Ego Nwodim Says ‘SNL’ Was “Always Meant To Be A Stepping Stone”

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Ego Nwodim says she’s excited about moving on to new challenges, and that the NBC comedy show is a “stepping stone.”

Speaking on a panel titled “Cultural Impact: How Story, Style, and Strategy Shape What’s Next” at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City Wednesday, Nwodim addressed her recent SNL departure after seven seasons.

“There’s so much I want to do and SNL is always meant to be a stepping stone,” she said. “There’s so many ideas that I need to have time to create. I’m looking forward to doing that. So directing, more writing in a different capacity. Very excited. It’s an exciting thing.”

Nwodim’s decision not to return for the show’s 51st season, launching October 4, was one of the more surprising recent exits – her announcement came after the show’s cast line-up was thought to be settled. The turnover for the upcoming season was extensive: Before Nwodim’s announcement, the exits had already included Heidi Gardner (after eight seasons), Michal Longfellow (after three seasons), Devon Walker (after three seasons), Emil Wakim (after one season), and John Higgins, who was part of the Please Don’t Destroy troupe that joined the late-night show in 2021.

Nwodim announced on Instagram last week that she would not be back for another SNL season. “The hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight,” she wrote. “But after seven unforgettable seasons, I have decided to leave SNL. I am immensely grateful to Lorne [Michaels] for the opportunity, to my castmates, the writers, and the crew for their brilliance, support, and friendship. Week after week on that stage taught me more than I could have ever imagined, and I will carry those memories, and that laughter, with me always.”

Watch the panel discussion below. Nwodim’s “stepping stone” comments come at the 1:25 mark.

Frankie Muniz Turned Down SNL at 14

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

The NASCAR driver said his mom then told him, “No, no, you don’t understand. Like, this is a really big deal,” and that for about a week and a half, he had “every executive, every producer, everybody in the history of Fox TV, Regency TV going, ‘What are you doing?'”

But he stood his ground.

“I was like, I don’t back out of obligation,” Muniz recalled. “They’ve been airing my commercial saying I’m going to be cohosting.”

Ultimately, Bynes ended up not cohosting the Kids’ Choice Awards with Muniz, although she did serve as a presenter. The actor actually cohosted the show with LL Cool J, David Arquette and Mandy Moore, with Rosie O’Donnell serving as the main host.

And although Muniz did eventually meet Bynes and even starred alongside her in the 2002 movie Big Fat Liar—he’s yet to host SNL.

To look back at celebs who have made a splash on SNL, keep reading.

Saturday Night Live is shaking things up for season 51 with a new wave of talent, and Veronika Slowikowska is among the fresh faces joining the iconic cast. The 29-year-old comedian first caught attention with her surreal sketches on TikTok and Instagram, where her absurd humor and quick wit earned her a devoted following. Since then, she’s broken into television with roles in Davey & Jonesie’s Locker and Netflix’s Tires. Now, she’s ready to bring her unique comedic voice to Studio 8H.

Find out more about her below.

Veronika Is a Canadian Comedian from Barrie

Born in Barrie, Ontario, in 1995, Veronika studied at the Randolph College for the Performing Arts before joining the Canadian Film Centre’s Actors’ Conservatory.

She First Gained Attention Through Sketch Comedy and Online Videos

Before landing her spot on SNL, Veronika carved out a space for herself online through surreal, offbeat sketches on Instagram and TikTok. Her account, @veronika.is.stupid, has amassed more than a million followers thanks to her strange, relatable, and distinctly absurd humor. She often collaborates with fellow comedian Kyle Chase, and their quirky videos have become fan favorites across her social media platforms.

Her Breakout TV Role Came in Davey & Jonesie’s Locker

In 2024, Veronika starred in the Canadian sci-fi comedy Davey & Jonesie’s Locker, playing one of two best friends who travel through bizarre alternate universes.

She Appeared in the Netflix Comedy Tires

In 2024, Veronika landed a recurring role as Kelly in the Netflix workplace comedy Tires, which was created by and stars comedian Shane Gillis.

The series follows the chaotic ups and downs of a struggling auto shop, and Veronika’s character quickly became a fan favorite. The show was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and in July 2025 it was renewed for a third season.

She Called Joining Saturday Night Live a “Dream Come True”

When NBC announced the season 51 lineup, Veronika shared her excitement on Instagram, writing simply, “dream come true. See you Saturdays.”

Just before the official news broke, she appeared on the comedy podcast Take Your Shoes Off, where she playfully sidestepped a question about whether she hoped to land SNL. “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say,” she joked, before quickly adding, “Cut it, cut it, cut it! Don’t say anything!”

Please Don’t Destroy Splits as John Higgins Leaves SNL

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Please Don’t Destroy will no longer be operating as a trio on Saturday Night Live, as John Higgins has announced his decision to leave the show, where he’s been working as a writer since 2021. The other two PDD members, Ben Marshall and Martin Herlihy, will remain with the series — Marshall moving to a featured player role in the cast, while Herlihy will continue as a writer.

On Instagram, Higgins explained his decision to leave the show to focus on acting, saying that:

“I can’t believe how lucky I was to be a part of this show. It was my dream and I got to live it. And to do it with my two best friends and my dad was an unbelievable experience. Thank you to everyone who made my time there so special, it made this decision that much harder. But for now, I’m excited to pursue acting opportunities that I’ll announce soon but today I’m just grateful for everything we got to do. As that fat lil bear Winnie the Pooh once said, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Vulture reports that this doesn’t mean the end for Please Don’t Destroy as a group, with the three comedians continuing their current tour together as well as developing new movie ideas. Their first film, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, premiered on Peacock in 2023.

This news comes as the latest update on the SNL Season 51 cast, which has so far seen Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim, and Devon Walker exit while four new fresh faces join as featured players alongside Marshall. For now, let’s look back on PDD’s now-final SNL sketch from the Season 50 finale, featuring Scarlett Johansson and Bad Bunny.

‘SNL’ Stars Bowen Yang, Marcello Hernández, More React to Cast Exodus

by jummy84 September 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Amid the cast shake-up at Saturday Night Live, current and former stars are sharing their reactions to the news ahead of season 51.

Last week, it was revealed that Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and Emil Wakim have exited the long-running NBC sketch comedy series — the most departures since 2022, when eight people left SNL ahead of season 48.

Some of those leaving took to their respective social media accounts to announce their departures, leading other current and former SNL stars to react in the comments.

Longfellow shared on Instagram that he’s leaving after three seasons. Bowen Yang responded to his post, writing, “Jesus WAS Chinese. I love you Michael.” The Wicked actor was referencing Longfellow’s claim during one of his previous Weekend Update segments.

Marcello Hernández also shared, “Love bro, thank you for letting me cfb whenever, my roommate,” to which Longfellow replied, “the ps5, shes yours now brother.”

Wakim added, “Yellow room forever u can play as many bones songs as u want.”

Molly Shannon, who was a castmember on SNL from 1995 to 2001 and returned to host in 2007 and 2023, also commented on Longfellow’s post, “You RULE michael. So honored and happy to have gotten to meet you and work with you. Congratulations on an excellent run on SNL! love talking to you when I was there. Wishing you so much continued success.”

As for Walker, who is also departing the NBC comedy show after three seasons, Chloe Fineman wrote under his post on Instagram, “I’ll miss being your pregnant wife all the time!!!!!” Gardner also commented, “I love you.”

Shannon added, “So nice meeting you Devon! Wishing you so much continued success.”

Wakim, who is exiting SNL after one season, previously shared on social media that it wasn’t his choice to exit the show. Former castmember Punkie Johnson, who left the show last year, responded, “Omg at first glance I thought this was a birthday post…this is really truly surprising…I’m glad you are focusing on the good and are proud of yourself and the work you put in not many people can say they were on SNL and for the 50th in legendary… You a legend baby… Outside ain’t bad. Welcome back.”

Fineman also commented, “Your such a stat and ill miss sitting next to the best dressed man at table read!!!”

Gardner, who was a castmember on SNL for eight seasons, has yet to comment on her departure on social media.

Executive producer Lorne Michaels and castmember Kenan Thompson previously teased that cast changes were likely. It’s unclear if more people are expected to leave the show ahead of the season 51 premiere on Oct. 4.

Why Are Cast Members Leaving ‘SNL’ Before Season 51? Their Departures – Hollywood Life

Two months before its season 51 premiere, Saturday Night Live lost multiple cast members, including one long-running star. In just one week, the cast departures shocked fans as many wondered why these comedians were leaving SNL.

Below, Hollywood Life is breaking down everything we know so far about the reasons behind the SNL cast departures and who’s leaving.

Is SNL Ending?

No, SNL is not ending before its 51st season. The new season premieres on October 4, 2025.

Which Cast Members Are Leaving SNL?

The following comedians are leaving SNL before season 51:

Heidi is the only one who has yet to publicly comment on her SNL exit. She was with the sketch comedy series for eight seasons.

Why Is the Cast Leaving SNL? Departure Reasons

Devon was the first to confirm his departure from SNL in an Instagram carousel post, which featured a screenshot from a Text Edit note. The message read, in part, “Me and the show did three years together, and sometimes, it was really cool. Sometimes, it was toxic as hell. But we did what we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction. We made a f**ked up lil family.”

Devon labeled his note,  “wait..did he quit or did he get fired?” leaving the reason behind his exit up in the air. However, Emil revealed in his own statement that he was told he would not return for season 51, implying that he and the others may have been fired.

“I won’t be returning to SNL next year,” Emil confirmed in his Instagram statement. “It was a gut punch of a call to get, but I’m so grateful for my time there.”

Michael also expressed that his release from the show was a bummer for him. He wrote in an Instagram carousel, “Will not be returning for a 4th season at SNL. Wish I was, but so it goes. It was the best three years of my life so far. I feel nothing but gratitude for the experience and everyone there. Lorne, you gave me the greatest job in the world and changed my life. You even put my mom on TV. Thank you doesnt begin to cover it, but thank you. I’ll miss it all, but I’ll miss the friends I made and seeing them everyday the most.”

Despite the heartbreaking news, it’s actually normal for SNL to cycle through different comedians. After almost each season, the show hires new faces once veterans leave.

Who Is in the SNL Season 51 Cast?

Only James Austin Johnson was confirmed to be returning for season 51 by Lorne Michaels, himself. The rest of the cast presumably still features the following names who were in season 50:

Heidi Gardner has exited Saturday Night Live after eight seasons on the sketch comedy series. The actress’ departure came in August 2025 amid a round of other cast members exits, and Heidi has yet to comment on the situation at the time of publication.

After eight years on SNL, Heidi was the longest-running female cast member of that cast. So, since her time on the show has come to an end, here’s five things you must know about the Leo star here.

Like many other SNL alums, Heidi was a member of L.A.’s The Groundlings improv troupe

Heidi was well prepared for any improvisational situations on live TV, as she was a member of the same comedy school and theater that produced other SNL alums like Will Ferrell, Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph.

Saturday Night Live is Heidi’s biggest break yet

She caught the attention of the show big wigs as part of the  New Faces Characters showcase at Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival in July. According to her mom Erny Huelke‘s Facebook account, she auditioned for SNL three weeks ago and got hired by the show’s creator and executive producer. “Lorne Micheals, called her and told her she was hilarious, her sketches were awesome and she will thrive on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!!!!” she wrote.

Heidi’s primary professional background has been in voice work

Heidi was the voice behind Cooch/Gloria on the Sony Crackle online show SuperMansion. Heidi also voiced Yasmin in the 2015 animated TV  show Bratz.

Heidi is a sports megafan

She hails from Kansas City, Missouri, and according to her Groundlings bio, is a huge fan of her hometown’s professional baseball and football teams, the KC Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs. Since the city doesn’t have an NBA franchise, her heart lies with LeBron James and wherever he’s playing, which right now is with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Heidi is a loving pet owner

She owns three cats named Tweaky, Cubby Bear and  Marshall. They are her absolute darlings and she loves to post pics of the critters on her Instagram account.

During the 2022 season, Michael, Molly Kearney, Marcello Hernandez and Devon Walker were added to the SNL cast. But three years later, Devon and Michael confirmed their departures from the comedy series ahead of its season 51 premiere.

“Will not be returning for a 4th season at SNL,” Michael captioned an Instagram post. “Wish I was but, so it goes. It was the best three years of my life so far. I feel nothing but gratitude for the experience and everyone there. Lorne, you gave me the greatest job in the world and changed my life. You even put my mom on TV. Michael was featured in a Netflix special

Michael was one of eight comedians chosen for Netflix’s Introducing… at the Netflix Is A Joke Fest in early 2022. His 7-minute segment featured a plethora of hilarious jokes that the audience loved. He was the fifth rising comedian to be featured in the standup showcase, hosted by Mo Amer.

Michael competed on a reality show before ‘SNL’

Michael was a contestant on the NBC competition series Bring the Funny which aired in 2019. Hosted by Amanda Seales, the show featured comedy acts performing in front of audiences to win $250,000. Michael was eliminated in Week 9 and came in 7th place. Ironically, one of the judges was Kenan Thompson.

Which ‘SNL’ Cast Members Are Leaving? All Departures Before Season 51 – Hollywood Life

The Saturday Night Live cast is going through a major shakeup right before season 51 airs on October 4, 2025. All in one week, multiple stars were reported to be leaving the show, and viewers were particular shocked about one cast member’s departure. So, what’s going on at the NBC sketch comedy series, and who’s leaving SNL?

Below, Hollywood Life has rounded up the SNL cast departures, the fate of the show and more.

Is Saturday Night Live Canceled?

No, SNL has not been canceled and is still moving forward with its 51st season this fall.

Who Is Leaving SNL? All the Cast Departures

The following names are the cast members who are leaving SNL:

Devon’s departure was the first to make headlines, and he addressed it in a social media note. In his Instagram statement, the comedian alleged the environment in Studio 8H was “toxic” sometimes.

“Me and the show did three years together, and sometimes, it was really cool,” Devon began in his statement, which was a screenshot of a Text Edit note from a computer. “Sometimes, it was toxic as hell. But we did what we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction. We made a f**ked up lil family.”

Why Are These SNL Cast Members Leaving the Show?

No one from NBC nor the former SNL cast members have confirmed why they left the series. However, it’s normal for actors to come and go because the show introduces new faces every season. It’s also possible that some cast members were fired, though.

Devon’s Text Edit note was labeled, “wait..did he quit or did he get fired?” but it’s still unclear if he chose to leave SNL or if he was let go.

Emil also addressed his departure from SNL in a statement. The comedian revealed that he was called about his departure, so he may have been released from the show.

“I won’t be returning to SNL next year,” the comedian announced via Instagram. “It was a gut punch of a call to get, but I’m so grateful for my time there.”

Heidi has not addressed her shocking departure, but multiple outlets reported that she was leaving. The actress was with SNL for eight seasons and became the longest tenured female cast member.
