Ian Thornley on Big Wreck’s new album and 30 years in the music business – National

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Ian Thornley has been leading Big Wreck on and off (mostly on) for more than 30 years now. Founded in Boston by some Berklee College of Music students in 1992, Thornley brought the band back to Toronto and had an excellent run that stretched from 1997 to 2o03. Then came a breakup, a solo career with three more albums, and finally a reunion in 2010, which resulted in five more albums. A sixth, The Rest of the Story, is coming to stores on Oct. 24.

I had a chance to speak with Thornley from his home studio.

Alan Cross: You’re now more than 30 years into a full-time music career. Did you ever imagine this would be the case?

Ian Thornley: Well, I didn’t imagine it wouldn’t be the case, but I never thought that far ahead, to be honest with you. I never thought I’d still be grinding 30 years in. I didn’t think it would still be fistfights in the mud to scratch out a living. If I had thought of it back then, I would have thought I’d be moving on to producing other people and doing other projects — music for film, or something like that.

Going on the road now is a little more difficult each year, and staying out for extended periods of time. We have a little guy at home now, and my daughter has grown. It gets harder being away from home, and sleeping on a bus is difficult. But I still adore music. I’m still obsessed with it. And I’m trying to get better at it. Any way I can keep practising music and keep doing it for a living, I’m gonna do it.

AC: The first Big Wreck album (In Loving Memory Of…) came out in 1997, right at the tail-end of the golden age of the compact disc. Everything about the business has changed since then. Loaded question: How have you adjusted?

IT: It’s not like we were really successful and really loaded and had a bunch of money and then someone suddenly turned the tap off. Our main source of income has always been the road, playing as many shows as we can. We sold a bunch of that first record just before people stopped buying records. I’ve since adjusted my expectations. I think a lot of musicians my age who lived through that, there’s a shot you gotta take. It’s a big piece of humble pie when all the bands that were just before us that really hit — they’re still out there playing shows, whereas we… Well, the last couple of years, we’ve been slowly growing back up again.

Having said that, there was something kind of freeing about it because I didn’t have to serve a master. I didn’t have to keep rewriting (Big Wreck hits like) That Song or The Oaf. I don’t have to bow to any previous expectations about what Big Wreck means.

AC: How has your approach and sound changed over all those albums?

IT: I think it’s become more refined. The process is still the same. There are little shortcuts that we can employ now, like my phone. I can hum something into my phone when something just falls in my lap, and I’m, “OK, that’s something.” Sometimes I’ll sit here on the computer and start mapping a song out, or sometimes I’ll just record something on my phone and leave little breadcrumbs to visit later. But it’s still waiting for a drop of inspiration. And then you craft it.

As craftsmen, I think we’ve gotten better. I think I’ve gotten better. And I’m better at recognizing a good idea from a not-so-great one. Back in the old days, a lot of the ideas I’d stumble on would turn into something different in the garage the next day when we started beating it around. Sometimes, though, the inspiration can get blurry, lost, when you start pushing it in whatever direction. And then you end up laying it down and you say, “No, I don’t think this is gonna work.”

AC: How much time do you spend chasing that guitar tone you hear in your head?

IT: It’s part and parcel with the chase for the perfect chorus or the perfect verse, a grouping of words, a grouping of notes. The things that make your hairs stand up and give you chills. Today, I think it’s all about the silly rhyme and “Ooo, that was a good hook.” It’s not about all the things that keep me up at night, which are things like the guitar tone. I think it’s all important. Half the juice going into the studio and recording is that, because that can often inspire a different part, or how a phrase gets laid down. Most musicians are reactive and you react to what you’re hearing.

Same thing with a microphone and an effect you put on your vocal. You’ll sing different, treat the mic differently, depending on what’s going on. If you move a mic a centimetre (one way or the other) in front of an amplifier, it changes the sound drastically. Every once in a while you trip over some magic. There’s no plug-in for that. There’s no app.

AC: This album, The Rest of the Story, was recorded at Noble Studios in Toronto, which is a really good studio.

IT: We got lucky. We were going to release three EPs but then decided to do one EP and a full album. We booked the studio for two weeks to get basic tracks for 17 or 18 songs. But Dave (McMilliam, bass) and Sekou (Lumumba, drums) go through their tracks in about five days. Nick (Raskulinecz, producer) said, “You’re going to need to get a truck to get your guitars and amps down here because we’re going to get to use all these goodies.” We ended up cutting a lot of guitars there.

AC: Why is the album called The Rest of the Story?

IT: I just figured it was a good tie-in to Pages, the EP that preceded this. We were going to have Pages 1, Pages 2 and Pages 3, but it became an entity unto itself.

AC: Any surprises?

IT: The surprises are something that happens every single day while you’re in the studio. That’s why I’m the first one in and the last one to leave. And the good stuff starts to happen when someone says, “What if…?”

AC: What’s next?

IT: We gave a few shows on the books for the rest of the year and we’re heading out the first quarter of next year. We’re going out with Live Across Canada, which should be fun. I don’t think we’ve played with them before. And we have some other ideas that we’re discussing as well.

The Rest of the Story is out Oct. 24. This interview was condensed and lightly edited for clarity.

My Morning Jacket Celebrate 20 Years of Z at Brooklyn Paramount: Review

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

What is there left to say about My Morning Jacket as a live act? Lore and eyewitness accounts confirm that they’ve always been mighty, whether overshadowing Ben Kweller and Guided by Voices as a barnstorming opener in their early days or creating their own Mount Olympus with a career-defining set at Bonnaroo in 2008. Hell, last night’s kickoff of their three-show Brooklyn Paramount run wasn’t even the first time they had played 2005’s Z front to back in NYC.

As a (somehow) first-time eyewitness to their live show myself, I could run down the standard audiovisual reportage: Jim James toggling between wavy frontman choreography (opener “Wordless Chorus”) and elephantine shredding (“Anytime”); utility wunderkind turned elder statesman Carl Broemel calmly slipping into sax mode for an extended album finale (“Dondante”); Patrick Hallahan’s hair-raising snare hits; the backlighting of old-school LED grids that, through simple triangulation, mutated a smiley face into a constellation of the under-the-knife owl beak that graces Z’s cover art.

Get My Morning Jacket Tickets Here

But if you’re a fan or even just someone who’s casually caught one of MMJ’s concerts in the past, you’ve already seen the band’s craftsmanship and volcanic energy on display. You don’t need someone to extoll their in-the-flesh greatness, unparalleled as it may be and probably has been since their inception. This morning, head still blissfully buzzing from last night, I find myself thinking about what Z meant when it was released 20 years ago and what it means through the lens of live performance in 2025.

Related Video

It may seem quaint now in a post-social media age when genre barriers have all but disappeared for music fans, but Z felt like the hardest of pivots in the early aughts. It was an evolution from three albums of rootsy jamming (most notably, 2003’s It Still Moves) to spacey synthesizers, shorter song lengths, and lyrics that skewed more surrealistic (or maybe spiritual, depending on your own religious convictions), all of which earned MMJ the now-tired superlative of “the American Radiohead” from several publications.

The psychedelic detour proved to be prophetic not only for the band themselves (subsequent releases Evil Urges and Circuital would both be viewed as similarly and even controversially metamorphic), but several later acts who would fall under the loosely defined umbrella of “alt country” —  at least at some point during their rise. Sturgill Simpson, Big Thief, and even Kings of Leon would all come out of the gate saddled with the Americana label, only to go a little more cosmic a few albums in. And while MMJ certainly wasn’t the first country-adjacent act to drastically weirden their sound, Z (along with Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) feels like the modern template for doing so.

Where the band’s transformation in 2005 felt purely aesthetic, however, hearing the record’s morphing sounds in a live setting 20 years later felt contextual and thematic — a response to the chaos of modern history in the making. When James finally addressed the crowd at the album’s halfway point — between an extra dubbed-out “Off the Record” and extra-carnivalized “Into the Woods” — he spoke briefly about the album’s importance in their career and its relationship to New York (the band relocated from their native Louisville to the Catskills for recording). He then went on to proclaim that everyone in the ornate Brooklyn Paramount ballroom was on a new plane of consciousness together to celebrate peace and love.

Now, I know how those words look on paper — vague, shamanistic, perhaps even cultish. And being invited to let loose and enjoy one’s self in an environment of rising authoritarianism isn’t exactly revelatory. But it is increasingly essential amidst the fear, violence, and turbulence of 2025 and beyond, and James has always come across as sincere in his calls for harmony. The brevity of his banter also prevented it from being condescending or sermonizing.

With all of that in mind, the expansiveness of Z suddenly felt heavier, a reminder of the importance of staying flexible — artistically, socially, societally — so we can hold onto some happiness in a world that none of us can predict. And by the start of a second, non-Z set, it became clear that all the various shards of MMJ’s prismatic identity were still there and always had been — past, present, and future. Encore closer “Magheeta” took on a little bit of the cybernetic freakiness of Z (the LEDs helped), the live debut of oddity “The Devil’s Peanut Butter” off the Z 20th anniversary edition was an immediate fusion of the pre- and post-Z eras, and come to think of it, had “Off the Record” even been that dubbed out, or were the riffs extra-muscular and mountained up? Probably both. Even the three cuts from this year’s is were already seeing their accessibility give way to amorphism.

It’s also worth mentioning the giant stuffed bears that have been an onstage mainstay almost as long as My Morning Jacket have been a band. They’ve always been somewhat totemic, with one of them famously gracing the cover of It Still Moves as a kind of symbol of meaningful guidance. But the ursine imagery was especially palpable last night, a specter of a past that had never really disappeared in the first place. For a legendary live act, owl and bear are in the same menagerie, artistic pivots eventually come full circle to blur the lines of several genres, and elasticity becomes a means of fulfillment — and thus a means of survival — for band and audience alike.

The Patient Star: 25 Years Of Hard Work And Finally, A Filmfare Award! | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 18, 2025

Born to legendary Bollywood parents, he entered the film industry under immense pressure. After a rocky start, a breakthrough came with a 2004 blockbuster. He later delivered several commercial hits and earned a National Award as a producer. His personal life, including a high-profile marriage, often made headlines. After 25 years, he finally received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor, marking a story of resilience and quiet success.

Born on February 5, 1976, to film legends Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan came bearing daunting pressure to fulfill his father’s giant shadow. His 2000 debut in Refugee was not bad but reasonably successful. But his early years were a string of box-office duds.

Dhoom, the 2004 action film, was his money-maker as it was his first blockbuster and career-maker. It was followed by success with Bunty Aur Babli (2005) with Rani Mukerji and Guru (2007), both of which were successful at the box office though these performances yielded him no Filmfare Award.

Abhishek continued to add hits to his filmography in the shape of Dus (2005), Dhoom 2 (2006), Dhoom 3 (2013), Dostana (2008), Bol Bachchan (2012), Happy New Year (2014), and Housefull 3 (2016). He won a National Film Award as a producer in 2009 for Paa, and earned yet another feather for himself.

His personal life also hit the headlines. He became engaged to actress Karisma Kapoor in 2002, which was ended in 2003. He then fell in love with Aishwarya Rai when they were working on Dhoom 2. Abhishek and Aishwarya became engaged in January 2007 and were married on April 20, 2007. The two had a child, a daughter Aaradhya, on November 16, 2011. Despite passing rumors in the media, the couple is stable, frequently demonstrating publicly their respect for each other.

For years of unyielding commitment, Abhishek at last got his first Filmfare Best Actor award for I Want To Talk, the highlight of his 25-year-old career as an actor. His own is a testament to hard work, change, and humble success—both on and off screen.

‘The Walking Dead’ could go on for another 15 years

by jummy84 October 15, 2025

Long running TV show, The Walking Dead, could continue for another 15 years says one of the series’ producers.

During a panel at New York Comic-Con to mark the 15th anniversary of the TV series’ premiere on AMC Network, the show’s writer and executive producer Scott M. Gimple said there were many storylines still to still explore.

Speaking alongside the cast of Daryl Dixon – the Walking Dead-spinoff series, which follows Norman Reedus’ iconic character, Gimple said: “It’s quite possible we could see this group up here 15 years from now,” (as per Variety).

“There are many more continents to visit. It’s about how [the characters] evolve over time. It’s really exciting to see how far we can take this,” he continued. “In a lot of ways, [the locations] give the story to us,” he said of the extensive possibilities the locations of the stories bring.

He went on to compare the world-building of the stories to those in Marvel and DC movies.
“It was all one story. It went in all sorts of different directions,” he explained during the panel session. “Even with characters who have done so many things, we can put them in different worlds where they have different challenges and evolve them through these challenges.”

The Walking Dead original series ran for 11 seasons, finishing in 2022. Daryl Dixon is the fifth TV spin-off in The Walking Dead franchise, after Fear The Walking Dead, World Beyond, Tales Of The Walking Dead and Dead City. Another spin-off debuted in 2024, titled The Ones Who Live, bringing the total number to six.

In July this year, AMC renewed The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon for a fourth and final season, which will consist of eight episodes.

Speaking about the show’s end, Norman Reedus said: “Daryl Dixon has been an incredible journey. I thank each and every fan who has joined us on this ride. It’s been a privilege to build this story for these characters, and we have so much gratitude for how it’s been embraced.

“Your love and support have made every moment worth it. This finale isn’t just an ending; it’s a celebration of what we’ve all shared together. Keep carrying that love forward – Daryl’s journey is far from over.”

The show has received a mostly positive response from critics and fans since it’s airing.

Watch Grizzly Bear reunite for first live show in six years

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Grizzly Bear reunited for their first live show in six years last night (October 13) – check out footage from the gig below.

The Brooklyn indie four-piece went on hiatus in 2019, two years after the release of their most recent album, ‘Painted Ruins’.

In November 2023, a couple of months after sharing that he opened up his own therapy practice, founder and co-lead vocalist Ed Droste suggested that the band could end their hiatus at some stage, and in May this year, the band announced their return with news of a US tour in the autumn.

Last night, the band kicked off the tour with their first of five homecoming shows at Brooklyn Steel, and the setlist took fans all the way through their career. Their 2013 single ‘Will Calls’ got its live debut, while ‘Alligator’, from their 2004 debut album ‘Horn Of Plenty’, was played for the first time since 2008.

Another live rarity, 2006’s ‘Little Brother’, was played for the first time since 2014. And the show also saw their first documented performance of ‘Deep Sea Diver’ (via Setlist.fm) – likely the first time it’s been played since 2005.

They played many of their most popular tracks, too, including ‘Two Weeks’, ‘Yet Again’, and ‘Mourning Sound’.

Grizzly Bear’s Brooklyn setlist was:

‘Southern Point’
‘Alligator’
‘Sleeping Ute’
‘Mourning Sound’
‘Yet Again’
‘Cut-Out’
‘Little Brother’
‘Ready, Able’
‘Fine For Now’
‘Foreground Play’
‘While You Wait For The Others’
‘Will Calls’
‘Two Weeks’
‘On A Neck, On A Spit’
‘Three Rings’
‘Sun In Your Eyes’
Encore:
‘Deep Sea Diver’
‘Sky Took Hold’

Speaking to Pitchfork last week, they said that they’ll be switching their setlists up every night, Co-lead vocalist Daniel Rossen saying: “We’re trying to balance the songs that we assume are the popular ones or algorithmically favourite songs, coupled with more obscure songs that we maybe wouldn’t have touched at the time.”

Tonight (October 14), Grizzly Bear are set to return to Brooklyn Steel, before another three shows there on October 16, 17 and 18. They’re then playing two shows in Chicago before heading to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland. You can find remaining tickets here.

From October 16, they’ll be joined by Beach House vocalist Victoria Legrand for a handful of songs each night. “Truly honored to have such a queen with us,” they said when announcing the news last week.

While on hiatus, Droste confirmed in 2020 that he’d left and was studying to become a therapist, though Rossen and drummer Chris Bear continued to work together in the meantime, including on the soundtrack to the 2023 movie Past Lives.

Rossen also released his debut solo album, ‘You Belong There’, in 2022, and supported it with a series of North American and European tour dates.

Peaches Announces Tour and First Album in 10 Years, Shares New Song: Listen

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Peaches is back with a new song, along with the announcement of a tour and her first album in a decade. The follow-up to her 2015 album Rub is called No Lube So Rude, and it comes out on an unspecified date next year. “Not in Your Mouth None of Your Business,” recorded with producer the Squirt Deluxe, is out right now, and you can listen to it below.

The North American tour kicks off in February, 2026, with support from Model/Actriz and Cortisa Star. A dollar from each ticket sale will go to Trans Justice Funding Project, via Plus1.

Peaches says of the new music, “When the world is friction, lube isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. It’s how you turn that friction into pleasure, into power, into pride. I want people to understand that they can still have a voice no matter who they are or what the world says about them. Now more than ever, there are so many forces that just want you to give up and be quiet. If this album can help you resist that, then that’s what it’s for.” The video description adds that it is “a chant
for trans and queer autonomy.”

‘Not every star kid gets all on a platter’: Pranutan Bahl reveals facing rejection for 2 years before debut | Interview

As the granddaughter of Nutan, grandniece of Tanuja, and daughter of Mohnish Bahl, actor Pranutan Bahl carries an acting legacy that most would be envious of. The actor is aware of her privileges and says coming from a film family has allowed her to be better prepared, but lists some pitfalls of being the proverbial insider, too. In a candid conversation with Hindustan Times, Pranutan talks about her acting journey and legacy.

Pranutan Bahl talks about her acting journey and career.

On early education in a film family

Pranutan made her acting debut opposite Zaheer Iqbal in the 2019 film Notebook. Talking about that beginning, she says, “Because I was surrounded by actors, what became easier for me was getting to know that it’s a tough industry. You learn that you’re going to be laden with lots of spells of no work. I had those warnings given to me. A lot of people who don’t have parents from the industry don’t get all that, and for them, that’s a harder emotional journey.”

Battling rejections

But Pranutan is quick to dismiss the notion that all ‘star kids’ have it easy in the film industry. “Every star kid does not get everything on a platter, and I am living proof of it. It’s not like just because I’m an actor’s kid, I have got things on a platter or my family is funding films from the back end,” she says.

The actor reveals that even though her first film was released in 2019, she had begun giving auditions as early as 2016. She recalls, “I didn’t have to deal with the emotional upheaval of being an actor in that sense that everything was not a shock to me. But, of course, that emotional journey is different. You have to deal with a lot of rejection. I started my auditions in 2016, and it was in 2018 that I got my first movie. And even after that, I continued to give auditions. I gave an audition just three days back.”

Pranutan says that a lot of the hardships of her journey depended upon her choices, wherein she wanted to get everything on her own terms. “I walked into auditions and just told my first name because I didn’t want people to draw the connection,” she says. “So, nobody knew I was from a film family. My theory behind this was, I don’t want to get a call back from a casting director because they know I’m Nutan’s granddaughter or Mohnish Bahl’s daughter. At that stage in my career, I needed to know that the callback I am getting is for my talent.”

Pranutan’s acting career

After the release of Notebook, Pranutan starred in Helmet and Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani. The actor will next be seen in the Hindi-English bilingual film Coco & Nut. Pranutan has finished filming two other films – a cop drama and a thriller. They are also awaiting release.
