Taylor Swift: “Actually Romantic” Track Review

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

In 2010, Taylor Swift wrote the jaunty diss track “Mean,” about, strangely enough, Bob Lefsetz, a longtime music industry pundit who had viciously panned her performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards. For his part, Lefsetz initially hemmed and hawed over the narrative, but eventually came to embrace it. “Mean” does not stand amongst the best songs on Speak Now, but, as the music YouTuber Todd in the Shadows once pointed out, it is profoundly revealing about Swift’s psyche: “Someday, I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me.”

Flash forward to 2016. Swift was locked in a feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West over the lyrics to “Famous,” from West’s album The Life of Pablo. She was on the verge of claiming the moral high ground when Kardashian dropped her ace in the hole: video footage of Swift seeming to approve—and even laugh over—the lyric “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.” Swift went on to release “Look What You Made Me Do” as the first single from 2017’s Reputation. The whole affair felt tawdry and camp without being whatsoever fun, but at least she was punching sideways.

It’s 2025 now, Taylor Swift is the biggest pop star on the planet—Time’s Person of the Year big, repeatedly breaking her own sales records with every new release big—and she (allegedly, seemingly) can’t stop thinking about Charli XCX. “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave,” she sings on “Actually Romantic,” one of the lowlights off her new album, The Life of a Showgirl. For those somehow mercifully out of the loop, Charli XCX just married the 1975’s George Daniel, bandmate of Swift’s recent ex Matty Healy; on the Brat cut “Sympathy is a knife,” she grappled with being thrust into the orbit of a female pop star several times her stature. “Actually Romantic” is just, well, mean. And worse, it’s dumb: “Like a toy chihuahua barking at me from a tiny purse, that’s how much it hurts.” No working it out on the remix to be had here.

Taylor Swift: “Father Figure” Track Review

by jummy84 October 4, 2025
written by jummy84

For the past few years, it’s felt like Taylor Swift’s goal has been expansion at any cost. For longtime fans, the price of Swift becoming the world’s biggest pop star is clear: On The Life of a Showgirl, her 12th album, the pinpoint specificity that defined her best work has all but evaporated, replaced by flaccid podcast-related sexual innuendo and clunker words like “legitly.”

“Father Figure” throws the shift into stark relief. Picking up on ideas of fame, power, and respectability that she explored to great effect on folklore’s “The Last Great American Dynasty” and The Tortured Poets Department’s “Clara Bow”—a thread that leads all the way back to “The Lucky One,” from Red—“Father Figure” is a rare flash of reality amid Showgirl’s cartoony odes to tradwifery and Gucci-clad bad girls.

It is, arguably, Swift’s most straightforward appraisal of her own power: Casting herself as a steely mafioso, she sings about the financial benefit of being even a minor player in the Swiftiverse and casually bemoans the fact that, no matter how much money you might make for someone, you can never guarantee their fealty. “Father Figure” works because—unlike so many of Swift’s songs about broken friendships or business partnerships—any bitterness is hidden many layers deep, beneath actual jokes (“I can make deals with the devil/Because my dick’s bigger”) and chilly, spectral production that sounds like Beach House by way of Carly Rae Jepsen.

“Father Figure” will be pored over for Easter eggs—I have already seen fans fighting over whether it’s about Scott Borchetta or Olivia Rodrigo—which misses the point by a mile: Musically deft and lyrically economical in a way that the rest of Showgirl isn’t, the sweetly sinister “Father Figure” suggests that there might still be a sharper, more interrogative Swift waiting in the wings for when the showgirl’s time is up.

Cardi B Reignites BIA Feud In Scathing New Diss Track “Pretty & Petty”

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B‘s long-awaited sophomore album Am I The Drama? is proving the title is more than just a rhetorical question. The 23-track project arrived today (Sept. 19), and already has fans dissecting the lyrics and matching subliminals to names.

On the track “Pretty & Petty,” Cardi reignited her 2024 “beef” with Boston rapper BIA, claiming that the “London” rhymer doesn’t have five songs that people could name, nor a “look” that Cardi would want for herself.

“Name five BIA songs, gun pointed to your head/ Bow, I’m dead,” she rapped before also spitting, “I’d rather die on the surgery table/ Before I gotta walk around here lookin’ like you.”

Bia attends Beautycon™ Los Angeles 2023 at The Reef on September 17, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

Proverbially, Cardi twisted the knife even deeper, taunting that promoters only book “Diarrhea Bia” when “they can’t afford Coi [Leray],” and even questioned if BIA has a BET Award to her name. Cardi has 21, by the way, including both BET Hip-Hop and Social awards.

She then brought Diddy into the mix, lyrically asking BIA: “Why you always at Diddy house?/ I heard they combed that lil’ kitty out/ Tell these folks what’s it’s really about.”

And just when it seemed like the jabs couldn’t get any lower, The “Bodega Baddie” rapped, “I’m a bad bi**h and you mad/ ’Cause you built like your dad.”

The feud traces back to March 2024, when fans suggested Cardi was copying BIA’s style, something BIA seemingly co-signed with a “woozy” emoji on X.

Cardi later addressed it head-on in her verse on Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla’s “Wanna Be (Remix)” by spitting, “Guess I’m a teacher since you wanna sub me… Bi**h please, don’t nobody wanna be ya (BIA).”

BIA wasted no time firing back in an untitled track where she accused Cardi of infidelity and questioned her pen game. “Put it on your hubby since you love lyin’ on your vows… I’ll be damned if I let an ni**a f**k a bi**h inside my house,” she spit. She also shaded Cardi’s multiple surgeries as “mid” and her speaking skills as “second-grade level.”

In response to cheating allegations, Cardi went the legal route, warning in an IG Live video, “I’m a sue you and you got to come with receipts. And not social media receipts, court receipts,” she said. “I will get every little f**kin’ red penny that you ever f**kin’ make, bi**h.”

Bia simply quipped, “SUE ME ??? That’s not Hip-Hop.”

Take a listen to Cardi’s new diss track “Pretty & Petty” above.

Vicky Jain And Samarth Jurel Dances To Popular Track of ‘Hera Pheri 2’ After Vicky Getting 45 Stitches On His Hand

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Vicky Jain and Samarth Jurel, known for their camaraderie on reality shows like “Laughter Chefs” and “Bigg Boss,” once again grabbed attention with their playful bond. The duo, who share a brother-like relationship, were recently seen celebrating actress Ayesha Khan’s birthday, where a hilarious video from the party has been making waves on Instagram. In the clip, Vicky and Samarth are seen dancing in a quirky “handicapped” style to a popular track from Hera Pheri 2, leaving fans in splits.

Vicky Jain

Viewers couldn’t stop laughing as both rolled on the floor with uncontrollable energy, while Samarth received most of the credit for the fun. The laughter came despite Vicky’s recent mishap. He had suffered a serious accident that left him with 45 stitches on his right hand after pieces of glass pierced his skin. Vicky was hospitalized for treatment, and updates about his condition were first shared by Samarth Jurel and later confirmed by a close friend of Vicky’s wife, actress Ankita Lokhande.

Thankfully, Vicky has now recovered enough to return home. Without wasting time, he joined his friends to celebrate Ayesha’s birthday and even posted cheerful videos of the evening on his Instagram story. The video starts with glimpses of Reem Sheikh and Aparna Dixit before shifting to a playful “boys versus girls” theme. The reel humorously compares how a girl is pampered after an accident, while a boy continues to enjoy life carefree. To add to the comic effect, Samarth tucked one arm inside his shirt to create the illusion of missing a hand, letting the sleeve dangle loosely.

Meanwhile, Vicky matched his friend’s energy by dancing with his injured hand wrapped in the same style. Their antics carried a caption that read, “Find happiness in every situation,” perfectly capturing the spirit of the moment. Several celebrities, including Reshu Jain, Garvita Sadhwani, Naira Banerjee, Anjali Arora, and Kanika Mann, reacted with laughing emojis and praised the video’s lighthearted vibe. Fans, too, flooded the comments section, applauding Samarth’s creativity and the duo’s infectious sense of humor.

GloRilla Takes Aim At Young Thug, Mariah The Scientist On Diss Track

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

GloRilla took it to the booth in reply to insulting remarks from Young Thug, revealed during a leaked jail call last week.

In response to the recording, where Thugger refers to the Memphis artist as “ugly,” GloRilla has dropped a diss track targeting the Atlanta rapper over Hot Styles’ 2008 “Lookin’ A** Ni**a” beat.

The track starts off with Glo jokingly calling herself “Brianna,” as the Business Is Business rapper called her that as he scoffed at the thought of people comparing her to Rihanna.

Glo goes on to compare Young Thug’s — or “Young Bug” as she calls him — looks to everything from a “Black and Mild” to a “Jamaican Vegeta,” also taking shots at his fashion sense and the more feminine ‘fits he’s rocked over the years.

“Cut shirt wearin’ a** ni**a, skirt wearin’ a** ni**a
A bug on the ‘Gram ’bout to chirp lookin’ a** ni**a
A pain in the a** tryna hump lookin’ a** ni**a
A ho in the mirror ’bout to twerk lookin’ a** ni**a
.”

She also references the fact the Young Thug attempted to flirt with her before the recordings revealed what he said about her looks.

Young Thug wasn’t the only target, however, as his girlfriend, Mariah The Scientist, also caught a few shots for entertaining Thugger’s insults over the phone. Glo took a few playful jabs, like comparing the singer to a “sexy Winnie The Pooh,” but also called out Mariah’s seeming willingness to put up with cheating and general disrespect from the “Parade On Cleveland” rapper.

“Birdie and the freak lookin’ a** bit*h
Brain size of a pea lookin’ a** bit*h
I don’t care if he cheat lookin’ a** bit*h
Long as he come home to me lookin’ a** bitch (Ha, haha).”

Many have noted that GloRilla and Mariah The Scientist hit the stage together as recently as June for Hot 107.9’s Birthday Bash in Atlanta, adding an interesting layer to both the song and their friendship.

Despite dishing out a few bars aimed at the couple, Glo was also sure to state that the track is “all fun and games,” and that she doesn’t have any hard feelings. Check out the track below.

After the initial phone call was leaked, Young Thug took to X to apologize to the “TGIF” rapper, writing, “@GloTheofficial first of all I’m sorry to u for my words and I honestly don’t think ur ugly at all, I was speaking from jail just having a hard time with life.. I don’t like bashing girls and hardly ever did.. I’m sorry to u twin.”

20 International Titles to Track

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Led by Cillian Murphy starring “Steve,” which sparked rave reviews, nine of the 10 titles at Toronto’s Platform are non-U.S., a sign of Toronto’s ever more vigorous focus on international titles in the run-up to the launch of a market next year. Multiple Platform titles could have Variety’s list of 20-Plus Titles to Track. Profiled on Saturday, however, they are not included in the cut. Two of the highest profile non-U.S. titles – “Couture;” starring a French-speaking Angelina Jolie, and “Bad Apples,” have already been profiled in Variety’s TIFF: 15 Buzzy Films From Chris Evans, Angelina Jolie, Michaela Coel and More That Have Buyers Circling. They are included but cross-referenced. Otherwise,

“Amoeba,” (Tan Silyou, Singapore, Netherlands, France, Spain, South Korea, Discovery,)

Inspired by the colonial Singapore gangsters rulers, four girls, at a modern-day regimented elite secondary school form their own gang cam-recording petty acts of rebellion, led by firebrand freethinking lesbian Choo Xin Yu. But how farewell their rebellion really go when academic conformity is the key to get into top-notch colleges? “I set out to make a gang film, a prickly love letter to Singapore that questions the national narrative via four schoolgirls resisting repression with resilience and friendship,” says Tan Silyou. A spirited iconoclastic feature debut attracting an impressive multilateral production partners.   96

“Bad Apples,” (Jonatan Etzler, U.K.)

See Variety’s Sep. 5 article, TIFF: 15 Buzzy Films From Chris Evans, Angelina Jolie, Michaela Coel and More That Have Buyers Circling.

“The Captive,” (Alejandro Amenábar, Spain, Spain, Italy)

1575, Algiers. A young Miguel de Cervantes, who went on to write “Don Quixote,” the world’s first modern novel, languishes in a jail, captured by Ottoman corsairs, where he discovers his gift for storytelling. Starring Julio Peña (“Berlin”), a broad audience jail break adventure movie and Cervantes origins story as a writer and man which marks the latest from Academy Award winning Amenábar (“The Others,” “The Sea Inside”) and one of the biggest movies from Europe world premiering at Toronto. With Netflix acquiring Spain and select foreign territories, “The Captive” has scored a healthy bevy of pre-sales for Global Constellation, including France with Haut et Court.

“The Condor Daughter,” (Álvaro Olmos Torrico, Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay, Centrepiece)

One of the buzziest titles screened in rough-cut at 2024’s Ventana Sur, and written-directed-produced by Empatia Cinema’s  Olmos Torrico, a helmer-scribe producer in Bolivia’s cinema vanguard. An identity drama, Quechua Clara, 16, her midwife mother Ana’s assistant, Clara leaves her high Andes village to become a big city chincha singer. Ana seeks her out in the city, as, animals doing, crops drying, her village is losing its population. A mother-daughter relationship drama set against rural depopulation knit and stunning, sweeping high Andes. Part of a highly select slate at Bendita Films Sales. 98

“Couture,” (Alice Winocour, U.S., France)

See Variety’s Sep. 5 article, TIFF: 15 Buzzy Films From Chris Evans, Angelina Jolie, Michaela Coel and More That Have Buyers Circling.

“Dry Leaf,” (Alexandre Koberidze, Germany, Georgia)

Catnip for Locarno main competition and at the more out-there end of the spectrum for Toronto, the third film from Koberidze after the breakout ““What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?” is shot on an Sony Ericsson cameraphone, discontinued in 2011. Picked up by Cinema Guild for North America,  “Dry Leaf” was hailed at Locarno by Variety as “a gorgeously eccentric road trip through blurry rural Georgia. Pixelated images tell a pixilated story as Alexander Koberidze’s bizarre and wonderful three-hour feature plays hide-and-seek with reality and memory across the soccer-mad nation of Georgia.

“Egghead Republic,” (Pella Kågerman, Hugo Lilja, Sweden, Discovery, TIFF Next Wave Selects)

One more example that political satire is back, baby – and weirder than ever. Kågerman and Lilja(“Aniara”) pick up Arno Schmidt’s novel and head to a radioactive zone, a no-go area ever since an atomic bomb fell on Soviet Kazakhstan. According to a controversial writer “you cannot tell a story without experiencing it yourself,” so a group of journos – and their unpaid interns – won’t be stopped by little radiation. Soon, they drink from cactuses, kiss topless centaurs and repeat after Tarkovsky’s Stalker: “Welcome to the Zone.”

“Franz,” (Agnieszka Holland, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Special Presentations, Luminaries)

A legendary director takes on a legendary writer Franz Kafka, following the punch in the face that was “Green Border.” The results are surprisingly playful. While stunningly shot, this is no usual biopic, with Holland more interested in nightmares than the who, what, when, where and why of a story. She “interviews” the characters on-camera, heads to present-day Kafka Museum and admits her troubled protagonist (newcomer Idan Weiss) would eventually change the world with his writing, but also demand change from a beggar. “An unconventional biopic that’s more puzzle than portrait,”says Variety, as Films Boutique continues to announce early sales.

“The Furious,” (Tanigaki Kenji, Hong Kong, China, Midnight Madness)

Tanigaki Kenji — the veteran fight choreographer behind “SPL,” “Flash Point” and “Twilight of the Warriors” — takes a turn in the director’s chair with “The Furious.” Produced by Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), the film follows Xie Miao as a father forced to unleash his combat instincts when his daughter is kidnapped, aided by Joe Taslim of “The Raid.” With Tanigaki’s signature mix of bone-crunching choreography and unrelenting pace, the film is a visceral showcase of martial arts cinema at its most uncompromising, the kind that genre fans – and buyers – will want to track closely. XYZ Films handles sales.

“Girl,” (Shu Qi, Taiwan, Centrepiece)

Growing up isn’t easy in Taiwanese screen icon Shu Qi’s debut film as a director – she recently starred in Cannes pick “Resurrection” – it’s all about disappointment and fear. Hsiao-lee’s abusive parents constantly keep her on the edge. She tries her best to disappear, until she meets Li-li. Her new friend isn’t quiet – Li-li is all about joyous rebelling and she’s tempted to join her. It’s the 1980s and her country is changing. Fed up with the silence, she’s hoping she can transform her life, too. Sold by Mandarin Vision Co and Goodfellas, “a heartfelt but scrappy debut,” says Variety. MB

“Ky Nam Inn,” (Leon Le, Vietnam, Special Presentations)

Food has rarely looked better than in this romantic film set in post-war Saigon. That’s how a young translator – working on “The Little Prince” – and a widow start to get close, chopping away and preparing delightful meals. But people are always watching, especially their neighbors, so quick to judge even the purest emotions. Fully embracing charms of retro-ish melodrama, director Leon Le is attracted to kindness, but these are not kind times that he’s portraying. Then again, are any? MB

“Laundry” (Zamo Mkhwanazi, Switzerland, South Africa, Discovery)

Set in apartheid South Africa and inspired by the story of Mkhwanazi’s own family, this drama hits hard – but also delivers the joy of music and the gloss of 1990s historical epics. Teenage Khuthala wants to become a musician – his father would like him to inherit their family business instead. Generational struggles give way to something much more sinister, however, as the world they’re living in would rather take away everything. The debuting director believes in dreams, that’s clear. She also knows that not everyone is allowed to have them.

“I Swear,” (Kirk Jones, U.K.)

In 1983, in Scotland’s Galashiels, John Davidson, 15, begins to feel the first symptoms of Tourette Syndrome when there was still little awareness of the illness. Davidson’s turning point came 13 years later when he meets a neighbor, Lottie, a mental health nurse, who has a clear and compassionate understanding of his condition. “I Swear” charts Davidson’s journey to there and beyond in one of Toronto’s great crowdpleasers from Jones (“Waking Ned Devine”) packing an enormously empathetic performance by Robert Aramayo (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”). “Another Super Hero film, but this hero is human, lives in Scotland and has been living with Tourette’s since he was 15 years old,” says Jones. It has already been pre-sold healthily to multiple major territories by Bankside.

“Noviembre,” Tomás Corredor (Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Norway)

Colombian directors – Gala del Sol, Simon Mesa Soto in just 2025 – are winning top-tier fest recognition. Add Corredor to the list. Gripping but reflective, “November” revisits the Nov. 1985 siege of the Palace of Justice, but from the POV of guerrilla fighters, judges and civilians trapped in one of its bathrooms, battling  their fears, driven by a desperate desire to survive. “‘November’ explores human fragility faced by an unmanageable reality: Imminent death. It’s about resistance,” Corredor tells Variety. Lead-produced by two of Latin America’s classiest producer, Colombia’s Burning and Mexico’s Piano, picked up by Cineplex for sales and Prime Video.

“Our Father” ( GoranStankovic, Serbia, Italy, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Discovery)

Stankovic’s intense drama – based on true events – mixes religion with violence as recovering addicts head to an isolated monastery. They have already run out of options, or so they think – according to Father Branko (Boris Isaković), “when a man is willing to repent, he can find peace.” He believes in tough love; in religious ardor and horrifying physical punishment these tough men, apparently, subconsciously crave. When they hear him say, “you know the drill,” they submit. But their bodies can only take so much. Picked up by Croatia-based sales outfit Split Screen, the latest from Stankovic, creator of Canneseries winner “Operation Sabre.” MB

“Rose of Nevada,” (Mark Jenkin, U.K. Special Presentations)

Starring George MacKay (“1917”) and Callum Turner (“Masters of the Air”) and bowing at Venice Horizons, the third feature from Jenkin whose 2019 debut “Bait” proved a indie breakout. Something of a commercial turn but still shot in 16mm, a time-looping ghost ship horror fantasy hailed by Variety as a “bewitching, time-surfing voyage.”It added: “Cornish indie auteur Mark Jenkin’s third feature combines the analog throwback approach of his debut ‘Bait’ with the genre experimentation of his follow-up ‘Enys Men,’ to thoroughly satisfying effect.” Sold by Protagonist Pictures.

“Unidentified,” (Haifaa Al Mansour, Saudi Arabia, Centrepiece)

From the groundbreaking Al Mansour, whose “Wadjda” was the first feature shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, “Unidentified” now weighs in as one of the most eagerly anticipated movies from the Arab after Sony Pictures Classics acquired North and Latin America, Eastern Europe and Australia with Paradise City Film selling out most elsewhere. In it, Noelle Al Saffan, a police department receptionist, pushes back against sexism  and police indifference investigating the discovery of the lifeless body of a teen girl in the desert. “The mystery-thriller ‘Unidentified’ is exactly the type of compelling movie that’s thriving in the theatrical marketplace right now,” SPC has said.

Sushin Shyam Flags Netflix Over Uncredited Use of Aavesham Track in Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Teaser

Malayalam composer Sushin Shyam, who gave Aavesham its pulsating soundscape, has publicly raised concerns after hearing his track The Last Dance in the teaser of Netflix’s new animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The track, originally created with rapper Hanumankind, plays prominently in the action-packed promo, but neither artiste was credited.

A Familiar Beat, An Absent Credit

The teaser quickly went viral, but for Malayalam cinema fans, the music was unmistakable. Sushin drew attention to the omission in typically wry fashion, commenting beneath the official YouTube upload: “Thanks Netflix for featuring my track! Would’ve been even cooler if my name had made it to the credits too.” His words sparked a wider discussion online about how regional creators often slip through the cracks when their work is repurposed for global platforms. As of now, neither Netflix nor Ubisoft, which owns the Splinter Cell franchise, has issued a statement.

Milestones Beyond the Controversy

The composer, however, has also had reasons to celebrate. Recently, Sushin described experiencing his “first real fanboy moment” when AR Rahman followed him on Instagram, a gesture he said left him overwhelmed and grateful. On the personal front, Sushin tied the knot last year, while professionally he has been on a short breather since delivering back-to-back hits with Manjummel Boys and Aavesham.

Still, he hasn’t been idle. July saw him drop Ray, his first independent single, marking a step into non-film music. And on the horizon are two big projects: Balan: The Boy, directed by Chidambaram and written by Aavesham filmmaker Jithu Madhavan, and Torpedo, filmmaker Tharun Moorthy’s next, starring Fahadh Faasil, Naslen, Arjun Das and Ganapathi.

The Bigger Picture

Sushin’s blunt yet humorous response highlights a larger debate: when regional music travels beyond borders, are its creators given their due? While The Last Dance finding space in a high-profile Netflix production is undeniably a milestone, the lack of credit raises uncomfortable questions about visibility and fairness. For now, the incident has amplified Sushin’s voice beyond Kerala and reaffirmed the growing global appetite for music born in Indian cinema.
