Brooklyn Horror Film Festival 2025 — Winners List

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Are rats cute, creepy, or a matter of genre? That’s the sort of debate you have at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival — a warm-and-whacky annual event in New York City that expanded rapidly for its 10th edition.

Co-founded by creative director Justin Timms, this gonzo celebration started a decade ago as a quaint movie club in the backroom of a bar. Now, it’s a ten-day affair held at several different venues with an estimated 5,000 guests in attendance for 2025. That’s a 20 percent increase since last year and proof that buzz for Brooklyn Horror is building scary well.

“Rats, much like horror, are deeply misunderstood,” said Timms, who champions plenty of weird art you could describe that way. This year, Brooklyn Horror gave top accolades to Mickey Reece’s “Every Heavy Thing,” Emilio Portes’ “Don’t Leave the Kids Alone,” and “Last Call,” a short film directed by Winnie Cheung. Read the exclusive Brooklyn Horror Film Festival winners announcement below.

David Zaslav and Steven Spielberg at the premiere of 'The Color Purple' held at The Academy Museum on December 6, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

“There really wasn’t a festival like this in New York,” said Timms. “There’s the New York City Horror Film Festival, but they show more strictly defined horror movies — and Scary Movies at Lincoln Center is back, but that’s a much smaller program. So, there are other horror festivals, but they’re just not programming all of the kinds of films that we’re interested in.”

Creative director Justin Timms at the 10th Brooklyn Horror Film FestivalSean Chee, Brooklyn Horror Film Fest

Brooklyn Horror recruited IndieWire to its panel of expert judges this year. That group — which also included voices from prominent genre brands like Vinegar Syndrome, Fangoria, MPI Media, Alter, and more — toasted not just the scariest cinema but the most out-there media of all kinds. That’s important to Joseph Hernandez, the senior programmer and director of community development who has been working alongside Timms since the festival’s inception.

“The mainstream perception of horror goes back to the ‘80s to that explosion of slasher sequels, and that’s what really helped form the image of what a horror movie is today,” Hernandez said. “Ever since then, true horror fans have been trying to explain that the genre world is so much more than that.”

The three categories in competition at Brooklyn Horror 2025 included the annual shorts contest; the Dark Matter lineup, for features grounded in serious subject matter; and the Head Trip section, for features that expand your mind. The winners from the 10th-anniversary year demonstrate just how far you can stretch the definition of an award-worthy film — in the best way.

“What worries me most is that people will stop taking big swings,” said publicist Justin Cook, when asked about his hopes and fears for the genre landscape going forward. Cook just joined Brooklyn Horror Film Festival a few years ago, but he knows what’s cutting-edge. “There should always be movies out there that take big swings. Some work for me personally. Some do not. But I will always respect a big swing.”

Asked about the best movie debate he’s had at Brooklyn Horror so far, Cook hauled off and asserted a hot take he heard earlier this week: Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” is… more entertaining than John Carpenter’s original?! Programmer Tori Potenza is a recent addition to the team too, and it’s those kinds of moments that transformed them from a visiting film critic to a yearly organizer hungry for more.

“The community is the thing that made me love this festival so much,” said Potenza, noting that many of the most important conversations in genre veer toward Dark Matter. “When you look at the history of horror, there’s so much that’s either in the subtext or the actual text that’s about marginalized communities. We are representing that history by honoring people who didn’t always have the chance to be behind the camera and tell their own stories.”

The 2025 Leviathan Award winner Ernest Dickerson at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Sean Chee/Brooklyn Horror

“Horror is a very wide prism that can be so many things and we’re just constantly trying to reflect that in our program every year,” agreed Hernandez. “We are a genre film festival and we’re very proud of our ongoing mission to continue to stretch that definition.”

When Brooklyn Horror first got started, the infamous pizza rat video from 2015 had just gone viral. The rodent has served as the fest’s unofficial mascot ever since, but it took a decade for Timms to finally stop by a Spirit Halloween and pick up the animatronic that’s stealing the spotlight in all of this year’s photos. The rat is called Pepperoni and his agent “demands he be credited by name,” said Cook.

But to quote the truest internet meme I’ve read in recent memory, “The worst person you know is somewhere saying, ‘I’m passionate about uplifting community.’” Not so at Brooklyn Horror, where Timms avoids taking credit and instead heaps praise on his organizers and volunteers… while waxing poetic on the redemptive quality of rats. Popping sponsored Gushers in red wine (an off-the-menu secret you found here first!), the creative director shared his favorite conversation from this year’s Brooklyn Horror as well.

Recalling a chat he had with Leviathan Award winner Ernest Dickerson, who got distracted on his way to the bathroom during a screening, Timms said, “He forgot he was waiting, and completely out of the blue, he wanted to tell me about this Japanese horror movie he saw on YouTube. He said it’s so good I need to watch it. So, you know I will.”

Read on for all the winners (and some of their reactions!) at the 10th Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.

With his trailblazing run of feature films and TV show episodes dating back to the 1980s and spanning to the present day, Ernest Dickerson has helped to pave the way for the likes of Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta by showing that horror cinema knows no color lines nor cultural barriers.

2025 PROOF Film Festival Returns to American Cinematheque

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

In 2023, the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles launched the first edition of PROOF, a short film festival dedicated to showcasing movies by emerging filmmakers hoping to use their shorts as proof-of-concepts for more ambitious features. This November, PROOF returns to the Cinematheque in an expanded form that includes special screenings, panels, development funds for award-winning shorts, and a “Pitch Deck Show & Tell.”

For the third edition of PROOF, screenings of the proof-of-concept shorts will run alongside centerpiece programming that includes “Film Financing Today,” a panel that will discuss how projects are getting made in today’s shifting entertainment landscape, and “Next Steps: From a Short to a Feature,” a returning PROOF signature panel spotlighting filmmakers who have successfully expanded short-form work into features or television.

Building on that idea of exploring how filmmakers have leveraged shorts into feature film work, the festival will also host the Los Angeles premiere of “Atropia.” The winner of the Dramatic Feature Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance, “Atropia” was originally a short film before it evolved into a full-length feature, and both the short and the feature will screen at PROOF. Writer/director Hailey Gates and star Alia Shawkat will appear for an in-person Q&A between the short film and the feature film.

This year, PROOF will also present “Pitch Deck Show & Tell” selections, an event that will give filmmakers the opportunity to present their pitch decks and project ideas to a live audience of peers, industry professionals, and potential collaborators. Presenting both feature and series concepts, participants will have five minutes to pitch after which they’ll receive real-time feedback from filmmakers, producers, and executives to help refine their projects and take them to the next stage.

As in previous years, however, the festival’s primary mission is to empower the next generation of cinematic storytellers by providing a forum for their proof-of-concept shorts. These shorts will be eligible for awards given by a jury featuring Miranda Sarah Einy (producer, “Happy Place”), Rachel Goldfinger (creative executive, Playgrounds), Sarah Marie Flores (creative executive, Anarchists United), Remy Solomon (writer and content creator), Brett Robinson (development executive), Liz Sargent (writer/director), Riley Chapman (coordinator, New Line Cinema), Sara Koch (casting director), Kesila Childers (producer and development executive), Aisling Scott Lynch (creative executive, Fourth Wall), Reiko Napier Moreno (independent producer/manager), and Yuky Shen (executive assistant, Kindred Spirit).

Five juried awards will be presented at the festival’s end, along with one audience choice award. The newest juried award is the “Shot on Film” Award sponsored by Kodak. The award will be granted to a filmmaker that shot their project either partially or completely on film, and they will receive an in-kind grant of $5,000 of Kodak Motion Picture Film Stock and/or Processing.

In addition, the newly created PROOF Development Fund will provide unrestricted grants to the winners of the festival, intended to directly support key next steps in their creative journeys — whether that’s bringing on a line producer, hiring a casting director, securing legal counsel, attending markets and festivals, or funding other early development needs. The 2025 Grand Jury Prize winner will receive $2,500, with additional grant money available for other festival awardees.

The festival will run November 7 – 9 at The Culver Theater in Culver City. Individual tickets to screenings, blocks, and panels are now on sale at the American Cinematheque‘s website.

Anupam Kher on 30 years of DDLJ: The film gave the world the coolest father during 90s

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Three decades since Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge first lit up the screens, yet the love for the film continues to grow with every generation. Looking back at the phenomenon, actor Anupam Kher, who played the warm and witty father to Shah Rukh Khan’s Raj, says he always knew the film was going to be extraordinary. “Yes, I knew from the beginning that DDLJ was a very special film,” he recalls. “It’s not about how many years it ran, but the fact that it changed the grammar and rhythm of Indian cinema. That’s what makes it a cult film.”

SRK and Anupam Kher

Reminiscing about the film’s premiere, Kher shares an unforgettable moment. “When the screening ended, there was complete silence for almost a minute, it felt like six hours. Everyone was just absorbing what they had witnessed. And then, the whole theatre erupted in applause. It was a standing ovation that just didn’t end. That’s when we knew this film had touched something deeper.”

The film, directed by Aditya Chopra, broke several cinematic conventions especially the idea of a rebellious hero defying parents. “It broke the myth,” says Kher. “Raj waits for the girl’s father’s permission instead of eloping with her. That was revolutionary for its time.”

Among the many memories from the film, one stands out for Anupam Kher, the iconic “Hum toh hindustan mein fail hue the… tune toh London mein fail hoke dikha diya!” scene between him and Shah Rukh Khan. “That scene was special. Shah Rukh is very good with improvisation, and we had a lot of fun experimenting. The entire shoot was full of warmth and camaraderie,” he says.

Anupam’s portrayal of a cool, supportive father became an instant favourite. “People still tell me, ‘I wish my father was like you in DDLJ,’” he laughs. “Before that, audiences had never seen such a father on screen; someone who was a friend, a motivator, and not just an authority figure. DDLJ gave 90s its coolest father figure.”

He further adds, how his bond with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, has not really changed over the years. “Our bond remains the same. Back then, there were no vanity vans, no mobile phones, no managers or security guards. We built relationships with our hearts, not our schedules. We knew each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and emotions. Those connections were real,” says Anupam Kher, adding: “I always say some relationships are like a pause button, you just press play and continue from where you left off.”

Despite having started with an iconic role in Saaransh at the age of 28, Kher feels his best work has come in recent years. “I’m doing some of my finest work now. Whether it’s smaller films or bigger ones, I’m enjoying every moment of it.”

Reflecting on how the industry has evolved, Kher notes, “Every era has its beauty. In those days, we had time to build personal relationships because there were no distractions. Today’s generation has other advantages — information, access, technology. We didn’t have Google or ChatGPT,” he laughs. “I’ve learned more from technology now than I ever did before.”

EXCLUSIVE: Ayushmann Khurrana States His ‘Thamma Is Massier Than Lokah’ Comment Was Misinterpreted; Says, “I’m A Fan of That Film, I Love It”

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Thamma – the fifth film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, is all set to release on October 21 and the film’s lead actors are busy promoting it across platforms. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles, the Aditya Sarpotdar directorial is based on the supernatural mythical Indian folklore creatures betaals.

During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble host Ankita Bhalla, ‘Alok Goyal’ Ayushmann Khurrana got candid about many things including his role in the film, playing Prem in Sooraj Barjatya’s next and creating controversy with a statement recently. For the unversed, Khurrana recently compared Thamma and Lokah. The actor has now reacted to the statement being taken out of context and being blown out of proportion. Read on to know all he said

Talking about his comment Thamma being massier than Lokah being blown out of proportion, Ayushmann Khurrana said, “Of course it is.”

Stating that it was misinterpreted, he continued, “I’m a fan of that film. There’s no doubt (it’s an amazing film), everyone will agree. What I meant to say was that Hindi speaking market mein – like I was shooting in Allahabad waha Lokah release nahi hui hi. Main dhekhna chahta tha par waha release hi anhi hui thi par waha Thamma paunch jayegi. Maine Mumbai mein aake dhekhi hai (Lokha), I wish waha bhi release hui hoti.”

He added, “I loved that film. More power to Dulquer Salmaan (producer), Kalyani Priyadarshan (actor) and the entire team. I really enjoyed the film.” He signed off by saying in Hindi, “I feel Thamma will benifit from the success of Lokah.”

Talking Ayushmann Khurrana’s statement, the actor was quoted saying, “We are high on comedy. Though I enjoyed Lokah, but I also feel that…I was shooting in Allahabad at that time, and it was not released there. So ours is a more massy film because it penetrates down to the Hindi-speaking markets also. Lokah could be a good induction for certain multiplex audiences towards this thing, but we have a different genesis, different situations, and it’s a different story. But there’s hardly any similarities.”

Other Israel Film Festival 2025 Lineup

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

As we approach the end of a year in which the Israel-Palestine conflict and the war in Gaza have found their way into many film industry debates — from the Film Workers for Palestine petition signed by over 4,000 Hollywood professionals calling for the boycott of Israeli film institutions to the ongoing controversy over MUBI’s investment from Sequoia Capital, which also invested in three Israeli defense companies — the Other Israel Film Festival is attempting to offer some common ground. The festival, which aims to offer a nuanced perspective on Israeli life by programming the work of both Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers, has announced the lineup for its 19th annual edition, which will once again take place at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan in November.

The festival will begin with the North American premiere of “The Sea,” Israel’s official Oscar submission from director Shai Carmeli-Pollak that follows a Palestinian boy who sneaks into Israel in an attempt to see the sea. The rest of the programming includes a mix of narrative and documentary films about Israel and Palestine, many of which deal with the aftermath of the October 7 attacks, such as Nurit Kedar’s “I Cried in Gaza,” Stephen Apkon’s “There Is Another Way,” and Jérôme Sesquin’s “Israel: Ministers of Chaos.”

“At a time when both governments and the public are working to silence Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers, we are committed to amplifying their voices,” Isaac Zablocki, executive director of the Other Israel Film Festival said in a statement. “Film and conversation remain the most powerful tools for cultural change.”

The festival did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for further comment.

The 2025 Other Israel Film Festival runs from November 6-13 at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan. Keep reading for the complete lineup, with language about the films provided by the festival.

It was Israel’s great political experiment in the West Bank and Gaza before the intifada. Tahsin Mansour, once mayor of the Palestinian village of Azzoun, now lives isolated by war and a roadblock that turned his home into an enclave. Reflecting on his role in the Village Leagues—an Israeli-backed attempt at Palestinian-Israeli peace—he recalls both the promise of diplomacy and the devastating backlash, as members were denounced as traitors and persecuted.

Lucrecia Martel’s ‘Landmarks’ Wins Best Film

Lucrecia Martel‘s documentary “Landmarks” (“Nuestra Tierra”) was awarded best film in the official competition of this year’s London Film Festival.

“Landmarks” explores the murder of Indigenous leader Javier Chocobar and the legacy of colonialism in Latin America. Of selecting the film, the competition jury — which was led by president Elizabeth Karlsen — said: “With deep empathy and extraordinary journalistic and cinematic rigor, the director Lucrecia Martel dives deep into the events surrounding the 2009 murder of the Chuschagasta leader Javier Chocobar, in Argentina’s Tucumán Province. In foregrounding present-day voices and neglected histories, Martel emerges with a portrait of — and for — an Indigenous community, and grants them a measure of the justice the courts have long denied them. Within a remarkably strong competition, our jury is proud to honor this singular achievement.”

Elsewhere, Vincho Nchogu’s “One Woman One Bra” — a humorous account of one woman’s fight to keep her ancestral land — was awarded the Sutherland Award for best first feature. David Bingong’s “The Travelers,” an intimate and hopeful account of the dangerous journey taken by a group of migrants from Cameroon to Europe, won the documentary competition. The short film competition winner was Said Zagha’s “Coyotes,” which follows a Palestinian doctor’s journey after Israeli soldiers interrupt her commute home.

London Film Festival comes to a close on Sunday night with the U.K. premiere of Julia Jackman’s fantasy fairytale “100 Nights of Hero.” Meanwhile, voting for the LFF Audience Awards will continue through Monday and the winners of best feature film and British feature film will be announced soon.
