Bobby Farrelly’s Terminally Tame Teen Comedy

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Both an obvious product of ’90s nostalgia and the definitive cure for it, Bobby Farrelly‘s terminally innocuous “Driver’s Ed” can be described as a youth comedy, but whose youth? Though technically it is set in the current day, because smartphones exist and someone mentions Ritalin, the sensibilities of both director and screenplay (by Thomas Moffett) are so trapped in the past that the whole movie feels like a defrosted caveman sporting a pair of earbuds — which is essentially the plot of 1992’s “Encino Man,” apropos of nothing much except that after “Driver’s Ed,” all your comparisons will for a time gesture toward pre-millennial pop-cultural artifacts.

It’s hard to remember that era being quite so unfunny, though, nor quite so tame, which is especially disappointing given that Farrelly, working with his brother Peter on films like “There’s Something About Mary” and “Dumb and Dumber” was responsible for some of its best and most iconically risqué gags. Nothing in “Driver’s Ed” even aspires to “Mary”‘s semen-hair-gel moment, and the closest we get to the “frank or beans” sequence is some frat dude at a party who randomly punches guys in the groin, causing them unhilariously to double over in pain. The rest of “Driver’s Ed” — aside from some effortful F-bombing and the occasional reference to boners — is just as wholesome as apple pie used to be before “American Pie” (1999) defiled that simile forever.

Speaking of wholesome, here comes Jeremy (Sam Nivola), the film’s clean-cut, starry-eyed, curly headed lead, an 18-year-old high school senior determined to make a success of a long-distance relationship with his recently graduated girlfriend Samantha. Movie-mad Jeremy (whose conversation is peppered with namechecks of only the most canonically revered of Hollywood films) is so convinced he and Sam will stay together until he can graduate and join her at college, that when she drunk-dials him and expresses some doubt, he goes into a tailspin. The next day, during driver’s ed class, left momentarily in the instruction car by the substitute teacher played by Kumail Nanjiani in two broken-arm casts for wackiness, Jeremy decides on a whim to steal the vehicle and drive the three hours to see Sam in person.

However, in the car with him are three classmates: prim, rule-obeying valedictorian Aparna (Mohana Krishan); apathetic, drug-dealing stoner Yoshi (Aidan Laprete); and perky yet cynical Evie (Sophie Telegadis), whose feathered, flippy, pastel-barette bob gives extreme mid-’90s Drew Barrymore/Reese Witherspoon and does not give it back. You do not need to be a hair historian to know that no young person has worn her hair like this, outside of “come as your mom when she was your age” costume parties, in about 30 years.

Anyway, despite the group not being particularly close, and despite all three others expressing their disapproval of Jeremy’s plan in no uncertain terms, they all suddenly decide to join him because that way we get to have a movie. Once on the road, they have a bunch of bizarre yet oddly flat encounters — with a three-legged cat, a robber, a cop, a refrigerated truck full of vintage furs and a hot lesbian with an open-top car and a large St. Bernard — before arriving at Sam’s college having learned some inevitable lessons about life, love and friendship. Meanwhile, the usually reliable Molly Shannon delivers an inexplicably manic performance of exasperated adult ineptitude as the school principal trying, with a lot of faffing about but very little urgency, to track the kids down.

To be strictly fair, “Driver’s Ed” doesn’t only reference the 1990s high school comedy. It also has an only too obvious yen for the 1980s, and specifically for “The Breakfast Club,” which is cribbed from here in a brief makeover scene and the cloyingly extended finale when the kids all marvel at just how much they’ve bonded. But while John Hughes’ soon-to-be-Criterion-approved classic has its implausibilities, it never attempts any setpiece as frankly ludicrous as the one in “Driver’s Ed” where three 2025 teenagers stand dumbly to one side while a fourth attempts to “hide” their beloved iPhones on a tiny ledge on a bridge over a river, with utterly predictable results.

Not that this is the fault of an appealing young cast gamely doing their best to inject energy and personality into inert, exposition-heavy, joke-light dialogue that could not sound less like the way modern teenagers talk if every second word was “rad.” “Everybody changes all the time,” Shannon’s principal scoffs at the doggedly faithful Jeremy at one point. It’s a shame that “Driver’s Ed” seems to believe that, in the decades since the high school comedy first came of age, teenagers haven’t changed so much as a hair on their heads.

“They all live peacefully… and there’s nothing you can do about it!” Briarcliff Entertainment has unveiled the full official trailer for an animated adventure movie called Stitch Head, based on the beloved graphic novel series of the same name. This animated Frankenstein riff is ready to hit theaters nationwide at the end of October just in time for Halloween. Meet some friendly monsters! From director Steve Hudson, the story follows Stitch Head, a small creature awoken by a Mad Professor in a castle to protect the professor’s other creations from the people of Grubbers Nubbin. Featuring tons of other fun monsters, too. “Stitch Head was the first creation to be born—and the first to be forgotten.” A whimsical, heartfelt twist on the Frankenstein legend, Stitch Head is a comedy adventure for monsters of every age. This animation creation features the voices of Asa Butterfield as Stitch Head, Joel Fry, Alison Steadman, Rob Brydon, Fern Brady, Tia Bannon, & Jamali Maddix. There’s tons of wacky, weird creature creations. And it’s a tale of friendship and kindness, about all these little monsters who aren’t the scary freaks they’re made out to be. Have a look.

You can rewatch the teaser trailer for Steve Hudson’s Stitch Head film right here for the first look again.

High above the little town of Grubbers Nubbin, in a castle laboratory, the maddest of all mad professors brings monstrous creations to (almost) life… and then promptly forgets all about them. So, who runs the castle? Who keeps the monsters in line, so the townsfolk don’t form an angry mob? That job falls to Stitch Head – the professor’s very first creation. He does it all, unnoticed and unthanked. But when a ramshackle freak show rolls into town, its sly owner, Fulbert Freakfinder, comes knocking, offering Stitch Head fame, fortune… and maybe even love. A whimsical, heartfelt twist on the Frankenstein legend. Stitch Head is written and directed by English actor / filmmaker Steve Hudson, director of the movies Co/Ma and True North previously, plus the series “Cranford”. Co-directed by Toby Genkel. Adapted from the graphic novel series created by Guy Bass. Produced by Sonja Ewers and Mark Mertens. Briarcliff Ent. debuts the animated Stitch Head movie in theaters nationwide starting October 29th, 2025 this fall. Who’s down? Look good?

‘Studio’ Leads Comedy, Drama Race Not Clear

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Even though Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys are just the start of three nights of awards for the best of primetime television, the wins have already been incredibly illuminative in determining where Television Academy voters’ heads are at — at least in certain categories.

For instance, “The Studio” has already broken the record for most Creative Arts Emmys given to a Comedy, and again, this was only Night One. Among its nine Emmys were wins for contemporary costumes, production design, casting, music supervision, picture editing, sound, and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for recurring cast member Bryan Cranston. The Apple TV+ series, which entered the competition as the most nominated freshman comedy of all time, only needs three more Emmy wins to break the record for most Comedy wins in a single year, which was set by “The Bear” last season.

Agnieszka Holland’s Franz

With this much below the line support, “The Studio” will likely reach that goal, as the series is a frontrunner for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Should the show also win Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series overall, it would mean co-creator and star Seth Rogen would tie the record for most Primetime Emmy wins for an individual in a single year (four). However, a couple of those are categories that his show’s main competition “Hacks” has won several times.

Rogen’s co-stars Ike Barinholtz, Catherine O’Hara, and Kathryn Hahn all have the opportunity to add to the show’s tally as well. Barinholtz in particular seems even more pegged to win, with the show’s “Thank you Sal Saperstein” bit coming full circle, with the people who worked on “The Studio” all exclaiming it when they won at the Creative Arts Emmys. (Note: Barinholtz’s main competition is “Shrinking” star Harrison Ford, who had never been nominated for an Emmy before.)

Jessica Lee Gagné winner of the Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) Award for 'Severence' at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater on September 06, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

While the Comedy categories all point to “The Studio” winning Outstanding Comedy Series, the Drama series wins were spread across several contenders. Nominations leader “Severance” still earned the lion’s share, with six wins, including Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series to Meritt Wever (who is now one of the rare actors to have won Emmys in Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series categories,) and Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) to IndieWire Honors recipient Jessica Lee Gagné (who happens to also be nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.)

The main competition for “Severance” has been HBO Max phenomenon “The Pitt,” which won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Shawn Hatosy, and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series — the latter being more predictive of what wins Outstanding Drama Series. But receiving even more Creative Arts Emmys, therefore giving credence that it could still be the dark horse for the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, is the final season of “Andor” on Disney+. The Star Wars series, which serves as a prequel to “Rogue One,” won four Emmys for its costume design, production design, picture editing, and visual effects. It’s worth noting however, that a couple of those categories specify fantasy/sci-fi, which separates the show from craft categories that most of its fellow Outstanding Drama Series nominees are in. One could still make the case for any of the three aforementioned dramas to win the main Emmy category come September 14.

Finally, in terms of the categories related to Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, the big takeaway is that HBO series “The Penguin” is a lot more competitive than people have been giving it credit for. It was second to “The Studio” in most wins of the night, having picked up eight Emmys in categories highlighting its makeup and hairstyling, costumes, sound, and visual effects. The makeup, costumes, and hairstyling in particular are so deeply tied to the performances of lead Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti that it gives hope that the former could actually still win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie over “Adolescence” co-creator and star Stephen Graham (who almost certainly will still receive an Emmy for writing the hit Netflix show), and that the latter is the definite frontrunner for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, even over former winner Michelle Williams.

Matthew Lewis winner of the Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for 'Adolescence' at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater on September 06, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

All that said, the groundwork is still laid for “Adolescence” to dominate the main Limited Series categories at the main Primetime Emmys. Its Creative Arts Emmy win for cinematography points to an incoming win for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and its casting win supports the notion that Owen Cooper, the series’ major discovery, is the one to beat in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Erin Doherty has also long been seen as a lock for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, despite being in only one episode, but “The Penguin” star Deirdre O’Connell could be the spoiler there, as she played a larger role in the HBO series.

All in all, Netflix actually had a great night despite “Adolescence” being their only series mentioned above. Looking at other popular categories, the streaming service won Outstanding Television Movie for “Rebel Ridge,” Outstanding Animated Program for “Arcane: League of Legends” (the first streaming series to win the category multiple times), and even several wins for “Bridgerton” Season 3, including Julie Andrews finally winning Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her portrayal of Lady Whistledown after three previous nominations.

Adam Saunders in Coming-of-Middle-Age Comedy ‘Re-Election’ Trailer

“Now he’s older, not necessarily wiser.” Ain’t that the truth. Picturehouse has revealed the official trailer for an indie comedy film titled Re-Election, a sort of modern riff on the 1999 comedy classic Election. It’s set for release in October starting at limited theaters and with more screens before it’s on VOD. Desperate to re-discover the mojo he lost as a teenager, a disappointed middle-aged man re-enrolls in high school in order to run for class president again. But after 30 years, things have changed a bit. Of course, Gen Z rules now. A nostalgic coming-of-middle-age comedy from director-writer-producer Adam Saunders – this also stars Saunders as Jimmy, along with Tony Danza, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Kym Whitley, and Rizwan Manji. This also reminds me of the Adam Sandler 90s classic Billy Madison, but it looks like a whole different story here. “Re-Election is a throwback comedy that audiences need & will enjoy this fall,” they say. Vote Jimmy!

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Adam Saunders’ indie film Re-Election, direct from YouTube:

Re-Election Film Poster

High school haunts everyone, in one way or another. For Jimmy Bauer (Adam Saunders), it was losing the race for class president during his senior year back in 1995, which caused him to drop out. He’s now a 40-something underdog stuck working in a memorabilia store owned by his dad Stanislaw (co-starring TV comedy icon Tony Danza). So Jimmy decides to go back to school for his missing class credits — and win the election he’s sure will make his life right. But after 30 years, things have changed a bit, and with the help of his new Gen-Alpha friend Noa & former classmate-turned-girlfriend Ama, Jimmy learns that it’s not how we start a journey that matters — it’s how we finish it. Re-Election is both written and directed by American producer / filmmaker Adam Saunders, making his second feature film after directing Dotty & Soul previously. Produced by Erika Hampson, Mac Hendrickson, & Saunders. Picturehouse will release the Re-Election film in select US theaters starting October 10th, 2025 coming up this fall. Anyone into this?

Param Sundari Review: Love, Comedy And Beauty Of Kerala But The Story Is Weak | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 August 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s film ‘Param Sundari’ is now in the theatres. This is a romantic comedy film, which shows a love story with a combination of North and South. The film is directed by Tushar Jalota, and Sanjay Kapoor and Manjot Singh have also played important roles in it. The film was promoted a lot. Its story, its subject and its music, along with the chemistry between Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, were discussed a lot. The promotion of the film was also put in a lot of effort. So let’s see how the film Param Sundari is.

Story
The story is very simple. The story of the film Param Sundari revolves around Siddharth Malhotra, who belongs to a rich family. The character named Param Sachdev, played by Siddharth Malhotra, asks for help from his father. In return for help, Sanjay Kapoor, playing the role of his father, gives him a challenge. Param wants to launch a dating app. His father challenges him for a month that if he finds a life partner through this app, he will invest in it. To fulfil this, Param sets out for Kerala with his friend Jaggi (Manjot Singh). Here he meets Sundari, i.e. Janhvi Kapoor. After this, many situations arise in which Param and Sundari get trapped. What will happen next in IMAX? You can guess this now.

Writing and Direction
The film Param Sundari has been written by Aarsh Vora, Tushar Jalota and Gaurav Mishra. Tushar Jalota has directed the film. If we talk about the story, there is nothing new. This is a romantic comedy film, in which a love story with a combination of North and South will be seen. The film looks good at some places. The beautiful locations of Kerala look good on screen. The cinematography of the film is colorful and grand, especially in the filming of the songs. The first part of the film is fine but the second part is particularly weak. After the interval, the film seems to be dragged due to which the pace of the film slows down.

Acting
The audience may like the chemistry between Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor in the film Param Sundari. Both of them are seen together on screen for the first time. Siddharth Malhotra’s acting is fine. At some places, his cuteness and physique can attract the audience. Janhvi Kapoor’s work is good. In some scenes, she has overacted, but since the film is a comedy, it can be ignored. Sanjay Kapoor’s work is good. I liked Manjot’s work the most. His comic timing is good in the film.

Music
Sachin Jigar has given the music of this film. The music of the film Param Sundari is fine. Some songs are good. The song Pardesiya sung by Sonu Nigam is good to listen to, although this song seems to be inspired by Hariharan’s song Kehna Hi Kya.

Overall
The film Param Sundari has romance, comedy and the beauty of Kerala. Siddharth and Janhvi have chemistry but unfortunately the story made the film average. If you like Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s films, are their fan, then you can watch the film Param Sundari. But if you are looking for something new and unique, then you may be disappointed. The film gets 3 stars from Glamsham

Wit, Chaos, And Comedy: Ek Chatur Naar Trailer Promises An Unforgettable Ride With Divya Khossla And Neil Nitin Mukesh! | Glamsham.com

The wait is finally over as the trailer for the highly-expected comedy-thriller Ek Chatur Naar has been released and it’s a rollercoaster of madness, comedy, and methodical deception. Divya Khossla and Neil Nitin Mukesh are seen starring in leading roles in the film, which promises a plot full of mind games, secrets, and comedy that will leave audiences entertained till the final moment.

A Perfect Blend of Mystery and Madness

Directed by Umesh Shukla, Ek Chatur Naar delves into a world where everyone appears to have a different identity from the one they claim to be. The trailer capitalizes on the curiosity generated by the teaser by delving deeper into the warped chemistry between actors. Against the knife’s edge of manipulation and cunning, the tale weaves suspense with comedy, serving up a cocktail of high-stakes drama and clever one-liners.

Neil Nitin Mukesh infuses his character with a smooth, enigmatic twist, and Divya Khossla makes an appearance in a bold and intelligent avatar that keeps us guessing. As secrets begin to unravel and allegiances come into question, the movie balances its humor with taut tension, rendering the trailer a thrilling primer for what is to follow.

Power-Packed Ensemble Cast

Aside from the leads, Ek Chatur Naar has a great supporting cast that adds to the plot. The trailer teases glimpses of noted actors such as Chhaya Kadam, Sushant Singh, Rajniesh Duggal, Zakir Hussain, Yashpal Sharma, Heli Daruwala, Rose Sardana, and Geeta Agarwal Sharma all seemingly portraying characters with ulterior motives.

Their presence not only deepens the plot but also guarantees a gamut of performances from quirky to intense. With everybody keeping a secret, the story is like a puzzle, and the audience is encouraged to play along.

Behind the Scenes and Release Details

Directed by Umesh Shukla, who has given us films such as OMG – Oh My God! and 102 Not Out, this film comes from the house of T-Series and produced under the Merry Go Round Studios banner. The film is produced by Umesh Shukla, Ashish Wagh, and Zeeshan Ahmad, getting a trio of producers well experienced in making quality films with that added zing.

Releasing Soon

Ek Chatur Naar will be releasing in theatres on 12th September 2025. With its rich blend of suspense and wit, and a plot that constantly surprises, the movie is ready to be a genre-buster. Buckle up for a crazy, clever ride where brains are the survival mechanism.

Bradley Cooper & Will Arnett Team on Divorce Comedy

by jummy84 August 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Bradley Cooper’s found a sweet spot for himself, writing and directing movies about those who live and die on stage, but his next film looks like it’ll be a little lighter than Maestro. At the very least, Is This Thing On? is about a stand-up comedian, played by Will Arnett, who’s going through a divorce from his wife (Laura Dern) and trying to find the humor in it.

The official description, courtesy of Searchlight Pictures, says that “The film centers on Alex (Will Arnett) as he faces middle age and an impending divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family — forcing them to navigate co-parenting, identity, and whether love can take a new form.” The new trailer features Arnett’s Alex taking the stage, drawing the audience into his plight by stating the facts about his new living arrangement. In addition to Dern and Arnett, the cast includes Cooper, Andra Day, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, and Scott Icenogle.

Cooper became a prestige cinema darling with his first film, the A Star Is Born remake that got “Shallow” stuck in our heads for all of 2018, and received heaps of acclaim for his 2023 Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro. (He also made a surprise appearance in the Season 4 premiere of The Righteous Gemstones.)

“It seems like someone wanted all of us here…” Bleecker Street has debuted their full official trailer for a horror thriller dark comedy called Bone Lake, set to open in theaters starting in early October for anyone to enjoy. This film first premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, but didn’t show up at many other fests since then. When two young couples are mistakenly double-booked into the same vacation rental, their romantic weekend becomes a twisted maze of sex, lies, and survival. Directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan as her latest horror feature following Spoonful of Sugar and Fixation. Starring Maddie Hasson, Marco Pigossi, Alex Roe, Andra Nechita, Eliane Reis, and Clayton Spencer. This isn’t the first film about a double booked vacation rental, but it does look like it has a few other unique twists up its sleeves. What is this game they’re playing? The first teaser a few months ago is better than this trailer – which is more confusing than exciting.

Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Mercedes Bryce Morgan’s film Bone Lake, from YouTube:
