Mexico’s First Stop-Motion Animated Feature

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

It doesn’t take long for “I Am Frankelda,” a film being sold as Mexico’s first stop-motion feature, to show that it has a lot more going for it than a simple claim to fame. Our first clue is the introduction to the “Land of Spooks,” a fantasy realm parallel to the real world which influences human nightmares. It’s an absolute explosion of mixed media: Cardboard cutouts with 2D illustrations depict a castle spire as a bolt of lightning strikes, while a combination of painted and live-action insert shots punctuate the movements of the puppets. It’s an immediate glimpse into the boundless creativity of this first feature from Roy and Arturo Ambriz, brothers and co-founders of the production studio Cinema Fantasma.

Elle Fanning in Predator: Badlands

Notably, the studio has some creative and financial backing from one Guillermo Del Toro, who recently released his own quasi-musical stop-motion fantasy, and whose love of the macabre can be felt in the Ambriz brothers’ own creative direction (not to mention the overlap between Del Toro’s new “Frankenstein” and the Mary Shelley-esque author at the heart of “Frankelda”). There’s a little bit of Henry Selick in here too (perhaps “The Nightmare Before Christmas” most of all), but the aforementioned interest in mixed media instantly begins to set the studio’s work apart, even as their movie flaunts its foundational influences.

The story of the film is actually a prequel, set prior to the events of the Cartoon Network Latin America series “Frankelda’s Book of Spooks,” which depicts mythical creatures from horror folk tales invading Earth from a realm where nightmares live; those tales are told by the titular Frankelda, a writer who also happens to be a ghost. Fortunately, ”I Am Frankelda” doesn’t really ask for any prior knowledge of the show, since it bypasses the episodes and dives directly into Frankelda’s past in the Land of Spooks.

It’s a realm in turmoil: the king and queen are shown to be dying due to a lack of good horror stories, and therefore a scarcity in the human nightmares on which they rely upon for sustenance. Originally known as Francisca Imelda, Frankelda becomes involved following the death of her mother, burying herself in writing original horror stories which unwittingly influence the other world in a mind-bending relationship between author and text – she creates Prince Herneval, a sort of humanoid owl monster, and seemingly influences his actions (à la “Stranger Than Fiction”), but the Prince influences her in return, a dynamic that becomes the foundation for a colorful story that sees art as a two-way street.

“Franked” suffers from some laborious exposition in the run-up to its best parts, as the Ambriz brothers take pains to establish the political intrigue of their film’s supernatural world, as well as the many concepts that undergird them. Concepts like the “Harpspider,” a gnarled tree-like musical instrument which conjures nightmares into the human world, the “Royal Nightmarer” who’s responsible for writing those nightmares, and then a variety of different factions who vie for control over these things — often working in opposition to the king and queen thanks to the schemes of the current Royal Nightmarer, an evil giant spider named Procustes. Good, then, that “Frankelda” enlivens the delivery of this information in myriad ways, such as gliding camerawork, astonishing production design, and even a musical sequence.

The Land of Spooks is a phantasmagorical blend of twisting gothic spires, impossible land formations, and disconcerting expressionist proportions. The creatures that dwell within it are even more impressive in their mechanical complexity and visual detail. The obsessive hand-crafted work in absolutely every aspect of the film speaks to its own message about the ecstasy of creating art and the messy relationship between author, audience, and text. The magic of “I Am Frankelda”  lies in how its form speaks to its function, as the notion of art taking on a life of its own becomes more convincing when conveyed through puppetry this spectacular and lively.

There’s no overemphasizing how much color is packed into each frame, nor the production team’s palpable commitment to such tactile effects work. Smoke, an ocean of spooky fog (with hands!), clouds constructed from cotton wool; you can see the fur on Procustes boiling between shots, while one particularly ingenious effect sees the king partially fading into a kind of shimmering mist.

There’s only so much marveling at brilliant and grotesque creature designs that can be done before the story needs to get on its feet, but “I Am Frankelda” does eventually click into place once its world is the fully established, From there, the film settles into its ultimate groove as it digs into Frankelda’s anxieties about being a creator, and then Herneval’s guilt over his continual mistakes in his desperation to save his family, which is beautifully expressed through song. This is all to say that “I Am Frankelda” is bursting at the seams with ideas about the unruly and often distressing process of making truthful art, which are themselves expressed over the course of a film which is admirably purist in its craft at a time when animation is threatened by the phony digital grotesquery of AI. Through their tactile work, The Ambriz Brothers and their familial cohort of artists deal in a grotesquery of a far more appealing sort.

Grade: B+

“I Am Frankelda” screened at the 2025 Tokyo International Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

“You were the only one who could see the real me.” GKids has unveiled another new official US trailer for Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, also known as just Little Amélie, a beautiful animated film from France. This is the English dub version of the trailer (original here). From directors Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, Amélie et la métaphysique des tubes (the original title) is the story of Amélie, a Belgian girl living in Japan, who adores nature and all the spectacular granduer of the outdoors. The story explores her young life with her companion Nishio-san, a caretaker for the family. Her third birthday becomes a turning point, marking the beginning of life-altering events that will shape her understanding of the world she exists in. The original French language voices are by Emmylou Homs, Loïse Charpentier, Laetitia Coryn, Yumi Fujimori, and Isaac Schoumsky. I’m a huge fan of this film (and quoted in this trailer). I first saw it at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and it really left me in awe – it really is stunningly beautiful. About a little girl growing up and appreciating the natural world and learning about all the beauty, even if humans can be rotten or mean. The funniest part is when she tries Belgian white chocolate and everything changes.

Another US trailer for animated movie Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, direct from YouTube:

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain Trailer

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain Poster

You can rewatch the original language trailer for Little Amélie right here or the intial festival trailer here.

Follows the young Amélie – born in Japan to Belgian parents – as she navigates an extraordinary early childhood. For the first two-and-a-half years of her life, she exists in a state of pure sensation, detached from typical human experiences – metaphorically described as “a digestive tube, inert and vegetative”. But on her third birthday, a transformative event awakens her to the world. Over the next six months, she discovers language, family, a heavenly garden, Japan, water, the changing seasons and the passage of time. Drawing on the Japanese belief that children are considered divine until the age of three, the film explores how this brief period, filled with joy & sorrow, is a foundational element in shaping her identity.

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, originally known as Amélie et la métaphysique des tubes in French, is co-directed by filmmakers Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang (animator on The Illusionist, Long Way North, Ethel & Ernest, Calamity a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary) & Mailys Vallade (of The Lighthouse Keeper short, artist on Calamity a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary), making their feature directorial debut with this project. The screenplay is written by Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang, Eddine Noël, Aude Py, and Mailys Vallade. Adapted from the book written by Amélie Nothomb. Produced by Claire La Combe, Edwina Liard, Henri Magalon, and Nidia Santiago. This first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year (read our review) and it’s next playing TIFF this month before release. GKids will debut Little Amélie or the Character of Rain in US theaters nationwide starting November 7th, 2025 late this fall. Beautiful?

To battle they go! Omeleto debuted a fun 6-minute film called Forever, an animated short about seemingly friendly garden gnomes going to war. The short is made by a group of students from ENSI (École Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs) in France and was debuted recently at the MyMetaStories festival. The only actual synopsis: “Garden gnomes battle an enemy.” It’s about a group of gnomes who realize they must fight back when a golf ball from a nearby golf course destroys one of their ranks. “This rambunctious animated short turns the seemingly whimsical subject – the quiet lives of garden gnomes – into a surprisingly suspenseful battle over life & dominion, told with thriller-like tension, robust humor and terrific energy.” Presented by UniFrance. With a score by Jérémie Esperet. No voices as it is a dialogue-free journey into a golf course battle-zone. There have been a bunch of animated movies about gnomes already: Gnomeo & Juliet (2011), Gnome Alone (2017), & Sherlock Gnomes (2018). Though I’d say this short is better than nearly all of those.

Forever Animated Short Film

Thanks to GeekTyrant for the tip on this short film. Extended intro from YouTube: “The story begins in a cheerful and peaceful backyard garden, where brightly painted gnomes stand proudly among flowers and trimmed grass in quirky poses and scenarios. Bathed in sunlight and silence, their existence is static yet content. But their serene existence is disrupted when a golf ball arcs over a fence and lands among them, damaging one of their numbers beyond repair. More balls soon land, cracking statues, scattering fragments, shattering the calm, and so the gnomes must band together to battle their unseen, nebulous yet powerful adversary.” Forever is a fun short film directed by a team of filmmakers: Theo Djekou, Pierre Ferrari, Cyrine Jouini, Pauline Philippart, & Anissa Terrier. Created at France’s École Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs. Debuted by Omeleto in partnership with Unifrance and its MyMetaStories festival. For more info, visit the film’s YouTube page. Dr. Dre, Ice-T, Snoop Dogg & Arabian Prince Unite for Animated Crime Series “Tehk City”

Hip-hop icons Dr. Dre, Ice-T, Snoop Dogg, and Arabian Prince are teaming up for an animated action drama titled Tehk City. The project, which Deadline describes as “gritty and stylized,” comes from Ambitious Entertainment and promises to blend street realism with futuristic storytelling.

According to Deadline, Dr. Dre will compose the original score for the series, while each artist will create and perform custom theme music for their respective characters — blending their musical legacies with the show’s dark, cinematic tone.

The voice cast brings serious star power. Ice-T, who also co-created the series alongside Arabian Prince and Tommy the Animator, will voice Mayor Chuck Davis. Snoop Dogg will play Pretty Black, and Arabian Prince will take on the role of Kenyatta Prince.

Additional cast members include Coco as Rhonda Knuckles, Treach as Maniac Maxx, plus appearances from Tracy Morgan, Mike Epps, Busta Rhymes, Roxanne Shanté, and others.

Tehk City is based on the graphic novel Death for Hire: The Origin of Tehk City, which first introduced the gritty underworld that the animated series will now expand. The story follows complex characters navigating power, loyalty, and betrayal in a crime-ridden city — with a soundtrack that reflects hip-hop’s raw edge.

Arabian Prince told Deadline, “Starring the homie Ice-T and a list of stars never before seen in one place, get ready to explore the origin leading up to the animated series of Tehk City — y’all ain’t ready.”

The project marks a major crossover between music and animation, uniting hip-hop’s most legendary voices in a world built from their own cultural influence.

Knightfall’ Animated Films Set at Warner Bros. Animation

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

A multi-part animated film adaptation of “Batman: Knightfall” is currently in production, Variety has learned.

The announcement was made at New York Comic-Con at the end of the Warner Bros. Animation panel “The Art Knight: Batman in Animation.” The first part of”Batman: Knightfall” is slated to debut in 2026, with an exact premiere date to be announced at a later time.

The film is based on the Batman comic book arc of the same name that was released in three parts between 1993 and 1994. It was created by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Peter David, Jo Duffy, Jim Aparo, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Balent.

It is widely regarded as one of the best Batman stories of all time.

The official logline states, “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

“Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall” is directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales serves as supervising producer alongside producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are executive producers.

“Knightfall” has never been directly adapted for the screen, though it has been referenced in numerous Batman projects over the years. Perhaps most famously, elements of the storyline were incorporated into the film “The Dark Knight Rises” starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Tom Hard as Bane.

Previous Batman animated films include “Batman: Death in the Family,” “Batman: The Killing Joke,” and “Batman: Under the Red Hood.”

“I don’t want to live in a world where he wins…” Netflix has unveiled the full trailer for a funky animated comedy movie titled The Twits, adapted right from Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name. Continuing their partnership with the Roald Dahl estate to adapt his work. It’s already ready and will be available to watch on Netflix in a few weeks. The Twits tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people on the face of the earth, and their epic battle against a family of magical Muggle-Wumps and two brave children who refuse to let the Twits’ cruelty win. From director Phil Johnston (Ralph Breaks the Internet), this animated movie features new music from David Byrne featuring Hayley Williams. The voice voice cast features Margo Martindale & Johnny Vegas, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ryan Lopez, Emilia Clarke, Natalie Portman , Timothy Simons, Nicole Byer, Jason Mantzoukas, Alan Tudyk, Mark Proksch, Rebecca Wisocky, and Charlie Berens. Johnston exclaims: “On behalf of the massive gaggle of weirdos who made this movie, we can’t wait for the world to meet our strange, ugly baby.” Ha. This looks so weird and wacky, exactly what we should be getting with any Roald Dahl movies these days. Check it out.

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Phil Johnston’s animation The Twits, direct from YouTube:

The Twits Movie Trailer

The Twits Movie Trailer

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Phil Johnston reimagines Roald Dahl’s iconic characters, Jim & Credenza Twit, in their first feature animated adventure. The Twits tells the story of Mr. & Mrs. Twit, the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia. But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave children and a family of magical Muggle-Wumps, are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city. A hysterically funny, wild ride of a film (chock-full of the Twits’ beloved tricks – from Wormy Spaghetti to the Dreaded Shrinks), The Twits is also a story for our times, about the never-ending battle between cruelty and empathy. The Twits is directed by animation filmmaker Phil Johnston, director of Ralph Breaks the Internet; co-writer Wreck-It Ralph, Cedar Rapids, co-writer Zootopia. Co-directed by Katie Shanahan & Todd Demong. The screenplay is written by Phil Johnston and Meg Favreau. Adapted from Roald Dahl’s novel. Produced by Phil Johnston, Maggie Malone, Daisy May West. With animation by Jellyfish Pictures (The Boss Baby, The Bad Guys). Netflix will release Johnston’s The Twits movie streaming on Netflix starting October 17th, 2025 this month. A story of the friendship between a livestock pig named Wilbur and a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur’s life is in danger, Charlotte tries to help him any way she can. Bringing to life once again one of the most cherished friendship stories of all time.
