Meghan Markle returning to the big screen after 8-year hiatus – National

Meghan Markle is returning to the big screen with a role in the upcoming film Close Personal Friends.

Markle, who starred in Suits for seven seasons, will have a small cameo role in the movie as herself, according to Variety.

Close Personal Friends, a comedy starring Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, Brie Larson and Henry Golding, is currently filming around Los Angeles. Other cast members include Natasia Demetriou, Patti Harrison and Dustin Demri-Burn.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, was photographed on the set of the film in Pasadena, Calif., wearing sunglasses as she got into the backseat of a Range Rover.

The film centres on a couple “that meets and befriends a celebrity couple while on a trip to Santa Barbara. Personal lines get crossed, among other things, and awkward hilarity ensues,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Before marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Markle starred in the legal drama series Suits, playing Rachel Zane from 2011 until 2018. Her other film roles include Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me and Horrible Bosses.

Prince Harry and Markle recently extended the partnership with Netflix and Archewell Productions with a multiyear, first-look deal in August.

“My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonate globally, and celebrates our shared vision,” Markle said in a statement.

Archewell Productions began collaborating with Netflix in 2020, producing a handful of documentary content, including the popular series, Harry & Meghan. The Duchess of Sussex also developed a lifestyle brand, As Ever, in partnership with Netflix.

The collaboration has also produced the documentary series Polo, Heart of Invictus and Live to Lead.

The couple and the streaming service also announced upcoming collaborations, including a second season of With Love, Meghan, a lifestyle and cooking show starring Markle. The show will also receive a special holiday episode in December.

Archewell Productions is also set to work with Netflix on a feature adaptation of Carley Fortune’s novel, Meet Me at the Lake, which “follows a decade-spanning love story that begins with a chance encounter and a broken promise.”

Fortune, a popular Canadian writer, previously said the book’s love story is “dear to my heart,” adding that she can’t imagine “a more perfect partnership.”

She also said writing the book was “a tremendous personal challenge,” and to see it recognized in this way is truly incredible.

Noida psychologist shares how constant screen time is causing ‘Popcorn Brain Syndrome’ in teenagers and young adults

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

With screen time at an all-time high, many youngsters are constantly switching between apps, videos, and games. This digital overload is affecting focus, memory, and mental health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Jaya Sukul, Clinical Psychologist and Founder of Headspace Healing, Noida, sheds light on the emerging “popcorn brain” syndrome and how it impacts young minds. (Also read: Psychiatrist shares how late-night scrolling, anxiety and stress are fueling a sleep crisis among Gen Z )

Dr Jaya Sukul explains ‘Popcorn Brain Syndrome’ and how to reclaim focus in a screen-filled world. (Freepik)

What is Popcorn Brain?

“Popcorn Brain isn’t your brain literally popping,” says Dr Sukul. “It’s the sensation of your neural circuits being overstimulated by constant digital inputs. You may find yourself jumping quickly from one thing to the next, struggling to focus, and feeling restless offline because life seems slower than your online feed.”

She explains that modern lifestyles, social media, and continuous digital exposure have reshaped brain activity. “Your brain craves novelty, and devices exploit this craving, keeping you in a state of hyper-alertness. Over time, this can drain your energy, increase stress, reduce focus, and even affect sleep,” Dr Sukul adds.

Who is affected?

While Popcorn Brain is most commonly seen in teenagers and young adults, Dr Sukul warns it is also affecting people aged 30-45. “It’s not the same as internet addiction,” she clarifies. “Internet addiction is a clinical syndrome that disrupts work, relationships, and daily life. Popcorn Brain affects your quality of life, attention, and emotional well-being, but it doesn’t necessarily ruin relationships or career performance.”

Symptoms to watch for include:

  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Difficulty focusing or paying attention
  • Feeling hyper-vigilant or stressed
  • Life offline feels dull or uninteresting
To address 'popcorn brain', Dr Sukul advises creating screen-free zones, taking breaks from devices, practising mindfulness, and consuming media intentionally.(Google Gemini)

How to ease Popcorn Brain

Dr Sukul suggests several strategies to reclaim focus and peace of mind:

1. Create screen-free zones: Designate areas in your home where phones and devices aren’t allowed.

2. Schedule device breaks: Take intentional breaks from screens to reset your brain.

3. Practice mindfulness: Meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises can help improve focus and calm overstimulation.

4. Work in focused bursts: Short periods of concentration followed by breaks enhance productivity.

5. Be intentional with media consumption: Ask yourself, “Who is in control, me or my phone?”

6. Avoid mindless scrolling: Passive browsing actively overstimulates your brain and reinforces Popcorn Brain symptoms.

“By consciously managing digital consumption and including mindfulness practices, you can reclaim your attention, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being,” Dr Sukul concludes.

Guernsey To Launch Institute of Screen Arts

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: The island of Guernsey will launch the Institute of Screen Arts Guernsey (ISAG), a newly established charity and industry body focused on expanding the island’s screen sector, in 2026.

The institute will be led by Guernsey-based professionals: Actor Cameron Ashplant (Marooned Awakening, The Last Bus), Director Brandon Ashplant (Whispers of Freedom, Bet Your Bottom Dollar), Executive Producers Stephen Ainsworth and Stephen Collas (Underground, Dare To Dream), and Production Manager Jonathan Allaway (How to Rob a Bank, The Balkans).

The ISAG has been developed in consultation with the Guernsey Government’s Committee for Economic Development. The Institute will focus on advocating for the island’s screen sector on the international stage, offering production support, location coordination, and financial assistance. The Institute’s first location and talent catalog will debut with the 2026 launch and will be designed to aid casting directors and scouts.

Guernsey has a rich artistic history. Films shot on the island include François Truffaut’s Oscar-nominated The Story of Adele H (1975), while Victor Hugo penned his seminal drama Les Misérables on the island while in exile. Despite its rich history, Guernsey remains outside the BFI’s remit. The island is a self-governing state with its own legislature, judiciary, and fiscal system. This constitutional autonomy means the island can offer filmmakers its own fiscal incentives, streamlined permits, and direct access to logistical support.

Actor Murray McArthur (The Northman, How to Train Your Dragon) will serve as the Institute’s first Honorary Patron.

Screen Talk with Daniel Battsek at NYFF

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this week at the New York Film Festival, IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast hosted Film at Lincoln Center president Daniel Battsek to talk about our favorite films at the festival and the state of the industry today. Battsek joined Film at Lincoln Center in May after a history as a producer and acquisitions executive. His past credits include Palace Pictures, Miramax, Cohen Media Group, National Geographic Films, and, most recently, as chairman of Film4 in the U.K.

While the live conversation of course gave us the chance to catch up on NYFF, we also just had to ask about Battsek’s former days working alongside the likes of Charles Cohen and Harvey Weinstein. That included acquiring both the Coens’ “No Country for Old Men” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” for Miramax — and they were scripts he received over the same weekend, and greenlit by Monday.

Battsek also walks through how the festival chased and landed certain titles — including world premieres like “Gavagai,” “Anemone,” and “Is This Thing On?”

We also polled him for his thoughts as a producer and festival director on the compressed landscape for festival acquisitions overall — increasingly out of festivals, films are sitting in limbo awaiting distribution, especially documentaries. As far as the financing and distribution landscape for indies, is there reason for hope? For despair?

Buzz: Tabu to Share Screen With Nagarjuna Akkineni for His 100th Film?

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Nagarjuna Akkineni’s 100th film is the hottest topic in the tinsel town. When everyone was waiting for a grand announcement to be made, the project went on floors silently, much to the fans’ surprise. And now, there’s another interesting buzz that’s doing the rounds about the most-anticipated project. According to industry sources, actress Tabu is on board for the milestone film.

Directed by Ra Karthik, Nagarjuna’s 100th film has already commenced shooting in Hyderabad. But the leading lady has always been a constant source of speculation. Although none of the names popped up, the filmmakers have been constantly on the lookout. Apparently, it was the director who suggested Tabu’s name. When he pitched it to Nag, the actor too endorsed it. Tabu is generally very selective in choosing her characters and takes up only if she finds it to be substantial. Since, the leading lady in Nagarjuna’s 100th film isn’t a quintessential running around the trees, but a meaty role, the director wanted to bring Tabu on board. And for now, rumour mongers had it saying that Tabu has joined the film’s cast. Interestingly, the project would be Tabu’s second film as she had recently signed Vijay Sethupathi’s film under director Puri Jagannadh.

Nagarjuna Akkineni

Nagarjuna and Tabu magic

Nagarjuna and Tabu have been paired in films like Ninne Pelladutha (1996) and Aavida Maa Aavide (1998). While the former was a blockbuster and an industry hit, the latter was an average fare. But what’s common between the two films was Nag and Tabu’s sizzling onscreen chemistry which the audiences appreciated. And Ra Karthik wanted to recreate their magic for Nag’s milestone film. And contrary to their earlier films, Tabu won’t play Nag’s love interest in the film, but she’ll be seen in a significant role. And Nagarjuna, apart from headlining the film, is also producing the film.

John Gore Studios Buys Hilary Bevan Jones’ Hilltop Screen

by jummy84 October 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Hilary Bevan Jones’ recently launched Hilltop Screen has landed investment from Broadway producer John Gore’s TV and film venture, and drafted in Francis Hopkinson for a new central role.

John Gore Studios has bought a majority stake in Hilltop Screen, which former Endor chief and UK drama industry veteran Bevan Jones co-founded with Medwyn Jones, a British media lawyer. Financial terms were not disclosed.

At the same time, John Gore Studio has appointed former ITV Studios and Lookout Point exec Hopkinson as Creative Director.

Hilltop Screen joins John Gore Studios with several TV projects currently in development with major broadcasters and global streaming platforms, and feature films, including one soon to be announced.

Bevan Jones, one of the most well-known faces in British drama TV production, has credits ranging from Richard Curtis’ The Girl in the Café to Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot and from Cracker to The Boat That Rocked.  She was the first female BAFTA chair and supports emerging filmmakers through her global charity, Watersprite Film Festival, which she has chaired since 2009.

She launched her new venture after the Seven. One Studios-backed Endor closed last year in the face of the tough production environment in the UK. Bevan Jones had broadly stepped back from the business she launched in 1998, but remained a key player as a hands-on producer.

Hopkinson has been running his own script consultancy for several years, Expanded Media, and is known as one of the most experienced drama makers in the UK, having worked on the likes of The Bitter End and Wallander. He will complete work he has with Starz on 50 Cent-backed crime drama Fightland as he moves into his new post.

Hopkinson will oversee a slate of TV and film proejcts, and report to John Gore Studios CEO Hilary Strong.

As Deadline revealed in July, John Gore Studios launched with headquarters in London and offices in New York, and with a slate including Joan Collins-starring Wallis Simpson biopic The Bitter End (working title). Several high profile execs joined Strong on launch.

That news came over a year after Gore, a 25-time Tony Award winner, acquired iconic British Dracula outfit Hammer Films and several weeks after it bought Kaleidoscope parent KFilm. Gore is known theater productions such as Oklahoma!, Dear Evan Hansen and Hello, Dolly!.

Gore, who is Executive Chairman of John Gore Studios, called Bevan Jones “one of the most respected producers of British drama” and Hopkinson “an exceptional producer whose track record of delivering acclaimed, ambitious drama makes him the perfect creative leader.”

Strong added: “We are proud to be assembling a diverse and dynamic ecosystem of talent, IP and production expertise. By building an end-to-end studio of rights, production and distribution, we are accelerating our mission to deliver compelling, globally resonant stories rooted in both legacy and innovation.”

Bevan Jones, who is Managing Director of Hilltop Screen, said: “I formed Hilltop Screen as a small multi-generational company because I’m keen to continue making high quality, world class TV and film that will last a lifetime. I’m thrilled that John Gore Studios recognises and shares this vision and has chosen to enable it.

Hopkinson noted that Gore had directed him in a university play four 40 years ago, as he gears up for his new post. “The company has an incredibly exciting slate ahead, bringing together the very best of British creative talent—both on and off screen—and showcasing it on the international stage,” he added.

More announcements around commissions and slate developments from both Hilltop Screen and John Gore Studios can be expected this year.

NYFF Debuts ‘Anemone,’ ‘After the Hunt’ — Screen Talk

by jummy84 October 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The New York Film Festival is wrapping up its first week, which began last Friday with the North American premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s controversial academic thriller “After the Hunt.” The other world premiere that sparked debate was Ronan Day-Lewis’ “Anemone,” which brings his father, Daniel Day-Lewis, out of acting retirement for his first onscreen role since 2017’s “Phantom Thread.”

And speaking of Paul Thomas Anderson, “One Battle After Another” debuted to $22 million domestic in its first weekend at the box office. On this week’s episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio preview second-weekend chances for the action thriller, which is screening in a variety of formats from 70mm IMAX to VistaVision around the country. It’s also a major Oscar player, positioning Anderson to potentially win his first Oscar after years of also-ran nominations on films from “Magnolia” to “There Will Be Blood” and “Phantom Thread.” Anne hears good word-of-mouth from Academy voters, who are turning up for “One Battle After Another” with an enthusiastic response.

'The French Italian'

With Anne now joining Ryan in New York, we discuss receptions to films including “After the Hunt” (which was mixed out of NYFF opening night but has a chance with Golden Globes voters) and “Anemone.” While Ryan liked Ronan Day-Lewis’ dark, surreal two-hander about estranged British brothers (Sean Bean stars opposite Daniel Day-Lewis) with a few secrets dating back to the Troubles of Northern Ireland, Anne had quibbles about some of the film’s artistic choices that we both share in.

Meanwhile, the talk of the town this week was an AI “actor” named Tilly Norwood, a very much not real person created by artificial intelligence talent studio Xicoia. SAG-AFTRA released a statement decrying the AI performer, for whom the studio has been sharing headshots, selfies, and motion graphics via social media. Will the statement make an impact? As Anne explains, the stable has opened, the horses are galloping out of it, and the AI revolution is here. We can’t stop what’s coming.

As a reminder, Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio will host a “Screen Talk” Live at the New York Film Festival on Monday, October 6 at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center at 4 p.m. at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Attendance is free, and our special guest is Daniel Battsek, the new president of Film at Lincoln Center, who will join us for a lively discussion with audience questions.

What to See at New York Film Festival — Screen Talk

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

The New York Film Festival enters its 2025 edition this Friday, and IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast clues you in on a few under-the-radar titles to see.

Co-host Ryan Lattanzio is a big fan of Bi Gan’s “Resurrection,” which stars Shu Qi as a woman who invades the dreams of the last person capable of having them. The Chinese director’s latest film is a Lynchian odyssey with a oner for the ages, in which a vampire rave is descended upon by a raincoat-clad mafia. Anne Thompson, meanwhile, advocates for Oscar-nominated “Mirai” director Mamoru Hosoda’s animated feature “Scarlet,” which Sony Pictures Classics will push for Academy Awards.

Jeremy Strong Mark Zuckerberg

Also, make sure you see Harry Lighton’s “Pillion,” a gay sub-dom romance between Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, which A24 will release early next year. Ryan says it’s like Richard Curtis directing “The Piano Teacher,” and if that’s not enough to sell you, well, we can’t help you there.

Heads up, “Screen Talk” will also host a live edition with Anne and Ryan in person at the New York Film Festival on Monday, October 6. We’ll be joined by guest Daniel Battsek, who is now president of Film at Lincoln Center. Attendance is free and open to all at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center that afternoon at 4 p.m.

Elsewhere on this week’s episode, we also take a look at the box office prospects for Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful “One Battle After Another,” which is projected to gross in the $20 million range. Low for a movie of this scale (and budget!) but typical of Anderson’s boundary-pushing work. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a retired and drugged-out revolutionary and with breakout performances from Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti — not to mention Sean Penn, who we love now? — this is a movie that has legs and will play well into the fall.

We also dive into the latest brouhaha surrounding Jimmy Kimmel, whose late-night show was pulled from the airwaves after he made comments about Charlie Kirk. He’s back on the air, and with a ratings surge to boot, but can it be sustained? And will his tearful monologue, filled with appreciation for those who backed him, be enough for audiences less keen on him already?

Listen to the podcast in the episode below.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ brings revolution to the (very) big screen

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

LOS ANGELES — Paul Thomas Anderson spent about 20 years writing “One Battle After Another.” After two decades, it’s never felt more relevant.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ brings revolution to the (very) big screen

The epic action thriller, inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s “Vineland,” hits theaters Friday. With a running time of 2 hours and 50 minutes, “One Battle After Another” wastes no time immersing audiences in its politically charged world.

The revolution will not be televised, but it will be placed at the front and center of Anderson’s film. The director isn’t there to make his audience comfortable, star Teyana Taylor says, as he zeros in on themes of immigration, racism and systemic corruption showcased at their most absurd.

“I feel like PTA calls out a lot of things that are trying to get swept under the rug,” Taylor told The Associated Press, referring to the director by his nickname. “And that’s what I respect. This is really waking, shaking and baking some s -. Like, you gotta shake the table.”

Taylor’s character, Perfidia Beverly Hills, is a member of the Weather Underground-inspired French 75 revolutionary group. From the film’s first scene, we see the French 75 take matters into their own hands, liberating undocumented detainees, destroying corrupt political offices and launching their own form of justice, one right after the other. The group is peppered with members portrayed by musicians-turned-actors like Dijon Duenas, Alana Haim, and Shayna McHayle and notable actors like Regina Hall and Wood Harris.

“I mean, this movie is based on some of the revolutionaries and anarchists of the late ’60s, the Weathermen that were fighting for civil rights, environmentalism too at the time, capitalism, Vietnam,” star Leonardo DiCaprio told the . “But it’s about the implosion of that too, about the extremes that people go to for their own ideology.”

DiCaprio portrays Bob Ferguson, known in the French 75’s initial scenes as Ghetto Pat, known for his knowledge of explosives and undying devotion to both Perfidia and the revolution. Together, Perfidia and Pat seem unstoppable, until the racist and xenophobic Col. Steven Lockjaw sets out end the group to fuel his rise to power.

“And this is a movie, fast-forward, in today’s day and age, where you see this sort of systematic breakdown that comes from it, if it’s not done with grace and purity and consistently, the whole sort of— our revolution is dismantled and our past comes back to haunt us,” said DiCaprio. “So that’s what I love that Paul did. He shows extremity on both sides of the spectrum and how no one seems to be communicating or getting things done in the right way nowadays.”

The film jumps 16 years into the future. Perfidia has disappeared and DiCaprio’s character lives under a new alias in a sanctuary city as a paranoid, stoner dad with his teenage daughter, Willa . Everything is seemingly mundane until Lockjaw reappears, forcing the father-daughter duo on the run.

“There’s a lot of moments where I was like, I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to do this, but thankfully I had amazing scene partners and a great support system to kind of assure me that I was here to do my job and I knew exactly that I could do it,” Infiniti said.

“One Battle After Another” is Anderson’s most expensive project to date and shot entirely in VistaVision — a decades-old format that’s been revived in recent years by movies like “The Brutalist.”

Benicio del Toro, who plays karate instructor Sensei Sergio St. Carlos, says blending improv scenes with DiCaprio and shooting in the antique format forced the actors and Anderson to have unwavering faith in each other’s decisions, knowing they only had a limited amount of takes. His character, also the head of an undocumented migrant hideaway, hopes his storyline will be an example of showcasing compassion beyond political affiliation.

“I wouldn’t be pompous enough to say movies change people. But it might just open a door that leads to another door that leads to a hallway to another door,” he said.

DiCaprio says portraying Bob Ferguson is his own version of freedom of speech, allowing him to “shine a light on certain issues about humanity and different subject matters.”

“I’m always searching for a movie that doesn’t necessarily have meaning but is thought-provoking, that holds a mirror up to who we are as a society, as people, of humanity,” said DiCaprio. “And that’s what I think the heart of this movie is, is how to find humanity in a world that is incredibly divided. … It’s not a film where there’s a specific sort of ideology that Paul is putting into it. It’s saying this is who we are, this is the world we live in.”

For Taylor, the 20-year-old script’s relevance is evidence of American history continuing to repeat itself.

“It didn’t need a change; it didn’t need to be updated because it was all still so relevant,” said Taylor. “It’s time to wake up, and it’s time to shed light on the necessary conversations.”
