Liv Ullmann to Receive Career Award From European Film Academy

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Liv Ullmann will be honored during the upcoming European Film Awards with a career award celebrating her body of work as an actress, director and screenwriter.

Ullmann has been an international star since Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 arthouse hit “Persona.” Indeed, she is best-known for her collaborations with Bergman, acting in 10 of his films and directing two of his screenplays. Bergman was also the father of her daughter, author Lin Ullmann.

Ullmann is also known for her work with Swedish director Jan Troell in “The New Land” (1972) and “The Emigrants,” for which she was nominated for an Oscar, and with Italy’s Mauro Bolognini in “Farewell Moscow,” for which she won a David di Donatello award.

Ullmann’s first film as a director was ” Sofie” (1992), about the life of a Jewish woman in Copenhagen from 1886 to 1907, starring Karen-Lise Mynster, Erland Josephson and Ghita Nørby. That drama was followed by an adaptation of Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset’s great historical epic “Kristin Lavransdatter” (1995) set in 14th-century Norway, and “Private Confessions” (1996), written by Bergman and starring Pernilla August and Max von Sydow. Her film “Faithless” (2000), starring Lena Endre and Erland Josephson, premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival and her most recent directorial effort is “Miss Julie” with Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain.

“Liv Ullmann has helped to shape our understanding of European film,” the European Film Academy said in a statement.

The 38th edition of the European Film Awards will take place on Jan. 17, 2026, in Athens.

Sony Pictures Television Award Introduced At MIA Market In Rome

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Television (SPT) will introduce a drama award at this week’s MIA Market in Rome.

The Sony Pictures Television Award will be presented for the first time at the Italian industry confab. This will go to the winner of the annual MIA Drama Coproduction Market & Pitching Forum, with a jury from Sony Pictures Television making the choice from the 15 in contention.

Projects in contention include 1980s Parisian skinheads drama Rage, which will be directed by Xavier Dolan, and Dutch art theft drama Hitler’s Horses: An Arthur Brand Story, produced by Femke Wolting from Submarine and written by Ed McCardie. There are also projects from Palestine, the UK, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway and, of course, Italy.

SPT has been a big supporter of MIA over the years, with the President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, Katherine Pope, speaking on stage last year. She’ll be in town again this week to present the award, as SPT becomes the official sponsor of the Drama Coproduction Market for the first time.

The launch of the Sony Pictures Television Award “underscores a shared commitment to fostering innovative new voices, promoting international coproductions, and telling stories with the potential to transcend borders,” SPT and MIA jointly said.

“We’re thrilled to partner with MIA and Gaia Tridente’s incredible team and establish the Sony Pictures Television Award for Best Drama Project 2025,” said Pope. “The Drama Coproduction Market at MIA brings together creators from around the world who are pushing boundaries and thinking globally. We’re excited to support these kinds of bold projects that can travel across cultures while maintaining their unique voice. It is important to champion these stories and the talented teams behind them.”

MIA boss Tridente has repeatedly positioned her market as one where stand-out projects truly begin their journeys to screen.

“This recognition, through the new Sony Pictures Television Award, seals an important partnership with a global major and highlights the value of the MIA Co-Production Market,” she said today. “I am especially grateful to Kathrine Pope and Sony Pictures Television for their trust and vision, which confirms the strategic role of MIA as a platform for international co-production.

“This award celebrates the drama projects and talents that emerge from our market, reinforcing our mission to connect creativity and business on a global scale. Together, we aim to foster stories with worldwide resonance and provide producers with concrete opportunities to grow and succeed.”

MIA begins today (October 6) and runs through the week, gently warming up participants for next week’s MIPCOM. Now in its eleventh year, and fourth with Tridente at the helm, the event is heavily focused on its pitching competitions for drama, documentaries and animation.

This year, there will also be a Book Adaptation Forum and training initiative Apollo Series, which has been developed in partnership with Series Mania Institute and Goteborg Film TV’s Drama Vision track. There will also be a short-film showcase, ‘Vertical’ AI workshops curated by Largo.ai, and an Industry Insider Bootcamp, which is presented by UTA.

As usual, there will also be panel sessions, content showcases, the MIA Buyers’ Club, the C EU Soon work-in-progress program, market screenings, networking sessions, workshops, roundtables and conferences. The 2024 edition attracted 2,800 participants, up 10% year-on-year.

Squid Game’s global icon Lee Jung-jae has become the first Korean to be honored with the coveted Chaplin Award Asia. The Charlie Chaplin Foundation bestowed the honor on Lee in recognition of his influential role in Asian cinema and his incredible 30-year acting career.

Lee became an international sensation with his Emmy-winning performance as Seong Gi-hun in Netflix’s Squid Game, a desperate, down-on-his-luck fellow roped into a lethal game of survival. The show was an international phenomenon, shattering streaming records and winning multiple awards, including several Emmys. Lee became the first Asian actor to be awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Organizers at the award ceremony cited Lee’s “persistent and positive impact on Asian cinema” during the award ceremony. In his acceptance speech, Lee said he was grateful and noted the legacy of Charlie Chaplin: “It’s nerve-wracking and humbling to accept an award in the name of Charlie Chaplin, a great filmmaker, artist, and creative icon. I hope to use this honor to have a positive influence as an Asian filmmaker.

Since its launch in 2018, Chaplin Award Asia has recognized other film legends including Tony Leung, Zhang Yimou, and Brigitte Lin.

Aside from Squid Game, Lee’s filmography boasts memorable performances in award-winning movies like Il Mare (2000), The Housemaid (2010), New World (2013), and Deliver Us from Evil (2020). Hailing as a model, he began acting in the 1990s and is now one of Korea’s most credible actors.

He recently entered Hollywood with a lead role in Star Wars: The Acolyte and is also all set to return to Korean TV in the upcoming tvN drama Nice to Not Meet You.

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

When Jawan hit the big screens, it wasn’t just another film, but it evolved into a true cultural phenomenon. Directed by Atlee, the film, starring Shah Rukh Khan, shattered box-office records, eventually becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film ever made, and recently earned Shah Rukh his first National Award for Best Actor. Audiences were deeply moved by the film’s scale, emotional depth, and the precision of his performance, which further demonstrated how Atlee’s vision could elevate a film to a cultural milestone. Amidst the excitement, an intriguing behind-the-scenes detail has recently surfaced.

During the promotions for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Sanya Malhotra shared that during the filming of Jawan, Atlee confidently predicted that Shah Rukh Khan would be recognized with a National Award for his performance. She said, “Oh, he is fantastic! And when we were shooting for Jawan, Atlee sir had already predicted that Shah Rukh Khan was going to win a National Award. He used to say it with so much confidence and look at him now. He won the National Award. He’s amazing.”

The same prediction has now become historical. After a career of over three decades, Shah Rukh Khan has finally been awarded the prestigious National Award, a huge achievement not only for him but also for Atlee, whose direction and storytelling provided the ideal foundation for one of Shah Rukh’s most acclaimed performances.

Atlee’s insightful vision highlights his prowess as a filmmaker. Known for making grand cinematic experiences that balance scale with emotional depth, he not only delivered a record-breaking blockbuster but also directed a performance worthy of the nation’s highest honour.

Rani Mukerji Recalls Father’s Heartbreak Over National Award Snub For Black

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Rani Mukerji recently opened up about a deeply personal moment in her career—the time she didn’t win the National Award for her performance in Black(2005), despite high expectations. Speaking at an event in Delhi, the actress shared how her father, veteran filmmaker Ram Mukerji, reacted to the outcome, and how it shaped her perspective on fame and recognition.

The critically acclaimed film Black, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, featured Rani in a demanding role as Michelle, a deaf, mute, and blind woman. At just 25 years old, Rani delivered a performance that was widely praised, and many believed she was the frontrunner for the National Award for Best Actress that year.

“There was chatter that I would win,” Rani recalled. “I gave my all in Black. I was just 25 at the time, and I poured everything into that role. But when I didn’t win, that’s when my blinkers came on. I realised that even when you do your best work, things might not always go your way.”

Rani shared that the disappointment wasn’t hers alone. “I have to be honest and tell you that my father was very disappointed. My baba was heartbroken that I didn’t win. So was Sanjay, the director of the film,” she said.

Despite the letdown, Rani emphasized the importance of perspective and timing. “When things are meant to happen, they happen. The way India and my fans cheered for me—it couldn’t have been better than that.”

Black was co-written, directed, and co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Ayesha Kapur, Shernaz Patel, and Dhritiman Chatterjee. It was inspired by the life and writings of Helen Keller, focusing on the intense journey of a differently-abled woman and her teacher, who eventually develops Alzheimer’s disease. The film went on to win several National Awards, including Best Actor for Amitabh Bachchan, Best Feature Film in Hindi, and Best Costume Design. However, Rani’s exclusion from the winners’ list was widely discussed at the time.

Fast forward to 2023, Rani finally received her first National Award for Best Actress for her powerful performance in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Directed by Ashima Chibber, the film is inspired by the real-life story of Sagarika Chakraborty, an Indian mother who fought against Norwegian child welfare services to reunite with her children in 2011.

Reflecting on her long journey, Rani said that awards are not always the final measure of an artist’s worth. “It’s about the connection you make with your audience and the impact your work leaves behind,” she noted.

Looking ahead, Rani is set to return to the big screen in a bold, action-packed role with Mardaani 3. Directed by Abhiraj Minawala, the third instalment of the popular Mardaani franchise is scheduled to release on February 27, 2026. The film promises to showcase Rani once again as the fierce and determined cop Shivani Shivaji Roy, a character that has already earned her widespread acclaim.

Rani’s journey, marked by highs and lows, stands as a testament to her resilience and unwavering dedication to her craft. Her story not only reflects the unpredictable nature of awards and recognition but also highlights the emotional investments made by artists and their families behind the scenes.
