Sam Nivola Stars in a Generic Teen Movie Throwback

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

In the new comedy “Driver’s Ed,” Sam Nivola (of “White Lotus” incest fame) plays a lovesick high school senior, Jeremy, who has a passion for movies. He made a short film that won some kind of prize, and he frequently pulls out a little video camera to capture a moment that strikes him as cinematic.

If you told me that “Driver’s Ed” was itself made by Jeremy, I’d believe you; it has all the distracted, hurried texture of typical teenage creative output, batting at big emotions it doesn’t quite understand and zigging haphazardly in various directions as it makes its way to the most obvious of conclusions. Were I his film teacher, I’d give Jeremy a solid B on the assignment but suggest maybe he consider majoring in accounting.

Easy's Waltz

Jeremy didn’t make the film, though. Bobby Farrelly did, he of “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary” fame. Farrelly is 67, and Thomas Moffett, who wrote the film, is 47. So I’m not sure what their excuse is. “Driver’s Ed” is almost shockingly generic, a boilerplate teen road-trip movie whose only distinct personality trait is having no personality at all.

Were it not for the iPhones and a “lit” here and a “no cap” there, “Driver’s Ed” could have been made in the early 2000s, those waning days of the last great teen cinema epoch. It has all the requisite components: a nerdy-cute boy protagonist, a wise-beyond-her-years dream girl, a funny stoner friend. Its sensitivities are more evolved than those of, say, “American Pie,” but “Driver’s Ed” would otherwise fit cozily alongside any of the movies that “American Pie” inspired.

There are glimmers of originality in Moffett’s script, flashes of idiosyncratic detail that suggest something richer, more personal that could have been had Farrelly not sanded down every edge he could. Farrelly takes broad swings at comedy, but few of his jokes land. Whatever magic he used to have has gone; his instincts have faded, his timing is off.

The film concerns Jeremy’s madcap adventure to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where his bitterly missed girlfriend, Samantha (Lilah Pate), is a freshman at UNC. Jeremy is pretty sure he’s going to lose Samantha to the temptations of college life if he doesn’t do something big. So he steals a driving instruction car and steals off into the Carolina backcountry, with three mismatched fellow students in tow. What ensues is meant to be a comically odyssean journey in pursuit of blind passion. In reality, a few minor things happen and then the movie ends exactly as we expect it to.

At least the company is welcome. Nivola is a charming, natural actor. He breathes something like real life into Moffett’s bland characterization. He has able support from Aidan Laprete as an affable slacker, Mohana Krishnan as a Type A overachiever, and TikTok star Sophie Telegadis, doing very convincing Samaire Armstrong-on-“The O.C.” drag. The kids have a lively, winsome rapport and manage to register some specificity in the face of Farrelly and Moffett’s myriad tired clichés.

The adults don’t fare quite so well. Molly Shannon does her noble best with a Bad Principal role, while Kumail Nanjiani strains for anything resembling humor as a loser substitute teacher. I’m sure both saw some value in working for one of the Farrelly brothers, even in 2025, but they maybe should have held out for something better.

“Driver’s Ed” is kindhearted and well-intentioned enough that one can’t outright hate it. But Farrelly seriously tries that good will as the movie lurches along. Its 98 minutes feel like twice that. The expected tangents and vignettes of a road movie—in this case a meet-cute with a dog owner, a run in with a petty thief who has the whitest veneers I’ve ever seen, a quick trip in the back of a refrigerated truck full of fur coats (yeah I don’t get it either)—are to a one fatally dull and wholly unnecessary. “Driver’s Ed” has all the arbitrary comedy of a bad improv set, seeming to figure that randomness itself is funny. There are a few laughs to be found in the film, little moments of wit or weirdness, but the film is otherwise a mirthless drag rescued only by its bright leads. Maybe let them make the movie next time.

Grade: C

“Driver’s Ed” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Sam Worthington and Gugu Mbatha-Raw on ‘Fuze’ at TIFF

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

A ticking bomb in the heart of London sets the stage for “Fuze,” a taut new British crime thriller from director David Mackenzie. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, combines the urgency of a heist film with the dread of an unexploded World War II bomb unearthed at a bustling construction site.

Written by Ben Hopkins, the feature stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sam Worthington. As the military and police scramble to evacuate the city against the clock, chaos unfolds across London’s streets.

For Mackenzie, whose credits include the best picture-nominated “Hell or High Water” and “Outlaw King,” the concept was born years ago.

“I wanted to mash up the tensions of the heist movie with an unexploded bomb movie,” Mackenzie tells Variety in the TIFF Studio. “In the U.K., there’s always a discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb somewhere. Evacuations are forced, and they’re often blown up in situ. It felt like a very real thing to lean into. With ‘Fuze,’ I just wanted to make something purely entertaining, visceral and cinematic — not trying to be a message film. It’s a high-tension, hopefully enjoyable ride.”

At just over 90 minutes, Mackenzie calls it his leanest feature yet: “I genuinely want the audience to feel a sense of relief that it’s over and to have had a good, entertaining experience of a thrilling, high-tension, modern heist movie.”

Mbatha-Raw, who plays Chief Superintendent Zuzana, says she was drawn to the project’s realism and immediacy.

“When I read the script, it felt so propulsive, almost like it was playing out in real time,” she shares. “I hadn’t played a police officer before, and I was excited to tackle something this grounded and gritty. I got to meet with London-based police officers and observe command centers like the one my character oversees. That was a fascinating insight.”

Mbatha-Raw praises Mackenzie’s style: “His long takes and constantly moving camera feel so authentic and exhilarating. Watching it with an audience for the first time, I was on the edge of my seat — even though I knew what was going to happen.”

Worthington, who reunites with Mackenzie after several collaborations, said his character X didn’t exist in early drafts.

“I just phoned David and said, ‘What can I do in this one?’ He told me all the roles were gone,” Worthington recalls. “But when I read it, I thought I could do something with this henchman figure in Theo’s gang. I asked him to let me create something, and David gave me that trust. That freedom allowed me to help serve the story and be a foil for Theo.”

Worthington, best known for his role as Jake Sully in James Cameron’s “Avatar” franchise, added that Mackenzie’s confidence in his actors keeps him coming back: “He trusts me, which is fantastic. Then you can just go and create.”

Alongside Taylor-Johnson and James, the cast builds tension through two opposing forces — the bomb squad and the robbery gang.

“They’re both really strong actors, deeply committed to what they’re doing,” Mackenzie says of Taylor-Johnson and James. “Aaron brings a very real representation of the Army EOD squad, while Theo delivers this visceral energy as part of the robbery crew. It was great to work with them both.”

While Mackenzie called “Fuze” his “pure cinematic entertainment” effort, he teased a passion project long in the works: an adaptation of a generational spaceship travel novel spanning 100 years.

“It’s incredibly complex, a 190-page script at the moment,” he admits. “If realized properly, it could be a heck of a trip. That’s something I’d still love to find a home for.”

For Mbatha-Raw, the role marked another chance to explore range. “I’d love to do a two-hander on film — something really intimate and soulful. I’m always looking for characters with depth,” she shares.

And for Worthington, with off “Avatar: Fire and Ash” on the horizon, “Fuze” proved another chance to collaborate with a trusted director. “It’s all about whether a movie connects with an audience,” he said. “If it does, you hope you get the chance to keep telling these stories.”

Worthington also offered an update on James Cameron’s sprawling “Avatar” sequels. He confirmed that Avatar 2 and 3 were shot together, with portions of 4 filmed as well to accommodate the younger cast’s aging. “There was a scene or two where the kids had to be the same age, so we shot that back in 2018 or 2019,” he explains. He added that Cameron has written Avatar 4 and 5 in full, teasing that the saga will jump forward in time if audiences continue to embrace the films. “We’re not arrogant enough to assume they’ll keep connecting, but if they do, we get to keep telling the story.”

Worthington also addressed the uncertain future of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon” saga, in which he had a significant role. He confirms that Costner had mapped out and written four films, with Worthington having read all of them, but the project’s continuation now rests in limbo. “That was Costner’s passion project — he’d been working on it for 10 years,” Worthington says. “It all comes down to whether the audience connects. The passion is always there, but sometimes it’s just about whether it’s the right time for people to embrace it.”

bitchy | Sam McKnight: Stop attacking ‘vulnerable young woman’ Princess Kate

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

The pro-royal community certainly wants to have it both ways. They want to crow about how the Princess of Wales’s new hair “broke the internet” and became one of the big pop culture stories of the week. They also want to pretend that everyone is “attacking” a poor innocent 43-year-old child who has never done one cruel or racist thing in her life! For the record, I AM concerned, just not in an “infantilizing Kate” way. I’m concerned about Kate because I think she’s been in a frightful state for the past two years and it really doesn’t look like her family is helping her or caring for her whatsoever. I’m concerned because even with a half-dozen luxury vacations this year, Kate looks like she hasn’t gotten a decent night’s sleep in months. I’m concerned because the people around Kate let her step outside yesterday with that bronde/caramel doll wig perched on her head and no one helped her. Well, Princess Diana’s former hairstylist said words about all of the “nasty comments” about Kate’s hair.

Princess Diana’s former hairstylist is weighing in on Kate Middleton’s headline-making new look. After hints of a hair transformation during a brief appearance in August, Thursday’s outing confirmed that the Princess of Wales is now sporting lengthy, highlighted tresses — her blondest and longest style ever. The change prompted a wide range of commentary online, including from hairstylist-to-the-stars Sam McKnight, who served as Princess Diana’s personal hairstylist from 1990 until her tragic death in 1997.

In a strongly-worded post on Instagram, McKnight called out anyone criticizing Kate’s look.

“I am shocked, horrified, dismayed and disgusted by all the nasty comments about the Princess of Wales today,” he wrote. “A woman’s hair is very personal to her, it’s armour, defence, confidence and so much more. I cannot believe how evil and lacking in any kind of empathy are the comments, the majority made apparently by other women, attacking a vulnerable other young woman, who has no choice, by dint of who she married, and the role she took on, to bravely face the public,” McKnight continued.

McKnight also referenced Princess Kate’s cancer treatment and recovery in his message.

“I’m sure she would rather be away from the public arena. She has brilliantly and quietly, unselfishly represented our country, the soft power we still have as a nation. Cancer affects individuals differently, but is life-changing for everyone. So FFS LEAVE HER ALONE. SHAME ON YOU,” he wrote.

[From People]

Again, they want it both ways – “Kate broke the internet/she’s our perfect popular princess/she gets all of this attention for just stepping outside” AND they want to react this way when people notice that Kate rocked up to an event with a really cheap-looking hairpiece. By talking about Kate’s hair (and it is HER hair, she paid for it), we’re actually having a larger conversation about how the royal institution chews up and destroys women. We’re having a larger conversation about what fourteen years in the institution has done to Kate’s physical and mental health. I’m honestly getting a real sense of deja vu to the fall of 2023. I genuinely hope we’re not on the verge of another months-long disappearance.

Music Venue Trust Distributes Over £100,000 of Sam Fender Fundraising Support to 38 Grassroots Music Venues

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Music Venue Trust (MVT), the charity which represents hundreds of UK Grassroots Music Venues (GMVs), has confirmed that funds raised from Sam Fender’s arena tour at the end of 2024 have now been distributed, via its Liveline Fund, to support 38 independent venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The package, worth over £100,000, has provided urgent emergency assistance alongside essential improvement grants, forming a full programme of support that protects, secures, and improves the grassroots ecosystem.

The Liveline Fund was created by Music Venue Trust (MVT) and live music advocates Save Our Scene (SOS) to distribute funding directly to Grassroots Venues, artists and promoters with financial support raised by contributions from arena and stadium ticket sales. Artists including Sam Fender, Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Enter Shikari were early adopters of the Grassroots Levy and have enabled Liveline to begin fuelling the future of UK grassroots music.

A total of 19 venues have been supported through the Emergency Hardship Relief Fund and Emergency Response Team – a lifeline package that steps in to prevent imminent closures. These interventions address urgent challenges such as licensing issues, legal disputes, noise complaints, financial crises, and sudden, unpredictable shocks like floods, fires, or bereavement. Each grant or intervention is tied to a full audit and support process to ensure long-term sustainability. This proactive work directly prevents closures and stops venues from falling into crisis, ensuring viable grassroots spaces remain open.

Alongside this, a further 19 venues received over £50,000 in direct improvement grants, enabling upgrades to facilities, technical equipment, and infrastructure that directly benefit artists, staff, and audiences.

Sam Fender said “It’s brilliant to see that the money raised from the arena tour is making a real difference to so many venues. The grassroots circuit has been decimated over the last 10 years or so and the idea that money from shows in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense. These places are legendary.”

The impact is being felt across England, Scotland, and Wales. Venues to receive funding include Stereo, Sub Club, Paper Dress Vintage, The Hunter Club, The White Hotel, The Strines Nightingale, Spanners, The Garibaldi Hotel, Moor Beer Vaults, Slay Glasgow, Hippos, Ashburton Arts Centre, Clwb Ifor Bach, Newhampton Arts Centre, The Verdict, The Peer Hat, and venues based in the North East like Little Buildings, NE Volume Music Bar & Venue, and The Globe.

In Bury St Edmunds, The Hunter Club called the support “a game-changer”, explaining that it empowers them to provide a better experience for artists and audiences while continuing to nurture the next generation of musicians.

In London, Paper Dress Vintage highlighted the importance of resilience: “Our trade relies on us being able to put on music and our mixing desk, which was irreparably damaged recently, is absolutely central to all this activity. Having this new, protected system in place will make us more resilient and protect us from future damage and loss of earnings.”

Manchester’s The White Hotel pointed to the stark financial pressures faced by independent cultural spaces: “The increased cost of running a hospitality business, especially one that prioritises art and culture, is increasingly difficult. This financial support is vital to us.”

In Cardiff, Clwb Ifor Bach said the grant has resolved a critical technical issue: “This funding means we finally have our main room back up to the standard we expect of ourselves for the artists who visit our venue.”

And in Glasgow, the iconic Sub Club explained how support from the Liveline Fund has been transformative: “It allowed us to do much needed repairs and upgrades to our ‘Body Sonic’ dance floor, upgrading the amps and servicing the entire floor system. This provides an intense dance floor experience for our patrons that’s unmatched anywhere else in Scotland and we believe is an integral part of the Subbie experience.”

Mark Davyd, CEO, MVT commented “This remarkable contribution from Sam Fender, his management, and his team has created a real and lasting impact on the grassroots music ecosystem. These venues are the places where artists like Sam take their first steps, where local communities come together, and where live music truly begins. By investing directly into their future, we are strengthening the entire live music sector.”

This initiative underscores how funds raised from arena and stadium events can play a pivotal role in sustaining the grassroots infrastructure that underpins the UK’s world-renowned live music industry. MVT’s Annual Report 2024 revealed that, on average, GMVs operated on a profit margin of just 0.48% with 43.8% of them reporting a loss in the previous 12 months.

Shannon Nadj of Hot Pilates Teams Up With Sam Cutler of Mindfull for the Ultimate Fall Reset Program

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

For celebrity fitness guru Shannon Nadj, fall is more than back-to-school season. It’s a chance to reset the mind, body, and soul through her back-to-sweat routine. That’s why this year the Hot Pilates founder partnered with lifestyle medicine coach Sam Cutler to create a holistic wellness experience for a seasonal recharge.

“By committing to a program, you join an amazing community of people with the same goals. You’re more likely to hold yourself accountable and show up. … Set it and forget it is the name of the game,” Nadj says.

The trainer, who’s worked with stars like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Sofia Richie, launched her Reset, Restart, and Refocus schedule to help clients transition into September with strength, intention, and balance.

Hot Pilates

And to turn up the heat while adjusting to cooler temperatures, Nadj is offering complimentary access to Cutler’s Mindfull nutrition platform for the 7-Day Energy Reset filled with fresh recipes, educational videos, and community support.

“Many of us are coming off of drinking summer spritzers, traveling, and having more relaxed schedules, so right now, self-care is about detoxing from the inside out,” the Pilates pro says.

Cutler adds, “When routines ramp up, whether it’s back to school, work, or managing everything at home, it’s easy to put yourself last. That usually means less sleep, more stress, and depending on coffee or sugar just to push through. … This reset helps you break that cycle by using whole foods, sustained energy sources, and proven nutrition strategies to restore steady, natural energy.”

The Fit Fatale/Instagram

And fueling up with healthy options goes hand-in-hand with Nadj’s current wellness regimen, which includes three reformer sessions and three mat Pilates classes per week, plus a 21-day cleanse free of sugar, alcohol, gluten, and dairy.

“We need proper nutrition to power through the progression of our workouts. … I’ve been making a smoothie with frozen blueberries, half a banana, spring water, and Thorne Medi-Clear SGS Chocolate protein powder for breakfast. For lunch, I’ll have a hearty salad with veggies like broccoli, spinach, or asparagus, and proteins like chicken, steak, lamb, or fish,” she shares.

But, if you’re just acclimating to the leaves changing color, the Harvard-trained food expert emphasizes that simple swaps can also make an impact.

The Fit Fatale/Instagram

“When you find a way of eating that works for you and is flexible enough that you don’t have to skip out on life, it becomes something you can carry with you forever. … Many people see drastic shifts from increasing fiber through leafy greens or cutting down on processed ingredients. … Our philosophy is to focus on eating 80% one-ingredient, whole foods from the earth, and leaving 20% for whatever you truly desire.”

For both entrepreneurs, autumn isn’t just about hitting refresh, it’s about laying the groundwork for the months ahead.

“The habits and routines we establish in the fall will help us as we head into the extremes of winter. … We need all the energy we can get before the busy, and sometimes chaotic, holiday season. Show up today and your future self will thank you,” Nadj shares.

Shannon Nadj/Instagram

Cutler explains, “What most people miss is that eating healthy isn’t about adding in another wellness habit or life-changing product. … I eat similarly all year round, focusing on leafy greens, lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, while lowering processed ingredients. With that said, I love to seek out the best seasonal produce and nostalgic dishes that help us embrace the time of year.”

Sam Claflin plays Joel Lazarus, a forensic psychologist investigating his father’s suicide, only to become entangled in a slew of cold case murders, in the first look images for Harlan Coben’s Lazarus for Amazon’s Prime Video released on Wednesday.

The limited series, which sees the team behind Netflix’s hit Fool Me Once reunite, is based on an original idea from prolific author Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst, who wrote the drama together. The series is Coben’s second at Prime Video after his first, Shelter, was canceled. In addition to Fool Me Once, Coben and Brocklehurst previously worked together on Stay Close and The Stranger at Netflix.
