Alisha Chinai Recalls Industry Isolation After Sexual Harassment Case Against Anu Malik

Singer Alisha Chinai, one of the most prominent voices of the 1990s Indian pop scene, has revisited one of the most difficult chapters of her life — her 1996 sexual harassment case against music composer Anu Malik. In a recent interview with Zoom, the Made in India singer revealed how speaking out cost her dearly, both professionally and personally, as she was shunned by much of the industry soon after taking legal action.

Alisha shared that she was initially reluctant to take the matter to court, but it was her then-husband and manager, Rajesh Jhaveri, who urged her to speak up and stand her ground. “I believe they dismissed it outright. Ultimately, it’s a man’s domain, sadly. Well, it used to be. Now, it’s a woman’s domain,” she said. “At that time, I was married, and my former husband Rajesh was also overseeing much of my career. He was quite supportive of my perspective.”

At the height of her fame, Alisha had collaborated extensively with Anu Malik, delivering a number of hit songs that defined the era. However, once she filed the case, her work offers began to dry up rapidly. “A lot of my work just stopped,” she said, adding that no one from the film or music industry came forward to support her. “But I told myself, forget it — it didn’t bother me that they isolated me.”

Despite the professional setback, Alisha maintained her resilience and chose to rebuild her life quietly. Years later, she and Anu Malik found themselves crossing paths again — this time on a film project. In 2003, they reunited for Ishq Vishk, a film starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, which featured the popular track Chot Dil Pe Lagi. The two would later appear together as judges on Indian Idol, a collaboration that surprised many given their fraught history.

Addressing that unexpected reconciliation, Alisha explained that it came only after Anu Malik personally apologised to her. “He did apologise, and I accepted it. Everyone makes mistakes,” she said, noting that she wanted to move forward and not let the bitterness of the past define her.

However, the story did not end there. When the #MeToo movement swept through India in 2018, several women in the entertainment industry came forward with similar allegations of misconduct against Anu Malik. Many of them reached out to Alisha for support, recalling her case as one of the earliest instances of a woman in Indian music taking a stand against harassment. Though initially hesitant, Alisha eventually spoke up in solidarity with the new wave of survivors. “I believed them,” she said, adding that she understood all too well the price that often comes with speaking out.

Alisha’s recollection serves as a reminder of the deeply entrenched gender power imbalance that existed in the entertainment industry in the 1990s. “At that time, it was still very much a man’s world. You didn’t have platforms, you didn’t have social media. You just had to face the consequences alone,” she noted.

A Pioneer of Indian Pop

Despite the challenges she faced, Alisha Chinai’s contribution to Indian music remains undeniable. A leading figure of the Indipop movement, she broke barriers with her 1995 album Made in India, composed by Biddu, which became one of the highest-selling pop records in the country. The album not only cemented her status as the “Queen of Indipop” but also redefined how female pop artists were perceived in India.

Over her decades-long career, Alisha collaborated with leading composers like Bappi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan, and Anu Malik, lending her distinctive voice to numerous Bollywood hits, from Kajra Re to Tinka Tinka. Known for her bold, trendsetting persona, she paved the way for a generation of female artists who followed.

Today, Alisha’s reflections offer a rare glimpse into the courage it took to stand up against systemic wrongs in a time when few dared to do so. While she admits the journey was isolating, her resilience and honesty continue to inspire — a reminder that truth, even when silenced, finds its echo years later.

Is Kneecap banned from Canada or not? NDP urges answer in high-profile case – National

The federal immigration minister is facing increasing pressure to clarify whether the Irish hip-hop group Kneecap is indeed banned from entering Canada, or if the Liberal official who announced the move was approved to make that assertion in a contentious social media post.

In a letter to Immigration Minister Lena Diab on Thursday, NDP MP Jenny Kwan, the party’s immigration critic, urged Diab to say whether the group is indeed banned after the minister and other officials have repeatedly refused to answer questions on the case for almost two weeks.

The band says it has yet to receive any official notice about an entry ban or denial of their electronic visa authorizations.

“Canadians and visitors to Canada deserve to know that they are not subject to arbitrary and politicized weaponization of public policy for political purposes,” Kwan wrote.

“We need to rebuild integrity into the system in this time of misinformation.”

Liberal MP Vince Gasparro, the parliamentary secretary for combating crime, announced on Sept. 19 “on behalf of the Government of Canada” that the band’s members had been deemed ineligible for entry ahead of scheduled concerts this month, based “on the advice of our officials.”

Kwan wants Diab to answer if the officials Gasparro referenced are in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and if she or other IRCC officials authorized Gasparro to speak on their behalf publicly.

The letter also asks if Kneecap were ever formally banned from entering Canada or if they are permitted to enter, and if the Prime Minister’s Office or any other government officials or agencies were involved in approving Gasparro’s announcement.

Kwan pressed Diab on some of those questions directly during question period on Thursday, but Diab declined to directly answer.

“If no one authorized it, can the minister advise what formal action will be taken to address this serious misrepresentation of authority? Canadians deserve to know,” Kwan said.

Diab responded by reading nearly verbatim a statement IRCC sent to Global News earlier this week — a message that has evolved in real time — that did not comment on Kneecap’s specific case.

“Persons seeking to come to Canada must meet eligibility and admissibility requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act,” Diab said.

“Each case is assessed individually. Entry to Canada may be refused for a number of reasons. Individuals whose electronic travel application has been declined can re-apply by doing an ETA once they address the reasons that it has been refused.”

Should a probe ask whether MP ‘lied?’

Kwan’s letter adds to the pressure on the Liberal government to explain why no further explanation or official notice has been provided to the band or the public since.

Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman told Global News in an interview Wednesday she would support an investigation into whether Gasparro “lied” in announcing the apparent entry ban or if he contradicted official policy.

“I would suspect that in any other workplace you would be reprimanded for that. And in this case, you wouldn’t be a parliamentary secretary anymore,” she said.

A spokesperson for Gasparro’s office said he had “no further comment” in an email Wednesday and deferred questions to IRCC, after making a similar comment last Friday.

Diab did not stop to answer questions from reporters on Kneecap’s case while heading into the Liberal caucus meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree’s office has also deferred questions to IRCC, and the Prime Minister’s Office has not responded to requests for comment.

In his video announcement on Sept. 19, Gasparro cited a U.K. terrorism-related charge against Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh as a reason for denying entry to Canada. A British judge tossed out the criminal case last Friday, but no one in the government has said if the apparent entry ban remains in place.

Story continues below advertisement

The charge, which was dismissed after a British court said it had been laid too late, came after authorities had alleged Óg Ó hAnnaidh waved a flag of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah during a London concert last year.

Hezbollah is a listed terrorist organization in both the U.K. and Canada.

Kneecap has accused critics of trying to silence the band because of its support for the Palestinian cause throughout the Israeli military’s destruction of Gaza. The band says it doesn’t support Hezbollah and Hamas, nor condone violence.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and Jewish advocacy organization B’nai Brith Canada, which had advocated for the ban, have praised the government for Gasparro’s announcement.

Diddy Wants To Plead His Case At Sentencing + Plans To Address Judge & Reveal Rehab Progress

Diddy is preparing to break his silence in court for the first time since his conviction, hoping his words will sway the judge before sentencing.

The music mogul plans to personally address Judge Arun Subramanian during Friday’s hearing, according to documents filed by his attorney, Teny Geragos.

“The sentencing proceeding holds significant importance for Mr. Combs,” Geragos wrote. “He wishes to appear before the Court, address Your Honor, and allocute in the most dignified and respectful fashion possible.”

Diddy also requested to wear street clothes instead of a jail jumpsuit, aiming to present himself respectfully in front of the court and the victims.

This marks Diddy’s first opportunity to speak publicly about the charges, as he did not testify during trial. He’s expected to discuss his time in rehabilitation programs at Brooklyn MDC, including the STOP Program for v*olence prevention.

One victim, referred to as “Mia,” is also expected to deliver a victim impact statement.

What do you think will happen at sentencing?

On September 30 a court in Italy will, for the third time, begin hearing evidence in the case against American student Amanda Knox and her Italian former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, both accused of the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia in November 2007. In March, Italy's supreme court ordered a re-trial for both - this time in Florence - following the first two trials in Perugia that were marked by controversy. An appeal court in 2011 acquitted both, overturning 2009 convictions by a lower court. In an exclusive interview Knox, now aged 26, explains describes her experiences and explains why she will not be returning to face another protracted series of hearings.

Meredith Kercher was a 21-year-old British college student living in Perugia, Italy, until her life was brutally cut short in 2007. She was murdered and found dead in her Italian home, where she lived with former roommate Amanda Knox. Knox and her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, were wrongfully convicted of killing Kercher, stirring a global media frenzy against the then-20-year-old Knox. Now that Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is out, many are still asking the same question: who killed Kercher?

Below, Hollywood Life has compiled the details from Kercher’s murder case.

Who Was Meredith Kercher?

Kercher was a student at the University of Leeds studying European politics and Italian. She reportedly wanted to work for the European Union or as a journalist in her future.

Before going to Perugia, Kercher appeared in Kristian Leontiou‘s “Some Say” music video in 2004. Students reportedly described Kercher as outgoing and caring.

Were Meredith Kercher & Amanda Knox Friends?

Kercher and Knox were roommates at their Perugia home, and they seemed to have an amicable co-living friendship. The two attended the EuroChocolate festival in October 2007, just weeks before Kercher was murdered, and together, the roommates attended a classical music concert. This is where Knox met her boyfriend, Sollecito, who was 23 years old at the time.

What Was Amanda Knox Accused of?

Knox was accused and convicted of murder, defamation, staging a break-in and sexual violence in the murder of Kercher. Prosecutors alleged that Knox attacked and killed Kerche and that Sollecito and then-20-year-old Rudy Guede sexually assaulted Kercher.

Guede is the only person who was definitively convicted of being involved in Kercher’s murder, while Knox and Sollecito were found not guilty of their convictions in 2011 and formally acquitted of killing Kercher in 2015.

Who Killed Meredith Kercher?

Guede is the only person that has been definitely convicted of killing Kercher. His blood-stained fingerprints were found at the crime scene. Guede, who had lived in Italy since childhood, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for Kercher’s murder in 2008. His prison sentence was reduced on appeal, then Guede was released early in 2021 for good behavior.

Where Is Rudy Guede Now?

Guede was released from prison in 2021. However, in 2023, he was accused of sexual assault and violence by a former girlfriend, whose identity has not been disclosed. They dated while Guede was in prison, and they broke up in 2023, when she pressed charges against him.

As of 2025, Guede is expected to stand trial sometime at the end of the year, according to CNN.

If you or anyone you know has been sexually abused, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). A trained staff member will provide confidential, judgment-free support as well as local resources to assist in healing, recovering and more.

Vets PTSD Doc Makes Case for Psychedelics

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Editor’s Note: “In Waves and War” originally debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in 2024. It opens at the Laemmle Monica in Los Angeles on Friday, October 3, 2025 before a Netflix debut on November 3.

Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen‘s at times emotionally overwhelming documentary gets its title via a quote from “The Odyssey” that opens the film.

“By now, I am used to suffering. I have endured so much in waves and war. Let this next adventure follow.”

The Navy SEALs who are the subjects of “In Waves and War” aren’t just used to suffering. Many long thought that bearing the emotional cost of suffering was their only option. Multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq over years left unseen scars as wall as visible ones, and PTSD can be so intractable an enemy, despite multiple therapies and prescription drugs, that a lot are left to think that just “bearing it” is all they can do.

Tilly Norwood, a creation of AI studio Xicoia

Shenk and Cohen‘s film makes a powerful case that there may be another option: Psychedelic drugs, not approved for use in the U.S., may help break through these vets’ psychological barriers and offer a reset. It makes the case so forcefully that there are moments “In Waves and War” almost feels like a commercial: No downside to these drugs, ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT, is mentioned other than that they may help “crack you open” and face your unresolved traumas and guilt and grief directly — and then it’s up to you lay a new foundation to live a different way after treatment, or you might revert to the way you were before. It’s unclear in the film just how advisable this treatment — which usually involves vets traveling to a clinic in Mexico to receive it — is for everyone. And maybe it isn’t for everyone. But the key is that it offers hope.

The SEALs we meet in “In Waves and War” had each reached a point where they’d given up on hope. Their stories of their years and years fighting overseas, being away from their families for 300+ days a year, and witnessing unspeakable horrors, makes up the spine of the film. These are riveting stories. There’s Marcus Capone, described a couple times as looking like an NFL linebacker, but whose wife says had become “a monster” upon his return from multiple tours of duty. He becomes the leading evangelist for psychedelic treatments for veterans through his foundation VETS (Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions), and is a producer on the film. D.J. Shipley movingly talks about how he met his wife, Patsy, who had been widowed in her early 20s when her first husband, Danny Dietz, was killed in 2005 in the Operation Red Wings crash in Afghanistan. Shipley wanted to visit Dietz’s grave to “ask him permission” to court Patsy. But by the end of almost 20 years in the SEALs, he had nearly wrecked the life he had built with her.

And finally, there’s Matty Roberts, whose journey to Mexico to receive his first treatment is captured in “In Waves and War.” Matty suffered a major wound in his arm during one firefight and was convinced, initially, that his arm had been blown off altogether. With animations from London-based commercial animation company Studio AKA, each of these vets’ traumas come to life. The animation style is fluid and boundary-less, images just made out as they morph into something else: A helicopter hovering over a dusty landscape; a row of SEALs in nightvision goggles approaching a target; fire exchanged over a tractor tire. The images are as hazy as memory, and a very effective way of getting inside the heads of these vets — who otherwise tell their stories direct-to-camera, and are never less than compelling in doing so.

The animation particularly hammers home the individualized experiences of going through the psychedelic treatment: For Marcus, it felt like he was flying through a void with memories from his life floating like a swirl of Polaroids around him; for Matty, he ended up face to face staring down a version of himself, as if learning to confront and let go of his own ego.

It’s all very meaningful to watch and never less than engaging, even if “In Waves and War” comes across like a pharmaceutical infomercial at times as much as a film. Fundamentally, Shenk and Cohen are trying to argue for a particular solution here, and it might be promising indeed, but it’s also presented as a little too much of a silver-bullet for the issues they’ve identified. A truer, more valuable review of “In Waves and War” is one that hopefully will be written in a medical journal rather than IndieWire. At least it offers hope to these American heroes that there can be more to life than “being used to suffering.”

Grade: B-

“In Waves and War” world premiered at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival. It opens at the Laemmle Monica in Los Angeles on Friday, October 3, 2025 before a Netflix debut on November 3.

Neko Case: Neon Grey Midnight Green Album Review

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

To kick off her recent memoir, The Harder I Fight the More I Love You, Neko Case steps into the shoes of her younger self, about to perform a dive bar gig that, as far as her nerves are concerned, might as well be the Super Bowl halftime show. “My job at that moment is to conjure a small dust devil of unreality around us, to pull it up out of a sticky, shiny carpet and flappy, beer-soaked speaker cones,” she writes. “I have to make it out of words and sounds and looks.”

So has been her ethos for the past three decades. At this point it feels wrong to call Case a country artist when her work most closely resembles a feral strain of baroque pop—Nilsson at a truck stop, Kate Bush running with raccoons as well as foxes. Her new album, Neon Grey Midnight Green, arriving right on the heels of her book, is something of a career retrospective, but it is also the 55-year-old Case at her most immediate and daring. Her last foray into autobiographical songwriting plunged into darkness and excavated the muck; Neon Grey sprouts upwards, pushing a newfound wonder for life’s mysteries up through the grass for all to see.

The album’s title, taken from the meeting of slate-colored clouds and conifer forests on the Pacific Northwest skyline, conjures up the familiar sense of vengeance and foreboding found across Case’s other releases. But its overwhelming feelings are gratitude and awestruck revelation. “I’m a meteor shattering around you/And I’m sorry/I’ve become a solar system/Since I found you,” she declares on lead single “Wreck.” Neon Grey was made in collaboration with the 20-piece PlainsSong Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Sara Parkinson and arranged by Tom Hagerman, and recorded live with the full band. The result is at once all-encompassing and strikingly intimate. In the past, Case’s crystalline voice stood alone against the foggy, widescreen neo-noir of songs like “Deep Red Bells” and “Curse of the I-5 Corridor.” Amid all the strings and woodwinds and harps, bolstered by the usual guitars and brush-tapped drums, her heartfelt lyricism manifests as one massive floodlight, daring you to gaze straight-on.

Case has spoken about losing several close friends and colleagues in the years since 2018’s Hell-On, including longtime collaborator Peter Moore and Dexter Romweber of Flat Duo Jets, her favorite band. The latter inspired the beautiful “Winchester Mansion of Sound,” retelling a day spent together walking along train tracks. Case’s emotion for him is raw and effusive, until she snaps back to the present to steer her audience away from cliché: “If you think I’m talkin’ ’bout romance/You’re not listening.” She backtracks over herself in these asides and run-ons and revisions, including in the music itself, which frequently changes tempo partway through a song to match the cadence of Case’s memories. The concept of time, via tidal waves or ticking clocks or a spider building its web, reappears across the album like an urgent spectre. That’s the double-edged sword of grief—debilitating as it may be, it can drive a person toward a more fervent truth-telling, a need to lay out exactly who or what was lost and make certain it is not forgotten. If Hell-On was Case’s plea to heed the warnings of nature and the changing planet, Neon Grey is a grand eulogy for lives she’s already said goodbye to, including versions of her own.

Ayesha Howard Alleges Fraud In Ongoing Case

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Ayesha Howard’s legal team is working overtime amid her ongoing child support case with Anthony Edwards. Recently, a California judge granted Edwards’ motion to toss the summons after he claimed to have no real ties to the state. But in exclusive court documents obtained by The Shade Room, Edwards allegedly downplayed the business and financial ties that link him to California.

Ayesha Howard’s Legal Team Says Anthony Edwards Misled The Court

In new court docs, Anthony Edwards insists his only connection to California comes from the occasional NBA games he plays there with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He told the court he never lived in the state, owns no businesses, entities, or properties. But Ayesha Howard’s legal team says Edwards runs several businesses registered and trademarked in Beverly Hills.

“Anthony Edwards also maintains financial accounts in California and has designated business agents who operates from a Beverly Hills office. These are exactly the types of substantial and continuous contacts with California that Mr. Edwards swore under penalty of perjury that he did not have,” Ayesha Howard’s legal team said in a statement.

Additionally, Howard’s team believes that Edwards attempt to mislead the court was an effort to “manipulate the judicial system” and “avoid accountability in child support.”

Here’s What Previously Went Down Between Howard & Edwards

Before Ayesha accused Anthony of fraud, he asked to seal their child support case. On April 2, In Touch Weekly reported that Edwards filed a motion asking a Georgia judge to keep the proceedings private. He claimed harassment and malicious speculation have interfered with his focus on his career. Edwards said the case involves sensitive child support matters concerning a minor and two high-profile individuals, so he wants the case closed to the public.

Ayesha didn’t hesistate to respond to Anthony’s request. She argued that the case has been public for at least six months, and she hasn’t seen any harm come from that access. She also said she believes Anthony’s motivation for asking to seal the case isn’t valid and insisted it doesn’t justify blocking public access.

More Details On Ayesha & Anthony’s Child Support Case

Ayesha Howard welcomed her second child, Aubri Summers Howard, on October 14, 2024, TSR reported. In December, a paternity test confirmed Anthony Edwards as the baby’s biological father. Then in February, Edwards reportedly told the court he didn’t want custody of the child and believed issues could only be resolved financially.

By April, rumors started to circulate that Edwards allegedly offered to pay 18 years of child for Aubri, but Ayesha quickly shut down the claims. In an exclusive chat with TSR’s Social Media Manager Brianne Deville, she made it clear she hasn’t received any money or agreed to any arrangements.

“There are no court documents, motions, or proceedings that have occurred, nor have I been offered or agreed to such terms,” Ayesha explained.

TSR Social Producer China Lovelace first reported on this exclusive.

Metro Boomin Found “Not Liable” In Sexual Assault Case

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Metro Boomin has officially been cleared.

On Thursday (Sept. 25), a Los Angeles court ruled in favor of the Grammy-nominated producer, born Leland T. Wayne, finding him not liable in a civil sexual assault case brought by Vanessa LeMaistre. According to Rolling Stone, the jury unanimously concluded that LeMaistre had not proven that the “Like That” producer assaulted her in 2016 at a Southern California hotel.

“I’m grateful and thankful to God that I can finally put all of this nonsense behind me. Based off of how I treat others and represent myself, never in a million years would I have thought I could be accused of such a disgusting and heinous act,” Metro said in a statement following the verdict.

“Today I took a victory in court but in reality there is a long list of losses I stacked up in this year-long process of clearing my name and reputation,” he continued. “The very large amount of money and time wasted, coupled with the incalculable amount of money and opportunities that did not make it to me or my team during this time. This has been a very difficult time for me and my family.”

The 32-year-old doubled down on maintaining his innocence, saying “From the beginning I have said these allegations were false and that I would not be a part of a shakedown. She attacked who I am as a person and how I was raised, and I could not let her get away with that. I would never do what she accused me of to anyone. I am deeply thankful to my legal team, my loved ones, the jury, and everyone who stood by me. I’m relieved that the truth came out in court.”

LeMaistre, 39, declined to comment after the verdict, according to her lead attorney Michael J. Willemin, who told PEOPLE, “Though the legal system is often stacked against survivors, our client showed unwavering fortitude throughout this trial. We are disappointed in the outcome, but are proud to represent Ms. LeMaistre and believe that the verdict will ultimately be overturned on appeal.”

The case dates back to October 2024, when LeMaistre filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging that she was sexually assaulted and raped by the “Type Sh*t” producer in 2016. She claimed the encounter led to her getting an abortion. She alleged that during a visit to Metro’s studio in California, she ingested a drink he allegedly gave her after taking half a bar of Xanax, then blacked out and later awoke to him sexually assaulting her.

Weeks later, she claimed she was expecting a baby by him and terminated the pregnancy. Metro’s attorneys, however, maintained that the claims were false and he emphasized that he had always used protection during consensual encounters.

During the trial, Metro testified that he had two consensual sexual encounters with LeMaistre in 2016, always with a condom, and firmly denied the allegations. “For her to accuse me of something like this, it’s something I could never fathom. No way in the world,” he told the jury, adding that the loss of his mother to domestic abuse shaped his belief that sexual abusers “should be tortured and killed.”

LeMaistre testified earlier in the day, recounting her grief over losing her newborn son and alleging the incident left her unable to form healthy relationships and disrupted her dream of one day getting married. Defense attorneys highlighted perceived inconsistencies in her story, including journal entries that suggested she had considered intimacy with Metro after the alleged assault and notes from a 2024 Ayahuasca retreat in Peru outlining her plan to publicly accuse him. Her team denied claims that she had altered medical records to connect Metro to her pregnancy.

A clinical psychologist from UCLA, Dr. April Thames, also testified for the defense, diagnosing LeMaistre with “borderline personality disorder with psychotic features.” Thames admitted that the diagnosis had never been formally made before, with prior records listing major depressive disorder.

Suspect Identified in HBO’s ‘The Yogurt Shop Murders’ Doc Case

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Police named a dead man Friday as a new suspect in the 1991 unsolved killings of four teenage girls at an Austin yogurt shop, saying DNA evidence led to a “significant breakthrough” in the brutal crime that has haunted Texas’ capital and stumped investigators for decades.

In a statement, Austin police said DNA tests led investigators to Robert Eugene Brashers, who died by suicide in 1999 during a standoff with law enforcement. He has since then been linked to several killings and rape in other states.

The announcement came amid renewed attention on the case with the release last month of The Yogurt Shop Murders, an HBO documentary series. Police said the case remains open and scheduled a Monday news conference to detail their findings.

The murders stunned Texas’ capital city and became known as one of the area’s most notorious crimes. Austin police investigators and prosecutors had stumbled over the case for years as they waded through thousands of leads, several false confessions and badly damaged evidence from the burned-out crime scene.

“Our team never gave up working this case,” Austin police said.

Amy Ayers, 13; Eliza Thomas, 17; and sisters Jennifer and Sarah Harbison, ages 17 and 15, were bound, gagged and shot in the head at the “I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt” store where two of them worked. The building was then set on fire.

Investigators have said that around closing time, someone entered the store through the back door, attacked the girls and set the fire. The bodies were found when firefighters were still battling the blaze.

The autopsy report offered glimpses of the lives of teenage sisters and friends: Ayers wore small, white earrings. Sarah Harbison was wearing a gold necklace and a Mickey Mouse watch. Jennifer Harbison wore a high school ring and a Timex watch.

It also suggested the horror: their hands were tied with underwear and mouths were gagged with cloth. Ayers was shot twice.

In 1999, authorities arrested four men on murder charges. Two of them, Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott, were teenagers at the time of the murders. They initially confessed and implicated each other. But both men quickly recanted and said their statements were made under pressure by police.

Still both were tried and convicted. Initially Springsteen was sent to death row, but his sentence was then reduced to life in prison.

Their convictions were overturned and they were set for retrial a decade later.

A judge ordered both men freed in 2009 when prosecutors said new DNA tests that weren’t available in 1991 had revealed another male suspect.

In 2018, Missouri authorities said DNA evidenced linked Brashers to the strangulation of a South Carolina woman in 1990, and the shooting of a mother and daughter in Missouri in 1998. The evidence also connected him to the 1997 rape of a 14-year-old girl in Tennessee.

Brashers died in 1999 when he shot himself during an hours-long standoff with police at a motel in Kennett, Missouri.
