Malayalam cinema veteran Mohanlal was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema, at the 71st National Film Awards on Tuesday evening at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Mohanlal is 65 years old when he received the award, which makes him the youngest to get it and the second Keralite to be given the distinction, after director Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who received it in 2004.

An emotional Mohanlal, while accepting the award, said,

As the voice of the Malayalam film industry, I am greatly obliged to be the youngest to be honored and just the second from the state ever to have received this national award. This achievement is not my own, it is of the entire Malayalam film fraternity.

A special tribute movie was shown during the ceremony, detailing his long and successful career spanning over four decades and over 350 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada cinema. Mohanlal spoke of the honour, saying,

I see this award as a group tribute to our industry, its legacy, creativity, and resilience. I believe this is destiny’s hand in enabling me to receive this award on behalf of all the people who have contributed to Malayalam cinema.

Hannah Beachler to Receive Variety’s Creative Impact Award at SCAD

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler will be honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Production Design Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

Beachler made history when she became the first African American to take home a trophy in the production design category for her work on “Black Panther.” She has been Ryan Coogler’s go-to, with the two working on “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” together.

“SCAD is delighted to partner again with Variety to present the Creative Impact Award to the extraordinary production designer, Hannah Beachler,” said Christina Routhier, senior executive director of the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. “Her work on ‘Sinners’—from the haunting juke joint to the textures of the Mississippi Delta—roots the film in authenticity while elevating the story into something otherworldly. The choices she made demonstrate the power of production design to shape narrative and deepen the cinematic experience. For our SCAD students in production design, film, and television, her artistry is an inspiring example of bold, innovative world-building, and we are thrilled to celebrate her contributions to moviemaking.”

“Hannah’s work is extraordinary. On behalf of Variety, I am thrilled to partner with the team at SCAD Savannah Film Festival and to recognize her work,” said Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay. ”The Creative Impact Award celebrates someone who has made an impact in their field, and Hannah’s work has done just that. From building Wakanda to the Mississippi Delta in ‘Sinners,’ hearing her talk about her process and research is going to be such a gift for the students at SCAD. Hannah’s insight into her process will be a masterclass, and will be an exciting morning.” Tangcay continued, “This is the first time we have awarded the Creative Impact in Production Design, and what better place to do it than in Savannah, and to present it to Hannah and celebrate her incredible career.”

Beachler will receive this award during the SCAD Savannah Film Festival which will run from Oct. 25 through Nov. 1.

Presented by the Savannah College of Art and Design, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival is filled with cinematic creativity from award-winning professionals and emerging student filmmakers. Each year, more than 63,000 people attend the eight-day festival. A distinguished stop on the road to the Academy Awards, the annual festival kicks off with a gala opening night screening, while the rest of the week features scheduled competition films, premiere screenings, workshops, lectures and panels. These events take place at SCAD’s historic theaters and industry-leading studio spaces throughout the historic city of Savannah, Ga.

As previously announced, Jon M. Chu will receive the Vanguard Director Award and Jennifer Lopez will receive the Virtuoso Award.

Variety’s chief awards editor Clayton Davis will also be returning to host the “Pixels and Pencils” panel.

Another first time nominee and winner was S. Epatha Merkerson, who was honored in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie category for her performance in Lackawanna Blues. In a lighthearted moment, she noted she’d lost a copy of her acceptance speech down her dress.

“Oh my god, I actually wrote something, and I put it in my thing, and it went down and I can’t get it,” Merkerson told the crowd. “It’s probably stuck to me.”

Rounding out the winners in the miniseries categories were The Lost Prince, which was named Outstanding Miniseries overall, and Paul Newman, who despite winning in the Supporting Actor category for his work in Empire Falls did not attend the 2005 Emmys.

Anuparna won best director award in Venice, but never showed interest in films earlier: Father

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Kolkata, Filmmaker Anuparna Roy, who received the best director award at the Venice International Film Festival for her ‘Song of Forgotten Trees’, had never shown much love and passion for movies during her school days, but was determined to carve her own niche, her father said on Tuesday.

Anuparna won best director award in Venice, but never showed interest in films earlier: Father

Beaming with pride for his daughter’s amazing feat at the festival, Brahmananda Roy is eager to welcome the young IT professional-turned-movie director to their home in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district.

“We had not noticed much love and passion for films during her school days, but she was studious. Her ambition for films came to the fore later when she started her career in the IT sector. She had a resolve to create her own identity,” the 63-year-old retired coal sector official told PTI over the phone from his home in Kulti.

Her father said the family members were initially upset over her decision to take the plunge into film direction and even prophesied that she was making a mistake.

“When we first came to know about her decision in post 2020, we thought it was a gamble. She had no previous experience in the tinsel world or filmmaking. But her dedication, zeal and perseverance gradually made us confident about her ability,” the proud father said.

He said Anuparna had initially settled in Delhi after graduating with English honours from Bengal and pursued a career in the IT sector.

According to him, she shifted base to Mumbai during the COVID period in 2021 and decided to try her hand at filmmaking.

Anuparna decided to take the risk as she had “self-belief”, her father said.

Mother Manisha Roy recalled how Anuparna gave “100 per cent to anything she wanted to achieve”.

“I had initially thought she would get a government job. When she joined the IT sector, we were happy. But I often chided her as she kept changing her jobs. She often told us that she would make me and her mother proud,” Brahmananda said.

Elaborating on her joy and excitement, her father said, “We were asleep around 12.30 am when Anuparna called up to break the news. She was elated. Initially, I could not believe it. I asked her whether she stood first among all contenders. ‘Yes Baba’ was her reply. Her mother was crying in joy.”

Anuparna has some work in London and will return to Mumbai at the earliest, he said.

Anuparna’s parents are looking forward to her visit to their present Kulti home and ancestral house in Purulia, he said, adding that the filmmaker will definitely come to the state before the Durga Puja.

She will meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her visit to Bengal, he said.

Recalling her initial days of struggle as an independent filmmaker, Brahmananda said, “She had to invest a sizeable amount of her salary to make films. I also chipped in. She had faced difficulties in organising everything during the pre-shoot days. Outdoor shootings were a challenge for her on many occasions. She, however, got help from the local administration and authorities to wrap up the shoots.”

With individual efforts, her perseverance and support of her friends in Mumbai and here, the film ‘Song of Forgotten Trees’ saw the light of day, he said.

The parents do not have any worry about their daughter realising her goals in life.

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose and the chief minister had on Monday congratulated the young filmmaker for winning the best director award in the Orizzonti section of the 82nd Venice Film Festival.

The film tells the relationship between two women – a migrant actress and a corporate worker – in Mumbai.

The filmmaker made history by becoming the first Indian to win the best director award in the festival’s Orizzonti section for her movie ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’, which explores complex narratives and powerful themes.

About Anuparna’s penchant for home-cooked meals, Brahmananda said, “She is not fond of delicacies from restaurants and hotels. She is mostly a vegetarian but relishes ‘ghar ka khana’. She had told me that she misses rice, sabji, dhokar dalna, fish and mutton for a long time.”

Her mother said she could not wait to see her daughter savouring her favourite dishes after so many days.

Mariah Carey Video Vanguard Award Speech

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Mariah Carey‘s latest achievement was far from a fantasy.

After all, the “Obsessed” singer accepted the highest achievement at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 7: the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

With over three decades in the music industry, 16 solo studio albums and six Grammy wins, Mariah was honored with the lifetime achievement award by Ariana Grande. With the singer winning her first-ever VMA this year for her track “Type Dangerous,” she had a special message for the award show.

“I just had one question,” Mariah—who earned her first of nine nominations in 1996—began. “What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?”

It was all in jest, however, with her quickly adding, “I’m kidding. I love you!”

As Mariah accepted the award, she reflected on her attendance at the award show, including her presenting host LL Cool J with his Vanguard Award in 1997 and opening the 1998 ceremony with a “faux standoff” with Whitney Houston.
