Why Two-Part Finales Like ‘Wicked: For Good’ Don’t Work

by jummy84 November 26, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s not polite to comment when someone takes seconds at the Thanksgiving dinner table. And yet, this holiday season, “Wicked: For Good” is asking the world to watch as Universal double-dips on the magic of Jon M. Chu’s Oscar-winning musical from last year.

Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (again), this paltry sequel adapts and expands on the second half of the beloved Broadway show from 2003. “Wicked: For Good” has already made more than $223 million at the global box office. But with 69 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 percent on Metacritic, it’s a disappointment by most other metrics.

IndieWire’s Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio projected a tough awards season ahead for the film on their most recent episode of Screen Talk. Lackluster follow-ups are tough to swallow in the best of circumstances, but “Wicked: For Good” feels like extra nasty backwash in 2025.

There’s all that timely political messaging that got fumbled. But the sequel also comes amid one of the worst box office seasons in recent memory. For several weeks, we’ve watched critically acclaimed movies fail to secure the audiences that critics said they deserved. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia” has yet to make its money back despite stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons (though digital rentals, where the studios take in up to 80 percent of the profits, started today). And even bigger hits like Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” have inspired analysts like IndieWire’s Brian Welk to ask, “What even is a box-office flop anymore?”

“Wicked: For Good” will still make oceans of money in ticket sales and buckets more when you account for its pink-and-green Cynthia/Ariana merchandising. But the film industry borrows against itself by insulting hungry audiences with a bad strategy we know doesn’t work.

Give a Mouse a Cliffhanger, He’ll Make Harry Potter… Jump Off It?

TV shows and books have capitalized on cliffhangers ever since Thomas Hardy’s “A Pair of Blue Eyes” left its hero literally dangling from a rock in 1873. The Wachowskis’ “Matrix” trilogy broke ground by shooting the sequels “Reloaded” and “Revolutions” simultaneously and releasing them just six months apart — a strategy tried on earlier films and sharpened to blockbuster success in 2003. That year, Quentin Tarantino also cut “Kill Bill” in half. Saving the finale for spring, the samurai epic proved auteurs could be series unto themselves.

That same strategy eventually gave us the most lucrative franchises of the century. From the Star Wars sequels to Peter Jackson’s epic “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, the trend culminated in the $32 billion Marvel Cinematic Universe that analysts agree has helped redefine “success” at the movies today.

J.K. Rowling did the same for books in the late ’90s, introducing young adults to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and steadily expanding it into a reliable touchstone of global pop culture. “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” gained massive audiences, too, and even lesser YA best-sellers like “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” ended up on the big screen.

When the Harry Potter story concluded on the page, the movie version needed to feel just as big as the ending already on shelves. Running 784 pages in most editions, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” was a long book, no doubt. But Warner Bros.’ decision to release the finale as two parts between 2010 and 2011 was an international news item. The movies did well for the studio and director David Yates, receiving widespread critical acclaim and a total of five Oscar nominations between them. They fared even better on the financial front, with “Part 1” grossing $960 million worldwide and “Part 2” raking in $1.3 billion.

“Twilight,” “Hunger Games,” and the Beginning of the End(s)

Other franchises followed suit. Both “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” bifurcated their finales, and the collective four films still did major blockbuster numbers at the box office. But it soon became clear the strategy that had worked so well for Harry Potter was already turning sour.

Between 2011 and 2012, the “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” duology earned $967 million internationally, grossing $430 million on “Part 1” and $537 million on “Part 2.” Compare that to “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,” released between 2014 and 2015, which made $782 million worldwide despite a sharp decline in ticket sales; $418 million for “Part 1” dropped to $364 million for “Part 2.”

Where Warner Bros. and Yates delivered cinematic work worthy of a two-movie event, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate spurred their filmmakers to stumble over the finish line. “Breaking Dawn” director Bill Condon and “Mockingjay” director Francis Lawrence were lambasted for taking hugely popular series and making them feel overly long for the wrong reasons. (Note that Lawrence has since righted that wrong with an excellent “Hunger Games” prequel.)

“Twilight” was never considered the pinnacle of storytelling, but “Hunger Games” did particularly poorly trying to follow up the fervor of 2013’s “Catching Fire.” The series’ first sequel is still regarded by many as the best installment in the franchise, but the bloated two-part take is brutal to watch. There wasn’t enough source material to work with, and thanks to the novel’s dystopian setting, the second half felt almost too depressing for fantasy fans in packed theaters.

Why Hollywood May Never Learn This Lesson

Lionsgate doubled down on YA fiction in the early 2010s, pushing its adaptation of the “Divergent” series as another global event. Starring Shailene Woodley, the sci-fi franchise never made it to the finale, effectively imploding mid-story between parts. When 2015’s “Insurgent” underperformed at the same time “Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” faltered, that set up 2016’s “Allegiant: Part 1” for a fail. Bad reviews didn’t stop the movie from turning a profit (estimated at $71 million), but “Part 2” died in development as a drawn-out mistake.

That storied nosedive — or, at the least, the wisdom behind it — has kept the two-part doldrums at bay and out of box offices for most of the last decade. With more story than most filmmakers could handle, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” adaptation from 2021 and 2024 needed to be two parts to make sense. And it’ll be up to director Nia DaCosta to stick the landing on Danny Boyle’s original “28 Years” Later trilogy, which doesn’t adapt anything but, like Jon Chu’s new musical, prolongs a metaphor for fascism.

Yet the writing was on the wall when it came to “Wicked: For Good.” Universal turned what could have been one excellent “Wicked” movie into one great one and one really bad one. Exhausting and dark, the second half of this once-excellent adaptation may tarnish Chu’s legacy among fans, critics, and Academy voters. But with its ending left open to spinoffs, and history repeating itself on almost every other global stage, the wicked ways of the two-part finale strategy seem likely to ride again.

‘Wicked: For Good’: How to Watch Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s Musical Sequel at Home

by jummy84 November 24, 2025
written by jummy84

I’ve heard it said that Wicked: For Good has finally come into our lives a year after the release of part one. But you probably already know that, given the highly anticipated musical sequel has already surpassed the first Wicked movie with the biggest box office debut for a Broadway adaptation. It’s fair to say Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are pretty popular with the masses…Okay, I’ll stop with the Wicked pun in just a clock tick.

But what if you’ve already paid $20 (plus the cost of popcorn and a soda) during opening weekend or just don’t want to drive to the theater? Thank goodness there are plenty of ways to enjoy the Wizard of Oz origin story based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

Here’s how to watch Wicked: For Good—and everything you can actually stream at home—right now.

How to watch Wicked: For Good right now:

Wicked: For Good is now in movie theaters. You can check your local listings and buy tickets in advance on sites like Fandango, or directly through AMC and Regal.

When will Wicked: For Good be available to stream at home?

There has been no official announcement, though it will likely follow a similar timeline as the first film, which hit theaters on November 22, 2024, was available to purchase and rent on Amazon Prime on December 31 of that year, alongside a sing-along version, movie commentary, and plenty of bonus footage in the form of deleted scenes and a 40-minute documentary.

As for streaming, Wicked stans were able to watch the movie on Peacock as early as March 21, 2025.

Meanwhile, Wicked is easier to watch than ever right now.

Amazon Prime subscribers are now able to stream Wicked for free, along with all the aforementioned bonus footage. For those without a subscription, you can rent Wicked for $3.99 or purchase the film for $9.99 on Amazon Prime or Apple TV.

‘Wicked: For Good’ opens to a record $150 million

LOS ANGELES -“Wicked: For Good” brought in $150 million in the U.S. and Canada in its opening weekend, setting a record for a film adaptation of a Broadway musical and ranking among the best-performing musicals of all time, according to the studio.

The second half of the big-screen adaptation of “Wicked,” which reunites Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba with Ariana Grande’s Glinda, posted the third-best domestic opening weekend for a musical ever, behind Disney’s 2019 photorealistic computer-generated version of “The Lion King” and its 2017 remake of “Beauty and the Beast,” according to Universal Pictures and Comscore’s box office tallies.

“Wicked: For Good” also helped lift a moribund North American box office from a nine-week slump, where total ticket sales failed to reach $100 million, according to Comscore.

“It’s absolutely tremendous to see all the hard work that our filmmakers, Marc Platt and Jon Chu, and our extraordinary cast of Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey, put in for years, and to see it pay off so handsomely is just beyond satisfying,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic theatrical distribution.

Musicals don’t always appeal to movie-goers. Examples of modestly performing film adaptations of Broadway hits like “Dear Evan Hansen” and “In the Heights” outnumber cinematic blockbusters like the movie version of the ABBA musical, “Mamma Mia!”

RISKY TWO-FILM GAMBLE

The risky nature of stage-to-screen adaptations made industry analyst Daniel Loria initially question Universal Pictures’ decision to break the musical Wicked into two films.

“Most other studios would have made this one movie,” said Loria, senior vice president of content strategy for the Boxoffice Company, which provides data services for the industry. “The fact that you can squeeze out two blockbusters from the same IP, that’s a fantastic feat.”

Industry insiders credit the enduring appeal of the long-running Broadway musical, director Jon Chu’s inspired casting, and an aggressive marketing campaign for “Wicked’s” success.

“There’s something about it that resonates, particularly with younger viewers,” said Comscore’s box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “‘Wicked’ is to the younger generation what ‘The Sound of Music’ was to an older generation.”

Wicked For Good hits theatres this week; here’s how you can catch an early screening

Universal’s second chapter of the Wicked movie musical, titled Wicked: For Good, is headed to theaters on November 21, but the question already doing rounds among fans is how long will it take to appear on a streaming platform. As of now, the studio has not provided an official date yet, leaving people to look at last year’s release cycle for clues.

What is Wicked: For Good about?

The first film, released in November 2024, enjoyed a massive global box office, with collections of more than $756 million, according to Billboard. It is the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time. Wicked also won two Academy Awards out of the 10 nominations it received.

Director Jon Chu said the sequel picks up within minutes of the first film’s ending, with Elphaba rising into the air after “Defying Gravity.” From there, the tone shifts. Chu told Entertainment Weekly that Part Two deals with “consequences,” making this chapter heavier than the setup that came before it.

His line, “If Part 1 is about choices, (Part 2) is about consequences,” has become the shorthand for what to expect.

Does Wicked: For Good have new songs?

Two new songs appear this time: “No Place Like Home” (Cynthia Erivo) and “The Girl in the Bubble” (Ariana Grande), confirmed by composer Stephen Schwartz.

When will Wicked: For Good release online?

There’s no official streaming window for Wicked: For Good. No platform has been named either. But the first Wicked film premiered on Peacock roughly four months after its theatrical rollout. If Universal sticks to that pattern, the sequel would land online around early 2026, as per Florida Today.

Earlier this year, the first movie became free to stream on Amazon Prime Video with a subscription. It remains available for paid purchase on Apple TV+, YouTube, Fandango At Home, Comcast Xfinity, Cox and Microsoft Movies & TV.

Early screenings and release plans for Wicked: For Good

Before the wide debut on November 21, a set of advanced showings is taking place:

November 17: Amazon Prime early screening

November 19: IMAX, Dolby, Reale, ScreenX, 4DX, D-BOX

November 20: Double feature – Wicked + Wicked: For Good

Ariana Grande is back as Glinda, while Cynthia Erivo returns as Elphaba. The full cast list includes Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Keala Settle, Marissa Bode, Bronwyn James, Aaron Teoh and Colin Michael Carmichael.

Ariana Grande – Man Who Grabbed Singer on ‘Wicked: For Good’ Carpet Is Charged With “Public Nuisance” in Singapore

Singapore officials have charged the man who jumped a barricade and grabbed Ariana Grande during the “Wicked: For Good” red carpet event on Thursday. The incident, captured in multiple viral clips, shows 26-year-old Australian citizen Johnson Wen rushing toward the star, attempting to embrace her, and putting his arm around her. Grande appears stunned as her co-star Cynthia Erivo quickly intervenes, pulling Wen away with visible anger.

Wen — who posts on Instagram as @pyjamamann — was briefly detained following the confrontation. He later shared a message online saying, “@arianagrande @wickedmovie Dear Ariana Grande Thank You for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You.”

Authorities are treating the matter seriously. According to local court documents released Friday, Wen has been charged with “being a public nuisance.” If convicted, he faces up to three months in prison and a fine of as much as S$2,000 (approximately $1,540 USD). He is expected to return to court on Monday.

Wen has a history of similar disruptions. Videos on his Instagram account show him invading a Katy Perry show, a The Chainmakers concert, and several sporting events — including the 2023 FIFA World Cup Final — among many others.

The incident has sparked broad criticism, particularly given Grande’s past discussions about experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder following the May 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, which killed 22 people and injured hundreds.

Ariana Grande Accosted By Influencer At ‘Wicked: For Good’ Singapore Premiere

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

The Wicked: For Good press cycle has not been kind to Ariana Grande. The star was unable to make the movie premiere in São Paulo last week due to flight issues, and subsequently faced a wave of death threats from fans. Yesterday, she was walking the red carpet at the film’s Singapore premiere when she was accosted by the influencer who also stage-crashed Katy Perry in June.

Footage shows Pyjama Man, who has 10,000 followers on Instagram, jumping over a barricade and charging at the singer-actress, putting his arm around her and jumping up and down. Her costar Cynthia Erivo is famously very protective over her, and she intervened along with security to get the man off of Grande. The viral menace then posted the video to Instagram, writing, “@arianagrande @wickedmovie Dear Ariana Grande Thank You for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You.” He also made an Instagram Story saying he was free after being arrested.

Aside from the obvious fact that you shouldn’t put your hands on people, Grande is a particularly vulnerable victim considering the terrorist bombing at her Manchester concert in 2017 that left 22 dead.

Assaulting celebrities is unfortunately a trend as of late. Last month, Dua Lipa also endured an unwanted physical advance at her Los Angeles show that security prevented from going any further; Billie Eilish was grabbed and shoved at her Miami gig; an audience member rushed 2hollis onstage at his New York performance. Earlier this month in DC, Halsey was groped by a fan and security had to step in. Sad stuff.

A man charged at Ariana Grande while she walked the yellow brick road carpet at the Singapore premiere of her new movie Wicked: For Good on Thursday.

In footage of the interaction captured on TikTok, the man appears to have jumped over a barricade as Grande signed autographs while walking along the carpet at Universal Studios Singapore, alongside co-stars Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

The man then sprinted over to Grande and threw his arm around her, jumping up and down excitedly while waving at the crowd. Erivo quickly intervened, pulling them apart just before security stepped in and escorted him off the carpet.

Grande looked visibly shaken in the video and took a deep breath as Erivo hugged her once the man was gone.

The man, identified as Johnson Wen, calls himself a “prankster” on his TikTok account, where he shared the footage.

“Dear Ariana Grande Thanks for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You #wicked,” Wen wrote in his caption.

Perry was performing her hit song Hot N Cold at the Qudos Bank Arena when Wen rushed onto the stage and began dancing beside her.

The 41-year-old singer looked visibly shocked in a video shared to social media as the man tried to put his arm around her and jumped up and down on stage — similar to his actions with Grande.

Wen then started dancing by himself after Perry spun around to distance herself from him and continued to sing. As he performed the “floss” dance move, security approached him from both sides and escorted him off stage.

“There’s never going to be another show like this, so just enjoy it, Sydney,” Perry said into her microphone as security grabbed the man. “What the hell is going on?”

When asked how he keeps getting past security after the incident, Wen told Australia’s 9News it was “Magic. Just kidding, I’m just too quick.”

Wen said he has racked up an estimated $20,000 in fines over his stage-invading antics.

“I’m planning to like quit forever because you get in way too much trouble for it,” he added.

It’s not immediately clear if he’ll face charges for the incident in Singapore.

Ariana Grande & Ethan Slater, “Wicked” Co-Star She Allegedly Began Dating Before His Divorce, Remain Together Despite Breakup Rumors

Despite the internet chatter, love is still in the air for #ArianaGrande and #EthanSlater.

Insiders told TMZ that the #Wicked co-stars are still “absolutely together romantically.” Breakup speculation ramped up after the U.K. premiere of Wicked: For Good on Monday night (Nov. 10), where the pair posed on opposite sides during press photos. While media reports and fans pushed the idea of a split, the duo reportedly maintained affection behind the scenes; witnesses say they were seen “holding hands and being affectionate backstage.”

Their relationship has remained under scrutiny, with many questioning the timing of their romance and the status of their previous relationships. Ariana had recently finalized her divorce when things turned romantic, while Ethan was still married to #LillyJay. Public criticism intensified after Lilly addressed the alleged affair, saying, “[Ariana’s] the story, really. Not a girl’s girl. My family is just collateral damage.”

Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa joins Wicked star in animated musical

by jummy84 November 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Ncuti Gatwa’s post-Doctor Who career has just added another major project, with the acclaimed actor taking a voice role in a major new animated film co-starring Wicked icon Cynthia Erivo.

Bad Fairies is a fantastical adventure slated for release in summer 2027, which follows a group of “delightfully subversive” fairies as they “shake up their magical world” (via Deadline).

Erivo was confirmed to star in the animated musical last month, with Gatwa being the latest addition to what looks poised to be an A-list voice cast; details about his character have not yet been disclosed.

Bad Fairies is written by comedian Deborah Frances-White (The Guilty Feminist), with Megan Nicole Dong (Netflix’s Centuarworld) and Oliver Staphylas (Wish Dragon) sharing directing duties.

Tony Award-winning songwriters Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss (best known for King Henry VIII-themed Six: The Musical) are also aboard the project, alongside composer Isabella Summers (a founding member of indie band Florence + The Machine).

For Gatwa, it marks his first major screen booking since a widely publicised exit from Doctor Who, after which the actor returned to the stage for West End runs on The Importance of Being Earnest and Born with Teeth.

Most recently, he was seen alongside Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in romcom The Roses, and coming up next he has The Queen of Fashion; a biopic about stylist Isabella Blow, starring Andrea Riseborough (Alice & Jack) in the lead role.

No doubt Bad Fairies will be hoping to draw in Wicked-sized numbers on the strength of Erivo’s musical prowess.

After numerous theatre gigs, including Sister Act and The Colour Purple, the British actor moved into film from 2018 with roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, Widows and Harriet, where she was Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman.

However, Erivo’s film career has reached new heights in the past year, following her debut as Elphaba Thropp in the blockbuster film adaptation of Wicked.

The first film made more than $750 million at the global box office, with similarly high expectations for the forthcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, which is set to conclude the Wizard of Oz-inspired story later this month.

Further casting and plot details for Bad Fairies will be announced in due course.

Bad Fairies is coming to cinemas in May 2027.

Ariana Grande Faces Threats After Missing Brazil Premiere Of Wicked: For Good | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Ariana Grande is facing an unexpected wave of backlash after missing the first world premiere of Wicked: For Good in São Paulo, Brazil. The singer and actress shared that she was unable to attend because of a last-minute flight issue that made it unsafe for her aircraft to take off.

In an emotional Instagram Story, Ariana revealed that she and her team were grounded for safety reasons. She explained that her flight was delayed overnight and could not legally depart until the next morning. “I’m heartbroken I can’t be there,” she wrote, adding that she had tried every possible way to make it, even exploring alternate flights and private options, but none worked out in time.

The Wicked: For Good premiere went ahead with the rest of the cast, including Cynthia Erivo and director Jon M. Chu, celebrating in São Paulo. Ariana sent her love to fans and her co-stars, asking everyone to enjoy the moment even in her absence. “Please send all your love and energy to my Wicked family tonight,” she posted.

However, soon after the event, Ariana addressed something much darker. The pop star revealed that she had been receiving a stream of angry and threatening messages from a small section of fans online. In another Story, she wrote, “Please don’t wish danger on me, my team, or anyone. This is so unnecessary and hurtful.” She later deleted the message, but screenshots quickly circulated across social media.

According to reports, some users accused her of “abandoning” the Brazilian premiere despite her clear explanation. Fans and fellow celebrities quickly came to her defense, reminding others that no one should risk their safety for a red-carpet appearance.

This isn’t the first time Ariana has had to deal with online hostility while on tour or during film promotions. The artist, known for her close connection with fans, has often spoken about the emotional toll that social media negativity can take.

Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good continues its global rollout, with more premieres and appearances scheduled in the coming weeks. Ariana, who plays Glinda, is expected to attend upcoming events once travel resumes safely.

It’s a tough reminder of how online fandoms can blur the line between passion and pressure. Sometimes, empathy gets lost in the noise.

At the end of her note, Ariana simply said, “I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there, I love you all endlessly.”
