Naomi Osaka Slams Jelena Ostapenko’s Worst Comment To Taylor Townsend

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Naomi Osaka has weighed in on the heated on-court drama between Latvian tennis star Jelena Ostapenko and African-American champion Taylor Townsend during their U.S. Open match on Wednesday (Aug. 27). The showdown ended with Townsend coming out on top, 7-5 and 6-1.

After shaking hands, Ostapenko was seen having an intense exchange with Townsend accusing her of having “no class” and “no education” after the Chicago native refused to apologize for benefiting from a net cord. The latter happens when a ball clips the net before dropping in play.

Townsend, however, held her ground and reportedly told her opponent, “No, I don’t have to say sorry.”

The exchange didn’t sit right with fellow Tennis champ, Osaka, who didn’t mince words when asked about the controversy.

“I think obviously it’s one of the worst things you can say to a Black tennis player in a majority White sport,” the 27-year-old four-time Grand Slam champion told reporters. “And granted, I know Taylor and I know how hard she’s worked and I know how smart she is, so she’s the furthest thing from uneducated or anything like that.”

Osaka, who has faced Ostapenko on the court multiple times, then hinted that this isn’t the first time the player has crossed a line. “If you’re genuinely asking me about the history of Ostapenko, I don’t think that’s the craziest thing she’s said,” she admitted. “I think it’s ill timing and the worst person you could have ever said it to. And I don’t know if she knows the history of it in America.”

Speaking to ESPN after the match, Townsend said, “People get upset when they lose. Some people say bad things.” She later doubled down in a press conference, explaining, “There’s no beef. But again, like you guys saw, I didn’t back down because you’re not going to insult me, especially after I carried myself with nothing but respect. If I show respect to you, I expect respect as well.”

Ostapenko, on the other hand, took to Instagram Stories to defend herself, denying any racist intent. “Wow how many messages I received that I am a racist. I was NEVER racist in my life and I respect all nations of people in the world, for me it doesn’t matter where you come from,” she wrote. She maintained that Townsend was “disrespectful” for not following what she described as unwritten tennis courtesy.

While Ostapenko insisted she meant no harm, Osaka says she believes the backlash will make the tennis player think twice in the future. “I know she’s never going to say that ever again in her life,” Osaka forshadowed. “But yeah, I mean, it was just terrible. Like, that’s just really bad.”

Take a look at the intense exchange above and Naomi Osaka’s comments.

CMAT: EURO-COUNTRY Album Review | Pitchfork

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Mothball the cardigans, fluff the feathers, and zhuzh the tulle. lowercase is OVER. It’s all names in lights now. Letters 10 feet high, blazing wattage, full razzle dazzle. The showgirl was back even before Earth’s most famous fiancée ordained it in her new album title: extroverted triple threats hitting every single base, their turbo charisma shaking off the fetid blanket of the pandemic years and smashing through flattened platform hell. Add CMAT to their number. The Irish musician born Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson is a born entertainer: a ham, a wit, a diva who pioneered the bold art of bum cleavage at last year’s BRIT awards. Awe-struck critics have deemed her every cheeky festival performance this summer a heist, a runaway bolt for the big leagues after several years on the slow burn.

A while before “going Nashville” became pop’s default, CMAT was making her name on showstopping Celtic country numbers. In her early 20s, she was depressed, recently single, working as a nightclub shots girl, and trying and failing to make hyperpop to indulge her Charli obsession. She suddenly found her focus by writing the tearcatcher “I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!” “And I feel bad, ’cause I didn’t cry/When someone I grew up with died/But I break down every time I’m on the scales,” she sang, minting her knack for self-aware tragedy, and, in its swaying chorus, for classic melodies. “Cowboy” was the highlight of her 2022 debut, If My Wife New I’d Be Dead. A year later, Crazymad, for Me upped the hit rate with the brilliantly blousy John Grant collaboration “Where Are Your Kids Tonight?” and jaunty fiddle kiss-off “Have Fun!” These songs showed an artist who had the voice of a barmaid Adele, the rhinestone cool of latter-day Jenny Lewis, and comedic chops all her own. “Huh, silly bitch, woo!” she trills in “Have Fun!”, realizing what a sucker she was for giving her ex all her cash.

Her third album in four years, EURO-COUNTRY, is the first to fully realize CMAT’s poly-threat potential. The songwriting packs a new punch and a ferocious sense of yearning. It mixes so many layers—humor, devastation, irrational rage at seeing celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s face everywhere, politics, a distinct Irishness that has nothing to do with Claddagh rings and splitting the G—and pretty much nails them all.

CMAT coined the title EURO-COUNTRY as a literal descriptor of her sound, a reference to her home country, which became one of the first nations to adopt the Euro currency, in January 1999, and to how capitalism breeds isolation. This is an almost impossible needle to thread, and the title track (and first proper song) does it beautifully. It works at surface level as a sweeping ballad, the bittersweet chorus of “my Euro-Euro-Euro-country” serving both as a tribute and a lament. This huge song also reveals CMAT as a master of lyrical economy as she outlines the impact of growing up through the “Celtic Tiger” period of rapid economic growth in the late ’90s, when Ireland was transformed into a wealthy nation thanks in part to foreign investment and low corporate taxes. It didn’t last: It collapsed during the financial crash, leaving a trail of destruction. In a few brief, matter-of-fact lines, CMAT covers how colonization and globalized ambitions stripped away Irish identity; how political corruption and financial failure blighted the country with unfinished “ghost” housing estates and an epidemic of male suicides: “I was 12 when the das started killing themselves all around me,” she sings. The song bears so much weight and tells us exactly who she is: “And no one says it out loud,” she sings, “but I know it can be better if we hound it.”

Will ‘Borderlands 4’ be on Game Pass at launch?

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Borderlands 4 is almost here, and players are keen to know how they can jump in and play at launch. For example, will the game be available on Game Pass or other subscription services.

  • READ MORE: Complete breakdown of all ‘Borderlands 4′ Vault Hunters

Here is what we know.

Unfortunately, Borderlands 4 is not set to launch on Game Pass at launch. 2K hasn’t made any announcement about the game launching on any subscription service, so you will have to pay full price to jump into the game’s launch on September 12, 2025.

This could change. After all, we have seen Borderlands games released on PS Plus and Game Pass after launch. However, you will likely have to wait a few years before that happens, as the game is expected to be a big seller, so 2K will want to sell as many copies as possible before offering it for free. If this changes at any point, we will be sure to update this guide.

“Borderlands 4 brings intense action, badass Vault Hunters, and billions of wild and deadly weapons to an all-new planet ruled by a ruthless tyrant. Crash into Kairos as one of four new Vault Hunters seeking wealth and glory. Wield powerful Action Skills, customize your build with deep skill trees, and dominate enemies with dynamic movement abilities. Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. Now a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing Mayhem across the planet.”

For even more on the game, check out the Nintendo Switch 2 release date of the game and what early previews have said about the game. Gearbox has confirmed the writing will be better with this entry. Be sure to stick around for launch, as we will have more coverage and details about Borderlands 4. You can also check out the Twitch Drops, which are available to claim now.

Sabrina Carpenter's 'Man's Best Friend': Five Takeaways

Sabrina Carpenter ‘Man’s Best Friend’ Album Review

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s not easy to be a convincing humorist in pop music. By design, lyrics are always meant to be a little quirky but few pop stars have mastered the art of hamming it up quite like Sabrina Carpenter. On Man’s Best Friend, Carpenter is in break-up mode the only way she could be: sad but still horny and altogether self-aware.

Just a year out from her blockbuster breakthrough Short n’ Sweet, the singer’s seventh album was created with a tight crew who had been integral to her previous release: Jack Antonoff, Amy Allen and John Ryan. Together with Carpenter’s innuendo-laden wit at the helm, the album zeroes in on the updated Seventies pastiche that worked so well on her biggest hits. She’s a little bit ABBA and a lotta bit Dolly: the Pennsylvania-native hits a charming Southern twang over swathes of synths, airy guitar riffs, and funky nü-disco beats. Her new songs are united in their grooviness as Carpenter’s heartbreak and disappointment in her male options takes her on a thoroughly modern tour of what dating, embracing, and then flipping the script on the humiliation ritual that is being a woman who dates men.

From the opening “Oh, boy” on “Manchild,” Carpenter spends the entire album dishing out tough love for her lovers, unrelenting in listing out her grievances. On “Tears,” she only “gets wet at the thought” of him “being a responsible guy.” On both “My Man on Willpower” and “Nobody’s Son,” she’s exhausted by her lover’s selective control. On the former, they’re together but he’s not as touchy and clingy and feral for her as he used to be. On the latter, they’ve broken up and he hasn’t caved on calling her yet.

Carpenter has few peers these days when it comes to turning some of the most uncomfortable or even painful feelings when you’re crying over an ex into giggle-worthy treats. “Never Getting Laid” stands out. The slow burning, sexy song has her wishing the best for her ex — so long as he stays in his house and never looks or touches another woman again. She drinks the pain away on “Go Go Juice,” running through the numbers on her phone over a two-steppin’ beat that belongs in your local honky tonk.

Editor’s picks

The two standouts on the album are when Carpenter is at her flirtiest and her wit is at its quickest. The funky “When Did You Get Hot?” has her encountering a long time acquaintance who she didn’t remember looking so cute. “You were an ugly kid, but you’re a sexy man,” she comments, in a line that can only work with her winking delivery. “House Tour,” a coulda-been Song of the Summer contender if only it had come out a month earlier, is bold enough to have made 1983 Madonna seethe with jealousy. She’s beckoning a new lover to come see her house because she’s “just so proud of [her] design.” On the chorus she assures “I just want you to come inside/But never enter through the back door.

It may have taken Carpenter six albums to finally find the right formula that works for her as a budding pop diva, but now it’s clear there’s no looking back. If Short n’ Sweet solidified her stardom, Man’s Best Friend plates her status in gold.

Calendar of New Movie Releases

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Looking for new family movies to watch? This Billboard Family calendar is a roundup of 2025 kid and family movie releases that should be appropriate for most ages. To help people find picks that the entire family can enjoy together, only rated PG movies — or those that are expected to be rated PG — are included on the list.

Plenty of family films open in 2025. Winter and spring highlights for kids included January’s Paddington in Peru, the third installment of the hit movie series starring the sweet children’s literature character Paddington Bear, and the March release of Disney’s Snow White, the live-action version of Walt Disney Productions’ 1937 animated classic, starring Rachel Zegler.

Summer brought theatrical releases such as June’s Elio, a Pixar original described as a “comedic misadventure” that’s about an 11-year-old alien-and-space fanatic who’s transported to an “interplanetary paradise that is home to intelligent life from galaxies far and wide,” and August’s Freakier Friday, with stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reuniting in a sequel to the 2003 family comedy that had the mother-daughter duo swapping bodies.

Looking ahead to fall 2025 in the kid and family movie space, part two of Universal’s Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good, arrives in theaters in late November — a month that also packs in Disney’s Zootopia 2 and Netflix’s In Your Dreams as the holiday season begins.

Among the most anticipated 2026 animated movie releases are Super Mario World (April 2026) and Toy Story 5 (June 2026). Family movies that do not yet have a release date, but are expected in 2026, include stop-motion dark fantasy Wildwood from Laika, the studio behind 2009’s Coraline; the opening for this film will be updated on the calendar once announced.

Bookmark this page and check back to see the latest updates to Billboard Family‘s calendar of 2025 movie releases for kids and families.

My Chemical Romance’s “The Black Parade Tour” Is a True Emo Arena Spectacle: Review

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

My Chemical Romance has always had a penchant for theater. Really, it more or less comes with their brand of wildly popular, larger than life emo rock. From their visual aesthetic to their high-concept ideas to the quiver of frontman Gerard Way’s voice, MCR’s popularity in no small part comes from their willingness to throw themselves into angsty, story-driven melodrama, and they perhaps never did it better than on their seminal 2006 rock opera The Black Parade. Cold take, I know, but as their latest run of concerts, the “Long Live: The Black Parade Tour,” proves, the record and all of its accompanying theatrics still resonate 20 years later.

The ongoing tour, which included Friday night’s stop at Chicago’s Soldier Field, isn’t the first time My Chemical Romance has undergone a Sgt. Pepper-esque transformation into “The Black Parade.” Following the album’s initial release, the band embarked on a jaunt that saw them embrace the moniker and perform the record in full. Though “The Black Parade” was canonically killed off at the end of that tour, MCR brought the concept back post-reunion for a pair of headlining sets at the When We Were Young music festival in 2024. As they bring their fictional counterparts back in 2025 for a series of select shows at baseball and football stadiums around the country, they’re following a similar structure, ripping through The Black Parade top-to-bottom before a second mini-set of songs from the rest of their catalog.

Get My Chemical Romance Tickets Here

How does such a performance fare in 2025? Remarkably well, actually, thanks to the production value and sheer spectacle of the whole ordeal.

As MCR makes their way through the 13 tracks of The Black Parade (plus a reprise of “The End.” and a pre-recorded playback of the album’s hidden track “Blood”), a loose narrative with themes of fascism, rebellion, and (you guessed it) death plays out in the background. There are choreographed set pieces in between songs, non-band characters like guest opera singers and ever-present dictators who sit in the audience, parodies of propagandistic media, and, by the end, plenty of pyrotechnics.

Related Video

Then there’s the headline-making, audience interaction element: the execution by vote. Admittedly, it’s a pretty fun gimmick made all the better by Way’s over-the-top, inconsistently-accented protagonist. For Chicago specifically, there seemed to be some issue when it came to distributing the red and black placards throughout the massive stadium. (I, on the other hand, somehow ended up with a full stack of them — there’s a metaphor about the state of democracy in there somewhere…) Luckily, though, the band was able to improvise their way out of any awkward moments, resulting in no cracks in the show’s immersion.

By the end, Way’s attempts to break out of whatever system he’s trapped within fail, as he’s eventually stabbed to death while the rest of the band is ransacked. Brutal stuff, but what else could a fan expect from The Black Parade themselves?

Speedy Mormon Recaps Interview With Ace About "NicOlandria" Remark

Speedy Mormon Recaps Interview With Ace About “NicOlandria” Remark

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Ace Greene’s first and only solo interview since appearing on Season 7 of Love Island has exploded following his remarks about finalist couple Olandria Carthen and Nic Vansteenberghe — who fans have nicknamed “NicOlandria.”

When asked of the couple’s authenticity by journalist Speedy Mormon, Ace hinted that their relationship might only be surface level. His silence and remarks left the internet in shambles, with some dubbing him a “hater” and others agreeing with his words. Offering more insight into what may have been said by Ace off-camera, Speedy hopped online to address their viral sit-down.

“I do want to say that some people may have more information than you,” Speedy reminded critics, subtly defending Ace’s claim that Nic admitted to only being physically attracted to Olandria. “They may be aware of things that transpired that you don’t know. They may have seen and witnessed things that you have not.”

Speedy went on to say, “You may see someone have an opinion on a relationship… I would say maybe, just maybe they know something that you don’t,” before abruptly adding, “Because if what I was told off camera is true….”

In the 1 hour and 11 minute video, the 23-year-old recalled to Speedy, “Going into this villa, you know, my intention was to get to know someone through and through for them,” reflecting on his journey that ultimately ended with him leaving in an exclusive relationship with Michelle “Chelley” Bissainthe.

He also admitted there was inauthenticity happening in the Villa. “I feel like going into this villa and people were asking me, ‘What’s your following?’ and ‘What do you think it’s gonna be outside of this?’ I don’t feel people [had] genuine intentions.”

When Speedy asked if Nic and Olandria’s romance was real, Ace’s silence was louder than words. Although he admitted to having “a lot of respect for Olandria,” he alleged that Nic told him he had “no romantic spark” for her, despite the two admitting they find each other attractive. On the other hand, Ace vouched for his other close friend in the villa, Taylor Williams and Clarke Carraway’s relationship.

As for the friendships he’s kept since filming Love Island, Ace revealed he and Nic are no longer close, but insisted Olandria remains a good friend of his.

Olandria seemingly responded to Ace’s comments on X with a casual, “Chile anyways… my event at Tuskeegee went amazing yesterday.” The post has since been deleted.

Nic also appeared to address the drama by posting on Snapchat after the interview dropped. When asked how his day was going, he replied, “This morning 10/10. Later in the day 4/10.”

Take a look above at Speedy addressing Ace’s remarks about “NicOlandria’s” romance being inauthentic and the couple’s suspected responses.

Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres shuts down “bullshit” retirement rumours

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres has shut down claims he retired from the band after rumours circulated on social media.

  • READ MORE: Bon Jovi talk “joyous” new album and battling health problems: “We’re not dead yet”

Tico is a founding member of classic rock outfit and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with them back in 2018, leading fans to panic when speculation arose that he had exited the band.

Rumours gained traction earlier after the hosts of the Bon Jovi Talk podcast hinted at a possible line-up change, taking to X/Twitter to write: “Wait…. Has Tico retired????” They went on to say that keyboard player David Bryan had made comments suggesting he and Jon Bon Jovi “started when they were 16” and were now the only two core members left.

“If Tico is done, that’s the band done,” their post continued. “Tico is the heart and soul of the band.” On Monday (August 25), the stickman shared a short video message in response, in which he said he was “here to dispel a lot of rumours that I’ve read”.

“People calling me up, saying, ‘Did you retire from music, from the band?’ Well, no. I have no idea how this stuff starts. Musicians don’t retire, especially me. Me and the boys, Jon and everybody, we’re still making music. I mean, the best we’ve ever been.

“All I can tell you is don’t listen to what you read,” he laughed. “It’s most likely bullshit.”

Replying in the comments, Jon Bon Jovi wrote: “God bless Tico and every member of this band get ready for us… we’re ready for you !!!!”

Torres’ video message fell on the same day the band shared news that they are revisiting their 2024 record ‘Forever’ in a new collaborative album that will see them join forces with artists including Bruce Springsteen, Avril Lavigne, Robbie Williams and more.

Titled ‘Forever (Legendary Edition)’, the record also features guest artists like Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Ryan Tedder, the War & Treaty, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, and more. It arrives October 24, and you can pre-order/pre-save here.

It has so far been previewed with Springsteen track ‘Hollow Man’ as well as a new single ‘Red, White & Jersey’, with Jon Bon Jovi describing the new album as, “more than just a collection of collaborations”.

“It is an album borne out of necessity,” he said in a statement, referencing the vocal issues he battled that left him fearing he may never perform live again.

In an interview with NME about ‘Forever’ last year, he shed light on his ongoing recovery from vocal surgery, the chances of an ABBA Voyage-style hologram show, as well as drawing inspiration from the likes of The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift and his ‘Hollow Man’ collaborator Springsteen.

“When we first started out, The Rolling Stones had just turned 40 and we thought they were old then, but they’re still setting the bar to this day. That band are role models, not only to us, but the generation that has come after us,” he said at the time.

“Look at Paul McCartney, he’s 81 and still making records. Bruce Springsteen is doing three-and-a-half-hour concerts at 74 and is still on fucking fire. People don’t want you to be average.”

Robert Earl Keen, Tyler Childers Sing for Texas Flood Relief

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Robert Earl Keen was three songs into his headlining set at his Applause for the Cause benefit last Thursday night, as a crowd of 5,600 exhausted, sweaty, and fulfilled fans hung on his every word. They had been brought here through tragedy, but this was a night of healing at Whitewater Amphitheater, set along the Guadalupe River outside of New Braunfels, Texas.

The event was Keen’s brainchild — a coming together of artists and fans in the same area where flooding on July 4 killed at least 138 people and saw devastation stretching for nearly 30 miles, with all proceeds going to flood relief via the Community Foundation for the Texas Hill Country — and he set up the musical payoff he wanted.

“This has been a day full of surprises,” Keen said from center stage. “But sometimes, there’s a great big surprise!”

Keen and his backing band then launched into “White House Road,” the 2017 Tyler Childers staple that Keen covers frequently.

Keen sang one verse and then gestured to his right, where Childers calmly walked on stage to a microphone. The Texas songwriting icon then stood up, waved to the crowd, and yielded to Childers for the next half hour.

From the wings, Keen smiled and applauded while Childers blistered through a set of signature songs like “Country Squire,” Rustin’ in the Rain,” and “Percheron Mules” before ending with an acoustic version of “Lady May” and ceding the spotlight back to Keen for the grand finale.

The appearance by one of the most in-demand artists in music, with his latest LP Snipe Hunter basking in attention from fans and critics alike, let Keen see his goal of a major benefit show to a successful conclusion. Keen filled out the bill with names like Miranda Lambert, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Ryan Bingham, and Cody Jinks, in large part by texting artists directly and calling in favors in the wake of the tragedy.

“Mr. Keen reached out to me and asked if I’d be willing to come down here to Texas,” Childers told the crowd. “I said, ‘absolutely.’ I was honored that he asked me, and I wasn’t doing anything but hanging out at the house anyhow.”

Editor’s picks

Organizers estimated the concert, along with an auction the previous evening at nearby Gruene Hall — hosted by Keen and with Childers attending — had raised at least $3 million by the end of the night. A slew of sponsors pitched in to offset the cost of producing a high-end event. Arch “Beaver” Aplin, CEO of the Buc-ee’s chain and a presenting sponsor, tells Rolling Stone: “Robert Earl told me he was gonna have a big lineup of artists, and I said, ‘Are all the artists participating volunteering their time?’ He said yes, and I said, ‘Well, I’m all in.’ All these artists are doing it for the right reasons — to raise money after this unspeakable tragedy. That was the sell for me.”

It was neither the first benefit concert, nor the largest — that distinction went to the “Band Together Texas” flood relief concert, co-hosted by Lambert and Parker McCollum, at Austin’s Moody Center earlier in August, which raised at least $8.5 million. But the combination of the Hill Country setting, steps from the same Guadalupe River that flooded Kerrville on July 4, and Keen’s involvement made Applause for the Cause arguably the most significant. As the show played out over nearly 10 hours, artists backstage mingled and caught up with one another.

With the afternoon temperatures nearing 100 degrees, Vincent Neil Emerson opened the day playing on a side stage with a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers” and his ode to his favorite dance hall, “White Horse Saloon.” By midnight, nearly 30 artists had taken turns serenading the Whitewater crowd.

The first hour on the main stage, featuring artists like Kelsey Waldon, Jason Boland, Jamestown Revival, and Sarah Jarosz, ended with Keen’s first appearance. As Terry Allen played “Amarillo Highway,” Keen stepped out to sing a verse of the song he has covered for most of his career. After the song, Allen said, “That’s a song that Robert Earl Keen did not write.”

Keen then gave a welcome address, saying, “Music can relieve our grief, warm our hearts, and bring strangers together in a celebration of life,” before asking fans to join him in “Amazing Grace.”

The main stage sets began in earnest with Lambert, Jon Randall, and Jack Ingram swapping songs, backed by a group of Lone Star State musicians that Keen termed “the all-star house band.” Lambert sent “Tequila Does” out to fans whose judgment may have been compromised in the midsummer heat, while Ingram covered Charlie Robison’s “My Hometown” and dedicated it to the late Texas crooner. Hayes Carll, Radney Foster, and Ray Wylie Hubbard followed with a set of standards that Hubbard capped off with his own “Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother” as the sun set. When Randy Rogers joined the Panhandlers — Cleto Cordero, Josh Abbott, and William Clark Green — Cordero, the frontman of Flatland Cavalry, said, “It feels like I’m on stage with my heroes.”

The last song swap featured Bingham, Jamey Johnson, and Cody Jinks, who led off by telling the crowd, “I still find it as cool as you do that they put me with these two guys up here.” The high point was a series of extended ovations for Bingham’s “Bread and Water,” Johnson’s “In Color,” and Jinks’ “Hippies and Cowboys.”

On the heels of a sold-out Boys From Oklahoma show in Waco, Texas, the weekend prior, and on the day the band announced an April date at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Cross Canadian Ragweed took the stage ahead of Keen and Childers. The eight-song set featured Boland sitting in on “17” and a pair of Todd Snider covers, “I Believe You” and “Late Last Night.” Frontman Cody Canada dedicated the song “Boys from Oklahoma,” their longtime homage to marijuana, to Texas governor Greg Abbott, and sang the line “Get your shit together, Texas, and legalize the weed.”

Canada was openly appreciative of the lineup that Keen put together, remarking from the stage that the backstage vibe was that of a family reunion. Several artists on the bill spent their dues-paying days in New Braunfels and the surrounding Hill Country before their careers took off.

“If you only knew the hell that Jason Boland and Ryan Bingham and I used to raise up the road at River Road Ice House,” Canada deadpanned, before making a slight correction. “If I only knew the hell we raised.”

After Ragweed cleared out, Keen walked to a chair at center stage. The “all-star house band” consisted largely of Keen’s touring outfit, though the legendary producer Lloyd Maines sat in on steel guitar. So, when they kicked off the final set with “Feelin’ Good Again,” it felt like a classic Keen performance.

Keen was acutely aware that Childers’ half-hour performance stood to drain the crowd, so he saved his biggest anthems for the end of the show. Before he left the stage, Childers made a point to embrace Keen, who then went directly into “Dreadful Selfish Crime.” That was followed by “The Road Goes on Forever,” which has yet to be upstaged by any artist — Childers, Ragweed, or otherwise.

“This is overwhelming for me,” Keen told the crowd after the song. “But as far as a group of people, you’ve done it man. Thank you so much.”

Keen closed the evening by bringing Canada on stage to sing “My Hometown” as a duet — the second time the song was featured during the benefit — as an extended drone display lit up the sky above the stage.

Backstage moments later, with the crowd still filing out and workers firing up forklifts to clear equipment, Childers sought out Keen for a proper goodbye. It was Keen who got the first words in.
