Programmers Track a New Wave of Arab Filmmakers at Cairo Film Festival

by jummy84 November 16, 2025
written by jummy84

At the 46th edition of the Cairo Intl. Film Festival, programmers from some of the world’s leading festivals are finding something they rarely encounter elsewhere on the circuit: a festival where the energy in the market mirrors the energy in theaters. As regional co-production models expand and the Cairo Film Connection strengthens the festival’s profile as a project incubator, Cairo is emerging as a key site not only for discovering new voices but also for understanding what matters to Arab filmmakers right now.

This year’s expanded Cairo Film Connection, held as part of Cairo Industry Days, signals the festival’s growing weight as a regional hub. With financing structures shifting across Middle East and North Africa and more funds opening conversations with local producers, programmers are watching how Cairo’s evolving market ecosystem could shape the films that eventually land in Europe and beyond. For filmmaker/writer-director Anas Sareen (“The Gods”), Berlinale Generation programmer and CIFF short-film juror, the opportunity lies in the next wave of filmmakers rising through these pipelines. “These structures push emerging filmmakers forward,” he notes, adding that what resonates most is meeting filmmakers “whose sincerity shows in the work.”

Céline Routan, director of programming at Palm Springs ShortFest and a NETPAC juror in Cairo, whose background includes programming roles within SXSW, IDFA and TIFF ShortCuts, views Cairo’s industry expansion as part of a broader regional realignment. The shift, she emphasizes, is not only financial. “It’s important for filmmakers to rely on partners from the region,” she explains. “When producers share the same context, the collaboration starts from a place of understanding.”

If the industry draws programmers in, it’s Cairo’s audience that defines the festival’s character. Both Sareen and Routan point to something that sets CIFF apart from Doha, Red Sea and other major regional festivals: a deeply invested local audience that fills screenings.

“Every seat is filled,” Routan notes. “You don’t come here to play to an empty room. Cairo audiences go to the movies, they react, they debate. It really matters to them.”

Watching films with an Egyptian audience, Routan adds, reveals narrative nuances that may not surface elsewhere. The ideal film, as she frames it, is authentic to its own world while still allowing international audiences a way in, not designed for Western gatekeepers but not shutting them out either.

Sareen, attending Cairo for the first time, feels the distinction begins with the city itself. “Cairo is cinema,” he reflects. “Everywhere you look feels like the beginning of a story.” The city’s cinematic lineage, from its foundational role in Arab filmmaking to figures like Youssef Chahine, continues to shape how programmers engage with the films presented today. Cairo’s longevity as the region’s oldest FIAPF-accredited festival, he adds, brings an institutional memory newer festivals can’t duplicate. “It has managed to position itself as a leading place over many years.”

That foundation now meets a generational shift. Routan points to a rise in films by women and Gen Z directors, reflecting changes in training, access and regional funding. More notable to her is a confidence among filmmakers telling stories intended first for local audiences rather than optimizing for international palatability. “More films are unapologetically themselves,” she notes.

Some of that confidence is already visible in this year’s lineup. Routan points to shorts like “First the Blush Then the Habit,” the kind of film she’s eyeing for Palm Springs, for its precision and strong sense of voice. On the feature side, she points to “Flana,” by Iraqi filmmaker Zahraa Ghandour, which has already screened in Toronto and IDFA, as part of a wave of well-crafted regional films moving fluidly between Arab and international festivals.

Sareen sees a parallel movement among diaspora filmmakers reconnecting with the region. Many, he observes, are returning with new perspectives shaped by displacement or migration. “There’s a generation trying to shed new light on our cultures,” he notes, pointing to an emerging pan-Arab filmmaking sensibility he finds particularly exciting.

Some themes, however, remain unavoidable. “It’s impossible not to talk about Palestine,” Sareen reflects. “It’s a responsibility filmmakers feel, and they’re proud to take it on.” Conflicts in Sudan and across the region carry similar weight. Politics, he emphasizes, is not a branding device for Arab cinema but a lived reality that inevitably informs the work. Yet filmmakers are equally intent on not being defined solely by it.

Short films often register these tensions most quickly. With their rapid production timeline, Routan views shorts as a sharper pulse of the moment: “They reflect the state of the world faster than features,” she emphasizes. But urgency alone doesn’t justify selection; the filmmaking must stand on its own.

Both programmers consider Cairo a genuine launchpad. Distributors watch how Egyptian audiences respond, and programmers use CIFF as a scouting ground for films that may later reach Palm Springs, Berlin, or other key festivals. “The industry is here,” Routan says. “Films can be picked up, and filmmakers can build connections that matter.”

NLE Choppa Says NBA YoungBoy Diss Track “KO” Is Speaking To What Has Possession Of Him’

Despite what it might look like, #NLEChoppa says he has nothing but love for #NBAYoungBoy.

The 23-year-old sat down with Rolling Stone to clarify where things really stand between him and NBA YoungBoy, 26, and explain why he released a diss track aimed at the Make No Sense artist in the first place. “In the past, it’s already been escalated. Personally, if I was to speak outside of what I’m ordered to do, personally, we’ve already had issues. But I can’t say that these issues have zero reason as to why I made this record,” NLE said. He continued, saying his record is “more so speaking to something that’s controlling [YoungBoy.] It’s speaking to what has possession of him, and I love him.”

NLE recently dropped “KO,” a track that seems to take several shots at #YoungBoy’s music and persona. He continued in his interview, “I would love to give that brother a hug. I would love to shake hands with that brother, I would love to make music with him personally, but how could I if he won’t? But do I have worries about things being personal outside of this? I feel he got bigger fish to fry. I’m just playing a small role in it by using my voice.”

Was #NLE’s record just a message of tough love?

The makers of the upcoming supernatural horror film Kaal Trighori have released its official title track, Mantra Aavahan (आवाहन), which introduces the film’s ensemble cast. The horror thriller, starring Arbaaz Khan, Rituparna Sengupta, Aditya Srivastava, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rajesh Sharma, and Mugdha Godse, is set to release in theatres on November 14, 2025.

Kaal Trighori Official Title Track Mantra Aavahan Out

Directed by Nitin Vaidya, the song offers haunting visuals featuring a mysterious voodoo doll and a black magic ritual. The eerie visuals raise a chilling question — is this a carefully orchestrated trap rooted in ancient supernatural myths, or is something far more sinister unfolding?

Director Nitin Vaidya On Mantra Aavahan

Sharing about how the cast was intrigued and deeply moved by the story, director Nitin Vaidya said, “The story itself became my strongest pitch — whenever I personally narrated it to an actor, they were deeply moved and immediately agreed to be a part of Kaal Trighori. Working with all of them has been an unforgettable experience; each one is not only an exceptional performer but also a wonderful human being. I truly cherish the bond we built during this film.”

Kaal Trighori is produced by Shirish Vaidya, Nitin Ghataliya, and Mansukh Talsaniya, with Rahul Vaidya serving as the executive producer.

50 Cent’s A.I. Diss Track Could Mark A New Frontier In Rap Beef

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

50 Cent is notorious for welcoming all challengers in petty clashes, but the mogul recently utilized a new tool for his verbal art of war: artificial intelligence.

On Tuesday (Oct. 28), 50 Cent dropped a calculated social-media salvo: he uploaded photos of himself aboard a private jet on Instagram, paired with a short clip featuring a soulful A.I.-generated song aimed at Jim Jones, with a playful dig at fellow G-Unit member Tony Yayo.

In the brief audio clip, a male-sounding A.I. vocal opens by expressing Fif’s disappointed in Yayo’s delayed response to Jim Jones, who called Yayo “broke” and criticized the rapper’s hygiene during a recent podcast interview.

“50’s mad because Yayo let Jimmy talk tough and he ain’t answer back,” the voice sings while scenes of Fif and Yayo boarding a private jet plays in the clip.

“How you let that fake blood talk to you like that/ Somebody gotta pay/ Or no more jet flights/ Back to first class,” the faux song continues, with a chorus of A.I. background vocals furthering taking additional shots at the Harlem rep.

“Jimmy ain’t tough/ Jimmy ain’t like that/ How you let that crack baby say you smoke crack.” The private-jet backdrop dramatizes the “somebody gotta pay” and “or no more jet flights” lines.

The second stanza of the track includes slick wordplay referencing Uncle Murda’s annual “Rap Up” recap, as well as calls for Cam’ron to intervene and put an end to Jones’ pointed comments.

“Murda, rap ’em up, it’s a motherf**king wrap/ Don’t make me have to get the strap/ I’m calling Cam/ Come get ‘cha mans” before the clip ends.

To fully grasp the context: the simmering discord between 50 Cent, Cam’ Ron and Jim Jones stretches back to the mid-2000s.

Jim Jones

Cam’ Ron has publicly addressed how the original conflict manifested when Jones appeared on stage with 50 during Cam’s beef era on several occasion.

“We were having interior problems at Dipset. … So when me and [50 Cent] were battling, you had members of Dipset to come to your show,” Cam recalled during Fif’s appearance on his Talk WIth Flee podcast in December 2024.

“When ni**as went on stage, I was like, ‘This sh*t is spinning out [of control]. It was a checkmate moment,’” he admitted.

Jones would take umbrage to Cam and Fif mentioning his name during the podcast, responding on Justin LaBoy’s Respectfully podcast shortly after, sparking a drawn out back and forth between all parties involved.

Now, 50 Cent’s use of A.I. to craft a soul-song diss signals a modern evolution of his trolling strategy — merging social-media visuals, private-jet flexing and technology-driven audio to humiliate Jim Jones while aligning himself again with Cam’ Ron’s camp. The result: a next-level one-two in a decades-old New York rap war.

Rosalía: “Berghain” Track Review | Pitchfork

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Rosalía doesn’t do small gestures. The Spanish pop maverick’s follow-up to MOTOMAMI was always going to be an event, and then she posted a video with the London Symphony Orchestra. “Berghain,” the lead single from her forthcoming new album Lux, is all spectacle. Never before has Rosalía flexed her classical training this hard: composing in three languages, turning in a performance that’s almost all coloratura. “Berghain” feels as ambitious as Lux’s supposed four-movement structure, cantering from violin fireworks à la Vivaldi’s “Winter” to a pummeling “The Rite of Spring” grand finale. Yves Tumor is here—to usher us into the final act—as is Björk, whose own gale force presence threatens to knock the song on its side like a two-dimensional façade.

Then there’s the matter of the titular Berlin nightclub. Last year, French-Lebanese DJ Arabian Panther accused Berghain of cancelling a scheduled performance due to his pro-Palestine views. Controversy is built in with Rosalía—a Spaniard who sang in an Andalusian accent on 2018’s El Mal Querer and became a superstar making reggaeton—but “Berghain” never quite earns its provocation.

MEOVV have returned with the fiery new track ‘Burning Up’ – check it out below.

Released yesterday (October 14), the dance-y track sees the five-piece experiment with pulsating kicks, classic Jersey club beats and soaring synths that build to an incendiary dance break as they chant: “It’s like a wildfire, I’mma stay right by ya / Come take me up higher / Let it, let it, let it, let it burn.”

The track was co-written by MEOVV members Gawon and Narin, as well as THEBLACKLABEL hitmakers including founder/producer Teddy Park, malachiii, Teal Douville, 24 and more.

The music video sees the group through various settings as they deal with a heatwave. As the video proceeds, the girls find creative ways to combat the heat, including purposely setting fire sprinklers off in a restaurant and more.

‘Burning Up’ marks the group’s first Korean release since dropping their debut EP ‘My Eyes Open VVide’ earlier this year. That EP consists of the tracks ‘HANDS UP’, ‘DROP TOP’, ‘MEOW’, ‘BODY’, ‘TOXIC’ and ‘LIT RIGHT NOW’.

MEOVV, which comprises members Sooin, Gawon, Anna, Narin and Ella, debuted in September last year with their first digital single ‘Meow’ under The Black Label. The agency currently houses artists like Big Bang’s Taeyang, Somi and BLACKPINK vocalist Rosé.

Oklou: “viscus” [ft. FKA twigs] Track Review

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Pregnancy changed Oklou’s mind as well as her body. “I feel like my consciousness has naturally, without me even trying, gotten rid of any source of stress and anxiety,” she told FKA twigs when the two artists spoke for Highsnobiety earlier this year. On “viscus,” from the forthcoming deluxe edition of Oklou’s debut album, choke enough, the French electronic pop star-in-the-making meets one of her direct influences in the ether. At first, the track sounds right at home among the album’s filigreed miniatures, but then the tinny percussion, vaporwave synthesisers, and chamber orchestration begin to interlock at new angles, forming a glittering exoskeleton.

As she told Pitchfork in our cover story, Oklou’s creative process runs on late-night Logic sessions and long periods of isolation. “viscus” yearns to swap digital ideas for real bodies. “I get lost so deep inside me,” Oklou intones—perhaps a characteristically oblique nod to the chronic stomachaches that she and twigs had bonded over. “The body is a temple/Am I worshipping too hard?” When twigs’ voice enters, it’s from the other side of the stereo mix, beckoning us from the cloud down to the club. Oklou has said that she used to dance far more than she does today; on “viscus,” we hear those muscles start to engage again.
