“Give me a year of your life for freeing you. I’ll put your skills to good use.” Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Japanese action thriller called Samurai Fury, which is just the simplistic English title. The film’s original title in Japan is Muromachi Outsiders or 室町無頼 (Muromachi Burai) because of the story: this historical action epic follows Hasuda Hyoe, a man who led an uprising in the Muromachi period. In Kyoto, Hyoe gathers a group of outlaws as he plans an unprecedented riot against authorities. As famine and plague ravage 15th century Japan, the laconic shogun watches and does nothing. The rebellious wanderer Hasuda Hyoe has seen enough and plots to depose the shogun and save Japan from self-imposed devastation. Starring Ôizumi Yô as the heroic Hyoe, the story pits him against one-time friend Honekawa Doken, the iconic Shin’ichi Tsutsumi in a fight for survival. Also with Nagao Kento and Matsumoto Wakana. Looks like a full-on epic with massive fight scenes and tons of extras. I just hope the rest is good.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Yû Irie’s action film Samurai Fury, direct from YouTube:

Rebellious wanderer Hasuda Hyoe has seen enough and plots to depose the shogun and save Japan from self-imposed devastation. Starring Ôizumi Yô (I Am A Hero) as the heroic Hyoe, Samurai Fury pits this hero against his one-time friend Honekawa Doken, the iconic Shin’ichi Tsutsumi (Why Don’t You Play in Hell?) in a fight for survival. Samurai Fury, also known as Muromachi Outsiders or 室町無頼, is written and directed by prolific Japanese filmmaker Yû Irie, of many films including Japonica Virus, 8000 Miles, Ringing in Their Ears, Joker Game, The Sun, Memoirs of a Murder, Gangoose, Ninja Girl, The Cursed Sanctuary X, A Girl Named Ann previously. Produced by Kazuma Kuryû. This first opened in Japan in January earlier this year, and it also played at the New York Asian Film Festival this summer. Well Go USA releases Samurai Fury direct-to-VOD to watch starting October 7th, 2025 coming soon. Any good?

“You’re hiding something…” “I’m not even here, man.” Voltage Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a movie called Safe House, a generic action thriller made by filmmaker Jamie Marshall. Not to be confused with the 2012 Denzel Washington movie also literally called Safe House – or any of the other recent movies about people hiding out in a safe house. The intense thriller is about six government agents sequestered in a covert location after a terror attack on Los Angeles. As they attempt to navigate their way through a web of paranoia, they come to suspect the perpetrator may be one of their own. But, who? Starring Lewis Tan, Lucien Laviscount, Hannah John-Kamen, Ethan Embry, and Holt McCallany. As totally expected, this looks especially bad. The script will probably make it even worse if anyone dares try to watch this film.

Here’s the official trailer for Jamie Marshall’s action thriller movie Safe House, direct from YouTube:

Safe House Movie Trailer

Six federal agents in hiding out at a safe house after a Los Angeles terror attack quickly grow suspicious of each other as they realize the perpetrator could be hiding among them. Safe House is directed by British filmmaker Jamie Marshall, making his second feature film after directing Dirty Lies (2017) previously, plus decades of other work as a second unit director in the film industry. The screenplay is written by Leon Langford. Produced by Alexandra Cocean, Lucas Jarach, and Timothy C. Sullivan. This hasn’t premiered at any film festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Voltage Pictures will debut Marhsall’s Safe House movie in select US theaters coming soon this fall stay tuned for the exact date. Anyone interested in watching this?

‘Honey Bunch’ Review: TIFF Retro Thriller

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Like “The Shining,” Dusty Mancinelli and Madeleine Sims-Fewer’s “Honey Bunch” begins with its characters heading deep into a rural countryside that immediately suggests isolation from the wider world. Its central couple, Homer (Ben Petrie) and Diana (Grace Glowicki), are en route to an experimental therapy institute where they hope the latter’s memory and motor control lapses from a bad car accident might be healed.

No sooner does the pair arrive at this backwoods facility than the film adopts the aesthetic of throwback ‘70s madhouse thrillers like Gore Verbinski’s “A Cure for Wellness” and Peter Strickland’s neo-gialli. Homer and Diana emerge from their car to a disembodied POV shot gazing down at them from a window and slowly zooming in with surveilling paranoia. One of the institute’s medical personnel, Farah (Kate Dickie), greets them with the kind of clinical cordiality that undercuts its outwardly soothing welcome with unnerving detachment.

'The Fence'

For the film’s first hour, “Honey Bunch” moves at a deliberate crawl, sinking into the simultaneously soothing and alienating qualities of the baroque manor that the institute repurposed into a therapy center. Slow pans and zooms take in large hallways within and ample grounds surrounding the building, the placating pace not quite disguising the subtle emphasis on the center’s total isolation from the outside world and the many places within its walls where it might hide secrets. Rooms are filmed in golden hues of sunlight beaming through windows, rendering everything in a bright, gossamer haze that prefigures Diana’s increasingly fraught visions of recovered memories and other, less personal hallucinations of mysterious, distorted figures in various states of illness who haunt the corridors and parlors of the vast estate.

While these unsettling details accumulate, the actors use the time to build their characters out from simple genre types to more complicated human beings. Glowicki initially has little to do as Diana other than to struggle through therapy sessions involving hypnosis and other techniques, but as Diana recovers more of her lost memories, she begins to chafe against her previously compliant, docile nature. Increasingly suspecting both her doctors and her husband, Diana nonetheless also finds moments to connect deeper with them as her inquisitiveness extends to basic human interaction alongside sleuthing for clues. Diana, already struggling to regain her full mental faculties, is loath to call attention to these misgivings, and Glowicki excels for underplaying the kind of role that tends to descend into expressionistic displays of madness in favor of subtle cues — a darting second glance, a forced tone of innocent curiosity used to phrase prying questions — to signal the woman’s mounting stress.

Similarly, Petrie strikes a careful balance between the doting, attentive husband seeking to help his wife heal and flashes of a darker side to his personality. Homer’s constant hovering can be overbearing, and there are hints that his suffocatingly intense focus on Diana’s recovery masks a guilt over some past difficulties in their marriage. By the same token, the earnest warmth with which Homer attempts to help Diana prevents the character from too quickly coming across as a controlling spouse. Both leads lean into the ambiguities of the story to explore the contours of a long-term relationship and the ways that a major trauma complicates it, in ways that can be as positive as they are frustrating.

At the halfway mark, the film shifts away from a slow-burn madhouse thriller toward a more grotesque entry in the latter-day body horror revival as the true nature of the facility’s treatment is revealed. This transition initially throws off the rhythm, losing the careful parceling out of character detail in favor of a series of plot complications and reversals and largely swapping out one set of cinematic reference points for another. To the film’s credit, it’s one of the few of the recent batch of body horror pictures to recognize the genre’s capacity for tragedy over allegorical statement and shock value.

Nonetheless, the directors get sidetracked poring over all the sordid mutations suddenly on display to the detriment of both the narrative tension and the leads’ nuanced performances. Glowicki and Petrie spend an extended portion of the second half shedding their naturalistic body language and ambiguous behavior in favor of explicit confrontations that too boldly underline what had been left unsaid to that point. Diana, Homer, and supporting characters like Farah repeatedly state aloud the film’s themes or, worse, give protracted recaps and explanations of twists as they happen.

Only in the final minutes does “Honey Bunch” regain its footing, bringing together its various stylistic and plot elements into a cohesive and thought-provoking rumination on the hazy line that separates the moral imperatives of lifelong commitment to another person from the selfishness that can ultimately undermine care for that person. Harking all the way back to Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” irresolvable questions arise regarding the ethical imperatives born of embracing technological breakthroughs too rashly. Unlike many of its obvious influences, “Honey Bunch” is built on a foundation of its characters’ genuine love and desire to help, but in some ways that makes their actions all the more horrific and troubling.

Grade: B-

“Honey Bunch” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Shudder will release it in the United States.

“You have 30 minutes to get out of that house.” Netflix has revealed a first look teaser trailer for The Rip, the latest action thriller creation from director Joe Carnahan – who also had another movie out earlier this year called Shadow Force. This time he’s teaming up with Ben Affleck & Matt Damon, starring together in another movie as pals once again. Though they get into deep trouble here – between the criminals and cops. Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on. Carnahan says it’s a story acting as an extension of the “cop film genre”, adding that: “with a real-life component, a very emotional core, and a key question that gets posed throughout the film: Are we the good guys?” Damon & Affleck co-star, along with Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler. Great cast, interesting concept, let’s see what Carnahan has been cooking up for this January Netflix debut! So far so good, looks legit – check it out.

Here’s the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Joe Carnahan’s film The Rip, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

Gory Official Trailer for ‘731’ WWII Bacterial Warfare Chinese Thriller

“Behind the hypocrisy lies a whitewashed massacre.” Well Go USA has revealed a horrifying new official trailer for a Chinese film titled 731, also known as Evil Unbound telling the shocking true story of the awful Japanese Unit 731 at the end of WWII in China. This opens in theaters in the US & in China in a few weeks. Set against the backdrop of the bacterial experiments conducted by the Japanese Imperial Army’s Unit 731 in Northeast China, and reveals the crimes of Unit 731 through the turbulent fate of an ordinary individual. Based on true events during WWII in Northeast China, an ordinary man is thrust into a horrible fate during the inhumane experiments conducted by the Japanese’s notorious Unit 731. Starring Wu Jiang, Zhiwen Wang, Naiwen Li, Qian Sun, and Ziye Lin. Even though this “full” trailer is only 60 seconds, it’s intensely terrifying & disgusting. It almost seems like an exaggerated horror movie version of this story, even though they’re trying to say this is all real & this is what it looked like. Which is indeed quite horrible.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Linshan Zhao’s thriller film 731, from Well Go’s YouTube:

731 Movie Poster

You can watch the teaser trailer for Linshan Zhao’s thriller film 731 right here for the first look again.

The story of the Japanese Army’s Unit 731 in Harbin’s Pingfang District on the eve of victory in the War of Resistance in 1945. Under the guise of “water supply & epidemic prevention,” this nefarious unit carried out bacteriological warfare research and slaughtered civilians through human experimentation, exposing many crimes against humanity. Through the tragic ordeal of innocent civilians such as street vendor Wang Yongzhang—who were deceived, captured, imprisoned, and reduced to inhumane subjects of live experiments, the film depicts the suffering, awakening, and indomitable resistance of ordinary people in the torrent of war. 731, also with the English title Evil Unbound, and titled 731: 生化启示录 or 疯狂731 in Mandarin, is written and directed by Chinese filmmaker Linshan Zhao, director of the film The Assassins with Chow Yun-Fat previously, though not much else since then. It’s produced by Hong Wang, Zhuang Yan, and Wang Zhang. Well Go USA will release Linshan Zhao’s 731 film in select US theaters at the exact same time as it opens in China – starting on September 19th, 2025 coming soon. Anyone curious to watch this?

Yet another new film from China about how horrible the Japanese Army was – which makes me worried they’re trying to get Chinese people to hate Japanese again. Which is not okay. “They could be in disguise – don’t let anyone slip by!” CMC Pictures has debuted a second trailer for the action thriller from China titled The Shadow’s Edge, which is already playing in theaters (including in the US) as of a few weeks ago. This is the second film Jackie Chan has made with filmmaker Larry Yang after also working on Ride On (2023) together previously. “Trust collapses. Truth twists. No one’s identity is safe. The hunt is on — step by step, move by move.” The legend returns — Jackie Chan is back on the front line, facing off against criminal mastermind (Leung Ka Fai Tony) and his elite “Wolf Pack” in a full-throttle war of shadows and strategy. Lots of trickery going on. Also starring Zhang Zi Feng, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Ci Sha, Jun, and Zhou Zheng Jie. This is a much better trailer this time around, compared to the first one which didn’t feature as much action footage. This new international trailer also features a hilarious English dub voiceover, which is quite unnecessary, along with a boat load of violence. Really selling it! Have a look.

Here’s the second international trailer for Larry Yang’s film The Shadow’s Edge, direct from YouTube:

The cunning and treacherous thieves challenged the Macau Judiciary Police in multiple dimensions. The Judiciary Police, which was in a tough battle, invited back the tracking expert Huang De Zhong who had retired for many years to join forces with the young elite of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Judiciary Police. Under the collision of traditional tracking techniques and high technology, the police and the criminals fought wits and courage, and launched a cat-and-mouse game-like duel between good and evil. The Shadow’s Edge, originally known as 捕风追影 or Bu Feng Zhui Ying in Mandarin, is written and directed by Chinese filmmaker Larry Yang, director of the films Sorry I Love You, Mountain Cry, Another Shot, and Adoring previously, as well as Ride On also with Jackie Chan. Produced by Victoria Hon. This will open in theaters in China starting this week. CMC Pictures will also debut Larry Yang’s The Shadow’s Edge in select US & Canadian theaters starting on August 22nd, 2025 this summer. Who wants to watch this?

“It’s an undeniably gripping story.” Well Go USA has revealed the full official trailer for a Korean mystery thriller film titled The Ugly, releasing later this month in select US theaters. It’s premiering at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival next month. And also happens to be the latest feature from prolific Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, known for the films Seoul Station, Train to Busan, Peninsula, JUNG_E, Hellbound, and this year’s Revelations. Acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho trades spectacle for intimacy with a haunting tale of memory and moral ambiguity, about a son’s search for truth and a past that refuses to stay buried. “Ugly things are scorned.” Based on director Yeon’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name, the film stars Park Jeong-min, Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-been, Im Seong-jae, & Han Ji-hyeon. It traces the journey of Im Young-gyu, a blind yet extraordinarily skilled seal artisan, and his son, Im Dong-hwan, as he unearths long-buried truths surrounding the mysterious death of Dong-hwan’s mother — which was kept a secret for 4 decades. This trailer hints at more of what’s going on – though they’re still keeping the big reveals a secret.

Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Yeon Sang-ho’s new film The Ugly, direct from YouTube:

Dong-hwan (Park Jeong-min), having inherited his blind artisan father Yeong-gyu’s seal engraving studio, persuades his father to star in a documentary about his life as a master of the craft who has overcome the limits of his disability. But the shoot takes an unexpected turn when the remains of their wife and mother are discovered after forty years. As Dong-hwan uncovers long-buried family secrets, he also unravels the story of a woman whose face has been erased from collective memory and remembered solely as an “ugly monster.” The Ugly, also known as 얼굴 in Korean, is written and directed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, known for sparking the global K-zombie frenzy with the films The King of Pigs, The Fake, Seoul Station, Train to Busan, Psychokinesis, Peninsula, continuing on with the films JUNG_E, Hellbound, The Bequeathed, and Revelations, plus the series “Parasyte: The Grey”. Based on director Yeon’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name. Produced by Wow Point. This is premiering at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival. The Guest location guide | Where was the BBC thriller filmed?

by jummy84 September 1, 2025
written by jummy84

The series explores themes surrounding wealth and class, and as such shows us two very different sides of a community. But just where was it shot and what have the cast said about the locations they filmed in?

Read on for everything you need to know about the filming locations used for The Guest.

Where was The Guest filmed?

The set of Maybury Court for The Guest. BBC / Quay Street Productions / Jake Morley

The Guest was both filmed and is set in Wales, and the series received Welsh Government support via Creative Wales.

The most notable location used for filming is Whitson Court, the house which was used for Fran’s home, Maybury Court. It is a Grade II listed building, which cane be found in Goldcliff, Newport.

Other locations used for filming included areas throughout Cardiff, and Rhossili Bay.

What have the cast and crew said about filming in Wales?

Eve Myles and director Ashley Way on the set of The Guest. She is leaning on a windowsill and he is talking to her.

On filming at Whitson Court, the location used for Maybury Court, Fran star Eve Myles said: “Maybury Court is a beautiful home, the land around it is stunning, and it’s filled with all types of animals, there’s peacocks and donkeys and cockerels. It’s an oasis of otherworldliness which lends itself to the otherworldliness of The Guest.”

Meanwhile, Ria star Gabrielle Creevy said: “When you first see those gates open, it feels almost magical, like stepping into a fairy tale or a grand castle. It’s that feeling of wonder you get when you’re younger, imagining what it would be like to live in a place like that.

“That is exactly how Ria feels when she first sees it, it’s like her chance at a new life. The location is stunning; the grounds are vast, and the landscape of Wales looks beautiful. It really adds a layer of charm and mystery to the story.”

Emun Elliott, who plays Fran’s business associate Richard in the series, spoke more broadly about filming in Wales, saying: “Wales is fantastic, Cardiff is this brilliant urban city, but you step outside of it, and it’s a whole other world. We shot on Rhossili Bay, which is one of the most stunning locations I’ve ever seen.

“I think this series will have a sense of scale. Ashley Way, our director focused on not just the intricacies of the drama but also used the landscape and the city of Cardiff itself as another character in the plot.

“Aside from the landscape and the locations in Wales, the people were fantastic. I never worked in Wales before, but there was a real warmth that I felt immediately from both the cast and the crew.”

Executive producer Davina Earl added: “Matthew (Barry) is Welsh, he writes authentically, he knows the posh parts of Cardiff where Fran might hang out, he knows Ria’s world, and he understands her background, as does Gabi, who plays her.

“We have a beautiful manor house, and then Ria’s world, which is also shot so beautifully and with scale which feels gorgeous on screen. Then to be able to go to the Gower and see the coastline, which in the winter had a stark beauty about it. Wales offered brilliant filming locations and visual ambition.”

The Guest premieres on BBC One and iPlayer at 9pm on Monday 1st September.
