Review: Animated Sci-Fi Film ‘Arco’ is a Wondrous Look into the Future

by Alex Billington
November 14, 2025

“Little boys don’t just fall from the sky. It’s as if his didn’t exist.” Oh he does exist! But only if you have the courage to imagine his future. Another wonderfully original animation creation from this year is a film titled Arco, a French animated feature made by illustrator / filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu as his feature directorial debut. Arco already premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year, and I caught up with it at the 2025 Sitges Film Festival this fall where I’m lucky to have been able to watch it on the big screen with an audience. It’s the latest hard sci-fi animated film I’ve seen since the excellent French film Mars Express a few years ago. This year we also have Pixar’s sci-fi movie Elio, which is quite similar to this one, about how one child’s life is changed by a sci-fi experience. Arco goes all out with a double dose of sci-fi world building, setting the film in the year 2932 and also in the year 2075. Ultimately it’s a story the cleverly plays with the time travel idea that you can and will influence the future by interacting with the future. I surprisingly loved this film & highly recommend it to those who enjoy science fiction no matter if it’s animation or otherwise.

Arco is directed by filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu, and co-written by Ugo Bienvenu & Félix de Givry, animated by Remembers. Before making this film, Bienvenu was making comic books as well as other animated projects. The story begins right away in the year 2932, where human beings live in a peaceful utopian society and fly around in rainbow suits while living in towers that ascend up into the clouds. While this visualization can be interpreted many ways, ultimately the film focuses on this rainbow as a motif for inspiring a brighter, better future. Arco is a 10-year-old boy from 2932 who gets too excited about flying around in his rainbow suit. He doesn’t know how to control it and flies right through time and crashes back in the year 2075. This timeline is already incredibly futuristic, with robot butlers and workers everywhere, and special domes built around residential neighborhoods to protect them from climate disasters. It’s a sad look at how bad climate change will get in the decades to come. In the year 2075, Iris finds Arco and takes him into her home, helping him find his way back to his time. This part is where the story also feels very humbly inspired by Studio Ghibli and their movies like Castle in the Sky with this endearing relationship between this young boy and girl as they head off of an adventure. They’re pursued by a kooky trio who want the rainbow crystal for themselves.

The story in Arco bounces around too much and gets a bit goofy in the middle with the trio after them + all the robots, but still offers an entirely engaging, exceptionally vivid storytelling experience. It’s a fascinating sci-fi fantasy fable about manifesting change and creating a better future through friendship and positivity. It’s so beautiful, impressively detailed, and entirely original in an imaginative way, with a lovely score (by Arnaud Toulon) – it’s exactly my kind of cinema. The world building in here is totally rad and lives up to what sci-fi can be. I especially enjoyed the futuristic sci-fi setting on top of another futuristic sci-fi setting. Two visions of our future! The whole experience is visually entrancing, with a potent story about being the change you want to see. Not just wishing for it to better and hoping someone else will make it happen – it’s about making that happen on your own. And it feels like a wholesome story for kids to enjoy, too. The film features an English language cast with Natalie Portman & Will Ferrell along with the original French voices – both versions are available to watch. It’s best to see it on the big screen, but either way, discovering and enjoying this adventure with Arco & Iris will leave you deeply inspired to actually go make a difference.

“It took 7 days to create the world, it only took one to disrupt its balance.” And let’s be honest – it’s all our fault. This mesmerizing animated short film is entirely worth a watch, especially if you love this planet and all the plants & animals on it. On the 8th Day is an 8 minute animated short film created by 5 students at the acclaimed Piktura animation school in France. The original French title is Au 8ème Jour and it was finished in 2023 – but it has been playing at film festivals and other events around the world for the pat 2 years. Now it’s online for everyone to enjoy thanks to Short of the Week. This is created with 3D animation but it has the same look & style of stop-motion animation, specifically felt & cloth & yarn animation usually made by hand. The short is an eco fable visualizing our interconnected world and the link between all living creatures on planet Earth. The pieces of yarn connect everything and everyone. Until darkness starts taking over… It’s a beautiful creation and the animals are so cute. Bravo to the team for crafting this stunning film.

Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one. Intro via YouTube: “It took 7 days to create the world, it only took one to disrupt its balance. This award-winning 3D animation mimics hand-crafted stop-motion to tell an environmentalist parable about the interconnectedness of all life. What elevates it is the remarkable polish of its execution, the genuine emotion it stirs, and an apocalyptic sense of scale and foreboding that feels attuned to the current moment.” On the 8th Day is an animated short film created by students at the acclaimed Piktura animation school based in Roubaix, France. You can find out more about the school on their official site. This was made by Agathe Sénéchal, Alicia Massez, Elise Debruyne, Flavie Carin, Théo Duhautois. Originally completed in 2023. Produced by Carlos De Carvalho. With original music by Thomas Peyrounette with Adèle Chavy on the violin. View the making of video here. For info on the film, visit SOTW or the film’s main page. “Prepare to go where no Wimpy Kid has gone before…” Disney+ has revealed the full trailer for a comedy called Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, the next movie in this animated series from the beloved book series. This is the fourth movie in this animated version of Wimpy Kid – following Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2022), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever (2023). Greg has to shape up… or get shipped out… When laidback Greg finds himself at odds with his dad’s outsized expectations, pressure builds to turn his act around. After a series of hilarious near disasters, Greg’s dad presents him with an ultimatum (go to military school!) — and a trip to wilderness camp — that just might challenge Greg’s wimpy ways for good. So Greg signs up for the talent show. Featuring the voices of Aaron Harris as Greg, Jude Zarzaur, Chris Diamantopoulos, Erica Cerra, Hunter Dillon, and Gracen Newton. This looks like another fun adventure with Greg and his family – always in more trouble.

Trailer for Wacky Animated Film ‘Endless Cookie’ About Half-Brothers

by Alex Billington
November 13, 2025
Source: YouTube

“The goal is to make something funny, beautiful, spiritual, political…” Obscured Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an animated film called Endless Cookie, a wacky, funky, clever documentary tale of two-half brothers in Canada. This originally premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the AFI, Hot Docs, MoMA, and London Film Festival. Endless Cookie is a new film from Seth & Pete Scriver – they’ve been painstakingly assembling it over 8 years. Two half-brothers, one Indigenous and one white, embark on a journey through time and place. They time travel from their remote home in Shamattawa to the vibrant urban landscape of the 1980s in Toronto. Pete & Seth are half-brothers. Pete is a First Nations carver, poet, mechanic and storyteller living in Shamattawa. He was recently nominated for a Hero award for saving his neighbors life by rescuing her from a house on fire. Seth is an artist, animator and carpenter living in Toronto. He won the Best Canadian First Feature at TIFF in 2013 for his animated feature Asphalt Watches. This is their first creation together. It’s a very odd, wacky film – reviews describe it as “the strangest, most seemingly nonsensical documentary in some time.” Looks super kooky and amusing.

Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Peter & Seth Scrivers’ animation Endless Cookie, from YouTube:

Endless Cookie Poster

Endless Cookie Poster

The film plays out like a particularly tangential fever dream–a colorful depiction of the many overlapping episodes of the brothers’ lives–from their upbringing in Downtown Toronto’s Kensington Market to Pete’s current residence in an isolated Northern Manitoba First Nation community. As they reminisce, their yarns are often punctuated, interrupted or else hijacked by the charismatic members of their family who indulge in their own reveries. Endless Cookie is at heart an impressionistic and often surreal depiction of family but it is also a documentary of the creative process. Endless Cookie is written and directed by half-brothers / filmmakers Peter Scriver & Seth Scriver (also a co-director on Asphalt Watches) making their first feature film. Produced by Seth Scriver, Dan Bekerman, Jason Ryle, Chris Yurkovich, Alex Ordanis. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Obscured Releasing debuts Peter & Seth Scrivers’ Endless Cookie film in select US theaters starting on December 5th, 2025 coming up soon.

Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa joins Wicked star in animated musical

Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa joins Wicked star in animated musical

by jummy84 November 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Ncuti Gatwa’s post-Doctor Who career has just added another major project, with the acclaimed actor taking a voice role in a major new animated film co-starring Wicked icon Cynthia Erivo.

Bad Fairies is a fantastical adventure slated for release in summer 2027, which follows a group of “delightfully subversive” fairies as they “shake up their magical world” (via Deadline).

Erivo was confirmed to star in the animated musical last month, with Gatwa being the latest addition to what looks poised to be an A-list voice cast; details about his character have not yet been disclosed.

Bad Fairies is written by comedian Deborah Frances-White (The Guilty Feminist), with Megan Nicole Dong (Netflix’s Centuarworld) and Oliver Staphylas (Wish Dragon) sharing directing duties.

Tony Award-winning songwriters Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss (best known for King Henry VIII-themed Six: The Musical) are also aboard the project, alongside composer Isabella Summers (a founding member of indie band Florence + The Machine).

For Gatwa, it marks his first major screen booking since a widely publicised exit from Doctor Who, after which the actor returned to the stage for West End runs on The Importance of Being Earnest and Born with Teeth.

Most recently, he was seen alongside Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in romcom The Roses, and coming up next he has The Queen of Fashion; a biopic about stylist Isabella Blow, starring Andrea Riseborough (Alice & Jack) in the lead role.

No doubt Bad Fairies will be hoping to draw in Wicked-sized numbers on the strength of Erivo’s musical prowess.

After numerous theatre gigs, including Sister Act and The Colour Purple, the British actor moved into film from 2018 with roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, Widows and Harriet, where she was Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman.

However, Erivo’s film career has reached new heights in the past year, following her debut as Elphaba Thropp in the blockbuster film adaptation of Wicked.

The first film made more than $750 million at the global box office, with similarly high expectations for the forthcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, which is set to conclude the Wizard of Oz-inspired story later this month.

Further casting and plot details for Bad Fairies will be announced in due course.

Bad Fairies is coming to cinemas in May 2027.

“Little boys don’t just fall from the sky… it’s as if he didn’t exist.” Time for an adventure! Neon has revealed their official trailer for a sci-fi animated adventure movie titled Arco, produced by Natalie Portman and directed by young French animation filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu (follow him @ugobienvenu) as his feature directorial debut after many comics. What if rainbows were actually time travelers flying across the sky? On his first flight through time, Arco crash lands from the year 3000 into our near future. His fall is witnessed by a little girl, Iris, who helps him return home. Set in 2075, a ten year old girl, Iris, meets Arco. He comes from an idyllic far future where time travel is possible. Iris shelters him and will do whatever it takes to help him return home. A wondrous odyssey filled with hope and optimism for our future, Arco is an enchanting fable from breakout filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu. The English-language voice cast for the US release features Will Ferrell, America Fererra, Flea, Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, and Andy Samberg. It’s set for release in theaters this November. Neon Releases French Animated Feature Oscar Contender

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

The final trailer for “Arco,” one of the main contenders for the Best Animated Feature film at the Oscars this year, has arrived.

Directed by first-time feature filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu and produced by Natalie Portman, “Arco” is a French film that takes visual inspiration from Studio Ghibli, with a blend between hand-drawn and CG animation. The trailer, soundtracked by a lilting piano melody, reveals the basic premise of the film, which focuses on a young boy named Arco from a distant and peaceful future, where humans live in the sky and use rainbow suits to fly through the air.

When he disobeys his parents and goes on a flight by himself, Arco winds up in the slightly more contemporary world of 2075, where humanity still lives on the ground, but has robots and other advanced technology and is contending with encroaching threats of climate change. There, he meets a girl named Iris, and sets out on a journey to find a way back to his own time.

Resurrection

“Arco” made its world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in May, where it played in the festival’s Special Screenings section. The movie received positive reviews from critics out of the festival; writing for IndieWire, Christian Blauvelt gave the film a “B-” and called it an “emotional sci-fi epic.” The film additionally won the Cristal Award for Best Feature Film at the 2025 Annecy Film Festival, and also played at the Animation is Film Festival in Los Angeles.

For its American release, the film will screen with an English dub that first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Child actors Romy Fay and Juliano Valdi voice Iris and Arco in the English version, while additional cast members include Portman, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Flea, Mark Ruffalo, and Andy Samberg. The original French version of the film included several prominent French film stars including Swann Arlaud of “Anatomy of a Fall” and Louis Garrel from “Little Women.”

Neon will release “Arco” in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, November 14. Watch the trailer for the film below.

Let them fight? Why not. Along with the awesome new Predator: Badlands movie hitting theaters this week, there’s an awesome new fan-made short film to enjoy as well. Predator: Fire and Stone is a quick 3-1/2 minute animated sci-fi action short made by a collection of young filmmakers – going under a series of online handles: Bauan Edits, Mr. Vega, and Fuzzeke on the music. The short is also inspired by a comic book series from a few years ago also called Predator: Fire and Stone, featuring this storyline crossover between two sci-fi creations: Prometheus and Predator. The short film features a fight scene between an Engineer humanoid from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012) movie who ends up attacked by a Predator Yautja. There’s not much more to the showdown than this. I guess it’s a riff on thinking these Engineer creatures would be formidable, but of course Predators always win any fight. Glad this was made by people not AI. Check it out.

Predator: Fire and Stone Short Film

Thanks to Bauan Edits on Twitter for the tip on this new short. Very brief synopsis from YouTube: “An epic encounter between a Predator and an Engineer.” Inspired by the iconic Dark Horse Comics event “Fire and Stone” from 2015, written by Joshua Williamson with art by Christopher Mooneyham and inspired by the animation style seen in Predator: Killer of Killers, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and co-directed by Josh Wassung. Predator: Fire and Stone is a short film created and directed by young filmmaker “Mr. Vega” aka Luis B. Vega from Lima, Peru – you can view more of his work on his YouTube page for follow him on IG @mrvegaofficial. He primarily uses Blender. Featuring an original score by “Fuzzeke” (@fuzzeke). With mocap and sound design by YouTube creator Bauan Edits (@bauanedits). And 3D animation by Mr. Vega. Posted on their YouTube – for more info click there. The adventure continues! Arka Mediaworks has revealed the first epic teaser for Baahubali: The Eternal War, an animated spin-off series of movies currently in the works. Arka just re-released both of the original two Baahubali movies as one massive Baahubali: The Epic which just hit theaters around the world. After the cliffhanger that ended Baahubali: The Beginning, The Eternal War will follow the betrayed & murdered prince Amarendra Baahubali (voiced again by superstar Prabhas) into the afterlife. Heart aching for those he left behind, Amarendra Baahubali finds himself at the center of an ancient cosmic war between devas and asuras. As he navigates through the 14 realms of existence, he forges an unlikely alliance, confronts divine forces, and fights to restore balance to the cosmos. Ramya Krishna also reprises her role from the films, voicing Sivagami again. These new animated movies are presented by Baahubali’s creator S.S. Rajamouli, and will feature screenplays written by Kevin Smith’s former producer Scott Mosier, and music by M.M. Keeravani. This first look teaser has new animation footage + some footage from the movies to get people hyped up even more. I dig the style of this – clearly inspired by Into the Spider-Verse and I’m fine with that.

Here’s the first teaser trailer for Ishan Shukla’s animation Baahubali: The Eternal War, from YouTube:

“When Ishan brought us the idea of expanding the Baahubali universe into a stylised animated epic, it clicked instantly. It feels like a seamless, organic extension of the world we built, one that will thrill long‑time fans and invite new audiences in. I am excited to bring these two films to the big screen.” –Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli

Baahubali: The Eternal War Teaser

Set in the wake of the iconic cliffhanger that ended Baahubali: The Beginning, The Eternal War will follow the betrayed and murdered prince Amarendra Baahubali (voiced by Telugu cinema titan Prabhas in a reprisal of his film role) into the afterlife. His heart aching for those he left behind, Amarendra Baahubali finds himself at the center of an ancient cosmic war between Devas & Asuras. As he navigates through 14 realms of existence, he forges an unlikely alliance, confronts divine forces beyond mortal comprehension, & fights to restore balance to the cosmos. Baahubali: The Eternal War is directed by animation filmmaker Ishan Shukla, director of Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust and “The Bandits of Golak” episode of Star Wars: Visions previously. The screenplay is written by Scott Mosier (producer of many Kevin Smith movies); with dialogue by Deva Katta & Madhan Karky. Based on a story by Ishan Shukla & Sowmya Sharma. Produced by Prasad Devineni and Shobu Yarlagadda. Arka Mediaworks will debut Part 1 of Baahubali: The Eternal War animation in theaters sometime in 2027. Stay tuned for any more updates.
