Oncologist says ‘persistent back pain’ can be early warning sign of lung cancer; shares when you should worry

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints and is usually linked to strain, poor posture, or lifestyle habits. However, experts caution that in some cases, it could point to something more serious. HT Lifestyle has reached out to experts to know the possible hidden causes of persistent back pain, including when it may signal underlying conditions such as lung cancer. (Also read: Oncologist says ‘men over 50’ should never ignore these early warning signs of prostate cancer )

Persistent back pain? It could be a sign of lung cancer, experts warn. (Shutterstock)

Back pain and lung cancer: When to worry

“Back pain is a day-to-day complaint often invariably linked to heavy lifting, posture issues or ageing, mattress issues, which are usually relieved with OTC pain killers, muscle relaxants, but when it persists, then you need to think. It can be an early indicator of cancer. Lung cancer is a disease characterised by uncontrolled, unregulated, unchecked growth of cells in the lungs, which might spread to other parts of the body, including the axial system (spine, pelvis and other bones), causing back pain,” says Dr. Sunny Jain, Sr. Consultant and HOD, Oncology, Accord Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad NCR.

As per a 2024 study by H. Haryati et al., in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 30–40% of patients develop bone metastases, with vertebral involvement being among the most common, often leading to spinal cord compression. Research suggests that lung cancer accounts for about 15% of all cases of cancer-related cord compression. Pain is also a frequent complaint among lung cancer patients.

For instance, a Canadian study involving over 13,000 stage IV NSCLC patients reported pain in approximately 68.5% of cases. Similarly, another study that enrolled 533 lung cancer patients found that nearly 240 patients (45%) experienced pain during the course of their disease.

Warning signs that should not be ignored

According to Dr. Sunny, here’s when you should worry:

• If you have constant, deep, and worsening pain at night or during rest that is not relieved by routine treatments like physiotherapy or painkillers.

• If the pain is accompanied by other warning signs of lung cancer, such as chronic cough, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, breathlessness, or coughing up blood.

Early diagnosis of lung cancer can greatly improve outcomes. As the saying goes, “Eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know.” So, keep your eyes and mind open, stay informed, stay fit, and don’t hesitate to see your doctor if needed.

How lung cancer can cause back pain

“When lung cancers grow, they sometimes invade nearby structures or spread to the bones, especially the spine,” explains Dr Kamran Ali, Principal Consultant, Lung Transplant and Thoracic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi.

“Tumours can irritate nerves, compress vertebrae, or put pressure on ribs. Pancoast tumours near the lung apex may affect nerves running through the shoulder and upper back, causing pain. Once cancer reaches the bones, the pain may worsen at night, resist painkillers, and progressively increase,” Dr Kamran.

While most back pain is harmless, you should seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Pain that is persistent, lasting more than a few weeks, especially new or worsening upper back pain.
  • Pain that doesn’t improve with rest, physiotherapy, or usual care.
  • Pain with other lung cancer warning signs — chronic cough, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue.
  • Shoulder pain, hoarseness, arm swelling or numbness, which may indicate tumour involvement of nerves.

Unfortunately, lung cancer is often diagnosed late in India, when treatment options are limited and outcomes poorer. Early diagnosis can allow for surgery, targeted therapies, and better survival rates.

As Dr Sunny points out, “Eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know. Awareness about less obvious symptoms like back pain can make the difference.”

If you or someone you know has persistent back pain combined with respiratory symptoms or unexplained weight loss, don’t ignore it. Consult a doctor for:

  • A detailed history and physical examination
  • Imaging tests (X-ray, CT scan, MRI)
  • Bone scan if required

“Early evaluation helps rule out serious causes and ensures timely treatment if needed. Back pain is rarely a sign of lung cancer in its early stages. But when it follows certain patterns, persistent, unexplained, and accompanied by other warning signs, it must not be dismissed as “just ageing” or “work strain.” Staying attentive, asking the right questions, and seeking timely care can make all the difference,” concludes Dr Sunny.

Can young girls get PCOS before first period? Gynaecologist shares 4 early signs parents should watch for

Can young girls get PCOS before first period? Gynaecologist shares 4 early signs parents should watch for

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is a hormonal disorder, shows up in women of menstruating age. But can the signs occur even before a girl gets her first period? To confirm this, HT Lifestyle reached out to an expert.

Some risk factors make little girls more vulnerable to PCOS, even before their periods. (PC: Freepik)

ALSO READ: Nutritionist shares 4 tips on how women with PCOS can enjoy coffee without worsening symptoms

Consultant gynaecologist Dr Deepali Lodh, obstetrician and infertility expert at AIMS Hospital in Dombivli, shared that indeed, there’s a possibility of some early warning signs of PCOS that can appear even before their first period.

She said, “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that usually becomes more obvious after a girl starts menstruating. However, according to various studies as well, early signs may appear before the first period, often in late childhood or early puberty.”

Early signs of PCOS

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal disorders among young girls, but it can be managed with the help of a good lifestyle, like a proper diet and regular exercise, along with medical intervention. And the first step towards management begins by detecting the signs, and sometimes even before periods begin to occur, which indicates they are at high risk.

Dr Lodh shared these four signs parents need to watch out for in their daughters who are yet to begin their periods:

  1. Early puberty changes: Some girls will exhibit signs of puberty earlier than expected, such as breast development or pubic hair growth. These signs shouldn’t be ignored at all.
  2. Weight gain and obesity: Rapid weight gain, especially around the abdomen, can be a risk factor for future PCOS in girls. Don’t just attribute this weight gain to poor eating habits and the absence of exercise. It will need timely evaluation.
  3. Skin issues: Suffering from acne, oily skin, or dark patches on the neck and underarms (acanthosis nigricans) are some of the signs that a girl may have insulin resistance. This can further point out PCOS. So, stay vigilant!
  4. Excess hair growth: Unusual hair growth on the face, chest, or back (hirsutism) before menstruation can be caused by a hormonal imbalance that can be linked to PCOS.

Further, she mentioned the importance of parental intervention, as these are signs that, according to the gynaecologist, ‘cannot be ignored’, and prompt medical attention needs to be sought.

Genetic risk factor?

In addition to the visible signs, the young girl in childhood or early puberty, there’s also a genetic component to consider. Dr Lodh said, “A mother or sister with PCOS increases the chances of the child developing it later.” So if the mother or elder menstruating sibling has PCOS, they need to be more cautious, as the child is genetically predisposed to develop PCOS. This means regular monitoring of their hormonal health to reduce future risks.

To avoid these problems from escalating, Dr. Lodh recommended that young girls showing early PCOS signs focus on a healthy lifestyle, follow a nutritious diet, exercise regularly, maintain weight within a normal range, and manage stress with the help of yoga. If parents spot these signs, the gynaecologist reiterated that they should visit a doctor for tests, as, according to her, it is better to pay attention right from the beginning to prevent problems in the future.

Broadway’s ‘Cabaret’ Closes Early Amid Billy Porter’s Sepsis Diagnosis

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club is closing its doors earlier than planned following Billy Porter’s sudden departure from the production due to health concerns.

On Sunday (Sept. 7), producers of the Broadway revival announced that the 55-year-old Tony Award-winning actor and musician, who stars as the Emcee, is recovering from a “serious case” of sepsis, according to People. While Porter is expected to make a full recovery, doctors have advised him to rest.

“Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent,” wrote producer Adam Speers of ATG Productions. “We wish Billy a speedy recovery and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future.”

As a result, the acclaimed revival of the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical — which began its Broadway run in April 2024 with Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin — will now conclude its engagement at New York City’s August Wilson Theatre on Sept. 21, nearly a month earlier than its originally scheduled closing date of Oct. 19.

Porter and actress-singer Marisha Wallace, who stars as Sally Bowles, joined the production on July 22 after a run in London’s West End.

In the Broadway show’s final weeks, the role of the Emcee will be performed in rotation by longtime alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino, with the performance schedule to be shared on Cabaret’s official social media channels.

Originally debuting on Broadway in 1966 and later adapted into the iconic 1972 film, Cabaret follows a group of characters navigating the final days of Weimar Germany, embracing the hedonistic, impoverished lifestyles of Berlin while ignoring the Nazi party’s rise to power.

Porter’s departure comes amid declining box office performance for the high-cost production. Grosses have dipped to around $500,000, with audience capacity falling below 70% in recent weeks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

From the Archives: The Early Days of Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

“Meeting Your Match,” by Dodie Kazanjian, was originally published in the August 2004 issue of Vogue.

For more of the best from Vogue’s archive, sign up for our Nostalgia newsletter here.

From their hilltop estate in Tiburon, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf can look across the bay and see San Francisco preening itself in the sun, while one tower of the Golden Gate Bridge rises magically above a puffy cloud bank. The tennis world’s royal couple—the most spectacular example of a marital merger between two number-one athletes—have spent the whole morning being photographed for Vogue. In their mid-30s, tanned and fit, they both project the silky, contained energy of great athletes, athletes who, though blissfully young by ordinary standards, are already considered old in their chosen profession.

The most dominant woman player of her time, Steffi won 22 Grand Slam titles before she retired in 1999, at the age of 30. This July, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Andre has won eight Grand Slams so far, but at the astonishingly advanced age (for tennis) of 34, he could yet win another. Tennis is increasingly a young man’s game these days, and the odds against Agassi are daunting, but it’s still too early to count him out. His phenomenal comeback is already a tennis legend. In 1997, having slipped to 141 in the rankings, he remade himself through an all-out regimen of rigorous physical training; by 1999, he was number one in the world, and he’s been at or near the top ever since, winning the Australian Open last year and more than holding his own against the newest generation of power hitters. “I have an insane amount of respect for him,” Andy Roddick said recently. “The way he competes—he treats every match like it’s Armageddon.”

Andre, his coach Darren Cahill, his lawyer and close friend Todd Wilson, and Gene Marshall, a Las Vegas friend who is also helping him train, are barreling over the Golden Gate Bridge in Andre’s Lincoln Navigator, with me following anxiously in my rented Pontiac, trying to keep them in sight. Andre, who drives with the same speed and confidence he brings to the court, is headed for the Olympic Club in San Francisco. He’s getting ready for the French Open, which starts in two weeks, and he needs to practice on a clay surface like the ones at Roland Garros. His own court in Tiburon has a hard surface, and there aren’t any clay courts in Las Vegas, his real home, in good enough shape. We park on the road above the tennis courts at this famous club, whose golf course has often been host to the U.S. Open. For the next hour and a half, Darren feeds him backhands and forehands, and Andre rockets them back, clipping the lines in the corners, grunting vigorously on every shot. “That’s great tennis,” Darren says more than once. (Not great enough, apparently; in the weeks after my visit, Agassi got knocked out in the first round at the French Open and two other European tournaments—the first time since August 1997 he’s lost three straight opening-round matches—and then withdrew from Wimbledon, citing a hip injury.) But Andre is not entirely happy with his game today. His rhythm is a little off, he says, and the surface is too powdery.

Eye surgeon says ‘signs of poor eyesight in children are often overlooked’; shares tips for early detection and care | Health

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Children often can’t voice when their vision isn’t right, making it tricky for parents to spot early eye problems. Dr. Jay Goyal, Eye Surgeon, LASIK specialist, retina specialist and Director at Surya Eye Hospital, Mumbai, shares with HT Lifestyle the warning signs to watch for and simple steps parents can take to protect their child’s eyesight. (Also read: Eye surgeon warns ‘kids under 5 are spending twice the recommended screen time’; shares tips to protect their vision )

Dr. Jay Goyal highlights warning signs of vision problems in children for parents and teachers. (Freepik)

“Every day, nearly 34 lakh children in India go to school with uncorrected vision. Many of them have refractive problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, which makes it hard for them to see clearly in class. As a result, they often end up learning less than their peers,” says Dr. Jay.

He adds, “The real challenge, however, is that signs of poor eyesight in children are often overlooked. When vision problems go undetected, they can affect not just academic performance but also daily activities. This is why parents and teachers need to be aware of children’s eye health and watch for signs that a child may need glasses.”

Signs your child is struggling with vision problems

Dr. Jay further lists a few signs that indicate your child may be experiencing vision problems and needs glasses:

1. Lack of concentration

Children with visual impairments soon become disinterested in long-term activities such as games or projects. They find these tasks difficult since they are unable to perceive things clearly. Moreover, kids with visual impairments refrain from reading, painting, playing games, or working on tasks requiring close attention. Your child can find it hard to see where they are on the page while they read, whether they are reading aloud or quietly. Kids may be discreet about their problems and choose not to tell you about them.

2. Holding handheld electronics too close to the eyes

Poor vision may be indicated by sitting too near the television or holding handheld electronics too close to the eyes. Myopia, often known as nearsightedness, causes people to see well up close but poorly at a distance. An image becomes larger and more lucid when an object is brought near.

3. Excessive eyerubbing

Your child may be experiencing eye strain or fatigue if they rub their eyes excessively. This could be an indication of various eye disorders, such as allergic conjunctivitis.

4. Eye pain or headaches

Your child may be overexerting their eyes to improve their blurred vision if they complain of headaches or eye pain at the end of the day.

5. Squinting

Squinting could indicate that your child has refractive error, a condition that impairs eye focus. Your toddler might be able to momentarily increase an object’s focus and clarity by squinting.

6. Covering one eye or cocking the head

For better clarity, the child may tilt their head or cover one eye to change the angle of vision. This could mean that your child has amblyopia, commonly referred to as lazy eye, one of the most prevalent eye conditions in kids, or that their eyes are misaligned.

Routine eye exams in schools are essential for identifying visual issues in children. (Freepik)
Routine eye exams in schools are essential for identifying visual issues in children. (Freepik)

What to do if your child has vision problems

Dr Jay explains, “Routine eye exams must be performed in schools to identify visual issues in youngsters. The parents must also take their children for regular eye exams. Seeing an eye care professional for a thorough eye exam is crucial if your child fails a vision screening. A comprehensive eye examination will also check the clarity and sharpness of vision.”

“It may also look for myopia, signs of more serious eye problems like depth perception, strabismus (crossed eyes), and eye alignment. Treatment by an ophthalmologist must begin as soon as possible if any of these issues are discovered,” he says.

“Optimal vision plays a vital role in a child’s learning and overall development. Poor eyesight can silently limit a child’s ability to perform well in school, participate in activities, and build confidence. It is therefore important that parents and teachers pay attention to early signs and ensure timely eye check-ups to help children reach their full potential. Protecting a child’s eye health today is an investment in their brighter, more successful tomorrow,” Dr Jay concludes.

Karen Huger Seen Leaving Prison After Early Release For DUI

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Roommates, hold ya wigs cause the Grande Dame is back! New videos show Karen Huger leaving a Maryland prison six months early. She was sentenced to two years in prison, with one year suspended for multiple DUI-related convictions. She hasn’t spoken out since her release early Tuesday morning, but her release footage shows her waving at a few media cameras waiting outside.

Karen Huger Spotted Leaving Prison

According to TMZ, Karen Huger left the Montgomery County Detention Center in Maryland at 10 a.m. ET. Video footage from 7NewsDC journalist Jade Lawson shows Karen wearing a white or cream-colored, long-sleeved top. She briefly stuck her hand out the window to wave from the black truck. However, the vehicle kept pushing forward and didn’t pause for commentary from the ‘Real Housewives of Potomac’ star.

Legally, What’s Next For Karen?

In addition to her two-year sentence, Karen Huger had to pay $2,900 in fines. Now that she’s released, she’s banned from driving for the next year and has to visit a parole officer for the next five. The judge remanded her into custody immediately after the sentencing hearing in February.

As previously reported, she picked up the DUI charges after becoming intoxicated, slamming into a road median with her vehicle, striking a crosswalk sign at an intersection, and then a parking sign before finally pulling over. Last December, bodycam footage surfaced of Karen Huger the night of the March 2024 incident. Her husband, Ray, was present and also engaging with the police.

Will The ‘RHOP’ Women Welcome Her Back?

Her release comes just in time for her to catch (and possibly feature in???) the tenth season of the Bravo series, which airs on October 5. Like Karen, the network hasn’t revealed its plans for Huger regarding her OG slot in ‘RHOP.’ If she’s not seen in S10, the Grande Dame could get a second shot by popping out at the reunion. But, for now, only time seems to be willing to tell!

In an episode aired in March–after she was already locked up–Karen admitted to not recognizing herself when she had to watch the bodycam footage in court. “I didn’t know her,” Huger said about herself while talking to her husband, Ray, in the episode.

If and when she returns, will the ‘Real Housewives of Potomac’ ladies welcome her back with open arms? She’s got Gizelle Bryant, for one, on her side! The other OG ‘RHOP’ star expressed “concern for [Karen’s] safety” on the same day Huger got sentenced. However, by April, Bryant was not worried at all! She assured the fans that Huger is doing just fine, which she learned after talking to someone close to the star.

“From what I understand, they love her up in where she is right now. They absolutely love her. They are loving the Grande Dame! And you know she’s running that thing,” Gizelle said.
