Which ‘SNL’ Cast Members Are Leaving? All Departures Before Season 51 – Hollywood Life

The Saturday Night Live cast is going through a major shakeup right before season 51 airs on October 4, 2025. All in one week, multiple stars were reported to be leaving the show, and viewers were particular shocked about one cast member’s departure. So, what’s going on at the NBC sketch comedy series, and who’s leaving SNL?

Below, Hollywood Life has rounded up the SNL cast departures, the fate of the show and more.

Is Saturday Night Live Canceled?

No, SNL has not been canceled and is still moving forward with its 51st season this fall.

Who Is Leaving SNL? All the Cast Departures

The following names are the cast members who are leaving SNL:

Devon’s departure was the first to make headlines, and he addressed it in a social media note. In his Instagram statement, the comedian alleged the environment in Studio 8H was “toxic” sometimes.

“Me and the show did three years together, and sometimes, it was really cool,” Devon began in his statement, which was a screenshot of a Text Edit note from a computer. “Sometimes, it was toxic as hell. But we did what we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction. We made a f**ked up lil family.”

Why Are These SNL Cast Members Leaving the Show?

No one from NBC nor the former SNL cast members have confirmed why they left the series. However, it’s normal for actors to come and go because the show introduces new faces every season. It’s also possible that some cast members were fired, though.

Devon’s Text Edit note was labeled, “wait..did he quit or did he get fired?” but it’s still unclear if he chose to leave SNL or if he was let go.

Emil also addressed his departure from SNL in a statement. The comedian revealed that he was called about his departure, so he may have been released from the show.

“I won’t be returning to SNL next year,” the comedian announced via Instagram. “It was a gut punch of a call to get, but I’m so grateful for my time there.”

Heidi has not addressed her shocking departure, but multiple outlets reported that she was leaving. The actress was with SNL for eight seasons and became the longest tenured female cast member.

Wednesday Season 2 Predictions

Wednesday returned with the first part of season 2 this month, and the show brought with it new and familiar faces along with a new mystery for our endearingly weird protagonist.

The first four episodes found Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) having psychic visions of her roommate, Enid (Emma Myers), dying and blaming Wednesday for her death. Meanwhile, a flock of crows is murdering local townsfolk, including the death of Donovan Galpin (Jamie McShane), the former sheriff of Jericho and the father of Tyler (Hunter Doohan), the Hyde who went on a killing spree last season and as a result is now a patient at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Elsewhere, Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez), now a student at Nevermore Academy, sets loose a zombie he calls Slurp (Owen Painter), who also used to be a student there.

In episode 4, we learn that Willow Hill employee Judi Spannagel (Heather Matarazzo) is not only the person behind the bird attacks but also running a program called LOIS (Long-term Outcast Integration Study) that’s doing experiments on Outcasts. Meanwhile, Laurel Gates/Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci) returns to set Tyler free, only to be killed by him moments later. The fourth episode also ends with what appears to be Wednesday’s death after Tyler (as Hyde) pushes her out a window.

Among the many other new characters introduced this season: Nevermore student Agnes DeMille (Evie Templeton), Wednesday’s fangirl/stalker; Morticia Addams’ (Catherine-Zeta Jones) mother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley); new Nevermore principal Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi); Dr. Rachael Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton), who runs Willow Hill and meets an untimely end; Ron Kruger (Anthony Michael Hall), a Phoenix Cadet Master who goes head-to-head with Wednesday, also before meeting his own untimely end; Miss Capri (Billie Piper), Nevermore’s new music teacher; and Professor Orloff (Christopher Lloyd), a Nevermore teacher. Returning to the show are Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, Lurch (with Joonas Suotamo taking over the role from George Burcea) and Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez, now a series regular).

The Last Of Us star Bella Ramsey has cautioned critics of the hit HBO series not to watch season three – see what they had to say below.

The first season of HBO’s The Last Of Us adapted the plot of the hit video game, while the second season began to tell the story of The Last Of Us Part II. In the series, Ramsey – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – portrays Ellie, while Pedro Pascal plays Joel Miller.

The second season of The Last Of Us may have inspired millions to try out the video game series but viewership of the finale was down 56 per cent compared to season one. There was also tension between long-term fans of the game and newcomers to the series. However, the hit show has been nominated for 16 awards at the 2025 Emmys.

Several points of contention among critics have been aimed at Ramsey since the show’s debut, some of which point at their acting chops, while others have slammed the show’s casting, arguing that Ramsey looks nothing like the character they’re based on.

The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann also said they weren’t bothered about casting actors who looked exactly like their game counterparts. “It’s just different priorities and how you approach it,” Druckmann explained. “We need people to really capture the essence of those characters and we value performance over anything else.”

In a recent appearance on The Awardist podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Ramsey addressed the hate ad admitted that they try their best to “steer clear” of the show’s “louder critics”: “There’s nothing I can do about it anyway. The show is out. There’s nothing that can be changed or altered. So I’m like, there’s not really any point in reading or looking at anything.”

“People are of course entitled to their opinions. But it doesn’t affect the show, it doesn’t affect how the show continues or anything in any way. They’re very separate things to me. So no, I just don’t really engage.”

Ramsey went on to tell the show’s critics that they aren’t being forced to watch season three: “You don’t have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again,” they said. “If you do want to watch it, hope you enjoy it.”

Season three will include Ramsey’s character Ellie, but will primarily focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby – the antagonist of season two – and her retelling of the events that transpired in season two.

In July, it was announced that The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann would be stepping away as co-showrunner on the HBO adaptation to focus on making more games. Fellow Naughty Dog employee Halley Gross (who worked as a writer and producer on the TV show) also confirmed she’d be leaving the project. It means Mazin will have total creative control over the future of The Last Of Us.

Season two of The Last Of Us scored a four-star review from NME, with Nick Levine writing: “At its best, The Last Of Us is unsettling enough to make you question your own hypothetical moral code. When every day is about survival and making sense of post-apocalyptic chaos, does taking a life become easier, or somehow even harder? This show doesn’t just go deep narratively – it also cuts deep emotionally.”

‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ Star Ashby Gentry Talks Season 2

SPOILER ALERT: This piece spoils Season 2 of My Life With the Walter Boys which is now streaming on Netflix.

My Life With the Walter Boys has galloped back onto Netflix with its second season, and Ashby Gentry’s Alex Walter returns after a transformative — in more ways than one — summer training in rodeo riding.

The opening scene of Season 2 sees Cole Walter (Noah LaLonde) pick up his younger brother from the bus back home from Montana, plunging viewers right back into the tension between the two counterparts of the show’s main love triangle. Add Nikki Rodriguez’s Jackie back into the mix, and the show is off to the races, but this isn’t Alex’s first rodeo, as he and Jackie were together romantically last season before she abruptly left to go back to New York.

“With those changes in Season 2, I think it makes Alex a genuine contender for Jackie, which is important because the show is, to some degree, a love triangle, and you want to believe both possibilities. At the same time too, it’s a testament to his confidence and his personal growth in response to the breakup that he went through or the trauma, whatever you want to call it,” Gentry told Deadline of Alex’s glow up and new attitude this season. “I think he needs the confidence to put what happened behind him and really go after her, because he loves her. The façade enables him to act authentically in a weird way. If he didn’t have this ‘glow up,’ quote, unquote, with rodeo, and if he wasn’t manufacturing a more conventionally masculine appearance, perhaps he never would find the courage to pursue what he really wants, which is to be with her. I think it’s as simple as that. I think that’s why he goes after her is he just still loves her, and that’s it. I think if he could help it, he probably would. [It’s] certainly not convenient.

In the below interview, Gentry unpacks his research into saddle bronc riding, which Alex takes up in Season 2, how he balanced Alex’s new confidence with the care and compassion he showed in Season 1, the dynamic between Alex and his riding coach Blake Hartford (Natalie Sharp) and more.

DEADLINE: What would you say you learned from playing Alex in the first season, and what did you want to bring to the role in Season 2 that we didn’t get to see in season one?

ASHBY GENTRY: Doing this show feels, in a way like grad school, for me. I went to acting school, so I have a basic understanding of ways of approaching this. But I’ve said before, there’s no class [about] how to be on a TV show, and most of my teachers have never been on one, so Season 1 was just a learning curve of how to go to set every day, how to prepare, how to hang out, how to go out on the weekend and not have it ruin everything. Little things that.

 In Season 2, with regards to my process, so to speak, I wanted to prioritize taking care of myself a little bit more, because so much of Season 2 and what happens hinges on this physical transformation, so I had to be really careful about sleeping. [Laughs]. And eating and watching my skin. I’m so conditioned to not pay attention to those things because typically, working as an actor, one wants to be unself-conscious, and usually you want to put your vanity aside, so it was really difficult to work on this season where the vanity was a part of the story so much. That was a really big learning curve. I’m grateful to have gotten to do that because I feel like it has set me up for success in future roles where I do have a physical transformation or something like that. I’m ready for the American Psycho thing. I’m set up by Walter Boys Season 2.

DEADLINE: Did you have input on Alex’s glow up? How do you feel like that added to his overall arc this season?

GENTRY: I didn’t have input, though I was in charge of it, which is great. That’s what I get paid for. It’s so funny to have so many people earnestly ask me about a glow-up. It’s a real talking point. I met with our showrunner a few weeks before shooting, and she said, “You’re going to have a glow up.” And I said, “What?” We discussed different things that were gonna happen, and a lot of it was just treating Alex like a real object of desire. That was not how he was written in Season 1. If you read the scripts, there is a very clear difference between how [Alex and Cole are] both described. I believe the words used for Cole getting out of the pool were literally “Water drips off his perfect, nearly naked body.” I feel so much empathy for Noah [LaLonde] for having to handle that pressure. That was not at all how I was described in the show, and so I didn’t view him as this serious, conventional object of desire, more as like an object of admiration.

DEADLINE: That first scene where you step off the bus and Noah/Cole is there to pick you up. How do you feel like that scene situates their bond for season two and that tension that’s still there between them?

GENTRY: First of all, that bus was scary, too. There were some close calls on that bus, but it was cool. It was really old school, but it was a weird road we were shooting on. Everybody was safe.

I think Alex is suspicious of [Cole], as he always has been. It’s sort of like the scene where Cole and Jack are by the fire [in Season 1], and Alex comes in and looks at them. He doesn’t necessarily see anything happen, but he’s super suspect. I don’t know if that will go away, and they’ve been through a lot together. It’s funny to watch Noah in that scene because he’s so chill, and that’s just so Cole to be, to be Mr. Hollywood. And Alex doesn’t give a sh*t about maintaining the appearance as much.

DEADLINE: For those bronc riding scenes, did you train to do that? I know you have stunt doubles. I saw that in the credits. How much of that did you get to do?

GENTRY: I spent the hiatus [between seasons] researching all that stuff, which is honestly so cool when it’s done well, it looks beautiful. We had talked in Season 1 about making Alex a bronc rider because a lot of the drivers on our show and a lot of the crew in Calgary are rodeo people. And I would ask them, “Hey, if you got your heart broken, what rodeo sport would you do?” And they [said], “Saddle bronc riding.” So I told [showrunner] Melanie [Halsall] “Hey, what if we made him a bronc rider? What do you think about that?” She was like, “Oh, that’s a good idea.” So I researched a lot of it over summer, how to do it and stuff, but when it comes to actually doing it, I’m not allowed, technically, to do any of it while we’re shooting. What I did do is — this was [director] Jason [Priestley’s] idea. He put me on a bucking machine, and they turned it up to, like a four or five, and I would stay on there so he could get tight coverage on me, and you’re only supposed to be on there for eight seconds.

I remember the second time we shot it, I was on there for like two, three minutes, and I was just about ready to fall off when he called cut. I was like, “Holy sh*t.” There are muscles that they work out that I didn’t even know existed. I was so sore that I had to — I’m not even joking — I literally had to pick my leg up to step into my trailer after I got done. And then he didn’t even use it! Classic Jason. He did use the first time I ever was on the bucking machine. We work with a lot of professional saddle bronc riders, full-time saddle bronc riders that ride in the NFR and the Calgary stampede and everything. They’re in the background, and they’re doing the stunts and stuff. So it’s really like working with NFL-level athletes, and it’s really cool. I learned a lot from them, and it’s such a unique world that I otherwise would not have gotten to step into.

DEADLINE: Blake [Hartford], Alex’s bronc-riding coach, provides some competition for Jackie, but Alex can’t move on from her. How does that factor into your arc for Season 2 especially given what happens at the end. Is there still a chance for them to be together?

GENTRY: I hope so. I love Blake and Alex. I think they’re so cute. Natalie [Sharp], who plays Blake, is so great. She’s so fun to work with. I would like to see them together, just to get more of her. Blake provides Alex an opportunity to mature in more ways than one, and maybe even faster than he’s ready to mature. I grit my teeth watching him fumble [his shot with] Blake, because I love Blake, but he’s not over Jackie.

Hopefully, in a future season. He’s kinda got a lot of options. There’s this one background actress who he’s with throughout the show that we don’t even know who that is. Who’s that? [He’s] also got Maria played by Riele Downs, who’s also amazing. I’m very fortunate I work with a lot of great actresses.

DEADLINE: Even in the end, when you’re at the final competition, and Alex gets the the role Blake’s dad’s team, that, chemistry is still there. Your wink at her towards the end makes it seem like it’s not over.

GENTRY: No I don’t think so. I was nervous about that wink when I did it. I remember doing it being like, “Oh, people are gonna say on Tiktok that this gives the ick,” or whatever it was. I was like, “Oh, God.” I made several jokes about that while we were shooting.

DEADLINE: There’s also Kiley (Mya Lowe), too. Does Alex at all have any idea that she likes him?

GENTRY: I feel like he wouldn’t because he usually does something when he knows. Which is a testament to Alex. I was talking with someone, but they made the point that sometimes they felt like, Alex just kind of got to Jackie first, and that’s why she was with him, which may be true, may be not true, but he did get to her first. He does move quick, so I feel like if he did have any inkling of a feeling for Kiley, he would act on it. That’s my guess. Same with her, I think, because both of them have been confronted about it, and they both denied it. I don’t know if we’ll see that or not.

DEADLINE: He comes to her aid in a time she really needs him at the end of Season 2. Does he realize how his behavior has affected her and their friendship?

GENTRY: That scene was so fun to shoot because we were in this small apartment, and it felt like we were in a different show for a second, which is always fun. I would like to say he gets it, but if you watch it, the way he the way he acknowledges it is very like nonchalantly, which I don’t know if that was a choice on their part. There were definitely takes in there that were much more remorseful, where it was like, “Oh my god, I can’t believe I did that.” But this the take they went with was one where he’s kind of like, “Oh, bummer. Sorry about that.” Alex is so funny because he’s such a contradiction. He’s supposed to be the smart, sensitve, sweet guy, and yet he’s such an idiot and such a boy sometimes. So maybe that, maybe that’s what took over in that moment.

DEADLINE: Alex and Jackie give it another shot at being together. What would you say was the turning point this season where he stops being mad and starts to think maybe they could work? She finds his horse Murphy, which seems to spark some things.

GENTRY: You totally reminded me of that. I forgot about that whole part of the show, which is a huge thing for Alex. That’s actually one of my favorite scenes in the whole show, is when, firstly, when she finds the horse in the forest, walks it back, and then he sees the horse through the window and then runs out to her. That feels like one of the moments of the show where it almost breaks tone, where it almost feels like a different show than the typical Walter Boys that you see. I think that moment is so genuine on all parts where it’s like Sarah [Rafferty], Nikki [Rodriguez] and myself are all really experiencing this joy that this family member, which is Murphy, has returned. I love the moment where Alex hugs Jackie and realizes what he’s doing.

DEADLINE: I was going to ask you specifically about the hug.

GENTRY: I think the turning point probably happens before, given that he fumbles Blake, and then they have that whole exchange before the barn catches on fire. That would indicate that he’s clearly realized he’s not over Jackie prior to that. I think what causes him to take action is her returning the horse because maybe his love language is acts of service or something. That really means a lot to him.

DEADLINE: Jackie brings Alex a sci-fi/fantasy book, and he says ‘I’m not into that anymore.’ Then he’s reading it later on and explaining it to a bunch of girls. The broader question is how does she maybe crack through the façade, if you will, that he puts up, and how does she bring the real him back?

GENTRY: There’s this French guy, Jacques Lacan, who talks about authenticity and fantasy and reality and the real me, the fake me, and all that stuff. His whole point is that even the fake me is the real me, like the parts of me that I present as facade are authentic to me. So it’s like I fake it in a way that’s real to me. And I think a lot of Alex’s façade is a true manifestation of his authentic confidence, and also an act that he puts up to deflect his real feelings for Jackie. Honestly, it’s like a merging of those two things.

DEADLINE: Alex and Nathan’s relationship sheds another light on Alex. They share a room, but this season when Nathan gets into his drama, Alex has some good advice for him. How does that reflects back onto him?

GENTRY: It’s important that we see that these people are all siblings. It’s huge. Most of them get the privilege of being an older and younger sibling in some way. A lot of the times with Cole, we see that little brother side of Alex come into fruition, whereas with Nathan, you witness him being an older brother and a caretaker, which I think he does really well, and you don’t see that as much with Jackie, which is unfortunate. There were some scenes in Season 1 that [saw] Alex behave more as a caretaker of Jackie, but some of them got cut, and you sort of just witnessed them being in love together. But I’d like to think that’s a true part of himself as well.

DEADLINE: In the last moments of the finale, Jackie and Cole have a moment, and then Alex hears what she says to Cole. Then there’s the whole George cliffhanger. What do you think that spells out for them in Season 3, and what’s going through his head in those final moments?

GENTRY: It’s so interesting. I mean, I know the answer to both of those. I think with regards to what’s going through his head, what’s funny is there was a portion of that scene that was longer, that was cut down, so you got to witness an initial reaction to that news, and that was taken out and left for a later date. I think what was going through his head was, “What the f*ck?” I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that. I don’t know how you slice it any other way. That’s probably what I would be thinking, and anybody else who lives on planet Earth would probably be thinking that.

What do I think it spells out for them? I mean, they clearly have a bigger problem, right? There’s an ambulance pulling up to their house. I think it spells out an issue of priority. It’s like, which thing are we going to deal with first? I could probably weigh in on what the more important thing is at the time, but who knows? I feel like audiences will agree that it feels like there’s a reckoning that needs to take place between these three. If they never talked about it, that’d be crazy. That would be an insane way to handle the show. Other than that, you’ll have to wait and see, but it’s really good.

DEADLINE: Production on Season 3 has begun. What can you tease about that and working on it?

GENTRY: Firstly, it feels so like home, and every time we come back, it feels like a week has gone by, and we’re just right back into it. The thought of having to walk away forever at some point is devastating. It’s interesting filming any season, because I tend to take on the feelings of the character maybe a little more than, I think sometimes. Like when I was doing Season 1 and 2 at the end, I remember feeling quite sad on top of everything ending and you wrap, and you don’t know if you’ll see each other again. It hurts for real. It’s real feelings that we’re using here. Real bodies, real people, real feelings.

All I can really say about Season 3 as of right now is that I really like it. I really like what they’re doing. I didn’t necessarily expect everything — and I never do — but I like it. We come back and we’re like, “Oh, wow, okay, glow up,” or whatever, but it’s so fun. I’m really pleased with everything, and I’m really excited to finish up. I mean, we’re not even close to being done. We have quite a bit more to do.

Fall Film Festival Season 2025 Begins – 10 Films I’m Excited to Watch

Off we go back into the lands of cinema and storytelling. Hoping to encounter some of the best films of the year. The fall film festival season is upon us once again, and we’re ready to start watching. Kicking things off with the 82nd Venice Film Festival which is now under this week in sunny Italy, along with the 52nd Telluride Film Festival in Colorado – two of the most beloved and iconic festivals in the world. Then the Toronto Film Festival will take over in mid-September celebrating 50 years (!!), before Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX (starting on Sept. 18) and the 63rd New York Film Festival in NYC (starting on Sept. 26), continuing with the London Film Festival (starting on Oct. 8) & Sitges Film Festival (also on Oct. 9). This is when all the big new movies and surprise projects they’ve been saving for the end of the year finally make their first appearance. Which of them will win us over? It’s an exciting time for cinephiles who make the voyages to these cities to discover the latest that the gods of cinema have provided. We’ve been covering these festivals all over the world for the last 19 years in a row – it’s part of who we are. Below is my list of my most anticipated from the line-ups across all of the festivals. I’ll be back in Venice to watch films at this annual cinema celebration in Italy – though this list includes many films from each of the various fall fests.

The challenge with film festivals nowadays is that it’s impossible to see everything at every festival, and it’s unaffordable to go to every festival all over the world (as much as I wish I could). Each of these fests has its own set of world premieres & special presentations – I decided to pick my own Top 10 Most Anticipated from among the entire set of films debuting this fall. Not just the ones at Venice or at TIFF or otherwise. Alas, I won’t be able to watch all of these listed as I won’t be able to attend the Toronto and New York Film Fests. But I still think these are some of the most interesting premieres. Choosing only 10 films is always a daunting task – I could name 50 films I want to see right now. However, this is always what’s so enticing and exhilarating about festivals, and why I always go back year after year. Let’s go watch and discover something new and discuss cinema! Let’s celebrate all of these achievements – and make sure writers and actors and the entire film crew are paid fairly & treated with respect. Anyway, enough of my rambling, onto the films…

As a huge fan of Park Chan-wook’s last film Decision to Leave (read my full review), I am excited to see him continue on in his tender era with this dark comedy about a man doing what he must. I’ve already read the synopsis and know what it’s about, which actually makes it even more exciting knowing that Park Chan-wook is handling this story about capitalism’s darker sides, right next to his colleague Bong Joon-ho, focusing on criticizing the financial woes of modern Korean society. Unless you prefer to watch this without any idea of what’s happening, don’t read on. Which is the best way to watch the film anyway – either way I’ve got a feeling this is going to be another knock out from Park Chan-wook. Lee Byung-hun stars as Man-soo, a father and family man who, after being unemployed for years, decides to start taking out the competition to hopefully give him a better chance at getting a job. Ha… Adapted from the book “The Ax” by Donald E. Westlake. There’s already an official trailer out if you want to see more footage from this one. Premiering in the Main Competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival – this one is a strong contender for the Golden Lion.

Jay Kelly – directed by Noah Baumbach – Venice & NYFF & London

Yet another beloved filmmaker who is a regular at the Venice Film Festival returning with his new movie. I also watched Noah Baumbach’s last two films, Marriage Story (2019) and White Noise (2022), in Venice in the years prior. He’s back with a personal story of a famous actor struggling with his own fame & glory as he gets older. Baumbach was lucky to get the one-and-only George Clooney as the titular Jay in his new film titled Jay Kelly (made for Netflix). It’s a very meta story – famous movie actor Jay Kelly and his devoted manager Ron embark on a whirlwind & profound journey across Europe to a (fictional) European film fest. Both are forced to confront choices they’ve made, their relationships with loved ones and the legacies they’ll leave behind. Baumbach’s cast also includes Adam Sandler as his manager, and Laura Dern as his publicist, along with his usually terrific ensemble: Patrick Wilson, Eve Hewson, Riley Keough, Billy Crudup, Isla Fisher, Greta Gerwig, and Emily Mortimer. While Baumbach has said the film is inspired by White Noise doing poorly, the script is co-written by fellow actor Emily Mortimer and feels very much like it’s meant for someone like Clooney to work through his own film industry woes and depression.

Silent Friend – directed by Ildikó Enyedi – Venice & TIFF

I love trees and nature and spending time in the forest and saying hello to trees. No really, it’s true, I adore trees (I love to photograph them all the time). Silent Friend is the new film from acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi, who won the Golden Bear top prize at Berlinale 2017 for her film On Body and Soul (it’s very good). The film is about a giant, old ginkgo tree located inside a garden in a medieval German town (yes this town and garden and tree really exist in Marburg, Germany). Spanning three periods in time – from 1908 to 1972 to 2020. 🌳 “In the heart of a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany stands a majestic ginkgo tree. This silent witness has observed over a century the quiet rhythms of transformation across three human lives.” The intro goes on explaining: ” We follow their clumsy, awkward attempts to connect — each one of them deeply rooted in their own present — as they are transformed by the quiet, enduring, and mysterious power of nature. The ancient ginkgo tree brings us closer to what it means to be human — to our longing to belong.” Yep I really cannot wait to watch this – it honestly sounds like it’ll be this year’s Perfect Days. The film stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Léa Seydoux, and also Luna Wedler.

Bugonia – directed by Yorgos Lanthimos – Venice

Yorgos is back! Let the Lanthimos Chaos reign! I was there in 2023 when Greek filmmaker extraordinaire Yorgos Lanthimos rocked everyone in Venice with Poor Things (here’s my full review) – which went on to win the Golden Lion and four Academy Awards. This time he’s going to surprise us all and take us another wild journey into madness. I’ve got a feeling the story and the way it all plays out in this film will be just as upsetting & divisive as Poor Things, though in a completely different way. Bugonia is a Lanthimos remake of the 2003 Korean sci-fi tilm titled Save the Green Planet, about a beekeeper who kidnaps a corporate exec because he believes he’s an alien controlling humans. Or something like that… This time around it’s Emma Stone starring as the corporate CEO + Jesse Plemons as the beekeeper guy who kidnaps her. Everything else, well, we’ll have to watch and find out where it goes and what happens and how wacky and weird and fun it gets. Or not! I’m so excited to watch this and argue about it with everyone at the festival and beyond…

Only need to say: Guillermo del Toro! The maestro is back! I was also in Venice in 2017 when The Shape of Water (here’s my full review) premiered at at all of the fall festivals, then went on to win the Golden Lion as well as Best Picture at the Oscars. Happy he’s back with his latest creation – an epic, stylish, grandiose new take on the classic tale of Frankenstein from the story by Mary Shelley. Though it is a Netflix movie, it still sounds like it’ll be a fascinating new version of this classic tale: “A brilliant but egotistical scientist brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.” Featuring Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as The Monster, with Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Ineson, Charles Dance, Christian Convery, and Burn Gorman. It was filmed with real sets, shot on location around the world, with lavish costumes and limited CGI. Even though everyone expects horror, apparently it’s more of a “deeply personal & intimate” character study than anything horrifying. I’m not even a big fan of the Frankenstein story, but I’m ready to watch this.

Rose of Nevada – directed by Mark Jenkin – Venice & TIFF & NYFF & London

What do we have here? A new project from clever Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin? I’m intrigued. Jenkin has been earning his marks on the film festival circuit with two other films before which cinephiles have been raving about: Bait and Enys Men. Rose of Nevada is his latest and it’s a mysterious new project. This time he was able to cast two major actors: George MacKay and Callum Turner star in the film as young men who try to join a fishing boat crew. In a forgotten fishing village, a boat mysteriously appears in the old harbour. The Rose of Nevada, lost at sea with all hands 30 years ago, reappears. After this lost ship returns to a village 30 years after vanishing, two men join its crew hoping for better fortune. After one voyage, they find themselves transported back in time, mistaken for the original crew. That’s the only intro that anyone should be reading before watching this – the rest will be a discovery when it’s playing on the screen in front of us. I’ve been following Jenkin’s work over the years and it seems like his most exciting creation yet. Keep an eye out for it playing at festivals this fall and hopefully in your local art house theater sooner than later…

After the Hunt – directed by Luca Guadagnino – Venice & NYFF

This one is going to be major. Early word is that After the Hunt is 2025’s Anatomy of a Fall – it’s the kind of “what do you believe?” movie that will have everyone talking and debating and arguing. The trailer hints at an upsetting incident with a young woman, played by Ayo Edebiri, at a prestigious university. She files an accusation against another professor then it becomes a controversy, etc. The rest of it is a mystery – we’ll have to wait to find out what really happened and why everyone is so defensive in here. From what I’ve heard, it’s possible Julia Roberts will end up winning the Academy Award next year for this movie. The main cast also features Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg (still beloved for his great performance in Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name), and Chloë Sevigny. Venice Fest regular Luca Guadagnino also specifically requested to not have the film premiere in the Main Competition, which I believe is because he’d rather everyone focus on what the movie is actually talking about and not whether it should win any awards.

Rental Family – directed by Hikari – TIFF & London

Rental Family was a surprise addition to the fall line-up of new releases (now set to open in theaters in November). While it won’t be premiering in Venice, it will show up at TIFF (and probably Telluride) instead. Brendan Fraser stars in the lead role in a story quite obviously inspired by Werner Herzog’s film Family Romance, LLC (which premiered at Cannes 2019) as a struggling American actor who moves to Tokyo and starts working for a “person rental” company. He is given various jobs to play various people – father, friend, etc. This seems like it’s the perfect post-Oscar role for Fraser – playing a man working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, “starring” in stand-in roles for strangers. He rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the beauty of human connection. The charming Japanse cast features Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Mahina Gorman, and Akira Emoto. It’s also the second feature film made by the filmmaker known as Hikari, aka Mitsuyo Miyazaki, her next big project after directing episodes of the hit TV series “Beef” for A24 & Netflix. This is definitely one to watch, even if it is a bit too cheesy & sentimental that’s fine with me.

Straight Circle – directed by Oscar Hudson – Venice

My wildcard pick for 2025 is this intriguing indie film creation – premiering in the Critics Week sidebar at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. Straight Circle is the first feature from British director Oscar Hudson, best known for directing many commercials & music videos. He’s finally making his leap into feature films and this one sounds like a fascinating psychological thriller similar to The Lighthouse or Foxtrot. Here’s the intro: “A pair of enemy soldiers stationed on a remote border in a vast featureless desert descend into a state of profound disorientation after forgetting which side of the border is which. As they grapple with identities, loyalties, and the absurdity of their situation, their isolation slowly gives way to an unfathomable nightmare that will blur the line between friend & foe.” The film stars Luke Tittensor & Elliot Tittensor – actual brothers in real life playing characters on opposite sides of the border. I am always interested in discovering new films that attempt to show how alike we are by revealing the truth about borders & nationality & wars: we’re all pretty much the same and we’re fighting over nothing aside from the hubris of greedy politicians.

A House of Dynamite – directed by Kathryn Bigelow – Venice & NYFF

As a reminder, filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, which went on to win Best Picture, initially premiered at the Venice Film Festival back in 2008. Her next movie is much more ominous: When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond. I thought this might take place entirely in the White House in underground rooms focused on a few people, but apparently it’s a full-on dramatic thriller following many different people involved in deciding what to do in this situation. The return of nuclear fear! Netflix hasn’t really revealed any marketing yet other than a basic poster with the tagline: “Not if. When.” The full cast includes Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Greta Lee, Jason Clarke. I’m especially intrigued to find out what happens in this fictional (or not?) story. Will they make the right call? Bigelow’s director’s statement also explains: ” I wanted to make a film that confronts this paradox — to explore the madness of a world that lives under the constant shadow of annihilation, yet rarely speaks of it.”

Aside from these 10 films listed above, there are also a handful of films that I want to watch but fall into the category of “I just really hope they’re good.” I’m not as excited about them as I should be right now, I just want them to be very good films. These include: Werner Herzog’s new doc Ghost Elephants about African elephants; Chloe Zhao’s new film Hamnet starring Jessie Buckley as Agnes Shakespeare & Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare; Derek Cianfrance’s crime comedy Roofman with Channing Tatum; Mona Fastvold’s follow-up to The Brutalist, which she also co-wrote with Brady Corbet, a new film titled The Testament of Ann Lee starring Amanda Seyfried as as Ann Lee – the founding leader of the Shakers religious sect in the 18th century; the next Daniel Day-Lewis project titled Anemone (which looks quite good); and of course Rian Johnson’s latest whodunit with Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery – which is premiering at TIFF. There are plenty of other discoveries and surprises that I am sure we’ll encounter over the next few months as they premiere at upcoming film festivals around the world.

A few others that are also on my watchlist: Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers (TIFF), Claire Denis’ The Fence (TIFF & NYFF), Ulrich Köhler’s Gavagai (NYFF), Kent Jones’ Late Fame (Venice & NYFF), Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice (TIFF), Olivier Assayas’ The Wizard of the Kremlin (Venice & TIFF), Bryan Fuller’s Dust Bunny (TIFF), Kenji Tanigaki’s The Furious (TIFF), and Ben Wheatley’s Normal (TIFF) with Odenkirk. Yes! Netflix confirmed earlier this month that My Life with the Walter Boys would return for a third season.

It has certainly built up the anticipation further for season 2, with the renewal news coming before the second instalment was even released on Netflix.

Is there a potential release date for My Life with the Walter Boys season 3?

Not exactly. While Netflix hasn’t announced the exact release date for My Life with the Walter Boys, the streamer has confirmed the third season will premiere in 2026.

Well, that completely depends on what happens in season 2!

“I love the teenage stories and what we do with those characters,” show creator Melanie Halsall told Tudum when asked of season 3. “But I think we have a lot of potential to tell stories that are intergenerational. I’d love to be able to do more of that in season 3.”

No. With filming underway for season 3, it will be a while yet before a trailer is released.

John Malkovich Joins ‘Bad Monkey’ Season 2

John Malkovich has joined Bad Monkey season two.

The Apple TV+ series has cast Malkovich in a series regular role for the upcoming season, which Vince Vaughn stars in and executive produces. It will be based on a new, original story.

Created by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso, Shrinking), Bad Monkey is based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name. “Season one tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), who has been bounced from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys. But after stumbling upon a case that begins with a human arm fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he’ll be back in. He just needs to get past a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey,” reads the synopsis.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps actor will play Spencer, the leader of a big criminal organization in South Florida. Bad Monkey‘s season one cast also included L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet and Jodie Turner-Smith.

Last year, Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter about his hopes for the show’s future. “When I pitched it [to Apple], I had a beginning, middle and end of a three-season arc for this character, and for who he would be and where he would get to — and they were really receptive to it. It’s challenging right now to make shows, and especially to pick up your life and go make it. [Vaughn and I] both moved to Florida! It was insane,” Lawrence said. “I think what’s cool, if we were able to do it, is that you have these season-long stories [where] you get caught up in characters’ lives. You see redemption stories, descents into the dark side for other characters, and that story gets told.” 

In addition to Vaughn, Lawrence and his Doozer Productions, Jeff Ingold, Matt Tarses, Liza Katzer and Adam Sztykiel also serve as executive producers.

A release date for season two has not yet been announced.

Stacey & Joe season 2 air date confirmed as popular TV couple return

Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash will once again be inviting cameras into the chaos of Pickle Cottage in Stacey & Joe season 2 – and now the launch date has been confirmed.

The series, which provides a fly-on-the-wall perspective on the family life of singer and television presenter Solomon and her husband – former EastEnders star Joe Swash – at their Essex home, will return to BBC One and iPlayer on Tuesday 9th September at 8pm.

Season 2 will pick up “right where cameras left off” and give fans a glimpse at “some very special and monumental firsts for the family”, including Belle’s first day at nursery, all of the little ones learning to ski, a Valentine’s gift that leaves Stacey in a fit of giggles, and Zach beginning driving lessons with grandad Dave.

The official synopsis continues: “Audiences will get to see what really goes into making it work when you’re bringing up a blended family of teenagers and toddlers, as Stacey and Joe continue to navigate and manage their busy schedules and work lives, including passion projects and navigating changing family dynamics.”

The couple said in a statement: “We’ve been so grateful for all the lovely messages and people watching series 1. Everyone’s support means the world to us and we can’t wait to take everyone on this crazy journey we call life! We hope people will laugh along with us again in this new series.”

Clare Sillery, BBC Documentaries’ head of commissioning, added: “It’s so good to be working with Stacey and Joe and their family again. Audiences loved the first series, episode 1 reached an audience of 4.2 million on BBC One, that’s a lot of eyes on Pickle Cottage.

“It’s been great to see how viewers have taken Stacey, Joe, their kids and beloved pets to their hearts and series 2 will continue to reflect their bustling lives at Pickle Cottage.”

Charlotte Brookes, head of popular factual at Optomen, said: “We’re so grateful to Joe and Stacey and their family for letting the cameras in once again to document the highs and lows of their lives. There’s never a dull moment at Pickle Cottage.”

CW, Pac-12 Extend Rights Deal Through 2030-31 Season

Nexstar’s CW Network and the Pac-12 Conference are continuing their team-up –even if some of the teams associated with the group are no longer present

The broadcast network and the collegiate-sports league have extended their current rights deal through the 2030-31 season. Under terms of the pact, the CW will televise 13 regular-season football games next year, during the 2026-27 season, along with regular-season telecasts of 35 men’s basketball games and 15 women’s basketball games. CW will also get to telecast the semifinal and championship games for the new Pac-12 women’s basketball tournament. Pac-12 Enterprises, the broadcast production arm of the conference, will produce all football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games, totaling 66 events annually.

The original Pac-12 fell apart last year when USC and UCLA, and then others, exited for other groups. Those maneuvers left Oregon State and Washington State as the group’s only members. The new grouping, which launches in 2026, will also feature Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State. Gonzaga will join for sports not tied to football and Texas State will serve as an joins as the eighth football member. Pac-12 has already struck a deal with CBS Sports to show some of its games.

“The Pac-12 has been a key partner in the success of CW Sports, and we are thrilled to solidify our relationship with the conference for an additional five years,” said Brad Schwartz, president of The CW Network, in a statement. “We have experienced firsthand the passion of the Oregon State and Washington State football programs and their dedicated fans and we are eager to introduce an additional seven schools in the new Pac-12 to our nationwide CW Sports audience. We are also excited to bring Pac-12 men’s and women’s basketball to our viewers featuring some of the most dynamic and celebrated collegiate programs in the country.”

Pac-12 has been on CW since the 2024 football season, and will be telecast by the network in 2025. The CW’s most-watched college football game of the year was the matchup between Washington State and Oregon State in Corvallis.

“The Pac-12’s partnership with The CW has been one of mutual growth and transformation, from the development of our Pac-12 Enterprises’ broadcast production business to the significant added value and positive impact to our current and future members via true national reach across 100% of U.S. television households,” said Teresa Gould, the Pac-12 commissioner, in a statement.

The new season begins with new challenges for everyone. ‘Archie’ Ahsaas Channa and ‘Niraj’ Gyanendra Tripathi are set to face their exams-article and final CA exams soon, respectively. However, have we ever heard life is that simple? There are certainly some things to sort be it in relationships or exam stress.

Archie and Tejas (Prit Kamani) have a secret love blooming which is not known to Vishal (Anmol Kajani) and Parth (Rohan Joshi). Archie is still stressed with her exams and managing her articleship. Both she and Parth struggled to find a good firm for their article.

Meanwhile, Niraj meets his past lover, Kavya in the same academy where he is preparing. Their past has a lot to process and thinhs they have to let go off. Archie doesn’t tell her office colleagues that Tejas is a BCOM student due to judgements.

So, what will happen with Archie and Niraj? Will Niraj clear his CA final papers? Will Archie be able to manage to complete her articleship and pass her exams? Will both their relationships pass amid all the academic stress?

Star Performances

As always, Channa delivers an impeccable act as a student, which is not something new, yet the arc of her character makes her look fresh. Tripathi engrosses you in his difficult and sad journey. You wish to never be in his place and, at the same time, root for him to win this battle.

Anmol Kajani and Rohan Joshi support the pivotal cast and especially Channa’s character well, while Prit Kamani appears for a very short time on the screen but keeps breaking the monotony of the show whenever he does.

Conclusion
