Jens Lekman: Songs for Other People’s Weddings Album Review

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Lekman had long corresponded with author David Levithan, who co-wrote the 2006 novel Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, before they collaborated on songs for a novel, also called Songs for Other People’s Weddings, about a fictional but familiar wedding singer. But then, rather than just recording the songs he wrote for the book, Lekman went further, delving into the characters’ POVs to create a Sinatra-inspired standalone musical. Appreciating the resulting album isn’t contingent on the book—it’s pure Lekmanalia. But it’s contingent on how much pleasure you can stand. If the record has a defect besides the preciousness that Lekman, to his devotees, turns into an indispensable virtue, it’s the whopping length. My nervous system just can’t endure 17 tracks of uncut Jens at once; it’s a giddy squee! sustained for 80 minutes. But it has variety and inspiration throughout, and it works great when taken in two chunks, one spinning a relationship together and the other gently tugging it apart.

The story traces the arc of the romance between J, the Lekman proxy, and V. They meet at a wedding where all the guests are dressed as songs (he’s “Raspberry Beret,” she’s “Crazy in Love”), and after taking a pill that tastes like hairspray, they fall into the playful connection that will define their intimacy. It’s about being in love while also being love’s outsider, both participant and observer, a split that blurs the line between life and music—as Lekman adores doing. When V moves overseas, seeking space, J starts booking gigs just to be near her. Throughout, V is powerfully sung by Matilda Sargren, whom Lekman recruited through a youth orchestra in his hometown. V has the last word on their relationship, and J learns that his music’s purpose is not to bottle permanence but to celebrate connection, however fleeting.

The music has as many moods as love does: now light and irrepressible, now crackling with an erotic charge, then turning tentative or questioning, cozy or desolate. Duets peel off into monologues; what was joyous returns as profound. Lekman’s storytelling is exceptionally detailed and funny, kind of like a Swedish David Sedaris, and his wedding-singer avatar gives him a chorus of toothsome characters and milieus to weave through J and V’s evolving dynamic. “GOT-JFK” kicks off an ingenious suite set at a performance-art wedding in Brooklyn; later J finds himself at a singles table in Leipzig with “two sisters who look like Patty and Selma from The Simpsons/An elderly man whose lungs sound like a broken whistle/And a man who’s the embodiment of a full blown incel.” We come to realize that Lekman’s side hustle, rather than taking away from his songwriting, must inestimably feed it.

For Good’ to Feature 2 New Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo Songs

by jummy84 September 10, 2025
written by jummy84

New movie will include two original songs

When Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters later this year, Ariana Grande‘s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo‘s Elphaba will face hard truths through new songs. Stephen Schwartz composed two new songs for the film, but director Jon Chu assures moviegoers with a particular attachment to the original soundtrack that they wouldn’t have added them if they weren’t essential. “Even after we recorded them, even after we put them in the movie,” he told EW, “we kicked the tires on them to make sure that we had to put them in this movie.”

While the song titles have not been revealed, Chu shared details about how they assist in moving the story forward. “They’re questioning, ‘What is home? And what happens when you are fighting for a home that you realize doesn’t even want you there, or was never meant for you? Do you defend it? Do you fight for it? Does anyone else think of home the same as you?’” he said. Wicked concluded with Elphaba taking off toward the west following an explosive performance of “Defying Gravity,” leaving Glinda behind.

“Glinda is the one that has to ultimately pop her own bubble,” Chu said. “She has to leave her privilege to actually see other people’s struggles and fight for justice and equality.” Both characters are looking for answers and understanding. For the director, it’s a similar experience to what he felt watching the original production. “Both of these songs are about how to do that, and it’s questions that I’ve always wanted to hear from them in the stage show, but never got to,” he said. “We get to take our time and explore those questions.”

Trending Stories

Erivo worked with Schwartz to compose one of the Wicked: For Good original numbers. “When we filmed it, the entire crew was in tears. I hope audiences are ready — it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is,” she teased earlier this year. “I have a feeling that even the title will move you … We’re diving deeper into the consequences of the characters’ choices. The story is richer, and the stakes are higher. It’s not just a continuation; it’s a transformation.”

Wicked: For Good hits theaters on Nov. 21, 2025. “They ask us elemental questions of being human, not just the great parts — the celebratory, joyful parts of being human — but the scary, dark parts that test us,” Chu said. “Everybody thinks it’s about this time, and yet it’s about all time. We are a little bit good and we all are a little bit wicked, and how do we navigate that?”

Morrissey Email Soliciting Offers for Rights to Smiths Songs Shut Down

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Morrissey shut down an email to solicit offers for his rights to the Smiths’ music and other connected intellectual property, according to a post on his official website.

“The ‘eaves’ business email address has been switched off due to the colossal response to Morrissey’s announcement of his wish to pass his ‘Smiths’ interests over to an investor,” the post from Friday stated. “Although Morrisseys’ love for the songs of the Smiths era will never waver, he is tired of the disagreeable and vexatious characters involved in ‘The Smiths’ business.”

The post continued: “After thirty-eight years of insults and abuse, Morrissey has had enough. All (or most) of the ‘eaves’ emails will be answered in time.”

Last week, Morrissey Central and the singer’s official Instagram accounts posted an announcement that he was selling the entirety of his business interests in the Smiths. It is unclear if Morrissey created the posts. Reps for Morrissey did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s requests for comment. The posts, titled “A Soul for Sale,” included a quote attributed to the former Smiths frontman that said he was “burnt out by any and all connections” with his former bandmates, and wanted to “live disassociated” from them. He cited that it led him to put his rights to Smiths intellectual property up for sale. The announcement included an email address, which bounced back when Rolling Stone reached out for comment.

Up for grabs, per the announcement, are the “full and exclusive rights” to the name “The Smiths” created by Morrissey, all of the Smiths’ artwork created by him, All Smiths merchandising rights, all Smiths songs lyrically and musically, all synchronization rights, all Smiths recordings, and all contractual rights for Smiths publishing.

“I am burnt out by any and all connections to [Former Smiths members Johnny] Marr, [Andy] Rourke, [Mike] Joyce. I have had enough of malicious associations. With my entire life I have paid my rightful dues to these songs and these images,” he said per the quote attributed to him. “I would now like to live disassociated from those who wish me nothing but ill-will and destruction, and this is the only resolution.”

Editor’s picks

Morrissey continued: “The songs are me – they are no one else – but they bring with them business communications that go to excessive lengths to create as much dread and spite year after year. I must now protect myself, especially my health.”

A rep for Marr did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment regarding the sale announcement. A rep for Joyce said he does not comment on what his former bandmates say or do.

The Smiths broke up in 1987 and Morrissey and Marr have had a tenuous relationship ever since. Last year, Marr revealed he said “no” to an offer Morrissey said he received from AEG Entertainment Group to reform the band alongside Marr.

Trending Stories

Though in 2008, they met at a pub to discuss a possible Smiths reunion. “In that moment it seemed that with the right intention it could actually be done and might even be great,” Marr wrote in his 2016 memoir Set the Boy Free. “For four days it was a very real prospect.” The potential reunion was fleeting, however, after Marr left to Mexico to tour with the Cribs. “And then suddenly there was radio silence,” Marr wrote. “Our communication ended, and things went back to how they were and how I expect they always will be.”

Drummer Joyce has been estranged from Morrissey and Marr following a 1996 lawsuit over the Smiths royalties that was contentious. After bassist Rourke died in 2023, a proper reunion was no longer possible.

We’ve whittled it down to about 70 songs

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Radiohead are set to embark on a UK and European tour later this year, with Colin Greenwood shedding light on their “busking approach” to the setlist.

  • READ MORE: Colin Greenwood on capturing “the middle era” of Radiohead – and what’s next for the band

The band are due to make their long-awaited return to the stage this November for a run of 20 arena concerts across five cities. It’ll mark their first performances together since 2018.

Kicking off in Madrid, the upcoming trek will also include concerts in Bologna, Copenhagen, Berlin and London. Thom Yorke and co’s return to the UK capital will see them host a four-night residency at The O2 in Greenwich on November 21, 22, 24 and 25.

Now, bassist Colin Greenwood has given a hint as to the setlist for the upcoming shows. Speaking in a new interview on the Adam Buxton Podcast about their live undertaking, he said: “Oh, I think it’s going to be a mix set. I think we’ve like whittled it down to about 70 songs. And me and my brother [guitarist Jonny Greenwood] are not on the setlist committee, we’re not allowed, because we’re too indecisive.”

“So we’ll play anything in any order, at any time. We sort of take a busking attitude to the Radiohead setlist,” he added. “It’s going to be the first time I think we’ve done shows where we haven’t got new material to play as work in progress. But you never know, some stuff might come up or not or whatever, so.”

Greenwood previously revealed last year that Radiohead “did some rehearsals” over the summer. However, he later told NME that “it doesn’t mean a tour is imminent”. He added: “I think we’re still a band where people might want to know what might happen next. We’re very lucky to have that.”

The band’s most recent live performance was held on August 1, 2018 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It marked the end of their ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ tour in support of their 2017 album of the same name – which they have yet to follow up.

The band began teasing their 2025 shows earlier this week, when a series of flyers popped up in the cities they’ll be visiting.

This March, it was reported that they had “placed holds in select European cities for a run of residency gigs” this year. This came shortly after Radiohead sparked rumours of new music after forming a new legal entity called RHEUK25 LLP.

Elsewhere, Jonny Greenwood told us that the rehearsals were “fun and natural”, but explained that there were “no plans” for new material. “We’ve [got] lots of individual projects going on at the moment,” he explained.

Frontman Yorke, meanwhile, said around the same time that he “really doesn’t give a fuck” if fans wanted Radiohead to return. The singer, who has been busy with The Smile in recent years, admitted in August that he was “still struggling” to be creative following the COVID-19 pandemic. He was speaking upon the launch of Radiohead’s new exhibition, ‘This Is What You Get’.

In other news, the band have revisited some “archive” recordings from the ‘Hail To The Thief’ era for a new live album. This year, Yorke brought the 2003 record to the stage with his Hamlet Hail To The Thief production.

Meanwhile, the pro-Palestine BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement has called for a boycott of Radiohead’s 2025 tour. The campaign group have said the group have “yet to apologise” for a show in Tel Aviv in 2017, and has criticised Jonny Greenwood’s past performances with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa.

Drake Shares New Songs Featuring Yeat and Cash Cobain

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

As promised, the third installment of Drake‘s Iceman series, which has been streamed live on YouTube, premiered tonight, offering more hints about his upcoming album, Iceman. The stream follows the first two in the series, where Drake unveiled singles “What Did I Miss?” and “Which One.” Tonight, he shared “Somebody Eats Me,” featuring Cash Cobain, who famously contributed to For All The Dogs on “Calling For You.” This new song finds Drake in his Slizzy bag, and Cobain, who recently contributed to Justin Bieber’s album Swag, in prime form, sampling “Somebody Who Loves Me,” from Drake and PartyNextDoor’s collaborative project $ome $exy $ongs 4 U. Drake also premiered a new song with Yeat featuring the singer Julia Wolf.

During the stream, which opened with audio of the Italian easy listening song “Parole Parole” by Mina (almost certainly a cryptic easter egg as the song’s chorus is all about “empty words”), Drizzy saunters through an ominous-looking Italian locale before picking up the phone to call Yeat, who appears in a split frame. Yeat then joins him in another room, handing over what appears to be a file or document. Drake then heads outside into a car where he begins playing a snippet of a new song. The track finds Drake in a familiar register, still clearly fuming over the past year’s beef. “All those summers of slappers you owe me,” he raps before a sped-up beat switch finds him musing on how “they been talkin since 2008.” From the car, Drake then plays a second track that appears to be a freestyle featuring a moody, lo-fi jerk-inspired beat, where we hear him lament how he “aint even know how bad they wanna see me go.”

The stream transitions to an instrumental, where “Parole Parole” is sampled in quintessential Drake fashion, featuring stuttering drums and glittery hi-hats before it’s silent, and we’re in an Italian restaurant, watching a man and woman eat dinner. Four Pinocchio characters enter the room — continuing a motif from Episode 1, where Drake was being chased by Pinocchio — and take their seats at an adjacent table as the instrumental plays louder. A server comes in and places a cube of ice on each of their plates. A tray of red paint is left at the edge of the table, and one of the Pinnochios writes the word “Legacy” on the white tablecloth, before they each toss their ice cubes onto the table and leave their seats, and the server comes in and dumps a whole bucket of ice on the scrawled letters.

Editor’s picks

In the next scene, a young woman appears in a room and gives Drake a hug, before he launches into snippets of new upbeat, club-ready songs, before returning to the car and playing his new song featuring Cash Cobain. Drake was infamously slated to perform at Cash Cobain’s Slizzy Fest in New York last year, before overwhelming crowds caused the show to get shut down. Speaking to Rolling Stone about his collaboration with Bieber, Cobain said he had “some shit that was going to pop out” for the festival and that he “never got over that.” So, it’s good to see him back in tune with The Boy for this new single.

After the Cash Cobain snippet, we see Drake in what appears to be an Italian courtroom, surrounded by spectators, before a Pinocchio figure appears. Drake quickly scrambles out of the room and heads to the club, where new songs featuring Yeat and pop singer Julia Wolf are playing. At the end of the stream, Drake confronts three Pinocchio figures before the screen cuts to the title page with an inscripted tribute to the late designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away earlier today.

The stream caps off a week where Drake returned to podcast host Bobbi Althoff’s new show Not This Again, where he offered little in terms of details about new music but, as some fans pointed out online, might have alluded to episode 3 of Iceman.

Trending Stories

Iceman is set to be Drake’s first solo release since his widely publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar (as well as a sizeable portion of the mainstream rap world) that culminated with Lamar’s now infamous diss track “Not Like Us,” which, among other things, alleges that Drake “Likes them young” and is a “certified pedophile.” The track is at the center of Drake’s current lawsuit against UMG, in which he claims the label heavily promoted the track despite knowing it contained defamatory material. The lawsuit is currently in the discovery phase, with the possibility of a trial in summer 2026 in the event that both sides can’t reach a settlement.

‘I Find AI Very Cruel, It Is An Insult’, Shaan Reprimanded People Using AI To Recreate Old Songs, Deets Inside

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The use of AI is increasing with each passing day, and with it come its pros and cons. Now the voices of legendary singers are being cloned with the help of AI, and new versions of songs are being released, which are getting popular as well. Seeing this, popular Bollywood singer Shaan got angry and called it wrong and unethical, and severely reprimanded those people who are making songs in the voice of old singers using AI.

Shaan

Let us tell you that in the recent past, many such videos and songs have gone viral on social media, which were made using AI. Recently, people used AI to clone the voice of the title track of ‘Saiyara’. And then a new song of ‘Saiyara’ was made and released in the voice of singer Kishore Kumar. The song went viral and was liked a lot on social media, but this growing trend of ‘AI voice cloning’ has made people worried for authenticity.

Shaan

Shaan said that the songs or videos being made using AI are an insult to the artists and singers of the past. People are being cruel to them. Talking to one of the media houses, the singer said, ‘I find this AI very cruel when they try to make songs like ‘Ye gana agar Kishore da gaate, ye gana agar Mohammad Rafi gaate. What they sang in the 40s, 60s, and 80s was very different. So if they were singing today, it would be very different again.’

Shaan

Shaan further said, ‘It is wrong that you make that song as if they had sung that song. This is not necessary. You cannot create an AI of someone whose singing has been so dynamic. So it is wrong to take the tone of any four songs and make a lot of tracks and covers from it.’ Shaan called the audience ‘naasamajh’ because they mistook the voice of AI for the voice of a real singer. He urged music lovers not to listen to such AI tracks, but to enjoy the songs of Kishore Kumar, which he sang in his time.
