A Sci-Fi Movie Searching for Truth in the Modern World

While “Orion” is an ambitious indie space saga, its examination of human nature is decidedly earthbound.

The film stars Andrew McCarthy as Jim, a NASA bigwig tasked with helping Apollo (Drew Van Acker), an astronaut with memory loss, figure out what happened to cause his ship to crash and leave the other crew dead. Their back-and-forth makes up the core of the film, as twists, turns and discoveries gradually unfold.

Director Jaco Bouwer found plenty of grounded elements in Anne Vithayathil’s script for “Orion.” Audiences will set sail on the film’s maiden voyage when it has its world premiere at FilmQuest in Provo, Utah, on Oct. 25.

“I don’t think we have an absolute truth anymore in this world,” he says. “This really touches on that without being super on the nose. Science fiction intrigues me a lot. I like the genre because it’s a little bit more of an expressionistic way of going about emotions.”

Bouwer credits his collaborators for helping walk the film’s tricky tightrope of making a largely two-hander feel expansive. He cites McCarthy’s curiosity about the script — which is miles from the Brat Pack roles that first made him famous — as one big benefit.

“He needs to know exactly what’s going on,” Bouwer says of McCarthy. “He really portrays Jim in a good way: There’s a cerebral aspect to him, he’s the master manipulator. In our film, there’s a moment towards the end where we do see some part of humanity behind it. I find him really professional, and I think his range is much bigger than we’ve seen before.”

Beyond the dialogue, Bouwer and his cinematographer David Kruta were eager to make the contained film feel taut and dynamic — no easy feat on an indie production.

“We actually used quite a few different lenses,” Bouwer says. “For the flashbacks, we used anamorphic, and we also changed the ratio. We sometimes went extreme wide-angle. Most of the effects were done in-camera. For me, it’s always performance first, so it’s important that the actors feel that. Because everything happens under one roof, the movement is motivated. So I would come in in the morning and we would block it in a way, and once we’ve done that, then I had a meeting with my DP to see how we can best choreograph the camera to suit them. Sometimes it’s purely for a visual, but mostly it was plotting their journey and letting the camera follow them or capture them in the best way.”

Also critical were the sparingly-used glimpses of the further regions of outer space, which helped to convey the scale of the story — including a stunner of a final scene.

“Especially that shot at the end, you pull back and just see the smallness and the scale of it,” Bouwer says. “There’s something really great for me, and emotional and sad as well, about that image. It’s kind of subliminal, but it was always in the back of my mind to make it feel that there is something bigger around. It makes the world bigger, although it’s a two-location film.”

And while the vastness of the universe is worth considering, Bouwer had the most fun conjuring all of the fun and thrills out of a small-scale story.

“I was really trying to mislead the audience in subtle ways,” he says. “I think it boils down to performances. If the performances weren’t believable, you’re in big trouble. So I was very happy to have Drew and Andrew as my main guides through this maze of twists and turns.”

“It’s evolution and you can’t stop it!” What a strange line of dialogue. Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for the movie Altered, a sci-fi thriller from Finnish filmmaker Timo Vuorensola. After his two Iron Sky movies, and action movies like 97 Minutes, this is his next project and seems pretty bad. In an alternate present society rebuilt after a nuclear war, genetically enhanced humans dominate society. But not everyone has genetics – regular people are called “Specials.” Outcasts Leon and Chloe fight for justice against corrupt politicians exploiting genetic disparity, risking everything to challenge the oppressive system. Altered stars Tom Felton as the hero Leon, with Elizaveta Bugulova, Richard Brake, Aggy K. Adams, and Igor Zhizhikin. They shot this in Kazakhstan and the future city in this is just a VFX-enhanced version of the city Astana. The rest of it looks like one big “huh?!” Set to debut in November if anyone wants to give it a go.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Timo Vuorensola’s sci-fi movie Altered, direct from YouTube:

“Fight the system. Change the world.” In an alternate present where genetic enhancements have become the norm, those who cannot take advantage are pushed into the underground. It’s up to a few brave souls to level the playing field for everyone, but every revolution has its cost. From Timo Vuorensola, visionary director of Iron Sky, and Tom Felton comes an exciting new tale of a dystopian Earth in need of a hero in Altered. Altered is written and directed by Finnish filmmaker Timo Vuorensola, director of the famous Iron Sky Nazi action movie and its sequel Iron Sky: The Coming Race, as well as Jeepers Creepers: Reborn and 97 Minutes recently, plus a few other short films. It’s produced by Andreas Klein, Marko Moellers, Doris Pfardrescher, Juris Razgulajevs. Filmed mostly in Kazakhstan. Well Go USA will debut Timo Vuorensola’s Altered film in select US theaters + on VOD starting November 21st, 2025 this fall. Who wants to watch?

“Many of your kind have come here. None have survived…” 20th Century has unveiled one additional final international trailer for Predator: Badlands directed by Dan Trachtenberg. We already posted the final official US trailer a few weeks ago but this is the version they made to play outside of the US. After three full trailers before this, and a behind-the-scenes promo, there’s a few more new shots in here hinting at where this is going. Badlands is also officially rated PG-13, but it should still kick ass anyway. The director of Prey welcomes you to a whole world of hurt. Set on a remote planet, a young Yautja outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary. Co-starring Elle Fanning as an android + Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as the young predator who must confront an apex predator. This is still looking like it will blow us all away this fall. Another awesome movie incoming this year! At this point, I’ve seen more than enough footage – I’m ready to catch this in theaters & have a blast. Bring on the action.

Here’s an extra international trailer (+ poster) for Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands, via YouTube:

Predator: Badlands is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, director of the films 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey previously, the upcoming Predator: Killer of Killers animated movie, episodes of “Black Mirror” and “The Boys”, plus many other shorts. The screenplay is written by Dan Trachtenberg and Patrick Aison. Based on characters created by Jim Thomas & John Thomas. Produced by John Davis, Dan Trachtenberg, Marc Toberoff, Ben Rosenblatt, Brent O’Connor. 20th Century releases Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands movie in theaters (huzzah!!) nationwide starting on November 7th, 2025 coming up. Fans shave heads to see sci-fi movie ‘Bugonia’ starring Emma Stone

LOS ANGELES, – Fans arrived for an early screening of the absurdist sci-fi comedy film “Bugonia,” on Monday night in Los Angeles with one unique condition—the theater only admitted bald people.

The film’s distributor, Focus Features, challenged audiences to shave their heads to see “Bugonia,” starring Oscar-winning actor Emma Stone.

Stone and Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos gained a powerful fanbase after teaming up for Oscar-nominated films “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”

“Bugonia” will be released in select theaters on Friday and then across the U.S. on October 31.

In “Bugonia,” Stone plays a powerful pharmaceutical CEO named Michelle Fuller, who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorist-cousins who are convinced that she’s an alien – so much so, they shave her head.

With a barber in the foyer, fans like Sam Sherman from Los Angeles stepped up to get their buzz cut to gain entry to the screening.

“I was already thinking of shaving my head,” Sherman said.

“I saw, like, a post about this and I was like, that’s a perfect excuse because I want to see ‘Bugonia’ anyway and I get to see it two weeks early or whatever it is, and then I get a free haircut and a free movie. It’s hard to say no to that,” he added.

Matthew Lopez, 29, from Los Angeles, thought the bald screening inspired by Stone’s shaved head was a great idea.

“It’s almost feeling immersive, like, ok, ‘I did it, she did it.’ I can feel some connection to the story,” he said.

For Richard Chong, 36, it was a chance to appease his friends and family.

“I like the director. I think he’s really good, very weird and my friends hate my bowl cut, so this is for them, also my wife, she really hates it,” Chong said.

“Her music will lead us into the future.” “No pressure.” Chroma has revealed the official trailer for an indie thriller film titled Decibel, the second feature directed by producer / filmmaker Zac Locke. After originally premiering at a few genre film festivals last year, it’s now set for US release on VOD starting in November this fall. “Decibel is exactly the kind of daring, inventive story Chroma stands for.” Locke explains more of his intent: “We set out to make a film that’s as thrilling as it is thought-provoking, exploring what happens when art and technology collide.” She’s not just listening… 🎧 What is she doing? When a struggling singer-songwriter gets the opportunity of a lifetime to work with a tech-obsessed music producer, her art and life are put in peril as she is forced to help create the perfect AI music algorithm. The tech horror-thriller stars Aleyse Shannon, Stefanie Estes, and Colby Groves. It looks like it has some intriguing ideas, but won’t amount to much. Less about AI more about a vicious producer trying to utilize this musician for her benefit.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Zac Locke’s sci-fi thriller Decibel, direct from YouTube:

Decibel follows a struggling singer-songwriter named Scout (Aleyse Shannon) who gets the opportunity of a lifetime to work with a tech-obsessed music producer. Her art and life are put in peril as she is forced to help create the perfect AI music algorithm. Beyond its sci-fi storytelling, Decibel also boasts a strong and distinctive soundtrack. The film features original songs by Caitlin Scholl and music production by Groves. Shannon performs her own vocals, all of which were recorded live on set, lending rare authenticity & emotional weight to the film. This authentic use of music and sound earned Decibel the Best Sound Award at FilmQuest. Decibel is directed by producer / filmmaker Zac Locke, director of the film Santa Isn’t Real previously, plus a few short films, and a producer on many other films. The screenplay is written by Stephen Christensen and Matt Wise. It’s produced by Jordan Michaud-Scorza, Matt Wise, Stephen Christensen, Zac Locke. This initially premiered at the 2024 Abertoir Horror Film Festival in Wales last year. Chroma debuts Locke’s Decibel thriller direct-to-VOD starting on November 7th, 2025 this fall. “You go live tomorrow, Rita.” Warner Bros Japan has just debuted their main official trailer for a fresh new anime adaptation of the classic time loop novel All You Need is Kill. This movie is a Hiroshi Sakurazaka production with animation by STUDIO4°C in Japan, directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Now set for release in Japan in January 2026 after playing at a few festivals this fall. Many will remember this title, as All You Need is Kill is the same story that was adapted & turned into the awesome time loop action thriller Edge of Tomorrow (aka Live Die Repeat) with Tom Cruise & Emily Blunt. After an unidentified plant from outer space invades, Rita finds herself trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the same day over and over again. Her memories and experiences sharpen her skills, turning her into a formidable warrior. Yet, the endless cycle of death and solitude begins to wear her down. However, one day she meets Keiji, who says, “When you die, I return, too…” Together, they begin to carve out a new future together. Featuring the voices of Ai Mikami & Natsuki Hanae as Rita & Keiji, plus Kana Hanazawa, Hiccorohee, and mo-junior high school. It’s such a colorful, spunky, unique anime version of the story. A must watch for sci-fi geeks! Enjoy.

Here’s the second Japanese trailer for Kenichiro Akimoto’s anime All You Need is Kill, from YouTube:

“You know why they cheer for you down there? If you could survive against those goons, so can they…” Paramount has launched the second official trailer for the sci-fi action movie The Running Man, the next new Edgar Wright movie after Last Night in Soho in 2021. Landing in theaters this November – exactly one month from now. Based on the 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) – it is the second adaptation of the book following that 80s movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Set in a dystopian future, a game show called “The Running Man” has people chased by murderous Hunters across the world to win money. Ben Richards is willing to go the distance in this ultimate game of life and death… This new 2025 version stars Glen Powell as Ben, with Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, Karl Glusman, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Jayme Lawson, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, William H. Macy, David Zayas, Sean Hayes, and Colman Domingo. This is the best trailer yet! Looks like a blast! All the explosive traps set in the house seen at the end of this trailer look like so much ridiculous fun. I really hope Powell wins the game.

Here’s the second official trailer (+ poster) for Edgar Wright’s movie The Running Man, from YouTube:

First Real Teaser for ‘Pluribus’ Intriguing Sci-Fi Series w/ Rhea Seehorn

“You might want to stick close to home for the next few days…” Apple TV has unveiled their first real 60-second teaser for the new series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan titled Pluribus. They already debuted a total of 4 other short cryptic teasers over the last few months, still not really revealing what is going on. This next teaser doesn’t explain or reveal much more yet. The sci-fi drama series is titled Pluribus – the Latin word is an adjective that means “much, many” (commonly used in the U.S. slogan “E pluribus unum“). The only one-line intro available so far to setup the concept: The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness. Pluribus stars Rhea Seehorn (who was also in “Better Call Saul”) along with Carlos Manuel Vesga, Karolina Wydra, Miriam Shor, and Samba Schutte. It still seems like this will turn out similar to something like Apple TV’s other sci-fi show Severance with some more lo-fi sci-fi aspects within this story. What is she up to in this & why is she the one that must fix everything? Huh.

Here’s the first actual teaser for Vince Gilligan’s series Pluribus, direct from Apple TV’s YouTube:

And a few more cryptic teasers revealed recently for Vince Gilligan’s series Pluribus, via YouTube:

Pluribus First Look Teaser

You can rewatch the announcement teaser for Vince Gilligan’s Pluribus series right here for even more.

“A new series from the creator of Breaking Bad.” The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness. With writing by Gordon Smith, Alison Tatlock, Vera Blasi, Jenn Carroll, Jonny Gomez, Ariel Levine. And eps directed by Vince Gilligan and Byron Howard. Bugonia (2025): Yorgos Lanthimos And Emma Stone Reunite For A Genre-Bending Sci-Fi Thriller | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Focus Features’ Bugonia arrives in theaters on October 31, 2025, bringing together an extraordinary creative team led by director Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Favourite) and Academy Award® winner Emma Stone. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone, in a screenplay penned by Will Tracy (The Menu).

According to the official production notes, Bugonia follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap a powerful corporate CEO, convinced she is an alien plotting humanity’s destruction. What begins as an unhinged act of paranoia evolves into a darkly comedic, unsettling examination of control, fear, and belief in a world where truth feels increasingly elusive.

Produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Miky Lee, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko, Bugonia unites some of contemporary cinema’s boldest storytellers. Lanthimos’ trademark surrealism and Tracy’s razor-sharp writing promise a film that defies conventional boundaries, blending tension with absurdist humor and speculative mystery.

While plot specifics remain closely guarded, Bugonia continues Lanthimos’ exploration of human behavior through extreme scenarios. The collaboration with Focus Features signals another ambitious theatrical release designed for audiences seeking smart, unconventional storytelling.

“Lies!” “Truth!” “What’s the difference…?” Scary! Don’t skip this one. Focus Features has unveiled a second trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ funky new film titled Bugonia, a sort of sci-fi conspiracy thriller set for release at the end of October. The film premiered at the 2025 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals to mostly positive reviews (here’s mine) – many are quoted in this trailer below. This is Yorgos’ next enticing follow-up to Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, re-teaming with Emma and Jesse. Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, convinced that she is really an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. Maybe she actually is? What will happen if they find out? This is a remake of the Korean film titled Save the Green Planet!, which not many people have seen yet. The cast in Bugonia includes Emma Stone as Michelle, CEO of a pharma corporation, plus Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. I’m a fan of this one! It’s not the best of the year, but it’s just the right dose of kooky & shocking & entertaining – as only Yorgos can pull off. Emma Stone phone home. 👽

Here’s the second & final trailer (+ poster) for Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi thriller Bugonia, from YouTube:

The screenplay is written by Will Tracy. Based on the original 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!. Produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Miky Lee, & Jerry Kyoungboum Ko. The film already premiered at all the fall festivals including Venice, Telluride, London.
