Camila Cabello Covers Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn’ on Piano in Australia

Camila Cabello surprised fans with a piano-ballad rendition of “Torn,” the single that became Natalie Imbruglia’s breakthrough hit on U.S. radio in 1998, at a pair of shows in Australia this week (Aug. 27 and 30).

Melbourne and Sydney, two of the final stops on Cabello’s Yours, C Tour — the C,XOXO singer has a Sept. 14 concert slated for São Paulo, Brazil — were a fitting setting to cover “Torn,” recorded by the Australian-born Imbruglia for her 1997 debut studio album, Left of the Middle. Seated at the piano at both gigs, Cabello channeled the sincerity of Imbruglia’s vocal performance on “Torn, and on Saturday night shared a video of one of her performances on X.

“when in australia… you have to sing torn,” Cabello captioned the clip. “ily natalie imbruglia & ily australia.”

Imbruglia’s “Torn” soared to No. 1 on a trio of Billboard charts (Radio Songs, Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay) in 1998, and peaked at No. 42 on the Hot 100. She was nominated for a Grammy for best female pop vocal performance for “Torn,” but ultimately lost to Celine Dion and her inescapable “My Heart Will Go On.” Though Imbruglia’s take on “Torn” is the one most pop fans know, it was actually a cover for her, too — as the song was first released by the band Ednaswap in 1995.

Imbruglia’s released a total of six albums throughout her career, with 2021’s Firebird being her most recent. She performed under the guise of “Bluebell” on The Masked Singer last year.

New Edition Reflects On Legacy Amid Street Renaming In Boston Hometown

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

August 30 will officially be known as “New Edition Day” in Boston.

The acclaimed, pioneering R&B sextet celebrated the honor along with a street naming ceremony in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where the the group was founded. “New Edition Way” will be housed at the corner of Ambrose and Albany Streets near Orchard Gardens (formerly Orchard Park Projects).

“It’s prestigious without a doubt,” Johnny Gill told VIBE of the feat. “To just know that 42 years of what we’ve done here as a group […] there’s a level of contribution that has been made from each and every one of us. When you look at this type of prestige, it’s written in stone. [Our impact] can’t be erased […] The hard work that’s been put in here has paid off in a great way.”

Michael Bivins, who was raised in those housing projects, reflected on a fonder, full circle memory. “The center where it’s going to happen at, that’s where we met,” he shared. “We used to eat in that center. We would get a free meal if you was in the gym […] and a lot of us was taking trays if food was left over.”

He continued, “To have the street [renaming] is one thing, but to have [it] right in front of the gym is another thing.”

Ronnie DeVoe praised his uncle, Brooke Payne, for being the true visionary behind New Edition and laying the foundation for their longevity. He noted, “It’s a testament to the gifts that God gave us and the talents that God gave us and Uncle B honing those skills to the point where the rough turned into the diamonds that we are today. To connect to our city and be recognized with something that’s going to be there forever is truly amazing.”

Not only did the men discuss the present commemoration like the community block party and giveaways, but also pondered how New Edition Day would be celebrated in the future. Considering it’s so close to their group anniversary (Sept. 9), they agreed that the celebration will be “ongoing” and most likely, combined— but not in a traditional sense.

Bivins spoke the different neighborhoods within the city of Boston that most people stay away from and confessed that his goal is unity across the board with New Edition at the forefront.

“There’s people in certain hoods that don’t go to certain places and it’s just what it is. It’s been that way for years. If we could find neutral zones to celebrate, that’s what I hope we do with years to go,” he explained.

For those unfamiliar with Boston territories, Bivins compared his neighborhood to New York City. “Roxbury is considered like Harlem. Queens is like Dorchester and Brooklyn is kind of considered like Dorchester [or] Mattapan.”

Despite Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown, and Ralph Tresvant not being present for the conversation, Gill, Bivins, and DeVoe confessed that New Edition still has new dreams that they want to see come true— like getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame among other things. They also just want to continue to remain in good health and spirits.

Bivins added, “I think that’s so important for us because of the taxing that it takes to be New Edition and the commitment that it takes. The fact that we’re living to talk to each other is just so important. Those are the things that I think are in front of us that keeps us being unique and trendsetters and just being special.”

Overall, similar to Jermaine Dupri’s recent praise of New Edition, they all agree, “It’s about time.”

The Tragically Hip: Fully Completely Album Review

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Maybe Downie was just drawing a parallel between the inexperienced Henry Hudson, who piloted the ill-fated flight that went down with Barilko, and the neophyte pilots of the Allied Air Forces. But it’s difficult to ignore the imperfections in this image of elite military pilots, these dashing and supposedly unquestionable heroes. Some of them were just kids. Some of them weren’t heroes at all—at least not yet. They were working it in. And if that image of Canadian history could be complicated so quickly, as a chaser to a story about a vanished hockey player, everything was questionable.

Elsewhere the lyrics were more directly adversarial. “Wheat Kings” was torn straight from the headlines, an acoustic track about David Milgaard, a 17-year-old wrongly convicted of a brutal rape and murder in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Milgaard served 23 years in prison before being released earlier that summer of 1992, and eventually fully exonerated. The song begins in a watercolor image of rural Canada, Downie singing of “sundown in the Paris of the Prairies,” but the veil is quickly pulled back to reveal the nightmare in Milgaard’s mind, “where the walls are lined all yellow, grey and sinister/Hung with pictures of our parents’ prime ministers.” Five of them had served in the time it took Milgaard to be convicted, suffer behind bars, and find freedom.

Most urgent of all was “Looking for a Place to Happen,” which told the bloody and bitter story of European annexation of Native land from two perspectives. First, Downie gave voice to French explorer Jacques Cartier, who callously wanted “To find a place, an ancient race/The kind you’d like to gamble with,” before shifting the focus to an indigenous person fleeing for their life: “I’ll paint a scene, from memory/So I’d know who murdered me.” The Hip were not telling the story of a harmonious country. Everywhere on Fully Completely, there seemed to be injustice and death, a beautiful-seeming facade melting away to reveal something grotesque and disturbing.

Fully Completely exploded upon release in Canada, selling 200,000 copies in its five weeks. In the States, it performed so poorly that MCA pulled their marketing budget for it just a fortnight after its release. “Two weeks before the record comes out, all the record company is saying is, ‘It’s gonna be big boys, look out!’ Then the week after, no one returns our calls,” Sinclair said. “That’s the way it is.”

By July 1993, the band’s own optimism had curdled. In an interview with the Calgary Herald, drummer Gord Sinclair put it down to an attitude south of the border. “I think Americans have this weird thing about Canada,” he said. “They look north and figure it’s just the 52nd state. Being from Canada really does not have much of an impact for them. They just sort of assume that you’re a second-class American or American with a funny accent or French.”

Snoop Dogg Says ‘My Bad’ Over His Comments on ‘Lightyear’ Gay Couple

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” rapper says

Snoop Dogg has addressed the controversial comments he made over his response to his grandson’s questions about a same-sex couple in Lightyear, and the backlash that ensued.

“My bad,” he wrote in a comment on an Instagram post shared on Wednesday from Hollywood Unlocked. It features the hosts discussing Snoop Dogg’s comments with media personality Ts Madison.

“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” he wrote. “All my gay friends [know] what’s up, they been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”

During a recent appearance on the It’s Giving… Podcast, Snoop told a story about watching Lightyear with his grandson when Snoop said his grandson asked him, “‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman.’ Ah shit, I didn’t come in here for this shit. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.” Snoop said he encouraged his grandson to just watch the movie, but his grandson continued to ask more questions.

“I’m scared to go to the movies now,” Snoop said. “Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.” In a since-deleted part of the podcast, he said that the Lightyear scene “threw me for a loop,” adding, “I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Trending Stories

Lightyear screenwriter Lauren Gunderson also responded to the topic on Wednesday.  “So. I created the LIGHTYEAR lesbians,” Gunderson wrote in a statement on Instagram. Gunderson detailed that “a key character needed a partner, and it was so natural to write ‘she’ instead of ‘he.’ As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it.

“I’m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love,” Gunderson continued. “I was one of a few writers they had on it over the years, which is very common for screenwriting of course. I had very little to do with the final script. But I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of shit for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists.”

Tucanes de Tijuana, Chalino Sánchez Together on ‘Rigo Campos’

by jummy84 August 31, 2025

Chalino Sánchez, the “King of Corridos,” would have turned 65 on Aug. 30. While his tragic murder in May 1992 ended his life, his musical legacy continues to thrive.

See latest videos, charts and news

Thanks to technology, some of his timeless recordings are being brought back to life through collaborations with other artists. Fifteen of Sánchez’s tracks, owned by Cintas Acuario — a label based in Long Beach, California — are being reimagined for a new project.

“I bought the songs from him; they’re mine. That’s how we did business,” Pedro Rivera, owner of the label, shared exclusively with Billboard Español. (Rivera is the father of regional Mexican music stars Lupillo Rivera and the late Jenni Rivera.) “We respected each other deeply. Chalino was one of the most loyal men I’ve ever met — he always kept his word.”

The first release from this project is “Rigo Campos,” a song written more than 30 years ago by Mario Quintero, the lead singer of Los Tucanes de Tijuana. Chalino recorded his own version back in the day, but the two never met in person. Now, through the magic of technology, they’re singing together in a music video that premiered on Thursday, Aug. 28.

“It took over three years from the first meeting to today’s release,” Quintero, thrilled by the song’s reception, told Billboard Español. It has already become a trending topic in Mexico. “Unfortunately, I never got the chance to meet Chalino… [But] technology made it possible for Los Tucanes and Chalino to appear together in the video as if he were still here.”

Sánchez rose to fame in the late ’80s and early ’90s with his corridos in the California music scene. His raw, unpolished voice and straightforward style resonated with migrant communities and working-class listeners. Songs like “Nieves de Enero,” “Alma Enamorada” and “Baraja de Oro” became classics.

On May 16, 1992, he was murdered in Culiacán, Sinaloa, after a performance. He was only 31 years old.

Quintero, who as the leader of Los Tucanes heads one of the most respected norteño and corrido groups in the market, spoke to Billboard Español about “Rigo Campos,” the current restrictions on corridos in Mexico, and even a possible World Cup anthem in the works:

Billboard Español: What are the Origins of “Rigo Campos”?

Quintero: The song is based on a well-known event in Tijuana, I think it was around 1991. It was talked about a lot on the news in both Mexico and the U.S. Back then, we were just starting out, and even to this day, I draw inspiration from real-life events. I wrote the song, and it became popular locally. I used to go to record stores to check out new releases and see if anyone had recorded one of my songs. One day, I was surprised to find the song on a cassette by Chalino Sánchez. I remember opening it and seeing that it credited him as the author. My excitement immediately turned to disappointment. Turns out, he had heard it from us, liked it and recorded it with Cintas Acuario. The song was already registered to me, so we cleared everything up.

How did this particular collaboration come about?

Juan Rivera [Pedro Rivera’s son] reached out to invite me to take part in this album they’re producing with Chalino’s songs. I thought it was such an exciting idea, and of course, I was honored to include my song. It took over three years from our first meeting to now releasing “Rigo Campos.” We’re overjoyed with the public’s response. Unfortunately, I never got to meet Chalino. There was this one time he had a press conference in Tijuana, but we were busy working and couldn’t go. I had wanted to thank him for recording my song, but the opportunity never came up. Now, through technology, we were able to bring him back to life in the video, and it’s as if he’s really there with us. It was a huge effort by the teams at Cintas Acuario and Master Q Music to make it happen. The hardest part was bringing Chalino’s essence into the present, but they nailed it.

Why do you think Chalino’s legacy endures so many years after his death?

Chalino had this unique ability to take well-known songs and make them his own with his distinctive style. That’s what made him so successful. Of course, he was also heavily criticized, but people couldn’t ignore his authenticity. He wasn’t trying to imitate anyone — he was born to be an original, and that’s why he’s still such a massive influence in norteño and banda music. Producing this song was such a fulfilling experience. Listening to his voice straight from the original tapes, you realize how powerful it was. He didn’t need backing vocals; he was naturally in tune and simply incredible. Back then, there wasn’t the technology we have now, so hearing him sing was truly special. Recording this duet with him now feels like a dream come true. It didn’t happen before, but it’s happening now — and that’s what matters.

What do you think of the current bands and restrictions of corridos in Mexico?

We love corridos, but we also respect the rules in every place we perform. We understand the situation. The problem isn’t with corridos themselves; there are broader social issues at play. I think the authorities have good intentions, and we always follow any rules or restrictions. For example, at our recent show at the Auditorio Telmex in Guadalajara, we weren’t allowed to perform any corridos. Of course, some fans wanted to hear them, but we respect the law. At the end of the day, the law is the law, and we have to follow it as citizens. Where we’re allowed to perform corridos, we will. Where we’re not, we’ll just play “La Chona” three times, or “El Tucanazo,” or “Me Gusta Vivir de Noche.” We’ve got plenty of songs in our repertoire.

Speaking about “La Chona,” it’s become a major hit and played in many sporting events. Any plans to use it during the World Cup?

As the composer of “La Chona,” it’s such an honor and a privilege to see it still going strong. Every day, we get videos from all over the world of people dancing and singing along to it. When we first recorded it, I didn’t even like the song that much — I preferred others. But it carved out its own place, and now, more than 30 years later, new generations are still loving it. For the World Cup, we’re working on a project that I think fans are going to love. In the meantime, we’re heading to Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Guatemala and Bolivia this year, and next year we’ll be taking our music to Spain. Europe is becoming such an important market for regional Mexican music.

A few days ago you played for over 100,000 people. Why do Los Tucanes still draw big crowds?

I think we’ve earned the love of our fans through our music and the way we are. Los Tucanes are one of those groups that can do it all — romantic songs, corridos, cumbias — we mix norteño music with other genres. I think that’s why we have such a special place in people’s hearts. There are also people who grew up listening to our music but never got to see us live, so they come to our shows now. And it’s so touching to see multiple generations at our concerts — parents, kids, even grandparents. It’s such a blessing.

The City of Boston celebrated New Edition on Saturday (Aug. 30) by declaring it to be “New Edition Day” as the corner of the center where most of the group was raised was renamed to “New Edition Way.”

Mayor Michelle Wu called it an “honor” to “welcome home Roxbury natives New Edition to celebrate their global impact, from our communities here in Boston to the music industry worldwide.”

Bobby Brown said the honor “means the world to me,” since “Boston is where it all began for us.” Ricky Bell added, “I am truly grateful for the privilege of being made a permanent fixture in our city that has played such a significant role in shaping our lives and career. It brings me immense joy to think that future generations of my family, friends, and #NE4Lifers from all over the world will be able to walk and drive down New Edition Way. This honor is mind-blowing in the most awesome way. 02119 IS and WILL always be my home.”

Johnny Gill described the feat to VIBE as “prestigious” whereas Michael Bivins reveled over the “full circle” moment. Ronnie DeVoe added, “It’s a testament to the gifts that God gave us and the talents that God gave us and Uncle [Brooke Payne] honing those skills to the point where the rough turned into the diamonds that we are today. To connect to our city and be recognized with something that’s going to be there forever is truly amazing.”

All six members, along with members of the community, former BET executive Stephen Hill, and more, gathered in Boston for the ceremony and community block party. It was held in front of the Orchard Gardens Boys & Girls Club and featured music, a backpack giveaway for youth, free food, fun activities and a special appearance by the group.

9 New Albums You Should Listen to Now: Sabrina Carpenter, Blood Orange, and More

Devonté Hynes’ return as Blood Orange follows a period of relative quiet (his last studio album, Negro Swan, came out in 2019) in which his status has nonetheless ballooned. As well as having his old classic “Uncle Ace” synced in a memorable Challengers scene, Hynes has essayed further into classical music, whose form and texture color the eclectic borders of new album Essex Honey. Joining him for the indie-pop odyssey is an armada of guests: Lorde, Caroline Polachek, Daniel Caesar, Mustafa, Turnstile’s Brendan Yates, Ian Isiah, Tirzah, Amandla Stenberg, and Zadie Smith, among others.

The Beths: Straight Line Was a Lie [Anti-]

“I thought I was getting better, but I’m back to where I started,” the Beths singer Elizabeth Stoke admits when opening the band’s first album in three years. After feeling frustrated by songwriting stall-outs and the nonlinear trajectory of life’s highs and lows, the Beths learned that creativity can’t be lost; you just need to find alternate pathways to it sometimes—hence the album’s title, Straight Line Was a Lie. From the ironic thrills of “No Joy” to the confessional “Mother, Pray for Me,” the New Zealand indie-rockers find their groove again after the surreal feeling of breaking out with 2022’s Expert in a Dying Field.
