Is Taylor Swift’s ‘Actually Romantic’ About Charli XCX? An Investigation

According to Swifties, The Life of a Showgirl proves Taylor Swift did not miss the so-called “diss track” on last summer’s hit Charli XCX album, Brat.

I put diss track in quotes, because the 33-year-old British singer put out a PSA to fans that none of the album’s songs (aside from “Von Dutch”) fit into that category. “They’re really just about how it’s so complicated being an artist, especially a female artist, where you are pitted against your peers and also expected to be best friends with every single person constantly, when if you’re not, you’re deemed a bad feminist,” she said in a TikTok video in May 2024, adding, “That, to me is just like, such an unrealistic expectation.”

She continued, “These songs are kind of about how as a woman, as an artist, some days you can feel on top of the world, some days you can feel unbelievably insecure, other days you can feel highly competitive. Sometimes you can feel like literal trash. And it’s really emotional and it’s complicated to deal with, and we’re not supposed to talk about it, but these songs do talk about it. And I’ll probably chastised about it, but whatever, it’s reality.”

Following the release of Brat, Swift praised Charli in a Vulture profile while making no mention of the track fueling feud rumors, “Sympathy Is a Knife.”

Now, fans believe she was saving her thoughts for The Life of a Showgirl. On October 1, the lyrics to “Actually Romantic” made their way online ahead of the album’s official release, and fans didn’t wait for confirmation before starting to connect the dots.

The Charli XCX and Taylor Swift Beef Rumors, Explained

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Online, fans immediately began speculating that the song is about Taylor Swift, largely due to the lyrics, “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick,” which appear to be a reference to Swift’s headline-making relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Charli recently wed Healy’s bandmate, drummer George Daniel.

Though “I hope they break up quick” is not a flattering lyric, the rest of the song is fairly innocuous—a peek behind the curtain at Charli’s anxiety-riddled mind. Later she would explain that the song “is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”

The Matty Healy of it all

Days after the release of Brat on June 7, 2024, the model Gabriette—who also happens to be a close friend and former bandmate of Charli—shared a photo of an engagement ring from The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” Gabriette wrote in green text over a photo of her black diamond ring.

Healy’s mother later confirmed the engagement during an appearance on the British talk show Loose Women.

Healy, of course, is largely believed to be the titular villain of Swift’s 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April of 2024. Swift and Healy’s short-lived affair was the hottest story of spring-summer 2023, spun as a rebound relationship following Swift’s breakup with the British actor Joe Alwyn. It is believed that Gabriette and Healy began dating shortly after his breakup from Swift.

Given Charli’s “I hope they break up” lyric and the fact that Healy moved on with one of her dear friends, Swifties were left with a sour taste in their mouths following the engagement announcement. However, there’s no evidence of any foul play on Charli’s, Healy’s, or Gabriette’s part.

Charli shuts down anti-Taylor chants at her shows: “I will not tolerate it.”

On June 23, Charli condemned a video of some of her Brazilian fans chanting “Death to Taylor” in Portuguese at one of her shows.

Charli XCX and George Daniel had their big wedding celebration last weekend following a low-key ceremony in July, and both Caroline Polachek and Yung Lean sang at the bash. Check out the footage below.

The singer, real name Charlotte Aitchison, and The 1975 drummer Daniel celebrated in the Sicilian village of Scopello complete with numerous friends from the worlds of music and celebrity.

Polachek, a frequent collaborator of Charli, sang Daniel Johnston’s 1984 song ‘True Love Will Find You In The End’ as the couple walked down the aisle.

Swedish rapper Yung Lean, real name Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, sang The Stooges’ 1969 proto-punk classic ‘I Wanna Be A Dog’ with a live band, too. Daniel’s 1975 bandmate Matty Healy and his fiancée Gabbriette, both absent from the July ceremony, joined Håsted onstage after the former crowdsurfed for a while, too.

Healy himself performed with his dad, actor Tim, as they sang ‘Perfect Day’ by Lou Reed, one of Charli’s idols. He played a DJ set, too, which included Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’, while his mum, actress and TV personality Denise Welch, was invited too and shared a montage of footage from the celebrations on Instagram.

Among the other musicians there were PC Music founder A. G. Cook and producer Easyfun, who played a remix of Charli’s hyperpop classic ‘Vroom Vroom’, singers Beabadoobee, Robyn, Clairo and Troye Sivan, and actress Julia Fox.

Charli has shared a range of photos from the ceremony on Instagram too, the most recent selection being fronted by one of her and Daniel kissing.

The couple first worked together in 2021, when they recorded the track ‘Spinning’. A year later, they confirmed their romance on social media, and in November 2023, they got engaged.

In a TikTok post, Charli shared that her song ‘Talk Talk’, from her 2024 album ‘Brat’, was written about an incident involving Daniel at the 2020 NME Awards, in which she almost followed him to the bathroom but decided against it when halfway there.

That night, Charli was nominated for Best Solo Act In The World, Best British Solo Act and Best Collaboration. She also presented the Songwriter Of The Decade Award to Robyn alongside Christine And The Queens.

Daniel was also present, with The 1975 being awarded the Band Of The Decade Award, as well as Best British Band and the NME Innovation Award.

Charli XCX, Alex Kapranos, Ciara and more lead tributes to legendary music video director Diane Martel: “A great artist”

by jummy84 September 19, 2025

Tributes have been shared after the death of legendary music video director Diane Martel, who has died.

The iconic director worked alongside some of the biggest names in music, including Mariah Carey, The Killers, Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Pharrell, and Justin Timberlake over the years, helping to helm visuals for some of their most successful tracks.

In a statement from her family, it was confirmed that Martel died yesterday (Thursday September 18), aged 63.

“Diane passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital – surrounded by friends and family – after a long battle with breast cancer,” it read.

“She is survived by her Aunt, Gail Merrifield Papp (wife of Joseph Papp, founder of The Public Theatre), her three beloved, loyal cats (Poki, PopPop, PomPom) and many loving lifetime friends.”

Tributes have been coming in across social media too, with artists she worked alongside and fans sharing posts paying their respects to the late director.

Sharing a post on Instagram Stories, Charli XCX said: “R.I.P Diane. You are one in a million. You taught me so much about art and spontaneity and chaos. And thank you for introducing me to so many friends who I’m now so close to. Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for everything.”

Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos shared a post with the caption: “It’s too soon for me to properly comprehend this. I’m just numb. She was a great artist and if you’re curious about her work, just google her and you’ll spend hours discovering the incredible work she made.”

“What you won’t learn about is what an astonishing human being she was. A massive support for me in so many ways, as well as being the smartest, wittiest companion. The source of the finest understanding of all art forms from the highest to the lowest,” he added, explaining how their friendship goes back over 20 years. “I’d never met anyone like her before. Fearless and intellectually ravenous, while being rooted to the street. I’m so fortunate that I knew her. Could call her my friend.”

The last music video Martel directed was for Ciara’s song ‘Ecstasy’, and in a new tribute, the singer shared: “You believed in me and I believed in you! You will forever hold a special place in my heart and I am forever grateful for all the magic we were able to make together”.

Find more tributes below.

A masterful storyteller and visual savant, Diane Martel provided the moving pictures that accompanied some of the most important music of the culture and then some. And this doesn’t even scratch the surface.

A whole icon. May she rest peacefully. 🕊️https://t.co/r0JaTNTe8R pic.twitter.com/1eLMazXDMT

I instantly thought of Ciara when hearing of Diane Martel’s passing. Ecstasy appears to be her last credit. I always think of them as a creative duo, considering how iconic their catalog together is, They raised me, I fear music videos will never be as significant again. 🥺🕊️ pic.twitter.com/O2XHyUITrK

The first music video Martel directed was for hardcore hip-hop group Onyx’s ‘Throw Ya Guns’ back in 1992, and Rolling Stone highlights that she also went on to work with other huge names in the New York rap scene including Method Man, Gang Starr, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, LL Cool J, and Keith Murray.

She also had credits working on film projects and getting involved in dance and choreography, and went on to work closely with Mariah Carey over the years – directing videos for ‘My All’, ‘Dreamlover’ and ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’.

Other huge songs she made music videos for include ‘Like I Love You’ and ‘Love Sex Magic’ by Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a Bottle’ and ‘What A Girl Wants’, Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You’, Addison Rae’s ‘Obsessed’, The White Stripes’ ‘Conquest’, The Killers’ ‘Read My Mind’, and Britney Spears’ ‘3’.

She was also behind the two controversial 2013 videos for Robin Thicke (‘Blurred Lines’) and Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop’. For Miley, she also served as the creative director for the divisive performance at the 2013 MTV VMAs, and held that same role for the ‘Bangerz’ tour.

She was nominated for Best Direction at the VMAs in 2005, up for the award with Francis Lawrence for Jennifer Lopez’s song ‘Get Right’.

Martel turned her sights to other projects over the past five years. In 2022, she was named the Harlan J. Strauss Visiting Filmmaker at the University of Oregon and led a series of community events there.
