Dumb Official Trailer for ‘Killer Whale’ Orca Whale Survival Horror Film

“She thinks she’s still trapped in captivity!” 🐳 Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a very dumb new horror movie called Killer Whale, an Orca spin on the usual shark movie with all the same tropes. Step aside Free Willy, this one ain’t your friendly killer whale! The story follows best friends Maddie and Trish as they find themselves trapped in a remote lagoon with the dangerous killer whale named Ceto. Their peaceful retreat soon becomes a terrifying fight to stay alive when the ocean’s most bloodthirsty predator seeks vengeance for a brutal life in captivity. Get ’em, Ceto! Killer Whale stars Virginia Gardner, Mel Jarnson, and Mitchell Hope. It’s a lot like these shark movies such as The Shallows, The Reef, or Open Water, but with a few of its own twists. While I don’t enjoy seeing the beautiful Orcas be turned into villains, I’ll let it slide for one horror movie. Alas it looks awful – even the CGI seems worse than most shark movies. Oh well.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Jo-Anne Brechin’s film Killer Whale, direct from YouTube:

Killer Whale Poster

Hold your breath as you witness revenge rise from the deep. After a life-shattering tragedy, Trish (Mel Jarnson) tries to comfort her best friend, Maddie (Virginia Gardner), by bringing her on a spectacular adventure in a private lagoon halfway across the world. Their peaceful retreat soon becomes a terrifying fight to stay alive when the ocean’s most bloodthirsty predator seeks vengeance for a brutal life spent in captivity. A thrill ride of a movie that will leave everyone breathless. Killer Whale is directed by writer / producer / filmmaker Jo-Anne Brechin, director of the films Paper Champions, When Love Springs, One Perfect Match, Designing Christmas with You previously. The screenplay is written by Katharine E. McPhee, Jo-Anne Brechin. Produced by Lionel Hicks, Steve Jaggi, Kylie Pascoe. Lionsgate debuts Brechin’s Killer Whale movie in theaters + on VOD starting January 16th, 2026 coming soon. Who wants to watch this?

“When all seems lost… the heart prevails.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted the full official trailer for an indie survival thriller film titled Hazel’s Heart, based on a true story from the 1920s. It’s the first feature film directed by North Dakota producer / writer Daniel Bielinski, and will be out on VOD directly later in December coming up. Based on the true story of Hazel Miner, now turned into this religious fable. In March of 1920, three children become lost in a white-out blizzard in the middle of North Dakota. For the next 25 hours, they must fight to survive while their father leads a desperate hunt to find them before it is too late. A powerful story of perseverance and survival in freezing temperatures. The film stars Madelyn Dundon as Hazel Miner, Stelio Savante, Genevieve Bielinski, Xavier Bielinski, Timothy E. Goodwin, David Michael Reardon, with Franni Cash, Todd Terry, and Laurie Fortier. This looks blatantly cliche and cheesy, of course, but I’ll give them some credit for trying to recreate the blizzard to film in to tell this story.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel Bielinski’s film Hazel’s Heart, direct from YouTube:

Hazel's Heart Trailer

In March of 1920, just outside of Center, North Dakota, Hazel Miner (starring Madelyn Dundon) and her two siblings – Emmet and Myrdith – are getting ready to leave from school. The students have been sent home early as the weather has started to turn from gentle snowfall to what looks like it could be a terrible snowstorm. As the siblings struggle through the wind and snow, their sled overturns into a coulee and the three take shelter to try and survive the night. As they fight to stay warm and awake, their parents and friends work furiously to try and find them before it’s too late. Hazel’s Heart, formerly known as just Hazel, is written and directed by American indie writer / producer / filmmaker Daniel Bielinski, directing his first feature film after writing on A Heart Like Water and End of the Rope previously. Produced by Dave Diebel, J. Brockton Holbert, Rachel Morrison, Carson Nordgaard, Kayli Schadler, and Daniel Bielinski. This hasn’t premiered at any film festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Samuel Goldwyn Films will release Bielinski’s Hazel’s Heart film direct-to-VOD starting December 23rd, 2025 coming up. Want to watch?

Why Did the BBC’s Top Leaders Resign? For the Beeb’s Survival

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

It was a scandal that propelled his leadership of the BBC. And now another one has taken it away.

Tim Davie, the 17th Director General of the BBC, announced his resignation November 9 alongside Deborah Turness, the CEO of BBC News. The moves come as part of the growing fallout over a BBC program that edited a January 6, 2021 speech from Donald Trump to make it seem like he was explicitly calling for violence that day, and combined separate quotes that, in fact, were said over 50 minutes apart. The resignations follow Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension and reinstatement at ABC, editorial changes made at CBS News, and other apparent concessions made to Trump across the media landscape. The president immediately followed up the news of Davie and Turness’ departures by threatening to sue the BBC for $1 billion.

'Pluribus' stars Rhea Seehorn, shown here grabbing a doctor by the shoulders in a crowded waiting room

Whether or not that lawsuit actually proceeds, Davie and Turness’ resignations show one thing is clear: The BBC is operating in survival mode right now and taking steps, even drastic ones, to ensure the organization can continue into the future. The BBC has faced existential moments before — but maybe none quite like this one, especially as discussions ramp up in 2026 before the current charter expires at the end of 2027 (more on that charter process follows below). Davie himself embodies the foundational question that guides so much decision-making there: What should the BBC be?

There is a remarkable symmetry to his BBC tenure. A Pepsi marketing executive who joined the Beeb as the Director of Marketing, Communications, and Audiences in 2005, Davie was initially propelled into the Director General role in 2012 because of a scandal in which the program “Newsnight” erroneously identified a Conservative MP in a child abuse case. He then made his name by his rigorous investigation of the Jimmy Savile sex abuse case. His Director General role then was just a temporary stint before Davie became the CEO of BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, which sells BBC programs and merchandise around the world (think: “Dancing with the Stars”). And now another scandal about misleading reporting has ended his BBC career altogether, after he became Director General permanently in 2020.

I encountered Davie a few times while I was the New York-based Deputy Editor of BBC Culture from 2013 to 2018. For the first part of that period, BBC Culture was housed under BBC Worldwide (later renamed BBC Studios), before we were transferred to BBC News following the 2016 election. Davie would visit our New York office once or twice a year and give a polished Town Hall in front of every employee.

While the BBC and its audience could skew nerdy — full of news junkies and fans of its period dramas as well as “Doctor Who” — Davie represented corporate panache. His whole job was to pursue scale, scale, scale, and relentlessly expand the BBC far beyond its former reach. Wearing a blazer but no necktie, and evoking someone with a salary capable of routine vacations in the Maldives, he’d give his Jobsian presentations seeming more like a commercial executive than someone who’d once again ever sit atop the world’s largest publicly funded news organization. And he had a peculiar verbal tic, ending many of his bullet-point comments with “Yeah?” clearly posed as a question. Intentional or not, it had the effect of cultivating a “smartest man in the room” vibe. What else could we as his listeners respond to “Yeah?” with but “Yeah, I get it!” lest we seem degrees less intelligent ourselves.

On one occasion the features sites of which I was part (Autos, Worklife, Future, and Travel, being the others) were to give presentations to him about what we do. Each editor, myself included, had to give a short synopsis of our editorial successes and what we had coming up. It was like preparing for the arrival of the king, down to a full rehearsal of exactly everything we were going to say. He also could have the icy rhetoric of a bean counter — I never forgot a BBC-wide email he sent announcing the termination of a partnership with travel brand Lonely Planet with the phrase “the partnership with Lonely Planet has not added value to the BBC” — so we had to get it right.

His visit went fine, of course. But he was a CEO, not a journalist. Not one of us. Installing him as Director General in 2020 symbolizes many of the ongoing challenges of the BBC as a brand: How far can it grow until it’s no longer the BBC? Davie relentlessly wanted to diversify the BBC’s revenue streams by expanding commercially. It’s a kind of endless pas de deux that will continue after him as well: How to wean off U.K. government funding without ever doing too much to truly jeopardize the existence of that government funding.

For the uninitiated, that public funding is the BBC’s lifeblood: Every year, anyone who wants to watch live TV or utilize the BBC’s streaming iPlayer service has to pay the BBC Licence Fee, which is currently a flat £174.50 ($230) a year. That that has to be paid upfront before watching any live TV at all is a source of routine controversy. What if you were forced to pay for a certain cable plan in the U.S., no matter what? There’s basically no cord-cutting allowed with the Licence Fee. And it means that, as the BBC is the national broadcaster receiving these public funds from the ordinary British taxpayer, it’s held to levels of scrutiny, and standards of impartiality, we can’t even imagine for our own broadcasters in the U.S.

Part of the reason why Davie was an attractive Director General was the fact he flew against the Beeb’s perceived left-wing bias, having run for public office with the Conservative Party in the past. In 2020, he issued a strict social media policy for all BBC journalists that specifically cautioned against “virtue signaling.” The New Statesman named him the 11th most powerful person on the right in U.K. politics.

That he would still run afoul of Trump despite all that shows how difficult it is to run a news organization at this moment. But also how difficult it is to relentlessly grow, expand, and commercialize something that isn’t entirely meant to be commercial. Previous Directors General, such as Davie’s immediate predecessor Tony Hall, who was also the final governor of Hong Kong, had backgrounds more in keeping with preserving national treasures, not powering explosive growth.

For what it’s worth, Turness, with her background as an actual journalist and former president of NBC News (immediately preceding “A House of Dynamite” scribe Noah Oppenheim in the post), was a perfect choice as BBC News CEO herself. She represented a distinctly British tradition of newsgathering as a public service; Davie the monetization of it.

That both would be forced to resign makes one wonder where the BBC can go next but retreat into its absolute core competencies. Especially since the once-a-decade charter renewal, which allocates the Licence Fee, is coming up soon. Every 10 years, after a long debate about the scope and parameters of public funding for the BBC and the issuing of white papers, a charter for its continual operation is submitted to the Sovereign, now King Charles III, for the royal seal of approval. This can be a fraught process: Become too commercial, as some might argue the BBC did become under Davie, then the question can be asked, “Why allocate public funds at all?”

Or: Wade too deeply into controversial subjects, and the BBC can be hit with partisan backlash. Trump ally Nigel Farage touted the resignation of Davie and Turness as an admission the BBC is “institutionally biased” in what The Independent said was him “dancing on its grave.” There have been threats to end the charter before — Boris Johnson’s own culture secretary Nadine Dorries said she intended for the current charter to be its last — but maybe they’ve never landed with such force until right now.

Davie and Turness both leaving feels like an anticipatory move of the charter fight to come. Cleaning house and starting over might well put the BBC on a better footing to face the question that must be answered after “What should the BBC be?”: What should the BBC become?

Hot Air Balloon Survival Thriller ‘Turbulence’ Trailer with Jeremy Irvine

“You’re not getting away with this…” Lionsgate has debute their trailer for a movie called Turbulence, an intense action thriller survival movie from Swiss filmmaker Claudio Fäh. He’s known for making schlocky direct-to-video action movies and this definitely looks direct-to-VOD quality. Young married couple Zach & Emmy decide to take a hot air balloon trip across the Italian Dolomites to rekindle their relationship. When they and pilot Harry are joined by a third passenger, Julia, events unfold in ways in which they could never imagine 5000 meters (or ~16,400 feet) in the air. In this high-octane action thriller, what should have been the trip of a lifetime turns to disaster as the dark secrets harbored by the passengers are revealed & the wrath of nature is unleashed. With Hera Hilmar, Jeremy Irvine, Kelsey Grammer, Olga Kurylenko. Any guesses on what the “dark secret” will be? How will they get out of this safely? I love “99 Red Balloons” but the song clips they use in this trailer are so bad. The whole film looks way too cheap & cheesy to watch.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Claudio Fäh’s thriller movie Turbulence, direct from YouTube:

Turbulence Poster

Zach & Emmy’s (Jeremy Irvine & Hera Hilmar) romantic retreat on a hot air balloon takes a terrifying turn when they are hijacked by a sinister third passenger with a link to Zach’s past. As the mystery of their secret relationship is revealed, their spectacular ride becomes a brutal mental chess match and a lethal battle high in the sky. Kelsey Grammer leads a brilliant cast in this psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last moment. Turbulence is directed by Swiss filmmaker Claudio Fäh, director of the movies Coronado, Hollow Man II, Sniper: Reloaded, Northmen: A Viking Saga, Beyond Valkyrie, Sniper: Ultimate Kill, No Way Up, and also the series “Wilder”. The screenplay is written by Andy Mayson. Produced by Richard J. Berthy, Amanda Bowers, Molly Conners, Andy Mayson. Lionsgate will debut Fäh’s Turbulence movie in select US theaters + on VOD starting December 12th, 2025 coming up. Look scary?

It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month — This Is My Story From Survival To Safe Horizon

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Warning: This story contains graphic details of domestic violence.

I will never forget the night that finally made me leave. My ex-partner and I were at an event with friends. Everything seemed fine until he — as he often did — switched from affectionate to enraged without warning. Throughout the night, he sent me cryptic texts: “I’m watching you. You’ll see what happens when we get home.”

The venue was dark and crowded, which allowed him to hide in the shadows. When he finally appeared, I was already in tears. I told him I was done. He grabbed me so tightly I could barely breathe, whispering, “You’ll never leave me.” When I tried to escape, he threw me to the ground and began kicking me—my face, my stomach, my back. I remember praying, “God, please help me get through this.” A friend eventually pulled him off me, and another rushed me outside.

That night, I ran to my sister’s apartment. My best friend joined us, and together they convinced me to call my mother. I didn’t want to; I had been hiding so much from my family, and I knew calling meant going to the hospital and filing a report. I also feared what my ex had always threatened: “If you send me to jail, I’ll kill myself.”

When my mom saw my bruised face over FaceTime, she broke down. At the hospital, I was surrounded by police officers and doctors, forced to retell the story again and again. Even then, I tried to protect him—until I learned he and his mother lied to the police, saying I’d fallen down stairs. That betrayal broke something in me. I told the truth. I filed for a restraining order, terrified but determined to protect myself.

When I met him, I was in a vulnerable place and searching for love, something I think now that he sensed. The control and manipulation started subtly—name-calling, jealousy, isolation. I was shocked, yes, but I took it because I convinced myself that he loved me. Then the emotional abuse became physical. I was constantly walking on eggshells, terrified of his next outburst. He would punch walls, throw objects, and then apologize, promising he’d never hurt me again. Like so many survivors, I stayed, believing he could change. I was in a constant state of hope—hope that the man I first met would return, hope that things would go back to “normal.” However, the truth is that there was never anything normal about it.

Domestic violence is not simply isolated or personal; it’s cultural, systemic, and global. It crosses every boundary: race, class, gender, and age.

The abuse only escalated from there. Over time, I became someone I didn’t recognize—isolated, anxious, and ashamed. He would push me against walls, crack drywall, and then threaten to harm himself to pull me back in. I remember breaking down locked doors to stop him from self-harming. Every time I thought of leaving, he’d promise to change—or promise to die.

After that final night, something inside me broke open. I started therapy and eventually found Safe Horizon through friends and family who told me about the work they do. It was the first time I felt truly ready to speak out.

I learned that my story was not unique, and that’s what makes it so devastating. Domestic violence is not simply isolated or personal; it’s cultural, systemic, and global. It crosses every boundary: race, class, gender, and age. The tactics abusers use are eerily similar: isolation, intimidation, emotional manipulation, and control.

Safe Horizon, the largest victim service nonprofit in the U.S., provides critical resources for survivors of abuse and violent crime. What drew me to them was their inclusive approach—they support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and more. Their Streetwork Project helps young people experiencing homelessness due to abuse, offering food, shelter, medical care, and compassion without judgment. They reach survivors wherever they are, meeting them with dignity and safety.

Too often, young women—especially Black women—don’t feel safe seeking help. We’re told to stay quiet, that no one will believe us, that leaving is pointless. And the question survivors hear most—“Why didn’t you just leave?”—is one of the most harmful. As FKA Twigs bravely shared when speaking about her own experience, that question blames the survivor instead of the perpetrator. Leaving isn’t simple—it’s dangerous. It’s layered with fear, shame, financial dependency, and psychological manipulation. Even after leaving, survivors face systemic challenges: renewing restraining orders, reliving trauma in court, and constantly looking over our shoulders.

Through Safe Horizon, I found healing, advocacy, and community. The organization’s leaders like Lisa A. O’Connor and Liz Roberts, create true safety by approaching survivors with empathy, patience, and emotional intelligence. Even small gestures—asking “Do you welcome hugs?”—remind survivors that we have autonomy again.

One of the most profound parts of my healing has been realizing that survival doesn’t mean the pain disappears. It means transforming it. As author and grief expert David Kessler wrote, I learned to turn my “pain into purpose”. I use my voice now to help others recognize the signs of abuse before it’s too late. Love should never make you smaller. Real love doesn’t silence, it protects and uplifts.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, reach out to Safe Horizon at 1-800-621-HOPE (4673) or visit safehorizon.org. There is a way out, and there are people here to help you find it.

Cardiothoracic surgeon says ‘every minute without defibrillation drops survival by about 10%,’ explains how AEDs work

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Defibrillators are life-saving devices designed to restore the heart’s normal rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. They are widely available in schools, airports, gyms, and public spaces – but despite their accessibility, most people don’t know how to use them. However, even basic knowledge and quick action in an emergency can make the difference between life and death.

Dr Jeremy London, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 25 years of clinical experience, is raising awareness about the crucial role defibrillators play in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrests. In an Instagram video shared on October 22, the cardiologist breaks down how defibrillators work, emphasising that swift action during a sudden collapse can be lifesaving.

How does AED work?

According to Dr London, an AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a simple device commonly found in airports, gyms, schools, and other public spaces – yet most people pass by without a second thought. In critical moments, however, knowing how to use one can literally be the difference between life and death.

The cardiologist explains, “An AED doesn’t restart the heart like you see in the movies. It works by delivering a quick electrical shock that depolarises the heart muscle, stopping the chaotic rhythm just long enough for the heart’s natural pacemaker to reset and start beating normally again. It’s used for sudden cardiac arrest when the heart’s electrical system goes haywire and stops pumping blood.”

Knowing how to use AED can save lives

Dr London highlights that time is of the essence when someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, hence every second matters. He stresses, “Every minute without defibrillation drops survival by about 10%. The good news, AEDs are fully automated and talk you through each step, where to place the pads, when to stand clear, and if a shock is actually needed.”

You don’t need to be a doctor to use an AED – “You just have to know where the AED is and have the courage to actually use it. Because when someone collapses, seconds matter. And you might be the one who saves their life,” emphasises Dr London.

Billionaires’ Bunker Review: A Stylish Survival Drama That’s Flawed But Fascinating | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Billionaires’ Bunker arrived on Netflix with quiet confidence, carrying the signature tension and spectacle viewers expect from Spanish thrillers. The premise is both dark and addictive: a group of ultra-rich families retreat underground to survive what they believe is a global apocalypse. What unfolds inside that bunker is a mix of privilege, paranoia, and power games that slowly unravel into something much more complex.

The show follows Max, a man just out of prison who suddenly finds himself dragged into his family’s luxurious underground shelter, the Kimera bunker. As he adjusts to life in this sealed world, it becomes clear that not everyone is there for survival. Secrets emerge, loyalties fracture, and questions about the world above start to haunt everyone inside.

What Works:

Fans online agree that worldbuilding is one of the show’s biggest strengths. The bunker looks stunning yet suffocating, perfectly capturing the sense of safety that feels like a trap. Many viewers have called it “one of the best-looking Netflix shows this year,” appreciating how the atmosphere feels both cinematic and claustrophobic.

Another thing people love is how the story plays with morality. Viewers have praised how it doesn’t stick to a simple good-versus-evil narrative. Instead, it shows how fear, greed, and guilt blur everything. The interactions between Max and Asia are also a highlight for many fans. Their tension-filled chemistry gives the story a human core in a world driven by secrets and survival.

The ending has become one of the most-discussed parts of the show. Fans have been posting theories about what really happened above ground and whether the supposed apocalypse was ever real. Some call it one of Netflix’s smarter twists in recent months.

Where It Misses?

Despite its visual appeal and tension, Billionaires’ Bunker isn’t perfect. Viewers have pointed out that the middle episodes drag. Several Reddit threads describe the pacing as “slow and repetitive,” especially around episodes four to six. Others say it feels like “too much conversation, not enough revelation.”

Another common complaint is that some characters feel flat. Audiences mention that while the main cast holds attention, the supporting characters blend into the background without clear motivation. A few users compared it to Money Heist, saying it has “the same energy, but without the spark.”

A number of fans also criticized the tone for being uneven. Some episodes feel like a high-stakes thriller, while others slip into soap-style melodrama. There are even moments where the emotional beats don’t hit the way they should. Still, most viewers agree that the finale pulls things back together in a satisfying way.

Final Thoughts:

Billionaires’ Bunker is the kind of series that grows on you. It’s flawed, yes, but also oddly captivating. The setting alone makes it worth watching, and even when the story feels stretched, it holds your curiosity. What keeps it interesting is how it uses a survival setup to say something about wealth, truth, and human nature.

It’s not a perfect show, but it’s definitely not a bad one. Fans are right when they call it “a beautiful mess.” It’s the kind of series that keeps you watching, not because it’s flawless, but because it’s unpredictable and strangely magnetic.

For me, Billionaires’ Bunker earns a 3.5 out of 5. It’s a solid weekend watch with enough mystery, tension, and emotional moments to keep you thinking even after it ends.

Tollywood actor Vijay Deverakonda narrowly escaped death when he was involved in a car accident on Monday night in Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district. The accident took place near Undavalli as the actor was returning to Hyderabad from Puttaparthi.

The accident occurred on National Highway 44, opposite the Varasiddhi Vinayaka Cotton Mill, as per reports. A truck loaded with sheep was said to have suddenly applied the brakes while transporting sheep from Nandikotkur to Pebbair. This led to a chain reaction. In the midst of the chaos, Vijay Deverakonda’s car collided with a Bolero pick-up heading in the opposite direction. The front half of the actor’s vehicle got partially damaged as a result of the collision.

Luckily, Vijay and the other people who were in the accident were fine, and there were no injuries reported. Prompt treatment and fast reaction prevented what could otherwise have turned into a deadly accident.

Once he had ensured that everything was fine at the location, Vijay is said to have taken a friend’s car and driven home to Hyderabad. The accident temporarily caused a jam on the highway, which was cleared by police in no time.

The news of the accident spread quickly, with fans breathing a sigh of relief that the actor was safe and unharmed. Social media was soon filled with wishes for his well-being and gratitude to providence for sparing the popular actor unhurt.

What do we have here? Invada Films has debuted an official UK trailer for a survival thriller indie film titled Game, made by filmmaker John Minton as his feature directorial debut. Not to be confused with the Gerard Butler video game action movie Gamer from 2009. Game is a thriller set during the ’90s British rave scene, where two men, one a thief and one a poacher, must use their wits to survive after a car crash in the woods. It’s produced by Geoff Barrow of the band Portishead, trying out something new. Starring Marc Bessant & Jason Williamson. The official UK premiere will be on October 16th at the opening night of Mayhem Film Festival in Nottingham, before the film hits UK theaters in November. Though still no US release set yet for this one. The film looks like some funky experimental indie horror creation, mixing nature and raves and psychological mania and more. What’s going on with these blokes in the forest? Keep an eye out for it…

Here’s the official UK trailer (+ poster) for John Minton’s film Game, from YouTube (via Live for Films):

Late summer 1993. After stealing a stash of money and drugs, aging raver David (Marc Bessant) crashes his car deep in the woods – trapped in the wreckage, injured and helpless, he hangs suspended between life & death. When a mysterious poacher (Jason Williamson) discovers him, no rescue comes, only a watchful, unsettling presence that seems intent on letting nature finish the job. As the hours stretch and the elements close in, a tense and claustrophobic battle of wills, and wits, unfolds – where survival hinges on outlasting both the wilderness and the predator at its edge. 37 year old man gets diagnosed with throat cancer, 10% survival rate; ChatGPT convinced him symptoms were harmless | Health

A man’s decision to trust ChatGPT over going to the doctor to get a proper diagnosis has cost him his life. Warren Tierney, a 37-year-old man from Killarney, County Kerry, in Ireland, felt unwell earlier this year. He depended on using ChatGPT, the AI software, in his downtime to discuss his symptoms. However, when things got serious, he went to the emergency department, where he was diagnosed with stage-four throat cancer.

ChatGPT convinces a man it’s not cancer, turns out it was!

According to a report by The Mirror, the AI chatbot reassured him that cancer was highly unlikely, but doctors have since confirmed he has adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. Earlier this year, Warren was unable to swallow fluids and felt unwell. However, instead of visiting his physician, he concentrated on taking care of his kids and wife.

Warren turned to ChatGPT for advice. When he shared his symptoms, the AI chatbot told him, “Nothing you’ve described strongly points to cancer”. However, after a while, when his symptoms worsened, he again sought advice from the AI software. “I will walk with you through every result that comes. If this is cancer — we’ll face it. If it’s not — we’ll breathe again,” it said.

However, a few days ago, his symptoms didn’t seem to be improving, and a quick checkup by the doctors when he admitted himself to the emergency department found that he had a stage-four adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus, a cancer with an average five-year survival rate of just five to 10 percent.

‘It cost me a couple of months…’

Warren now advocates for people not to rely on AI too much. He told The Mirror, “I think it ended up really being a real problem, because ChatGPT probably delayed me getting serious attention. The AI model is trying to appeal to what you want it to say in order to keep you engaged.”

He added, “I know that probably cost me a couple of months. And that’s where we have to be super careful when using AI. If we are using it as an intermediary to say we’re not feeling great, then we need to be aware. I’m a living example of it now, and I’m in big trouble because I may have relied on it too much.”

Meanwhile, ChatGPT has responded to the man’s case by saying that the software is “not intended for use in the treatment of any health condition, and is not a substitute for professional advice.”
