Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson Sci-Fi Satire

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Toronto Film Festival. Republic Pictures releases “Shell” in select theaters Friday, October 3.

Some movies suffer because of bad timing. “Shell” wouldn’t be a very good movie under any circumstances, but it fares especially poorly against Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” a better and more outrageous film that deals in very similar subject matter. “Outrageous” is what director Max Minghella is going for here. And when it accepts its destiny as a ‘50s-style rubber-suit sci-fi monster movie, “Shell” does have camp value to it. Even then, it still doesn’t commit to the bit hard enough to make it successful.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story stars Charlie Hunnam as the actor playing Ed Gein, shown here smiling in the dark with his hand above his face

There are some funny moments in “Shell” — both intentional and unintentional — and some eye-catching images. The first living creature to appear on screen is a fluffy lap dog smeared with blood, which combines the two; it trots down a dark hallway in an ‘80s-style mansion, its little legs moving as fast as they can. The camera follows the dog into a retro tiled bathroom, where Elizabeth Berkley is sitting in a shell-pink bathtub wearing a matching silk robe cutting grotesque black bumps off of her leg. She’s freaking out. The tub is slippery with blood. She passes out and drops the knife, and the dog starts licking it clean.

It’s a promising cold open, one that leads into an uneasy blend of attempted pathos and tired entertainment-industry satire as Samantha (Elisabeth Moss) goes out for what she thinks is a meeting with the director of one of the downbeat indie movies Moss sometimes stars in in real life. It turns out to be an open audition, and Samantha loses the role — a divorced single mother of two — to “it” girl Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber). Chloe is barely old enough to drink, let alone have two kids, but she’s hot and popular on social media so there you go. The experience leads Samantha’s reps (one of whom is played by Ziwe, perfectly cast) to suggest, their voices thick with smarmy faux-concern, that she go rest at the Shell clinic for a while.

CEO Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson) is the face of Shell, a company whose services blend elements of “Death Becomes Her” and “The Lobster.” In a spa-like atmosphere, people like Samantha can stave off their fear of irrelevance by undergoing an outpatient procedure where their DNA is fused with the DNA of a lobster, or something, resulting in a younger, stronger, taller version of themselves with clear skin and bright eyes. A lot is explained, but none of it sticks. The only things that land are the cutting jokes, which, again, are nothing new — did you know Los Angeles is a shallow and insincere place? — but get some chuckles in the moment.

The satire here is clumsy, gesturing at similar points already made in better movies. There’s a rule in comedy that if you have to explain a joke, it’s not a very good joke, and a similar sort of ambiguity is at play here. It’s not always clear if, say, a montage set to “Walkin’ on Sunshine” after her Shell treatment improves Samantha’s life is a tongue-in-cheek parody of cheesy ‘80s movies, or if it’s just plain cheesy itself. This all ties into the camp factor, which could also be used to explain away hacky details like Samantha’s cat as a stand-in for her spinsterhood. Hypothetically.

“Shell” also fancies itself body horror, but again it doesn’t commit hard enough to truly excel in that area. Samantha barfs up some black bile, and Zoe’s sycophants eat her skin at a dinner party in a bit that briefly frames her as a Christ figure but doesn’t go anywhere. Then there are the bumps that pop up when the procedure “goes wrong,” which are referred to in the film as “scales” but are more like the kind of lumpy mole that would prompt a visit to the dermatologist. A whole rash of them is pretty gross, but not as gross as it needs to be. Where’s the goop?

Mysterious pink liquids are injected into willing subjects from unlabeled vials at the Shell clinic, again shades of “The Substance.” Even the surface aesthetics of the films are similar: Both have an eye for ‘80s-inspired fashions and architecture, which manifests here in the form of silver lamé and curved lines. The heightened reality of this film is not as well constructed, however, and with much less intentionality: The self-driving cars that appear in the background throughout the film, for example, serve no particular purpose except to shore up its sci-fi credentials.

Everyone in “Shell” lives in this reality except for schlumpy everywoman Moss, who feels like she’s about a half-step off from everyone else. That’s not a failure on the part of the actor, who has proven herself more than capable many times over. It is indicative of the overall clumsiness of the project, whose lack of consistency is present even in little details like that fact that some of the magazines in the film are real (Samantha is profiled in “Vanity Fair”) and others are not (ditto for Zoe in “Persons”).

Hudson, meanwhile, does understand the tone Minghella is aiming for here, or is perhaps setting it herself. Her motivations for striking up a friendship with Samantha are inscrutable and predatory, and she plays the chilly villainess with relish as she struts around in fabulous gowns and purrs out pseudo-scientific bullshit. (There’s also the potential for a lesbian subtext to her relationship with Moss, but this is sadly underdeveloped.) Her perfection is supposed to make her hateable, and Moss’ imperfection is similarly meant to frame her as relatable. But pulling off that dynamic in a movie that also has human-sized crustaceans in it is a project for a more skilled filmmaker than this one.

Grade: C

“Shell” premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Republic Pictures releases the film Friday, October 3, 2025.

New Trailer for Thai Sci-Fi ‘Project Genesis’ Time Travel Adventure Film

“Reset the timeline by sending out a signal…” Capelight Pictures has debuted the full trailer for a Thai sci-fi movie called Project Genesis, also known as Taklee Genesis, made by filmmaker Chookiat Sakveerakul. After first debuting last year (first teaser here), this is finally getting a US release direct-to-VOD / Blu-ray starting in October – in time for spooky season. A time-travel adventure that takes place during the Cold War when a US military base in Thailand was testing the Taklee Genesis, a warp-speed teleporter even though it had not yet been fully developed. After the war, the Taklee Genesis was left behind in Thailand and was being illegally used by someone. A striking blend of practical effects, CGI spectacle, and emotional storytelling, Project Genesis cements Sakveerakul’s reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s most imaginative genre filmmakers. There’s dinosaurs, monsters, time travel, and much more in this! Starring Paula Taylor, Peter Corp Dyrendal, Wanarat Ratsameerat, and Nutthacha Jessica Padovan. It’s a breathtaking, high-concept journey that fuses time-travel science fiction with kaiju, dinosaurs, cavemen, and zombies—a bold cinematic mashup that spans over 7,000 years of history. This looks totally crazy! Reminds me of that other Thai CGI movie Rebirth: Home Sweet Home recently. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re a sci-fi geek.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Chookiat Sakveerakul’s film Project Genesis, direct from YouTube:

Project Genesis Poster

Scientist and single mother Stella (Paula Taylor) returns to her hometown after years away. One night, she receives a mysterious transmission on an old radio—it’s her long-lost father, missing for decades and now trapped in space within an alternate time configuration. To rescue him, Stella must track down the “Genesis Machine“, a relic of a classified CIA project hidden somewhere in Thailand. Her quest launches her into a kaleidoscopic journey through time and space—one that will pit her against prehistoric beasts, ancient tribes, mutant creatures, and the boundaries of reality itself. Project Genesis, also known as Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide, is directed by Thai filmmaker Chookiat Sakveerakul, director of the films Evil, The 4 Movie, Grean Fictions, The Eyes Diary, Pay It Forward, Dew, Mondo, and many other new TV series recently. The screenplay is written by Chookiat Sakveerakul, Thanamas Dhalerngsuk, Sorawit Muangkaew. Produced by Monaiya Tharasak, Nakorn Phopairoj, and Kaweenipon Ketprasit. This initially premiered in Thailand one year ago in late 2024. Capelight Pictures will release Sakveerakul’s Project Genesis in the US direct-to-VOD / Blu-ray starting on October 21st, 2025 coming soon this fall. Anyone want to watch this?

“What if something followed me back?” “Find out what the ‘what’ is, okay?” Vertical has unveiled the main official trailer for 2025’s The Astronaut, a sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Jessica Varley making her feature directorial debut. It lands in theaters in the US starting in October – because it is seriously creepy and they want it to play during horror season. After returning from her first space mission barely surviving re-entry, astronaut Sam Walker is placed under NASA’s care at a high security house for rehab and medical testing isolated out in the woods. However, when disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth. Is it real or is it just in her head? Or is it something else entirely? 👽 Starring Kate Mara as Sam, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, & Macy Gray. This originally premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. This is a much better trailer than the first look promo we also posted. This looks like an unsettling thriller that will play up the mystery of “what is really going on?!” right up until the last moment. I’m very curious now…

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Jess Varley’s sci-fi film The Astronaut, direct from YouTube:

You can watch the first look promo for Jess Varley’s The Astronaut film right here for even more footage.

👩‍🚀 Humanity is about to learn we’re not alone… When astronaut Sam Walker returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Required to be quarantined, her adopted father General William Harris places Sam under NASA surveillance in a high security house, isolated in the woods. Reunited with her husband, Sam appears to be re-acclimating and preparing for her next mission. When disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth, and the agencies meant to protect her are endangering her life. Not even those close to her can be trusted. The Astronaut is written and directed by American indie filmmaker Jess Varley, making her feature directorial debut after a few other shorts. It’s produced by Brad Fuller, Eric B. Fleischman, Chris Abernathy, Cameron Fuller. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Vertical will release Jess Varley’s The Astronaut film in select US theaters starting October 17th, 2025 coming up this fall. Want to watch this?

“In a city divided, they fight for the truth.” Take down the AI! Studiocanal has unveiled an official trailer for the film titled Dog 51, a sci-fi thriller by French filmmaker Cédric Jimenez. It just premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and also played at TIFF, with a release in France starting in October. In the near future, Paris is divided into three zones that separate social classes, and no one can escape ALMA, a predictive AI that has revolutionised law enforcement. When ALMA’s creator is assassinated, Salia, a top agent, and Zem, a jaded cop, are forced to work together to solve a murder that may expose the dark secrets of the system they serve. The movie is the third in Jimenez’s trilogy about cops – with BAC Nord and Novembre. Starring Gilles Lellouche, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Louis Garrel, Romain Duris, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Artus, Lala &ce, Stéphane Bak, and Thomas Bangalter (!!). This reminds me of I, Robot and Minority Report in many ways – very similar premise, very similar ideas about Artificial Intelligence. I can appreciate the world building in this, looks big and flashy and thrilling. Keep an eye out for it in US theaters eventually.

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Cédric Jimenez’s film Dog 51, direct from YouTube:

“Chien 51 is my third film exploring the theme of law enforcement. It completes a trilogy on the subject, bringing together the “dog” from BAC Nord and the elite officer from Novembre. If the police are the institution that enables the polis — the city — to function by tracking down criminals, what happens when it adopts a tool so powerful that it pushes the system to its breaking point, even bypassing its essential counterpart: justice? Can we entrust the safety of a city’s inhabitants to an ultraintelligent tool devoid of conscience and humanity?” –Director Cédric Jimenez

Dog 51 Film Trailer

Dog 51 Film Trailer

Set in a dystopian future in Paris, where people have been segregated into neighborhoods in three zones separated by social class, and police are directed by an artificial intelligence system called ALMA. When the creator of the system is murdered, investigators Salia (Adèle Exarchopoulos) & Zem (Gilles Lellouche) work to solve the case, and in doing so discover alarming information about the authority that governs them. Dog 51, also known as Chien 51 in French, is directed by French filmmaker Cédric Jimenez, director of the films Paris Under Watch, The Connection, The Man with the Iron Heart, and The Stronghold (aka BAC Nord), and November previously. The screenplay is by Olivier Demangel and Cédric Jimenez; based on the novel written by Laurent Gaudé. Produced by Hugo Sélignac. This initially premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival recently. Jimenez’s Dog 51 film opens first in French cinemas starting October 15th, 2025 (including in IMAX) this fall. No US release date is set yet – stay tuned for updates. Anyone interested in it?

What did she bring back? Signature Entertainment has revealed a first look promo for a movie called The Astronaut, a sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Jessica Varley making her feature directorial debut. It’s out on VOD now in the UK (but only there). This isn’t exactly the most original idea – it sounds similar to so many other sci-fi thrillers before it. After returning from her first space mission, astronaut Sam Walker is placed under NASA’s care at a high security house for rehab and medical testing isolated in the woods. However, when disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth. Is it real or is it just in her head? Starring Kate Mara as Sam, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, & Macy Gray. This originally premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. It’s being released in the UK directly to VOD starting today (September 22nd) but still has no US release yet. Not a good sign for this one, despite the interesting premise it seems like it’s a dud (reviews say the same). This is a chilling way to introduce the film – watch out for it if you are curious.

We’ll update and add the official trailer here once it’s available to watch online – stay tuned for any news.

Disney has debuted yet another new 60 second teaser trailer for Tron: Ares, the sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy continuing the story about A.I. programs taking over. Greta Lee plays Eve Kim, the human lead in this – a tech genius, analytical and observant. She’s one of the world’s best programmers: reclusive, anti social, and an important renegade in stopping the rogue programs. Tron: Ares stars Jared Leto, Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, + Jeff Bridges back as the OG Kevin Flynn. The full official trailer from one month ago is still the best – this movie is actually looking like it might be totally awesome. Have a look at more footage below.

“What the hell is a jigawatt?!” Universal debuted a brand new trailer celebrating the 40th anniversary of the all-time sci-fi time travel adventure classic Back to the Future, considered one of the best movies ever made. Robert Zemeckis directed this as his fourth feature film at the time and it hit first theaters in July 1985. Universal will be giving BTTF a big ol’ grand re-release in theaters on October 31st this fall, and of course it’s a must watch on the big screen. Bring the kids! Show it to the next generation, too! On October 31st, the beloved 1985 classic returns to theaters nationwide for a limited engagement in premium large screen formats, including Dolby Cinema, 4DX, D-Box, IMAX, among others. This marks the first time Back to the Future will be presented on the world’s largest screens, offering fans the opportunity to experience the film’s scope and spectacle in the most immersive formats yet. Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown. The BTTF original cast includes Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, Claudia Wells, Marc McClure, Wendie Jo Sperber, James Tolkan. “Who do you work for?!” “No one.” Well Go USA has revealed the official trailer for a sci-fi action thriller movie called Affinity, another trashy B-movie being dumped direct to VOD this year. It’s the latest from filmmaker Brandon Slagle, known for Attack of the Unknown, Frost, Battle For Saipan, The Flood, Arena Wars. “Ex-SEAL. Elite team. One impossible truth.” A PTSD-afflicted ex-SEAL rescues & falls for a woman only to lose her to mysterious kidnappers. He gathers an elite team to retrieve her but soon discovers the shocking truth: she’s been bio-engineered by a scientist grieving his own wife. Affinity stars Marko Zaror, Louis Mandylor, Brooke Ence & Jane Mirro. Every single one of these bad action movies is always about rescuing a woman taken by some bad guys. That’s the plot every time and only the context changes. So many shots of Zaror’s brooding face in this looking super pissed off and ready to beat up more people. Ha…

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Brandon Slagle’s action movie Affinity, direct from YouTube:

Together they begin to build a life, but when she disappears, Bruno must return to his violent past if he’s going to save her from a shocking conspiracy in this riveting, fast-paced action film. Affinity is directed by American B-movie director / actor / musician Brandon Slagle, of many genre movies including The Dark Avengers, Subject 87, Area 51 Confidential, The Black Dahlia Haunting, Dead Sea, House of Manson, Escape from Ensenada, The Dawn, Attack of the Unknown, Frost, Battle For Saipan, Breakout, The Flood, Arena Wars. “Let’s get lucky, shall we?” Prime Video has revealed the explosive teaser trailer for the next action-packed Season 2 the thrilling sci-fi series Fallout, based on the popular video game series of the same name. The first season of this epic post-apocalyptic series debuted in April 2024 last year, with mostly positive reviews. Onward! Lucy & The Ghoul are teaming up to take on greater threats this time. The new season will pick up in the aftermath of Season One’s epic finale and take audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas. What strange grotesque and dangerous and exciting apocalyptic wonders will they find there? The series stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, Moisés Arias, Kyle MacLachlan, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Frances Turner. Also featuring Dave Register, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton, Rodrigo Luzzi, Annabel O’Hagan, and Xelia Mendes-Jones. And a doggie known as CX404 (played by a Belgian Malinois named Lana5). This looks like an improvement over the first season! Even bigger and better and weirder and crazier. Fire it up.

The new season will pick up in the aftermath of Season One’s epic finale and take audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas. Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, highly violent universe waiting for them. Fallout is a series created & written & showrun by TV creators / writers Geneva Robertson-Dworet & Graham Wagner. With eps from Season 2 directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, also of “Lost in Space”, “The Terminal List”, “See”, “Shogun”, “The Boys”. Produced by Kilter Films. Based on the video game series created by Bethesda Softworks; the very first Fallout game launched back in 1997. It’s executive produced by James Altman, Todd Howard, Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Graham Wagner, Athena Wickham. Amazon drops Fallout Season 2 streaming on Prime Video worldwide starting on December 17th, 2025 later this year. Who’s in?
