation online, arriving just a day after news of Rashmika’s supposed engagement to Vijay Deverakonda broke online.

The Girlfriend boasts a robust support cast in the form of Koushik Mahata, Rohini, and Rao Ramesh. The soundtrack for the movie is by Hesham Abdul Wahab, who is known for his soulful tunes, and cinematography is done by Krishnan Vasant. Production design is by S. Rama Krishna and Monika Nigotre, and the editor is Chota K. Prasad. Directed by Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi, The Girlfriend is well on its way to becoming an intriguing psychological drama with a deep exploration of love and obsession.

Matt Copson Adapting His Buzzy Opera ‘Last Days’ Into Feature Film

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Following successful runs at the Royal Opera House in London and the LA Phil, the buzzy English-language opera Last Days has been adapted for the big screen by artist and filmmaker Matt Copson, who co-created the original opera with Oliver Leith.

Inspired by Gus Van Sant’s 2005 film of the same name and financed by Mubi, Spain’s AF Films, and LUMA, with additional support from Nina Pictures and Artemis Rising Foundation, the film is currently in production in Spain.

Copson will direct the screen adaptation, with Agathe Rousselle (Titane) signed on to star. Rousselle also starred in the original opera production. Last Days is produced by AF and Many Enterprises and Riccardo Maddalosso, in collaboration with Mubi and Joslyn Barnes’ Louverture Films (Nickel Boys). Mubi has world rights, excluding Spain, on the pic. AF retains all rights in Spain.

Last Days dramatizes the final period in the life of a successful but reclusive musician, Blake, played by Rousselle. Blake has just escaped rehab to return home, but the peace of his household is soon disrupted by a series of unwelcome visitors. Adding to the chaos are constant calls from his manager and the presence of a private investigator and a superfan stalking nearby. As the turmoil around him reaches its peak, the ghostly figure of a magician appears, offering him a way out. In the end, Blake is left alone, facing only what remains: himself.

French cinematographer Claire Mathon, best known for her acclaimed work with Céline Sciamma (Petite Maman, Portrait Of A Lady on Fire), will serve as the Director of Photography. Sound Design will be led by Nicolas Becker (Sound Of Metal), Production Design is by Liam Moore, Nicolas Chaudeurge is the Editor, and Anna Morrisey is the movement director. Costume Design is by Nat Turner.

The score by Oliver Leith, original to the opera, features an aria sung by Caroline Polachek.

Last Days will mark Copson’s feature directorial debut. The British artist and filmmaker is best known for his work in the worlds of contemporary art and opera. Copson is most widely acclaimed for his theatrical installations, which fuse lasers, sculptures, and sound. He has exhibited internationally at the KW Institute in Berlin, Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, Aspen Art Museum, and Serpentine Galleries in London.

Copson has also closely collaborated with Polachek, co-directing all her music videos with her since 2019. The 2005 Van Sant film was an experimental and fictionalized account of a  Seattle musician’s life and career, reminiscent of those of Kurt Cobain.

Japan Set As 2026 Country Of Honor At Cannes Marché Du Film

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

The Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film has unveiled Japan as the Country of Honour for its 2026 edition next May.

The Marché du Film’s Executive Director Guillaume Esmiol officially announced the choice at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) on Tuesday, alongside Junichi Sakomoto, Chair of the Executive Committee for Japan, Country of Honour 2026.

News of the focus was teased at Tokyo’s opening night, with a promise of more details during the festival.

As Country of Honour, Japan will open the 2026 edition by co-hosting the Marché du Film’s Opening Night and then have a special place in Marché du Film’s programs, including its panels, networking events and project showcases putting the spotlight on Japanese animation and genre cinema.

Other key initiatives include a summit on Japan’s film industry to foster collaboration and innovation, and a special screening day dedicated to Japanese cinema.

Through its participation, Japan aims to build strong professional networks with the international film community and promote its film and content industries for future success in global markets.

With over 120 years of filmmaking history, Japan stands as one of the world’s most influential film nations.

Its legacy spans legendary names such as Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujirō Ozu and 1980 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Akira Kurosawa to contemporary auteurs such as Hirokazu Kore-eda, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Naomi Kawase and emerging names such as Chie Hayakawa, who continue to fly the flag in Cannes’ Official Selection to this day.

The Marché du Film pointed to the country’s robust film industry which it said produced around 1,200 films annually.

It also highlighted the health of its theatrical sector drawing 150 million cinemagoers each year, representing an overall gross of $1.3, suggesting this demonstrated resilience in an era defined by digitalization and an ever-growing range of entertainment choices.

The 2026 focus will build on Japan’s close relationship with the Marché du Film, where Japanese sales companies are among the most established in the Palais des Festivals, while the Japan Pavilion, coordinated by UniJapan, has been a long-standing fixture at the Village International.

““We are truly delighted and proud that Japan has been selected as the Country of Honour. It presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase the appeal of Japanese cinema on a global stage. We look forward to seeing Japan’s rich film culture, along with its emerging talents and technologies, shine even brighter internationally and contribute to the advancement of cinema both in Japan and around the world,” said Sakomoto.

Esmiol added: “Japan holds a unique place in international cinema, and its creative legacy continues to inspire generations of filmmakers. It also holds a unique place at the Marché du Film, as one of the most represented and dynamic countries, with highly active sales companies and producers. On a more personal note: as someone with Japanese roots, it’s a beautiful opportunity to pay tribute to my cultural heritage.”

Japan’s participation will be organized by the Executive Committee for Japan, Country of Honour 2026, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Specific program details and participating institutions will be announced in early 2026.

Japan follows Brazil (2025), Switzerland (2024), Spain (2023) and India (2022) as the fifth Country of Honour, an initiative launched by the Marché du Film to recognize nations for their outstanding contributions to the global film industry and to foster international exchange and collaboration.

The 2026 Marché du Film will open May 12 and run until May 20, while the Cannes Film Festival will run until May 23.

Jr NTR’s Film Unit to Scout for Locations in Tunisia

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Jr NTR’s upcoming film Dragon (working title) has wrapped up two schedules of shooting so far. Just when the third schedule was about to be commenced, the unit took a break. Partly because the actor needs time to undergo body transformation for one of the roles, and partly because director Prashanth Neel is tweaking the script to make it more gripping and intense. Jr NTR is set to resume shooting for the film next week, meanwhile other members from the unit are set to leave for Tunisia for scouting locations.

Week-long location scout

A team from Jr NTR and Prashanth Neel’s film unit will leave for Tunisia (North Africa) to scout for locations. The country is a popular location for film shooting, particularly known for being a primary filming location for both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. From ancient archaeological sites and bustling souks to blue coasts, Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara Desert, the country has everything. Neel wanted to explore interesting locations and bring out the best side of the country in his film. According to sources, “A technical team will leave for the North African country of Tunisia in a couple of days for a week-long location scout.” After SSMB29, Dragon would be the second Telugu film to visit an African country for film shooting in recent times.

Prashanth Neel Dragon

Shooting in November

If all goes well, Jr NTR will commence shooting for the film’s overseas schedule in the last week of November. But before that the actor would resume shooting…working briefly for a lavish action episode at RFC in Hyderabad. The film’s large canvas, extensive VFX, and complex action sequences require significant post-production time. Tipped to be an epic action saga with emotionally charged incidents that take place over a periodic timeline, the film is slated to hit theatres on June 25, 2025.

“People are always looking for happiness in all the wrong places… Family is happiness.” Indeed. Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled simply Mango, a story about a mango farmer in Spain. This film is a Danish production, about a Danish woman, who goes to Spain, starring an Iraqi-Danish actor who’s playing a Danish man running this farm in Spain. Lærke, an ambitious hotel manager, is sent to Málaga (see Google Maps) to develop a hotel on Alex’s mango farm. Lærke’s daughter joins, expecting a rare holiday with her mother. Unexpected feelings arise between Lærke and Alex, forcing them both to make life-altering choices on what to do next. A romance story set in Spain about two people growing feelings for each other. Both mother and daughter “find what they’ve been craving in a farmer’s idyllic mango orchard.” Oooh la la. Starring Dar Salim as Alex & Josephine Park as Lærke, Josephine Chavarria Højbjerg as daughter Agnes, and Sara Jiménez as Paula. Most of all I just want to try some of this gorgeous-looking mango he’s growing. And that mangonade. She better stay with him on this farm and grow mangoes! Take a look below.

Here’s the main official trailer for Mehdi Avaz’s Malaga romance film Mango, from Netflix’s YouTube:

Mango Film Trailer

Mango Film Trailer

The ambitious hotel manager, Lærke (Josephine Park), seizes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when her boss sends her to Malaga, Spain, to develop a grand new hotel in the middle of a mango farm. The farm belongs to Alex, a former lawyer, who refuses to sell due to a tragic past he can’t let go of. Lærke brings along her daughter, Agnes, who expects rare holiday time with her busy mother — or so she believes. As unexpected feelings start to bloom between Lærke & Alex, both are forced to make choices that will impact their careers, family ties, and ultimately, their hearts. Mango is directed by the Danish-Iranian filmmaker Mehdi Avaz, director of the movies While We Live, Collision, Toscana, A Beautiful Life, plus Børnene fra Sølvgade 1 & 2 previously. The screenplay is written by fellow filmmaker Milad Schwartz Avaz. Produced by Anna Malmkjær Willumsen. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Netflix debuts Avaz’s Mango film streaming on Netflix starting November 7th, 2025 this fall. Want to watch it?

Thamma box office collection day 6: Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films expanded its horror-comedy universe with Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film is continuing to hold steady at the box office.

Thamma box office collection day 6: Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s horror comedy started on a strong note on Diwali.

Thamma box office update

According to trade tracking site Sacnilk, Thamma is performing well at the box office. On day six, which marked the first Sunday after its release, the film earned ₹13 crore, bringing its total collection to ₹91.70 crore.

The film, part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, had started on a strong note on Diwali before slightly dipping over the weekdays. But it seems to be making a healthy recovery over the weekend now. In terms of occupancy, the film had an overall 23.19 per cent occupancy in Hindi on Sunday.

The supernatural-themed film saw a significant boost at the box office on its fifth day, earning ₹13.1 crore. This marked a 31 percent jump compared to the previous day, when the film had raked in ₹10 crore. The surge in collections suggests growing audience interest, indicating that the film is gaining momentum as it continues its theatrical run.

On Saturday, Thamma surpassed the lifetime box office collection of Varun Dhawan’s Maddock horror-comedy Bhediya, which had grossed ₹68.99 crore. Prior to this, the film had already overtaken the domestic earnings of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, which had earned ₹60.35 crore.

The film is working well overseas as well. Thamma has crossed the ₹100 crore mark in terms of worldwide earnings in five days.

All about Thamma

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma stars Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as vampires, with Ayushmann playing a journalist caught in the midst of their bloody battle. The film comes with several surprise cameo appearances from other actors in the MHCU, including Varun Dhawan.

Thamma is the fifth instalment in Maddock’s horror-comedy universe after Stree (2018), Bhediya (2022), Munjya and Stree 2 (both 2024). Produced by Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik, the film is described as a bloody love story. It was released on October 21.

Animation Is Film Festival Winners Include Little Amelie, Arco

by jummy84 October 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Animation Is Film, the Los Angeles-based film festival dedicated to spotlighting animation as an art form, announced the winners of their 8th annual festival this week.

“Little Amélie or the Character of Rain,” a French animated film directed by Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, took the Grand Jury Prize from the festival. Another French film that played at Cannes, “Arco” by Ugo Bienvenu, received the Audience Award. The Fumi Kitahara Special Jury Prize, renamed this year to honor late publicist Fumi Kitahara, went to Spanish Animated film “Decorado” from director Alberto Vázquez. Short films “Gigi” by Cynthia Calvi and “Éiru” by Giovanna Ferrari won the Shorts Jury Grand Prize and the Special Jury Prize for Shorts, respectively.

'Little Amélie or the Character of Rain'

In an interview with IndieWire, Festival director Matt Kaszanek spoke about how the festival was created in 2017 to challenge narratives about animation as a lesser form of art, as well as showcase the best of international animated cinema.

“I think it’s unique to other festivals in that it’s its name is also its mission, which is to celebrate animation, to push back on a narrative that some people have, even subconsciously, that animation is kind of some lesser form of cinema. That you can like animation, but those are not titles that should be considered among the best films of the year,” Kaszanek told IndieWire. “I hear the word animated used as a qualifier a lot. When people are talking about films, they’ll say ‘Oh, I really, really loved ‘Flow.’ That was the best animated film of the year.’ And I would counter that, I think ‘Flow’ was one of the best films of last year. Animation Is Film is very much about that, and that’s its mission.”

Reflecting on how the festival has grown, Kaszanek told IndieWire that the festival has grown in attendance every year since its inception. He also said that, as the festival has established a foothold in the industry, it has become a bellwether for the Animated Feature and Animated Shorts race, with it becoming common for the majority of the movies that make the categories to play at the festival.

“Most of the films that you’re seeing at the festival, these are the films that are getting nominated for Academy Awards,” Kaszanek said. “Four of the best animated shorts had played at Animation Is Film [last year]. And then on the feature side, if you look back over the last four years, it’s pretty common we’ll have typically four, sometimes five of the Best Animated Feature nominees.”

The 2025 festival opened with “Scarlet,” an anime film from director Mamoru Hosoda. “Arco” served as the centerpiece film for the festival, while “Little Amélie” was the official closing selection. Other movies that played at the festival included “Lesbian Space Princes,” “All You Need Is Kill,” “A Story About Fire,” and a remastering of “Paranorman.” Panels from the festival included talks with the directors behind “KPOP Demon Hunters” and a sneak preview of the upcoming “Zootopia 2.”

“We really try to position ourselves as, this is your opportunity to really see everything that’s played at the bigger festivals over the course of the year. So you’re looking at what was at Berlin? And so we got ‘A Story About Fire’ from there, and then what was playing in Cannes, and that’s ‘Arco’ and ‘Little Amélie,’” Kaszanek said. “Geographical diversity is great because we really do sell this festival as an international event, and you’re seeing films from all over the world.”

Reflecting on how the festival has made an impact and the state of animation has evolved, Kaszanek told IndieWire that he feels critical respect for animation has only grown in the years since the festival started. He brought up an increase in animated movies playing at other festivals as a sign of the medium’s evolution and a sign of a promising future for the industry.

“We’re not the only people that are kind of beating that drum that animation is film, and it should be taken seriously, and that these are films that should be celebrated alongside live action films. The progress that I’m seeing is that that’s more people are saying it. The call for that is getting louder,” Kaszanek told IndieWire. “The more film festivals that are showing animation in their lineup, in their competition, is a good thing for the entire industry, and we’re seeing that.”

The 2025 Animation is Film Festival ran from October 17 to 19th at the TCL Chinese Theaters. Read the complete list of winners below.

Grand Jury Prize: “Little Amélie Or the Character of Rain” (dir. Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han)
