Operation Ivy: Energy Album Review

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this year, I was a staff writer on Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney. For 12 weeks, our show aired live on Netflix at 7 p.m. PT. In the afternoon on show days, we’d do a dress rehearsal. Writers would sit in for the celebrity guests, the studio audience was empty, but we had live callers, even though the rehearsal would never air. The topic for our fifth episode was “Getting Fired,” and at the dress rehearsal, Mulaney took a couple phone calls in the first interview segment. One caller identified himself as “Jesse from Los Angeles.” There was an echo on his call. Mulaney debated hanging up but gave him a chance. Jesse told a story about how he worked as a prep cook in his 20s. He was terrible at it, and yet, his boss wouldn’t fire him.

“Jesse, why couldn’t you get fired from that job?” Mulaney asked.

“Because my boss was a fan of my band,” Jesse said.

“What was your band called?” Mulaney said.

“The band was Operation Ivy, the punk band,” Jesse said.

Mulaney’s jaw dropped. “Oh my god, you were in Operation Ivy? That’s fuckin’ sick.”

I was just offstage watching this exchange, dumbstruck. Jesse Michaels called into our dress rehearsal? How did he even get the phone number? It was so unexpected. Michaels was self-effacing and charming while talking to Mulaney, a couple writers, and the show’s announcer, Richard Kind (who, in that episode, was in character as Gene Simmons because he got hit on the head with a Kiss LP). After a few minutes of conversation, Mulaney said, “I gotta hang up on you, Jesse, but Operation Ivy rules.”

After the rehearsal, the writers and producers convened to receive notes from Netflix. One of the suits sent a note that said, “You gotta get the Op Ivy guy to call back for the live show. That was incredible.” Mulaney considered the note for a beat, but waved it off. When spontaneous magic strikes in a dress rehearsal, it can be a fool’s errand to try and recreate that moment on live TV.

Michaels’ phone call to Mulaney’s dress rehearsal gave me a brief but true Op Ivy experience. Like the band, that phone call was only experienced by a handful of people. It was a blink-or-you’ll-miss-it moment that only happened once, and would never be replicated.

Like an atom being split by nuclear fission, Op Ivy was a ball of fire blazing at punk clubs and backyard shows that extinguished before the world could catch on. All that’s left behind is Energy. It’s a remarkable document of a band that had a scene in the palm of its hand. You had to have been there.

Eddie Vedder played a slew of covers at this year’s edition of Ohana Music Festival, taking on tracks by George Harrison, Led Zeppelin, DEVO and more – check out footage below.

The Pearl Jam frontman has been running his own California-based festival since 2016, and was joined by his backing band, The Earthlings, to headline the festival’s first night.

It marked the first time in two years that he and his Earthlings bandmates – who include The Frames‘ Glen Hansard, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former RHCP guitarist (and current Pearl Jam touring member) Josh Klinghoffer, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney and guitarist Andrew Watt – have performed onstage together.

To mark the occasion, they delivered a cover-heavy set alongside some Pearl Jam classics, kicking off Friday night’s (September 26) gig with a cover of DEVO’s ‘Gut Feeling’ before launching into Pearl Jam’s ‘Corduroy’.

After storming through tracks like ‘Setting Forth’ and ‘No Ceiling’, both played for the first time in years, they covered The Who’s ‘I’m One’ and jammed to the intro of Led Zeppelin’s ‘The Song Remains the Same’ ahead of playing ‘Rearviewmirror’.

Eddie Vedder at Ohana Festival 2025 played:

‘Gut Feeling’ (DEVO cover)
‘Corduroy’ (Pearl Jam song)
‘I’ll Be Waiting’
‘Long Way’
‘The Dark’
‘Setting Forth’ (first time since 2017)
‘Far Behind’
‘No Ceiling’ (first time since 2019)
‘Brother the Cloud
‘I’m One’ (The Who cover)
‘Watch Outside’ (Mono Men cover)
‘Lukin’ (Pearl Jam song)
‘Chad-O’
‘Rose of Jericho’
‘Fallout Today’
‘Save It For Later’ (The Beat cover)
‘The Song Remains the Same’ (Led Zeppelin cover)
‘Rearviewmirror’ (Pearl Jam song)
‘Isn’t It A Pity’ (George Harrison cover)
‘Porch’
‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ (Neil Young cover)

Other covers of the night included The Beat’s ‘Save It For Later’, Mono Men’s ‘Watch Outside’ and George Harrison‘s 1970 track ‘Isn’t It A Pity’, with Vedder rounding things off with Neil Young’s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’, a longtime favourite of Vedder’s, which saw Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones and saxophonist King join him on stage.

As for Pearl Jam, they embarked on a US tour in support of their latest album, ‘Dark Matter’. The record scored a four-star review from NME last year, with Liberty Dunworth writing: “For those longing for the charismatic songwriting that first put the band on the map over three decades ago, ‘Dark Matter’ will come as a pleasant surprise.”

“Not only does it showcase Pearl Jam reclaiming the charm that first made them a force to be reckoned with back in 1991, it comes alongside some of their most impressive musicianship yet, as well as a determination to take risks after years of playing it safe.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco Are Married

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco Are Married

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

That’s Mrs. Blanco to you. Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco tied the knot in a private ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 27. They exchanged vows in California in front of their friends and family.

Gomez shared photos from their wedding, captioning a carousel of pictures “9.27.25.”

The couple got engaged in December 2024 after more than a year of dating. The singer announced the news, “forever begins now..”

The couple worked together on Gomez’s 2015 hit song “Same Old Love” and “I Can’t Get Enough” (which also featured Tainy and J Balvin) in 2019, before confirming their relationship in December 2023. She later noted that she began dating the music producer six months prior. In March 2025, they released their collaborative album, I Said I Love You First.

While speaking about Blanco during an appearance on Apple Music 1, Gomez described their relationship as “the safest” she’s ever felt.

“I think it’s just really important to meet someone that respects you,” she said. “I’d have to say, overall, it’s the safest that I feel, and it’s been really lovely, and I’ve only grown through it, so it’s awesome.”

But when it came to wedding planning, the couple was the first to admit that they were slow to get started. Earlier this year, Blanco told Rolling Stone that Gomez “planned a new wedding in her head” every day after they got engaged, but their main focus at the time was their album, I Said I Love You First.

Trending Stories

“We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’-type of people. We’re still not over this moment. Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring,” he said. Gomez added, “Also, I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world. That’s my main focus right now, at least.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco have tied the knot. The couple got married on Saturday (Sept. 27) in California, with Gomez confirming the happy news with a same-day look at some romantic wedding photos and video clips.

The pop star and Only Murders in the Building actress posted a sweet wedding album on Instagram Saturday evening, crediting photographer/artist Petra Collins by tagging her on the images. (Petra also tagged her sister Anna Collins in an Instagram Story sharing footage from the wedding.)

The pictures focus on the bride and groom embracing, and they share a glimpse at wedding-day details — like Gomez’s custom halter-style dress by Ralph Lauren, her bridal bouquet, and the celebration’s private estate setting.

A short video captures an intimate moment in which Gomez fixes Blanco’s bowtie and puts her hands on his face, just before the lovebirds share a sweet kiss.

Gomez wrote a simple, classy caption to commemorate their wedding day: “9.27.25.” She surrounded the date with white heart emojis.

“my wife in real life,” Blanco commented on her post.

Ahead of their Sept. 27 nuptials, Gomez enjoyed a beachside bachelorette party with a group of girlfriends in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The newlyweds, who released the album I Said I Love You First together in March, first announced they were engaged in December 2024.

They’d been romantically for about a year prior, but their professional relationship began years earlier, with the singer and producer collaborating on the 2019 track “I Can’t Get Enough” (with Tainy and J Balvin) and 2023’s “Single Soon.”

I Said I Love You First debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Apr. 5; though it didn’t land at the top of the chart, it did deliver Gomez’s best-ever debut numbers, with 120,000 units moved in its first week according to Luminate.

Lola Young Collapses Mid-Set at All Things Go NYC Festival

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Lola Young collapsed mid-performance during her set at All Things Go’s New York festival on Saturday night. According to Billboard, the singer was five songs into her set when she suddenly fell, prompting her bandmates, team, and security to rush to her aid and escort her offstage. The remainder of her set was canceled.

Later, Young reassured fans with an Instagram update, writing: “Doing okay now. Thank you for all of your support.”

The incident came just one day after Young pulled out of a scheduled appearance at Audacy’s We Can Survive concert at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, citing a “sensitive matter.” In a post on Instagram, her manager Nick Shymansky explained: “Lola is very open about her mental health and there are very occasionally days where myself and my team have to take protective measures to keep her safe. She is an incredible person and always takes her fans, career, and performances seriously. I can only send huge apologies for the inconvenience caused.”

Before her collapse on Saturday, Young addressed the crowd directly about her decision to perform despite recent struggles. “Today I woke up and I made the decision to come here,” she told the audience. “I wanted to perform, and I didn’t want to wallow in my sadness. Sometimes life can throw you lemons and you just gotta motherfucking make lemonade… I really appreciate everyone who’s here tonight.”

Quinta Brunson And Kevin Anik Reach Divorce Settlement

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Abbott Elementary star and creator Quinta Brunson and her estranged husband, Kevin Anik, have reportedly reached an agreement in their pending divorce. According to TMZ, Brunson filed documents that claim she and Anik have a written, mutual agreement on how to divide their property. The next step is for a judge to sign off on the settlement to finalize the divorce.

The Philadelphia native initially filed to legally dissolve her marriage in March. According to court documents, “irreconcilable differences” was cited as the cause of their split, and they “entered into a postnuptial agreement which governs the disposition of their property, and requested that each party cover their own attorney’s fees.

Brunson and Anik were wed in October 2021; however, the Emmy Award winner kept her life private. Most fans were not aware of her relationship until her 2022 acceptance speech.

“Even if you don’t give a lot, people want whatever they can get, and will take whatever they can get,” she explained to Bustle in June. “I remember seeing people be like, ‘She announced her divorce.’ I didn’t announce anything. I think people have this idea that people in the public eye want the public to know their every move. None of us do. I promise you.”

“No one wants [everyone] to know when you buy a house, when you move, when a major change happens in your personal life — it’s just that that’s public record information,” she continued. “I hate all of it.”

In the same interview, the 35-year-old also exclaimed, “Abbott has been so successful, and I want to use that success to get other people’s projects off the ground,” about her career future.

The Futureheads announce new Christmas album and tour

The Futureheads announce new Christmas album and tour

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

The Futureheads have announced details of a new festive album ‘Christmas’ and an accompanying UK tour.

The Sunderland indie band will release their first ever holidays-themed album on November 21. It will be comprised largely of reinterpretations of yuletide classics, as well as two original compositions, and you can pre-order it here.

A brand new song ‘The Coldest Winter In 100 Years’ will appear on the record, as will the band’s 2010 release ‘Christmas Was Better In The 80s’, the first festive song the band ever released.

‘Christmas’ has been arranged, recorded and produced by the band themselves and also includes covers of favourites such as ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’, Pretenders‘ ‘2000 Miles’, Jona Lewie’s ‘Stop The Cavalry’ and Paul McCartney‘s ‘Wonderful Christmastime’.

To coincide with the album’s release, the band will also play four exclusive shows in December, including two hometown shows at Sunderland’s The Fire Station, and shows in Glasgow and EartH in London.

Tickets for the shows go on sale on Monday (September 29) at 10am and you will be able to find yours here.

The Futureheads will play:

DECEMBER 2025
8 – Glasgow, Oran Mor
19 – Sunderland, The Fire Station
20 – Sunderland, The Fire Station
22 – London, EartH Theatre

The band have said: “We are proud to have self-produced this collection of recordings. We are also proud and grateful to be still making music together after all these years and this album is a celebration of that. We love being in this band and when in good spirits, we make a special sound.”

Quipping about recording the songs during a summer heatwave, they added: “If you’re going to make a Christmas album, and want it done and dusted (or should that be polished) in time to release during the appropriate season, then sweaty summer sessions are a must! And oh boy, did we have some sweaty ones.”

‘Christmas’ tracklist:

  1. ‘Carol Of The Bells’
  2. ‘Stop The Cavalry’
  3. ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’
  4. ‘What’s This?’
  5. ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’
  6. ‘The Twelve Days Of Christmas’
  7. ‘Wonderful Christmastime’
  8. ‘2000 Miles’
  9. ‘The Coldest Winter For A Hundred Years’
  10. ‘Christmas Was Better In The 80s’

Elsewhere, the band’s frontman Barry Hyde released a solo album ‘Miners’ Ballads’ in March via Sirenspire Records, a concept record that explored the coal mining heritage of the North East of England.

In other news, Hyde recently spoke to NME about his experience with The Futureheads opening for The Killers on the 2005 NME Awards tour, which also included Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs.

“Retrospectively, it was an exciting time for British indie music, and I would love there to be a positive nostalgia trip for the Noughties. Looking back, we were so young. Our drummer was only 16 and wasn’t even legally allowed in the venues for our first tours of America.”

Hyde also recalled the 2005 NME Awards ceremony, which marked the end of the tour. “That was a heavy-duty Noughties night! I was gutted because I went up to Simon Pegg at the bar and told him how much I loved his sitcom Spaced, and he wasn’t very friendly,” he said. “I ended up winning the award that nobody wants – when NME gave me The Drunkest Person of the Night award!”

Lola Young Collapses Onstage During All Things Go Fest Performance

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Lola Young collapsed onstage while performing at All Things Go in New York City on Saturday. The singer suffered a medical emergency while singing “Conceited” and was carried offstage by a medical team.

Remi Wolf later appeared onstage, where she addressed the crowd, stating, “That was really f—— scary.” She added, “My friend Lola is backstage, and she is okay.” The crowd cheered in support.

A few hours later, Young uploaded an Instagram story where she wrote, “For anyone who saw my set at all things go today, i am doing okay now. Thank you for all of your support Lola xxx.”

Earlier in the set, Young spoke about how she “had a tricky couple of days,” adding: “Sometimes life can really make you feel like you can’t continue, but you know what, today I woke up and I made the decision to come here, and I wanted to be cool … and sometimes life can throw you lemons, and you just gotta make lemonade.”

A rep for Young did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.

The incident came one day after Young pulled out of Audacy’s We Can Survive concert in Newark, New Jersey, on Friday night. Hours before the start of the charity show, Young’s manager Nick Shymansky revealed on Young’s Instagram story that he advised her not to perform as a “protective measure to keep her safe.”

“Unfortunately due to a sensitive matter I have advised Lola Young to pull out of performing at Audacy – We Can Survive @ Prudential [Center] this evening,” Shymansky wrote. “Lola is very open about her mental health and there are very occasionally days when myself and my team have to take protective measures to keep her safe.”

Shymansky ended the statement by adding, “She is an incredible person and always takes her fans, career and performances seriously. I can only send huge apologies for the inconvenience caused.”

A spokesperson for Audacy shared their support for the singer in a statement to Rolling Stone: “We support Lola and her mental health and wish her the very best. We thank fans for their understanding.”

Young has described her battles with mental health in the past. “It’s very important that I’ve been open about it because it’s given the leeway for other people to be open about it and the drive for other people to reach out and say how much it has helped them,” she told Rolling Stone, citing occasional episodes that have taken place in front of collaborators, and how writing through them has resulted in some of her most raw work to date.

Friday’s canceled show comes just a week after the singer released her new LP,  I’m Only F**king Myself. Young had a breakout hit with the 2024 track “Messy,” and previously released the 2023 album My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely and the 2024 album This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway.
