What is the secret to longevity and a healthier life? The Pew Research Centre recently interviewed 2,582 Americans aged 65 and older to seek their advice on ageing. They underlined the importance of a nutritious diet, thoughtful financial decisions, and social activities for a balanced and long life.

Advice on ageing from Americans aged 65 and older

“Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to younger people to help them prepare for getting older?” the Pew Research Centre asked the 2,582 Americans aged 65 and older whom they interviewed.

In a nutshell, the senior citizens emphasized seven themes: Health, finances, mindset/outlook on life, relationships, activities, work, and faith/religion.

Approximately half of older Americans (49 percent) gave health-related advice, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising frequently, and attending doctors’ appointments. Compared with elderly males, older women were more likely to give health advice (52 percent vs. 46 percent), per the study.

37 percent of the group stressed the importance of saving money and financial strategies. Approximately 25 percent of older Americans reported having a certain perspective on life, suggesting that younger people should live with thankfulness, enjoy life, and treasure every moment. This topic also included several general life lessons, such as staying loyal to oneself, being self-sufficient, and lending a hand to others.

Building a family and spending time with loved ones, as well as having good friends and a busy social life, were highlighted by 11 percent. And while 8 percent spoke about working hard, 7 percent offered advice related to religion. Another 8 percent said one should have hobbies, interests, and volunteer work.

Go for walks and eat healthy

Centenarians interviewed by CNBC highlighted the need for eating mostly plant-based diets of whole foods like fruits and vegetables. The importance of walking and exercising your body frequently for longevity was also noted by many healthy persons over 90.

“I try to walk every day, without excuse,” Malcom Idelson, 94, told CNBC in 2023. “I look forward to it. I’m often a little down and I say, ‘Let me get out and walk,’ and I feel so much better,” he added.

Gastroenterologist suggests 6 science-backed snacks that can fight colon cancer: ‘Watermelon with lime to…’

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the third most common cancer globally, with more than 1.9 million new cases and more than 930,000 deaths globally in 2020, according to the World Health Organisation. It accounts for approximately 10% of all cancer cases and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

Therefore, educating oneself about this cancer is a need of the hour, so that you can protect your colon and opt for a healthy lifestyle. In a November 8 Instagram post, Dr Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist and popular health influencer known as @thestomachdoc on social media, listed 6 snacks you can include in your daily diet to protect yourself from colon cancer.

6 snacks to fight colon cancer

Sharing the list of 6 snack combinations to fight colon cancer, Dr Salhab noted, “These foods had some of the strongest effects in lowering colon cancer risk.”

Additionally, he pointed out that these recommendations are science-backed, as some are included in a May 2023 meta-analysis: “Different types of fruit intake and colorectal cancer risk,” published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Here are the 6 snacks Dr Salhab recommended:

1. Watermelon with lime

The first snack the gastroenterologist suggested in the video is eating watermelon with lime. According to him, the combination contains lycopene and vitamin C, which helps reduce the risk of colon cancer.

2. Walnuts with yoghurt

Next, he suggested having a handful of walnuts with some yoghurt. It contains omega-3 and probiotics, which can be beneficial for your colon health.

3. Avocado with salsa

The gastroenterologist recommended having avocado with salsa. In the video, he can be seen enjoying this combination on a toasted slice of bread. According to him, avocados and salsa are rich in fibre and prebiotics, which help boost immune cells in the colon.

4. Blueberry and chia seeds

Dr Salhab suggested making a blueberry chia pudding with blueberries and chia seeds. They have anthocyanins and soluble fibre, which nourish protective bacteria present in the colon.

5. Apples and cinnamon

Take a few slices of apple and sprinkle them with cinnamon. This snack contains pectin fibre and polyphenols, which produce more butyrate for anti-inflammatory effects.

6. Kiwi with honey yoghurt

Lastly, Dr Salhab recommended having kiwi with some yoghurt drizzled with honey, as the fibre present in kiwi can repair DNA damage in the colon.

Does coffee make you rush to the loo? Florida gastroenterologist explains why drinking coffee stimulates bowel movements

Do you need to drink coffee in the morning to stimulate bowel movements? Dr Salhab explains the science behind the connection.

We’ve all experienced it: that urgent need to dash to the bathroom right after your morning coffee – or the dread of drinking coffee when you’re out and about. While it might feel like a quirky coincidence, there’s actually a scientific explanation behind it.

Dr Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist and health content creator from Florida, specialising in digestion, liver, pancreas and nutrition, is explaining what makes you want to run to the loo after drinking coffee. In an Instagram video posted on November 8, the gastroenterologist highlights the role of coffee in stimulating bowel movements and shares three gentler alternatives that won’t leave you running to the loo.

Why does coffee make you need to poop?

Dr Salhab states, “Does coffee make you have to go poop? If it does, you’re not alone. In fact, 30 to 40 percent of people who drink coffee regularly report that coffee has to make them go to the bathroom in the morning.”

He mentions that this happens for a few reasons. He explains, “First is the caffeine content. Caffeine can stimulate movement of the colon within four minutes of ingesting it. Coffee also stimulates contraction of your gallbladder to pump digestive enzymes and bile. And this also stimulates your gastrointestinal tract to start moving.”

The gastroenterologist adds that coffee is typically served warm, and consuming warm beverages can naturally stimulate bowel movements – warm water also works the same way. He continues, “Also, the antioxidants within coffee have been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria within the gut and these beneficial bacteria can also influence how often we use the restroom.”

Gentler alternatives

Dr Salhab outlines three effective ways to manage that sudden urge to run to the loo after drinking coffee.

  1. You can opt for beverages with lower caffeine content – such as green tea – or simply cut down your usual coffee intake to reduce its laxative effect.
  2. Switching to a cold brew or iced coffee also helps.
  3. If that doesn’t work, you can just switch to a decaf version, which still has plenty of antioxidants and health benefits, minus the sudden urge to rush to the bathroom.

Doctor explains how smoking impacts the body and what happens when you quit: ‘Within 2 to 12 weeks, circulation…’

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

That satisfying drag during a work break might feel like a moment of calm, but every puff silently harms your lungs. Most people know smoking damages the body – but what many don’t realise is how quickly it begins to heal once you stop. The recovery starts almost instantly, with your lungs and circulation showing signs of repair within weeks.

Also Read | Faridabad pulmonologist shares how to reverse lung damage from air pollution and smoking: ‘Brisk walking or exercise…’

Dr Kunal Sood, an anesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine physician, has outlined how smoking impacts the body – and the remarkable changes that begin once you quit. In an Instagram video posted on November 7, the physician highlights, “Over time, smoking can increase the risk of lung disease, heart problems, and nicotine addiction. Make sure you take the appropriate steps to quit smoking, and seek professional help if needed.”

What happens to your body when you smoke?

Dr Sood explains that smoking doesn’t just damage the lungs – it gradually stiffens them, reducing their ability to expand and function efficiently. He explains, “Tar plus over 7,000 chemicals weaken the cilia that clear your airways. That leads to chronic cough, mucus plugs, chronic bronchitis, emphysema or COPD, and a much higher risk of lung cancer.”

The physician adds that smoking weakens the lungs’ immune defences, making them more prone to infections, slower recovery, and reduced exercise capacity.

What happens when you quit?

Dr Sood says the good news is that the moment you quit smoking, your body begins repairing itself almost immediately. He elaborates, “Within two to 12 weeks, circulation and lung function improve. After 1 year, heart disease risk drops by about 50% and by 10 years, lung cancer risk is about half that of a continuing smoker.”

He emphasises that quitting entirely is the single most powerful step you can take to protect and restore your health. In addition to quitting, he recommends getting support, building cardio and practising daily breathing exercises. The physician adds, “For lung wellness, alongside quitting, it’s also a great option to improve your gut lung axis. A healthier gut can help support balanced inflammation and respiratory health.”

Experts weigh in on the hidden health impact of Delhi air pollution, beyond lungs: Skin, hair, bones, and even fertility

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Every winter, as a dense grey haze blankets Delhi, the familiar conversations around pollution return. But the crisis today goes far beyond coughing fits and watery eyes – it’s silently disrupting deeper aspects of health, from hormonal balance and fertility to skin, hair, and even bone strength. Doctors across specialities are reporting a steady surge in pollution-related ailments among Delhiites.

Experts advise reducing exposure and wearing masks as temporary solutions to protect yourself from pollution.(Hindustan Times)

HT Lifestyle spoke to three specialists for their insights on how Delhi’s toxic air is taking a toll not just on the lungs but also on the skin, hair, fertility, and bone health. The experts include Dr Karuna Malhotra – founder, cosmetologist, and aesthetic physician at Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, Rajouri Garden; Dr Shobha Gupta – medical director and IVF expert at Mother’s Lap IVF Centre, Pitampura; and Dr Akhilesh Rathi – director of joint replacement, orthopaedics, and sports injury at Sri Action Balaji Hospital, Paschim Vihar, and founder of Rathi Orthopaedic and Spine Clinic, Dwarka.

Skin and hair

As the body’s outermost barrier and first line of defence, the skin and hair bear the brunt of toxic air exposure – taking some of the harshest hits from Delhi’s rising pollution levels. Dr Malhotra explains, “Air pollution in Delhi is a cocktail of particulate matter, industrial chemicals, and toxins. These particles are so tiny that they penetrate the skin barrier, triggering inflammation, pigmentation, dullness, early wrinkles, and stubborn acne flare-ups.”

Pollution particles trigger the production of free radicals that break down collagen, causing the skin to age faster. The cosmetologist also highlights that dermatology clinics across the city are reporting a surge in cases of contact dermatitis and eczema during peak pollution months.

Hair is just as vulnerable – pollutants settle on the scalp, clog follicles, weaken the roots, and interfere with the natural hair growth cycle. Dr Malhotra points out, “Over the past few years, I’ve seen a sharp rise in brittle hair, excessive hair fall, and itchy, flaky scalp conditions every time pollution peaks.” She stresses the need for double cleansing and antioxidant-rich skincare routines during this season.

Pregnant women and fertility

A growing yet often overlooked consequence of air pollution is its harmful impact on reproductive health – affecting fertility, hormonal balance, and even pregnancy outcomes. According to Dr Gupta, “Long-term exposure to toxic air increases oxidative stress in the body. This can disturb hormonal function in women, reduce egg quality, and in pregnant women, raise the risk of complications such as low-birth-weight babies and preterm deliveries.”

The gynaecologist explains that microscopic pollutants can enter the bloodstream and even cross the placental barrier. Expecting mothers with pre-existing respiratory conditions often experience heightened breathlessness, fatigue, and disrupted sleep during periods of severe pollution.

Men aren’t spared either – they are affected equally. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can drastically plummet sperm count and motility. Dr Gupta notes, “Among couples trying to conceive, we are increasingly seeing pollution-linked decreases in sperm health. This is now an emerging factor in infertility, especially in urban settings like Delhi.”

Bone health

While the effects of pollution on the skin and lungs are well recognised, its impact on bone health remains surprisingly underreported. According to Dr Rathi, “Air pollution interferes with how the body processes calcium and Vitamin D. Because people avoid going outdoors and sunlight is blocked by smog, Vitamin D deficiency becomes almost universal in winters.”

The orthopaedician points out that vitamin D deficiency weakens bones, raises the risk of fractures, and exacerbates conditions like osteoporosis. Moreover, pollutants can indirectly trigger inflammation in the body, intensifying joint pain – particularly among older adults.

Dr Rathi adds, “Many patients complain of stiffness, knee pain, and chronic fatigue during the pollution season. These are not just age-related changes; pollution is a key contributing factor.”

A call for awareness and collective action

Dr Malhotra notes, “Pollution may be external, but its impact is deeply internal. Awareness and proactive care can prevent long-term damage.” While masks, air purifiers, and lifestyle tweaks can provide short-term relief, experts emphasise that meaningful change requires systemic, long-term solutions. Until then, individuals must take proactive steps to safeguard their health. Doctors recommend adopting antioxidant-rich diets, using air purifiers indoors, following regular detoxifying skincare routines, supplementing with vitamin D and omega-3s, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak smog hours.

Delhi’s pollution crisis has evolved from an environmental concern into a full-blown public health emergency. Toxic air is silently damaging everything from skin and hair to hormonal balance, fertility, and bone strength. What makes it even more alarming is its invisibility – few connect everyday issues like fatigue, joint pain, or hair fall to pollution. As the city battles its annual smog surge, experts urge citizens to protect themselves while pushing for systemic change – because clean air isn’t a privilege, it’s a fundamental right.

Fortis gastroenterologist shares the best breakfast for weight loss: ‘Keeps you feeling full throughout the day’

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as what you eat replenishes your body and provides nutrients to kickstart the day. What you eat also sets the tone for the day you will have. A healthy breakfast provides energy, whereas an unhealthy one leads to energy crashes.

Eating this breakfast will help drop your hunger, reduce cravings, and overall calorie intake goes down. (Freepik)

But what if you are trying to lose weight? What could be the best breakfast in such a scenario? Dr Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj, with over 10 years of experience, shared the best breakfast option for when you are trying to shed kilos. Let’s find out.

What is the best breakfast for weight loss?

Dr Vatsya, in a post titled, ‘Best breakfast for weight loss’, revealed a simple, fibre-rich meal that can help you feel satiated throughout the day. According to the gastroenterologist, the perfect weight-loss breakfast meal is curd with chia seeds or basil seeds. “Simple, tasty, and genuinely effective for fat loss,” he wrote. Here’s why:

  • Curd gives probiotics for a healthier gut, and seeds add fibre that keeps you full longer.
  • Your hunger levels drop, cravings decrease, and overall calorie intake decreases.

Explaining further, Dr Vatsya said, “If you have trouble with weight loss and a problem with feeling hungry, you should consume chia seeds or basil seeds with curd.”

Why should you have chia or basil seeds with curd?

He stressed that, firstly, after consuming chia or basil seeds with curd in the morning, you will notice a difference in your life from the very first meal because they provide you with probiotics.

Furthermore, highlighting how these seeds help keep one full longer, Dr Vatsya explained, “Chia seeds provide you with fibre in a very condensed form, which keeps you feeling full throughout the day.” This, in turn, leads to a decrease in your daily calorie intake.

Lastly, the gastroenterologist suggested trying this breakfast for thirty days. “You will genuinely see that you stay full for at least four hours. You might stop eating the parathas you used to have for breakfast,” he added.

Nearly $1000 for a cup: Julith café in Dubai is selling the world’s most expensive coffee

A Dubai-based café is making sure that its customers pay an exorbitant amount to purchase a cup of coffee. The Julith café is selling a cup of rare coffee for nearly $1,000.

The Independent reported that the café is offering the beverage that could win the title of the “world’s most expensive cup”. It is being sold for 3,600 dirhams or about $980. What sets this apart is the Nido 7 variety of Geisha beans, a rare and premium strain grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Bare in western Panama.

“The wait is finally over. The world’s most celebrated and highest graded coffee of all time has arrived at Julith,” Serkan Sagsoz, co-founder of the Julith café with the pricey offering, said in a Facebook video.

Future plans

Placed in an industrial neighbourhood that has turned out to be a hotspot for coffee lovers, Julith plans to serve “around 400 cups” of the precious beverage, Sagsoz told AFP.

“We felt Dubai was the perfect place for our investment. There are white floral notes like jasmine, citrus flavours like orange and bergamot and a hint of apricot and peach,” Sagsoz stated.

“It’s like honey, delicate and sweet,” added Sagsoz, who had previously run a café in Turkey.

Guinness World Record

According to AFP, Dubai last month marked a Guinness record for the most expensive cup of coffee across the globe. This happened when Roasters started offering a beverage for a whopping 2,500 dirhams.

The beans were purchased by the Julith café through an auction in Panama. Interestingly, the auction witnessed a neck-to-neck battle, which went on for several hours, drawing hundreds of bids.

At last, Julith ended up paying the highest price for coffee, AFP added.

In a press release, the café stated that it paid roughly 2.2 million dirhams ($600,000) for 20 kgs of the coffee beans.

Chiropractor reveals which 2 sleeping positions harm your spine: ‘If you sleep on your stomach…’

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Everyone has their go-to sleeping position, the one that instantly feels comfy. But here’s the catch: not all comfy sleeping positions are healthy for your spine. Whether it is your posture or spinal alignment, all come under major risks.

ALSO READ: Orthopaedic surgeon shares 5 tips to protect spine if you have a desk job: Don’t sit cross-legged, get up every 45 min

To understand which sleep positions one should avoid, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Rajneesh Kant, chiropractor, osteopathic and spine alignment specialist at Back To Nature Spine Clinic. He advised that one should be careful of their sleeping position, otherwise the spine bears the brunt of it.

“The way you sleep determines how well your spine rests and recovers. Your body repairs muscles, ligaments, and joints while you sleep, but if your sleeping posture puts uneven pressure on the spine, it may disturb the natural alignment of your vertebrae and strain your nerves,” the chiropractor described the value of sleep and how it’s essential for your spine’s rest and recovery.

Further, if one continues to sleep in poor posture for longer periods, Dr Kant warned that it may not only cause temporary morning stiffness, but also, in the long run, result in chronic back and neck pain and even a posture imbalance.

Which sleeping positions to avoid?

Be cautious of these sleep positions. (Picture credit: Made with Gemini AI)
Be cautious of these sleep positions. (Picture credit: Made with Gemini AI)

1. Sleeping on the stomach

The first posture that Dr Kant flagged was sleeping on the stomach. He cautioned that despite the initial comfort, it exerts a lot of strain on the neck muscles.

“One of the most common bad sleep positions is sleeping on your stomach. It might feel comfortable initially, but this makes you have to twist your neck to one side for an extended period,” he explained. “That can strain the neck muscles and compress nerves that run down the cervical spine.”

Why is this seemingly cosy position bad? As per Dr Kant, this position itself is ‘unnatural.’ Elaborating why it may not be natural, the chiropractor added, “If you sleep on your stomach, the lower back will arch in an unnatural direction, putting undue stress on the lumbar region. Many people who sleep in such a position develop stiffness in the neck and lower back, or even tingling in the arms due to irritation of nerves.”

2. Sleeping curled up

After a long day, curling up in bed feels super comfortable, but Dr Kant noted that the fetal posture may put pressure on your back, creating spine-related problems later on.

“Many tuck their knees tightly to their chest, thinking it’s cosy, but such a position rounds the spine too much,” the chiropractor said, highlighting the rounded spine to be one of the major risks.

Turns out, when you are curled up tightly, other functions and body parts are also under pressure. Dr Kant warned, “It limits deep breathing, tightens hip flexors, and over-stretches the back muscles. This may, over time, decrease flexibility and lead to chronic mid-back pain.”

So what is the best sleeping position? What is that one marker that tells you that your sleeping position is correct? According to Dr Kant, the best sleeping position is the one that maintains the spine’s natural curve, keeping it properly aligned throughout the night.

“The best sleeping posture is one that maintains the spine’s natural curve, either by lying on your back with a small pillow tucked under the knees or by lying on your side with a supportive pillow between the legs,” he described.

Now that your spine is aligned, according to the chiropractor, your body weight isn’t concentrated on one spot like the shoulders, hips or lower back; instead, it is evenly spread across. This prevents any kind of strain or compression. You are likely to get up refreshed and feeling less sore.

Dr Kant further reiterated the importance of maintaining a healthy sleeping posing. It is as important as sitting or standing posture during the day. A good sleeping position is also responsible for energy levels and overall well-being.
