Shraddha Kapoor To Return To MHCU With Stree 3; Announces Animated Film Chhotti Stree, It’s Release Date And More

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

As the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe expands, Dinesh Vijan and Shraddha Kapoor make a special announcement at the Thamma trailer launch today, and that is MHCU will release Chhotti Stree soon. The duo surprised everyone with what’s coming next. Scroll down to read below.

Dinesh Vijan On What’s Next Maddock’s Horror Comedy Universe

Dinesh Vijan announces the future of Maddock’s horror comedy universe. He said, “I will make an interesting announcement now how that will unfold. But the idea was that I feel we have such a rich folklore. Even if you look at Dhamma, you know, we look at the West for these kinds of films. But this film is about Betals. Betals are enriched in our own culture. But we look at the West and say it’s such an original thought. But because we are such an old civilisation, a lot of original ideas are actually taken from our history.”

He added, “But we were very aspirational to the west but you know thanks to the way India has progressed and the way we’ve become so proud of who we are and I think that change in the last 10 years made us want to build our own universe and some really wise people told me very early on that you know whatever you do create a box that they all can exist so this universe is that box where we cage a few monsters.”

Dinesh On New Characters On MHCU

When asked what other characters will be seen in the universe, Dinesh said, “So there are going to be two more characters that will be introduced. Thama the film will carry the next announcement of what’s releasing the following year and you know sometime six months after that like how Munjya and three came back to back they’ll be the last film they’re called Shakti Shalini and Chamunda and then we will go into the second part and then Shraddha will give you some interesting before three three comes what’s going to come what’s going to come Shraddha?”

Shraddha Kapoor Announces Chhotti Stree

The actress responded, “To be honest, this is my favourite part of Maddok Horror Comedy Universe. When Dino told me this, I thought your name should be Dinesh Vision only. Guys, Maddok Horror Comedy Universe is coming out with Chhotti Stree as an animated film. Which will be released in theatres for everyone, for the kids, for the families, I think it’s going to be a blast. And I think there are a lot of exciting times for India.”

She added, “And it just feels amazing to be a part of this universe. I think all the kids and adults watch Stree together. And the interesting thing about Chhotti Stree, the way Amar and Niren have conceptualised it, is that it will end with a scene from Stree 3. So it will go from animation to a live film at the end and will actually answer the question ke backstory kya thi. You won’t have to wait that much. So it will come six months before three.”

About Maddock Horror Comedy Universe

The Maddock Horror-Comedy Universe already includes blockbusters like Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya, and with Thamma, the universe grows bigger, bloodier, and bolder. With the new visual identity now revealed, fans can expect many more exciting chapters to come. So this October 21, watch Thamma in cinemas- Maddock Films’ most ambitious Horror-Comedy crossover yet.

“We have a chance to save our family – if we can find the Sandman.” Netflix has revealed the official trailer for In Your Dreams, an animated adventure from filmmakers Erik Benson and Alex Woo. This fun new creation reminds me of the other Netflix movie Slumberland with Jason Momoa, or even Pixar’s Dream Productions series as well, with a similar premise about kids who get into their dreams. In Your Dreams is a comedy adventure about Stevie and her brother Elliot who journey into the absurd landscape of their own dreams. If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, the Sandman will grant them their ultimate dream come true…the perfect family. “What if your dreams could become reality?” This was just unveiled with a preview at the Annecy Film Festival in France. The voice cast features Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Elias Janssen, Craig Robinson, Simu Liu, Cristin Milioti, Omid Djalili, Gia Carides, SungWon Cho, and Zachary Noah Piser. With music from John Debney, animation from Kuku Studios & Sony’s Imageworks. This looks like it should be very wild, zany fun.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Alex Woo’s film In Your Dreams, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

In this enchanting tale, Stevie (voiced by Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and her brother, Elliot (voiced by Elias Janssen), venture through an absurd world of their own imagination to make their family perfect again. If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, their dream just might come true. When 12-year-old Stevie and her 8-year-old brother, Elliot, discover a magical picture book that says the Sandman can make any dream a reality, the duo embark on a life-affirming journey into the dream realm to find the mythical character. Longing to make their family perfect, the duo urgently wish for it to come true. In You Dreams is directed by animation filmmaker Alex Woo (aka Alexander Woo), director of Go! Go! Cory Carson: Chrissy Takes the Wheel previously and many other “Go! Go!” shorts & films. Co-directed by Erik Benson. The screenplay is also by Alex Woo and Erik Benson. Produced by Timothy Hahn & Gregg Taylor. Made by Kuku Studios and Sony Pictures Imageworks. Netflix releases In Your Dreams streaming on Netflix worldwide starting November 14th, 2025 this fall.

PVR's Aamer Bijli says animated films are working at box office as they are no longer considered 'kids' cartoons'

PVR’s Aamer Bijli says animated films are working at box office as they are no longer considered ‘kids’ cartoons’

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

It has been a great year for animation in India. Animated features have broken the glass ceiling when it comes to box office collections in the country. International studios and franchises are tailoring their films to the country in some cases. This boom has largely been the result of a shift in how audiences perceive animated storytelling, believes PVR’s Aamer Bijli.

PVR’s Aamer Bijli talks about the state of animation in India ahead of the release of Shin Chan: Spicy Kasukabe Dancers.

In conversation with Hindustan Times, Aamer touches upon the success of some animated films at the box office, and also how the upcoming Shin Chan film can take it forward.

Why animation is suddenly working in India

Aamer Bijli, Lead Specialist – Innovation, Film Marketing, and Digital Programming at PVR INOX, has been an anime fan for years now. Hence, he is quick to praise the box office success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. The anime has minted ₹65 crore in India. The previous record for an anime in the country was ₹9 crore.

Bijli says, “I think animation has been synonymous in India, especially with cartoons, for a very long time, which has really aided in limiting its acceptance, unfortunately. I was a massive fan of Pokémon, Beyblade, and Dragon Ball growing up. What I have realised is that the initial nostalgia really helps now. There are a lot of parents who are doubling down on that nostalgia by making their children watch all of these things for the first time. I think it’s only creating a newer and larger audience.”

But it’s not just anime that has succeeded in India recently. Mythological epic Mahavatar Narsimha exceeded all expectations by grossing over ₹300 crore worldwide, 10 times as much as any Indian animated film had made prior to that. Talking about its success, Bijli adds, “Mahavatar Narima relied on our roots. It embedded mythology with philosophical insights, and it also resonated with the collective identity of a story that we’re already familiar with. All of this drew the audiences to the cinemas.”

The Shin Chan movie’s India setting

In this climate, the Japanese animated film, Shin Chan: Spicy Kasukabe Dancers, is releasing in India. Shin Chan already enjoys a sizable fan base in India. And on top of that, this film sees the beloved character travel to India. Is the Indian setting a nod to the country’s growing popularity as a market for animation? “I’ve been asked that question a lot,” says Bijli, adding, “I feel that would be an honour if they thought to set something in India consciously. It sure seems like it from the trailer that it is a show specifically done for India. I think it also makes sense considering Shin Chan is one of India’s most-watched international animated IPs, and has an extreme nostalgia-driven loyalty amongst millennials and young adults. So I wouldn’t be surprised.”

You know the different markets I think different horses for different courses right there are a lot of films that do extremely well in the US that don’t translate as well in India and and you know we face it all the time in our distribution business where we bet on films certain you know that that we believe will perform really really well uh in the Indian market due to the trickle down effect from Hollywood but unfortunately that’s not always the case. So I just think that the consumer base is so different sometimes uh that um it doesn’t always translate directly.

Shin Chan: Spicy Kasukabe Dancers is being presented in India by PVR INOX Pictures in association with Japan’s TV Asahi. The film releases in India this Friday, September 26.

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain Review: A Small Animated Wonder

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain Review: A Small Animated Wonder

by jummy84 September 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Possibly the first bonafide coming-of-age movie about a two-year-old girl who learns her place in the world and how it works, Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han’s “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain” might operate on a similar emotional wavelength as recent genre classics like “Boyhood” or “Lady Bird,” but this animated bildungsroman — impressionistically adapted from an autobiographical novel by the Belgian novelist Amélie Nothomb — feels as though it belongs to a different universe altogether.

For one thing, its chubby-cheeked namesake believes that she’s God. Or, begrudgingly, at least a god. Buddhist tradition holds that children are “of the gods” until the age of seven or so, when they make their transition into the mortal world, but something must have gotten lost in translation for the French-speaking Amélie, who was born to Belgian parents in the mountains of Japan toward the end of the 1960s. The youngest of three children, Amélie is so slow to develop that a doctor tells her parents that she’s a vegetable, and instructs them to place her in a protective bubble. “God did nothing, and was forgotten,” says her constant and precocious inner monologue (voiced by the older Loïse Charpentier).

'Wayward,' a Netflix series, stars Toni Collette as Evelyn Wade, shown here watching over group therapy

And then, one fateful day, her visiting grandmother (Cathy Cerde as Claude) feeds Amélie a piece of Belgian white chocolate and the little girl erupts in a blaze of light like something out of “Dragonball Z.” From that point on, the former “vegetable” is a walking, talking vessel of wonder. And the movie around her — which is just as short, strange, and suspended between reality and imagination as its pint-sized heroine — is likewise open to the mysteries of the universe, as “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain” blossoms into a uniquely childlike meditation on all of the beauty that life has to offer, and on all of the loss which makes that beauty worth cherishing while you can.

As anyone who’s ever had a two-year-old could tell you, kids that age don’t quite see things in such abstract terms. And yet, Vallade and Liane-Cho Han’s borderline anthropomorphic film is so arresting for how beautifully it approximates a child’s experience of entering the world, and of realizing that it extends beyond the limits of their gaze. That it existed before they were born, and doesn’t revolve around any single one of us.

That awakening is both subject and story for “Little Amélie,” and yet it would be hard to imagine a less didactic approach to the lessons involved. Plotted like a series of ever-expanding bubbles, the movie is primarily driven by splendor more than anything else, and by the sheer joy of discovering what life has to offer for the first time. Amélie’s world is a feast for the senses, and the rotoscope-like style of the film’s digital animation — not performance-captured, but illustrated to make it look as though a soft and hyper-vivid filter has been placed over reality as we know it — transforms even the most ordinary kitchens or flower gardens into the stuff of core memories.

The girl’s massive green eyes constantly re-center the movie around the act of looking, and that focus — when combined with the overall aesthetic — has the added effect of making everything she encounters seem equally real. When Amélie imagines her mean older brother as a mindless carp sucking away at the surface of a pond, we understand that’s how she thinks of him in her mind’s eye. When she becomes convinced that her mother’s vacuum cleaner must also be a god (how else could it make things permanently disappear like that?), there’s no sense in doubting her conviction.

In the film’s most effective sequence, Amélie’s loving young housekeeper — a Japanese woman who’s either fluent in French for some reason or our first hint of the movie’s interchangeable approach to language — uses a rice cooker to explain the horror of the bombs that rained down on the country during the war, and to do so in a way that a (super-advanced) two-year-old might be able to understand. There isn’t so much as a hint of violence, and yet the image of grains being separated from each other amid the void of a closed pot offers a potent evocation of what it must be like to hear about and process such things for the first time.

Voiced by Victoria Grobois, Nishio-san will become Amélie’s best friend and most beloved teacher. The child’s world literally grows more fleshed out as a result of their time together, and while “Little Amélie” is rarely suspenseful or meaningfully story-driven, its visual progression from vague color splotches to Monet-like detail offers a compelling kind of plot development unto itself.

The film gets sadder as it goes along and forces Amélie to contend with a handful of uncomfortable realities (including the reasons why their Japanese landlord is so standoffish towards her foreign tenants, and the fact that Amélie’s family won’t be staying in the country forever), but it becomes more beautiful at exactly the same rate. Lasting only 71 minutes, or just a little bit longer than a sunshower, sunshower, “Little Amélie and the Character of Rain” isn’t a moment too short for its material, and yet its brevity allows it to maintain that delicate balance between joy and grief — discovery and heartache — from start to finish, and to use the sweet cocoon of childhood as a way of crystallizing how that dynamic grows with us as we get older. “Life is a great chomping mouth that spares nothing,” Amélie surmises at her lowest moment, but there’s oh so much to see between each bite.

Grade: B

“Little Amélie or the Character of Rain” screened at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. GKIDS will release it in select theaters on Friday, October 31, and nationwide on Friday, November 7.
