Dar Williams Commits to the ‘Hummingbird Highway’ » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Dar Williams toured a spice farm in Belize set amid pristine jungles and primordial Mayan ruins. At a bumpy junction, the driver informed the passengers that there were three possible options: steering east, veering west, or staying on the middle road, which he referred to as the Hummingbird Highway. The instant wholly seized Williams‘ attention. Something about the trail choices resonated, especially the enticing description of the middle one, which struck her as a vivid metaphor for human life.

Dar Williams, one of folk music’s most cherished gifts, titled her newest album, Hummingbird Highway, a homage to the interdependence of boundless getaway and eternal return, another impressive offering from someone whose heart first journeyed to music long ago, and whose emotional vigilance and poetic vigor seem to only intensify with age. Indeed, the more Williams thought about the variety of roads, the more similarities she hit upon between herself and the hummingbird. “Hummingbirds have these fantastic migrations and hummingbirds need constant fueling,” said Williams.

Shortly after the Belize trip, Williams met a woman who told her that she and her daughter had matching hummingbird tattoos, which the woman described as symbolic of distance and closeness, departure and arrival, the desire to fly in every direction with an understanding that the lucky ones can always ground again at home. Williams treasured the richness of all of this imagery. Once again, she contemplated the hummingbird, finding numerous analogies to the human experience and extracting her own correlations.

“Curiosity, love, longing, we’ve got all of these ways of getting around,” notes Williams. “And it’s not always going forward. Like an artist, the hummingbird goes upside down and goes inside out. Flexibility, creativity, fastness, and travel all make for a complicated person and parent. Hummingbird Highway was written from the perspective of a child, one with a peripatetic, depressed, perhaps bipolar, frenetic, creative, generous, loving parent.”

In a recording career that began with a demo tape in 1990 titled I Have No History, Williams has long leaned on songwriting (Hummingbird Highway is her 11th album) and other forms of writing (she has written several travelogues and non-fiction books) to cast off and expose her blood and beauty to the world. Her creative journey was nurtured early in childhood, bolstered by the support of parents who, as she said, “leaned into the commons culturally”. Born and raised in Westchester County, New York, music was always in the air at home. So, too, was love and praise.

Her mother, a preschool teacher, believed in letting her students and children choose their instruments first and then take lessons to learn how to play them, not the other way around. Her parents always supported their community’s arts programs; on one occasion, they even sold grapefruits to raise funds for the local orchestra.

“I think that that influenced my love of working with coffeehouses,” said Williams. “It has influenced my love of things like art spaces that somehow figured out how to run a complex sound system, places that were community crowdfunded by a bunch of people who retrofitted it themselves from an old shoe store.”

Most of the music shaping Williams’ preferences she first heard long ago in her parents’ vinyl collection. At age 17, home from school one afternoon, she pulled out a couple of Judy Collins‘ records. She fell in love with Collins’ 1967 album, Wildflowers, which featured powerful orchestral arrangements by Joshua Rifkin and included her nourishing tone on songs by Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. She remembers lines to “Sons Of”, a track from the 1970 album Whales & Nightingales, as if she had just heard them moments ago.

“On these two albums by Judy, there were songs about lost sons and going to war and never coming back and brilliant, classical arrangements by Rikfin. There was poetry, peace, Pete Seeger, Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel, a song with whales in it … Music made around that time, the musicians literally considered themselves to be turning the wheels of life and death, of culture and civilization. I wanted to be a part of that fabric.”

Williams treasured the pomp and flaming fire of Marvin Gaye, his charged, sexualized characteristics, his Motown expression, as well as his connection to the wider world of society and humanity. Because of him, music became more to her than just what was present in her home and town. Music now represented the fullness of the planet. She was no longer merely listening to voices and sounds but comprehending human dignity. Simon and Garfunkel were also key early influences.

“Paul Simon‘s iconography of urban life and ordinary things, buildings, people, and food, influences me to this day,” said Williams. “The idea of trying to create a sacred landscape from our daily lives comes directly from Simon and Garfunkel.”

Committing to Worlds, Finding Inner Blueprint

Hummingbird Highway is classic Dar Williams, a fresh supply of drink from the ever-flowing spring, exemplifying all of the strong points that make her music enjoyable in all its words and ways. Spot on humility supplies the nourishment of every song. Some express gladness, some are heavy, some are weightless, and others reflect her attempt to reconcile everything within herself. Breadth and beauty reside in all of them, displaying and epitomizing a songwriting mantra that Williams has practiced for a while, which is to allow the song the latitude to grow and shine on its own terms.

“My personal motto is to stick to writing the song that you are writing,” said Williams. “You shouldn’t just bat away a perfectly delightful song about a dragonfly landing on your shoulder, right? You can get to the bottom of a song, whether it is a lighthearted or not-so-lighthearted song. Just keep yourself in the shoes of the characters, and find out what’s really happening. Songwriting is committing to the world that you find yourself in.

“We go to music that makes us cry, helps us laugh, helps us bang our heads around, and makes us forget things, or makes us be in the ecstatic moment and escape from the murky depths. Feel that first inspiration and keep on going. It ends up being deeper than you thought anyway, even if it’s a flaky song. It’s a way into your inner blueprint, and there is a reason it surfaced at that moment. Who are we to say what’s deep and what’s not deep?”

Williams doesn’t journal or write every single day. She does, however, seek to be inspired daily, constantly looking for something surprising or special in the ordinary flashes of day-to-day life, a need that she can satisfy sitting at a museum or on a park bench.

“That’s part of the honest struggle between pedestrian things and poetic things,” said Williams. “The artist decides all of that on a personal level and decides what in their life it is that they would like to turn into poetry.”

Archeology of Life’s Work

The deeper she delves into her career, the more Dar Williams realizes that there is a holy motion guiding every recording, pushed forward by an intention that’s both specific and cumulative.

“Music is like archaeology, where there are a lot of layers,” said Williams. “And each album is a layer, and an album is an eon of my life. Looking back, I can pinpoint times in my life depending on which album I was writing or touring with and what issues were coming up. Like archaeology, it all sort of seems to make sense in its own world, even though it doesn’t at the time it [the record] comes out. There is a certain palate, a certain feel, a certain personality, and a certain neuroses attached to each album. It is another way to keep a chronicle of a life and another way to gauge a life.”

Many of the songs on Hummingbird Highway were written during the pandemic and hold numerous references to birds, indicative of a point when Williams spent hours alone staring at and refilling the bird feeder in the garden. Songs include “Tu Sais Le Printemps”, a French bossa nova tune, and “All Is Come Undone”, a piece of writing which came to Williams as she was breaking up earth in the backyard, attempting to convert an idle spec of dirt into a thriving meadow, listening to Thomas Hardy’s poem “The Later Autumn”.

Dar Williams’ stab at modern Americana, “Put the Coins on His Eyes”, was inspired by the storied history of early labor unions, movements, and revolutions in the US, and all of the agitation, suppression, and violence marking their expansions and downfalls.

Magic of Making Music Together

The joy of taking a batch of new songs on the road is still undeniable to Dar Williams, who approaches every night with an alchemist’s urge for transformation, a reverence for experimentation, and a spiritual curiosity about the essence of things.

“It is a great thing to walk out and feel the energy of the people,” said Williams. “It’s best when there is no skepticism and no suspicion. But some audiences are tentative. You can feel it within the first couple of songs, like a massage therapist who feels tension; you feel the accretion of awareness for what kind of energy field you are walking into. The goal is to get to another place musically together with the audience.”

Robin Williams’ daughter slams those ‘puppeteering’ him with AI online – National

Robin Williams’ daughter, Zelda Williams, has asked the public to stop “puppeteering” and sending her AI-generated videos of her late father, who died by suicide in 2014.

“Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad,” Zelda, 36, posted on her Instagram story on Monday.

“Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t. If you’re just trying to troll me, I’ve seen way worse, I’ll restrict and move on,” she wrote.

“But please, if you’ve got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s NOT what he’d want,” the post continued.

It is not the first time Zelda, an actor and filmmaker who directed the 2024 horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, has spoken out against the creation of AI content featuring her father.

In an Instagram post from 2023, she stated that attempting to recreate his voice and likeness using AI was “personally disturbing,” according to the BBC.

Williams, who was 63 when he died, was famous for starring in films such as Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting and Good Morning, Vietnam, but Zelda says regurgitated digital content is an insult to his legacy.

“To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to ‘this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that’s enough’, just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening,” she wrote.

“TikTok slop” is a term used to describe low-quality content generated using artificial intelligence that is often circulated on social media.

“You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else’s throat hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up and like it. Gross,” she continued.

Williams was reportedly struggling with mental health issues around the time of his death.

Zelda’s comments follow a controversy surrounding the introduction of an AI actor called Tilly Norwood.

Norwood is a character created entirely by artificial intelligence, dubbed Hollywood’s first “AI actor” by her creator, producer, and comedian, Eline Van der Velden, who has expressed her intentions to sign Norwood to a talent agency.

Tilly’s introduction has sparked concern in the film industry.

In a statement Tuesday, the Screen Actors Guild said that “creativity is, and should remain, human-centered.”

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation,” the guild said.

“It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience.”

In a post on Nowrood’s Instagram account, her creators wrote, “to those who have expressed anger over the creation of our AI character, Tilly Norwood: she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work, a piece of art. Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation, and that in itself shows the power of creativity.

Emily Blunt spoke about Norwood during an episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, referring to the idea of an AI actor as “terrifying.”

“Does it disappoint me? I don’t know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is,” Blunt said.

Robin Williams’ Daughter Slams Fans For Sending Her ‘Gross’ & ‘Maddening’ Al Videos Of Late Actor

#RobinWilliams’ daughter, Zelda Williams, is begging his fans to stop sending her “gross” and “maddening” AI-generated videos of her late father.

In a recent message shared to her IG Story, Zelda expressed, “Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t.” She further criticized the practice, stating, “You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings.”

She added in a second post, “And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it ‘the future.’ AI is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed.” This isn’t the first time Zelda has addressed the issue. In 2023, she condemned the use of AI to recreate her father’s voice, calling it “disturbing” and advocating for more stringent regulations against such practices in the entertainment industry.

Robin Williams, who was known for leading several cult classics such as #Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Good Will Hunting, passed in 2014 at 63 from su!c!de.

Zelda Williams Tells Fans to “Stop Sending AI Videos” of Her Father, Robin

by jummy84 October 7, 2025
written by jummy84

In the past, Zelda Williams has had no problem defending her father, the late, great Robin Williams. But after putting Eric Trump in his place back in 2020, the actress and director has a new target: AI.

In a series of Instagram Stories on Monday, Williams urged the internet to “stop sending me AI videos of dad.” She continued, saying she’s “seen way worse” from trolls and described the process as a “waste of time and energy,” adding, “Believe me, it’s not what he’d want.”

She went on to say that these same people are condensing people’s very lives and legacies simply so they can “churn out horrible TikTok slop puppetering.” Those videos, Williams added, can’t be considered art whatsoever but are rather “disgusting, over-processed hotdogs [sic]” made from people’s unrelated imagery/likenesses. In turn, online users are only inundated with this “slop” because some folks are “hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up.”

She went on to say that these same people are reducing entire lives and legacies just to “churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering.” Those videos, Williams added, can’t be considered art whatsoever but are rather “disgusting, over-processed hotdogs [sic]” made from people’s unrelated imagery/likenesses. In turn, online users are only flooded with this “slop” because some folks are “hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Zelda Williams delivered this undeniable truth bomb: AI isn’t “the future,” it’s simply “recycling and regurgitating the past.” And for the grand finale, she threw in a conversation-ending haymaker:

“You are taking in The Human Centipede of content, and from the very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.”

If we could for a moment, GOTDAMN.

But more seriously, even a tertiary glance at TikTok and similar platforms will reveal dozens and dozens of AI-generated Robin Williams videos/clips. None of them are worth linking to or referencing directly, but all of them are guilty of either infringing on various IP and trademarks as well as being generally obtuse regarding the ideas and opinions of a man they’d never known let alone ever met. It’s painful as fans of Williams to see his image be needlessly manipulated, especially when the work he left beyond already checked so many boxes in terms of emotional content and genre offerings.

Zelda Williams previously struck back at AI during 2023’s SAG-AFTRA strike. In response to people at the time having already used Robin Williams’ voice for various AI-generated media, Zelda said that while she found that “personally disturbing…the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings.” She went on to declare that “living actors deserve a chance to create characters with their choices.”

Hayley Williams says she turned down contributing song to ‘Jennifer’s Body’ due to bandmate Josh Farro: “He was an ass”

by jummy84 October 2, 2025

Hayley Williams has revealed that Paramore were forced to turn down an opportunity to work on the Jennifer’s Body soundtrack because of former bandmate Josh Farro’s reservations about the film.

  • READ MORE: Hayley Williams’ surprise 17-song release is a bold choose-your-own-adventure through hope and heartache

Alongside tracks from artists like Panic! At The Disco, Cute Is What We Aim For, and Dashboard Confessional, her song ‘Teenagers‘ appeared on the soundtrack to the cult-classic horror comedy.

As Williams recently revealed, Paramore also could have contributed music to the Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried-starring film, but ultimately declined. In an interview with the New York Times, the frontwoman discussed her recently dropped surprise solo album and touched on turning down the opportunity.

“There were a lot of things that I even wanted to do that they weren’t supportive of,” she said. “And when I say ‘they,’ I mostly mean Zac’s brother, ’cause he was an ass.”

She was referring to Josh Farro, Paramore’s original lead guitarist, who left the band in 2010 because of his differing religious beliefs.

“I turned down the end credits of Jennifer’s Body for him. You know what I mean? There’s so much lore! There’s so much people don’t know.” She speculated that given he grew up “fundamental Christian”, he “didn’t agree” with the film’s content. While the initial reception to the film was critical, it has steadily gained a cult following after a reappraisal from fans and a queer-friendly reading of the two leads’ relationship.

When Popcast co-host Joe Coscarelli joked that Jennifer’s Body was a “demonic film,” Williams replied: “That’s the best kind.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed the “racist country singer” from her song ‘Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party’ is Morgan Wallen.

NME reviewed ‘Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party’ before its official release, giving it five stars and writing: “As with almost every era of Hayley Williams’ career, this new release has come with questions about the future of Paramore. The determined lyrics on the tender ‘I Won’t Quit On You’ should be all the reassurance worried fans need, but if that’s not enough, there’s plenty in this brilliant, swaggering new chapter to be excited about.

“These songs might be about missed second chances, but Williams is certainly making the most of hers.”

Williams then officially released the album on August 28, marking her first release as an independent artist following her record deal with Warner/Atlantic ending.

She would later reveal that although Paramore aren’t broken up, they are on a break: “We always take huge breaks. In order for us to metabolise shit that we go through as people, it takes the amount of time it takes between albums.”

bitchy | Mail: There’s a conspiracy afoot about King Charles & Prince William’s rift

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Yesterday, the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden claimed there was a dark, malevolent conspiracy afoot in the house of Windsor. That conspiracy? Prince Harry plans to visit the UK more often, which will obviously “undermine” Prince William and Kate, and King Charles is just letting it happen! That’s part of the conspiracy too, that Charles is displeased with his heir, and Charles doesn’t give a sh-t about William’s panic and rage about Harry and Meghan. Eden managed to draw out those conspiratorial observations into high crimes and misdemeanors. Well, Becky English said: wait a minute, there’s something THERE. English followed up Eden’s coverage with this piece, which sounds a lot like Prince William’s courtiers and handlers trying to placate him (while adjusting his meds). Some highlights:

The conspiracy!! If recent events are anything to go by, then something is starting to look more than a little suspect. From sources at the weekend, apparently close to the Sussexes, suggesting Prince Harry might be able to ‘help’ lighten the load of royal engagements, to claims by biographer Tina Brown that King Charles is ‘less irritated’ by his prodigal son than he is by Prince William over his work ethic, there has been a torrent of suggestions about tensions at the top. Indeed, a source close to both the King and the Prince of Wales told me starkly this week: ‘It’s evident there’s an attempt to manufacture division between them, when in reality, no such rift exists. In truth, their relationship is as strong as ever, they are aligned in their work, with many areas of shared interest, and united in their vision for the role of the Royal Family.’

Something calculated is happening: Sometimes a media whisper (that may or may not have a nugget of truth at the heart of it) is whipped up into a cacophony of speculation, particularly online. But there’s now more than a flicker of suspicion in royal circles that something more calculated could be at work. What or who may be behind the conjecture isn’t clear. But it is a worrying turn of events after I revealed earlier this year that Kensington Palace had discovered Russian bots were seeking to disseminate misinformation around the Princess of Wales’s prolonged absence from public life in the run-up to her cancer announcement last year.

William & Charles’s actual relationship: It’s important to acknowledge, in the interests of fairness, that William, 43, and his 76-year-old father have never had the easiest of relationships. No surprise given their complex family history, particularly the breakdown of Charles’s marriage to William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. Harsh words have been exchanged in the past, angry rows permeating even the thickest castle walls, sometimes within earshot of staff. There have also been clashes of opinion on the professional side, such as the retention of ivory treasures in the Royal Collection (William wants to burn them, Charles believes they should be kept as historical artefacts) which not so long ago resulted in a ‘frank’ exchange.

Windsor men’s quick temper: But really, isn’t that what families can be like? And what bothers you in your 20s or 30s, doesn’t seem quite so important at 40. Particularly given the rollercoaster of the past few years for William, with his younger brother’s very public betrayal and his wife’s shock cancer diagnosis. Similarly the King, who like many Windsor men can have a quick temper, is facing his own health challenges. While he is managing his cancer diagnosis extremely well, I am told, it has, naturally, been hugely challenging at times. And with both age and illness can often come a reassessment of what matters most. While it’s not a phrase he would personally use, the King is more of a proponent of ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ nowadays, in his own way. ‘Do they [the King and William] sit down for dinner every night, or even see each other every week? No. But they never have,’ a source reminds me. ‘However they do speak regularly and they are in absolute lockstep about the future of the monarchy and the good it can do this country.’

Competitive tensions: Another source adds: ‘Like many father-son relationships, there are occasional personal and competitive tensions. Both are very driven individuals and have very similar interests such as the environment, conservation, the military and helping deprived communities. However, they are also going about supporting them in quite different ways. Does that sometimes bring them into competition with one another? Yes, to be fair, it does. But ultimately they have the same goal: to make life better for the people of this country.’

Why Charles & William rarely do events together: ‘The whole point of having a Prince of Wales with a separate household and funding from the monarch is that they have space and autonomy to try things in a different way,’ a source argues. ‘Sometimes they get things right, sometimes wrong. But even their failures make them a better king when they get there. Don’t forget His Majesty had more than his fair share of ups and downs as heir to the throne.’

Willy’s trip to Balmoral this week: Indeed, I can reveal that they will be both be up in Scotland this week – admittedly staying in different residences (Birkhall for the King and neighbouring Balmoral for William, as is their habit) but they plan to meet and will almost certainly attend church together this Sunday. ‘Scotland is a place they both love,’ my source says.

William’s tough time: And if the King privately feels his son could possibly take up some of the slack on those royal engagements, it’s not something that comes up in conversation. ‘If prioritising his family helps make him [William] a better king, it’s got to be a good investment,’ says one who knows them both. ‘The Prince of Wales has had a universally sh***y time of late… he lost his beloved grandmother, his brother, and has faced terrible heartache with his father and his wife. If this [way of doing things] makes him feel that much more happy and confident when the moment comes and he accedes him to the throne, then that’s something his father supports.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Something to keep in mind, just one week ago, the Mail also published A.N. Wilson’s “what’s eating William” takedown. And when Tina Brown’s Fresh Hell Substack dropped – in which she openly said that Charles is less annoyed with Harry than lazy-ass William – that gave ALL of the British media an opening to publicly discuss what had been common knowledge among royalists. This isn’t a conspiracy, it’s the media starting to acknowledge that all is not well with William in particular. This piece by English is almost entirely based on William’s narrative too, this is damage-control by his office, not Charles’s. This is William “forging” his father’s signature on pity-poor-Willy talking points. “He lost his beloved grandmother, his brother…” Harry is not dead, and it’s disgusting that the only way William can get through the f–king day is by pretending that his brother is dead or a “non-person” or whatever psychotic phrasing they use.

bitchy | Prince William’s ‘red line’: ‘No royal should grant Harry the legitimacy of a meeting’

This week, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Southport for only the second time following the deadly stabbing attack on a children’s dance class in July 2024. That was William and Kate’s only public event this week – right after the Southport visit, William flew to Scotland to spend a few days with his father at Balmoral. The Telegraph said that Kate stayed behind in Windsor with the kids and the beloved school run. What’s interesting about William’s trip to Balmoral is apparently this is the second or third time he and his father have done this in the early autumn – sources now claim that it’s an annual thing for William and Charles to have private time at the tailend of Charles’s Scottish summer holiday. I’m not sure I believe that, but it’s fascinating to see that story pushed to the Sun, Telegraph and Daily Mail. Someone else not buying any of this? Tom Sykes, writing in his Royalist Substack. Some highlights:

The palace narrative: Palace spinners are in overdrive. Smarting at suggestions by The Royalist that King Charles and Prince William are at loggerheads—first reported here but now gaining traction in the broader media—the court has moved to project an image of father–son harmony, briefing the Telegraph that the two men are enjoying a “mini-break” in Scotland, set aside for “informal” chats as sovereign and heir.

The Royalist isn’t buying it: I can’t be alone in thinking that such a transparent attempt to show unity is arguably worse than none at all, as it only serves to highlight the fractures it seeks to conceal. I mean, it is hardly a secret, thanks to their actions, that far from being aligned, Charles and William are bitterly divided on the two poorly handled issues that have come to define this reign: Andrew and Harry.

William & Charles can’t agree on the Yorks: Allies justify Charles’ hopeless vacillation on the grounds of Christian teaching, filial loyalty to the late Queen’s indulgence, and even the bizarre notion that Andrew “can’t be stopped going to church.” William, by contrast, sees only weakness and naïveté on the part of his father. His line is hard and clear: Andrew should be cut off entirely, never again should he be in the monarch’s presence.

William thinks Charles is making the same mistake with Harry! He fears the same mistake is now being made with Harry. Two weeks ago, Charles invited Harry to tea and chocolate cake. Harry’s team immediately began briefing that he intended to spend more time in the U.K. William’s nightmare is that his father’s innocent, private gestures will morph into public endorsements—culminating, perhaps, in Charles appearing alongside Harry at the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Whether Charles & William are actually spending time together: The questions I’ll be looking to my sources to answer in the days ahead about this Balmoral retreat are simple: did William stay with his father at Birkhall, or apart at the castle, eight miles away? How much real time did they spend together? And was anything said, or resolved, about Harry? (We must assume William and the other adults will now prevail on the Andrew issue). What emerges about Invictus will be crucial. If Charles’ team begins suggesting he will attend while William pointedly says he will stay away, the break will become undeniable. William does not seek to stop his father reconciling with Harry privately, but he is determined to block any public rapprochement that might be the thin end of the wedge. Many courtiers agree; as one sniffed to the Mail, Harry’s team are “mistaking tea and cake for the Treaty of Versailles.”

William is still panicked about Harry: William’s red line is clear: no royal should grant Harry the legitimacy of a meeting or photograph after Spare and Netflix. Charles, by contrast, is tempted by affection for his “darling boy” and fear of appearing heartless in the shadow of his illness. William is guided not just by personal grievance but by public opinion, which is firmly against a reunion. He was right about Andrew, his friends say, and he is right about Harry. I actually think he is right as well. You can’t let people say things like that about you or your wife. William’s friends are blunt. He sees the danger in a way his father does not. Charles, ever the conciliator, believes he is embodying forgiveness. In fact, he is gambling the monarchy’s reputation on a distinction—the private family versus the public institution—that the public, by and large, refuses to make.

The background: Harry was Charles’s favorite. William thinks Charles’ monarchy is pompous and out of touch—too much ermine, too many uniforms. Charles believes his son shirks duty by putting family ahead of the job. When William hesitated to attend the Pope’s funeral because it clashed with an Aston Villa match, Charles was aghast. When William declined to mark VJ Day, courtiers were dismayed. Charles sees tradition; William sees absurd Edwardian relics. All this unfolds against the backdrop of Charles’ illness. Since he disclosed his cancer, insiders have quietly accepted that William’s reign has already begun in all but name. That makes every fracture more dangerous. William’s authority grows daily, while Charles’ ebbs away. Aligning against the heir would be folly.

[From The Royalist Substack]

Someone in the comments of an earlier post suggested that William’s trip to Scotland was less about crisis management and more about William getting in one last hunting trip. After all, Charles has apparently ceded control of organizing royal shooting parties to Peg. It would be very funny if that’s all this was, and William and Charles barely spoke. It’s always seemed to me like Charles and William are actually fine with not speaking to each other directly, and merely communicating through courtiers and the media. If you look at it that way, the past week’s stories make more sense. William didn’t rush up to Balmoral to have urgent one-on-one meetings with his father. Why would he, when he can just order his courtiers to brief the Mail and other outlets, all to try to control and contain the narrative. I 100% believe the “back-and-forth” between unnamed sources about Harry’s desire to “come back” was entirely Kensington Palace trying to make it look like Harry was briefing about the meeting with his dad. Also: I guarantee that the Invictus Games are too far off for all of this hand-wringing.

The Prince and Princess of Wales visit the Natural History Museum’s newly transformed gardens and meet children and young people taking part in learning programmes which see them connecting with nature and boosting biodiversity in urban areas.

The gardens and National Education Nature Park programme are part of the Natural History Museum’s ambitious Urban Nature Movement, an initiative which aims to help people feel more connected to nature, more confident in their ability to protect it and more invested in a greener future.
