Avatar: Fire and Ash first reactions are in as critics single out “unimaginable” and “bold” sequel filmmaking

by jummy84 December 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The first wave of reactions have arrived for Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead of the release of the third entry in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise later this month – and early signs suggest the new film could be another winner.

Although full reviews for the film are still under embargo for the time being, critics have begun posting their takes on social media, and the vast majority have been very positive so far.

“Three films in and I still can’t get over how magical the [Avatar] movies are,” wrote Perri Nemiroff of Collider, adding that Fire and Ash “truly feels like a ride.”

She continued: “I couldn’t believe how quickly I was pulled back into the world of Pandora and swept up in the situation. And once that happens, there’s a noticeable increase in complexity in quite a few aspects of the production.”

Critic Courtney Howard called the film “a glorious saga” and added: “Bold, brilliant & awesome in every way, this is what movie theatres were built for,” while writer Michael Lee claimed that it “pushes technical boundaries in unimaginable ways”.

Avatar: Fire and Ash 20th Century Studios

Chris Killian of ComicBook.com wrote that the film was a “damn good James Cameron movie!” and continued: “What else do you need to know? Go see it in 3-D in the best theatre you can find because it’ll blow your mind. That’s what JC does. Every bit as gorgeous as you’d expect, Fire and Ash is also easily the most INTENSE Avatar movie yet.”

Some viewers noted that the film would work best as a double bill with previous entry The Way of the Water, suggesting that it might be best to rewatch that one before going to see the new film.

“It feels like a Part 2 of that story,” wrote YouTuber Adam Hlaváč. “I was blown away by the visuals, the score, and many performances. But goddammit, you gotta see this thing in Dolby 3D! It’s unreal how immersive it is.”

Jesse Hassenger added that it was: “The first James Cameron sequel that feels kinda like a regular follow-up rather than an innovative re-envisioning of its predecessor’s world,” but added that “it also just casually drops ~3-4 of the best/coolest action sequences of the year and I was rapt the whole time.”

While most of the reactions skewed very positive, a couple of them did also come with one or two reservations. For example, Eric Goldman wrote that while it was “another visually fantastic epic” and that “Cameron delivers spectacle like no one else”, he had “some issues with the third act and Way of Water remains the peak”.

Meanwhile, Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture wrote that while it “delivers the most emotional moments of the franchise” and is “the most epic in both scope and runtime”, the film contained “a few questionable choices” and was at times “frustrating”.

The reactions were pretty much unanimous in their praise for the visuals, but there were some critics who seemed otherwise unimpressed, with Variety’s Clayton Davis calling it the “most bloated entry yet”.

He added: “The dialogue often makes you cringe, and the story essentially devolves into an episode of My Two Dads meets James Cameron’s take on A Pyromaniac’s Love Story.”

Kaitlyn Booth also wrote that “story-wise, it’s the same ‘capture/rescue’ plot over and over again with some laughable dialogue thrown in the middle” adding that “the runtime is criminal, and if you have eye issues, avoid the 3D”.

The film arrives in UK cinemas on Friday 19th December, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet among the stars to reprise their roles from previous instalments and, Oona Chaplin, Edie Falco, and David Thewlis joining the cast.

The official synopsis teased: “A year after settling in with the Metkayina clan, Jake and Neytiri’s family grapples with grief after Neteyam’s death.

“They encounter a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan, also called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader, Varang, who has allied with Jake’s enemy, Quaritch, as the conflict on Pandora escalates to devastating consequences.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash will debut in cinemas on Friday 19th December 2025 in the UK.

Gay Meat Releases New Single “Love For Fun”: Listen

by jummy84 November 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Gay Meat: Not necessarily a band name you want to go around recommending to people willy-nilly, but music worth recommending nonetheless. Ex-Museum Mouth frontman Karl Kuehn has been releasing catchy, pensive, emo-leaning indie rock under the moniker for a while, and now he’s got a new label home at Skeletal Lightning, who are releasing Gay Meat’s upcoming debut album Blue Water sometime early in the new year. In the meantime, Kuehn’s sharing the record’s lead single “Love For Fun” today.

As Kuehn tells it, “Love For Fun” was written in the aftermath of a fling with an older guy, which he realized in retrospect was doomed from the start. The track is a slow burner that reaches an epic swell in its final chorus — with some subtle background vocals courtesy of Jeff Rosenstock — as if to mimic the a-ha moment of recognizing that the “love” in question really was just “fun” all along. Listen below.

Ice Spice Drops New Single ‘Big Guy’ for ‘The SpongeBob Movie’ Sequel

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

The rapper will also voice a character in the animated film, set for release on Dec. 17

Ice Spice shared a new single, “Big Guy,” written and recorded for upcoming animated sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants. A video for the spit-fire track will follow later today.

“Off the wake up, I’m feeling my best/ Big things ’bout to happen today,” the rapper intones on the upbeat single. “I bend over, I do my lil’ stretch/ I woke up feeling a brand new way/ Ain’t a jellyfish, but I’m the catch.”

“Being part of the SpongeBob soundtrack is such a full circle moment for me,” Ice Spice said in a statement. “It’s crazy to see my music in a movie that’s been part of so many people’s childhoods, including mine.”

Along with creating an original track for the film, Ice Spice voices to one of the characters in the movie, marking her first-ever voice cameo.

“Big Guy” follows on the heels of Ice Spice’s recent singles, “Pretty Privilege” and “Baddie Baddie.” The latter song marked Ice Spice’s first solo release since she dropped Y2K!: I’m Just A Girl (Deluxe) last December. It was produced by the rapper’s longtime collaborator RiotUSA and samples M.I.A.’s 2012 hit “Bad Girls.” She later dropped an Evil Twins-directed music video for the track.

Trending Stories

Since releasing Y2K!: I’m Just A Girl (Deluxe), Ice Spice collaborated with several artists. Earlier this year, she teamed up with Latto on “Gyatt,” which marked the first collaboration between the two rappers and effectively squashed rumors of the pair’s feud. She also made her film debut in Spike Lee’s most recent film, Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants hits theaters on Dec. 17. The film’s official synopsis notes, “Desperate to be a big guy, SpongeBob sets out to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs by following The Flying Dutchman – a mysterious swashbuckling ghost pirate – on a seafaring comedy-adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the deep sea, where no Sponge has gone before.”

Lone Releases New Single “Sickly, Sweetly Summer Movie”

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Matt Cutler returned last month with “Ascension.png,” his first new song as Lone in nearly two years. The British electronic producer is keeping up that momentum today with another new one called “Sickly, Sweetly Summer Movie,” which, respectfully, is an odd title to give a song you’re releasing in mid-November.

“Sickly, Sweetly Summer Movie”‘s enjoyability isn’t too dependent on warm weather, though, because it isn’t really concerned with the earth realm at all. In a message to his Bandcamp customers, Lone describes the song as “a warped lullaby that descends into a nightmare” evoking some “real fever dream vibes.” There are a lot of celestial synths at play, interrupted only by some nondescript vocals — “me, way past my bedtime,” Lone adds — before its final moments get ever-so-subtly darker. Robyn Shares New Single “Dopamine”: Watch The Video

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Robyn has been sending us warning shots suggesting the follow-up to 2018’s Honey is imminent, and now she’s given us what seems to be that new album’s lead single. We don’t know anything yet about the Swedish alt-pop pioneer’s new LP, other than the fact that she’s now releasing her music through Young rather than her own Konichiwa Records. But based on the sound of “Dopamine” — her first new song in seven years — it’s going to be some of her most direct, accessible music in years.

The track, a collaboration with songwriter and producer Klas Åhlund, is pure synth-pop bliss. We’re introduced to layers of percolating keyboards and digitally processed vocals before Robyn’s unvarnished voice comes through, full of passion and longing. “I just need to know that I’m not alone,” she sings. “I know it’s just dopamine, but it feels so real to me.”

Robyn’s statement:

Everyone has a phone where they see their heart rate, and we’re learning how to decode our emotions through the hormones and chemical substances in our bodies. It’s almost like we don’t even accept that we’re human anymore, like we’re trying to shoot ourselves out of it and explain every single thing – which I think is great, but that’s also why the world is shit, this idea that you can figure out and win life or something. The doubleness of Dopamine is having an emotion that is super real, super strong, intense, enjoyable or painful, and at the same time knowing that this is just a biological process in my body—and then not to choose religion or science. To just accept that they’re there together and to be able to go in between.

Robyn lets her personality show in director Marili Andre’s “Dopamine” video, which you can watch below.

Refused members announce debut album as Backengrillen with menacing single ‘A Hate Inferior’

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Members of Refused have launched a new project, Backengrillen, and announced their self-titled debut album. Listen to the single ‘A Hate Inferior’ below.

  • READ MORE: Refused tell us about their final tour, winning over fans from ‘The Bear’ and the future of hardcore

The Swedish hardcore punk outfit are due to play their final-ever live shows next month, following a recent run of last dates in the UK and Europe.

When announcing their farewell gigs, Refused revealed that a new group had “been born within the band”. Now, it’s been confirmed that Backengrillen will release their debut album on January 23, 2026 via Svart Records (pre-order here).

The experimental project features three out of four Refused members (singer Dennis Lyxzén, bassist Magnus Flagge and drummer David Sandström), as well as the non-Refused saxophonist Mats Gustafsson.

“Backengrillen’s music is a paean to chaos and destruction,” the band explained in a statement. “The basic idea is to take a death/doom metal, or noiserock riff and play it until it loses meaning and then break it apart like a ravenous cat would a tiny forest mouse.”

They went on to describe the LP as being “filled to the brim with the self-hatred endemic to the province of Västerbotten from whence the members hail”.

“The record was written on a Thursday during their first ever rehearsal, performed live on a Friday and recorded on a Saturday, so what you’re hearing is raw, stupid, gut instinct music played by seasoned purveyors of hardcore punk, metal, free jazz, noise et cetera,” the outfit continued.

Backengrillen confirmed that their second album was already “in the making”, describing it as “less stupid, more ugly”. They added: “Stay tuned and fuck the pigs.”

The band have previewed their five-track debut with a menacing 10-minute single, ‘A Hate Inferior’. Tune in above.

The tracklist for Backengrillen’s self-titled debut album is:

1. ‘A Hate Inferior’
2. ‘Dör För långsamt’
3. ‘Repeater II’
4. ‘Backengrillen’
5. ‘Socialism Or Barbarism’

Sandström had previously explained that the members wanted to be in “a band with no baggage, no fans to please, limited only by our wildest musical hopes and dreams”, adding: “We’re very excited about getting around to taming this new wild beast.”

Backengrillen previously played live together in early 2023.

Refused’s final-ever dates will take place in Sweden, with performances scheduled for Gothenburg, Norrköping, Stockholm and Umeå next month. These are set to follow a run of gigs in Australia.

Speaking to NME at Mad Cool 2025 this summer, Sandström explained: “We have other plans for our future, and Refused doesn’t fit in there.”

Lyxzén elaborated: “What we’re doing with Refused is very physical and quite demanding. I already feel like it’s pushing it. In 10 years, I’ll be 62, and that’s not a good look to try and prance around in tight pants.”

The band also discussed the future of the hardcore scene, and how featuring on The Bear’s soundtrack had won them some new fans. Watch the video interview in full below.

Refused’s winter 2026 Sweden dates are:

DECEMBER
11 – Gothenburg, Sweden – Pustervik (with Division Of Laura Lee and Spøgelse)
12 – Gothenburg, Sweden – Pustervik (with Rome Is Not A Town and Darla_
13 – Norrköping, Sweden – Arbis (with Fireside and Lost Faith)
17 – Stockholm, Sweden – Fallan (with Abhinanda and Twin Pigs)
18 – Stockholm, Sweden – Fallan (with Youth Code and Harrowed)
19 – Umeå, Sweden – Vaven (with Youth Code, Left Hand Of Darkness and Millencolin)
20 – Umeå, Sweden – Vaven (with Fireside, Mattias Alkberg, Top 10 Babies and Deppa)
21 – Umeå, Sweden – Vaven (with Abhinanda, Final Exit, Nix and Dream Warriors)

Kehlani Doesn’t Want to Throw a Relationship ‘Out the Window’ on New Single: Stream It Now

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Kehlani isn’t ready to let a relationship go “Out the Window” on her new single that dropped on Friday (Nov. 7) via Atlantic Records.

She resurrects that old school R&B feel even on the “Out the Window” cover art, which was shot by photographer Markus Klinko, who also did the cover of Beyoncé’s 2003 debut album Dangerously in Love, Kelis’ 2003 album Tasty, Mariah Carey’s 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi and Mary J. Blige’s 2005 album The Breakthrough.

“Out the Window” arrives five months after “Folded,” which became Kehlani’s first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and first No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs this week (charts dated Nov. 8). They performed “Folded” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this week. And while they got Toni Braxton, Brandy, JoJo, Mario, Ne-Yo and Tank on the “Folded” remixes for the Homage Pack, Kehlani has also collaborated with Cardi B (“Safe” from Am I the Drama?), Mariah Carey (“Sugar Sweet” also with Shenseea from Here I Am), Leon Thomas (“Dirt on My Shoes” from Mutt Deluxe: Heel) and kwn (“Worst Behaviour” from With All Due Respect) this year.

Katy Perry Releases New Single ‘Bandaids’

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Katy Perry‘s new single “Bandaids” has her reflecting on the end of her marriage to actor Orlando Bloom. Equally as frightening and emotionally-taxing is the single’s matching “Final Destination”-style video where Perry finds her positive outlook on life — notably at the core of her “143” album and era — has run dry.

“It’s not what you did, it’s what you didn’t,” Perry sings in the introduction of the pop track. “You were there, but you weren’t.”

The video, directed by Christian Breslauer (SZA, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat), stitches together scenes where Perry’s carelessness leads her to nearly die — this ranges from electrocution (after leaving the “Light and Love Crystals” store) to car crashes and more.

At the end of the video, where Perry proclaims “if I had to do it all over again, I would still do it all over again,” she is left listening to the empowering chorus of her “Woman’s World” single at a gas station where she lights a cigarette and causes an explosion.

Perry and Bloom announced their split earlier this summer after nine years together. They are now co-parenting their daughter, Daisy Dove. In the video, Perry finds a moment of calm amid the anxiety of her near-death encounters when she spots a white daisy growing from the ground — another symbol reflecting her real-life state of mind.

“Bandaids” marks Perry’s first comeback following the release of her “143,” which she followed and supported with a global tour that concludes in Abu Dhabi on Dec. 7. The record — which featured 21 Savage, Kim Petras, Doechii and JID — debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 upon its release.
